[Vali repents -- asks Sugriva to take care of Angada and Tara -- hands over his golden necklace to Sugriva -- exhorts Angada.]

वीक्षमाणस्तु मन्दासुस्सर्वतो मन्दमुच्छ्वसन्।

आदावेव तु सुग्रीवं ददर्शत्वात्मजाग्रतः4.22.1।।


मन्दासुः slowly, मन्दं feebly, उच्छ्वसन् sighing, सर्वतः all over, वीक्षमाणः तु gazing all round, आदावेव at first instance, अग्रतः front, आत्मजः his own son, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, ददर्श saw.

Vali, gazing all around, breathing slowly and sighing feably beheld Sugriva at first instance, Sugriva who was standing in front of his own son.
तं प्राप्तविजयं वाली सुग्रीवं प्लवगेश्वरः।

आभाष्य व्यक्तया वाचा सस्नेहमिदमब्रवीत्4.22.2।।


प्लवगेश्वरः lord of monkeys, वाली Vali, प्राप्तविजयम् had won a victory, तं सुग्रीवम् to that Sugriva, आभाष्य spoke, व्यक्तया addressing, वाचा words, सस्नेहम् with love, इदम् this, अब्रवीत् said.

Vali, the lord of monkeys, lovingly said to Sugriva, who had won a victory:
सुग्रीव दोषेण न मां गन्तुमर्हसि किल्बिषात्।

कृष्यमाणं भविष्येण बुद्धिमोहेन मां बलात्4.22.3।।


सुग्रीव O Sugriva, माम् me, दोषेण by mistake, गन्तुम् exiling, न अर्हसि ought not to, किल्बिषात् due to mistake, भविष्येण in future, बुद्धिमोहेन by deluded, बलात् by force माम् me, कृष्यमाणम् bound

'O Sugriva you ought not to accuse me of exiling you, and wresting your wife. My
mind was deluded by the force of fate that controls one's future.
युगपद्विहितं तात न मन्ये सुखमावयोः।

सौहार्द भ्रातृयुक्तं हि तदिदं तात नान्यथा4.22.4।।


तात O dear, आवयोः for both of us, सुखम् happiness, युगपत् at the same time, न मन्ये I also do not believe, भ्रातृयुक्तम् not right for brothers, तत् so, इदम् this, सौहार्दम् friendship between us, न अन्यथा not otherwise, जातम् is created.

'O dear I believe that both of us are not destined to enjoy the love and happiness that come together to brothers.
प्रतिपद्य त्वमद्यैव राज्यमेषां वनौकसाम्।

मामप्यद्यैव गच्छन्तं विद्धि वैवस्वतक्षयम्4.22.5।।


त्वम् you, अद्यैव just now, एषाम् of these, वनौकसाम् forest dwellers, राज्यम् kingdom, प्रतिपद्य accept, मामपि me also, अद्यैव now, वैवस्वतक्षयम् the abode of Vivasvan, lord of the death, गच्छन्तम् going, विद्धि know.

जीवितं च हि राज्यं च श्रियं च विपुलामिमाम्।

प्रजहाम्येष वै तूर्णं महच्चागर्हितं यशः4.22.6।।


एषः अहम् thus I, जीवितं च life also, राज्यं च even kingdom, इमाम् this, विपुलाम् vast, श्रियं च and prosperity, अगर्हितम् untarnished, यशः च and fame, तूर्णम् soon, एषः here I am, प्रजहामि leaving.

'I am leaving this world soon, along with this vast kingdom, prosperity and untarnished fame.
अस्यां त्वहमवस्थायां वीर वक्ष्यामि यद्वचः।

यद्यप्यसुकरं राजन्कर्तुमेव तदर्हसि4.22.7


वीर O warrior, राजन् O king, अस्यां अवस्थायाम् at this stage, अहम् I, यत् those, वचः words, वक्ष्यामि speaking, असुकरं not easy to do, यद्यपि even though, कर्तुमेव only to carry out, त्वम् you, अर्हसि ought to.

'O warrior king you should do whatever I request you at this hour even though it may not be easy.
सुखार्हं सुखसंवृद्धं बालमेनमबालिशम्।

बाष्पपूर्णमुखं पश्य भूमौ पतितमङ्गदम्4.22.8।।


सुखार्हम् who deserves happiness, सुखसंवृद्धम् raised with comfort, बालम् young boy, अबालिशम् youthful, बाष्पपूर्णमुखम् tearful face, भूमौ on the ground, पतितम् fallen down, अङ्गदम् Angada, पश्य see.

'Look at this young Angada fallen on the ground, face flooded with tears. Raised with comfort, he deserves to be kept happy.
मम प्राणैः प्रियतरं पुत्रं पुत्रमिवौरसम्।

मया हीनमहीनार्थं पर्वतः परिपालय4.22.9।।


मम my, प्राणैः more than life, प्रियतरम् dearer to me, मया by me, हीनम् separated, पुत्रम् son, औरसं पुत्रं इव like your own son, सर्वतः in all respects, अहीनार्थम् without being deprived of anything, परिपालय take care of him.

