[Svayamprabha helps the monkeys to reach out of the cave --- Angada regrets for exceeding the time limit --- proposes fasting unto death fearing punishment --- the monkeys decide to end their life rather than return without Sita.]

To the auspicious words of the righteous, blameless hermitess Hanuman replied:
শরণং ত্বাং প্রপন্না স্ম সর্বে বৈ ধর্মচারিণীং৷

যঃ কৃতস্সমযোস্মাকং সুগ্রীবেণ মহাত্মনা৷৷4.53.2৷৷

স চ কালো হ্যতিক্রান্তো বিলে চ পরিবর্ততাম্৷


ধর্মচারিণীম্ to the righteous lady, ত্বাম্ you, সর্বে all, শরণং প্রসন্নাঃ স্মঃ have taken refuge, মহাত্মনা by the great self, সুগ্রীবেণ by Sugriva, অস্মাকং to us, যঃ such, সমযঃ condition, কৃতঃ having given, সঃ that, বিলে in the cave, পরিবর্ততাম্ while we were moving about, হ্যতিক্রান্তঃ exceeded.

'You are a righteous lady. You have given us refuge. Now in moving about the cave we have exceeded the time limit given by Sugriva.'

ধর্মচারিণি a woman of righteous practices, সুগ্রীবভযকর্শিতান্ who are afraid of Sugriva, নঃ us, সর্বান্ all, ত্রাতুম্ to save, অর্হসি should, অস্মাভিঃ by us, মহত্ great, কার্যং চ task also, কর্তব্যম্ should be done, ইহ now, বাসিভিঃ staying here, অস্মাভিঃ by us, তত্ that, কার্যং চাপি the objective, ন কৃতম্ not accomplished.

'O righteous lady! we have a great task waiting. We are afraid of Sugriva as we could not accomplish our objective by staying here. Save us.'

To the words of Hanuman the ascetic replied, 'I consider it difficult for any one who enters here to go back alive.'

নিযমোপার্জিতেন earned by practising, তপসঃ by asceticism, তু প্রভাবেন by virtue of it, সর্বানেব all of you, বানরান্ monkeys, অস্মাত্ বিলাত্ from this cave, উদ্ধরিযিষ্যামি I will help you out.

'I will help all monkeys out of this cave by virtue of my power of asceticism duly practised.
নিমীলযত চক্ষূংষি সর্বে বানরপুঙ্গবাঃ!৷

সর্বে all, বানরপুঙ্গবাঃ great monkeys, চক্ষূংষি eyes, নিমীলযতঃ keep them closed, অনিমীলিতলোচনৈঃ if you do not close your eyes, নিষ্ক্রমিতুম্ to get out, নশক্যং হি is not possible.

ততস্সম্মীলিতাস্সর্বে সুকুমারাঙ্গুলৈঃ করৈঃ৷

সহসাপিদধুর্দৃষ্টিং হৃষ্টা গমনকাঙ্ক্ষযা৷৷4.53.9৷৷


ততঃ then, গমনকাঙ্ক্ষযা with a desire to get out, হৃষ্টাঃ joyful ones, সর্বে all, সম্মীলিতাঃ closed their eye lids, সহসা at once, সুকুমারাঙ্গুলৈঃ with delicate fingers, করৈঃ with hands, দৃষ্টিম্ eyes, পিদধুঃ closed.

Happy at the prospect of getting out (of the cave) they all not only closed their eyes but also covered them with their delicate fingers.

নিমেষান্তরমাত্রেণ বিলাদুত্তারিতাস্তযা৷৷4.53.10৷৷


তদা then, হস্তরুদ্ধমুখাঃ faces covered with hands, মহাত্মানঃ great souls, বানরাঃ monkeys, তযা with her help, নিমেষান্তরমাত্রেণ in a moment, বিলাত্ from the cave, উত্তারিতাঃ came out.

Then the great monkeys, faces covered with their hands, emerged from the cave in a moment.

