[Ravana comes to see Sita.]

తథా విప్రేక్ష్యమాణస్య వనం పుష్పితపాదపమ్.

విచిన్వతశ్చ వైదేహీం కించిచ్ఛేషా నిశాభవత్৷৷5.18.1৷৷


పుష్పితపాదపమ్ flowering trees, వనమ్ grove, తథా likewise, విప్రేక్ష్యమాణస్య of the observer, వైదేహీమ్ Vaidehi, విచిన్వతశ్చ while searching, నిశా night, కిఞ్చిచ్ఛేషా a small part, అభవత్ was left.

The night came to a close while Hanuman went searching and looking for Sita at Ashoka grove full of flowering trees.
షడఙ్గవేదవిదుషాం క్రతుప్రవరయాజినామ్.

శుశ్రావ బ్రహ్మఘోషాంశ్చ స విరాత్రే బ్రహ్మరక్షసామ్৷৷5.18.2৷৷


సః he, విరాత్రే at the end of the night, షడఙ్గవేదవిదుషామ్ of those who were knowledgeable of Vedas and its six auxillary branches of sciences, క్రతుప్రవరయాజినామ్ those who were experts in performing exalted sacrificial ceremonies, బ్రహ్మరక్షసామ్ of brahmins among demons, బ్రహ్మఘోషాన్ sounds of Vedas, శుశ్రావ heard.

At dawn sounds of recitation of Vedas and the six auxillary sciences, (i.e .grammar, prosody, etymology, phonetics, astronomy and the science of rituals) by the brahmins among demons well-versed in performing exalted sacrificial ceremonies were heard.
అథ మఙ్గలవాదిత్రశబ్దైః శ్రుతిమనోహరైః.

ప్రాబుధ్యత మహాబాహుర్దశగ్రీవో మహాబలః৷৷5.18.3৷৷


అథ at that time, మహాబాహుః strong-armed, మహాబలః powerful, దశగ్రీవః ten-necked one, శ్రుతిమనోహరైః with sounds delighting ears, మఙ్గలవాదిత్రశబ్దై: with auspicious sounds of musical instruments, ప్రాబుధ్యత was awakened.

By that time the strong-armed, powerful, ten-necked Ravana was awakened by the delightful sounds of auspicious musical instruments.
విబుధ్యతు యథాకాలం రాక్షసేన్ద్రః ప్రతాపవాన్.

స్రస్తమాల్యామ్బరధరో వైదేహీమన్వచిన్తయత్৷৷5.18.4৷৷


ప్రతాపవాన్ chivalrous person, రాక్షసేన్ద్రః lord of demons, యథాకాలమ్ at the usual time, విబుధ్య after waking , స్రస్తమాల్యామ్బరధరః with disarrayed garland and raiment, వైదేహీమ్ of Vaidehi, అన్వచిన్తయత్ thought.

The chivalrous lord of demons woke up as usual.His raiment and garland were still in disarray and he thought of Vaidehi.
భృశం నియుక్తస్తస్యాం చ మదనేన మదోత్కటః.

న స తం రాక్షసః కామం శశాకాత్మని గూహితుమ్৷৷5.18.5৷৷


తస్యాం at her, మదనేన on account of his passion, భృశమ్ exceedingly, నియుక్తః gripped, మదోత్కటః overwhelmed with intoxication, సః he, రాక్షసః demon, తం కామమ్ his passion, ఆత్మని in himself, గూహితుమ్ to hide, న శశాక was not able.

The demon king who was unable to hide his great passion and control his senses was drawn towards Sita, in his state of intoxication.
స సర్వాభరణైర్యుక్తో బిభ్రచ్ఛ్రియమనుత్తమామ్.

తాం నగైర్బహుభిర్జుష్టాం సర్వపుష్పఫలోపగైః৷৷5.18.6৷৷


సర్వాభరణైః with all ornaments, యుక్తః adorned with, అనుత్తమామ్ excellent, శ్రియమ్ splendour, బిభ్రత్ hearing, సః he, సర్వపుష్పఫలోపగైః filled with all kinds of flowers and fruits, బహుభిః with many, నగైః with trees, జుష్టామ్ flourishing, తామ్ such.

Adorned with all ornaments and glowing with excellent splendour he went through the
path filled with trees flourishing with all kinds of flowers and fruits.
వృతాం పుష్కరిణీభిశ్చ నానాపుష్పోపశోభితామ్.

