[Samapati narrates his story to the monkeys says he saw Sita being carried off by Ravana to Lanka.]

ইত্যুক্তঃ করুণং বাক্যং বানরৈস্ত্যক্তজীবিতৈঃ৷

সবাষ্পো বানরান্গৃধ্রঃ প্রত্যুবাচ মহাস্বনঃ৷৷4.58.1৷৷


ত্যক্তজীবিতৈঃ who had given up hope of life, বানরৈঃ by monkeys, ইতি thus, করুণম্ pathetic, বাক্যম্ words, উক্তঃ spoken, মহাস্বনঃ loud-voiced, গৃধ্রঃ vulture, সবাষ্পঃ with tears, বানরান্ the monkeys, প্রত্যুবাচ replied.

On hearing the pathetic words from the monkeys who had given up hope of life, the loud-voiced vulture wailing replied:
যবীযান্মম ভ্রাতা জটাযুর্নাম বানরাঃ৷

যমাখ্যাত হতং যুদ্ধে রাবণেন বলীযসা৷৷4.58.2৷৷


বানরাঃ O monkeys, যম্ whom, বলীযসা by a strong, রাবণেন by Ravana, যুদ্ধে in the combat, হতম্ killed, আখ্যাত you told, জটাযুঃ নাম called Jatayu, সঃ he is, মম my, যবীযান্ younger, ভ্রাতা brother.

'O monkeys, the one you said to have been killed by mighty Ravana in a combat was my younger brother, Jatayu.
বৃদ্ধভাবাদপক্ষত্বাচ্ছৃণ্বংস্তদপি মর্ষযে৷

ন হি মে শক্তিরস্ত্যদ্য ভ্রাতুর্বৈরবিমোক্ষণে৷৷4.58.3৷৷


তত্ that, শ্রুণ্বন্ অপি even after hearing , বৃদ্ধভাবাত্ due to old age, অপক্ষত্বাত্ since I have no wings, মে to me, অদ্য now, ভ্রাতুঃ brother's, বৈরবিমোক্ষণে to avenge the death, শক্তিঃ energy, নাস্তি হি I do not have.

'Even after I have heard this, I cannot avenge my brother's death as I am old, I have no wings, and I have no energy enough (to fight).

পুরা in olden days, বৃত্রবধে at the time of the death of Vrutra, বৃত্তে পরস্পর when Vrutra and Indra, জযৈষিণৌ wishing to win, জ্বলন্তম্ blazing, রশ্মিমালিনম্ with a garland of beams, আদিত্যম্ to Sun, উপযাতৌ both went, স্বঃ we both.

'In olden days, when Indra killed Vrutra we (Jatayu and I) seeking to challenge him reached the Sun blazing with a garland of beams.
আবৃত্ত্যাকাশমার্গে তু জবেন স্ম গতৌ ভৃশম্৷

মধ্যং প্রাপ্তে দিনকরে জটাযুরবসীদতি৷৷4.58.5৷৷


আকাশমার্গে in the sky, আবৃত্য surrounding, ভৃশম্ violently, জবেন at high speed, গতৌ স্ম both of us reached, মধ্যম্ in the midst, প্রাপ্তে when reached, দিনকরে when the Sun, জটাযুঃ Jatayu's, অবসীদতি became weak.

'Flying in the sky at a violently high speed, we reached the meridian of the Sun when, unable to bear the heat, Jatayu became weak.
তমহং ভ্রাতরং দৃষ্ট্বা সূর্যরশ্মিভিরর্দিতম্৷

পক্ষাভ্যাং ছাদযামাস স্নেহাত্পরমবিহ্বলঃ৷৷4.58.6৷৷


ভ্রাতরম্ my brother, তম্ him, সূর্যরশ্মিভিঃ with Sun's radiance, অর্দিতম্ tormented, দৃষ্ট্বা on seeing, পরমবিহ্বল: overwhelmed, অহম্ I, স্নেহাত্ lovingly, পক্ষাভ্যাম্ with both my wings, ছাদযামাস I covered.

