[Sugriva's coronation --- declaration of Angada as heir apparent --- retirement of Rama to Rshyamuka --- Rama asks Sugriva to make arrangements to find Sita after the rainy season.]

tataśśōkābhisantaptaṅ sugrīvaṅ klinnavāsasam.

śākhāmṛgamahāmātrāḥ parivāryōpatasthirē4.26.1৷৷


tataḥ then, śōkābhisantaptam grief-stricken , klinnavāsasam whose clothes were wet, sugrīvam Sugriva, śākhāmṛgamahāmātrāḥ chiefs of army of monkeys, parivārya surrounded, upatasthirē waited in attendance.

Then the chiefs of the army of the monkeys surrounded Sugriva, who was overcome with grief and was still in wet clothes (since he had taken bath at the conclusion of the funeral rites) and waited.
abhigamya mahābāhuṅ rāmamakliṣṭakāriṇam.

sthitāḥ prāñjalayassarvē pitāmahamivarṣayaḥ4.26.2৷৷


sarvē all, pitāmaham creator Brahma, ṛṣayaḥ iva like sages, mahābāhum long-armed, akliṣṭakāriṇam who removes sorrow, rāmam to Rama, abhigamya having approached, prāñjalayaḥ with folded hands, sthitāḥ stood.

Just like sages stand before the creator Brahma, all the monkeys stood with folded hands before the long-armed Rama, the remover of sorrow.
tataḥ kāñcanaśailābha staruṇārkanibhānanaḥ.

abravītprāñjalirvākyaṅ hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ4.26.3৷৷


tataḥ then, kāñcanaśailābhaḥ of the hue of the golden mountain, taruṇārkanibhānanaḥ whose face
was like the rising Sun, mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanūmān Hanuman, prāñjaliḥ with folded hands, vākyam these words, abravīt said.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god, glowing like a golden mountain, whose face resembled the rising Sun addressed Rama with folded hands:
bhavatprasādātsugrīvaḥ pitṛpaitāmahaṅ mahat.

vānarāṇāṅ suduṣprāpaṅ prāptō rājyamidaṅ prabhō4.26.4৷৷


prabhō O lord!, sugrīva: Sugriva, suduṣprāpam that which is difficult to acquire, vānarāṇām of monkeys, idam this, pitṛpaitāmaham ancestral, mahat great, rājyam kingdom, bhavatprasādāt by your grace, prāptaḥ has obtained.

'O Lord! by your grace Sugriva inherited the ancestral kingdom which would have been otherwise difficult.
bhavatā samanujñātaḥ praviśya nagaraṅ śubham4.26.5৷৷

saṅvidhāsyati kāryāṇi sarvāṇi sasuhṛjjanaḥ.

snātō.yaṅ vividhairgandhairauṣadhaiśca yathāvidhi4.26.6৷৷


ayam he, sasuhṛjjanaḥ along with friends, bhavatā by you, samanujñātaḥ permitted, śubham auspicious, nagaram city, praviśya on entering, vividhaiḥ with different kinds of, gandhaiḥ with fragrants, auṣadhaiśca with medicinal herbs, yathāvidhi as per tradition, snātaḥ bathed, sarvāṇi all, kāryāṇi works, saṅvidhāsyati will do.

'Permitted by your gracious self, he will enter the auspicious city along with his friends and perform his duties. He had his auspicious bath in fragrant waters with medicinal herbs as per tradition.
arcayiṣyati ratnaiśca mālyaiśca tvāṅ viśēṣataḥ.

imāṅ giriguhāṅ ramyāmabhigantumitō.rhasi4.26.7৷৷

kuruṣva svāmisambandhaṅ vānarānsampraharṣaya.


mālyaiśca with garlands, ratnaiśca and with gems, viśēṣataḥ specially, tvām you, arcayiṣyati he will propitiate you, tvam you, ramyām delightful, imām this, giriguhām mountain, abhigantum to reach, arhasi proper for you, vānarān to monkeys, svāmisambandham relationship with the king, kuruṣva establish, sampraharṣaya please.