సదా మదైశ్చ విహగైర్విచిత్రాం పరమాద్భుతామ్৷৷5.18.7৷৷


పుష్కరిణీభిః with ponds, వృతామ్ covered, నానాపుష్పోపశోభితామ్ beautiful with different kinds of flowers, సదా మదైః always elated, విహగైః with birds, విచిత్రామ్ colourful, పరమాద్భుతామ్ very wonderful.

Ponds covered with a variety of beautiful flowers and colourful birds always cheerful looked very wonderful.
ఈహామృగైశ్చ వివిధైర్జుష్టాం దృష్టిమనోహరైః.

వీధీః సంప్రేక్షమాణశ్చ మణికాఞ్చనతోరణాః৷৷5.18.8৷৷

నానామృగగణాకీర్ణాం ఫలైః ప్రపతితైర్వృతామ్.

అశోకవనికామేవ ప్రావిశత్సంతతద్రుమామ్৷৷5.18.9৷৷


మణికాఞ్చనతోరణాః gateways ornamented with gold and gems, వీథీః pathways, సమ్ప్రేక్షమాణశ్చ observing, దృష్టిమనోహరైః with those pleasant to see, వివిధైః with several, ఈహామృగైశ్చ with wolves, జుష్టామ్ occupies (with pleasure), నానామృగగణాకీర్ణామ్ filled with several kinds of animals herds, ప్రపతితైః dropped from the trees, ఫలైః with fruits, వృతామ్ surrounded, సన్తతద్రుమామ్ filled with a long stretch trees, అశోకవనికామేవ into the Ashoka garden, ప్రావిశత్ entered.

Watching the garden filled with trees, gateways ornamented with gold and gems, he entered through the pleasant pathways in the Ashoka garden. There were wonderful wolves and several herds of animals in the garden. Fruits dropped from trees were strewn all over.
అఙ్గనాశతమాత్రం తు తం వ్రజన్తమనువ్రజత్.

మహేన్ద్రమివ పౌలస్త్యం దేవగన్ధర్వయోషితః৷৷5.18.10৷৷


వ్రజన్తమ్ while sauntering, తమ్ him, పౌలస్త్యమ్ Poulastya, అఙ్గనాశతమాత్రమ్ only a hundred maidens, మహేన్ద్రమ్ Mahendra, దేవగన్ధర్వయోషితః females of gods and gandharvas, అనువ్రజత్ were following.

Ravana, son of sage Paulasti, was followed by a hundred women, just as Indra is trailed by the females of gods and gandharvas.
దీపికాః కాఞ్చనీః కాశ్చిజ్జగృహుస్తత్ర యోషితః.

వాలవ్యజనహస్తాశ్చ తాలవృన్తాని చాపరాః৷৷5.18.11৷৷


తత్ర there, కాశ్చిత్ a few, యోషితః women, కాఞ్చనీః golden, దీపికాః lamps, జగృహు held, అపరాః others, తాలవృన్తాని plam-leaf fans, జగృహుః were holding, వాలవ్యజన హస్తాశ్చ some women held fans of the hair of yak-tail.

Some women carried golden lamps, some held yalk tail fans in their hands while others bore palm-leaf fans.
కాఞ్చనైరపి భృఙ్గారైర్జహ్రుః సలిలమగ్రతః.

మణ్డలాగ్రాన్ బృసీశ్చాపి గృహ్యాన్యాః పృష్ఠతో యయుః৷৷5.18.12৷৷


కాఞ్చనైః golden, భృఙ్గారైః pitchers, అగ్రతః ahead of him, సలిలమ్ water, జహ్రుః they carried, అన్యాః others, మణ్డలాగ్రా: circular, బృసీ: చ అపి couches (rolls of twisted grass used as seats), గృహ్య by holding, పృష్ఠతః behind, యయుః moved.

Some moved ahead of him carrying water in golden pitchers. Others followed him carrying circular couches (to be used as seats).
కాచిద్రత్నమయీం స్థాలీం పూర్ణాం పానస్య భామినీ.

దక్షిణా దక్షిణేనైవ తదా జగ్రాహ పాణినా৷৷5.18.13৷৷


కాచిత్ one, భామినీ a glowing lady, దక్షిణా a compassionate lady, రత్నమయీమ్ bejewelled, పూర్ణామ్ filled completely, పానస్య wine, స్థాలీమ్ jar, దక్షిణేనైవ పాణినా with her right hand only, జగ్రాహ carried.

