[Hanuman makes a thorough search of Ravana's palace for Sita.]

స తస్య మధ్యే భవనస్య మారుతి-

ర్లతాగృహాంశ్చిత్రగృహాన్నిశాగృహాన్.

జగామ సీతాం ప్రతి దర్శనోత్సుకో

న చైవ తాం పశ్యతి చారుదర్శనామ్৷৷5.12.1৷৷


సః మారుతిః Maruti, తస్య of that, భవనస్య mansion's, మధ్యే midst, సీతాం ప్రతి towards Sita, దర్శనోత్సుకః with eagerness to find, లతాగృహాన్ homes of creepers, చిత్రగృహాన్ picture galleries, నిశాగృహాన్ dormitories for rest at night, జగామ went, చారుదర్శనామ్ beautiful lady, తామ్ that Sita, న చైవ పశ్యతి did not find her.

Anxious to find Sita, Hanuman revisited the bowers of creepers, picture galleries and domitories located in the midst of the mansion, but did not find that beautiful Sita.
స చిన్తయామాస తతో మహాకపిః

ప్రియామపశ్యన్రఘునన్దనస్య తామ్.

ధ్రువం హి సీతా మ్రియతే యథా న మే

విచిన్వతో దర్శనమేతి మైథిలీ৷৷5.12.2৷৷


తతః then, సః మహాకపిః that great monkey, రఘునన్దనస్య Rama's, ప్రియామ్ beloved, తామ్ her, అపశ్యన్ while being unable to find, చిన్తయామాస started thinking, మైథిలీ Mythili, విచిన్వతః while searching, మే to me, యథా as, దర్శనమ్ her sight, న ఉపైతి not appears, సీతా Sita, ధ్రువమ్ surely, మ్రియతే dead.

The great monkey, unable to find the beloved of Rama thought Sita might not be surviving. So he started thinking, ' I could not see her even though I have searched all
over'.
సా రాక్షసానాం ప్రవరేణ జానకీ

స్వశీలసంరక్ష్ణతత్పరా సతీ.

అనేన నూనం ప్రతి దుష్టకర్మణా

హతా భవేదార్యపథే పరే స్థితా৷৷5.12.3৷৷


పరే best, ఆర్యపథే on a noble path, స్థితా follower, సా జానకీ Janaki, స్వశీలసంరక్షణతత్పరా సతీ who wishes to protect her chastity, ప్రతి దుష్టకర్మణా by this evil mind, అనేన by him, రాక్షసానాం ప్రవరేణ by the demon king, హతా slayed, భవేత్ is, నూనమ్ surely.

'Janaki, follower of noble path, anxious to protect her chastity must have been killed by the wicked demon king.
విరూపరూపా వికృతా వివర్చసో

మహాననా దీర్ఘవిరూపదర్శనాః.

సమీక్ష్య సా రాక్షసరాజయోషితో

భయాద్వినష్టా జనకేశ్వరాత్మజా৷৷5.12.4৷৷


సా that, జనకేశ్వరాత్మజా daughter of king Janaka, విరూపరూపాః distorted forms, వికృతాః ugly, వివర్చసః dull, మహాననాః women with huge faces, దీర్ఘవిరూపదర్శనాః tall and deformed, రాక్షసరాజయోషితః wives of the demon king, సమీక్ష్య on looking, భయాత్ out of fear, వినష్టా died.

'The daughter of Janaka might have collapsed out of fear, looking at the distorted faces of ugly, tall and monstrous demon maids of Ravana.
సీతామదృష్ట్వా హ్యనవాప్య పౌరుషం

విహృత్య కాలం సహ వానరైశ్చిరమ్.

న మేస్తి సుగ్రీవసమీపగా గతిః

సుతీక్ష్ణదణ్డో బలవాంశ్చ వానరః৷৷5.12.5৷৷


సీతామ్ Sita, అదృష్ట్వా without seeing, పౌరుషమ్ pride of achievement, అనవాప్య without achieving, వానరైః సహ accompanied by vanaras, చిరం కాలమ్ for a long time, విహృత్య having passed time, మే to myself, సుగ్రీవసమీపగా to approach Sugriva, గతిః way, నాస్తి not possible, వానరః vanara, సుతీక్ష్ణదణ్డః will punish severely, బలవాంశ్చ powerful.

