[Hanuman's startegy to change Angada.]

তথা ব্রুবতি তারে তু তারাধিপতিবর্চসি৷

অথ মেনে হৃতং রাজ্যং হনূমানঙ্গদেন তত্৷৷4.54.1৷৷


তারাধিপতিবর্চসি face like the moon, lord of stars, তারে when Tara, তথা thus, ব্রুবতি spoke, অথ then, হনূমান্ Hanuman, অঙ্গদেন by Angada, তত্ that, রাজ্যম্ kingdom, হৃতম্ taken over, মেনে thought.

Hanuman listened to the proposal of Tara, whose face was like the Moon, lord of the stars. (After listening to Tara) he thought Angada might take over the kingdom from Sugriva.
বুদ্ধ্যা হ্যষ্টাঙ্গযা যুক্তং চতুর্বলসমন্বিতম্৷

চতুর্দশগুণং মেনে হনূমান্বালিনস্সুতম্৷৷4.54.2৷৷


হনূমান্ Hanuman, বালিনঃ Vali's, সুতম্ son, অষ্টাঙ্গযা with eight limbs, বুদ্ধ্যা with intellect, যুক্তম্ endowed, চতুর্বলসমন্বিতম্ possessed of four kinds of strength, চতুর্দশগুণম্ having fourteen qualities, মেনে thought.

Hanuman thought Vali's son possessed in addition to his intellect, eight kinds of limbs, four kinds of strength and fourteen qualities (required of a king):
আপূর্যমাণং শশ্বচ্চ তেজোবলপরাক্রমৈঃ৷

শশিনং শুক্লপক্ষাদৌ বর্ধমানমিব শ্রিযা৷৷4.54.3৷৷

বৃহস্পতিসমং বুদ্ধ্যা বিক্রমে সদৃশং পিতুঃ৷

শুশ্রূষমাণং তারস্য শক্রস্যেব পুরন্দরম্৷৷4.54.4৷৷

ভর্তুরর্থে পরিশ্রান্তং সর্বশাস্ত্রবিদাংবরম্৷

অভিসন্ধাতুমারেভে হনূমানঙ্গদং ততঃ৷৷4.54.5৷৷


শশ্বত্ eternally, তেজোবলপরাক্রমৈঃ with brilliance, strength and valour, আপূর্যমাণম্ being filled, শুক্লপক্ষাদৌ at the beginning of the bright fortnight, শশিনমিব like the Moon, শ্রিযা with majesty, বর্ধমানম্ constantly growing, বুদ্ধ্যা in intellect, বৃহস্পতিসমম্ equal to Brhaspati, বিক্রমে in valour, পিতুঃ of his father, সদৃশম্ like to, শুক্রস্য Sukra's, পুরন্দরম্ ইব like Indra, the breaker of citadel, তারস্য Tara's, শুশ্রূষমাণম্ serving, ভর্তুঃ the king, অর্থে for the sake of, পরিশ্রান্তম্ tired, অঙ্গদম্ Angada, সর্বশাশ্ত্রবিদাংবরম্ versed in all sastras, হনুমান্ Hanuman, ততঃ then, অভিসন্ধাতুম্ to consult deliberately, আরেভে started.

Hanuman proceeded to win over Angada, who was ever shining in strength and valour, who was growing in majesty constantly like the Moon in the bright fornight, whose intellectual prowess was equal to that of Brhaspati, who was equal to his father in valour and who was well-versed in all sastras. Angada was listening toTara like Indra listened to Sukra (preceptor of the demons).

ভেদযামাস তান্সর্বান্ বানরান্বাক্যসম্পদা৷৷4.54.6৷৷


সঃ that, চতুর্ণাম্ of the four, উপাযানাম্ of means, তৃতীযম্ third one, উপবর্ণযন্ while describing, তান্সর্বান্ all of them, বানরান্ monkeys, বাক্যসম্পদা with wealth of arguments, ভেদযামাস created differences.

