[Lakshmana speaks to Hanuman the purpose of their arrival at Rishyamuka --- Hanuman takes Rama and Lakshmana on his shoulders to Sugriva]

tataḥ prahṛṣṭau hanumānkṛtyavāniti tadvacaḥ.

śrutvā madhurasambhāṣaṅ sugrīvaṅ manasā gataḥ4.4.1৷৷


tataḥ then, kṛtyavān who has done his duty, hanumān Hanuman, iti thus, tadvacaḥ his words, śrutvā having heard, madhurasambhāṣaṅ ca and sweet talk, prahṛṣṭaḥ glad, manasā at heart, sugrīvam to Sugriva, gataḥ about

After listening to the sweet words of Lakshmana, Hanuman, having done what he had to do felt happy and thought of Sugriva.
bhavyō rājyāgamastasya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ.

yadayaṅ kṛtyavānprāptaḥ kṛtyaṅ caitadupāgatam4.4.2৷৷


mahātmanaḥ great self, tasya sugrīvasya that Sugriva's, rājyāgamaḥ acquisition of kingdom, bhavyaḥ is likely to happen, yat since, kṛtyavān one who has done his duty, ayam this, prāptaḥ got, ētat this, kṛtaṅ ca and has work, upāgatam has come

The great Sugriva, thinks Hanuman, who had done his duty is likely to acquire his kingdom, because great Rama who would help in the work of Sugriva has also come.'
tataḥ paramasaṅhṛṣṭō hanumān plavagarṣabhaḥ.

pratyuvāca tatō vākyaṅ rāmaṅ vākyaviśāradaḥ4.4.3৷৷


tataḥ then, paramasaṅhṛṣṭaḥ extremely happy, plavagōttamaḥ best of monkeys, hanumān Hanuman, tataḥ then,vākyaviśāradam learned in converasation, rāmam Rama's, vākyam words, pratyuvāca enquired

Hanuman, the best of the monkeys, learned in conversation, felt extremely happy and enquired from Rama:
kimirthaṅ tvaṅ vanaṅ ghōraṅ pampākānanamaṇḍitam.

āgatassānujō durgaṅ nānāvyāḷamṛgāyutam4.4.4৷৷


sānujaḥ accompanied by your brother, pampākānanamaṇḍitam woods surrounding Pampa, durgam inaccessible, nānāvyālamṛgāyutam full of different kinds of serpents and wild animals, ghōram dreadful, vanam forest, kimartham why, āgataḥ came here?

'Why have you come with your brother to this dreadful, inaccessible forest surrounding Pampa, full of different varieties of serpents and wild animals?'
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā lakṣmaṇō rāmacōditaḥ.

ācacakṣē mahātmānaṅ rāmaṅ daśarathātmajam4.4.5৷৷


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, tasya his, tat those, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, rāmacōditaḥ urged by Rama, mahātmānam great soul, daśarathātmajam son of Dasaratha, rāmam Rama, ācacakṣē narrated

Having listened to Hanuman, and urged by Rama, Lakshmana told him about the great Rama, son of Dasaratha.
rājā daśarathō nāma dyutimāndharmavatsalaḥ.

cāturvarṇyaṅ svadharmēṇa nityamēvābhyapālayat4.4.6৷৷


dyutimān brilliant, dharmavatsalaḥ lover of dharma, cāturvarṇyam four classes, nityamēva always, svadharmēṇa his duty, abhyapālayat ruled, daśarathō nāma named Dasaratha, rājā king

na dvēṣṭā vidyatē tasya na ca sa dvēṣṭi kañcana.

sa ca sarvēṣu bhūtēṣu pitāmaha ivāparaḥ4.4.7৷৷

agniṣṭōmādibhiryajñairiṣṭavānāptadakṣiṇaiḥ.


tasya his, dvēṣṭā enemy, na vidyatē never existed, saḥ he, kañcana any one indeed, na dvēṣṭi not hated, saḥ he, sarvēṣu at all, bhūtēṣu beings, aparaḥ another, pitāmahaḥ iva like the father, āptadakṣiṇaiḥ with generous gifts, agniṣṭōmādibhiḥ with fire sacrifices and others, yajñaiḥ with yajnas, iṣṭavān performed.