ধর্মচারিণী righteous, তাপসী ascetic, তত্র there, তান্ সর্বান্ all of them, বিষমাত্ from the difficult situation, তস্মাত্ from that, নিস্সৃতান্ those who were released, সমাশ্বাস্য after consoling them all, ইদম্ these words, অব্রবীত্ said.

The righteous hermitess released all the monkeys out of that difficult situation and said these words of consolation:

এষ প্রস্রবণশ্শৈলস্সাগরোযং মহোদধিঃ৷৷4.53.12৷৷

এষঃ this, শ্রীমান্ rich, নানাদ্রুমলতাকুলঃ filled with different kinds of trees and vines, বিন্ধ্যঃ Vindhya, গিরিঃ mountain, এষঃ this, প্রস্রবণঃ Prasravana, শৈলঃ hill, অযম্ this, সাগরঃ sea, মহোদধিঃ great ocean, বানরর্ষভাঃ bulls among monkeys বঃ you, স্বস্তি be happy, অস্তু so be it, ভবনম্ to my house, গমিষ্যামি I will go, ইতি thus, উক্ত্বা having said, স্বযম্প্রভা Svayamprabha, শ্রীমত্ splendid, তত্ বিলম্ that cave, প্রবিবেশ entered.

'This Vindhya mountain has a rich collection of trees and bushes. This is Prasravana hill and this is the great ocean.O monkeys. Good luck to you. (Now) I am going back home'. Having said so, Svayamprabha entered the splendid cave.

Then the monkeys saw the boundless, dreary ocean roaring wild with its terrific waves spread all over.

তেষাম্ for them, মযস্য Maya's, মাযাবিহিতম্ created by his Maya, গিরিদুর্গম্ impassable mountain, বিচিন্বতাম্ while searching, যঃ such, রাজ্ঞা by the king, সমযঃ time set, কৃতঃ was fixed, মাসঃ month, ব্যতিক্রান্তঃ exceeded.

While they were ransacking the impassable mountain created with the magical powers of Maya, the time limit of one month set by the king was over.
বিন্ধ্যস্য তু গিরেঃ পাদে সম্প্রপুষ্পিতপাদপে৷

উপবিশ্য মহাভাগাশ্চিন্তামাপেদিরে তদা৷৷4.53.16৷৷


তদা then, মহাভাগা: great souls, সম্প্রপুষ্পিতপাদপে in a location where trees are in full bloom, বিন্ধ্যস্য তু of Vindhya, গিরেঃ of that mountain, পাদে adjacent, উপবিশ্য sat, চিন্তাম্ thinking, আপেদিরে did.

Then the high-soul monkeys reached the hill adjacent to Vindhya mountain on which trees were in full bloom.They sat there, lost in thought.
ততঃ পুষ্পাতিভারাগ্রান্ লতাশতসমাবৃতান্৷

দ্রুমান্বাসন্তিকান্দৃষ্টবা বভূবুর্ভযশঙ্কিতাঃ৷৷4.53.17৷৷


ততঃ then, পুষ্পাতিভারাগ্রান্ heavily loaded with flowers on top, লতাশতসমাবৃতান্ entwined by hundreds of creepers, বাসন্তিকান্ spring, দ্রুমান্ trees, দৃষ্ট্বা saw, ভযশঙ্কিতাঃ frightened, বভূবুঃ became.

Alarmed at the thought (of transgression of time limit), the monkeys kept looking at the tree tops entwined with a hundred oreepers heavily loaded with the flowers of spring.

Having realised (looking at the flowers) that spring has set in and they have exceeded the time limit, they all fell down on the ground.

ততঃ then, সিংহবৃষস্কন্ধঃ one who has shoulders like a lion or bull, পীনাযতভুজঃ of sturdy and long arms, যুবরাজঃ heir apparent, মহাপ্রাজ্ঞঃ very wise, কপিঃ monkey, অঙ্গদঃ Angada, তান্ them, কপিবৃদ্ধাংস্তু to the elderly monkeys, শিষ্টান্ respectable, বনৈকসশ্চৈব forest-dwellers (monkeys), মধুরযা with a sweet, বাচা tone, আভাষ্য spoke, যথাবত্ properly, অনুমান্য চ after coming to a decision, বাক্যম্ these words, অব্রবীত্ said.