'He wants to propitiate you first specially with garlands and gems. Pray enter this beautiful mountain cave for the pleasure of the monkeys and establish relationship with king Sugriva.'
ēvamuktō hanumatā rāghavaḥ paravīrahā4.26.8৷৷

pratyuvāca hanūmantaṅ buddhimānvākyakōvidaḥ.


hanumatā by Hanuman, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ said, paravīrahā slayer of enemies, vākyakōvidaḥ skilful in talk, buddhimān wise, rāghavaḥ Rama, hanūmantam to Hanuman, pratyuvāca replied.

Requested by Hanuman who was skilful in conversation, wise Rama, slayer of enemies, replied:
caturdaśa samāssaumya! grāmaṅ vā yadi vā puram4.26.9৷৷

na pravēkṣyāmi hanumanpiturnirdēśapālakaḥ.


saumya dear!, hanuman Hanuman, pituḥ father's, nirdēśapālakaḥ obedient to father's command, caturdaśa fourteen, samāḥ years, grāmaṅ vā a village or, yadi vā or if, puram a city, na pravēkṣyāmi I will not enter.

'Dear Hanuman! In obedience to my father's command I should not enter any village or city for fourteen years.
susamṛddhāṅ guhāṅ ramyāṅ sugrīvō vānararṣabhaḥ4.26.10৷৷

praviṣṭō vidhivadvīraḥ kṣipraṅ rājyē.bhiṣicyatām.


susamṛddhām highly prosperous, ramyāṅ beautiful, guhām cavern, praviṣṭaḥ he will enter, vīraḥ a brave man, vānararṣabhaḥ a bull among monkeys, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, kṣipram at once, vidhivat with due rituals, rājyē kingdom, abhiṣicyatām be installed.

'Let Sugriva enter the beautiful prosperous cavern (Kishkinda) and be installed by you as king with due rituals.'
ēvamuktvā hanūmantaṅ rāmassugrīvamabravīt4.26.11৷৷

vṛttajñō vṛttasampannamudārabalavikramam.


vṛttajñaḥ knower of etiquette, rāmaḥ Rama, hanūmantam to Hanuman, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, vṛttasampannam endowed with wisdom, udārabalavikramam mighty strong, sugrīvam Sugriva, abravīt said.

Having thus spoken to Hanuman, Rama who knew etiquette addressed mighty Sugriva, endowed with wisdom:
imamapyaṅgadaṅ vīra! yauvarājyē.bhiṣēcaya4.26.12৷৷

jyēṣṭhasya sa sutō jyēṣṭhassadṛśō vikramēṇa tē.

aṅgadō.yamadīnātmā yauvarājyasya bhājanam4.26.13৷৷


vīra O hero, imam this, aṅgadamapi Angada also, yauvarājyē as heir-apparent, abhiṣēcaya consecrate, jyēṣṭhasya elder brother's, jyēṣṭhaḥ sutaḥ eldest son, vikramēṇa in prowess, tē sadṛśaḥ like you, adīnātmā a noble person, ayam aṅgadaḥ this Angada, yauvarājyasya of the heir apparent, bhājanam fit.

'O hero! consecrate Angada as heir-apparent since he deserves it as the eldest son of your brother, a noble soul and equal to you in prowess.
pūrvō.yaṅ vārṣikō māsaḥ śrāvaṇassalilāgamaḥ.

pravṛttāssaumya catvārō māsā vārṣikasajñikāḥ4.26.14৷৷


saumya O noble lord!, vārṣikasajñikāḥ known as rainy days, catvāraḥ māsāḥ four months, pravṛttāḥ commenced, ayam this, salilāgamaḥ rain has started pouring down, vārṣikaḥ in the rainy season, pūrvaḥ first one, śrāvaṇa māsaḥ month of Sraavana.