'He is dearer to me than my life. Take care of him like your own son. He is separated from me. Take care of him in all respects, so that he is not deprived of anything.
त्वमेवास्य हि दाता च परित्राता च सर्वशः।

भयेष्वभयदश्चैव यथाऽहं प्लवगेश्वर।।4.22.10।।


प्लवगेश्वर O lord of monkeys, अहम् I, यथा as I am, त्वमेव you alone, अस्य his, (पिता father), दाता provider, सर्वशः of everything, परित्राता च and saviour, भयेषु in danger, अभयदश्चैव protector.

'O lord of monkeys from now on, you alone will be his father, provider of everything, saviour and protector in danger.
एष तारात्मज श्रीमांस्त्वया तुल्यपराक्रमः।

रक्षसां च वधे तेषामग्रतस्ते भविष्यति4.22.11।।


श्रीमान् prosperous, त्वया to you, तुल्यपराक्रमः equal in valour, एषः this, तारात्मजः son of Tara, तेषाम् their, रक्षसाम् demons, वधे crush, ते to you, अग्रतः on the forefront, भविष्यति will remain.

'This prosperous son of Tara, your equal in valour, will remain with you in the forefront to crush demons.
अनुरूपाणि कर्माणि विक्रम्य बलवान्रणे।

करिष्यत्येष तारेयस्तरस्वी तरुणोऽङ्गदः4.22.12।।


बलवान् strong, तारेयः of Tara's, तरस्वी fast, तरुणः young, एषः अङ्गदः this Angada, रणे in war, विक्रम्य strike, अनुरूपाणि fitting , कर्माणि deeds, करिष्यति will do.

'This mighty hero Angada, son of Tara, is young and dynamic. He will strike (the enemy) in a fitting manner in war.
सुषेणदुहिता चेयमर्थसूक्ष्मविमनिश्चये।

औत्पातिके च विविधे सर्वतः परिनिष्ठिता4.22.13।।


सुषेणदुहिता daughter of Sushena, इयं च and she also , अर्थसूक्ष्मविनिश्चये in disecerning subtle matters, विविधे various, औत्पातिके च and in foreseeing events that come up suddenly, सर्वतःall over, परिनिष्ठिता very efficient( in crisis management),

'Tara, daughter of Sushena, is wise and efficient in discerning subtle matters and in foreseeing unexpected events.
यदेषा साध्विति ब्रूयात्कार्यं तन्मुक्तसंशयम्।

न हि तारामतं किञ्चिदन्यथा परिवर्तते4.22.14।।


एषा she, यत् whatever, साधु इति treat it to be right, ब्रूयात् speak, तत् that, मुक्तसंशयम् without any doubt, कार्यम् work, तारामतम् her opinion, किञ्चत् even a little, अन्यथा otherwise, न परिवर्तते हि does not change.

'Tara's opinion is never wrong. It does not change. Whatever she speaks is right and should be carried out without any doubt.
राघवस्य च ते कार्यं कर्तव्यमविशङ्कया।

स्यादधर्मो ह्यकरणे त्वां च हिंस्याद्विमानितः4.22.15।।


राघवस्य Rama's, कार्यं च work also, ते to you, अविशङ्कया without hesitation, कर्तव्यम् duty, अकरणे not do, अधर्मः unrighteousness, स्यात् हि will be, अमानितः disobeyed, त्वाम् you, हिंस्यात् च will hurt.

'You ought to carry out Rama's work without hesitation. If you do not, it will be unrighteous and harmful.
इमां च मालामाधत्स्व दिव्यां सुग्रीव काञ्चनीम्।

उदारा श्रीस्थिता ह्यास्यां सम्प्रजह्यान्मृते मयि4.22.16।।


सुग्रीव O Sugriva, दिव्यां divine, काञ्चनीम् golden, इमां मालाम् this necklace, अधत्स्व wear now, अस्याम् in it, स्थिता present, उदारा great, श्रीः brightness, मयि when me, मृते (when) dead,
सम्प्रजह्यात् हि it will be gone.

'O Sugriva put on this divine golden necklace. It has great brilliance. Its present lustre may be gone when I am dead.'
इत्येवमुक्तस्सुग्रीवो वालिना भ्रातृसौहृदात्।

हर्षं त्यक्त्वा पुनर्दीनो ग्रहग्रस्त इवोडुराट्4.22.17।।


वालिना by Vali, भ्रातृसौहृदात् due to brotherly affection, इत्येवम् thus, उक्तः spoken, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, हर्षम् happiness, त्यक्त्वा having given up , पुनः again, दीनः dull, ग्रहग्रस्तः eclipsed by planet Rahu, उडुराट् इव like the Moon.

