[Sugriva narrates the fight between Dundubhi and Vali and explains how he has come to acquire knowledge of geogrphy of all quarters]

গতেষু বানরেন্দ্রেষু রামস্সুগ্রীবমব্রবীত্৷

কথং ভবান্বিজানীতে সর্বং বৈ মণ্ডলং ভুবঃ৷৷4.46.1৷৷


বানরেন্দ্রেষু when the monkey chieftains, গতেষু had gone, রামঃ Rama, সুগ্রীবম্ to Sugriva, অব্রবীত্ said, ভবান্ you, ভুবঃ of the earth, সর্বম্ entire, মণ্ডলম্ region, কথম্ how, বিজানীতে do you know

When the chieftains of the monkeys left, Rama enquired Sugriva, how he had come to know the regions of the entire earth (which is a mandala. a circular form).

শ্রূযতাং সর্বমাখ্যাস্যে বিস্তরেণ নরর্ষভ!৷৷4.46.2৷৷


ততঃ then, সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, প্রণতাত্মবান্ offered reverential salutation, রামম্ to Rama, উবাচ spoke, সর্বম্ all, বিস্তরেণ in detail, আখ্যাস্যে narrate, নরর্ষভ! O Rama, শ্রূযতাম্ listen.

Then offering reverential salutation to Rama, Sugriva said, 'I shall narrate in detail. Listen, O bull among men !
যদা তু দুন্দুভিং নাম দানবং মহিষাকৃতিম্৷

পরিকালযতে বালী মলযং প্রতি পর্বতম্৷৷4.46.3৷৷

তদা বিবেশ মহিষো মলযস্য গুহাং প্রতি৷

বিবেশ বালী তত্রাপি মলযং তজ্জিঘাংসযা৷৷4.46.4৷৷


বালী Vali, মহিষাকৃতিম্ in buffalo form, দুন্দুভিং নাম named Dundubhi, দানবম্ demon, যদা when, মলযং পর্বতং প্রতি till the mount Malaya, প্রতিকালযতে wished to kill him, তদা then, মহিষঃ buffalo, মলযস্য Malaya's, গুহাং প্রতি towards the cave, বিবেশ entered, বালী Vali, তজ্জিঘাংসযা with the intention of killing him, তত্রাপি into that, মলযম্ Malaya, বিবেশ entered.

Vali chased the demon Dundubhi in buffalo form into a cave of mount Malaya in order to kill him.

'Then I waited at the entrance of the cave with due loyalty. A year passed. Yet Vali did not return.

তদহং বিস্মিতো দৃষ্ট্বা ভ্রাতৃশোকবিষার্দিতঃ৷৷4.46.6৷৷

'There seeing the cave overflowing with the gushing blood, I was bewildered, thinking that my brother might have been killed. I suffered intense agony.
অথাহং কৃতবুদ্ধিস্তু সুব্যক্তং নিহতো গুরুঃ৷

শিলা পর্বতসঙ্কাশা বিলদ্বারি মযা কৃতা৷৷4.46.7৷৷

অশক্নুব ন্নিষ্ক্রমিতুং মহিষো বিনশেদিতি৷

'Thereafter, convinced that my brother was killed, I placed a mountain-size rock at the entrance of the cave so that Dundubhi will be destroyed, unable to come out of the cave.

ততঃ then, অহম্ I, তস্য his, জীবিতে about his life, নিরাশঃ lost hope, কিষ্কিন্ধাম্ to Kishkinda, আগাম্ I came, সুমহত্ great, রাজ্যং চ kingdom also, রুমযা সহ with Ruma, তার যা with Tara, প্রাপ্য having got, তত্র there, মিত্রৈঃ with friends, সহিতঃ accompanied, বিগতজ্বরঃ fearlessly, বসামি I lived.

'I lost hope of his life and came back to Kishkinda. Having got the kingdom, and also Ruma and Tara, I was anointed king and ruled it fearlessly with all friends.
আজগাম ততো বালী হত্বা তং দানবর্ষভম্৷

ততোহমদদাং রাজ্যং গৌরবাদ্ভযযন্ত্রিতঃ৷৷4.46.10৷৷


ততঃ then, দানবর্ষভম্ bull among monsters বালী Vali, তম্ him, হত্বা after killing, আজগাম he came, ততঃ then, অহম্ I, ভযযন্ত্রিতঃ constrained with fear, গৌরবাত্ with respect, রাজ্যম্ kingdom, অদদাম্ returned.

স মাং জিঘাংসুর্দুষ্টাত্মা বালী প্রব্যথিতেন্দ্রিযঃ৷

পরিকালযতে ক্রোধাদ্ধাবন্তং সচিবৈস্সহ৷৷4.46.11৷৷


দুষ্টাত্মা evil-minded, সঃ বালী that Vali, প্রব্যথিতেন্দ্রিযঃ having lost control over his senses, সচিবৈস্সহ along with ministers, ধাবন্তম্ while I was running, মাম্ me, জিঘাংসুঃ to kill, ক্রোধাত্ enraged, পরিকালযতে ran after me.

'The evil-minded Vali, having lost his self-control, ran after me in anger, to kill me and my ministers. I kept running.

