[Return of Satavali, Vinata and Sushena with no news of Sita.]

darśanārthaṅ tu vaidēhyāssarvataḥ kapiyūdhapāḥ.

vyādiṣṭāḥ kapirājēna yathōktaṅ jagmurañjasā৷৷4.47.1৷৷


kapirājēna by the king of monkeys, vyādiṣṭāḥ commanded, kapiyūdhapāḥ leaders of vanara troops, yathōktam as instructed, vaidēhyāḥ Vaidehi's, darśanārtham to look for, añjasā swiftly, sarvataḥ all directions, jagmuḥ went.

The leaders of vanara troops went fast in all directions to look for Vaidehi following the instructions of the king of vanaras.
sarāṅsi sarita kākṣānākāśaṅ nagarāṇi ca.

nadīdurgāṅstathā śailānvicinvanti samantataḥ৷৷4.47.2৷৷


tē they, sarāṅsi tanks, sarita: kakṣān bottom of rivers, ākāśam sky, nagarāṇi ca and towns, tathā similarly, nadīdurgān forts surrounded by rivers, śailān mountains, samantataḥ every where, vicinvanti looking for.

They went looking everywhere in the tanks, in the bottom of rivers, in towns, in the sky and similarly in inaccessible rivers, mountains, and forts surrounded by rivers.
sugrīvēṇa samākhyātāssarvē vānarayūthapāḥ.

pradēśānpravicinvanti saśailavanakānanān৷৷4.47.3৷৷


sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, samākhyātāḥ instructed, sarvē all, vānarayūthapāḥ vanara troop leaders, saśailavanakānanān including forests and mountains, pradēśān places, vicinvanti searched.

The troop leaders of the monkeys instructed by Sugriva searched in all places
including mountains and forests.
vicitya divasaṅ sarvē sītādhigamanē dhṛtāḥ.

samāyānti sma mēdinyāṅ niśākālēṣu vānarāḥ৷৷4.47.4৷৷


sarvē all, vānarāḥ monkeys, sītādhigamanē in search of Sita, dhṛtāḥ determined, divasam all day, vicitya after searching, niśākālēṣu during nights also, mēdinyām on the ground, samāyānti sma used to meet one another.

The monkeys used to search for Sita all day determinedly and at night assemble at one place.
sarvartukamān dēśēṣu vānārāssaphaladrumān.

āsādya rajanīṅ śayyāṅ cakrussarvēṣvahassu tē৷৷4.47.5৷৷


tē vānarāḥ those monkeys, sarvēṣu ahassu all day, sarvartukāmān in all seasons, saphaladrumān fruit-bearing trees, dēśēṣu in countries, āsādya having reached, rajanīm in the night, śayyām resting place, cakruḥ they made.

The monkeys would search all day and by night reach for rest the branches of the trees that bear fruits in all seasons.
tadahaḥ prathamaṅ kṛtvā māsē praśravaṇaṅ gatāḥ.

kapirājēna saṅgamya nirāśāḥ kapiyūdhapāḥ৷৷4.47.6৷৷


tat ahaḥ that day, prathamam first, kṛtvā having passed off, māsē in the month, kapiyūdhapāḥ monkey leaders, nirāśāḥ disappointed, prasravaṇam mountain Prasravana, gatāḥ gone, kapirājēna by the king of vanaras, saṅgamya after meeting.

The monkey leaders thus spent a month doing what they did daily and returning disappointed, met the monkey king on mount Prasravana.
vicitya tu diśaṅ pūrvāṅ yathōktāṅ sacivaissaha.

adṛṣṭvā vinatassītāmājagāma mahābalaḥ৷৷4.47.7৷৷


mahābalaḥ powerful, vinataḥ Vinata, sacivaiḥ saha along with the ministers, yathōktām as instructed, pūrvāṅ diśam eastern side, vicitya having searched, sītām Sita, adṛṣṭvā not able to see, ājagāma returned.

Having searched for Sita as instructed by Sugriva, powerful Vinita returned along with the ministers unable to find Sita.
uttarāṅ ca diśaṅ sarvāṅ vicitya sa mahākapiḥ.

