ஸீதா Sita, ரௌத்ரஸ்ய angry, தஸ்ய his, ரக்ஷஸஃ of the demon, தத் those, வசநம் words, ஷ்ருத்வா after hearing, ஆர்தா oppressed, தீநஸ்வரா in a sorrowful tone, தீநம் pitiable, ஷநைஃ slowly, வசஃ words, ப்ரத்யுவாச replied.
On hearing the demon's haughty words, oppressed, pitiable Sita replied slowly in a sorrowful tone.
துஃகார்தா ருததீ ஸீதா வேபமாநா தபஸ்விநீ.

துஃகார்தா afflicted by grief, தபஸ்விநீ ascetic, வராரோஹா a lady of beautiful hips, பதிவ்ரதா chaste woman, பதிமேவ only husband, சிந்தயந்தீ thinking of, ஷுசிஸ்மிதா with a gentle smile, ஸீதா Sita, ருததீ sobbing, வேபமாநா trembling, தரிணம் a blade of grass, அந்தரதஃ between (Ravana and her), கரித்வா placed, ப்ரத்யுவாச replied.
Sita, austere, beautiful and chaste afflicted by grief kept sobbing. Brooding over her husband and trembling in fear, she placed a blade of grass in between her and Ravana and replied with a gentle smile on her face.
நிவர்தய மநோ மத்தஃ ஸ்வஜநே க்ரியதாஂ மநஃ৷৷5.21.3৷৷
ந மாஂ ப்ரார்தயிதுஂ யுக்தஂ ஸுஸித்திமிவ பாபகரித்.

மத்தஃ from me, மநஃ mind, நிவர்தய turn away, ஸ்வஜநே in your own wives, மநஃ mind, க்ரியதாம் you may fix, பாபகரித் sinner, ஸுஸித்திமிவ like blessedness, மாம் me, ப்ரார்தயிதும் to desire, ந யுக்தம் it is not proper.
"Turn your mind away from me and fix it on your wives. You should not expect to seek me just as a sinner cannot hope to seek blessedness.

மஹதி high, குலே lineage, ஜாதயா born, புண்யம் meritorious, குலம் family, ஸம்ப்ராப்தயா joined by virtue of marriage, ஏகபத்ந்யா a woman devoted to a single husband, மயா by me, விகர்ஹிதம் contemptible, அகார்யம் forbidden act, ந கார்யம் not to be done.
"I was born of high lineage and joined a meritorious family by virtue of my marriage. I am devoted only to my husband. I should not commit this contemptible, forbidden act."
ஏவமுக்த்வா து வைதேஹீ ராவணஂ தஂ யஷஸ்விநீ৷৷5.21.5৷৷

யஷஸ்விநீ glorious lady, வைதேஹீ Vaidehi, தஂ ராவணம் that Ravana, ஏவம் in that manner, உக்த்வா having spoken, ராக்ஷஸம் demon, பரிஷ்டதஃ at the back, கரித்வா having placed, பூயஃ further, வசநம் these words, அப்ரவீத் spoke.
Glorious Vaidehi having thus spoken to the demon turned her back and continued:
நாஹமௌபயிகீ பார்யா பரபார்யா ஸதீ தவ৷৷5.21.6৷৷
ஸாது தர்மமவேக்ஷஸ்வ ஸாது ஸாதுவ்ரதஂ சர.

பரபார்யா other's wife, ஸதீ chaste, அஹம் I am, ஔபயிகீ obtained by efforts, பார்யா wife, ந not, தர்மம் righteous, ஸாது properly, அவேக்ஷஸ்வ you may examine, தவ your, ஸாதுவ்ரதம் honesty, ஸாது
honest, சர you may practise.
"I cannot be your lawful wife obtainable by your personal efforts. I am a chaste woman married to another man. (Being a king) examine the dharma honestly and adopt a pious way of life.
யதா தவ ததாந்யேஷாஂ தாரா ரக்ஷ்யா நிஷாசர৷৷5.21.7৷৷
ஆத்மாநமுபமாஂ கரித்வா ஸ்வேஷு தாரேஷு ரம்யதாம்.

