[Sampati gives his past account.]

ততঃ কৃতোদকং স্নাতং তং গৃধ্রং হরিযূথপাঃ৷

উপবিষ্টা গিরৌ রম্যে পরিবার্য সমন্ততঃ৷৷4.60.1৷৷


ততঃ then, হরিযূথপাঃ leaders among the monkeys, কৃতোদকম্ offered libations, স্নাতম্ bathed, তং গৃধ্রম্ that vulture Sampati, সমন্ততঃ all of them together, পরিবার্য surrounding him, রম্যে delightful, গিরৌ on mountain, উপবিষ্টাঃ sat down.

Sampati bathed and offered libations to Jatayu. Then all the monkeys sat round him on the beautiful mountain.
তমঙ্গদমুপাসীনং তৈস্সর্বৈর্হরিভির্বৃতম্৷

জনিতপ্রত্যযো হর্ষাত্সম্পাতিঃ পুনরব্রবীত্৷৷4.60.2৷৷


তৈঃ by those, সর্বৈঃ by all, হরিভিঃ by monkeys, বৃতম্ surrounded, উপাসীনম্ seated, তম্ অঙ্গদম্ to that Angada, জনিতপ্রত্যযঃ gained confidence, সম্পাতিঃ Sampati, হর্ষাত্ out of by, পুনঃ again, অব্রবীত্ addressed.

Angada sat near Sampati surrounded by all monkeys. Sampati who had gained confidence spoke to Angada once again joyously.
কৃত্বা নিশ্শব্দমেকাগ্রা শ্শ্রুণ্বন্তু হরযো! মম৷

তত্বং সঙ্কীর্তযিষ্যামি যথা জানামি মৈথিলীম্৷৷4.60.3৷৷


হরযঃ! O monkeys, মৈথিলীম্ princess from Mithila, যথা as, জানামি I know, তত্বম্ the truth, সঙ্কীর্তযিষ্যামি I shall describe, নিশ্শব্দম্ কৃত্বা remaining silently, একাগ্রাঃ rapt attention, মম to me, শ্রুণ্বন্তু listen.

'O monkeys! I shall tell you in detail how I came to know the princess from Mithila. Listen quietly with rapt attention:

Scorched by the rays of the Sun, I was burnt totally and fell on the peak of this mount Vindhya years ago.

ষড্রাত্রাত্ after six nights, লব্ধসংজ্ঞঃ with consciousness restored, বিবশ pale, বিহ্বলন্নিব perturbed, সর্বাঃ all, দিশঃ quarters, বীক্ষমাণঃ while looking at, কিঞ্চন even a little, নাভিজানামি I could not recognise anything.

বনানি চ প্রদেশাংশ্চ নীরীক্ষ্য মতিরাগতা৷৷4.60.6৷৷


ততঃ then, সাগরান্ the seas, শৈলান্ mountain, সর্বাঃ নদীঃ all rivers, সরাংসি চ and lakes, বনানি চ and forests, প্রদেশাংশ্চ and all locations, নীরীক্ষ্য after observing, মতিঃ mind, আগতা realised.

'Then I looked at the oceans, the mountains, rivers, lakes, forests and all locations and my memory returned gradually.

হৃষ্টপক্ষিগণাকীর্ণঃ inhabited by flocks of happy birds, কন্দরান্তরকূটবান্ filled with caves and mountains, অযম্ this, দক্ষিণস্য southern side, উদধেঃ ocean's, তীরে on the shore, বিন্ধ্য Vindhya, ইতি this is, নিশ্চিতঃ for sure.

'I came to know then that this place is inhabited by flocks of happy birds and full of many caves and mountain peaks. This is mount Vindhya on the shore of the southern ocean.
আসীচ্চাত্রাশ্রমং পুণ্যং সুরৈরপি সুপূজিতম্৷

ঋষির্নিশাকরো নাম যস্মিন্নুগ্রতপাভবত্৷৷4.60.8৷৷


অত্র there, সুরৈরপি even by Gods, সুপূজিতম্ worshipped with reverence, আশ্রমম্ hermitage, আসীত্ was situated, যস্মিন্ in it, নিশাকরো নাম called Nisakara, উগ্রতপাঃ performed rigorous penance, ঋষিঃ sage, অভবত্ lived.

'There was a hermitage nearby, where a revered sage, who was even worshpped by gods lived. His name was Nishakara. He did rigorous penance here.