'Seeing my brother tormented due to the Sun's radiance I was overwhelmed with
grief. Out of love I covered him with both my wings.
নির্দগ্ধপক্ষঃ পতিতো বিন্ধ্যেহং বানরর্ষভাঃ৷

অহমস্মিন্বসন্ভ্রাতুঃ প্রবৃত্তিং নোপলক্ষযে৷৷4.58.7৷৷


বানরর্ষভাঃ O bulls among monkeys, অহম্ I am, নির্দগ্ধপত্রঃ with burnt wings, বিন্ধ্যে on Vindhya, পতিতঃ dropped down, অস্মিন্ in this place, বসন্ while I lived, অহম্ I, ভ্রাতুঃ brother's, প্রবৃত্তিম্ news, নোপলক্ষযে not known to me.

'O bulls among monkeys, consequently my wings were burnt and I dropped down on Vindhya. Here I have been living, knowing not my brother's whereabouts.'
জটাযুষস্ত্বেবমুক্তো ভ্রাত্রা সম্পাতিনা তদা৷

যুবরাজো মহাপ্রাজ্ঞঃ প্রত্যুবাচাঙ্গদস্ততঃ৷৷4.58.8৷৷


তদা then, জটাযুষঃ Jatayu's, ভ্রাত্রা by brother, সম্পাতিনা by Sampathi, এবম্ in that way, উক্তঃ having been told, মহাপ্রাজ্ঞঃ highly learned one, যুবরাজঃ heir apparent, অঙ্গদঃ Angada, ততঃ then, প্রত্যুবাচ replied.

To these words of Jatayu's brother, Sampati, Angada, the learned heir apparent replied:
জটাযুষো যদি ভ্রাতা শ্রুতং তে গদিতং মযা৷

আখ্যা হি যদি জানাসি নিলযং তস্য রক্ষসঃ৷৷4.58.9৷৷


তে your, গদিতম্ word, মযা by me, শ্রুতম্ is heard, জটাযুষঃ Jatayu's, ভ্রাতা যদি if you are brother, জানাসি যদি if you know, তস্য his, রক্ষসঃ demon's নিলযম্ residence, আখ্যাহি tell.

'I have heard you. If you are the brother of Jatayu, tell us about the abode of that demon if you know.
অদীর্ঘদর্শিনং তং বৈ রাবণং রাক্ষসাধিপম্৷

অন্তিকে যদি বা দূরে যদি জানাসি শংস নঃ৷৷4.58.10৷৷


অদীর্ঘদর্শিনম্ one who is not far-sighted, রাক্ষসাধিপম্ king of demons, তং রাবণম্ that Ravana, অন্তিকে near, দূরে যদি বা far away, জানাসি যদি if you know, নঃ us, শংস tell.

'Tell us about Ravana, king of the demons who is unaware of the consequences. If you know his residence, tell us if it is near or far.'
ততোব্রবীন্মহাতেজা জ্যেষ্ঠো ভ্রাতা জটাযুষঃ৷

আত্মানুরূপং বচনং বানরান্সম্প্রহর্ষযন্৷৷4.58.11৷৷


ততঃ then, জটাযুষঃ Jatayu's, জ্যেষ্ঠঃ ভ্রাতা elder brother, মহাতেজাঃ very glorious, বানরান্ monkeys, অত্মানুরূপম্ in a befitting manner, বচনম্ these words, অব্রবীত্ said, সম্প্রহর্ষযন্ while pleasing them.

Then Jatayu's elder brother, the glorious Sampati, said these pleasing, befitting words:
নির্দগ্ধপক্ষো গৃধ্রোহং হীনবীর্য: প্লবঙ্গমাঃ!৷

বাঙ্মাত্রেণ তু রামস্য করিষ্যে সাহ্যমুত্তমম্৷৷4.58.12৷৷


প্লবঙ্গমাঃ O monkeys!, নির্দগ্ধপক্ষঃ my wings are totally burnt, হীনবীর্যঃ my strength is reduced, গৃধ্রঃ vulture, অহম্ I, বাঙ্মাত্রেণা only by my words, রামস্য to Rama, উত্তমম্ substantial, সাহ্যম্ help, করিষ্যে I will do.