'O noble Sugriva! the four months from now will be rainy season. This is Sravana, the first month of the season in which rain is expected to start pouring.
nāyamudyōgasamayaḥ praviśa tvaṅ purīṅ śubhām.

asminvatsyāmyahaṅ saumya! parvatē saha lakṣmaṇaḥ4.26.15৷৷


saumya! O good-natured Sugriva!, ayam this, udyōgasamayaḥ time for enterprise, na not, tvam you, śubhām auspicious, purīm capital of Kishkinda, praviśa you may enter, aham I, sahalakṣmaṇaḥ along with Lakshmana, asmin parvatē on this mountain, vatsyāmi will reside.

'O good-natured Sugriva! this is not a suitable time for any endeavour. Go to the auspicious capital city of Kishkinda and I will reside on the mountain with Lakshmana.
iyaṅ giriguhā ramyā viśālā yuktamārutā.

prabhūtasalilā saumya! prabhūtakamalōtpalā4.26.16৷৷


saumya dear Sugriva!, iyam this, giriguhā cavern of the mountain, ramyā delightful, viśālā large, yuktamārutā with adequate breeze, prabhūtasalilā with abundant water nearby, prabhūtakamalōtpalā with lotuses and lilies.

'Dear Sugriva! this cavern of the mountain is large and airy. It has abundant water resources with lotuses and lilies.
kārtikē samanuprāptē tvaṅ rāvaṇavadhē yata.

ēṣa nassamayassaumya! praviśa tvaṅ svamālayam4.26.17৷৷

abhiṣiktasva rājyē ca suhṛdassampraharṣaya.


kārtikē when Kartika, samanuprāptē sets in, tvam you, rāvaṇavadhē for the slaying of Ravana, yata you try, saumya! O good Sugriva!, ēṣaḥ this, naḥ for us, samayaḥ proper time, tvam you, svam your, ālayam city, praviśa enter, rājyē in the kingdom, abhiṣiktasva on installing yourself, suhṛdaḥ to your friends, sampraharṣaya cheer them .

'Enter the city and get yourself installed and cheer your friends. Make all arrangement for killing Ravana when the month of Kartika begins as it is the proper time (for the purpose).
iti rāmābhyanujñātassugrīvō vānarādhipaḥ4.26.18৷৷

pravivēśa purīṅ ramyāṅ kiṣkindhāṅ vālipālitām.


iti thus, rāmābhyanujñātaḥ permitted by Rama, vānarādhipaḥ lord of monkeys, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, vālipālitām ruled by Vali, ramyām beautiful, kiṣkindhāṅ purīm Kishkinda city, pravivēśa entered.

Thus permitted by Rama , Sugriva, lord of the monkeys entered the beautiful city of Kishkinda (once) ruled by Vali.
taṅ vānarasahasrāṇi praviṣṭaṅ vānarēśvaram4.26.19৷৷

abhivādya praviṣṭāni sarvataḥ paryavārayan.


vānarēśvaram lord of monkeys, praviṣṭam entered, tam him, abhivādya welcomed, vānarasahasrāṇi thousands of monkeys, praviṣṭāni entered, sarvataḥ all, paryavārayan standing in attendance.

Thousands of monkeys entered the city of Kishkinda along with their king, and stood in attendance everywhere.
tataḥ prakṛtayassarvā dṛṣṭvā harigaṇēśvaram4.26.20৷৷

praṇamya mūrdhnā patitā vasudhāyāṅ samāhitāḥ.


tataḥ then, sarvāḥ all, prakṛtayaḥ people of the city, harigaṇēśvaram to the chief of monkey clan, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, mūrdhnā with the forehead touching the ground, praṇamya having prostrated, samāhitāḥ all collected together, vasudhāyām on the floor, patitāḥ fell.

Then all the subjects of the city collected together, prostrated to the chief of the monkey clan with their forehead touching the ground (as a mark of respect) and sat down.
sugrīvaḥ prakṛtīssarvāssambhāṣyōtthāpya vīryavān4.26.21৷৷

bhrāturantaḥpuraṅ saumyaṅ pravivēśa mahābalaḥ.


vīryavān mighty, mahābalaḥ powerful, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, sarvāḥ all, prakṛtīḥ subjects, utthāpya having lifted them up, sambhāṣya addressed, bhrātuḥ brother's, saumyam gentle, antaḥpuram inner chambers, pravivēśa entered.