বসতো মম ধর্মজ্ঞা! স্বর্গতে তু নিশাকরে৷৷4.60.9৷৷


ধর্মজ্ঞাঃ! O knowers of dharma!, নিশাকরে when Nishakara, স্বর্গতে after he reached the heaven, তেন by him, ঋষিণা বিনা devoid of sage, অস্মিন্ that, বসতঃ for me while dwelling, মম for me, অষ্টৌ eight, বর্ষসহস্রাণি thousand years.

'O righteous monkeys! after the death of sage Nishakara eight thousand years have passed. And I have been living here.
অবতীর্য তু বিন্ধ্যাগ্রাত্কৃচ্ছ্রেণ বিষমাচ্ছনৈঃ৷

তীক্ষ্ণদর্ভাং বসুমতীং দুঃখেন পুনরাগতঃ৷৷4.60.10৷৷


বিষমাত্ from the craggy rugged place, বিন্ধ্যাগ্রাত্ from the peak of Vindhya mountain, শনৈঃ slowly, কৃচ্ছ্রেণ with great difficulty, অবতীর্য having descended, তীক্ষ্ণদর্ভাম্ a place with sharp rough darbha grass, বসুমতীম্ to the land, দুঃখেন with difficulty, পুনঃ again, আগতঃ came.

'I descended down slowly from the high rugged peak of the Vindhya mountain with great difficulty to the plain land bristling with sharp, harsh darbha grass.
তমৃষিং দ্রষ্টুকামোস্মি দুঃখেনাভ্যাগতো ভৃশম্৷

জটাযুষা মযা চৈব বহুশোভিগতো হি সঃ৷৷4.60.11৷৷


ভৃশম্ intense, দুঃখেন with utmost difficulty, অভ্যাগতঃ approached, তম্ ঋষিম্ that sage, দ্রষ্টুকামঃ eager to see, অস্মি I am, সঃ he, জটাযুষা with Jatayu, মযাচৈব along with me, বহুশঃ in many ways, অভিগতো হি both visited him.

'Eager to see the great sage I reached the place with much difficulty. I and my brother Jatayu had approached him many a time earlier.
তস্যাশ্রমপদাভ্যাশে ববুর্বাতাস্সুগন্ধিনঃ৷

বৃক্ষো বাপুষ্পিতঃ কশ্চিদফলো বা ন বিদ্যতে৷৷4.60.12৷৷


তস্য of that, আশ্রমপদাভ্যাশে in the vicinity of that hermitage, সুগন্ধিনঃ fragrant, বাতাঃ breeze, ববুঃ blew, অপুষ্পিতঃ without flowers, বৃক্ষঃ trees, কশ্চিত্ any one, ন বিদ্যতে not seen, অফলো বা without fruits, ন not.

'In the vicinity of that hermitage there was no tree without flowers or fruits and fragrant was the breeze that blew around.
উপেত্য চাশ্রমং পুণ্যং বৃক্ষমূলমুপাশ্রিতঃ৷

দ্রষ্টুকামঃ প্রতীক্ষেহং ভগবন্তং নিশাকরম্৷৷4.60.13৷৷


পুণ্যম্ sacred, আশ্রমম্ hermitage, উপেত্য reaching, বৃক্ষমূলম্ under a tree, উপাশ্রিতঃ I rested, ভগবন্তম্ divine sage, নিশাকরম্ Nishakara, দ্রুষ্টুকামঃ desiring to see, প্রতীক্ষেহম্ I awaited.

'On reaching the sacred hermitage, I stood and waited under a tree for the audience of the divine sage Nishakara.
অথাপশ্যমদূরস্থমৃষিং জ্বলিততেজসম্৷

কৃতাভিষেকং দুর্ধর্ষমুপাবৃত্তমুদঙ্মুখম্৷৷4.60.14৷৷


অথ then, কৃতাভিষেকম্ after having ritual bath, উপাবৃত্তম্ returned towards, দুর্ধর্ষম্ unassailable, উদঙ্মুখম্ facing towards north, জ্বলিততেজসম্ shining with brilliance (of ascetic power), অদূরস্থম্ near by, ঋষিম্ sage, অপশ্যম্ I saw.

