বালী নাম মম ভ্রাতা জ্যেষ্ঠশ্শত্রুনিষূদনঃ৷

পিতুর্বহুমতো নিত্যং মমাপি চ তথা পুরা4.9.1৷৷


শত্রুনিষূদনঃ an exterminater of enemies, বালী নাম called Vali , মম my, জ্যেষ্ঠঃ ভ্রাতা elder brother, নিত্যম্ always, পিতুঃ father, বহুমতঃ very highly regarded, পুরা earlier, মম চাপি even me also, তথা that way.

'My elder brother called Vali, capable of exterminating enemies was always highly regarded by my father and me.

অহং সর্বেষু কালেষু প্রণতঃ প্রেষ্যবত্ স্থিতঃ4.9.3৷৷


অহম্ I, মহত্ great, পিতৃপৈতামহম্ inherited from ancestors, রাজ্যম্ kingdom, প্রশাসতঃ while he was ruling, তস্য his, সর্বেষু কালেষু at all times, প্রেষ্যবত্ like a servant, প্রণতঃ an obedient one, স্থিতঃ remained.

'I served him obediently like a servant while he ruled over the great ancestral kingdom inherited by him.
মাযাবী নাম তেজস্বী পূর্বজো দুন্দুভেঃ সুতঃ৷

তেন তস্য মহদ্বৈরং স্ত্রীকৃতং বিশ্শ্রুতং পুরা4.9.4৷৷


দুন্দভেঃ Dundubhi's, পূর্বজঃ elder, সুতঃ son, মাযাবী Mayavi, তেজস্বী a mighty one, পুরা in the past, তস্য বিশ্শ্রুতং well-known about him, তেন by him, স্ত্রীকৃতম্ for the sake of a woman, মহত্ bitter, বৈরম্ enmity.

'Dundubhi's eldest son Mayabi was a mighty demon. He developed bitter enmity with Vali for the sake of a woman.

রাত্রৌ at night, জনে people, সুপ্তে were asleep, সঃ he, কিষ্কিন্ধাদ্বারম্ entrance of Kishkindha, আগতঃ came, সুসংরব্ধঃ an agitated one, নর্দতি স্ম bellowing, বালিনম্ Vali, রণে for war, আহ্বযত্ challenging.

'One midnight when all were asleep, he (Mayabi) came to the entrance of Kishkinda screaming angrily and bellowing at Vali, challenging him to a duel.
প্রসুপ্তস্তু মম ভ্রাতা নর্দিতং ভৈরবস্বনম্৷

শ্রুত্বা ন মমৃষে বালী নিষ্পপাত জবাত্তদা4.9.6৷৷


তদা then, প্রসুপ্ত was sleeping, মম ভ্রাতা my brother, বালী Vali, নর্দতঃ shouting, ভৈরবস্বনম্ frightful sound, শ্রুত্বা after hearing, ন মমৃষে did not tolerate, জবাত্ hastily, নিষ্পপাত jumped out.

' My brother Vali, who was asleep could not tolerate the frightful sound and jumped
out of bed hastily.
স তু বৈ নিস্সৃতঃ ক্রোধাত্তং হন্তুমসুরোত্তমম্৷

বার্যমাণস্তত স্ত্রীভির্মযা চ প্রণতাত্মনা4.9.7৷৷


ততঃ then, সঃ he, স্ত্রীভিঃ by women, প্রণতাত্মনা by an obedient one, মযা চ and by me too, নিবার্যমাণঃ was prevented, তম্ him, অসুরোত্তমম্ powerful demon, হন্তুম্ to kill, ক্রোধাত্ angrily, নিঃসৃতঃ came out.

'Enraged, he came out to kill the powerful demon even though I with the women-folk (of the harem) tried to prevent him.
স তু নির্ধূয তাঃ সর্বা নির্জগাম মহাবলঃ৷

ততোহমপি সৌহার্দান্নিস্সৃতো বালিনা সহ4.9.8৷৷


মহাবলঃ powerful, স তু he too, তাঃ সর্বাঃ all the women, নির্ধূয pushing aside, নির্জগাম went, ততঃ then, অহমপি I too, সৌহার্দাত্ out of love, বালিনা সহ accompanied Vali, নিঃসৃতঃ came out (to support him).