'He never hated any one nor did any one ever hate him. To all his subjects, he was like another father, the Creator Brahma. And he was generous in giving gifts while performing yajnas (rituals with fire) like Agnistoma.
tasyāyaṅ pūrvajaḥ putrō rāmō nāma janaiḥ śrutaḥ৷৷4.4.8৷৷

śaraṇyassarvabhūtānāṅ piturnirdēśapāragaḥ.


ayam this is, tasya his, pūrvajaḥ elder, putraḥ son, rāmō nāma by name Rama, janaiḥ by people, śrutaḥ popular, sarvabhūtānām at all beings, śaraṇyaḥ protector, pituḥ father's, nirdēśapāragaḥ one who never fails to follow instructions.

'Here is his eldest son, popularly known as Rama. He is the protector of all beings and never failed his father's instructions.
vīrō daśarathasyāyaṅ putrāṇāṅ guṇavattamaḥ৷৷4.4.9৷৷

rājalakṣaṇasampannassamyuktō rājasampadā.

rājyādbhraṣṭō vanē vastuṅ mayā sārdhamihāgataḥ4.4.10৷৷


daśarathasya Dasaratha's, putrāṇām among sons, vīraḥ warrior, guṇavattamaḥ most virtuous, rājalakṣaṇasaṅyuktaḥ endowed with royal traits, rājyasampadā with royal wealth, saṅyuktaḥ he is
endowed with, ayam this one, rājyāt from kingdom, bhraṣṭaḥ is sent away, vanē in the forest, vastum to reside, mayā sārdham along with me, iha here, āgataḥ has come

bhāryayā ca mahātējāssītayā.nugatō vaśī.

dinakṣayē mahātējāḥ prabhayēva divākaraḥ4.4.11৷৷


mahātējāḥ glorious one, vaśī self-controlled, dinakṣayē at the end of the day, divākaraḥ Sun, prabhayēva with radiance, bhāryayā with wife, sītayā with Sita, anugataḥ followed

'This glorious Rama was followed by his wife, Sita, like the rays of the effulgent Sun follow him to the end of the day.
ahamasyāvarō bhrātā guṇairdāsyamupāgataḥ.

kṛtajñasya bahujñasya lakṣmaṇō nāma nāmataḥ4.4.12৷৷


aham I am, kṛtajñasya of the grateful man, bahujñasya of a well-versed man, asya his, guṇaiḥ by virtues, dāsyam servitude, upāgataḥ has accepted, avaraḥ younger, bhrātā brother, nāmataḥ name, lakṣmaṇō nāma called Lakshmana

'I am his younger brother, called Lakshmana. I have accepted the service of this learned, virtuous and grateful man.
sukhārhasya mahārhasya sarvabhūtahitātmanaḥ.

aiśvaryēṇa ca hīnasya vanavāsāśritasya ca4.4.13৷৷

rakṣasā.pahṛtā bhāryā rahitē kāmarūpiṇā.

tacca na jñāyatē rakṣaḥ patnī yēnāsya sā hṛtā4.4.14৷৷


sukhārhasya deserved comforts, mahārhasya worthy of reverence, sarvabhūtahitātmanaḥ well-wisher of all beings, aiśvaryēṇa by wealth, vihīnasya deprived, vanavāsē dwelling in the forest, ratasya of a man engaged, bhāryā wife, rahitē when we were not present2 2sā she, kāmarūpiṇā who can assume any form at will, rakṣasā by a demon, apahṛtā kidnapped, yēna vā or by whomsoever, asya his, bhāryā wife, hṛtā has been stolen, tat that, rakṣaḥ rakshasa, na jñāyatē is not known

'This man who should have lived in comfort and in reverence, one who was worthy of all the well-wishers lost his wealth and was banished into the forest. He is now deprived of his wife kidnapped by an unknown demon who could assume any form at will.
danurnāma ditēḥ putraśśāpādrākṣasatāṅ gataḥ.

