[Sampati's revelation to sage Nishakara about his burnt wings.]

ততস্তদ্দারুণং কর্ম দুষ্করং সহসাত্কৃতম্৷

আচচক্ষে মুনেস্সর্বং সূর্যানুগমনং তথা৷৷4.61.1৷৷


ততঃ then, সহসা rashly, কৃতম্ done, দুষ্করম্ impetuous, দারুণম্ arrogant, তত্ কর্ম that deed, তদা then, সূর্যানুগমনম্ following the Sun, সর্বম্ everything, মুনেঃ to the sage, আচচক্ষে I revealed.

'Then I revealed everything to the sage,including the arrogant, impetuous action of rashly following the Sun (for challenging Indra).
ভগবন্ব্রণযুক্তত্বাল্লজ্জযা ব্যাকুলেন্দ্রিযঃ৷

পরিশ্রান্তো ন শক্নোমি বচনং পরিভাষিতুম্৷৷4.61.2৷৷


ভগবন্ O revered sage!, ব্রণযুক্তত্বাত্ body being wounded, লজ্জযা চ due to shame, ব্যাকুলেন্দ্রিযঃ with senses disturbed, পরিশ্রান্তঃ exhausted, বচনম্ these words, পরিভাষিতুম্ to express, ন শক্নোমি I am not able to do.

'O revered sage! I am exhausted and my senses are depressed. I am ashamed of myself. My body is wounded. Therefore I am not able to reply.
অহং চৈব জটাযুশ্চ সঙ্ঘর্ষাদ্ধর্পমোহিতৌ৷

আকাশং পতিতৌ বীরৌ জিজ্ঞাসন্তৌ পরাক্রমম্৷৷4.61.3৷৷


অহং চৈব I also, জটাযুশ্চ Jatayu also, দর্পমোহিতৌ deluded by pride, পরাক্রমম্ valour, বীরৌ two heroes, জিজ্ঞাসন্তৌ with the intention of knowing, সঙ্ঘর্ষাত্ challenging each other, দূরাত্ from far, আকাশম্ sky, পতিতৌ we flew.

'Deluded by pride, I and my brother Jatayu challenging each other to test our relative strength flew far into the sky.
কৈলাসশিখরে বদ্ধ্বা মুনীনামগ্রতঃ পণম্৷

রবিস্স্যাদনুযাতব্যো যাবদস্তং মহাগিরিম্৷৷4.61.4৷৷


কৈলাসশিখরে on the peak of Kailasa, মুনীনাম্ of sages, অগ্রতঃ in their presence, মহাগিরিম্ great mountain, অস্তং যাবত্ till the setting, রবিঃ Sun, অনুযাতব্যঃ follow, স্যাত্ be, পণম্ bet, বদ্ধ্বা made.

'Both of us made a bet on the peak of mount Kailasa in the presence of sages to follow the Sun-god until he sets on the western mountain.
অথাবাং যুগপত্প্রাপ্তাবপশ্যাব মহীতলে৷

রথচক্রপ্রমাণানি নগরাণি পৃথক্পৃথক্৷৷4.61.5৷৷


অথ and then, আবাম্ both of us, যুগপত্ simultaneously, প্রাপ্তৌ both reaching, মহীতলে on the land, রথচক্রপ্রমাণানি the size of chariot wheels, নগরাণি cities, পৃথক্ পৃথক্ one after another, অপশ্যাব we both saw.

ক্বচিদ্বাদিত্রঘোষাংশ্চ ব্রহ্মঘোষাংশ্চ শুশ্রুবঃ৷

গাযন্তীশ্চাঙ্গনা বহ্বীঃ পশ্যাবো রক্তবাসসঃ৷৷4.61.6৷৷


ক্বচিত্ at some places, বাদিত্রঘোষাংশ্চ sounds of musical instruments, ব্রহ্মঘোষাংশ্চ sounds of Vedic chanting, শুশ্রুবঃ we heard, গাযন্তী: ladies singing, রক্তবাসস: clothed in red garments, বহ্বীঃ many, অঙ্গনাঃ women, পশ্যাবঃ we both saw.