One glorious and compassionate lady carried in her right hand a gem-studded jar filled with wine.
రాజహంసప్రతీకాశం ఛత్రం పూర్ణశశిప్రభమ్.

సౌవర్ణదణ్డమపరా గృహీత్వా పృష్ఠతో యయౌ৷৷5.18.14৷৷


అపరా another lady, రాజహంసప్రతీకాశమ్ resembling a royal swan, పూర్ణశశిప్రభమ్ bright like full-moon, సౌవర్ణదణ్డమ్ having a golden handle, ఛత్రమ్ umbrella, గృహీత్వా taking, పృష్ఠతః behind, యయౌ went.

Another she-demon moved behind him holding an umbrella with a golden handle which was white like a royal swan and bright like the full-moon.
నిద్రామదపరీతాక్ష్యో రావణస్యోత్తమాః స్త్రియః.

అనుజగ్ముః పతిం వీరం ఘనం విద్యుల్లతా ఇవ৷৷5.18.15৷৷


నిద్రామదపరీతాక్ష్యః with eyes dizzy with sleep and intoxication, రావణస్య Ravana's, ఉత్తమాః prime, స్త్రియః wives, విద్యుల్లతాః like streaks of lightning, ఘనమివ like the the cloud, వీరమ్ heroic, పతిమ్ husband, అనుజగ్ముః followed.

The chief wives of Ravana with eyes dizzy with sleep and drinking followed their heroic husband like streaks of lightning follow a thunder cloud. (Ravana who was dark looked like a cloud and the women with dazzling golden complexion appeared like lightning.)
వ్యావిద్ధహారకేయూరాః సమామృదితవర్ణకాః.

సమాగళితకేశాన్తాస్సస్వేదవదనాస్తథా৷৷5.18.16৷৷

ఘూర్ణన్త్యో మదశేషేణ నిద్రయా చ శుభాననాః.

స్వేదక్లిష్టాఙ్గకుసుమాస్సుమాల్యాకులమూర్ధజాః৷৷5.18.17৷৷

ప్రయాన్తం నైఋతపతిం నార్యో మదిరలోచనాః.

బహుమానాచ్చ కామాచ్చ ప్రియా భార్యాస్తమన్వయుః৷৷5.18.18৷৷


వ్యావిద్ధహారకేయూరాః with necklaces and armlets disarrayed, సమామృదితవర్ణకాః with smudged sandal paste and other unguents on the body, సమాగలితకేశాన్తాః with loosened hair, తథా likewise, సస్వేదవదనాః with sweat on the faces, మదశేషేణ dizzy with left-over intoxication, నిద్రయా చ and also due to sleep, ఘూర్ణన్త్యః moving to and fro, స్వేదక్లిష్టాఙ్గకుసుమాః due to wilting of flowers by the sweat on their limbs, సుమాల్యాకులమూర్ధజాః adorned with beautiful flowers in their hair, మదిరలోచనాః drunken-eyed, ప్రియాః dear, భార్యాః wives, నార్యః ladies, బహుమానాచ్చ due to high regard, కామాచ్చ and due to passion, ప్రయాన్తమ్ as he advanced, తమ్ him, నైఋతపతిమ్ the lord of demons, అన్వయుః followed.

The necklaces and armlets (of the wives) disarrayed, the sandal paste and other unguents on the body smudged, hair hanging down their faces, the sweating damsels followed Ravana. They were dizzy with left-over intoxication and sleep and were swaying from side to side. Their dishevelled hair was loose and faces filled with sweat, their flower garlands on the body had wilted due to sweat on their limbs. The drunken wives of Ravana, actuated by their high regard and passion for him followed as he advanced with drunken eyes.
స చ కామపరాధీన: పతిస్తాసాం మహాబలః.

సీతాసక్తమనా మన్దో మన్దాఞ్చితగతిర్బభౌ৷৷5.18.19৷৷


తాసామ్ their, పతిః husband, మహాబలః powerful, కామపరాధీనః under the control of passion, స చ and he, మన్దః dull, సీతాసక్తమనాః absorbed in the thoughts of Sita, మన్దాఞ్చితగతిః walked slowly with measured steps, బభౌ became.