ākhyātastēna sugrīvassamarthō vānararṣabhaḥ4.4.15৷৷


ditēḥ Diti's, putraḥ a son, śāpāt by curse, rākṣasatām as a demon, gataḥ became, danuḥ nāma called Danu, tēna by him, vānararṣabhaḥ the bull among monkeys, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, samarthaḥ capable, ākhyātaḥ had said

'Diti's son called Danu who had been cursed to live the life of a demon had said that Sugriva, the best among monkeys, would be able to locate her.
sa jñāsyati mahāvīryastava bhāryāpahāriṇam.

ēvamuktvā danussvargaṅ bhrājamānō gatassukham4.4.16৷৷


mahāvīryaḥ valiant one, saḥ he, tava your, bhāryāpahāriṇam who has stolen your wife, jñāsyati will know, danuḥ Danu, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, bhrājamānaḥ glowing away, svargam heaven, sukham happily, gataḥ went

'That Valiant Sugriva can spot the demon who has abducted your wife', said Danu and disappeared happily into heaven shining in brilliance.
ētattē sarvamākhyātaṅ yathā tathyēna pṛcchataḥ.

ahaṅ caiva hi rāmaśca sugrīvaṅ śaraṇaṅ gatau4.4.17৷৷


pṛcchataḥ since you asked, tē you, ētat that, sarvam every event, yathā tathyēna in fact, ākhyātam said, ahaṅ caiva and I also, rāmaśca Rama too, sugrīvam Sugriva's, śaraṇam refuge, gatau both arrived

'I have given a factual account of everything, since you asked me. Now Rama and I have arrived seeking Sugriva's shelter.
ēṣa dattvā ca vittāni prāpya cānuttamaṅ yaśaḥ.

lōkanāthaḥ purā bhūtvā sugrīvaṅ nāthamicchati4.4.18৷৷


ēṣaḥ this person, vittāni wealth, dattvā ca and gifting , anuttamam excellence ,yaśaḥ fame, prāpya ca having obtained, purā earlier, lōkanāthaḥ lord of the world, sugrīvam Sugriva, nātham king, icchati wishes

'Having earned supreme fame through his munificence in the past, this lord of the world now craves Sugriva's indulgence.
pitā yasya purā hyāsīccharaṇyō dharmavatsalaḥ.

tasya putraśśaraṇyaśca sugrīvaṅ śaraṇaṅ gataḥ4.4.19৷৷


purā earlier, yasya whose, dharmavatsalaḥ lover of dharma, pitā father, śaraṇyaḥ refuge to others, āsīt he was, śaraṇyaśca refuge of, tasya his, putraḥ son, sugrīvam to Sugriva, śaraṇaṅ gataḥ seeks protection

'One whose father was once a protector of dharma, a refuge to all now seeks Sugriva's shelter.
sarvalōkasya dharmātmā śaraṇyaśśaraṇaṅ purā.

gururmē rāghavassō.yaṅ sugrīvaṅ śaraṇaṅ gataḥ4.4.20৷৷


dharmātmā righteous, śaraṇyaḥ protector, purā earlier, sarvalōkasya for the whole world, to all (his) people śaraṇam protector, guruḥ respectable, saḥ he, ayam this person, rāghavaḥ Rama, sugrīvam Sugriva's, śaraṇaṅ gataḥ sought protection

'This righteous Rama who used to lend in the past protection to the whole world and, indeed, a refuge to all, venerable sir, now seeks Sugriva's shelter.
yasya prasādē satataṅ prasīdēyurimāḥ prajāḥ.

sa rāmō vānarēndrasya prasādamabhikāṅkṣatē. 4.4.21৷৷


yasya whose, prasādē grace, imāḥ these, prajāḥ people, satatam always, prasīdēyuḥ they will be pleased, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, vānarēndrasya chief of monkeys', prasādam favour, abhikāṅkṣatē is desiring

'This Rama for whose grace the subjects were ever bobolden to him now seeks the favour of the Chief of monkeys.
yēna sarvaguṇōpētāḥ pṛthivyāṅ sarvapārthivāḥ.

mānitāssatataṅ rājñā sadā daśarathēna vai4.4.22

tasyāyaṅ pūrvajaḥ putrastriṣu lōkēṣu viśrutaḥ.