'That mighty warrior(Vali) came out, pushing aside all the women-folk. I too followed him due to my affection towards him.
স তু মে ভ্রাতরং দৃষ্ট্বা মাং চ দূরাদবস্থিতম্৷

অসুরো জাতসন্ত্রাসঃ প্রদুদ্রাব ততো ভৃশম্4.9.9৷৷


সঃ he, অসুরঃ তু demon also, মে ভ্রাতরম্ my brother, দূরাত্ from a distance, অবস্থিতম্ took my stand, মাং চ and us, দৃষ্ট্বা after seeing, তদা then, ভৃশম্ very much, জাতসন্ত্রাসঃ felt scared, প্রদুদ্রাব ran

'On seeing my brother and me from a distance, the demon took to his heels -scared.
তস্মিন্ দ্রবতি সন্ত্রস্তে হ্যাবাং দ্রুততরং গতৌ৷

প্রকাশশ্চ কৃতো মার্গশ্চন্দ্রেণোদ্গচ্ছতা তদা4.9.10৷৷


সন্ত্রস্তে when frightened, তস্মিন্ him, দ্রবতি while running, আবাম্ we also, দ্রুততরম্ faster, গতৌ both went, তদা then, উদ্গচ্ছতা while rising, চন্দ্রেণ by the Moon, মার্গঃ the path, প্রকাশশ্চ was well-lit, কৃতঃ made.

'Frightened, he ran. We too chased him running faster. As the Moon was rising the path was well-lit.
স তৃণৈরাবৃতং দুর্গং ধরণ্যা বিবরং মহত্৷

প্রবিবেশাসুরো বেগাদাবামাসাদ্য বিষ্ঠিতৌ4.9.11৷৷


সঃ অসুরঃ that demon, ধরণ্যাঃ on earth, দুর্গম্ difficult passage, তৃণৈঃ by heaps of grass, আবৃতম্ covered, মহত্ great, বিবরম্ a hole, প্রবিবেশ entered, আবাম্ both of us, আসাদ্য reaching, বিষ্ঠিতৌ we took position

'The demon entered into a hole (cave) covered with a heap of grass, difficult, therefore, of access. Both of us reached there and took position.
তং প্রবিষ্টং রিপুং দৃষ্ট্বা বিলং রোষবশং গতঃ৷

মামুবাচ তদা বালী বচনং ক্ষুভিতেন্দ্রিযঃ4.9.12৷৷


তদা then, বিলম্ hole, প্রবিষ্টম্ entered, তং রিপুম্ that enemy, দৃষ্ট্বা seeing, বালী Vali, রোষবশম্ angry, গতঃ went, ক্ষুভিতেন্দ্রিযঃ senses stirred, মাম্ to me, উবাচ said.

'Seeing the enemy entering the cave, Vali became wrathful and his senses were terribly disturbed.He said to me:
ইহ ত্বং তিষ্ঠ সুগ্রীব বিলদ্বারি সমাহিতঃ৷

যাবত্তত্র প্রবিশ্যাহং নিহন্মি সহসা রিপুম্4.9.13৷৷


সুগ্রীব O Sugriva!, অহম্ I, তত্র there, প্রবিশ্য after entering, সহসা at once, রিপুম্ the enemy, যাবত্ নিহন্মি till I kill, সমাহিতঃ being alert, অদ্য now, ইহ here, বিলদ্বারি at the hole, তিষ্ঠ you wait, ত্বম্ yourself.

'O Sugriva! wait here at the entrance of the cave and be on your alert until I enter this hole and kill the enemy'.
মযা ত্বেতদ্বচশ্শ্রুত্বা যাচিতস্স পরন্তপঃ৷

শাপযিত্বা তু মাং পদ্ভ্যাং প্রবিবেশ বিলং মহত্4.9.14৷৷


এতত্ this, বচঃ words, শ্রুত্বা after hearing, মযা me, যাচিতঃ begged, পরন্তপঃ scorcher of enemies, সঃ he, মাম্ me, পদ্ভ্যাম্ on his feet, শাপযিত্বা made me swear, মহত্ great, বিলম্ cave, প্রবিবেশ entered.