āgatassaha sainyēna vīraśśatavalistadā৷৷4.47.8৷৷


tadā then, vīraḥ hero, mahākapiḥ great monkey, śatabalaḥ Satabala, sainyēna saha with the army, sarvām all, uttarāṅ diśam northern direction, vicitya after searching, āgataḥ came back.

Then the great monkey hero Satabali came back from the northern direction along with the army after searching in vain for Sita.
suṣēṇaḥ paścimā māśāṅ vicitya saha vānaraiḥ.

samētya māsē sampūrṇē sugrīvamupacakramē৷৷4.47.9৷৷


suṣēṇaḥ Sushena, vānaraissaha along with the monkeys, paścimām āśām western side, vicitya having searched, māsē in a month, sampūrṇē when completed, samētya after coming back, sugrīvam Sugriva, upacakramē reported.

Sushena searched for a full month in the western quarter along with the monkeys and returned to report to Sugriva.
taṅ prasravaṇapṛṣṭhasthaṅ samāsādyābhivādya ca.

āsīnaṅ saha rāmēṇa sugrīvamidamabravīt৷৷4.47.10৷৷


rāmēṇa saha along with Rama, āsīnam seated, prasravaṇapṛṣṭhastham on the Prasravana mountain, sugrīvam Sugriva, āsādya came near, abhivādya ca and offered salutations, idam thus, abravīt spoke.

Sushena came to Sugriva, seated with Rama at Prasravana mountain, offered salutations and spoke:
vicitāḥ parvatāssarvē vanāni gahanāni ca.

nimnagāssāgarāntāśca sarvē janapadāśca yē৷৷4.47.11৷৷


sarvē all, parvatāḥ mountains, vicitāḥ are searched, gahanāni inacccessible, vanāni ca forests also, nimnagāḥ rivers, sāgarāntāśca in the seas, yē those, janapadāśca country side, sarvē every where.

'We searched for her in the mountains, in inaccessible forests, in rivers and seas and also the countryside.
guhāśca vicitāssarvāstvayā yāḥ parikīrtitāḥ.

vicitāśca mahāgulmā latāvitatasantatāḥ৷৷4.47.12৷৷


sarvāḥ all, tvayā by your, parikīrtitāḥ mentioned, yāḥ those, guhāḥ caves, vicitāḥ searched, latāvitatasantatāḥ filled with extensive vines, mahāgulmāḥ and huge bushes, vicitāḥ are searched.

'We searched for her in the caves, in places filled with extensive vines and huge bushes and in all places mentioned by you.
gahanēṣu ca dēśēṣu durgēṣu viṣamēṣu ca.

sattvānyatipramāṇāni vicitāni hatāni ca৷৷4.47.13৷৷

yē caiva gahanā dēśā vicitāstē punaḥ punaḥ.


gahanēṣu in the interiors, durgēṣu inaccessible, viṣamēṣu ca and unevenplaces, dēśēṣu locations, atipramāṇāni very huge, sattvāni beings, vicitāni searched, hatāni ca killed, gahanāḥ difficult interiors, yē those, dēśāḥ places, tē those, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, vicitāḥ searched.

'We searched again and again the interior, inaccessible and uneven locations,and killed huge animals. We searched in regions difficult to penetrate.
udārasattvābhijanō mahātmā

sa maithilīṅ drakṣyati vānarēndraḥ.

diśaṅ tu yāmēva gatā tu sītā

tāmāsthitōvāyusutō hanūmān৷৷4.47.14৷৷


vānarēndra O king of monkeys, udārasattvābhijanaḥ exhalted by strength and birth, saḥ that, mahātmā great person, maithilīm Maithili, drakṣyati will see, sītā sita, yām ēva whichever, diśam direction, gatā is taken, tām that, vāyusutaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, āsthitaḥ he has set out.

'O king of monkeys! we hope, his exhalted highness, the mighty vanara, son of the Wind-god, Hanuman has gone in the direction in which Maithili has been carried off. He alone will find Sita and come back.'
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē saptacatvāriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fortyseventh sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
