Ravana expressed his intention in sweet words to the depressed and grief-stricken ascetic Sita surrounded by demon guards:
మాం దృష్ట్వా నాగనాసోరు గూహమానా స్తనోదరమ్.
అదర్శనమివాత్మానం భయాన్నేతుం త్వమిచ్ఛసి৷৷5.20.2৷৷

నాగనాసోరు with thighs like the trunk of an elephant, మామ్ me, దృష్ట్వా on seeing, స్తనోదరమ్ breasts and belly, గూహమానా concealed, త్వమ్ you, భయాత్ through fear, ఆత్మానమ్ by yourself, అదర్శనమ్ concealed, నేతుమ from me, ఇచ్ఛసీవ you want.
"On seeing me, Sita, you want to conceal your thighs, belly and breasts through fear of me. I think you do not want me to see you.
కామయే త్వాం విశాలాక్షి బహుమన్యస్వ మాం ప్రియే.

విశాలాక్షి large-eyed, సర్వాఙ్గగుణసమ్పన్నే richly endowed with beauty in all limbs, సర్వలోకమనోహరే delight of all the worlds, త్వామ్ you, కామయే desire, ప్రియే dear, మామ్ me, బహుమన్యస్వ oblige.
"O large-eyed one ! you are endowed with beauty in all limbs. You are the delight of all
worlds. I desire you, dear ! Oblige me.
నేహ కేచిన్మనుష్యా వా రాక్షసాః కామరూపిణః.
వ్యపసర్పతు తే సీతే భయం మత్తః సముత్థితమ్৷৷5.20.4৷৷

సీతే O Sita, ఇహ here, మనుష్యాః వా human beings or, కామరూపిణః those who can change their form at their will, రాక్షసాః వా or demons, కేచిత్ none, మత్తః of me, సముత్థితమ్ born, తే to you, భయమ్ fear, వ్యపసర్పతు relieve.
"O Sita! no human or demon. who can take any form at their will can relieve your fear born of me.
స్వధర్మో రక్షసాం భీరు సర్వథైవ న సంశయః.
గమనం వా పరస్త్రీణాం హరణం సమ్ప్రమథ్య వా৷৷5.20.5৷৷

భీరు a timid lady, పరస్త్రీణామ్ at wives of others, గమనం వా having unrighteous, సమ్ప్రమథ్య by force, హరణం వా or abduction, రక్షసామ్ for demons, సర్వథైవ by all means, స్వధర్మః is natural, సంశయః doubt, న not.
"O timid lady! having an unrighteous approach to wives of others or their abduction by force is natural to demons, There is no doubt.
ఏవం చైతదకామాం తు న త్వాం స్ప్రక్ష్యామి మైథిలి.
కామం కామః శరీరే మే యథాకామం ప్రవర్తతామ్৷৷5.20.6৷৷

మైథిలి Mythili, ఏతత్ this, ఏవమ్ in this manner, కామః passion, కామమ్ passion, యథాకామమ్ as it desires, మే my, శరీరే body, ప్రవర్తతామ్ may sway, తు indeed, అకామామ్ not force to accept my desire, త్వామ్ to you, న స్ప్రక్ష్యామి I will not touch.
"Mythili ! let passion hold its sway over my body as it will. But I shall not force you or touch you since you do not love me.
దేవి నేహ భయం కార్యం మయి విశ్వసి హి ప్రియే.

"O reverend lady, fear not me on that account. Have confidence in me. Show your love. Do not be swayed by grief .
ఏకవేణీ ధరాశయ్యా ధ్యానం మలినమమ్బరమ్.
అస్థానేప్యుపవాసశ్చ నైతాన్యౌపయికాని తే৷৷5.20.8৷৷

ఏకవేణీ O lady with a single braid of hair, ధరాశయ్యా sleeping on the ground, ధ్యానమ్ brooding, మలినమ్ soiled, అమ్బరమ్ clothes, అస్థానే without an occasion, ఉపవాసశ్చ by fasting, ఏతాని these, తే to you, ఔపయికాని not fit for you, న not.
"O Lady, to wear a single braid, sleep on the ground, brooding, wearing soiled clothes and fasting without proper occasion does not suit you.
విచిత్రాణి చ మాల్యాని చన్దనాన్యగరూణి చ.
వివిధాని చ వాసాంసి దివ్యాన్యాభరణాని చ৷৷5.20.9৷৷
మహార్హాణి చ పానాని శయనాన్యాసనాని చ.