Their husband, powerful Ravana under the control of passion looking dull, absorbed in the thoughts of Sita walked slowly as though counting his steps.
తతః కాఞ్చీనినాదం చ నూపురాణాం చ నిస్వనమ్.

శుశ్రావ పరమస్త్రీణాం స కపిర్మారుతాత్మజః৷৷5.18.20৷৷


తతః then, మారుతాత్మజః son of the Wind-god, సః కపిః that vanara, పరమస్త్రీణామ్ of those chief wives, కాఞ్చీనినాదం చ the sound of golden girdles with small bells, నూపురాణామ్ of their anklets, నిస్వనం చ sound, శుశ్రావ heard.

Then Hanuman, son of the Wind-god, heard their jingling golden girdles and anklets.
తం చాప్రతిమకర్మాణమచిన్త్యబలపౌరుషమ్.

ద్వారదేశమనుప్రాప్తం దదర్శ హనుమాన్ కపిః৷৷5.18.21৷৷


కపిః vanara, హనుమాన్ Hanuman, అప్రతిమకర్మాణమ్ one who does incomparable deeds, అచిన్త్యబలపౌరుషమ్ a hero of unimaginable strength and valour, ద్వారదేశమ్ the entrance, అనుప్రాప్తమ్ reached, తం చ him, దదర్శ saw.

Then Hanuman, the Vanara saw Ravana of extraordinary deeds, and of unimaginable strength and valour at the entrance (of Ashoka garden)
దీపికాభిరనేకాభిః సమన్తాదవభాసితమ్.

గన్ధతైలావసిక్తాభిర్ధ్రియమాణాభిరగ్రతః৷৷5.18.22৷৷


గన్ధతైలావసిక్తాభిః wet with fragrant oil, అగ్రతః in front, ధ్రియమాణాభిః held, అనేకాభిః by many, దీపికాభిః with lamps, సమన్తాత్ everywhere, అవభాసితమ్ was shining.

Hanuman saw him in the glow of lamps wet with fragrant oil carried by many she-demons all over.
కామదర్పమదైర్యుక్తం జిహ్మతామ్రాయతేక్షణమ్.

సమక్షమివ కన్దర్పమపవిద్ధశరాసనమ్৷৷5.18.23৷৷


కామదర్పమదైః by lust, pride and intoxication, యుక్తమ్ endowed, జిహ్మతామ్రాయతేక్షణమ్ possesed of
long curved blood-shot eyes, అపవిద్ధశరాసనమ్ who set aside his quiver, సమక్షమ్ directly, కన్దర్పమివ like god of love.

Hanuman saw him, who was possessed of lust, arrogance and intoxication. He appeared like Cupid setting aside his quiver and arrows with his curved, big, red eyes.
మథితామృతఫేనాభమరజోవస్త్రముత్తమమ్.

సలీలమనుకర్షన్తం విముక్తం సక్తమఙ్గదే৷৷5.18.24৷৷


మథితామృతఫేనాభమ్ looking like the foam of churned nectar, అరజః without any dust, విముక్తమ్ slipped, అఙ్గదే in his armlet, సక్తమ్ stuck, ఉత్తమమ్ best, వస్త్రమ్ cloth, సలీలమ్ sportively, అనుకర్షన్తమ్ dragging.

He was playfully pulling up his upper garment that slipped and stuck to his armlet. This excellent unsoiled robe was looking like the foam of churned nectar.
తం పత్రవిటపే లీనః పత్రపుష్పఘనావృతః.

సమీపమివ సంక్రాన్తం నిధ్యాతుముపచక్రమే৷৷5.18.25৷৷


సమీపమ్ close by, సంక్రాన్తమివ drawn nearer, తమ్ him, పత్రవిటపే on a branch covered with leaves, లీనః concealed, పత్రపుష్పఘనావృతః thickly covered with leaves and flowers, నిధ్యాతుమ్ to scan the identity, ఉపచక్రమే started.

Hanuman seated on a leafy branch (of the simsupa tree) thickly covered with leaves and flowers started scanning the identity of Ravana who was drawing nearer.
అవేక్షమాణస్తు తతో దదర్శ కపికుఞ్జరః.

