Sloka & Translation

[Information brought by Suparshva, Sampati's son.]

ततस्तदमृतास्वादं गृध्रराजेन भाषितम्।

निशम्य मुदिता हृष्टास्ते वचः प्लवगर्षभाः।।4.59.1।।


ततः then, अमृतास्वादम् tasting nectar, गृध्रराजेन by the king of vultures, भाषितम् spoken, तत् वचः those words, निशम्य on listening, ते they, प्लवगर्षभाः mighty monkeys, मुदिताः delighted, हृष्टाः pleased.

The mighty monkeys were delighted to hear the nectarlike words of the king of vultures.
जाम्बवान् वानरश्रेष्ठस्सह सर्वैः प्लवङ्गमैः।

भूतलात्सहसोत्थाय गृध्रराजानमब्रवीत्।।4.59.2।।


वानरश्रेष्ठः king of bears, जाम्बवान् Jambavan, सर्वैः by all, प्लवङ्गमैः सह with all monkeys, सहसा at once, भूतलात् from the ground, उत्थाय got up, गृध्रराजानम् to the king of vultures, अब्रवीत् said.

Jambavan the king of bears got up at once from the ground along with the monkeys and spoke to the king of vultures:
क्व सीता केन वा दृष्टा को वा हरति मैथिलीम्।

तदाख्यातु भवात्सर्वं गतिर्भव वनौकसाम्।।4.59.3।।


सीता Sita, क्व where is she, केन वा by whom, दृष्टा was seen, मैथिलीम् to the princess from Mithila, को वा who did, हरति was carrying, भवान् you, तत् सर्वम् everything about that, आख्यातु tell, वनौकसाम् to the monkeys, गतिः ultimate saviour, भव you are.

'Where is Sita now? By whom else was she seen while being carried? Pray, tell us everything. You are the ultimate saviour of monkeys.
को दाशरथि बाणानां वज्रवेगनिपातिनाम्।

स्वयं लक्ष्मणमुक्तानां न चिन्तयति विक्रमम्।।4.59.4।।


वज्रवेगनिपातिनाम् of those falling as swiftly as thunderbolt, दाशरथिबाणानाम् of Rama's arrows, स्वयम् directly, लक्ष्मणमुक्तानाम् released by Lakshmana, विक्रमम् power, कः who, न चिन्तयति is not taking seriously.

'Who is not aware of Rama's swift arrows which are like thunderbolt? Who is not able to assess the speed and power of arrows of Lakshmana released directly?'
स हरीन्प्रीतिसंयुक्तान्सीताश्रुतिसमाहितान्।

पुनराश्वसयन्प्रीत: इदं वचनमब्रवीत्।।4.59.5।।


सः Sampati, प्रीतः pleased, प्रीतिसंयुक्तान् happy, सीताश्रुतिसमाहितान् assembled to hear about Sita, हरीन् monkeys, आश्वासयन् reassuring them, पुनः again, इदं this वचनम् words, अब्रवीत् said.

Pleased to see the happiness and eagernes of the monkeys assembled to hear about Sita, Sampati continued in order to reassure them:
श्रूयतामिह वैदेह्या यथा मे हरणं श्रुतम्।

येन चापि ममाऽख्यातं यत्र वायतलोचना।।4.59.6।।


वैदेह्या: of the princess from Videha, हरणम् abduction, मे by me, यथा as, श्रुतम् heard, येन च and by whom, मम to me, आख्यातम् was informed, आयतलोचना largeeyed lady, यत्र च and where, इह now, श्रूयताम् you hear.

'Now hear by whom I was informed about the abduction of the largeeyed princess from Videha and where she is at present.
अहमस्मिन्गिरौ दुर्गे बहुयोजनमायते।

चिरान्निपतितो वृद्धः क्षीणप्राणपराक्रमः।।4.59.7।।


बहुयोजनम् several yojanas, आयते wide, दुर्गे in this inaccessible place, अस्मिन् गिरौ on this mountain, चिरात् for a long time, निपतितः fallen, अहम् I am, वृद्धः old, क्षीणप्राणपराक्रमः with my vitality and prowess depleted.