మైథిలి Mythili, మామ్ me, ప్రాప్య having secured, విచిత్రాణి wonderful, మాల్యాని garlands, చన్దనాని sandal, అగరూణి incense, వివిధాని several kinds, వాసాంసి చ garments, దివ్యాని divine one, ఆభరణాని చ ornaments, మహార్హాణి rich, పానాని drinks, శయనాని bed also, ఆసనాని చ and seats, గీతమ్ singing, నృత్తం చ and dancing, వాద్యం చ and musical instruments, లభ you may take
"O Mythili! having secured me, you get all these comforts- wonderful garlands, sandal, incense, garments and beautiful ornaments, rich drinks, beds and seats.You can enjoy songs, dances accompanied by musical instruments.
స్త్రీరత్నమసి మైవం భూః కురు గాత్రేషు భూషణమ్.

స్త్రీరత్నమ్ a jewel among women, అసి you are, ఏవమ్ this way, మా భూః do not remain like this, గాత్రేషు for your limbs, భూషణమ్ decoration, కురు you do, సువిగ్రహే lady of beautiful body, మామ్ me, ప్రాప్య having secured, త్వమ్ you, అనర్హా be undeserving, కథం ను how can you, స్యాః be.
"You are a, a jewel among women. You should not remain like this. You should adorn yourself properly. How can you remain deprived after having me?
ఇదం తే చారు సఞ్జాతం యౌవనం వ్యతివర్తతే.
యదతీతం పునర్నైతి స్రోతః శీఘ్రమపామివ৷৷5.20.12৷৷

చారు beautiful, సఞ్జాతమ్ created, ఇదమ్ this, తే యౌవనమ్ your youth, వ్యతివర్తతే will pass away, యత్ since, శీఘ్రమ్ fast, అతీతమ్ a past, అపామ్ water, స్రోతః ఇవ like flow, పునః again, నైతి does not come.
"Your charming youth should not pass away (uselessly). A past event does not come back like a current of stream.
త్వాం కృత్వోపరతో మన్యే రూపకర్తా స విశ్వసృక్.
న హి రూపోపమా త్వన్యా తవాస్తి శుభదర్శనే৷৷5.20.13৷৷

శుభదర్శనే lady of auspicious looks, రూపకర్తా creator, సః he, విశ్వసృక్ one who creates the world, త్వామ్ you, కృత్వా having created, ఉపరతః he stopped, మన్యే I think, అన్యా other lady, తవ రూపోపమా comparable to your beauty, నాస్తి హి indeed does not exist.
"O lady with auspicious looks! Me thinks, the creator must have retired after creating your beautiful form. For there is no one comparable to you in beauty.
త్వాం సమాసాద్య వైదేహి రూపయౌవనశాలినీమ్.
కః పుమానతివర్తేత సాక్షాదపి పితామహః৷৷5.20.14৷৷

వైదేహి Vaidehi, రూపయౌవనశాలినీమ్ endowed with (extraordinary) beauty and (exuberant) youth, త్వామ్ you, సమాసాద్య after getting, సాక్షాత్ personally, పితామహః grandsire, కః who, పుమాన్ man, అతివర్తేత retain his balance of mind.
"O Vaidehi! you have (extraordinary) beauty and (exuberant) youth. Who would not lose his balance of mind even if he were Brahma the grandsire himself after getting you?
యద్యత్పశ్యామి తే గాత్రం శీతాంశుసదృశాననే.
తస్మింస్తస్మిన్ పృథుశ్రోణి చక్షుర్మమ నిబధ్యతే৷৷5.20.15৷৷
తస్మింస్తస్మిన్ పృథుశ్రోణి చక్షుర్మమ నిబధ్యతే৷৷5.20.15৷৷
శీతాంశుసదృశాననే with face like the cool full-moon, పృథుశ్రోణి heavy-hipped, తే your, యద్యత్ whichever, గాత్రమ్ limb, పశ్యామి I see, తస్మిన్ తస్మిన్ ఏచ whichever limb I behold, మమ my, చక్షుః eyes, నిబధ్యతే unable to extricate.
"O one with a face like the cool full-moon, with heavy hips. I am unable to extricate my eyes from any limb (of your body) I see.
భవ మైథిలి భార్యా మే మోహమేనం విసర్జయ.
బహ్వీనాముత్తమస్త్రీణామాహృతానామితస్తతః৷৷5.20.16৷৷
సర్వాసామేవ భద్రం తే మమాగ్రమహిషీ భవ.

