[Rama and Lakshmana reach Prasravana mountain -- description of the mountain cave where Rama and Lakshmana dwelt]

अभिषिक्ते तु सुग्रीवे प्रविष्टे वानरे गुहाम्।

आजगाम सह भ्रात्रा रामः प्रस्रवणं गिरिम्4.27.1।।


अभिषिक्ते after consecration, वानरे the money, सुग्रीवे Sugriva, गुहाम् cave, प्रविष्टे entered, रामः Rama, भ्रात्रा सह accompanied by his brother, प्रस्रवणं गिरिम् Prasravana mountain, आजगाम arrived.

After the consecration, Sugriva entered the cavecity (of Kishkinda) and Rama accompanied by his brother reached mountain Prasravana.
शार्दूलमृगसङ्घुष्टं सिंहैर्भीमरवैर्वृतम्।

नानागुल्मलतागूढं बहुपादपसङ्कुलम्4.27.2।।

ऋक्षवानरगोपुच्छैर्मार्जारैश्च निषेवितम्।

मेघराशिनिभं शैलं नित्यं शुचिजलाशयम्।।4.27.3।।


शार्दूलमृगसङ्घुष्टम् filled with sounds of tigers and deer, भीमरवैः roaring in a terrific manner, सिंहैः with lions, वृतम् surrounded with, नानागुल्मलतागूढम् covered with different kinds of shrubs and creepers, बहुपादपसङ्कुलम् full of many kinds of trees, ऋक्षवानरगोपुच्छैः bears, monkeys, and apes, मार्जारैश्च and wild cats, निषेवितम् inhabited, मेघराशिनिभम् like a huge cluster of clouds, नित्यम् always, शुचिजलाश्रमम् ponds of pure water, शैलम् mountain.

The (Prasravana) mountain reverberated with the terrific roars of tigers and deer and lions. There were several kinds of shrubs, creepers and trees.It was inhabited by bears, apes, monkeys and wild cats in large number. The mountain was like a huge cluster of clouds. The waters in the ponds were pure.
तस्य शैलस्य शिखरे महतीमायतां गुहाम्।

प्रत्यगृह्णत वासार्थं रामस्सौमित्रिणा सह4.27.4।।


रामः Rama, सौमित्रिणा सह with Saumitri, तस्य शैलस्य mountain's, शिखरे on the top, महतीम् great long, आयताम् wide, गुहाम् cave, वासार्थम् to reside, प्रत्यगृह्णत decided to reside.

Rama and Lakshmana decided to reside in the long, wide cave on top of the great mountain.
कृत्वा च समयं रामस्सुग्रीवेण सहानघः।

कालयुक्तं महद्वाक्यमुवाच रघुनन्दनः4.27.5।।

विनीतं भ्रातरं भ्राता लक्ष्मणं लक्ष्मिवर्धनम्।


अनघः sinless, रघुनन्दनः delight of the Raghu family, भ्राता brother, रामः Rama, सुग्रीवेण सह समयम् an agreement with Sugriva, कृत्वा after making, विनीतम् him who was obedient, भ्रातरम् to brother, लक्ष्मिवर्धनम् enhancer of glory, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, कालयुक्तम् appropriate for the time, महत् meaningful, वाक्यम् word, उवाच expressed.

Sinless Rama, the delight of the Raghus made an agreement with Sugriva and then spoke appropriately to Lakshmana, his obedient brother and enhancer of glory:
इयं गिरिगुहा रम्या विशाला युक्तमारुता।

अस्यां वत्स्याम सौमित्रे वर्षरात्रमरिन्दम4.27.6।।


अरिन्दम O subduer of enemies, सौमित्रे O Saumitri, रम्या beautiful, इयम् this, गिरिगुहा mountain cave, विशाला spacious, युक्तमारुता breezy, वर्षरात्रम् rainy nights, अस्याम् in this, वत्स्याम will reside.