'With my vitality and prowess depleted, I have been staying for a long time on this mountain, extended by several yojanas and inaccessible.
तं मामेवं गतं पुत्रस्सुपार्श्वोनाम नामतः।

आहारेण यथाकालं बिभर्ति पततां वरः।।4.59.8।।


एवं गतम् Reduced to this state, तम् him, माम् me, पतताम् among birds, वरः best among, नामतः named, सुपार्श्वो नाम Suparshva, पुत्रः son, यथाकालम् in time, आहारेण with food, बिभर्ति maintains.

'Reduced to this state, I have been maintained by food given in time by my son named Suparshva, best among birds.
तीक्ष्णकामास्तु गन्धर्वास्तीक्ष्णकोपा भुजङ्गमाः।

मृगाणां तु भयं तीक्ष्णं ततस्तीक्ष्णक्षुधा वयम्।।4.59.9।।


गन्धर्वाः gandharvas, तीक्ष्णकामाः with intense passion, भुजङ्गमाः serpents, तीक्ष्णकोपाः with violent anger, मृगाणाम् for the deer, भयम् fear, तीक्ष्णम् is intense, ततः then, वयम् we, तीक्ष्णक्षुधा: have intense hunger.

'Gandharvas have intense passion. Serpents show violent anger. Deer have great fear. And we vultures have great hunger.
स कदाचित्क्षुधार्तस्य ममाहाराभिकाङ्क्षिणः।

गतसूर्येऽहनि प्राप्तो मम पुत्रो ह्यनामिषः।।4.59.10।।


कदाचित् once, मम पुत्रः my son, सः he, आहाराभिकाङ्क्षिणः with intense longing for food, मम myself, क्षुधार्तस्य for me so hungry, अहनि day, गतसूर्ये after sun set, अनामिषः without meat, प्राप्तः came.

'Once my son came to me without meat after sunset while I was feeling hungry for food.
स मामाहारसंरोधात्पीडितं प्रीतिवर्धनः।

अनुमान्य यथातत्त्वमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्।।4.59.11।।


आहारसंरोधात् with no food, माम् me, पीडितं I was tormented, सः he, प्रीतिवर्धनः who makes me happy, अनुमान्य suspected, यथातत्त्वम् what had truly happened, इदं वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

'I was thinking, tormented with hunger, my son who always keeps me happy told me exactly what had happened:
अहं तात यथाकालमामिषार्थी खमाप्लुतः।

महेन्द्रस्य गिरेर्द्वारमावृत्य सुसमास्थितः।।4.59.12।।


तात O father, अहम् I, आमिषार्थी intending to get food, यथाकालम् at the right time, महेन्द्रस्य गिरेः of Mahendra mountain, द्वारम् at the entrance, आवृत्य covering, सुसमास्थितः I was stationed.

'O dear father I went to get food at the right time and stood blocking the entrance of mount Mahendra.
तत्र सत्त्वसहस्राणां सागरान्तरचारिणाम्।

पन्थानमेकोऽध्यवसं सन्निरोद्धुमवाङ्मुखः।।4.59.13।।


तत्र there, सागरान्तचारिणाम् by the inhabitants of the ocean, सत्त्वसहस्राणाम् of thousands of creatures, पन्थानम् path, सन्निरोद्धुम् obstructing the path, एकः I alone, अवाङ्मुखः looking downwards, अध्यवसम् stood.

'There I stood alone looking down, obstructing the path of thousands of creatures inhabiting the ocean.
तत्र कश्चिन्मया दृष्ट स्सूर्योदयसमप्रभाम्।

स्त्रियमादाय गच्छन्वै भिन्नाञ्जनचयप्रभः।।4.59.14।।


सूर्योदयसमप्रभाम् a lady like the radiance of the rising Sun, स्त्रियम् lady, आदाय carrying, गच्छन् was going, भिन्नाञ्जनचयप्रभः dark and huge like a mass of collyrium, कश्चित् some one, मया by me, तत्र there, दृष्टः was seen.

'I saw a person who was dark and huge like a mass of collyrium carrying a lady whose radiance was like the rising Sun.
सोऽहमभ्यवहारार्थी तौ दृष्ट्वा कृतनिश्चयः।

तेन साम्ना विनीतेन पन्थानमभियाचितः।।4.59.15।।


तौ both, दृष्ट्वा seeing, अभ्यवहारार्थी looking for food, कृतनिश्चयः resolved, विनीतेन politely, तेन by him, साम्ना in a courteous manner, पन्थानम् path, अनुयाचितः requested.

