Ravana expressed his intention in sweet words to the depressed and grief-stricken ascetic Sita surrounded by demon guards:
மாஂ தரிஷ்ட்வா நாகநாஸோரு கூஹமாநா ஸ்தநோதரம்.
அதர்ஷநமிவாத்மாநஂ பயாந்நேதுஂ த்வமிச்சஸி৷৷5.20.2৷৷

நாகநாஸோரு with thighs like the trunk of an elephant, மாம் me, தரிஷ்ட்வா on seeing, ஸ்தநோதரம் breasts and belly, கூஹமாநா concealed, த்வம் you, பயாத் through fear, ஆத்மாநம் by yourself, அதர்ஷநம் concealed, நேதும from me, இச்சஸீவ you want.
"On seeing me, Sita, you want to conceal your thighs, belly and breasts through fear of me. I think you do not want me to see you.
காமயே த்வாஂ விஷாலாக்ஷி பஹுமந்யஸ்வ மாஂ ப்ரியே.

"O large-eyed one ! you are endowed with beauty in all limbs. You are the delight of all
worlds. I desire you, dear ! Oblige me.
நேஹ கேசிந்மநுஷ்யா வா ராக்ஷஸாஃ காமரூபிணஃ.

"O Sita! no human or demon. who can take any form at their will can relieve your fear born of me.

பீரு a timid lady, பரஸ்த்ரீணாம் at wives of others, கமநஂ வா having unrighteous, ஸம்ப்ரமத்ய by force, ஹரணஂ வா or abduction, ரக்ஷஸாம் for demons, ஸர்வதைவ by all means, ஸ்வதர்மஃ is natural, ஸஂஷயஃ doubt, ந not.
"O timid lady! having an unrighteous approach to wives of others or their abduction by force is natural to demons, There is no doubt.
ஏவஂ சைததகாமாஂ து ந த்வாஂ ஸ்ப்ரக்ஷ்யாமி மைதிலி.
காமஂ காமஃ ஷரீரே மே யதாகாமஂ ப்ரவர்ததாம்৷৷5.20.6৷৷

மைதிலி Mythili, ஏதத் this, ஏவம் in this manner, காமஃ passion, காமம் passion, யதாகாமம் as it desires, மே my, ஷரீரே body, ப்ரவர்ததாம் may sway, து indeed, அகாமாம் not force to accept my desire, த்வாம் to you, ந ஸ்ப்ரக்ஷ்யாமி I will not touch.
"Mythili ! let passion hold its sway over my body as it will. But I shall not force you or touch you since you do not love me.
தேவி நேஹ பயஂ கார்யஂ மயி விஷ்வஸி ஹி ப்ரியே.

"O reverend lady, fear not me on that account. Have confidence in me. Show your love. Do not be swayed by grief .

ஏகவேணீ O lady with a single braid of hair, தராஷய்யா sleeping on the ground, த்யாநம் brooding, மலிநம் soiled, அம்பரம் clothes, அஸ்தாநே without an occasion, உபவாஸஷ்ச by fasting, ஏதாநி these, தே to you, ஔபயிகாநி not fit for you, ந not.
"O Lady, to wear a single braid, sleep on the ground, brooding, wearing soiled clothes and fasting without proper occasion does not suit you.

மைதிலி Mythili, மாம் me, ப்ராப்ய having secured, விசித்ராணி wonderful, மால்யாநி garlands, சந்தநாநி sandal, அகரூணி incense, விவிதாநி several kinds, வாஸாஂஸி ச garments, திவ்யாநி divine one, ஆபரணாநி ச ornaments, மஹார்ஹாணி rich, பாநாநி drinks, ஷயநாநி bed also, ஆஸநாநி ச and seats, கீதம் singing, நரித்தஂ ச and dancing, வாத்யஂ ச and musical instruments, லப you may take
"O Mythili! having secured me, you get all these comforts- wonderful garlands, sandal, incense, garments and beautiful ornaments, rich drinks, beds and seats.You can enjoy songs, dances accompanied by musical instruments.

ஸ்த்ரீரத்நம் a jewel among women, அஸி you are, ஏவம் this way, மா பூஃ do not remain like this, காத்ரேஷு for your limbs, பூஷணம் decoration, குரு you do, ஸுவிக்ரஹே lady of beautiful body, மாம் me, ப்ராப்ய having secured, த்வம் you, அநர்ஹா be undeserving, கதஂ நு how can you, ஸ்யாஃ be.
"You are a, a jewel among women. You should not remain like this. You should adorn yourself properly. How can you remain deprived after having me?
இதஂ தே சாரு ஸஞ்ஜாதஂ யௌவநஂ வ்யதிவர்ததே.
யததீதஂ புநர்நைதி ஸ்ரோதஃ ஷீக்ரமபாமிவ৷৷5.20.12৷৷