'On hearing him, I begged the scorcher of enemies (Vali) that I would follow him, but he made me swear on his feet and entered the cave.
তস্য প্রবিষ্টস্য বিলং সাগ্রস্সংবত্সরো গতঃ৷

স্থিতস্য মম বিলদ্বারি স কালো ব্যত্যবর্তত4.9.15৷৷


বিলম্ cave, প্রবিষ্টস্য him who entered, তস্য for him, সাগ্রঃ well over, সংবত্সরজ্ঞ a year, গতঃ had passed, বিলদ্বারি at the entrance of the cave, স্থিতস্য was waiting, সঃ কালঃ all that year, ব্যত্যবর্তত passed by.

অহং তু নষ্টং জ্ঞাত্বা তং স্নেহাদাগতসম্ভ্রমঃ৷

ভ্রাতরং ন চ পশ্যামি পাপাশঙ্কি চ মে মনঃ4.9.16৷৷


অহং তু I also, তম্ him, নষ্টম্ dead, জ্ঞাত্বা after knowing, স্নেহাত্ due to love, আগত সংভ্রমঃ
became agitated, ভ্রাতরম্ brother, ন পশ্যামি I have not seen, মে my, মনঃ mind, পাপাশঙ্কি চ suspected.

'Thinking him dead, I became agitated because of my love for him. My mind began to apprehend his death since I had not seen my brother for long.
অথ দীর্ঘস্য কালস্য বিলাত্তস্মাদ্বিনিস্সৃতম্৷

সফেনং রুধিরং রক্তমহং দৃষ্ট্বা সুদুঃখিতঃ৷৷4.9.17৷৷


অথ then, দীর্ঘস্য কালস্য after a long time, তস্মাত্ from that, বিলাত্ from the cave, বিনিঃসৃতম্ flowing down, সফেনম্ along with foam, রুধিরম্ blood, দৃষ্ট্বা after seeing, ততঃ then, অহম্ I, ভৃশদুঃখিতঃ became very sad.

নর্দতামসুরাণাং চ ধ্বনির্মে শ্রোত্রমাগতঃ৷

নিরস্তস্য চ সঙ্গ্রামে ক্রোশতোনিস্স্বনো গুরোঃ4.9.18৷৷


নর্দতাম্ roaring voices, অসুরাণাম্ of the demon, ধ্বনিঃ sound, মে to me, শ্রোত্রম্ to the ear, আগতঃ came to, সঙ্গ্রামে in war, রতস্ত engaged, ক্রোশতো বাপি or not of a shouting, গুরোঃ of my brother, নিস্স্বনঃ voice.

'I heard the roaring voices of the demons and not the yelling of my brother engaged in the duel.
অহং ত্ববগতো বুদ্ধ্যা চিহ্নৈস্তৈর্ভ্রাতরং হতম্৷

পিধায চ বিলদ্বারং শিলযা গিরিমাত্রযা4.9.19৷৷

শোকার্তশ্চোদকং কৃত্বা কিষ্কিন্ধামাগতস্সখে৷

গূহমানস্য মে তত্ত্বং যত্নতো মন্ত্রিভিশ্শ্রুতম্4.9.20৷৷


সখে O friend!, অহং তু I also, তৈঃ by those, চিহ্নৈঃ by the signs, ভ্রাতরম্ my brother, হতম্ killed, বুদ্ধ্যা with my understanding, অবগতঃ came to know, গিরিমাত্রযা of the size of a mountain, শিলযা with a rock, বিলদ্বারম্ the entrance of the mountain, পিধায blocking, চ and, শোকার্তঃ immersed in sorrow, উদকং কৃত্বা offering oblations, কিষ্কিন্ধাম্ to Kishkindha, আগতঃ came, মে me, গূহমানস্য intending to hide the fact, মন্ত্রিভিঃ by the ministers, তত্ত্বম্ truth, যত্নতঃ efforts, শ্রুতম্ heard.