sugrīvaṅ vānarēndraṅ tu rāmaśśaraṇamāgataḥ4.4.23৷৷


rājñā by the king, yēna by whom, daśarathēna by Dasaratha, pṛthivyām on this earth, sarvaguṇōpētāḥ endowed with all virtues, sarvapārthivāḥ all kings, sadā always, satatam ever, mānitāḥ honoured, tasya his, pūrvajaḥ eldest, putraḥ son, triṣu lōkēṣu in the three worlds, viśrutaḥ very famous, ayaṅ rāmaḥ such Rama, vānarēndram lord of monkeys, sugrīvam Sugriva, śaraṇamāgataḥ sought refuge

'Famous in all the three worlds, this Rama, who was the firsh-born of Dasaratha, endowed with all virtues and ever respected by all the kings of this earth, now seeks shelter of Sugriva, Chief of monkeys.
śōkābhibhūtē rāmē tu śōkārtē śaraṇaṅ gatē.

kartumarhati sugrīvaḥ prasādaṅ hariyūdhapaḥ4.4.24৷৷


hariyūdhapa: lord of monkeys, śōkābhibhūtē one who is overcome by grief, śōkārtē one who is pained by sorrow, śaraṇaṅ gatē when he sought refuge, rāmē to Rama, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, prasādam favour kartum to render, arhati deserves

'Sugriva, lord of monkeys, ought to help Rama who tormented by, and overwhelmed with, grief seeks his favour.'
ēvaṅ bruvāṇaṅ saumitriṅ karuṇaṅ sāśrulōcanam.

hanumānpratyuvācēdaṅ vākyaṅ vākyaviśāradaḥ4.4.25৷৷


karuṇam piteously, sāśrulōcanam eyes filled with tears, ēvam that way, bruvāṇam while speaking, saumitrim to Saumithri, vākyaviśāradaḥ an erudite speaker, hanumān Hanuman, idam these, vākyam words, pratyuvāca replied back

To Saumitri who was speaking thus in a piteous tone, his eyes filled with tears the eloquent Hanuman replied:
īdṛśā buddhisampannā jitakrōdhā jitēndriyāḥ.

draṣṭavyā vānarēndrēṇa diṣṭyā darśanamāgatāḥ4.4.26৷৷


buddhisampannāḥ highly intelligent, jitakrōdhāḥ who have conquered anger, jitēndriyāḥ who have 2 2conquered senses, diṣṭyā luckily, darśanam to see, āgatāḥ came here, īdṛśāḥ such men, vānarēndrēṇa by king of vanaras, draṣṭavyā deserve to be approached

'It is a matter of great fortune that you who have intelligence, control over your senses and conquered anger have come to see the lord of monkeys who needs instead, to approach you.
sa hi rājyātparibhraṣṭaḥ kṛtavairaśca vālinā.

hṛtadārō vanē tyaktō bhrātrā vinikṛtō bhṛśam4.4.27৷৷


vālinā by Vali, kṛtavairaḥ developed enmity, bhrātrā by his brother, hṛtadāraḥ deprived of his wife, bhṛśam strongly, vinikṛtaḥ is offended, rājyāt from the kingdom, vibhraṣṭaḥ thrown out, saḥ he, tyakta: is abandoned, vanē in the forest

'(In fact) seriously offended by his brother Vali who treated him like his enemy and expelled him from the kingdom. He is now abandoned in the forest, his wife hijacked.
kariṣyati sa sāhāyyaṅ yuvayōrbhāskarātmajaḥ.

sugrīvassaha cāsmābhi ssītāyāḥ parimārgaṇē4.4.28৷৷


bhāskarātmajaḥ son of the Sun-god, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, asmābhiḥ saha along with us, sītāyāḥ Sita's, parimārgaṇē in search of, yuvayōḥ for both of you, sāhāyyam help, kariṣyati he will do

'Sugriva, son of the Sun-god, along with us will extend all help to you, in your search for Sita.'
ityēvamuktvā hanumān ślakṣṇaṅ madhurayā girā.

babhāṣē sō.bhigacchēma sugrīvamiti rāghavam4.4.29৷৷


hanumān Hanuman, madhurayā sweetly, girā with words, ityēvam like that, ślakṣṇam gently, uktvā having said, sādhu well done, sugrīvam to Sugriva, abhigacchēma we will go, iti thus, rāghavam Raghava, babhāṣē spoke