Coming to a conclusion after due deliberation Angada, heir apparent, profoundly wise, endowed with sturdy and broad shoulders like those of a lion or a bull, spoke in a sweet voice to the elderly, respectable monkeys, dwellers of the forest:

'O monkeys! don't you realize that all of us have come here at the command of the monkey king, and while we were in the cave a whole month has gone by?

'We started our journey in the month of Ashvayuja with a certain time limit. That has exceeded. What is the future course of action?

সর্বে all, কর্মসু in actions, অপ্রতিমাঃ incomparable, দিক্ষু in all quarters, বিশ্রুতপৌরুষাঃ very famous for bravery, পিঙ্গাক্ষপ্রতিচোদিতাঃ sent by tawny-eyed Sugriva, মাম্ me, পুরস্কৃত্য obeying the orders, নির্যাতাঃ you have followed me.

'You are all celebrated for bravery and incomparable in your activities. You have followed me in obedience to the orders of the tawny-eyed Sugriva.
ইদানীমকৃতার্থানাং মর্তব্যং নাত্র সংশযঃ৷

হরিরাজস্য সন্দেশমকৃত্বা কস্সুখী ভবেত্৷৷4.53.25৷৷


ইদানীম্ at this time, অকৃতার্থানাম্ not having achieved the objective (of finding Sita), মর্তব্যম্ we should die, অত্র here, সংশযঃ doubt, ন not, হরিরাজস্য the king's, সন্দেশম্ orders, অকৃত্বা not executing, কঃ who, সুখী happy, ভবেত্ will be

'We should be killed since we have failed to achieve the objective (of finding Sita). There is no doubt about it. Who can live in peace without executing the orders of the king?
তস্মিন্নতীতে কালে তু সুগ্রীবেণ কৃতে স্বযম্৷

প্রাযোপবেশনং যুক্তং সর্বেষাং চ বনৌকসাম্৷৷4.53.26৷৷


সুগ্রীবেণ by Sugriva, কৃতে fixed, তস্মিন্ কালে at this time, অতীতে when exceeded, সর্বেষাম্ for all of us,বনৌকসাম্ for the forest dwellers (monkeys) স্বযম্ personally, প্রাযোপবেশনম্ fasting unto death, যুক্তম্ is right.

'Now that the time limit fixed by Sugriva has expired, the right thing to do for the monkeys is to fast unto death.

ন ক্ষমিষ্যতি নস্সর্বানপরাধকৃতো গতান্৷৷4.53.27৷৷


সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, প্রকৃত্যা by nature, তীক্ষ্ণঃ harsh, স্বামিভাবে as a king, ব্যবস্থিতঃ consecrated, গতান্ when we reach, অপরাধকৃতঃ us who are real offenders, নঃ not, সর্বান্ to all, ন ক্ষমিষ্যতি will not forgive us.

'By nature Sugriva is harsh, and being a king now, he will not forgive us who are real offenders and have not done the task assigned.
অপ্রবৃত্তৌ চ সীতাযাঃ পাপমেব করিষ্যতি৷

তস্মাত্ ক্ষমমিহাদ্যৈব গন্তুং প্রাযোপবেশনম্ হি নঃ৷৷4.53.28৷৷

ত্যক্ত্বা পুত্রাংশ্চ দারাংশ্চ ধনানি চ গৃহাণি চ৷


সীতাযাঃ Sita, অপ্রবৃত্তৌ for not bringing any clue, পাপমেব sin, করিষ্যতি he will do, তস্মাত্ therefore, পুত্রাংশ্চ sons, দারাংশ্চ wives, ধনানি চ and wealth, গৃহাণি চ and houses, ত্যক্ত্যা bid farewell to, ইহ here, অদ্যৈব today itself, প্রাযোপবেশনম্ death, গন্তুম্ take recourse, ক্ষমম্ proper.