Thus spoken to by Vali with brotherly affection, Sugriva gave up joy (of victory) and appeared dull like the Moon eclipsed by planet Rahu.
तद्वालिवचनाच्छान्तः कुर्वन्युक्तमतन्द्रितः।

जग्राह सोऽभ्यनुज्ञातो मालां तां चैव काञ्चनीम्4.22.18।।


सः he, तद्वालिवचनात् by the words of Vali, शान्तः became composed, अतन्द्रितः without any illfeeling, युक्तम् proper, कुर्वन् carrying out, अभ्यनुज्ञातः with the permission, काञ्चनीम् golden, तां मालाम् that necklace, जग्राह received.

On hearing Vali's words, Sugriva became composed with no illfeeling. Considering it to be proper, he received with his permission the golden necklace.
तां मालां काञ्चनीम् दत्त्वा दृष्ट्वाचैवात्मजं स्थितम्।

संसिद्धः प्रेत्यभावाय स्नेहादङ्गदमब्रवीत्4.22.19।।


काञ्चनीम् golden, तां मालाम् that necklace, दत्त्वा having given, स्थितम् him who stood by, आत्मजं च and son, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, प्रेत्यभावाय with a feeling of preparedness for death, संसिद्धः ready to depart, स्नेहात् with affection, अङ्गदम् to Angada, अब्रवीत् said.

Having given the golden necklace to Sugriva,Vali, feeling ready to depart, looked at his son Angada who stood by and spoke affectionately:
देशकालौ भजस्वाद्य क्षममाणः प्रियाप्रिये।

सुखदुःख सह: काले सुग्रीववशगो भव4.22.20।।


अद्य now, प्रियाप्रिये dear or otherwise, क्षममाणः forgiving, देशकालौ regard to time and place, भजस्व serve, काले in time, सुखदुःखसहः enduring pleasure and pain equally, सुग्रीववशगः भव submit to Sugriva's will.

'Enduring pleasure or pain equally with due regard to time and place favourable to you or otherwise, you should submit to the will of Sugriva.
यथा हि त्वं महाबाहो लालितस्सततं मया।

न तथा वर्तमानं त्वां सुग्रीवो बहुमंस्यते।।4.22.21।।


महाबाहो O longarmed one, त्वम् you, सततम् always, मया by me, यथा as, लालितः affectionately, तथा in that way, वर्तमानम् as in the present, त्वाम् to you, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, न बहुमंस्यते not bring you up.

'O longarmed one you have always been affectionately brought up by me. Sugriva may not rear you that way.
माऽस्यामित्रैर्गतं गच्छेर्मा शत्रुभिररिन्दम।

भर्तुरर्थपरो दान्तः सुग्रीववशगो भव4.22.22।।


अरिन्दम O conqueror of enemies, अस्य his, अमित्रैः friends his enemies, गतम् in the past , मा गच्छेः after my exit, शत्रुभिः with his enemies too, मा do not, भर्तुः protector's, अर्थपरः devoted to his interests, दान्तः selfrestrained, सुग्रीववशगः stand by Sugriva, भव you.

'O conqueror of foes do not align with his enemies or with the friends of his enemies. Remain selfrestrained and loyal to Sugriva. Be subordinate to his will.
न चातिप्रणयः कार्यः कर्तव्योऽप्रणयश्च ते।

उभयं हि महान्दोष स्तस्मादन्तरदृग्भव4.22.23।।


अतिप्रणयः excessively friendly, ते by you, न कार्यः should not be, अप्रणयश्च lack of love also, न कर्तव्यः not to be, उभयम् both, महान्दोषम् will amount to serious mistake, तस्मात् therefore, अन्तरदृक् insightful, भव be.

'You are not to be excessively friendly or otherise as both are serious mistakes. Therefore, be insightful.'
इत्युक्त्वाऽथ विवृत्ताक्षः शरसम्पीडितो भृशम्।

विवृतैर्दशनै र्भीमैर्बभूवोत्क्रान्तजीवितः4.22.24।।


भृशम् intensely, शरसम्पीडितः formented by the arrow, इति thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, अथ then, विवृत्ताक्षः popping out his eyes, विवृतैः with opened, भीमैः with dreadful, दशनैः with teeth, उत्क्रान्तजीवितः dead, बभूव remained.

Having spoken this, tormented by the arrow, eyes popping out and his dreadful teeth ejected, Vali remained drained of life.
ततो विचुक्रुशुस्तत्र वानरा हरियूथपाः।

परिदेवयमानास्ते सर्वे प्लवगपुङ्गवा:4.22.25।।


ततः then, प्लवगपुङ्गवा: best of the monkeys, सर्वे all, ते वानराः the monkeys, हरियूथपाः leaders of monkey troops, परिदेवयमानाः bewailing, तत्र there, विचुक्रुशुः cried bitterly.