'O monkeys! I am a vulture. My wings are burnt and my strength is depleted. The only substantial help I can render Rama is through my words.
জানামি বারুণান্লোকান্বিষ্ণোস্ত্রৈ বিক্রমানপি৷

মহাসুরবিমর্দন্বা শ্চ হ্যমৃতস্য চ মন্থনম্৷৷4.58.13৷৷


বারুণান্ Varuna's, লোকান্ world, ত্রৈবিক্রমান্ three strides, বিষ্ণোঃ Visnu's, লোকান্ worlds, মহাসুরবিমর্দান্ the fricton between gods and demons, অমৃতস্য for the nectar , চ মন্থনম্ and the churning, জানামি I know, অপি indeed.

'I know Varuna's worlds(seas and oceans) and all the three worlds measured by three strides by Vamana. Indeed I also know about the friction between the great gods and demons and the churning of the ocean for nectar.
রামস্য যদিদং কার্যং কর্তব্যং প্রথমং মযা৷

জরযা চ হৃতং তেজঃ প্রাণাশ্চ শিথিলা মম৷৷4.58.14৷৷


রামস্য Rama's, যত্ if, ইদং কার্যম্ this task, মযা by me, প্রথমম্ first, কর্তব্যম্ duty, হৃতম্ should be done, প্রাণাশ্চ vitality, শিথিলাঃ reduced, মম my, জরযা due to old age, তেজ: strength.

'Rama's work is my primary duty. (But) my strength is drained by age and I have lost my vitality.
তরুণী রূপসম্পন্না সর্বাভরণভূষিতা৷

হ্রিযমাণা মযা দৃষ্টা রাবণেন দুরাত্মনা৷৷4.58.15৷৷

ক্রোশন্তী রাম রামেতি লক্ষ্মণেতি চ ভামিনী৷

ভূষণান্যপবিধ্যন্তী গাত্রাণি চ বিধুন্বতী৷৷4.58.16৷৷


দুরাত্মনা by the evil-minded, রাবণেন by Ravana, হ্রিযমাণা being borne away, তরুণী young lady, রূপসম্পন্না beautiful in appearance, সর্বাভরণভূষিতা adorned with all kinds of jewels, রামরামেতি calling out 'Rama, Rama', লক্ষ্মণেতি চ and calling out 'Lakshmana', ক্রোশন্তী crying aloud, ভূষণানি ornaments, অপবিধ্যন্তী thrown down, গাত্রাণি limbs,বিধূন্বতী wriggling to get out, ভামিনী a dainty lady, মযা by me, দৃষ্টা was seen.

'I saw a young lady of beautiful appearance, adorned with all kinds of ornaments borne away by the evil-minded Ravana. That dainty lady was calling out, 'O Rama, O Lakshmana' and was crying aloud. She was throwing away her ornaments and was
wriggling to get out of Ravana's grip.
সূর্যপ্রভেব শৈলাগ্রে তস্যাঃ কৌশেযমুত্তমম্৷

অসিতে রাক্ষসে ভাতি যথা বা তটিদম্বুদে৷৷4.58.17৷৷


অসিতে in dark, রাক্ষসে on the demon, তস্যাঃ her, উত্তমম্ fine, কৌশেযম্ silken cloth, শৈলাগ্রে on the peak of the mountain, সূর্যপ্রভেব like the radiance of Sun, অম্বুদে in the dark cloud, যথা like that, বা তটিত্ যথা like lightning, ভাতি shining.