Hanuman, having spoken with sweet, gentle words said to the Raghavas, 'We will now go to Sugriva'.
ēvaṅ bruvāṇaṅ dharmātmā hanumantaṅ sa lakṣmaṇaḥ.

pratipūjya yathānyāyamidaṅ prōvāca rāghavam4.4.30৷৷


dharmātmā righteous, saḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ that Lakshmana, ēvam in that way, bruvāṇam as he spoke, hanumantam to Hanuman, yathānyāyam as per tradition, pratipūjya offered salutation, rāghavam Raghava, idam this, prōvāca spoke

Having offered reverential salutations to Hanuman as per tradition, righteous Lakshmana now spoke to Rama:
kapiḥ kathayatē hṛṣṭō yathā.yaṅ mārutātmajaḥ.

kṛtyavāṅtsō.pi samprāptaḥ kṛtakṛtyō.si rāghava!4.4.31৷৷


rāghava Rama, mārutātmajaḥ son of the wind-god, ayaṅ kapiḥ this monkey, hṛṣṭaḥ a pleased one, yathā as, kathayatē he is telling, sō.pi he also, kṛtyavān a person of action, samprāptaḥ has come, kṛtakṛtyaḥ accomplished, asi you are

'O Raghava! this monkey, son of the Wind-god appears pleased as evident from his words. As he is a man of action, take your work as accomplished now.
prasannamukhavarṇaśca vyaktaṅ hṛṣṭaśca bhāṣatē.

nānṛtaṅ vakṣyatē vīrō hanumānmārutātmajaḥ4.4.32৷৷


vyaktam it is evident, prasannamukhavarṇaśca he has a cheerful face, hṛṣṭaśca he is pleased, bhāṣatē words, mārutātmajaḥ son of the wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, anṛtam lie, na vakṣyatē will not tell

'It is evident from his words and from his cheerful face that Hanuman is pleased. (I know that) this heroic son of the Wind-god will never tell a lie'.
tatassa tu mahāprājñō hanumānmārutātmajaḥ.

jagāmādāya tau vīrau harirājāya rāghavau4.4.33৷৷


tataḥ then, mahāprājñaḥ very wise, mārutātmajaḥ son of the wind-god, saḥ hanumān that Hanuman, vīrau warrior heroes, tau rāghavau both Raghavas, harirājāya to the king of monkeys, ādāya
led them, jagāma went

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god, endowed with great wisdom carried both the Raghava warriors to the king of monkeys.
bhikṣurūpaṅ parityajya vānaraṅ rūpamāsthitaḥ.

pṛṣṭhamārōpya tau vīrau jagāma kapikuñjaraḥ4.4.34৷৷


kapikuñjaraḥ elephant-like monkey, bhikṣurūpam form of a mendicant, parityajya gave up, vānaram monkeys, rūpam form, āsthitaḥ assumed, tau both, vīrau heroes, pṛṣṭham on the back, ārōpya lifted, jagāma proceeded.

Hanuman, who was an elephant among monkeys, gave up the guise of a mendicant, and assuming the form of the monkeys, lifted both the heroes on to his back and proceeded.
sa tu vipulayaśāḥ kapipravīraḥ

pavanasutaḥ kṛtakṛtyavatprahṛṣṭaḥ.

girivaramuruvikramaḥ prayāta-

ssa śubhamatissaha rāmalakṣmaṇābhyām4.4.35৷৷


vipulayaśāḥ highly renowned, kapipravīraḥ most heroic monkey, saḥ pavanasutaḥ son of the wind-god, kṛtakṛtyavat having done his duty, prahṛṣṭaḥ gladly, śubhamatiḥ with auspicious feeling, uruvikramaḥ renowned for his valiance, saḥ he, rāmalakṣmaṇābhyāṅ saha with Rama and Lakshmana, girivaram to the great mountain, prayātaḥ departed.

The son of the Wind-god, the most valiant, the supremely heroic monkey and the one well-admired, having performed his task, felt immensely happy.And with an auspicious feeling, departed for the great mountain (Rishyamuka) along with Rama and Lakshmana.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkiṅdhākāṇḍē caturthassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fourth sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