Then the best of the monkeys and their troop leaders bewailed the death of Vali, crying bitterly.
किष्किन्धा ह्यद्य शून्याऽसीत्स्वर्गते वानराधिपे।

उद्यानानि च शून्यानि पर्वताः काननानि च4.22.26।।

हते प्लवगशार्दूले निष्प्रभा वानराः कृताः।


वानराधिपे when the lord of monkeys, स्वर्गते had gone to heaven, किष्किन्धा Kishkinda, शून्या हि is desolate, उद्यानानि च pleasure gardens, शून्यानि empty, पर्वताः mountains, काननानि च forests also, प्लवगशार्दूले tigers among monkeys, हते is killed, वानराः monkeys, निष्प्रभाः dull, कृताः became.

Lord of monkeys having gone to heaven, Kishkinda looked desolate including the pleasure gardens, the mountains and forests. The monkeys also became dull.
यस्य वेगेन महता काननानि वनानि च।

पुष्पौघेणानुबध्यन्ते करिष्यति तदद्य कः4.22.27।।


यस्य whose, महता वेगेन at high speed, काननानि forests, वनानि च and gardens, पुष्पौघेण with heavy flow of flowers, अनुबध्यन्ते joined now, तत् that, अद्य now, कः who, करिष्यति can do?

(The vanaras wailed aloud saying) 'The forests and gardens looked connected together with the flowers that swayed by his speed .Who can do that now?
येन दत्तं महद्युद्धं गन्धर्वस्य महात्मनः4.22.28।।

गोलभस्य महाबाहोर्दशवर्षाणि पञ्च च।

नैव रात्रौ न दिवसे तद्युद्धमुपशाम्यति4.22.29।।


येन by him, महात्मनः of the great self, महाबाहोः of strong shoulders, गोलभस्य of Golabha, गन्धर्वस्य of gandharva, दश ten, पञ्च five, च and, वर्षाणि years, महत् great, युद्धम् war, दत्तम् given, तत् युद्धम् that war, रात्रौ during night, नैव उपशाम्यति not stops, दिवसे during day, न not.

'Great soul, Vali endowed with stout shoulders joined a duel with a gandharva called Golabha for fifteen years nonstop night and day.
ततस्तु षोडशे वर्षे गोलभो विनिपातितः।

हत्वा तं दुर्विनीतं तु वाली दंष्ट्राकरालवान्4.22.30।।

सर्वाऽभयङ्करोऽस्माकं कथमेष निपातितः।


ततः then, षोडशे in the sixteenth, वर्षे year, गोलभः Golabha, विनिपातितः was thrown down, दंष्ट्राकरालवान् of dreadful teeth, वाली Vali, दुर्विनीतम् the uncontrollable, तम् him, हत्वा on killing, अस्माकम् to us, सर्वाऽभयङ्करः rendering security, एषः such, कथम् how, निपातितः killed.

'In the sixteenth year Golabha, the uncontrollable enemy was killed by Vali with his dreadful fangs and rendered protection to everybody. How did he get killed?'
हते तु वीरे प्लवगाधिपे तदा

प्लवङ्गमास्तत्र न शर्म लेभिरे।

वनेचराः सिंहयुते महावने

यथा हि गावो निहते गवां पतौ4.22.31।।


सिंहयुते in a place full of lions, महावने in a huge forest, गवाम् of cattle, पतौ the lord, निहते when killed, वनेचराः wanderers of the forest, गावः cows, यथा as, तदा then, वीरे when the hero, प्लवगाधिपे chief of monkeys, हते when killed, तत्र there, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, शर्म peace of mind, न लेभिरे not get.

Just as the cattle get frightened when the leader of the herd gets killed in a huge forest full of lions, the young monkey became puzzled when the chief of monkeys got killed.
ततस्तु तारा व्यसनार्णवाप्लुता

मृतस्य भर्तुर्वदनं समीक्ष्य सा।

जगाम भूमिं परिरभ्य वालिनं

महाद्रुमं छिन्नमिवाश्रिता लता4.22.32।।


ततः then, सा तारा that Tara, व्यसनार्णवाप्लुता immersed in the sea of calamity, मृतस्य of the dead, भर्तुः husband's, वदनम् face, समीक्ष्य seeing, छिन्नम् cut, महाद्रुमम् massive tree, आश्रिता clinging, लता इव like a creeper clinging, वालिनम् Vali, परिरभ्य having embraced him, भूमिम् on the ground, जगाम fell.

Then Tara, immersed in a sea of sorrow, looked at the face of her dead husband and sank, embracing Vali, like a creeper clinging to the massive tree when the tree is cut down.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे द्वाविंशस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the twentysecond sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