ধৃবং নো হিংসিতা রাজা সর্বান্প্রতিগতানিতঃ৷৷4.53.29৷৷

বধেনাপ্রতিরূপেণ শ্রেযান্মৃত্যুরিহৈব নঃ৷


রাজা king, ইতঃ here, প্রতিগতান্ when we return, নঃ us, সর্বান্ all, অপ্রতিরূপেণ in an incomparable manner, বধেন with death sentence, ধ্রুবম্ surely, হিংসিতা will torture us, নঃ us, ইহৈব here itself, মৃত্যু: death, শ্রেযান্ it is better.

'Surely the king will torture us by awarding death sentence in a singular manner when we go back. It is better for us to meet death here itself.

অহম্ I, সুগ্রীবেণ by Sugriva, যৌবরাজ্যেন as heir apparent, ন অভিষেচিতঃ not installed, অক্লিষ্টকর্মণা who never harms others, নরেন্দ্রেণ by the king of the people, রামেণ by Rama, অভিষিক্তঃ crowned -prince, অস্মি I was.

'I was not installed as heir apparent by Sugriva. I was made crowned -prince by king Rama, the king of the people who never hurts others.
স পূর্বং বদ্ধবৈরো মাং রাজা দৃষ্ট্বা ব্যতিক্রমম্৷৷4.53.31৷৷

ঘাতযিষ্যতি দণ্ডেন তীক্ষ্ণেন কৃতনিশ্চযঃ৷


পূর্বম্ earlier, বদ্ধবৈরঃ nursed bitter enmity, সঃ রাজা that king, ব্যতিক্রমম্ lapse, দৃষ্ট্বা after seeing, কৃতনিশ্চযঃ decidedly, মাম্ me, তীক্ষ্ণেন with a severe, দণ্ডেন with punishment, ঘাতযিষ্যতি he will inflict.

'The Monkey-king nursed bitter enmity against me even earlier. Now seeing my lapse, he will decidedly inflict severe punishment on me.

ইহৈব প্রাযমাসিষ্যে পুণ্যে সাগররোধসি৷


জীবিতান্তরে at the end of life, মে ব্যসনম্ my calamity, পশ্যদ্ভিঃ by seeing, সুহৃদভি: by my friends, কিম্ what, ইহৈব here itself, পুণ্যে in a sacred, সাগররোধসি on the shores of the ocean, প্রাযমাসিষ্যে I shall sit down and await my death.

'I do not want my friends to see my calamity, my death. I shall sit here on the sacred shores of this ocean and await my death'.
এতচ্ছ্রুত্বা কুমারেণ যুবরাজেন ভাষিতম্৷৷4.53.33৷৷

সর্বে তে বানরশ্রেষ্ঠাঃ করুণং বাক্যমব্রুবন্৷


যুবরাজেন by heir apparent, কুমারেণ by the young prince, ভাষিতম্ talk, এতত্ this, শ্রুত্বা heard, সর্বে all, তে they, বানরশ্রেষ্ঠাঃ best of the monkeys করুণম্ kindly, বাক্যম্ these words, অব্রুবন্ said.

Hearing the young heir apparent thus speaking, the best of the monkeys kindly responded:
তীক্ষ্ণঃ প্রকৃত্যা সুগ্রীবঃ প্রিযাসক্তশ্চ রাঘবঃ৷৷4.53.34৷৷

অদৃষ্টাযাং তু বৈদেহ্যাং দৃষ্ট্বাস্মাংশ্ত সমাগতান্৷

রাঘবপ্রিযকামার্থং ঘাতযিষ্যত্যসংশযম্৷৷4.53.35৷৷


সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, প্রকৃত্যা by nature, তীক্ষ্ণঃ harsh, রাঘব: Rama, প্রিযাসক্তঃ devoted to his wife, বৈদেহ্যাম্ princess of Videha, অদৃষ্টাযাম্ when she is not found, অস্মান্ us, তু indeed, সমাগতান্ reaching, দৃষ্ট্বা on seeing, রাঘবপ্রিযকামার্থম্ in order to please Rama, অসংশযম্ without any doubt, ঘাতযিষ্যতি he will punish us to death.