సర్వాసామేవ భద్రం తే మమాగ్రమహిషీ భవ.
మైథిలి O Mythili, మే my, భార్యా wife, భవ be, ఏనమ్ this, మోహమ్ delusion, విసర్జయ give up, ఇతస్తతః from here and there, ఆహృతానామ్ brought, బహ్వీనామ్ of many women, మమ my, ఉత్తమస్త్రీణామ్
among the best women, సర్వాసామేవ of all of them, అగ్రమహిషీ the chief consort, భవ be, తే భద్రమ్ be blessed৷৷
"O Mythili ! be my wife. Give up this (folly due to) delusion. Be my chief consort among the several excellent women I have picked up here and there. Be blessed.
లోకేభ్యో యాని రత్నాని సమ్ప్రమథ్యాహృతాని వై৷৷5.20.17৷৷
తాని మే భీరు సర్వాణి రాజ్యం చైతదహం చ తే.

భీరు a timid lady, లోకేభ్యః from the worlds, యాని those, రత్నాని gems, సమ్ప్రమథ్య by force, ఆహృతాని brought, వై indeed, తాని those, సర్వాణి all of them, మే myself, ఏతత్ this, రాజ్యమ్ this kingdom, అహం చ and I, తే to you.
"O timid lady, gems brought forcibly from all the worlds, this kingdom as well as myself are yours.
విజిత్య పృథివీం సర్వాం నానానగరమాలినీమ్৷৷5.20.18৷৷
జనకాయ ప్రదాస్యామి తవ హేతోర్విలాసిని.
జనకాయ ప్రదాస్యామి తవ హేతోర్విలాసిని.
విలాసిని a lovely lady, నానానగరమాలినీమ్ different cities forming a garland, సర్వామ్ all, పృథివీమ్ land, విజిత్య winning, తవ హేతోః for your sake, జనకాయ to Janaka, ప్రదాస్యామి will give.
"O lovely lady! I will win all the cities and lands and give them to Janaka for your sake.
నేహ పశ్యామి లోకేన్యం యో మే ప్రతిబలో భవేత్.
పశ్య మే సుమహద్వీర్యమప్రతిద్వన్ద్వమాహవే৷৷5.20.19৷৷

యః whoever, మే to me, ప్రతిబలః a rival, భవేత్ may be, అన్యమ్ and no other hero, ఇహ లోకే in this world, న పశ్యామి I cannot see, ఆహవే in a battle, అప్రితిద్వన్ద్వమ్ unrivalled, మే my, సుమహత్ great, వీర్యమ్ virility, పశ్య you may see.
"I'm unrivalled in this entire world. Behold my matchless virility which permits no rival
in war.
అసకృత్సంయుగే భగ్నా మయా విమృదితధ్వజాః৷৷5.20.20৷৷
అశక్తాః ప్రత్యనీకేషు స్థాతుం మమ సురాసురాః.
అశక్తాః ప్రత్యనీకేషు స్థాతుం మమ సురాసురాః.
మయా by me, అసకృత్ again and again, సంయుగే in battle, భగ్నాః shattered, విమృదితధ్వజాః their flags crushed, సురాసురాః gods and demons, మమ my, ప్రత్యనీకేషు in the wars against me, స్థాతుమ్ to stand, అశక్తాః unable.
"The gods and demons were unable to withstand my power in wars fought against me. They were often shattered and defeated with their flags crushed in war.
ఇచ్ఛ మాం క్రియతామద్య ప్రతికర్మ తవోత్తమమ్৷৷5.20.21৷৷
సప్రభాణ్యవసజ్యన్తాం తవాఙ్గే భూషణాని చ.
సాధు పశ్యామి తే రూపం సంయుక్తం ప్రతికర్మణా৷৷5.20.22৷৷
సప్రభాణ్యవసజ్యన్తాం తవాఙ్గే భూషణాని చ.

మామ్ me, ఇచ్ఛ love, అద్య today, తవ your, ఉత్తమమ్ best, ప్రతికర్మ decoration, క్రియతామ్ do, తవ your, అఙ్గే on limbs, సప్రభాణి radiant ones, భూషణాని చ ornaments, అవసజ్యన్తామ్ wear, ప్రతికర్మణా యుక్తమ్ by decorating yourself, తే your, రూపమ్ form, సాధు pleasingly, పశ్యామి I wish to see.
"Offer your love to me. Get yourself decorated in an excellent way. Wear glowing ornaments on your limbs. Let me see you in pleasingly decorated form.
ప్రతికర్మాభిసంయుక్తా దాక్షిణ్యేన వరాననే.
భుంక్ష్వ భోగాన్యథాకామం పిబ భీరు రమస్వ చ৷৷5.20.23৷৷