Asking the monkeys to rise to their feet, the mighty and powerful Sugriva entered the inner chambers of his brother.
praviśya tvabhiniṣkrāntaṅ sugrīvaṅ plavagēśvaram4.26.22৷৷

abhyaṣiñcanta suhṛdassahasrākṣamivāmarāḥ.


praviśya having entered, tvabhiniṣkrāntaṅ and returned, plavagēśvaram lord of monkeys, sugrīvam Sugriva, suhṛdaḥ friends and relations, amarāḥ gods, sahasrākṣam Indra, iva like, abhyaṣiñcanta performed consecration.

With Sugriva,the lord of the monkeys, returned to Kishkinda, his kith and kin coronated him just as the gods consecrated the thousand-eyed Indra.
tasya pāṇḍuramājahruśchatraṅ hēmapariṣkṛtam4.26.23৷৷

śuklē ca vālavyajanē hēmadaṇḍē yaśaskarē.

tathā sarvāṇi ratnāni sarvabījauṣadhīrapi4.26.24

sakṣīrāṇāṅ ca vṛkṣāṇāṅ prarōhānkusumāni ca.

śuklāni caiva vastrāṇi śvētaṅ caivānulēpanam4.26.25৷৷

sugandhīni ca mālyāni sthalajānyambujāni ca.

candanāni ca divyāni gandhāṅśca vividhānbahūn4.26.26৷৷

akṣataṅ jātarūpaṅ ca priyaṅgumadhusarpiṣī.

dadhi carma ca vaiyāghraṅ vārāhī cāpyupānahau4.26.27৷৷

samālambhanamādāya rōcanāṅ samanaśśilām.

āgmustatra muditā varāḥ kanyāstu ṣōḍaśa4.26.28৷৷


pāṇḍuram pale white, hēmapariṣkṛtam decorated with gold, chatram canopy, hēmadaṇḍē a pair of golden staff, yaśaskarē that which confers glory, śuklē white, vālavyajanē ca fans made of the tail of Chamari deer, tasya of him, ājahruḥ brought, tathā so also, ṣōḍaśa sixteen, muditāḥ happy, varāḥ fine, kanyāśca young girls, sarvāṇi all kinds, ratnāni gems, sarvabījauṣadhīrapi all kinds of herbs grown from medicinal seeds, sakṣīrāṇām with sap, vṛkṣāṇām of trees, prarōhān tender leaves and shoots, kusumāni ca and flowers, śuklāni white, vastrāṇi clothes, caiva also, śvētam white, anulēpanaṅ caiva and unguent , sugandhīni scented, mālyāni garlands, sthalajāni that grows on land, ambujāni ca even lotuses, divyāni heavenly, candanāni ca and sandalpaste, vividhān of different kinds, bahūn many, gandhāṅśca fragrants, akṣatam solid, jātarūpaṅ ca gold, priyaṅgumadhusarpiṣī honey of priyangu, dadhi curds, vaighram tiger's, carma ca skin also, vārāhī boar, upānahau sandals, samālambanam collection, rōcanāṅ a kind of yellow pigment known as gorochana, manaśśilām along with highly valued unguents made of red arsenic, ādāya brought, tatra there, ājagmuḥ and came.

The monkeys brought a white canopy decorated with gold and two chamaras with glorious golden staff. They also brought jewels, all kinds of medicinal herbs, sprouts, sap from trees, white flowers and white clothes, unguents, garlands of fragrant lotuses that grow on land and water, heavently sandal, fragrants of different kinds, gold-coloured paddy, honey of priyanga, curds, tiger skin and sandals made of boar skin. Then sixteen beautiful, cheerful females appeared with unguent, gorochana
mixed with red arsenic (used for putting tilaka on the forehead).
tatastē vānaraśrēṣṭhaṅ yathākālaṅ yathāvidhi.

ratnairvastraiśca bhakṣyaiśca tōṣayitvā dvijarṣabhān4.26.29৷৷


tataḥ then, ratnaiḥ with gems, vastraiśca and with clothes, bhakṣyaiḥ with eatables, dvijarṣabhān brahmins, tōṣayitvā after satisfying them, tē they, yathāvidhi duly, vānaraśrēṣṭham best of monkeys.