రూపయౌవనసమ్పన్నా రావణస్య వరస్త్రియః৷৷5.18.26৷৷


తతః then, కపికుఞ్జరః leader of the monkeys, అవేక్షమాణః while looking carefully, రావణస్య Ravana's, రూపయౌవనసమ్పన్నాః endowed with youth and beauty, వరస్త్రియః chief wives, దదర్శ saw.

The leader of the monkeys started gazing at the chief wives of Ravana endowed with youth and beauty৷৷
తాభిః పరివృతో రాజా సురూపాభిర్మహాయశాః.

తన్మృగద్విజసఙ్ఘుష్టం ప్రవిష్టః ప్రమదావనమ్৷৷5.18.27৷৷


మహాయశాః glorious one, రాజా king, సురూపాభిః with charming ones, తాభిః with those women, పరివృతః surrounded, మృగద్విజసఙ్ఘుష్టమ్ echoed with sounds of beasts and birds, తత్ that, ప్రమదావనమ్ grove for women, ప్రవిష్టః entered.

Surrounded by beauties, the glorious king entered the grove meant for women, reverberating with the sounds of beasts and birds.
క్షీబో విచిత్రాభరణః శఙ్కుకర్ణో మహాబలః.

తేన విశ్రవసః పుత్రః స దృష్టో రాక్షసాధిపః৷৷5.18.28৷৷

వృతః పరమనారీభిస్తారాభిరివ చన్ద్రమాః.

తం దదర్శ మహాతేజాస్తేజోవన్తం మహాకపిః৷৷5.18.29৷৷


క్షీబః excited by drinking, విచిత్రాభరణః wore wonderful ornaments, శఙ్కుకర్ణః with long tapering ears, విశ్రవసః of Visravas, పుత్రః son, తారాభిః with stars, చన్ద్రమాః ఇవ like the Moon, పరమనారీభిః with damsels, వృతః surrounded, సః he, రాక్షసాధిపః king of demons, తేన by him, దృష్టః seen, మహాతేజాః brilliant, మహాకపిః great vanara, తేజోవన్తమ్ splendid, తమ్ him, దదర్శే saw.

The brilliant vanara looked at the son of Visravas (Ravana), the demon king adorned with wonderful ornaments. He had long tapering ears. He was intoxicated with drink. Encircled by damsels, he was looking like the Moon surrounded by stars.
రావణోయం మహాబాహురితి సఞ్చిన్త్య వానరః.

అవప్లుతో మహాతేజా హనుమాన్మారుతాత్మజః৷৷5.18.30৷৷


మారుతాత్మజః son of the Wind-god, వానరః vanara, మహాతేజాః brilliant one, హనుమాన్ Hanuman, అయమ్ this, మహాబాహుః strong-armed, రావణః Ravana, ఇతి this, సఞ్చిన్త్య having thought, అవప్లుతః got down.

The brilliant vanara (Hanuman), son of the Wind-god recognising the strong-armed Ravana got down a little, saying 'This is truly the strong-armed Ravana.'
స తథాప్యుగ్రతేజాః సన్నిర్ధూతస్తస్య తేజసా.

పత్రగుహ్యాన్తరే సక్తో హనుమాన్ సంవృతోభవత్৷৷5.18.31৷৷


తథా such, ఉగ్రతేజాః possessed of extraordinary energy, సః he, హనుమాన్ Hanuman, తస్య his, తేజసా by the might, నిర్ధూతః taken aback, పత్రగుహ్యాన్తరే deep in the leaves, సక్తః concealed, సంవృతః covered, అభవత్ remained there.

Hanuman, possessed of extraordinary energy, was taken aback at the might of Ravana. He remained hiding covered over with leaves.
స తామసితకేశాన్తాం సుశ్రోణీం సంహతస్త్నీమ్.

దిదృక్షురసితాపాఙ్గాముపావర్తత రావణః৷৷5.18.32৷৷


సః he, రావణః Ravana, అసితకేశాన్తామ్ dark-haired lady, సుశ్రోణీమ్ a lady of beautiful hips, సంహతస్త్నీమ్ a lady of plump breasts, అసితాపాఙ్గామ్ with dark side glances, తామ్ her, దిదృక్షుః desiring to see, ఉపావర్తత returned

With the desire to see Sita endowed with black hair, beautiful hips, plump breasts and dark side-glances, Ravana returned (to Ashokavana).
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే అష్టాదశస్సర్గః.
Thus ends the eighteenth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