'O Saumitri, subduer of enemies this beautiful mountain cave is spacious and adequately ventilated. We will reside here in the rainy season.
गिरिशृङ्गमिदं रम्यमुन्नतं पार्थिवात्मज4.27.7।।

श्वेताभिः कृष्णताम्राभिश्शिलाभिरुपशोभितम्।

नानाधातुसमाकीर्णं दरीनिर्झरशोभितम्4.27.8।।

विविधैर्वृक्षषण्डैश्च चारुचित्रलतायुतम्।

नानाविहगसङ्घुष्टं मयूररवनादितम्4.27.9।।

मालतीकुन्दगुल्मैश्च सिन्धुवारैश्शिरीषकैः।

कदम्बार्जुनसर्जैश्च पुष्पितैरुपशोभितम्4.27.10।।


पार्थिवात्मज O prince, श्वेताभिः with white, कृष्णताम्राभिः with black and red, शिलाभिः with stones, उपशोभितम् is very enchanting, नाना धातुसमाकीर्णम् with different kinds of minerals scattered all over, दरीनिर्झरशोभितम् having fascinating caves and waterfalls, विविधैः with different, वृक्षषण्डैश्च with clusters of trees, चारुचित्रलतायुतम् with fascinating vines, नानाविहगसङ्घुष्टम् crowded with different birds, मयूरवरनादितम् with sounds of peacocks, मालतीकुन्दगुल्मैश्च with bushes of delicate Jasmine and kunda, सिन्धुवारैः sindhuvara flower plants, शिरीषकै: sireeshaka trees, पुष्पितैः in bloom, सर्जैश्च and with sarja trees, उपशोभितम् very delighting, उत्तमम् best, इदम् this, गिरिशृङ्गम् this peak of mountain, उन्नतम् is lofty.

'O prince this lovely mountain peak is lofty. It has white, black and red stones with many kinds of minerals scattered all over. It is delightful with caves and streams, and various clusters of trees and variegated vines. The chirps of several kinds of birds as well as the sounds of excellent peacocks are heard here. This place is delightful with bushes of jasmine, kunda and sindhuvara, sireeshaka, kadamba, arjuna and sarja in bloom.
इयं च नलिनी रम्या फ़ुल्लपङ्कजमण्डिता।

नातिदूरे गुहायानौ भविष्यति नृपात्मज4.27.11।।


नृपात्मज son of a king, फ़ुल्लपङ्कजमण्डिता adorned with lotuses in full bloom, रम्या
endearing, इयं नलिनी this lotus creeper, नौ for us, गुहायाः from the cave, नातिदूरे not far from here, भविष्यति is located.

'O prince this pond with lotus creeper and lotuses in full bloom is endearing. It is located not far from the cave.
प्रागुदक्प्रवणे देशे गुहा साधु भविष्यति।

पश्चाच्चैवोन्नता सौम्य निवातेयं भविष्यति4.27.12।।


सौम्य goodnatured Lakshmana, प्रागुदक्प्रवणे descending path in the northeast, देशे of this place, गुहा cave, साधु auspicious, भविष्यति it will be, पश्चात् west side, उन्नता elevated, इयम् this, निवाता free from strong wind.

'O goodnatured Lakshmana the descending path on the northeastern side of the cave and elevation on the the west is auspicious.This place is protected from rain water and from strong wind.
गुहाद्वारे च सौमित्रे शिला समतला शुभा।

श्लक्ष्णा चैवायता चैव भिन्नाञ्जनचयोपमा4.27.13।।


सौमित्रे O Saumitri, गुहाद्वारे at the entrance of the cave, समतला even, शुभा good, श्लक्ष्णा smooth, आयताचैव large, भिन्नाञ्जनचयोपमा resembling a heap of shining collyrium, शिला a rock.

'O Lakshmana at the entrance of the cave is a rock, smooth and large, resembling a heap of shining collyrium.
गिरिशृङ्गमिदं तात पश्य चोत्तरतः शुभम्।

भिन्नाञ्जनचयाकारमम्भोधरमिवोत्थितम्4.27.14।।


तात O dear, उत्तरतः in the north, भिन्नाञ्जनचयाकारम् shaped like a heap of collyrium, उत्थितम् risen, अम्भोधरमिव like a raincloud, शुभम् auspicious, इदम् this, पश्य see, गिरिशृङ्गम्
mountain peak, इदम this.