சாரு beautiful, ஸஞ்ஜாதம் created, இதம் this, தே யௌவநம் your youth, வ்யதிவர்ததே will pass away, யத் since, ஷீக்ரம் fast, அதீதம் a past, அபாம் water, ஸ்ரோதஃ இவ like flow, புநஃ again, நைதி does not come.
"Your charming youth should not pass away (uselessly). A past event does not come back like a current of stream.
த்வாஂ கரித்வோபரதோ மந்யே ரூபகர்தா ஸ விஷ்வஸரிக்.
ந ஹி ரூபோபமா த்வந்யா தவாஸ்தி ஷுபதர்ஷநே৷৷5.20.13৷৷

ஷுபதர்ஷநே lady of auspicious looks, ரூபகர்தா creator, ஸஃ he, விஷ்வஸரிக் one who creates the world, த்வாம் you, கரித்வா having created, உபரதஃ he stopped, மந்யே I think, அந்யா other lady, தவ ரூபோபமா comparable to your beauty, நாஸ்தி ஹி indeed does not exist.
"O lady with auspicious looks! Me thinks, the creator must have retired after creating your beautiful form. For there is no one comparable to you in beauty.
த்வாஂ ஸமாஸாத்ய வைதேஹி ரூபயௌவநஷாலிநீம்.
கஃ புமாநதிவர்தேத ஸாக்ஷாதபி பிதாமஹஃ৷৷5.20.14৷৷

வைதேஹி Vaidehi, ரூபயௌவநஷாலிநீம் endowed with (extraordinary) beauty and (exuberant) youth, த்வாம் you, ஸமாஸாத்ய after getting, ஸாக்ஷாத் personally, பிதாமஹஃ grandsire, கஃ who, புமாந் man, அதிவர்தேத retain his balance of mind.
"O Vaidehi! you have (extraordinary) beauty and (exuberant) youth. Who would not lose his balance of mind even if he were Brahma the grandsire himself after getting you?
யத்யத்பஷ்யாமி தே காத்ரஂ ஷீதாஂஷுஸதரிஷாநநே.
தஸ்மிஂஸ்தஸ்மிந் பரிதுஷ்ரோணி சக்ஷுர்மம நிபத்யதே৷৷5.20.15৷৷
தஸ்மிஂஸ்தஸ்மிந் பரிதுஷ்ரோணி சக்ஷுர்மம நிபத்யதே৷৷5.20.15৷৷
ஷீதாஂஷுஸதரிஷாநநே with face like the cool full-moon, பரிதுஷ்ரோணி heavy-hipped, தே your, யத்யத் whichever, காத்ரம் limb, பஷ்யாமி I see, தஸ்மிந் தஸ்மிந் ஏச whichever limb I behold, மம my, சக்ஷுஃ eyes, நிபத்யதே unable to extricate.
"O one with a face like the cool full-moon, with heavy hips. I am unable to extricate my eyes from any limb (of your body) I see.
பவ மைதிலி பார்யா மே மோஹமேநஂ விஸர்ஜய.
பஹ்வீநாமுத்தமஸ்த்ரீணாமாஹரிதாநாமிதஸ்ததஃ৷৷5.20.16৷৷

among the best women, ஸர்வாஸாமேவ of all of them, அக்ரமஹிஷீ the chief consort, பவ be, தே பத்ரம் be blessed৷৷
"O Mythili ! be my wife. Give up this (folly due to) delusion. Be my chief consort among the several excellent women I have picked up here and there. Be blessed.
லோகேப்யோ யாநி ரத்நாநி ஸம்ப்ரமத்யாஹரிதாநி வை৷৷5.20.17৷৷
தாநி மே பீரு ஸர்வாணி ராஜ்யஂ சைததஹஂ ச தே.
தாநி மே பீரு ஸர்வாணி ராஜ்யஂ சைததஹஂ ச தே.
பீரு a timid lady, லோகேப்யஃ from the worlds, யாநி those, ரத்நாநி gems, ஸம்ப்ரமத்ய by force, ஆஹரிதாநி brought, வை indeed, தாநி those, ஸர்வாணி all of them, மே myself, ஏதத் this, ராஜ்யம் this kingdom, அஹஂ ச and I, தே to you.
"O timid lady, gems brought forcibly from all the worlds, this kingdom as well as myself are yours.
விஜித்ய பரிதிவீஂ ஸர்வாஂ நாநாநகரமாலிநீம்৷৷5.20.18৷৷
ஜநகாய ப்ரதாஸ்யாமி தவ ஹேதோர்விலாஸிநி.
ஜநகாய ப்ரதாஸ்யாமி தவ ஹேதோர்விலாஸிநி.
விலாஸிநி a lovely lady, நாநாநகரமாலிநீம் different cities forming a garland, ஸர்வாம் all, பரிதிவீம் land, விஜித்ய winning, தவ ஹேதோஃ for your sake, ஜநகாய to Janaka, ப்ரதாஸ்யாமி will give.
"O lovely lady! I will win all the cities and lands and give them to Janaka for your sake.
நேஹ பஷ்யாமி லோகேந்யஂ யோ மே ப்ரதிபலோ பவேத்.
பஷ்ய மே ஸுமஹத்வீர்யமப்ரதித்வந்த்வமாஹவே৷৷5.20.19৷৷