'Her fine silk garment was shining like the radiance of the Sun on the mountain peak, like lightning against the dark cloud. (That was Ravana).
তাং তু সীতামহং মন্যে রামস্য পরিকীর্তনাত্৷

শ্রূযতাং মে কথযতো নিলযং তস্য রক্ষসঃ৷৷4.58.18৷৷


রামস্য Rama's, পরিকীর্তনাত্ was uttering, তাম্ her, সীতাম্ Sita, অহম্ I, মন্যে I think, তস্য his, রক্ষসঃ demon's, নিলযম্ abode, কথযতঃ described, মে by me, শ্রূযতাম্ you may listen.

'Since she was uttering Rama's name I think she is Sita. (Now) I will tell you about the demon's abode. Listen!

অধ্যাস্তে নগরীং লঙ্কাং রাবণো নাম রাক্ষসঃ৷৷4.58.19৷৷


বিশ্রবসঃ Vishravas's, পুত্রঃ son, সাক্ষাত্ real, বৈশ্রবণস্য Vyshravana's, ভ্রাতা brother, রাবণো নাম called Ravana, রাক্ষসঃ rakshasa, লঙ্কাং নগরীম্ city of Lanka, অধ্যাস্তে resides.

'He is Vishrava's son and half-brother of Vaishravana. His name is Ravana and he resides in the city of Lanka.

'The beautiful city of Lanka is an island, a hundred yojanas away from here.It was built by Visvakarma.

জাম্বূনদমযৈঃ made of gold, চিত্রৈঃ wonderful, দ্বারৈঃ doors, কাঞ্চনবেদিকৈঃ with golden platforms, হেমবর্ণৈশ্চ of golden colour, মহদ্ভিঃ with a huge, প্রাসাদৈঃ mansions, সুসমাঃ uniformly built, আবৃতা covered, অর্কবর্ণেন in the colour of Sun light, মহতা প্রাকারেণ with a tall boundary wall, সমন্বিতা endowed.

'The city has golden gates, golden platforms, huge, golden-coloured, uniformly built mansions surrounded by a tall boundary wall of the colour of sunlight.

দীনা dejected, কৌশেযবাসিনী lady wearing silk garment, বৈদেহী Vaidehi, তস্যাম্ in the city, রাবণান্তঃপুরে in the harem, রুদ্ধা confined, রাক্ষসীভিঃ by demonesses, সুরক্ষিতা well protected, বসতি lives, তস্যাম্ in that city, রাজ্ঞঃ the king's, জনকস্য Janaka's, আত্মজাম্ daughter, মৈথিলীম্ Maithili, দ্রক্ষ্যথ you will see.

'You will see in the city of Lanka, the princess from Videha, daughter of Janaka, a picture of dejection, robed in silk, confined in the harem of Ravana, well-protected by
demonesses.

তত্রৈব ত্বরিতাঃ ক্ষিপ্রং বিক্রমধ্বং প্লবঙ্গমাঃ৷৷4.58.25৷৷


প্লবঙ্গমাঃ O monkeys, সম্পূর্ণম্ a complete, শতযোজনম্ hundred yojanas, সাগরস্য of the sea, অন্তম্ end, সম্প্রাপ্য having reached, অথ then, দক্ষিণং তীরম্ southern coast, আসাদ্য on reaching, ততঃ then, সমন্ততঃ all around, সাগরেণ by the sea, গুপ্তাযাম্ protected, লঙ্কাযাম্ at Lanka, রাবণম্ Ravana, দ্রক্ষ্যথ will see, ত্বরিতাঃ swiftly, তত্রৈব there, ক্ষিপ্রম্ at once, বিক্রমধ্বম্ prove your strength.