Resorting to the third strategy out of the four ways of achieving an objective Hanuman created differences among the monkeys with skilful arguments. (Sama, Dana, Bheda and Danda are the four means. Hanuman adopted Bheda as a means of winning over an enemy).
তেষু সর্বেষু ভিন্নেষু ততোভীষযদঙ্গদম্৷

ভীষণৈর্ভহুভির্বাক্যৈ: কোপোপাযসমন্বিতৈঃ৷৷4.54.7৷৷


তেষু of them, সর্বেষু all, ভিন্নেষু of the differences, ততঃ then, কোপোপাযসমন্বিতৈঃ strategy to cause both anger and expediency, ভীষণৈঃ with frightening, বহুভি: by many, বাক্যৈঃ with arguments, অঙ্গদম্ to Angada, অভীষযত্ frightened.

When there were differences among the monkeys over the issue, Hanuman intimidated Angada with frightening words expressing his anger, using skilful arguments:
ত্বং সমর্থতরঃ পিত্রা যুদ্ধে তারেয বৈ ধুরম্৷

দৃঢং ধারযিতুং শক্তঃ কপিরাজ্যং যথা পিতা৷৷4.54.8৷৷


তারেয O son of Tara, ত্বম্ you, যুদ্ধে in combat, পিত্রা compared to your father, সমর্থতরঃ you are very efficient, বৈ indeed, ধুরম্ yoke (responsibility of running the kingdom), পিতা যথা like your father, কপিরাজ্যম্ kingdom of the monkeys, দৃঢম্ firmly, ধারযিতুম্ to hold, শক্তঃ capable.

'O Son of Tara! you are, indeed, very efficient like your father in combat. You can hold firmly the responsibilty of the vanara kingdom like your father.
নিত্যমস্থিরচিত্তা হি কপযো হরিপুঙ্গব!৷

নাজ্ঞাপ্যং বিষহিষ্যন্তি পুত্রদারান্বিনা ত্বযা৷৷4.54.9৷৷


হরিপুঙ্গব O leader of monkeys, কপযঃ vanaras, নিত্যম্ always, অস্থিরচিত্তাঃ হি they are fickle minded, পুত্রদারান্ sons and wives, বিনা without, ত্বযা with you, আজ্ঞাপ্যম্ command, ন বিষহিষ্যন্তি will never tolerate.

'O leader among monkeys! Vanaras are always fickle-minded. Being away from their sons and wives they will not always carry out your command and stay here forever.

'This I am telling you openly and frankly. These monkeys are not going to be obedient to you. Neither Jambavan, nor Nila nor the great monkey Suhotra nor even myself would subscribe to this opinion (of staying in the cave) and follow you. It is not possible for you to keep us or these monkeys from Sugriva through the policy of appeasement like Sama, Dana, Bheda or even Danda (persuasion, giving gifts, creating differences or imposing punishment).
বিগৃহ্যাসনমপ্যাহুর্দুর্বলেন বলীযসঃ৷

আত্মরক্ষাকরস্তস্মান্ন বিগৃহ্ণীত দুর্বলঃ৷৷4.54.12৷৷


বলীযস: with a strong man, দুর্বলেন by a weak one, বিগৃহ্য waging war, আসনম্ অপি remaining quiet, watching (a kind of war strategy), আহুঃ it is said, তস্মাত্ therefore, আত্মরক্ষাকরঃ for self-protection, দুর্বলঃ a weak one, ন বিগৃহ্ণীত should not wage.

'It is said that when a strong man fights a weak one, the weak opponent should adopt the strategy of asana (watching) for self-protection. The weak should not enter into combat with the strong.
যাং চেমাং মন্যসে ধাত্রীমেতদ্বিলমিতি শ্রুতম্৷

এতল্লক্ষ্মণবাণানামীষত্কার্যং বিদারণে৷৷4.54.13৷৷


যাম্ whichever, ইমাম্ this, ধাত্রীম্ earth, মন্যসে you may be thinking, এতত্ this, বিলম্ cave, ইতি in this way, শ্রুতম্ is known, লক্ষ্মণবাণানাম্ for the arrows of Lakshmana, এতত্ this, বিদারণম্ breaking, ঈষত্কার্যম্ is a very small task.