'We heard at some places sounds of musical instruments, sounds of Vedic chanting, and many lovely young women dressed in red-singing.
তূর্ণমুত্পত্য চাকাশমাদিত্যপথমাশ্রিতৌ৷

আবামালোকযাবস্তদ্বনং শাদ্বলসন্নিভম্৷৷4.61.7৷৷


আকাশম্ sky, তূর্ণম্ quickly, উত্পত্য flying, আদিত্যপদম্ Sun's path, আশ্রিতৌ we reached, আবাম্ we both, তত্ বনম্ that forest, শাদ্বলসন্নিভম্ like a lawn of grass, আলোকযাবঃ we saw.

'We flew quickly into the sky and reached the path of the Sun and looked down at the forest which looked like a green lawn.
উপলৈরিব সঞ্ছন্না দৃশ্যতে ভূশ্শিলোচ্চযৈঃ৷

আপগাভিশ্চ সংবীতা সূত্রৈরিব বসুন্ধরা৷৷4.61.8৷৷


ভূঃ land, শিলোচ্চযৈঃ with tall mountains, উপলৈঃ with pebbles, সঞ্ছন্না ইব as though it is covered, দৃশ্যতে looked, আপগাভিঃ by rivers, বসুন্ধরা land, সূত্রৈঃ with threads, সংবীতা ইব as if entwined.

'The earth filled with lofty mountains appeared as if it is covered with pebbles. Surrounded by rivers meandering, it looked as though it was entwined with threads.
হিমবাংশ্চৈব বিন্ধ্যশ্চ মেরুশ্চ সুমহান্নগঃ৷

ভূতলে সম্প্রকাশন্তে নাগা ইব জলাশযে৷৷4.61.9৷৷


হিমবাংশ্চৈব even Himalaya , বিন্ধ্যশ্চ Vindhya mountain also, সুমহান্নগঃ towering mountains, মেরুশ্চ Mount Meru also, ভূতলে on the surface of the earth, জলাশযে in a pond, নাগা ইব like elephants, সম্প্রকাশন্তে shining.

'The mountains of the earth, Himavan and Vindhya and the great Meru looked like huge elephants in a huge pond.
তীব্রস্স্বেদশ্চ খেদশ্চ ভযং চাসীত্তদাবযোঃ৷

সমাবিশতি মোহশ্চ তমো মূর্ছা চ দারুণা৷৷4.61.10৷৷


তদা then, আবযোঃ for both of us, তীব্রঃ intense, স্বেদশ্চ sweat, খেদশ্চ pain, ভযং চ and fear, আসীত্ made its appearance, মোহঃ confusion, দারুণা terrific, মূর্ছা চ and stupor, সমাবিশতি led to.

'Much sweat, pain and fear generated in us while we went on and up. This led to terrific confusion and stupor.
ন দিগ্বিজ্ঞাযতে যাম্যা নাগ্নেযী ন চ বারুণী৷

যুগান্তে নিযতো লোকো হতো দগ্ধ ইবাগ্নিনা৷৷4.61.11৷৷


যাম্যা দিক্ southern direction, ন চ জ্ঞাযতে also was not known, আগ্নেযী south east, ন or, বারুণী west, ন or, লোকঃ world, যুগান্তে at the end of yuga, অগ্নিনা by fire of dissolution, দগ্ধঃ burnt, হত ইব consumed, নিযতঃ set by an order.