'O monkeys! traverse a hundred yojanas across the sea. On reaching the southern coast you will be able to see Ravana's Lanka defended and surrounded by the sea. Now proceed swiftly and prove your strength.
জ্ঞানেন খলু পশ্যামি দৃষ্ট্বা প্রত্যাগমিষ্যথ৷

আদ্যঃ পন্থাঃ কুলিঙ্গানাং যে চান্যে ধান্যজীবিনঃ৷৷4.58.26৷৷

দ্বিতীযো বলিভোজানাং যে চ বৃক্ষফলাশিনঃ৷

ভাসাস্তৃতীযং গচ্ছন্তি ক্রৌঞ্চাশ্চ কুররৈস্সহ৷৷4.58.27৷৷

শ্যেনাশ্চতুর্থং গচ্ছন্তি গৃধ্রা গচ্ছন্তি পঞ্চমম্৷


জ্ঞানেন by intuition, পশ্যামি খলু I can see, দৃষ্টবা seeing, প্রত্যাগমিষ্যথ you will return, কুলিঙ্গানাম্ of sparrows, অন্যে and other, ধান্যজীবিনঃ living on grain, যে those, আদ্যঃ first, পন্থাঃ path, বলিভোজানাম্ crows living on the offerings of food, বৃক্ষফলাশনাঃ eating the fruits of trees, যে those, দ্বিতীযঃ second, ভাসাঃ cocks, কুররৈস্সহ along with cranes, ক্রৌঞ্চাশ্চ and Kraunchas, তৃতীযম্ third, গচ্ছন্তি move about, শ্যেনাঃ hawks and falcons, চতুর্থম্ fourth,
গচ্ছন্তি move about, গৃধ্রাঃ vultures, পঞ্চমম্ fifth, গচ্ছন্তি moving.

'By intuition I know you would see Sita and return. On the first plane you will see sparrows and birds which live on grain. On the second, you will see crows living on the food offered to the dead and birds living on the fruits of trees, and then cocks, cranes and kraunchas moving on the third plane, on the fourth, hawks and falcons and on the fifth, vultures.
বলবীর্যোপপন্নানাং রূপযৌবনশালিনাম্৷৷4.58.28৷৷

ষষ্ঠস্তু পন্থা হংসানাং বৈনতেযগতিঃ পরা৷

বৈনতেযাচ্চ নো জন্ম সর্বেষাং বানরর্ষভাঃ!৷৷4.58.29৷৷


বানরর্ষভাঃ O bulls among monkeys! বলবীর্যোপপন্নানাম্ endowed with strength and vigour, রূপযৌবনশালিনাম্ with beauty and youth, হংসানাম্ of swans, ষষ্ঠঃ the sixth, পন্থাঃ path, বৈনতেযগতিঃ the path of Garuda, পরা is over that, সর্বেষাম্ of all, নঃ of us, জন্ম birth, বৈনতেযাত্ from the son of Vinata (Garuda).

'O bulls among monkeys! swans blessed with strength, vigour, beauty and youth move in the sixth region. Beyond, on the seventh plane, you will see the descendants of Garuda.
ইহস্থোহং প্রপশ্যামি রাবণং জানকীং তথা৷

অস্মাকমপি সৌবর্ণং দিব্যং চক্ষুর্বলং তথা৷৷4.58.30৷৷


ইহস্থঃ from here, অহম্ I am, রাবণম্ Ravana, তথা so also, জানকীম্ Janaki also, প্রপশ্যামি I can see, অস্মাকমপি for us also, সৌবর্ণম্ golden, দিব্যম্ divine, চক্ষুঃ vision, তথা so also, বলম্ power.

'From here I see Ravana and Janaki. We (vultures) have a divine golden vision and great power.
তস্মাদাহারবীর্যেণ নিসর্গেণ চ বানরাঃ৷

আযোজনশতাত্সাগ্রাদ্বযং পশ্যাম নিত্যশঃ৷৷4.58.31৷৷


বানরাঃ O monkeys, তস্মাত্ therefore, বযম্ we, আহারবীর্যেণ with the strength of our food, নিসর্গেণ চ and by nature, সাগ্রাত্ from the edge, আযোজনশতাত্ up to a hundred yojanas, নিত্যশঃ always, পশ্যাম we can see.