'Since I was looking for food I resolved to seize both of them. (But) he asked me in a gentle and courteous manner to make way (since I was blocking the aerial path).
न हि सामोपपन्नानां प्रहर्ता विद्यते क्वचित्।

नीचेष्वपि जनः कश्चित्किमङ्ग बत मद्विधः।।4.59.16।।


सामोपपन्नानाम् for polite people, प्रहर्ता who strikes, जनः people, नीचेष्वपि even among the
mean, कश्चित् any one, क्वचित् at any place, न हि not do, मद्विधः one like me, किमङ्ग not to say, बत indeed.

'Who will strike polite people? Even the mean do not do it anywhere. And what to speak of me.
स यातस्तेजसा व्योम सङ्क्षिपन्निव वेगतः।

अथाऽहं खेचरैर्भूतैरभिगम्य सभाजितः।।4.59.17।।


सः he, वेगत: hurriedily, तेजसा with splendour, व्योम the sky, सङ्क्षिपन्निव as if he was enveloping, यातः he proceeded, अथ now, अहम् I, खेचरैः by the flying creatures in the sky, भूतैः by creatures, अभिगम्य approached, सभाजितः respected me

'He flew hurriedly with splendour as though he was enveloping the sky (making it small). All the flying creatures in the sky came and greeted me with respect.
दिष्ट्या जीवसि तातेति ह्यब्रुवन्मां महर्षयः।

कथञ्चित्सकळत्रोऽसौ गतस्ते स्वस्त्यसंशयम्।।4.59.18।।


तात O dear child, दिष्ट्या lucky, जीवसि you are, असौ he, सकलत्रः with a lady, कथञ्चित् some how, गतः went, ते to you, असंशयम् no doubt, स्वस्ति be it safe, इति thus, महर्षयः the great sages, माम् me, अब्रुवन् saying.

'I heard the great sages saying, 'O dear you are lucky to be saved. He has somehow gone from here with that lady (without hurting you). Undoubtedly you are lucky.'
एव मुक्तस्ततोऽहं तैस्सिद्धै: परमशोभनैः।

स च मे रावणो राजा रक्षसां प्रतिवेदितः।।4.59.19।।

हरन्दाशरथेर्भार्यां रामस्य जनकात्मजाम्।

भ्रष्टाभरणकौशेयां शोकवेगपराजिताम्।।4.59.20।।

रामलक्ष्मणयोर्नाम क्रोशन्तीं मुक्तमूर्धजाम्।


ततः then, अहम् I, परमशोभनैः by the glorious, सिद्धैः by siddhas, एवम् that way, दाशरथेः of the son of Dasaratha, रामस्य Rama's, भार्याम् wife, जनकात्मजाम् daughter of Janaka, भ्रष्टाभरणकौशेयाम् ornaments dropped and silken robe slipping, शोकवेगपराजिताम् overcome with the force of grief, रामलक्ष्मणयोः of Rama and Lakshmana, नाम name, क्रोशन्तीम् while she cried, मुक्तमूर्धजाम् hair dishevelled, हरन् while abducting, सः he, रक्षासाम् राजा king of demons, रावणः Ravana, प्रतिवेदितः came to be known.

'I was greeted by the most illustrious siddhas. I came to know from them that he was Ravana, the king of demons. I was looking at him while he was abducting Janaka's daughter, who was the wife of Dasaratha's Rama. Her ornaments had dropped and silken robes had slipped since she lost hold on herself. She was crying, loudly calling out the names of Rama and Lakshmana, her hair dishevelled.
एष कालात्ययस्तावदिति कालविदां वरः।।4.59.21।।

एतमर्थं समग्रं मे सुपार्श्वः प्रत्यवेदयत्।


तात O dear father, एषः this, कालात्ययः cause of delay, इति thus, कालविदां among those who knew the value of time, वरः best among birds, सुपार्श्वः Suparhsva, एतमर्थम् this account, समग्रम् in detail, मे to me, प्रत्यवेदयत् reported.