'By nature Sugriva is harsh. Rama is devoted to his wife. Therefore, if Sugriva sees that we have not found Vaidehi and have returned (without fulfilling the mission) he will award death sentence to us in order to please Rama.There is no doubt.

ইহৈব সীতামন্বিষ্য প্রবৃত্তিমুপলভ্য বা৷৷4.53.36৷৷

নো চেদ্গচ্ছাম তং বীরং গমিষ্যামো যমক্ষযম্৷


অপরাদ্ধানাম্ for offenders, স্বামিপার্শ্বতঃ to the king's presence, গমনম্ going, নক্ষমম্ is not proper, ইহৈব here itself, সীতাম্ Sita, অন্বিষ্য after searching, প্রবৃত্তিম্ whereabouts, উপলভ্য বা or after finding out, তং বীরম্ to that hero, নো গচ্ছাম চেত্ if we cannot go, যমক্ষযম্ to the abode of Yama, গমিষ্যামঃ we will go.

'Those who have failed in their mission, being offenders should not go to meet the king. Offenders are not forgiven. Here itself we will search for Sita and if we are able to know her whereabouts we will go back. Or else we will go to the abode of Yama'.

তারঃ Tara, ভযার্দিতানাম্ those shaken with fear, প্লবঙ্গমানাম্ of the monkeys, বচঃ words, শ্রুত্বা after hearing, ইদম্ this, বভাষে he spoke, বিষাদেন with sorrow, অলম্ enough, বঃ to you, রোচতে যদি if it pleases you, সর্বে all of us, বিলম্ cave, প্রবিশ্য after entering, বসাম let us reside.

'On hearing the words of the frightened monkeys, Tara said, 'Enough of this sorrow. If it pleases you, we will all go to the cave and reside there' ''

প্রভূতবৃক্ষোদকভোজ্যপেযকম্৷

ইহাস্তি নো নৈব ভযং পুরন্দরা

মাযাবিহিতম্ built by magic, প্রভূতবৃক্ষোদকভোজ্যপেযকম্ with many trees, water, food and drinks, ইদম্ this, সুদুর্গমং হি inaccessible, ইহ here, নঃ for us, পুরন্দরাত্ from Indra, the breaker of enemy citadel, ভযম্ fear, নৈব not there, রাঘবাত্ of Rama even, বানররাজতোপি বা also of king of monkeys, ন not.

'This cave built by magic is inaccessible. It has a number of trees, water, eatables and drinks. (If we live here) we need not be afraid of even Indra, the breaker of enemy citadels or even of Rama or also of the king of monkeys'.
শ্রুত্বাঙ্গদস্যাপি বচোনুকূল-

মূচুশ্চ সর্বে হরযঃ প্রতীতাঃ৷

যথা ন হিংস্যেম তথা বিধান-

মসক্তমদ্যৈব বিধীযতাং নঃ৷৷4.53.39৷৷


অঙ্গদস্য Angada's, বচঃ words, শ্রুত্বা after hearing, সর্বে all, হরযঃ monkeys, প্রতীতাঃ became agreeable, অনুকূলম্ favourable, ঊচুঃ spoke, যথা as, ন হিংস্যেম we will not be punished, তথা that way, নঃ for us, অদ্যৈব now itself, বিধানম্ strategy, অসক্তম্ not conditional, বিদীযতাম্ be planned.

All the monkeys agreed to the favourable suggestion of Tara which was acceptable to Angada. 'A plan may be made in such a way by which we will not be killed by the king. Our strategy should be delinked from the conditions laid down by the king. Let us not face punishment' said the monkeys.