'I have spent a long time with vanaras. I have not succeded in my efforts to find Sita. I dare not see Sugriva now without finding Sita and without fulfilling my task. Sugriva will punish me severely. There is no way out.'
దృష్టమన్తఃపురం సర్వం దృష్టా రావణయోషితః.

న సీతా దృశ్యతే సాధ్వీవృథా జాతో మమ శ్రమః৷৷5.12.6৷৷


సర్వమ్ everywhere, అన్తఃపురమ్ the harem, దృష్టమ్ seen, రావణయోషితః Ravana's women, దృష్టాః are seen, సాధ్వీ noble lady, సీతా Sita, న దృశ్యతే is not seen, మమ my, శ్రమః efforts, వృథా wasted, జాతః gone.

'I have searched all over the harem. Ravana's women have been seen. (Yet) I have not been able to see noble Sita. My efforts have been wasted'.
కిం ను మాం వానరాః సర్వే గతం వక్ష్యన్తి సఙ్గతాః.

గత్వా తత్ర త్వయా వీర కిం కృతం తద్వదస్వ నః৷৷5.12.7৷৷


గతమ్ when I reach, మామ్ me, సఙ్గతాః together, సర్వే all, వానరాః vanaras, కిం ను what indeed, వక్ష్యన్తి they will speak, వీర O hero, తత్ర there, గత్వా after going, త్వయా by you, కిమ్ what, కృతమ్ is done, తత్ that, నః for us, వదస్వ you will say.

'What will the vanaras say when I return? What should I speak when they ask me: O hero, what did you accomplish there?'
అదృష్ట్వా కిం ప్రవక్ష్యామి తామహం జనకాత్మజామ్.

ధ్రువం ప్రాయముపైష్యన్తి కాలస్య వ్యతివర్తనే৷৷5.12.8৷৷


తామ్ her, జనకాత్మజామ్ Janaki, అదృష్టవా without seeing, కిమ్ what, ప్రవక్ష్యామి l am going to say, కాలస్య for a long time, వ్యతివర్తనే exceeded time limit, ధ్రువమ్ surely, ప్రాయమ్ ఉపైష్యన్తి they will sit down and wait until death.

'Since the time limit has exceeded and Janaki is not spotted, surely the vanaras would sit and wait unto death. What am I going to say'?
కిం వా వక్ష్యతి వృద్ధశ్చ జామ్బవానాఙ్గదశ్చ సః.

గతం పారం సముద్రస్య వానరాశ్చ సమాగతాః৷৷5.12.9৷৷


సముద్రస్య ocean's, పారమ్ other shore, గతమ్ on going, వృద్ధః elderly, జామ్బవాన్ Jambavan, కిం వా why or else, వక్ష్యతి will say, సః he, అఙ్గద: చ Angada also, సమాగతాః collecting together, వానరాశ్చ and vanaras.

'What will the elderly Jambavan say? What will young prince Angada and other vanaras collected there say when I reach the sea-shore to meet them'.
అనిర్వేదః శ్రియో మూలమనిర్వేదః పరం సుఖమ్.

అనిర్వేదో హి సతతం సర్వార్థేషు ప్రవర్తకః৷৷5.12.10৷৷


అనిర్వేదః being free from despair, శ్రియః prosperity, మూలమ్ cause, అనిర్వేదః being free from despondency, పరమ్ supreme, సుఖమ్ happiness, అనిర్వేదః being free from despair, సతతమ్ always, సర్వార్థేషు in all objectives, ప్రవర్తకః హి will lead the way.

Wise Hanuman once again declared, 'being free from despair is the root cause of prosperity. Freedom from despondency gives supreme happiness and leads to success'.
కరోతి సఫలం జన్తోః కర్మ యత్తత్కరోతి సః.

తస్మాదనిర్వేదకృతం యత్నం చేష్టేహముత్తమమ్৷৷5.12.11৷৷

భూయస్తావద్విచేష్యామి దేశాన్రావణపాలితాన్.


యత్ that, కర్మ action, కరోతి that he will do, జన్తోః of a living being, తత్ that, సఫలమ్ fruitful, సః he, కరోతి will do, తస్మాత్ therefore, అహమ్ I, అనిర్వేదకృతమ్ without experiencing despair, ఉత్తమమ్ best, ప్రయత్నమ్ effort, చేష్టే I act, అదృష్టాన్ not seen, రావణపాలితాన్ ruled by Ravana, దేశాన్ country, విచేష్యామి తావత్ search everywhere.