'You may think it safe to stay here in this opening of the earth. It is a petty task for the arrows of Lakshmana to break open this so-called cave.
স্বল্পং হি কৃতমিন্দ্রেণ ক্ষিপতা হ্যশনিং পুরা৷

লক্ষ্মণো নিশিতৈর্বাণৈর্ভিন্ধ্যাত্পত্রপুটং যথা৷৷4.54.14৷৷


পুরা earlier, অশনিম্ a thunderbolt, ক্ষিপতা by throwing, ইন্দ্রেণ by Indra, স্বল্পম্ a little, কৃতং হি has done, লক্ষ্মণঃ Lakshmana, নিশিতৈ: with sharp ones, বাণৈঃ with arrows, পত্রপুটম্ যথা like tearing a leaf cup, ভিন্দ্যাত্ he can shatter.

'In the past Indra had done a small damage (to the cave) with his thunderbolt. But with his sharp arrows Lakshmana will shatter the cave easily as though it is a leaf cup.

বজ্রাশনিসমস্পর্শা গিরীণামপি দারণাঃ৷৷4.54.15৷৷

'Lakshmna has many such iron arrows that are equal to the thunderbolt. They can even split the mountains.

তদৈব হরযস্সর্বে ত্যক্ষ্যন্তি কৃতনিশ্চযাঃ৷4.54.16৷৷


পরন্তপ! O scorcher of enemies, ত্বম্ you, যদৈব whenever, অবস্থানে to stay here, আসিষ্যসি decide, তদৈব at that moment, সর্বে all these, হরযঃ monkeys, কৃতনিশ্চযাঃ decidedly, ত্যক্ষ্যন্তি desert

'O scorcher of enemies! the moment you decide to establish yourself here, all these
monkeys will surely desert you.
স্মরন্তঃ পুত্রদারাণাং নিত্যোদ্বিগ্না বুভুক্ষিতাঃ৷

খেদিতা দুঃখশয্যাভিস্ত্বাং করিষ্যন্তি পৃষ্ঠতঃ৷৷4.54.17৷৷


পুত্রদারাণাম্ about their sons and wives, স্মরন্তঃ while they are remembering, নিত্যোদ্বিগ্নাঃ always anxious, বুভুক্ষিতাঃ hungry ones, দুঃখশয্যাভিঃ with inconvenient beds, খেদিতাঃ depressed, ত্বাম্ you, পৃষ্ঠতঃ করিষ্যন্তি will leave you behind.

'The memory of their sons and wives will haunt these hungry monkeys. The inconvenient bed will make them so depressed that they will leave you behind.

তৃণাদপি ভৃশোদ্বিগ্নস্স্পন্দমানাদ্ভবিষ্যসি৷৷4.54.18৷৷


সুহৃদ্ভিশ্চ even with friends also, হিতকামৈঃ by the well-wishers, বন্ধুভিশ্চ even with your relatives, হীনঃ left out, সঃ ত্বম্ such a person, স্পন্দমানাত্ trembling, তৃণাদপি from a blade of grass, ভৃশোদ্বিগ্নঃ you will be very much frightened, ভবিষ্যসি you will be.

'Left out of your friends and relatives,who are your well-wishers, you will be very frightened even by the trembling of a blade of grass.

'It is not that Lakshmana's dreadful arrows flying at great speed will not torture you. It will be difficult for you to avert them as they are eager to kill an escaping enemy.

আনুপূর্ব্যাত্তু সুগ্রীবো রাজ্যে ত্বাং স্থাপযিষ্যতি৷৷4.54.21৷৷


অস্মাভিঃ সার্ধম্ along with us, গতম্ when you go, বিনীতবত্ humbly, উপস্থিতম্ approached, ত্বাম্ you, সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, রাজ্যে in the kingdom, আনুপূর্ব্যাত্ following the law of succession, স্থাপযিষ্যতি he will make you king, তু indeed.

'If along with us you approach Sugriva in a humble manner he will make you his successor to the kingdom.
ধর্মকামঃ পিতৃব্যস্তে প্রীতিকামো দৃঢব্রতঃ৷

শুচিস্সত্যপ্রতিজ্ঞশ্চ ন ত্বাং জাতু জিঘাংসতি৷৷4.54.22৷৷

'Your father's brother is virtuous, well-intentioned, loving, steadfast in action, and true to his promise. He will not kill you.

তস্যাপত্যং চ নাস্ত্যন্যত্তস্মাদঙ্গদ! গম্যতাম্৷৷4.54.23৷৷

'Your mother is his life and he would love to please her. He has no offspring other than you. Therefore, go back.'