'O dear look at the mountain peak in the north rising like a raincloud.It is auspicious. It resembles a heap of collyrium.
दक्षिणस्यामपि दिशि स्थितं श्वेतमिवापरम्।

कैलासशिखरप्रख्यं नानाधातुविभूषितम्4.27.15।।


दक्षिणस्यांदिशि in the southern direction, स्थितम् is located, श्वेतम् white, इवापरम् like another, कैलासशिखर प्रख्यम् like the tip of Kailasa mountain, नानाधातुविभूषितम् rich with various minerals.

'In the southern direction is a white rock appearing as if it is another mountain. It looks like mount Kailas and is rich with various minerals.
प्राचीनवाहिनीं चैव नदीं भृशमकर्दमाम्।

गुहायाः पूर्वतः पश्य त्रिकूटे जाह्नवीमिव4.27.16।।

चन्दनैस्तिलकैस्तालैस्तमालैरतिमुक्तकैः।

पद्मकैः सरलैश्चैव अशोकैश्चैव शोभिताम्4.27.17।।


प्राचीनवाहिनीम् flowing towards the east, भृशम् greatly, अकर्दमाम् pure, चन्दनैः with sandalwood, तिलकैः with tilaka, सालैः with sala, तमा tamala, अतिमुक्तकैः with atimuktaka (a lustrous jasmine creeper which sheds flowers profusely), पद्मकैः with Padmaka, सरलैश्चैव with sarala, अशोकैश्चैव and with asoka, शोभिताम् fascinating, त्रिकूटे at Trikuta, जाह्नवीमिव like the river Jahnavi, नदीम् river, गुहायाः from the caves, पूर्वतः to the east, पश्य see.

'Look at the river flowing towards the east. It has clean water and flows towards the east of the cave and looks like the river Jahnavi flowing on the mount Trikuta. This place looks delightful with the sandalwood, tilaka, sala, tamala, atimukta, padmaka, sarala and asoka trees.
वानीरैस्तिमिशैश्चैव वकुलैः केतकैर्धवैः।

हिन्तालैस्तिनिशैर्नीपैर्वेत्रकैः कृतमालकैः4.27.18।।

तीरजैश्शोभिता भाति नानारूपै स्ततस्ततः।

वसनाभरणोपेता प्रमदेवाभ्यलङ्कृता4.27.19।।


तीरजैः grown on the bank, नानारूपैः different kinds of, ततस्ततः here and there, वानीरैः with cane reeds, तिमिशै: timis, एव with,वकुलैः vakula,केतकैर्धवै: ketaka, हिन्तालैः hintala, तिनिशैः tinisa, नीपैः (नीपवृक्षैः) kadamba trees, वेत्रकैः cane creepers, धवैः dhavas, कृतमालकैः krutamalaka, वेतसैः betasa, शोभिता beautiful, वसनाभरणोपेता with clothes and ornaments, अभ्यलङ्कृता decorated, प्रमदेव like a woman, भाति looks.

'See the different kinds of trees like canes timida, vakula, ketaka, hintala, tinisa, kadamba, dhava, krutamalaka, betasa grown here and there on the bank (of the river), which looks beautiful like a woman decorated with clothes and ornaments.
शतशः पक्षिसङ्घैश्च नानानादैर्विनादिता।

एकैकमनुरक्तैश्च चक्रवाकैरलङ्कृता।।4.27.20।।

पुलिनैरतिरम्यैश्च हंससारससेवितैः।

प्रहसन्तीवभात्येषा नारी सर्वविभूषिता।।4.27.21।।


शतशः in hundreds, पक्षिसङ्घैश्च with flocks of birds, नानानादैर्विनादिता resounded with different melodies, एकैकम् each one, अनुरक्तैश्च by the loving ones, चक्रवाकैः by ruddy geese, अलङ्कृता beautified, अतिरम्यैः enchanting, पुलिनैः sandy banks, हंससारससेवितैः filled with swans and watercranes, एषा this, सर्वविभूषिता decorated all over, प्रहसन्ती laughing, नारीव like a young woman, भाति shines.