'The action of a living being certainly bears fruit. Therefore, I shall put forth my best effort without feeling despondent. I will once again search everywhere in Lanka ruled by Ravana'.
ఆపానశాలా విచితాస్తథా పుష్పగృహాణి చ৷৷5.12.12৷৷

చిత్రశాలాశ్చ విచితా భూయః క్రీడాగృహాణి చ.

నిష్కుటాన్తరరథ్యాశ్చ విమానాని చ సర్వశః৷৷5.12.13৷৷


పానశాలాః banquet halls, విచితాః searched, తథా so also, పుష్పగృహాణి చ bowers of creepers, చిత్రశాలాశ్చ picture galleries, విచితాః searched, భూయః further, క్రీడాగృహాణి చ and sports galleries, నిష్కుటాన్తరరథ్యాశ్చ paths through the gardens and mansions, female apartments, విమానాని చ of the chariot, సర్వశః everywhere.

'I have searched the banquet halls, bowers of creepers, picture galleries and gymnasiums. I have searched everywhere through the paths of gardens and mansions, harems and the Pushpaka chariot also.
ఇతి సఞ్చిన్త్య భూయోపి విచేతుముపచక్రమే.

భూమీగృహాంశ్చైత్యగృహాన్ గృహాతిగృహకానపి৷৷5.12.14৷৷


ఇతి thus, సఞ్చిన్త్య thinking over well, భూమీగృహాన్ underground cells, చైత్యగృహాన్ temples, గృహాతిగృహకానపి homes with many doorways also, భూయోపి once again, విచేతుమ్ to search,
ఉపచక్రమే he started.

Thinking thus, he started searching once again the basement cells, temples, homes within homes.
ఉత్పతన్నిష్పతంశ్చాపి తిష్ఠన్గచ్ఛన్ పునః పునః.

అపావృణ్వంశ్చ ద్వారాణి కవాటాన్యవఘాటయన్৷৷5.12.15৷৷

ప్రవిశన్నిష్పతంశ్చాపి ప్రపతన్నుత్పతన్నపి.

సర్వమప్యవకాశం స విచచార మహాకపిః৷৷5.12.16৷৷


సః మహాకపిః that great vanara, పునః పునః again and again, ఉత్పతన్ jumping, నిష్పతంశ్చాపి climbing down, తిష్ఠన్ standing, గచ్ఛన్ going, ద్వారాణి entrance, అపావృణ్వన్ opening, కవాటాని doors, అవఘాటయన్ crossing, ప్రవిశన్ entering, నిష్పతంశ్చాపి and coming out, ప్రపతన్ jumping down, ఉత్పతన్నపి climbing up, సర్వమ్ అపి and all over, అవకాశమ్ scope, విచచార searched.

The great vanara searched all over again and again jumping up and down, stopping for a while and moving, opening and closing doors, by crossing, entering and exiting, jumping up and down. Thus he moved about and searched whereever there was scope to search
చతురఙ్గులమాత్రోపి నావకాశః స విద్యతే.

రావణాన్తఃపురే తస్మిన్ యం కపిర్న జగామ సః৷৷5.12.17৷৷


తస్మిన్ in that, రావణాన్తఃపురే in Ravana's inner chambers, సః కపిః monkey, యమ్ where, న జగామ did not go, సః he, అవకాశః scope, చతురఙ్గులమాత్రోపి even four fingers of space, న not విద్యతే leaving.

Even a space of four fingers in the inner chambers of Ravana was not left out in his search for Sita.
ప్రాకారాన్తరరథ్యాశ్చ వేదికాశ్చైత్యసంశ్రయాః.

దీర్ఘికాః పుష్కరిణ్యశ్చ సర్వం తేనావలోకితమ్৷৷5.12.18৷৷


ప్రాకారాన్తరరథ్యాశ్చ lanes inside the boundaries, చైత్యసంశ్రయాః around shrines, వేదికాః altars, దీర్ఘికాః wells, పుష్కరిణ్యశ్చ tanks, సర్వమ్ everywhere, తేన by him, అవలోకితమ్ was seen.

He moved in the lanes inside the boundary walls, around the shrines, altars, wells and tanks whereever it was possible to look for.
రాక్షస్యో వివిధాకారా విరూపా వికృతాస్తథా.