யஃ whoever, மே to me, ப்ரதிபலஃ a rival, பவேத் may be, அந்யம் and no other hero, இஹ லோகே in this world, ந பஷ்யாமி I cannot see, ஆஹவே in a battle, அப்ரிதித்வந்த்வம் unrivalled, மே my, ஸுமஹத் great, வீர்யம் virility, பஷ்ய you may see.
"I'm unrivalled in this entire world. Behold my matchless virility which permits no rival
in war.
அஸகரித்ஸஂயுகே பக்நா மயா விமரிதிதத்வஜாஃ৷৷5.20.20৷৷
அஷக்தாஃ ப்ரத்யநீகேஷு ஸ்தாதுஂ மம ஸுராஸுராஃ.
அஷக்தாஃ ப்ரத்யநீகேஷு ஸ்தாதுஂ மம ஸுராஸுராஃ.
மயா by me, அஸகரித் again and again, ஸஂயுகே in battle, பக்நாஃ shattered, விமரிதிதத்வஜாஃ their flags crushed, ஸுராஸுராஃ gods and demons, மம my, ப்ரத்யநீகேஷு in the wars against me, ஸ்தாதும் to stand, அஷக்தாஃ unable.
"The gods and demons were unable to withstand my power in wars fought against me. They were often shattered and defeated with their flags crushed in war.
இச்ச மாஂ க்ரியதாமத்ய ப்ரதிகர்ம தவோத்தமம்৷৷5.20.21৷৷
ஸப்ரபாண்யவஸஜ்யந்தாஂ தவாங்கே பூஷணாநி ச.
ஸாது பஷ்யாமி தே ரூபஂ ஸஂயுக்தஂ ப்ரதிகர்மணா৷৷5.20.22৷৷

"Offer your love to me. Get yourself decorated in an excellent way. Wear glowing ornaments on your limbs. Let me see you in pleasingly decorated form.
ப்ரதிகர்மாபிஸஂயுக்தா தாக்ஷிண்யேந வராநநே.
புஂக்ஷ்வ போகாந்யதாகாமஂ பிப பீரு ரமஸ்வ ச৷৷5.20.23৷৷

வராநநே O charming lady, பீரு timid lady, தாக்ஷிண்யேந liberally, ப்ரதிகர்மாபிஸஂயுக்தா decoration, யதாகாமம் as you please, போகாந் luxuries, புஂக்ஷ்வ enjoy, பிப drink, ரமஸ்வ ச and enjoy.
"O charming lady! decorate yourself liberally. Enjoy these pleasures as you please.
Drink and make merry.

லலஸ்வ மயி விஸ்ரப்தா தரிஷ்டமாஜ்ஞாபயஸ்வ ச৷৷5.20.24৷৷

த்வம் yourself, பரிதிவீம் the land, தநாநி ச and wealth also, யதேச்சம் as you wish, ப்ரயச்ச donate, விஸ்ரப்தா being free, மயி with me, லலஸ்வ enjoy, தரிஷ்டம் boldly, ஆஜ்ஞாபயஸ்வ ச and command.
"Give away land and wealth as you wish. Enjoy with me freely and command me boldly. I will obey you by all means.
மத்ப்ரஸாதால்லலந்த்யாஷ்ச லலந்தாஂ பாந்தவாஸ்தவ.
றத்திஂ மமாநுபஷ்ய த்வஂ ஷ்ரியஂ பத்ரே யஷஷ்ச மே৷৷5.20.25৷৷

"O blessed lady, see my affluence and my fame. Seeing you enjoy (life) by my grace all your kinsmen will follow.
கிஂ கரிஷ்யஸி ராமேண ஸுபகே சீரவாஸஸா.
நிக்ஷிப்தவிஜயோ ராமோ கதஷ்ரீர்வநகோசரஃ৷৷5.20.26৷৷
வ்ரதீ ஸ்தண்டிலஷாயீ ச ஷங்கே ஜீவதி வா ந வா.