'The river flocked with hundreds of birds chirping melodious notes and specially the chakravaka birds which are clinging to their mates in great love are moving in pairs.The river has lovely sandy banks filled with swans and sarasa birds. The river appears as though a young woman decked all over is laughing.
क्वचिन्नीलोत्पलैश्छन्ना भाति रक्तोत्पलैः क्वचित्।

क्वचिदाभाति शुक्लैश्च दिव्यैः कुमुदकुट्मलैः4.27.22।।


क्वचित् at one place, नीलोत्पलैः with blue lotuses, क्वचित् at another place, रक्तोत्पलैः with red lotuses, छन्ना covered, भाति splendid looking, क्वचित् at some places, शुक्लैश्च with white lotuses, दिव्यैः wonderful, कुमुदकुट्मलैः lotus buds, आभाति appears.

'The river looks wonderful with lotuses now blue, now red and now white.
पारिप्लवशतैर्जुष्टा बर्हिक्रौञ्चविनादिता।

रमणीया नदी सौम्य मुनिसङ्घैर्निषेविता4.27.23।।


पारिप्लवशतैः with hundreds of waterbirds, जुष्टा a favoured spot, बर्हिक्रौञ्चविनादिता resounding with peacocks and krauncha birds, मुनिसङ्घैर्निषेविता inhabited by many groups of sages, सौम्या placid, नदी river, रमणीया beautiful.

'This placid river water is haunted by waterbirds, peacocks and kraunchas, It is inhabited by groups of sages.
पश्य चन्दनवृक्षाणां पङ्क्तीस्सुरचिता इव।

ककुभानां च दृश्यन्ते मनसेवोदितास्समम्4.27.24।।


चन्दनवृक्षाणाम् of sandalwood trees, सुरचिता इव as if arranged, पङ्क्ती: in rows, पश्य see, समम् made uniform, मनसा इव as if imaginatively, उदिताः they have grown, ककुभानां च of the direction, दृश्यन्ते they are seen.

'See the uniform rows of sandalwood trees, it looks as though they are arranged together imaginatively.
अहो सुरमणीयोऽयं देशश्शत्रुनिषूदन।

दृढं रंस्याव सौमित्रे साध्वत्र निवसावहै4.27.25।।


शत्रुनिषूदन O destroyer of enemies, सौमित्रे Saumitri, अयम् this, देशः place, सुरमणीयः most enchanting, अहो Oh, अत्र here, साधु well, निवसावहै both will reside, दृढम् surely, रंस्याव we will sport in joy.

'O Saumitri destroyer of enemies this place is most enchanting. Surely we will reside here sporting in joy .
इतश्च नातिदूरे सा किष्किन्धा चित्रकानना।

सुग्रीवस्य पुरी रम्या भविष्यति नृपात्मज4.27.26।।


नृपात्मज O prince, चित्रकानना wonderful forest, रम्या delightful place, सुग्रीवस्य पुरी Sugriva's city, सा किष्किन्धा Kishkinda, नातिदूरे not far, इत: from here, भविष्यति is located.

'O prince Sugriva's delightful city of Kishkinda with wonderful forest around is not far from here.
गीतवादित्रनिर्घोषश्श्रूयते जयतां वर।

नर्दतां वानराणां च मृदङ्गाडम्बरै स्सह4.27.27।।


जयतां वर great hero among the victorious, गीतवादित्र निर्घोषः sounds of vocal and musical instruments, नर्दताम् making sounds, वानराणां च of monkeys, मृदङ्गाडम्बरैः सह and beating of drums, श्रूयते is heard.

'O hero among the victorious, the sounds of vocal and instrumental music, the beating of drums and shrieking of monkeys are heard (from here).
लब्ध्वा भार्यां कपिवरः प्राप्य राज्यं सुहृद्वृतः।

ध्रुवं नन्दति सुग्रीवस्सम्प्राप्य महतीं श्रियम्4.27.28।।


कपिवरः monkey chief, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, भार्याम् wife, लब्ध्वा having obtained, राज्यम् kingdom, प्राप्य having attained, महतीम् very great, श्रियम् prosperity, सम्प्राप्य having earned, सहृद्वृतः surrounded by friends and relatives, नन्दति he is enjoying, ध्रुवम् surely.