'O monkeys! therefore, by the strength of food and by nature we can always see beyond a hundred yojanas from this edge.
অস্মাকং বিহিতা বৃত্তির্নিসর্গেণ চ দূরতঃ৷

বিহিতা পাদমূলে তু বৃত্তিশ্চরণযোধিনাম্৷৷4.58.32৷৷


অস্মাকম্ for us, বৃত্তি: movement, নিসর্গেণ by nature, দূরতঃ at a distance, বিহিতা is fixed (by destiny), চরণযোধিনাম্ for those fighting on foot, পাদমূলে at their feet, বৃত্তি: movement, বিহিতা is fixed.

'Our movement and vision naturally extends to distant places. For those fighting on foot, the movement is restricted to the extent of foot movement.
গর্হিতং তু কৃতং কর্ম যেন স্ম পশিতাশিনা৷

প্রতীকার্যং চ মে তস্য বৈরং ভ্রাতৃকৃতং ভবেত্৷৷4.58.33৷৷


যেন by whomsoever, গর্হিতম্ despised, কর্ম action, কৃতম্ done, তস্য পিশিতাশিনাঃ by that flesh-eater (demon), ভ্রাতৃকৃতং due to my brother's, বৈরং enmity, চ and, প্রতিকার্যম্ deserves retaliation, ভবেত্ it will be.

উপাযো দৃশ্যতাং কশ্চিল্লঙ্ঘনে লবণাম্ভসঃ৷

অভিগম্য তু বৈদেহীং সমৃদ্ধার্থা গমিষ্যথ৷৷4.58.34৷৷


লবণাম্ভসঃ of the salt ocean, লঙ্ঘনে in crossing, কশ্চিত্ some, উপাযঃ means, দৃশ্যতাম্ you may look for, বৈদেহীম্ Vaidehi, অভিগম্য after approaching her, সমৃদ্ধার্থাঃ as accomplished ones, গমিষ্যথ you will return.

'Look out for some means to cross the salty ocean. You will see Vaidehi, and return, your mission accomplished.
সমুদ্রং নেতুমিচ্ছামি ভবদ্ভির্বরুণালযম্৷

প্রদাস্যাম্যুদকং ভ্রাতুস্স্বর্গতস্য মহাত্মনঃ৷৷4.58.35৷৷


ভবদ্ভিঃ by you, বরুণালযম্ abode of Varuna, সমুদ্রম্ ocean, নেতুম্ to lead, ইচ্ছামি I intend, স্বর্গতস্য for him who is in heaven, মহাত্মনঃ of the great soul, ভ্রাতুঃ to my brother, উদকম্ oblation, প্রদাস্যামি I will offer.

'Take me to the ocean, the abode of Varuna. I intend to offer oblation to my brother, a great soul who is in heaven.'
ততো নীত্বা তু তং দেশং তীরং নদনদীপতেঃ৷

নির্দগ্ধপক্ষং সম্পাতিং বানরাস্সুমহৌজসঃ৷৷4.58.36৷৷

পুনঃ প্রত্যানযিত্বা চ তং দেশং পতগেশ্বরম্৷

বভূবুর্বানরা হৃষ্টাঃ প্রবৃত্তিমুপলভ্য তে৷৷4.58.37৷৷


সুমহৌজসঃ mightiest, বানরাঃ monkeys, নির্দগ্ধপক্ষম্ whose wings were totally burnt, সম্পাতিম্ Sampati, ততঃ then, নদনদীপতেঃ of lord of rivers, তীরং shore, তং দেশম্ that place, নীত্বা after taking, পতগেশ্বরম্ the king of vultures, পুনঃ again, প্রত্যানযিত্বা after bringing him back, বানরাঃ monkeys, প্রবৃত্তিম্ all the information, উপলভ্য having obtained, হৃষ্টাঃ pleased, তে বভূবু they were.

Th mightiest of monkeys carried Sampati, whose wings were totally burnt, to the sea shore and after he had offered oblations took him back to the same place. Having obtained all information from the king of vultures the monkeys were very happy.