'I did not know which the southern direction was or the southeast or the west. It looked as if the world had been consumed by fire and dissolved, as if it was the end of the yuga.
মনশ্চ মে হতং ভূযস্সন্নিবর্ত্যতু সংশ্রযম্৷

যত্নেন মহতা হ্যস্মিন্পুনস্সন্ধায চক্ষুষী৷৷4.61.12৷৷

যত্নেন মহতা ভূযো ভাস্করঃ প্রতিলোকিতঃ৷

তুল্যঃ পৃথ্বীপ্রমাণেন ভাস্করঃ প্রতিভাতি নৌ৷৷4.61.13৷৷


মে my, মনঃ mind, হতম্ disturbed, চক্ষুষী eyes, সংশ্রযম্ a resort, প্রাপ্য became, মহতা with great, যত্নেন with effort, অস্মিন্ in this, মনঃ mind, চক্ষুষী both my eyes, সন্ধায by fixing, ভূযঃ again, মহতা যত্নেন with great effort, ভাস্করঃ Sun, প্রতিলোকিতঃ was seen, ভাস্করঃ Sun, পৃথ্বীপ্রমাণেন with the measurement of earth, তুল্যঃ equal, নৌ to us, প্রতিভাতি appeared.

'My mind was disturbed and I turned my attention from the object. Once again I
focused my attention (on the Sun) and could see the Sun-god with great effort. The Sun appeared to us equal in size to earth.
জটাযুর্মামনাপৃচ্ছ্য নিপপাত মহীং ততঃ৷

তং দৃষ্ট্বা তূর্ণমাকাশাদাত্মানং মুক্তবানহম্৷৷4.61.14৷৷


জটাযুঃ Jatayu, মাম্ to me, অনাপৃচ্ছ্য without taking leave, মহীম্ to the earth, নিপপাত fell down, ততঃ then, অহম্ I, তম্ him, দৃষ্ট্বা after seeing, তূর্ণম্ quickly, আত্মানম্ myself, আকাশাত্ from the sky, মুক্তবান্ came down.

'Without taking leave of me Jatayu descended down to the earth. Seeing that, I also followed him down quickly from the sky.
পক্ষাভ্যাং চ মযা গুপ্তো জটাযুর্ন প্রদহ্যতে৷

প্রমাদাত্তত্র নির্দগ্ধঃ পতন্বাযুপথাদহম্৷৷4.61.15৷৷


মযা by me, পক্ষাভ্যাম্ with wings, গুপ্তঃ protected, জটাযুঃ Jatayu, ন প্রদহ্যতে was not burnt, তত্র there, প্রমাদাত্ miserably, বাযুপথাত্ from the path of the wind, পতন্ while falling down, অহম্ I, নির্দগ্ধঃ got burnt.

'I protected Jatayu with my wings so that he was not burnt. I, however, got burnt miserably and fell down from the aerial region.
আশঙ্কে তং নিপতিতং জনস্থানে জটাযুষম্৷

অহং তু পতিতো বিন্ধ্যে দগ্ধপক্ষো জডীকৃতঃ৷৷4.61.16৷৷


তং জটাযুষম্ that Jatayu, জনস্থানে at Janasthana, নিপতিতম্ fell down, আশঙ্কে I guess, অহং তু but I, দগ্ধপক্ষঃ with burnt wings, জডীকৃতঃ devoid of consciousness, বিন্ধ্যে on Vindhya, পতিতঃ fell.

'I thought Jatayu had fallen down somewhere at Janasthana, but I fell on Vindhya, wings burnt, in an unconscious state.
রাজ্যেন হীনো ভ্রাত্রা চ পক্ষাভ্যাং বিক্রমেণ চ৷

সর্বথা মর্তুমেবেচ্ছন্পতিষ্যে শিখরাদ্গীরেঃ৷৷4.61.17৷৷


রাজ্যেন with kingdom, ভ্রত্রা চ and brother also, পক্ষাভ্যাম্ my wings, বিক্রমেণ চ and my strength, হীনঃ devoid, সর্বথা by all means, মর্তুমেব to die, ইচ্ছন্ while desiring, গিরেঃ from the mountain, শিখরাত্ from the peak, পতিষ্যে I shall fall down.

'Bereft of my kingdom, my brother and my wings, and having lost my strength I desire to fall down from the mountain top and die.'