ততঃ then, মযা by me, পৃথিবী the earth, আদর্শতলসঙ্কাশা like the surface of a mirror, অলাতচক্রপ্রতিমা like a circling of fire-band, দৃষ্টা seen, গোষ্পদবত্ as though it is of the size of cow's hoof, তদা then.

পূর্বাং দিশং ততো গত্বা পশ্যামি বিবিধান্ দ্রুমান্৷

পর্বতন্শ্চ নদী রম্যাস্সরাংসি বিবিধানি চ৷৷4.46.14৷৷


ততঃ then, পূর্বাং দিশম্ eastern quarter, গত্বা after going, বিবিধান্ several, দ্রুমান্ trees, নদীন্ rivers, রম্যান্ delighting, পর্বতান্ mountains, বিবিধানি many, সরাংসি চ lakes also, পশ্যামি see (saw).

'Then I ran in the eastern direction and saw many trees, lakes, rivers and beautiful mountains.
উদযং তত্র পশ্যামি পর্বতং ধাতুমণ্ডিতম্৷

ক্ষীরোদং সাগরং চৈব নিত্যমপ্সরসালযম্৷৷4.46.15৷৷


তত্র there, ধাতুমণ্ডিতম্ embellished with minerals, উদযং পর্বতম্ mountain behind which the Sun rises, নিত্যম্ always, অপ্সরসালযম্ frequented by apsaras, ক্ষীরোদং সাগরং চৈব the milky ocean also, পশ্যামি see (saw).

'There I saw, filled with minerals the mountain behind which the Sun rises and the milky ocean frequented by the apsaras.

পুনরাবৃত্য সহসা প্রস্থিতোহং তদা বিভো!৷৷4.46.16৷৷

'O king! chased thus by Vali, I ran and turned back and ran again-fast.

'Then chased by Vali, I changed my present direction from the east towards the southern quarter where Vindhya mountain stood with its, beautiful sandal trees.

'I was looking at the trees and mountains in the southern direction, I reached the western quarter pursued by Vali.

'Looking at the places around, I reached the best of mountains where the Sun sets (I found Vali still chasing me) and ran towards the north.

হিমবন্তং চ Himavanta also, মেরুং চ Meru also, তথা so also, উত্তরং সমুদ্রং চ even the northern sea, বালিনা by Vali, সমভিদ্রুতঃ chased, যদা when, শরণম্ protection, ন বিন্দম্ I did not get, তদা then, বুদ্ধিসম্পন্নঃ wise, হনূমান্ Hanuman, মাম্ to me, বাক্যম্ these words, অব্রবীত্ spoke.

'I saw Himavan and mount Meru on the north and the northern sea. Still pursued by Vali, I could not know where to go when wise Hanuman spoke to me these words:
ইদানীং মে স্মৃতং রাজন্যথা বালী হরীশ্বরঃ৷৷4.46.21৷৷

মতঙ্গেন তদা শপ্তো হ্যস্মিন্নাশ্রমমণ্ডলে৷

প্রবিশেদ্যদি বৈ বালী মূর্ধাস্য শতধা ভবেত্৷৷4.46.22৷৷

তত্র বাসস্সুখোস্মাকং নিরুদ্বিগ্নো ভবিষ্যতি৷


রাজন্ O king!, হরীশ্বরঃ king of monkeys, বালী Vali, তদা then, মতঙ্গেন by Mathanga, যথা as, শপ্তঃ cursed, মে to me, ইদানীম্ now, স্মৃতম্ I remembered, বালী Vali, অস্মিন্ in this, আশ্রমমণ্ডলে hermitage site, প্রবিশেদ্যদি if he enters, অস্য his, মূর্ধা head, শতধা hundred pieces, ভবেত্ will become, তত্র there, অস্মাকম্ to us, বাসঃ residence, সুখঃ happy, নিরুদ্বিগ্নঃ peaceful, ভবিষ্যতি will be.

'I remembed Matanga's curse to Vali, king of monkeys. Vali would not enter the site of Matanga's hermitage as his head would break into a hundred pieces if he did'. Therefore we thought it would be safe for us to reside in that place.

নৃপাত্মজ O prince Rama!, ততঃ from that place, ঋষ্যমূকং পর্বতম্ mountain Rishyamuka, তদা then, আসাদ্য having reached, বালী Vali, মতঙ্গস্য Matanga's, ভযাত্ out of fear of, তদা then, ন বিবেশ did not enter.

'O prince Rama! then I reached mount Rishyamuka which Vali did not enter out of fear
of the curse of Matanga.

পৃথিবীমণ্ডলং কৃত্স্নং গুহামস্যাগতস্ততঃ৷


রাজন্ king, এবম্ in that manner, তদা then, কত্স্নম্ পৃথিবীমণ্ডলম্ entire earth, প্রত্যক্ষম্ saw directly, মযা by me, উপলক্ষিতম্ is surveyed, গুহাম্ this cave, ততঃ thereafter, আগতঃ reached, অস্মি I am.

'O king! that way I surveyed the entire earth directly and returned to this cave and lived here.