'Having obtained his wife, his kingdom and attained prosperity the monkey chief, Sugriva will be surely enjoying the company of friends and relatives'.
इत्युक्त्वा न्यवसत्तत्र राघवस्सहलक्ष्मणः।

बहुदृश्यदरीकुञ्जे तस्मिन्प्रस्रवणे गिरौ4.27.29।।


राघवः Rama, इति thus, उक्त्वा having said so, बहुदृश्यदरीकुञ्जे in a spot of many caverns and shrubs of vines, तस्मिन् that, प्रस्रवणे गिरौ Prasravana mountain, तत्र there, सहलक्ष्मण: along with Lakshmana, न्यवसत् he resided.

Having said so, Rama resided with Lakshmana on the Prasvarana mountain with many beautiful caverns and shrubs of vines.
सुसुखेऽपि बहुद्रव्ये तस्मिन्हि धरणीधरे।

वसतस्तस्य रामस्य रतिरल्पापिना भवेत्4.27.30।।


सुसुखे in comfort, बहुद्रव्ये richly endowed, तस्मिन् in that, धरणीधरे on that mountain, वसतः while residing, तस्य रामस्य for that Rama's, अल्पापि even a little, रतिः pleasure, नाभवत् was not experienced.

Though Rama was residing in comfort on the mountain richly endowed with many pleasant things, he experienced little happiness.
हृतां हि भार्यां स्मरतः प्राणेभ्योऽपि गरीयसीम्।

उदयाभ्युदितं दृष्ट्वा शशाङ्कं च विशेषतः4.27.31।।


विशेषतः specially, उदयाऽभ्युदितम् rising, शशाङ्कम् Moon, दृष्ट्वा seeing, हृताम् abducted, प्राणेभ्योऽपि more than his life, गरीयसी a very dear lady, भार्याम् wife, स्मरतः remembering.

Specially with the rising Moon in the east, he remembered his abuducted wife who was dearer to him than his life.
आविवेश न तं निद्रा निशासु शयनं गतम्।

तत्समुत्थेन शोकेन बाष्पोपहतचेतसम्4.27.32।।


तत्समुत्थेन rising, शोकेन by grief, बाष्पोपहतचेतसम् mind befogged with tears, निशासु nights, शयनम् while lying in bed, गतम् gone, तम् he, निद्रा sleep, न आविवेश did not take hold him, निशासु during nights.

As Rama lay in bed, at night, his grief rose and choked him with tears.
तं शोचमानं काकुत्स्थं नित्यं शोकपरायणम्।

तुल्यदुःखोऽब्रवीद्भ्राता लक्ष्मणोऽनुनयन्वचः4.27.33।।


शोचमानम् who was worried, नित्यम् perpetually, शोकपरायणम् engrossed in sorrow, तम् him, काकुत्स्थम् Kakutstha (Rama), अनुनयन् consoling, तुल्यदुःखः an equally sad man, भ्राता brother, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, वचः words, अब्रवीत् said.

Seeing Rama worried and engrossed in endless sorrow, his brother Lakshmana who was equally sad spoke these words of consolation:
अलं वीर व्यथां गत्वा न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि।

शोचतो व्यवसीदन्ति सर्वार्था विदितं हि ते4.27.34।।


वीर O hero, व्यथाम् pain, गत्वा अलम् stop it, त्वम् you, शोचितुम् to worry, न अर्हसि you do not deserve, शोचतः by grieving, सर्वार्थाः all objects, व्यवसीदन्ति हि sink, ते to you, विदितं हि you are aware of this.

'O heroic one, you know one who broods fails to achieve his objective. So do not brood.
भवान्क्रियापरो लोके भवान् देवपरायणः।

आस्तिको धर्मशीलश्च व्यवसायी च राघव4.27.35।।

न ह्यव्यवसितश्शत्रुं राक्षसं तं विशेषतः।

समर्थस्त्वं रणे हन्तुं विक्रमैर्जिह्मकारिणम्4.27.36।।


अव्यवसितः a man of no enterprise, त्वम् you, विक्रमैः with valiant advances, जिह्मकारिणम् crooked, शत्रुम् enemy, विशेषतः specially, राक्षसम् demon, तम् him, रणे in war, हन्तुम् to slay, समर्थः न हि will not have the capacity, भवान् you, लोके in this world, कियापर a man of action, भवान् you, देवपरायणः devoted to gods, आस्तिक faithful , धर्मशील:च righteous also, व्यवसायी च also enterprising,राघव O Rama.