ஸுபகே O beautiful lady, சீரவாஸஸா person clad in bark robes, ராமேண with Rama, கிம் what, கரிஷ்யஸி will do, நிக்ஷிப்தவிஜயஃ renounced triumph of warrior, கதஷ்ரீஃ he lost his fortune, வநகோசரஃ wanderer in the forest, வ்ரதீ following asceticism, ஸ்தண்டிலஷாயீ ச sleeping on the ground, ராமஃ Rama, ஜீவதி வா alive or, ந வா not alive, ஷங்கே I am doubtful.
"O beautiful lady! Rama has renounced victory, he has lost his fortune. Clad in bark,
he is wandering in the forest following asceticism and sleeping on the ground. What can he do for you? I am in doubt if he is alive or not.
ந ஹி வைதேஹி ராமஸ்த்வாஂ த்ரஷ்டுஂ வா ப்யுபலப்ஸ்யதே.

"O Vaidehi! I wonder if Rama can see you at all. You are like moonlight veiled by dark clouds and cannot be seen even by the flying cranes.
ந சாபி மம ஹஸ்தாத்த்வாஂ ப்ராப்துமர்ஹதி ராகவஃ৷৷5.20.28৷৷

"Surely Raghava will not be able to win you back from my hands any more than the demon Hiranyakasipu was able to usurp the fame of Indra.

"O lovely, timid lady! your smile, your teeth and your eyes are bewitching. Just as Garuda snatches away a serpent, you ravish my mind by your beauty.

க்லிஷ்டகௌஷேயவஸநாம் wearing soiled silk clothes, தந்வீம் beautiful, த்வாம் you, அநலங்கரிதாமபி even when you are not decorated, தரிஷ்ட்வா after seeing, அஹம் I, ஸ்வேஷு at my own, தாரேஷு wives, ரதிம் love, நோபலபாமி I find not.
"Even when you are attired in soiled silk and are bereft of ornaments, I find no interest in my own wives.

யாவந்த்யோ மம ஸர்வாஸாமைஷ்வர்யம் குரு ஜாநகி.

ஜாநகி Janaki, மம my, அந்தஃபுரநிவாஸிந்யஃ residing in the harem of the royal palace, ஸர்வகுணாந்விதாஃ endowed with all virtues, யாவந்த்யஃ many of them, ஸ்த்ரியஃ women, ஸர்வாஸாம் for all of them, ஐஷ்வர்யம் authority, குரு you may exercise.
"O Janaki! There are a number of virtuous consorts residing in the harem of my royal palace. You may exercise your authority on all of them.
மம ஹ்யஸிதகேஷாந்தே த்ரைலோக்யப்ரவராஃ ஸ்த்ரியஃ৷৷5.20.32৷৷
தாஸ்த்வாஂ பரிசரிஷ்யந்தி ஷ்ரியமப்ஸரஸோ யதா.

அஸிதகேஷாந்தே lady of dark tresses, மம me, தாஃ those, த்ரைலோக்யப்ரவராஃ best among the women in the three worlds, ஸ்த்ரியஃ women, அப்ஸரஸ: apsaras, ஷ்ரியஂ யதா like goddess Lakshmi, த்வாம் you, பரிசரிஷ்யந்தி will attend on you.

ஸுஷ்ரோணி heavy-hipped, ஸுப்ரு lady of beautiful brows, வைஷ்ரவணே with Vaisravana, யாநி all such, ரத்நாநி gems, தநாநி ச and wealth, தாநி those, லோகாஂஷ்ச worlds also, மாஂ ச me as well, யதாஸுகம் be happy, புங்க்ஷ்வ you may enjoy.
"O Sita of heavy hips and beautiful brows! Be happy. Enjoy all the worlds of mine, the gems and wealth of Ravana.

"O queen! Rama is not equal to me either in penance or prowess or valour or wealth or brilliance or even in fame.
பிப விஹர ரமஸ்வ புங்க்ஷ்வ போகாந் தநநிசயஂ ப்ரதிஷாமி மேதிநீஂ ச.
மயி லல லலநே யதாஸுகஂ த்வஂ த்வயி ச ஸமேத்ய லலந்து பாந்தவாஸ்தே৷৷5.20.35৷৷

லலநே O delightful one, தநநிசயம் heaps of riches, மேதிநீஂ ச and land, ப்ரதிஷாமி will present you, த்வம் you, பிப drink, விஹர sport, ரமஸ்வ enjoy yourself, போகாந் all pleasures, புங்க்ஷ்வ you enjoy, யதாஸுகம் be happy, மயி with me, லல sport, தே your, பாந்தவாஃ relatives, ஸமேத்ய collectively, த்வயி in you, லலந்து will enjoy.
"O delightful one! I will bestow you with heaps of riches and land. Therefore, enjoy with me- drinking, sporting, and revelling. Accept me and be happy to sport with me.Let your elatives join you and enjoy all my wealth.

"O timid lady! embellish yourself with necklaces of pure gold and enjoy with me in the enchanting seaside forest groves full of trees with blossoms and swarming bees.
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே ஸுந்தரகாண்டே விஂஷஸ்ஸர்கஃ.