వరాననే O charming lady, భీరు timid lady, దాక్షిణ్యేన liberally, ప్రతికర్మాభిసంయుక్తా decoration, యథాకామమ్ as you please, భోగాన్ luxuries, భుంక్ష్వ enjoy, పిబ drink, రమస్వ చ and enjoy.
"O charming lady! decorate yourself liberally. Enjoy these pleasures as you please.
Drink and make merry.
యథేష్టం చ ప్రయచ్ఛ త్వం పృథివీం వా ధనాని చ.
లలస్వ మయి విస్రబ్ధా ధృష్టమాజ్ఞాపయస్వ చ৷৷5.20.24৷৷

త్వమ్ yourself, పృథివీమ్ the land, ధనాని చ and wealth also, యథేచ్ఛమ్ as you wish, ప్రయచ్ఛ donate, విస్రబ్ధా being free, మయి with me, లలస్వ enjoy, ధృష్టమ్ boldly, ఆజ్ఞాపయస్వ చ and command.
"Give away land and wealth as you wish. Enjoy with me freely and command me boldly. I will obey you by all means.
మత్ప్రసాదాల్లలన్త్యాశ్చ లలన్తాం బాన్ధవాస్తవ.
ఋద్ధిం మమానుపశ్య త్వం శ్రియం భద్రే యశశ్చ మే৷৷5.20.25৷৷

"O blessed lady, see my affluence and my fame. Seeing you enjoy (life) by my grace all your kinsmen will follow.
కిం కరిష్యసి రామేణ సుభగే చీరవాససా.
నిక్షిప్తవిజయో రామో గతశ్రీర్వనగోచరః৷৷5.20.26৷৷
వ్రతీ స్థణ్డిలశాయీ చ శఙ్కే జీవతి వా న వా.

వ్రతీ స్థణ్డిలశాయీ చ శఙ్కే జీవతి వా న వా.
సుభగే O beautiful lady, చీరవాససా person clad in bark robes, రామేణ with Rama, కిమ్ what, కరిష్యసి will do, నిక్షిప్తవిజయః renounced triumph of warrior, గతశ్రీః he lost his fortune, వనగోచరః wanderer in the forest, వ్రతీ following asceticism, స్థణ్డిలశాయీ చ sleeping on the ground, రామః Rama, జీవతి వా alive or, న వా not alive, శఙ్కే I am doubtful.
"O beautiful lady! Rama has renounced victory, he has lost his fortune. Clad in bark,
he is wandering in the forest following asceticism and sleeping on the ground. What can he do for you? I am in doubt if he is alive or not.
న హి వైదేహి రామస్త్వాం ద్రష్టుం వా ప్యుపలప్స్యతే.
పురోబలాకైరసితైర్మేఘైర్జ్యోత్స్నామివావృతామ్৷৷5.20.27৷৷

"O Vaidehi! I wonder if Rama can see you at all. You are like moonlight veiled by dark clouds and cannot be seen even by the flying cranes.
న చాపి మమ హస్తాత్త్వాం ప్రాప్తుమర్హతి రాఘవః৷৷5.20.28৷৷
హిరణ్యకశిపుః కీర్తిమిన్ద్రహస్తగతామివ.

హిరణ్యకశిపుః Hiranyakasipu, ఇన్ద్రహస్తగతామ్ from Indra, కీర్తిమివ like fame, రాఘవః Raghava, మమ my, హస్తాత్ from the hands, త్వామ్ you, ప్రాప్తుమ్ to win, న చాపి అర్హతి he will not be able.
"Surely Raghava will not be able to win you back from my hands any more than the demon Hiranyakasipu was able to usurp the fame of Indra.
చారుస్మితే చారుదతి చారునేత్రే విలాసిని৷৷5.20.29৷৷
మనో హరసి మే భీరు సుపర్ణః పన్నగం యథా.

చారుస్మితే lady of charming smile, చారుదతి lady of beautiful teeth, చారునేత్రే beautiful-eyed, విలాసిని luxurious, భీరు timid one, సుపర్ణః Garuda, పన్నగం యథా like serpent, మే my, మనః mind, హరసి attract.
"O lovely, timid lady! your smile, your teeth and your eyes are bewitching. Just as Garuda snatches away a serpent, you ravish my mind by your beauty.
క్లిష్టకౌశేయవసనాం తన్వీమప్యనలఙ్కృతామ్৷৷5.20.30৷৷
త్వాం దృష్ట్వా స్వేషు దారేషు రతిం నోపలభామ్యహమ్.
త్వాం దృష్ట్వా స్వేషు దారేషు రతిం నోపలభామ్యహమ్.
క్లిష్టకౌశేయవసనామ్ wearing soiled silk clothes, తన్వీమ్ beautiful, త్వామ్ you, అనలఙ్కృతామపి even when you are not decorated, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, అహమ్ I, స్వేషు at my own, దారేషు wives, రతిమ్ love, నోపలభామి I find not.
"Even when you are attired in soiled silk and are bereft of ornaments, I find no interest in my own wives.
అన్తఃపురనివాసిన్యః స్త్రియః సర్వగుణాన్వితాః৷৷5.20.31৷৷
యావన్త్యో మమ సర్వాసామైశ్వర్యమ్ కురు జానకి.