'O Rama you are a man of action, enterprising. You are godfearing, righteous and religious. You will not be able to kill a crooked enemy in a battle, especially a demon, with your valour if you make no endeavour.
समुन्मूलय शोकं त्वं व्यवसायं स्थिरं कुरु।

ततस्सपरिवारं तं निर्मूलं कुरु राक्षसम्।।4.27.37।।


त्वम् you, शोकम् sorrow, समुन्मूलय may uproot, व्यवसायम् daring, स्थिरं कुरु be firm in resolve, ततः then, सपरिवारम् along with all relatives, तं निर्मूलं him destroy, कुरु you do, राक्षसम् that demon.

'Root out sorrow. Be daring. Be firm in resolve. (Only) then can you destroy the demon and his family.
पृथिवीमपि काकुत्स्थ ससागरवनाचलाम्।

परिवर्तयितुं शक्तः किमङ्गपुन रावणम्4.27.38।।


काकुत्स्थ O Kakutstha, ससागरवनाचलाम् with oceans, forests and mountains, पृथिवीमपि the
entire earth, परिवर्तयितुम् can turn, शक्तः able, रावणम् that Ravana, किं पुनः what more?

'O Kakutstha, you can turn the earth with its oceans, forests and mountains, what to speak of Ravana.
शरत्कालं प्रतीक्षस्व प्रावृट्कालोऽयमागतः।

ततस्सराष्ट्रं सगणं रावणं त्वं वधिष्यसि4.27.39।।


अयम् this, प्रावृट्कालः rainy season, आगतः has set in, शरत्कालम् autumn, प्रतीक्षस्व you may wait for, ततः then, सराष्ट्रम् along with his country, सगणम् along with his troops, त्वं you, रावणम् Ravana, वधिष्यसि will slay.

'This is the rainy season.Wait for autumn.Thereafter you will destroy Ravana along with his kingdom and clan.
अहं तु खलु ते वीर्यं प्रसुप्तं प्रतिबोधये।

दीप्सैराहुतिभिः काले भस्मच्छन्नमिवानलम्4.27.40।।


अहम् I am, काले in proper time, दीप्सैः with smouldering fire, आहुतिभिः with offerings, भस्मच्छन्नम् covered with ashes, अनलम् इव like fire, ते your, प्रसुप्तम् dormant, वीर्यम् courage, प्रतिबोधये खलु I am awakening.

'I am only awakening your dormant valour as one would kindle the fire covered with ashes by making offerings.'
लक्ष्मणस्य तु तद्वाक्यं प्रतिपूज्य हितं शुभम्।

राघवस्सुहृदं स्निग्धमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्।।4.27.41।।


राघवः Rama, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, हितम् good counsel, शुभम् auspicious, तत् वाक्यम् those words, प्रतिपूज्य respecting, सुहृदम् warm hearted, स्निग्धं loving, इदं वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

On hearing the good counsel and auspicious words of Lakshmana, Rama spoke these loving and warm words:
वाच्यं यदनुरक्तेन स्निग्धेन च हितेन च।

सत्यविक्रमयुक्तेन तदुक्तं लक्ष्मण त्वया4.27.42।।


लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, अनुरक्तेन by an affectionate man, स्निग्धेन by a friendly man, हितेन च by a wellwisher, सत्यविक्रमयुक्तेन by a person endowed with true valour, यत् such, वाच्यम् words said, तत् that, त्वया by you, उक्तम् has been said.