তমৃক্ষাস্সৃমরা ব্যাঘ্রাস্সিংহা নাগাস্সরীসৃপাঃ৷

পরিবার্যোপগচ্ছন্তি ধাতারং প্রাণিনো যথা৷৷4.60.15৷৷


প্রাণিনঃ living creatures, ধাতারং যথা like the creator, তম্ him, পরিবার্য circling around, ঋক্ষাঃ bears, সৃমরাঃ deer, ব্যাঘ্রাঃ tigers, সিংহাঃ lions, নাগাস্সরীসৃপাঃ elephants and snakes, উপগচ্ছন্তি were following.

'He was followed by bears, deer, tigers, lions, elephants and snakes just as living beings follow their creator.
ততঃ প্রাপ্তমৃষিং জ্ঞাত্বা তানি সত্ত্বানি বৈ যযুঃ৷

প্রবিষ্টে রাজনি যথা সর্বং সামাত্যকং বলম্৷৷4.60.16৷৷


রাজনি when the king, প্রবিষ্টে enters, সর্বম্ all, সামাত্যকম্ including the feudatories, বলম্ army, যথা like, ঋষিম্ that sage, প্রাপ্তম্ when he came, জ্ঞাত্বা knowing, ততঃ then, তানি all those, সত্ত্বানি creatures, যযুঃ went.

'Just as the army including feudatories recede, when the king comes, all those creatures repaired to their dens when they knew the arrival of the sage at the hermitage.
ঋষিস্তু দৃষ্ট্বা মাং প্রীতঃ প্রবিষ্টশ্চাশ্রমং পুনঃ৷

মুহূর্তমাত্রান্নিষ্ক্রম্য ততঃ কার্যমপৃচ্ছত৷৷4.60.17৷৷


ঋষিস্তু sage also, মাম্ me, দৃষ্ট্বা on seeing, প্রীতঃ pleased, আশ্রমম্ to the hermitage, প্রবিষ্টঃ entered, ততঃ then, মুহূর্তমাত্রাত্ for a moment, পুনঃ again, নিষ্ক্রম্য after coming out, কার্যম্ the task, অপৃচ্ছত enquired.

The sage who entered the hermitage came out again within a moment on seeing me and enquired about me affectionately:
সৌম্য! বৈকল্যতাং দৃষ্ট্বা রোম্ণাং তে নাবগম্যতে৷

অগ্নিদগ্ধাবিমৌ পক্ষৌ ব্রণাশ্চাপি শরীরকে৷৷4.60.18৷৷


সৌম্য! O gentle one, তে your, রোম্ণাম্ of the hair, বৈকল্যতাম্ being devoid of, দৃষ্ট্বা after seeing, নাবগম্যতে it is understood, ইমৌ these two, পক্ষৌ two wings, অগ্নিদগ্ধৌ both burnt by fire, ব্রণাশ্চাপি wounded, শরীরকে all over the body.

'O gentle one! seeing your body devoid of hair I can understood that your wings have been burnt and your body bruised.
গৃধ্রৌ দ্বৌ দৃষ্টপূর্বৌ মে মাতরিশ্বসমৌ জবে৷

গৃধ্রাণাং চৈব রাজানৌ ভ্রাতরৌ কামরূপিণৌ৷৷4.60.19৷৷


গৃধ্রাণাম্ among vultures, রাজানৌ you both are kings, জবে in speed, মাতরিশ্বসমৌ equal to
wind, কামরূপিণৌ both can change to any form at will, ভ্রাতরৌ brothers, দ্বৌ two, গৃধ্রৌ two vultures, মে for me, দৃষ্টপূর্বৌ seen earlier.

'You are the king among vultures equal to wind in speed.I had seen both the brothers earlier and both of you could change your form at will.
জ্যেষ্ঠো হি ত্বং তু সম্পাতে! জটাযুরনুজস্তব৷

মানুষং রূপমাস্থায গৃহ্ণীতাং চরণৌ মম৷৷4.60.20৷৷


সম্পাতে O Sampati, ত্বম্ you, জ্যেষ্ঠো হি the elder, জটাযু Jatayu, তব your, অনুজঃ younger brother, মানুষম্ human, রূপম্ form, আস্থায assuming, মম my, চরণৌ feet, গৃহ্ণীতাম্ touch my feet.

কিং তে ব্যাধিসমুত্থানং পক্ষযোঃ পতনং কথম্৷

দণ্ডোযংচ কৃতঃ কেন সর্বমাখ্যাহি পৃচ্ছতঃ৷৷4.60.21৷৷

'What disease has affected you? Why are your wings dropped down? Who punished you in this way? Tell me.'