'O father this is the cause of my delay', said Suparshva, who knew the value of time. Thus he gave the entire account to me.
तच्छृत्वाऽपि हि मे बुद्धिर्नासीत्काचित्पराक्रमे।।4.59.22।।

अपक्षो हि कथं पक्षी कर्म किञ्चिदुपक्रमे।


तत् that, श्रुत्वाऽपि even on hearing, मे me, पराक्रमे in advancing (against Ravana), काचित् any such , बुद्धिः thought, नासीत् could not attempt, अपक्षः without wings, पक्षी bird, किञ्चित् कर्म do even a little , कथम् how, उपक्रमे could I start.

'Even after hearing this I could not advance (against Ravana). How could I, a vulture
without wings, leap even a little?
यत्तु शक्यं मया कर्तुं वाग्बुद्धिगुणवर्तिना।।4.59.23।।

श्रूयतां तत्प्रवक्ष्यामि भवतां पौरुषाश्रयम्।


वाग्बुद्धिगुणवर्तिना endowed with the faculty of thinking and speaking, मया by me, यत् such, कर्तुम् to execute, शक्यम् capable, भवताम् to you, पौरुषाश्रयम् with your prowess, तत्र there, वक्ष्यामि I shall tell, श्रूयताम् you may listen.

'Being endowed with the faculty of thinking and speech I shall tell you what is possible for you to execute with your prowess. Listen.
वाङ्मतिभ्यां तु सर्वेषां करिष्यामि प्रियं हि वः।।4.59.24।।

यद्धि दाशरथेः कार्यं मम तन्नात्र संशयः।


सर्वेषाम् for all of you, वः to you, वाङ्मतिभ्याम् by word and thought, प्रियम् dear to you, करिष्यामि I will do, यत् हि whatever, दाशरथेः to Dasarathi, कार्यम् is the task, तत् that, मम to me, अत्र there, संशयः doubt, न not.

'I will please you with my word and thought and do not doubt that Rama's task is dear to me as well.
ते भवन्तो मतिश्रेष्ठा बलवन्तो मनस्विनः।।4.59.25।।

प्रेषिताः कपिराजेन देवैरपि दुरासदाः।


ते those of you, मतिश्रेष्ठाः very wise, मनस्विनः sensitive , बलवन्त: strong, देवैरपि even by gods, दुरासदाः unapproachable, भवन्तः you are, कपिराजेन by king of monkeys, प्रेषिताः sent.

'Indeed, you monkeys are very wise, strong and sensitive. The king of monkeys has sent you on this mission. You cannot be conquered even by gods.
रामलक्ष्मणबाणाश्च निशिताः कङ्कपत्रिणः।।4.59.26।।

त्रयाणामपि लोकानां पर्याप्तास्त्राणनिग्रहे।


कङ्कपत्रिणः heronfeathered, निशिताः sharp, रामलक्ष्मणबाणाश्च are the arrows of Rama and Lakshmana, त्रयाणाम् all the three, लोकानाम् of worlds, त्राणनिग्रहे to protect or subdue, पर्याप्ताः are enough.

'The heronfeathered arrows of Rama and Lakshmana are sharp and strong enough to protect or subdue all the three worlds.
कामं खलु दशग्रीव स्तेजोबलसमन्वितः।।4.59.27।।

भवतां तु समर्थानां न किञ्चिदपि दुष्करम्।


दशग्रीवः the tenheaded Ravana, तेजोबलसमन्वितः खलु कामम् is mighty, powerful and strong, तु but, समर्थानाम् for the efficient ones, भवताम् for you, दुष्करम् difficult, किञ्चिदपि even a little, न not.

'The tenheaded Ravana is mighty, powerful and strong, indeed. But you are efficient and it will not be difficult for you to achieve this task.
तदलं कालसङ्गेन क्रियतां बुद्धिनिश्चयः।।4.59.28।।

न हि कर्मसु सज्जन्ते बुद्धिमन्तो भवद्विधाः।


तत् then, कालसङ्गेन by complying to the time limit (set by Sugriva), अलम् enough, बुद्धिनिश्चयः resolute, क्रियताम् may be made, भवद्विधाः persons like you, बुद्धिमन्तः wise people, कर्मसु in accepting challenges, न सज्जन्ते हि not lag behind.

'Do not bother about the time limit. Resolve to achieve the objective, for wise people like you should not lag behind in accepting challenges.'
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे एकोनषष्टितमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the fiftyninth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