'O Lakshmana you have spoken the words of an affectionate and friendly counsellor of proven valour.
एष शोकः परित्यक्तस्सर्वकार्यावसादकः।

विक्रमेष्वप्रतिहतं तेजः प्रोत्साहयाम्यहम्।।4.27.43।।


सर्वकार्यावसादकः which can destroy all work, एषःthis, शोकः sorrow, परित्यक्तः is given up, अहम् I, विक्रमेषु during heroic exploits, अप्रतिहतम् unaffected, तेजः vigour प्रोत्सहयामि I will resort to

'This sorrow which dampens one's daring spirit is given up. I shall now resort to such undaunted valour during my heroic exploits.
शरत्कालं प्रतीक्षिष्ये स्थितोऽस्मि वचने तव।

सुग्रीवस्य नदीनां च प्रसादमनुपालयन्4.27.44।।


सुग्रीवस्य Sugriva's, नदीनां च and rivers, प्रसादम् pleasure, अनुपालयन् waiting for, शरत्कालम् for autumn, प्रतीक्षिष्ये I will wait, तव your, वचने words, स्थितः अस्मि resolute.

'I will wait for autumn. I will stick to your advice while I wait until Sugriva and the rivers are pleased (with moderate flow of water.)
उपकारेण वीरस्तु प्रतीकारेण युज्यते।

अकृतज्ञोऽप्रतिकृतो हन्ति सत्त्ववतां मनः4.27.45।।


उपकारेण with him, वीरः hero, प्रतीकारेण by helping in turn, युज्यते will not fail to do, अकृतज्ञः ungrateful, अप्रतिकृतः one who does not return a favour, सत्त्ववताम् spirited people's, मनः heart, हन्ति destroys.

अथैव मुक्तःप्रणिधाय लक्ष्मणः

कृताञ्जलिस्तत्प्रतिपूज्य भाषितम्।

उवाच रामं स्वभिरामदर्शनं

प्रदर्शयन्दर्शनमात्मनश्शुभम्4.27.46।।


लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, अथ thereupon, एवम् in this way ,उक्त: told, प्रणिधाय after reflecting thoughtfully, कृताञ्जलिः with folded palms in suplication, तत् that, भाषितम् words expresed, प्रतिपूज्य after honouring, आत्मनः his own, शुभम् auspicious, दर्शनम् view, प्रदर्शयन् expressing, स्वभिरामदर्शनम् him who is handsome, रामम् Rama, उवाच said.

Then Lakshmana reflected upon the words of Rama thoughtfully. He honoured his brother's words by receiving his advice with folded hands and spoke to his handsome brother giving out his own views:
यथोक्तमेतत्तव सर्वमीप्सितं

नरेन्द्र कर्ता न चिराद्धरीश्वरः।

शरत्प्रतीक्षः क्षमतामिमं भवान्

जलप्रपातं रिपुनिग्रहे धृतः4.27.47।।


नरेन्द्र king, यथा as, अद्धरीश्वर excellant king, नचिरात् soon, तव your, ईप्सितम् desire, एतत् सर्वम् all this, कर्ता going to do, रिपुनिग्रहे to combat with the enemy, धृतः be determined, भवान् thyself, शरत्प्रतीक्षः waiting for autumn, इमम् this, जलप्रपातम् waterflow, क्षमताम् forgive.

'O lord of men, your desire will be fulfilled soon. Be determined to fight the enemy while waiting for autumn. Forgive this rainy season (and its water that obstructs).
नियम्य कोपं प्रतिपाल्यतां शरत्

क्षमस्व मासां श्चतुरो मया सह।

वसाचलेऽस्मिन्मृगराजसेविते

संवर्धयन् शत्रुवधे समुद्यमम्4.27.48।।


शत्रुवधे in slaying of enemies, समुद्यमम् effort, क्षमस्व you may pardon, कोपम् anger, नियम्य controlling, शरत् autumn, प्रतिपाल्यताम् you may wait for, चतुरः four, मासान् months, संवर्तयन् carrying out, मृगराजसेविते inhabited by lions, अस्मिन् अचले on this mountain, मया सह along with me, वस stay.

'Control your anger and wait for autumn. Pardon these (intervening) four months (which put a halt on your wareffort). Stay with me on this mountain infested with lions. Brace up to kill the enemy.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे सप्तविंशस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the twentyseventh sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