'O friend! by those signs I understood that my brother was killed and concluding that way I blocked the entrance of the cave with a rock of the size of a mountain and offered oblations to my brother and came to Kishkinda. I intended to hide the fact of Vali's death. But the ministers came to know the truth with their efforts.
ততোহং তৈস্সমাগম্য সম্মতৈরভিষেচিতঃ৷

রাজ্যং প্রশাসতস্তস্য ন্যাযতো মম রাঘব!4.9.21৷৷

আজগাম রিপুং হত্বা বালী তমসুরোত্তমম্৷৷


ততঃ then, সমেতৈঃ by those coming together, তৈঃ by them, সমাগম্য having assembled, অহম্ I, অভিষেচিতঃ I was consecrated, রাঘব O Rama!, তস্য মম to me (in such a condition), রাজ্যম্ kingdom, ন্যাযতঃ lawfully, প্রশাসতঃ while I was ruling, সঃ বানরঃ that monkey, রিপুম্ enemy, দানবম্ demon, হত্বা after killing, আজগাম came back.

'Then all the ministers assembled together and consecrated me. While I was ruling the kingdom lawfully, Vali, the monkey came back after killing the enemy demon.
অভিষিক্তং তু মাং দৃষ্ট্বা বালী সংরক্তলোচনঃ৷

মদীযান্মন্ত্রিণো বদ্ধ্বা পরুষং বাক্যমব্রবীত্4.9.22৷৷


অভিষিক্তম্ consecrated, মাম্ me, দৃষ্ট্বা on seeing, কোপাত্ angrily, সংরক্তলোচনঃ with his eyes turned red, মদীযান্ those belonging to me, মন্ত্রিণঃ at the ministers, বদ্ধ্বা after imprisoning, পরুষম্ harsh, বাক্যম্ words, অব্রবীত্ spoke.

'Seeing me on the throne, Vali became angry and his eyes turned red. He imprisoned
my ministers and spoke to me harshly.
নিগ্রহেপি সমর্থস্য তং পাপং প্রতি রাঘব৷

ন প্রাবর্তত মে বুদ্ধির্ভ্রাতুর্গৌরবযন্ত্রিতা4.9.23৷৷


রাঘব Rama, নিগ্রহে in resistance, অপি also, সমর্থস্য of a capable one, মে my, বুদ্ধি: intellect, ভ্রাতৃগৌরবযন্ত্রিতা controlled by my respect for my brother, তং পাপং প্রতি towards that sinner, ন প্রাবর্তত did not advance.

'O Rama! even though I was capable of restraining the sinner, my intellect did not let me do so out of respect for my brother.
হত্বা শত্রুং স মে ভ্রাতা প্রবিবেশ পুরং তদা4.9.24৷৷

মানযংস্তং মহাত্মানং যথাবচ্চাভ্যবাদযম্৷

উক্তাশ্চ নাশিষস্তেন সন্তুষ্টেনান্তরাত্মনা4.9.25৷৷


মে ভ্রাতা my brother, সঃ he, শত্রুম্ enemy, হত্বা after killing, তদা then, পুরম্ town, প্রবিবেশ he entered, মহাত্মানম্ great man, তম্ him, মানযন্ while I respected, যথাবত্ as usual, অভ্যবাদযম্ I offered salutations, তেন by him, সন্তুষ্টেন gladly, অন্তরাত্মনা wholeheartedly, আশিষঃ blessings, নোক্তাঃ were not pronounced.

'When my brother came back to the town after killing the enemy, I offered as usual my salutations to him. But he did not bless me wholeheartedly.
নত্বা পাদাবহং তস্য মকুটেনাস্পৃশং প্রভো

অপি বালী মম ক্রোধান্ন প্রসাদং চকার সঃ4.9.26৷৷


প্রভো O Lord, অহম্ I, নত্বা bowing, তস্য পাদৌ at his feet, মকুটেন with my crown, অস্পৃশম্ I touched, অপি even then, সঃ বালী that Vali, ক্রোধাত্ angrily, মম my, প্রসাদম্ pleasure, ন চকার not accepted.

'O lord! I bowed at his feet with my crown in total submission. Even then Vali was not pleased a bit.
ইত্যার্ষে শ্রীমদ্রামাযণে বাল্মীকীয আদিকাব্যে কিষ্কিন্ধাকাণ্ডে নবমস্সর্গঃ৷৷