நிஷாசர night-roamer (Ravana), தவ your, யதா as such, அந்யேஷாம் others, தாராஃ wives, ததா in the same way, ரக்ஷ்யாஃ should be protected, ஆத்மாநம் yourself, உபமா an example, கரித்வா by placing, ஸ்வேஷு at your, தாரேஷு at wives, ரம்யதாம் you may enjoy.
"O night-ranger! Enjoy your wives. Take care of them. Taking your example, others' wives also deserve to be protected.
அதுஷ்டஂ ஸ்வேஷு தாரேஷு சபலஂ சலிதேந்த்ரியம்৷৷5.21.8৷৷

ஸ்வேஷு with your own, தாரேஷு in wives, அதுஷ்டம் unsatisfied, சபலம் unsteady, சலிதேந்த்ரியம் one with no control over the senses, நிகரிதிப்ரஜ்ஞம் evil minded, பரதாராஃ others wives, பராபவம் insult, நயந்தி take.
"The wives of others will insult an evil-minded man who is not satisfied with his own wives, is fickle-minded and has no control over his senses.
இஹ ஸந்தோ ந வா ஸந்தி ஸதோ வா நாநுவர்தஸே৷৷5.21.9৷৷
ததாஹி விபரீதா தே புத்திராசாரவர்ஜிதா.
ததாஹி விபரீதா தே புத்திராசாரவர்ஜிதா.
இஹ here, ஸந்தஃ pious, ந வா ஸந்தி are not present, ஸதஃ of the saints, நாநுவர்தஸே வா you do not follow, ததாஹி this way, ஆசாரவர்ஜிதா that which is a forbidden act, தே your, புத்திஃ mind, விபரீதா perverse.
வசோ மித்யாப்ரணீதாத்மா பத்யமுக்தஂ விசக்ஷணைஃ৷৷5.21.10৷৷
ராக்ஷஸாநாமபாவாய த்வஂ வா ந ப்ரதிபத்யஸே.
ராக்ஷஸாநாமபாவாய த்வஂ வா ந ப்ரதிபத்யஸே.
மித்யாப்ரணீதாத்மா indulging in unrighteous act, த்வம் you, விசக்ஷணைஃ who have sense of discrimination, உக்தம் spoken, பத்யம் proper advice, வசஃ words, ராக்ஷாஸாநாம் of demons, அபாவாய for destruction, ந ப்ரதிபத்யஸே you do not agree.
"You are indulging in unrighteous act and not listening to the advice of wise men who have a sense of discrimination. You are the cause of the destruction of demons.
அகரிதாத்மாநமாஸாத்ய ராஜாநமநயே ரதம்৷৷5.21.11৷৷
ஸமரித்தாநி விநஷ்யந்தி ராஷ்ட்ராணி நகராணி ச.
ஸமரித்தாநி விநஷ்யந்தி ராஷ்ட்ராணி நகராணி ச.
அகரிதாத்மாநம் foolish, அநயே in unfair means, ரதம் engaged, ராஜாநம் king, ஆஸாத்ய after obtaining, ஸமரித்தாநி prosperous, ராஷ்ட்ராணி countries, நகராணி ச and cities, விநஷ்யந்தி are destroyed.
"Even prosperous countries and cities are destroyed on account of indiscreet rulers engaged in unfair means.
ததேயஂ த்வாஂ ஸமாஸாத்ய லங்கா ரத்நௌகஸங்குலா৷৷5.21.12৷৷
அபராதாத்தவைகஸ்ய நசிராத்விநஷிஷ்யதி.
அபராதாத்தவைகஸ்ய நசிராத்விநஷிஷ்யதி.