Then they duly propitiated the brahmins, offering them gifts of gems, clothes and eatables.
tataḥ kuśaparistīrṇaṅ samiddhaṅ jātavēdasam.

mantrapūtēna haviṣā hutvā mantravidō janāḥ4.26.30৷৷


tataḥ then, mantravidaḥ who recite vedic hymns, janāḥ people, kuśaparistīrṇam strewn with kusa grass, samiddham kindled, jātavēdasam fire, mantrapūtēna by sanctifying with mantras, haviṣā with havis, hutvā having offered,

Then the priests (people who recite Vedic hymns) strew around kusa grass, kindled sacred fire with recitation of mantras and made offerings of havis into the fire.
tatō hēmapratiṣṭhānē varāstaraṇasaṅvṛtē.

prāsādaśikharē ramyē citramālyōpaśōbhitē4.26.31৷৷

prāṅmukhaṅ vividhairmantrai: sthāpayitvā varāsanē.

nadīnadēbhyassaṅhṛtya tīrthēbhyaśca samantataḥ4.26.32৷৷

āhṛtya ca samudrēbhyassarvēbhyō vānararṣabhāḥ.

apaḥ kanakakumbhēṣu nidhāya vimalāśśubhāḥ4.26.33৷৷

śubhairvṛṣabhaśṛṅgaiśca kalaśaiścāpi kāñcanaiḥ.

śāstradṛṣṭēna vidhinā maharṣivihitēna ca4.26.34৷৷

gajō gavākṣō gavayaśśarabhō gandhamādanaḥ.

maindaśca dvividaścaiva hanumānjāmbavānnalaḥ4.26.35৷৷

abhyaṣiñcanta sugrīvaṅ prasannēna sugandhinā.

salilēna sahasrākṣaṅ vasavō vāsavaṅ yathā4.26.36৷৷


tataḥ then, hēmapratiṣṭhānē on a golden throne, varāstaraṇasaṅvṛtē with fine covering, citramālyōpaśōbhitē adorned with beautiful garlands, ramyē delightful, prāsādaśikharē on the top of a mansion, varāsanē on a fine seat, mansraiḥ with mantras, vividhaiḥ with various, vidhivat as per ritual, prāṅmukham him who was facing east, sthāpayitvā having made to sit, nadīnadēbhyaḥ from rivers and rivulets, samantataḥ all together, tīrthēbhyaśca from waters, apaḥ saṅhṛtya having collected, sarvēbhyaḥ from all, samudrēbhyaḥ ca and from oceans, vimalam pure, śubhā auspicious, kanakakumbhēṣu in golden pots, nidhāya having stored, vānararṣabhāḥ bulls among monkeys, gajaḥ Gaja, gavākṣaḥ Gavaksha, gavayaḥ Gavaya, śarabhā Sarabha, gandhamādana Gandhamadana, dvividaścaiva and Dvivida, maindaśca Mainda and, hanūmān Hanuman, nala Nala, tathā so also, jāmbavān Jambavan, prasannēna with pure, sugandhinā fragrant, salilēna water, śāstradṛṣṭēna according to sastras, maharṣi vihitēna ca aportioned according to the procedure ordained by sages, vidhinā as per tradition, śubhaiḥ with auspicious, vṛṣabhaśṛṅgaiśca through horns of bulls, kāñcanaiḥ with golden, kalaśaiścaiva pots, vasavaḥ Vasus, sahasrākṣam Indra, vāsavaṅ yathā like the Indra, abhyaṣiñcanta performed the consecration.