జానకి Janaki, మమ my, అన్తఃపురనివాసిన్యః residing in the harem of the royal palace, సర్వగుణాన్వితాః endowed with all virtues, యావన్త్యః many of them, స్త్రియః women, సర్వాసామ్ for all of them, ఐశ్వర్యమ్ authority, కురు you may exercise.
"O Janaki! There are a number of virtuous consorts residing in the harem of my royal palace. You may exercise your authority on all of them.
మమ హ్యసితకేశాన్తే త్రైలోక్యప్రవరాః స్త్రియః৷৷5.20.32৷৷
తాస్త్వాం పరిచరిష్యన్తి శ్రియమప్సరసో యథా.

అసితకేశాన్తే lady of dark tresses, మమ me, తాః those, త్రైలోక్యప్రవరాః best among the women in the three worlds, స్త్రియః women, అప్సరస: apsaras, శ్రియం యథా like goddess Lakshmi, త్వామ్ you, పరిచరిష్యన్తి will attend on you.
యాని వైశ్రవణే సుభ్రు రత్నాని చ ధనాని చ৷৷5.20.33৷৷
తాని లోకాంశ్చ సుశ్రోణి మాం చ భుఙ్క్ష్వ యథాసుఖమ్.
తాని లోకాంశ్చ సుశ్రోణి మాం చ భుఙ్క్ష్వ యథాసుఖమ్.
సుశ్రోణి heavy-hipped, సుభ్రు lady of beautiful brows, వైశ్రవణే with Vaisravana, యాని all such, రత్నాని gems, ధనాని చ and wealth, తాని those, లోకాంశ్చ worlds also, మాం చ me as well, యథాసుఖమ్ be happy, భుఙ్క్ష్వ you may enjoy.
"O Sita of heavy hips and beautiful brows! Be happy. Enjoy all the worlds of mine, the gems and wealth of Ravana.
న రామస్తపసా దేవి న బలేన న విక్రమైః৷৷5.20.34৷৷
న ధనేన మయా తుల్యస్తేజసా యశసాపి వా.
న ధనేన మయా తుల్యస్తేజసా యశసాపి వా.
దేవి queen, రామః Rama, తపసా by penance, మయా to me, న తుల్యః not equal, బలేన by prowess, న విక్రమైః nor by valour, న not, ధనేన in wealth, తేజసా in brilliance, యశసాపి వా or even in fame, న not.
"O queen! Rama is not equal to me either in penance or prowess or valour or wealth or brilliance or even in fame.
పిబ విహర రమస్వ భుఙ్క్ష్వ భోగాన్ ధననిచయం ప్రదిశామి మేదినీం చ.
మయి లల లలనే యథాసుఖం త్వం త్వయి చ సమేత్య లలన్తు బాన్ధవాస్తే৷৷5.20.35৷৷

లలనే O delightful one, ధననిచయమ్ heaps of riches, మేదినీం చ and land, ప్రదిశామి will present you, త్వమ్ you, పిబ drink, విహర sport, రమస్వ enjoy yourself, భోగాన్ all pleasures, భుఙ్క్ష్వ you enjoy, యథాసుఖమ్ be happy, మయి with me, లల sport, తే your, బాన్ధవాః relatives, సమేత్య collectively, త్వయి in you, లలన్తు will enjoy.
"O delightful one! I will bestow you with heaps of riches and land. Therefore, enjoy with me- drinking, sporting, and revelling. Accept me and be happy to sport with me.Let your elatives join you and enjoy all my wealth.
కుసుమితతరుజాలసన్తతాని భ్రమరయుతాని సముద్రతీరజాని.

భీరు a timid lady, కనకవిమలహారభూషితాఙ్గీ deck yourself with pure gold necklace, కుసుమితతరుజాలసన్తతాని with stretches of trees filled with blossoms, భ్రమరయుతాని with swarm of bees, సముద్రతీరజాని grown on the sea shore, కాననాని in the forest groves, మయా సహ with me, విహర you may enjoy.
"O timid lady! embellish yourself with necklaces of pure gold and enjoy with me in the enchanting seaside forest groves full of trees with blossoms and swarming bees.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే వింశస్సర్గః.