దృష్టా హనుమతా తత్ర న తు సా జనకాత్మజా৷৷5.12.19৷৷


వివిధాకారాః of different types, విరూపాః ugly, తథా so also, వికృతాః deformed, రాక్షస్యః ogresses, తత్ర there, హనుమతా by Hanuman, దృష్టాః were seen, సా she, జనకాత్మజా తు daughter of Janaka, న not found.

Hanuman could see only ogresses of different types-ugly, deformed but could not find the daughter of Janaka.
రూపేణాప్రతిమా లోకే వరా విద్యాధరస్త్రియః.

దృష్టా హనుమతా తత్ర న తు రాఘవనన్దినీ৷৷5.12.20৷৷


రూపేణ in beauty, లోకే in the world, అప్రతిమాః incomparable, వరాః best, విద్యాధరస్త్రియః Vidyadhara women, తత్ర there, హనుమతా by Hanuman, దృష్టాః were seen, రాఘవనన్దినీ తు beloved of Raghava, న not find.

Hanuman could see even the women of vidyadharas who were matchless in beauty among women in the world but not Janaki the beloved of Raghava.
నాగకన్యా వరారోహాః పూర్ణచన్ర్దనిభాననాః.

దృష్టా హనుమతా తత్ర న తు సీతా సుమధ్యమా৷৷5.12.21৷৷


వరారోహాః lovely women with symmetrical limbs, పూర్ణచన్ర్దనిభాననాః moon-faced women, నాగకన్యాః daughters of nagas, తత్ర there, హనుమతా by Hanuman, దృష్టాః were seen, సుమధ్యమా a woman of lovely waist, సీతా తు Sita, న not found.

Hanuman could see there moon-faced daughters of nagas with charming limbs but not the slim-waisted Sita.
ప్రమథ్య రాక్షసేన్ద్రేణ నాగకన్యా బలాద్ధృతాః.

దృష్టా హనుమతా తత్ర న సా జనకనన్దినీ৷৷5.12.22৷৷


రాక్షసేన్ద్రేణ by the demon king, ప్రమథ్య defeating, బలాత్ forcefully, హృతాః abducted, నాగకన్యాః daughters of nagas, తత్ర there, హనుమతా by Hanuman, దృష్టాః seen, సా that, జనకనన్దినీ న not the delight of Janaka.

Hanuman saw the daghters of nagas kidnapped by Ravana forcibly after victory in war but not Sita, the delight of Janaka.
సోపశ్యంస్తాం మహాబాహుః పశ్యంశ్చాన్యా వరస్త్రియః.

విషసాద ముహుర్ధీమాన్ హనుమాన్ మారుతాత్మజః৷৷5.12.23৷৷


మహాబాహుః long-armed, ధీమాన్ wise one, మారుతాత్మజః son of the Wind god, సః హనుమాన్ Hanuman, తామ్ her, అపశ్యన్ while being unable to see, అన్యాః other, వరస్త్రియః great women, పశ్యన్ while seeing, ముహుః again, విషసాద was sorrowful.

The long-armed Hanuman, son of the Wind-god was able to see other great women but not Sita. So he became despondent.
ఉద్యోగం వానరేన్ద్రాణాం ప్లవనం సాగరస్య చ.

వ్యర్థం వీక్ష్యానిలసుతశ్చిన్తాం పునరుపాగమత్৷৷5.12.24৷৷


వానరేన్ద్రాణామ్ of the great vanara, ఉద్యోగమ్ effort, సాగరస్య ocean's, ప్లవనం చ in crossing, వ్యర్థమ్ wasted, వీక్ష్య after seeing that, అనిలసుతః son of the Wind-god, పునః again, చిన్తామ్ worry,
ఉపాగమత్ experienced.

The son of the Wind god, the great monkey realised the futility of his efforts in crossing the sea. He brooded again.
అవతీర్య విమానాచ్చ హనుమాన్ మారుతాత్మజః.

చిన్తాముపజగామాథ శోకోపహతచేతనః৷৷5.12.25৷৷


అథ now, మారుతాత్మజః son of the Wind-god, హనుమాన్ Hanuman, విమానాత్ from the aerial-chariot, అవతీర్య after descending, శోకోపహతచేతనః mind stricken with grief, చిన్తామ్ worry, ఉపజగామ he experienced.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god, came out of the aerial chariot, mind stricken with grief and started thinking again.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే ద్వాదశస్సర్గః.
Thus ends the twelfth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