Then Sugriva was seated facing the east on a golden throne with fine coverings on top of the mansion decorated with multi-coloured garlands. As per tradition, sacred waters collected from rivers and rivulets and stored in golden pots was aportioned in accordance with the procedure ordained by the sages in sastras. At the appropriate time the pure and fragrant water was poured by Gaja, Gavaya, Sarabha, Mainda, Dvivida, Hanumanta, Jambavan and Nala on Sugriva, the bull among monkeys through horns of bulls and jars of gold, like the eight Vasus bathed the thousand-eyed Indra. Thus they performed the consecration.
abhiṣiktē tu sugrīvē sarvē vānarapuṅgavāḥ.

pracukruśurmahātmānō hṛṣṭā statra sahasraśaḥ 4.26.37৷৷


sugrīvē as Sugriva, abhiṣiktē was consecrated, sahasraśaḥ in thousands, sarvē all, tatra there, mahātmānaḥ great, vānarapuṅgavāḥ leaders among monkeys, hṛṣṭāḥ rejoiced, pracukruśuḥ shrieked out of joy.

As Sugriva was ceremoniously consecrated, thousands of monkeys rejoiced and shrieked out of joy.
rāmasya tu vacaḥ kurvansugrīvō haripuṅgavaḥ.

aṅgadaṅ sampariṣvajya yauvarājyē.bhyaṣēcayat4.26.38৷৷


haripuṅgavaḥ lord of monkeys, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, rāmasya Rama's, vacaḥ words, kurvan obeying, aṅgadam Angada, sampariṣvajya embraced, yauvarājyē prince regent, abhyaṣēcayat consecrated.

In obedience to Rama's instruction, Sugriva, lord of the monkeys installed Angada as prince regent and embraced him.
aṅgadē cābhiṣiktē tu sānukrōśāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ.

sādhu sādhviti sugrīvaṅ mahātmānō.bhyapūjayan4.26.39৷৷


aṅgadē ca when Angada also, abhiṣiktē tu on his consecration, sānukrōśāḥ those who were concerned, mahātmānaḥ great souls, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, sādhu sādhu well done, well done, iti thus, sugrīvam Sugriva, abhyapūjayan greeted with reverence.

The great monkeys concerned hailed Sugriva's action saying, 'well done, well done' on the installation of Angada.
rāmaṅ caiva mahātmānaṅ lakṣmaṇaṅ ca punaḥ punaḥ.

prītāśca tuṣṭuvussarvē tādṛśē tatra vartitē4.26.40৷৷


tatra there, tādṛśē on such an occasion, vartitē when it happened, sarvē all, prītāśca pleased, mahātmānam great soul, rāmaṅ caiva Rama also, lakṣmaṇaṅ ca and Lakshmana, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, tuṣṭuvuḥ praised.

As Sugriva and Angada were installed, all the monkeys were highly pleased and praised the noble-hearted Rama and Lakshmana again and again.
hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇā patākādhvajaśōbhitā.

babhūva nagarī ramyā kiṣkindhā girigahvarē4.26.41৷৷


girigahvarē in the mountain cavern, patākādhvajaśōbhitā decorated with banners and flags, ramyā beautiful, kiṣkindhānagarī city of Kishkinda, hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇā filled with happy welfare citizens, babhūva it looked.

The beautiful city of Kishkinda situated in a mountain-cave, decorated with banners and flags was filled with happy, well-fed citizens.
nivēdya rāmāya tadā mahātmanē

mahābhiṣēkaṅ kapivāhinīpatiḥ.

rumāṅ ca bhāryaṅ pratilabhya vīryavā-

navāpa rājyaṅ tridaśādhipō yathā4.26.42৷৷


tadā then, vīryavān valiant, kapivāhinīpatiḥ leader of the monkey army, mahātmanē to the great, rāmāya to Rama, mahābhiṣēkam the great installation, nivēdya having reported, bhāryām wife, rumāṅ ca Ruma also, pratilabhya after meeting, tridaśādhipō yathā like Indra, rājyam kingdom, avāpa secured.

The valiant leader of the monkey army (Sugriva) reported to great Rama about the installation.Having secured the kingdom and his wife Ruma, Sugriva also felt like Indra (who secured the kingdom of gods).
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkinthākāṇḍē ṣaḍviṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the twentysixth sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic, composed by sage Valmiki.