ததா in that way, த்வாம் you, ஸமாஸாத்ய having got, ரத்நௌகஸங்குலா filled with gems, இயம் this, லங்கா Lanka, ஏகஸ்ய a single person, தவ your, அபராதாத் for your crime, ந சிராத் very soon, விநஷிஷ்யதி will be destroyed.
"Having got you as its ruler, this Lanka filled with gems (riches) will perish without
delay for the crime of one individual.
ஸ்வகரிதைர்ஹந்யமாநஸ்ய ராவணாதீர்கதர்ஷிநஃ৷৷5.21.13৷৷
அபிநந்தந்தி பூதாநி விநாஷே பாபகர்மணஃ.
அபிநந்தந்தி பூதாநி விநாஷே பாபகர்மணஃ.
ராவண Ravana, அதீர்கதர்ஷிநஃ of a short sighted, ஸ்வகரிதைஃ by your own deed, ஹந்யமாநஸ்ய killed, பாபகர்மணஃ of a sinner, விநாஷே at the destruction, பூதாநி living creatures, அபிநந்தந்தி will rejoice.
"O Ravana! living beings will welcome and enjoy the destruction of a short-sighted sinner killed by his own vile act.
ஏவஂ த்வாஂ பாபகர்மாணஂ வக்ஷ்யந்தி நிகரிதா ஜநாஃ৷৷5.21.14৷৷
திஷ்ட்யைதத்வ்யஸநஂ ப்ராப்தோ ரௌத்ர இத்யேவ ஹர்ஷிதாஃ.
திஷ்ட்யைதத்வ்யஸநஂ ப்ராப்தோ ரௌத்ர இத்யேவ ஹர்ஷிதாஃ.
ஏவம் in that way, பாபகர்மாணம் sinner, த்வாம் you, நிகரிதாஃ insulted, ஜநாஃ people, ஹர்ஷிதாஃ will feel glad, ரௌத்ரஃ angry one, திஷ்ட்யா luckily, ஏதத் thus, வ்யஸநம் doom, ப்ராப்தஃ met, இத்யேவ like this, வக்ஷ்யந்தி they will say.
"Seeing you, getting ruined this way for your sin, those who were angry with you for their humiliation in your hands will feel glad and say 'Luckily this terrible fellow has met with his doom' .
ஷக்யா லோபயிதுஂ நாஹமைஷ்வர்யேண தநேந வா৷৷5.21.15৷৷
அநந்யா ராகவேணாஹஂ பாஸ்கரேண ப்ரபா யதா.
அநந்யா ராகவேணாஹஂ பாஸ்கரேண ப்ரபா யதா.
அஹம் I, ஐஷ்வர்யேண by power, தநேந வா or even with wealth, லோபயிதும் to be tempted, ந ஷக்யா not possible, ப்ரபா light, பாஸ்கரேண யதா like that of the Sun, அஹம் I, ராகவேண by Raghava, அநந்யா inseparable.
"I cannot be lured by your power or wealth. I am inseparable from Raghava like light from the Sun.
உபதாய புஜஂ தஸ்ய லோகநாதஸ்ய ஸத்கரிதம்৷৷5.21.16৷৷
கதஂ நாமோபதாஸ்யாமி புஜமந்யஸ்ய கஸ்ய சித்.
கதஂ நாமோபதாஸ்யாமி புஜமந்யஸ்ய கஸ்ய சித்.
லோகநாதஸ்ய of the lord of the people, தஸ்ய his, ஸத்கரிதம் an honourable one, புஜம் arm, உபதாய having used as a pillow, அந்யஸ்ய others, கஸ்ய சித் of any one, புஜம் arm, கதஂ நாம how can I, உபதாஸ்யாமி will I rest.
"How can I pillow on somebody's arm after resting on the honourable arm of the great lord of the worlds ?
அஹமௌபயிகீ பார்யா தஸ்யைவ வஸுதாபதேஃ৷৷5.21.17৷৷
வ்ரதஸ்நாதஸ்ய விப்ரஸ்ய வித்யேவ விதிதாத்மநஃ.
வ்ரதஸ்நாதஸ்ய விப்ரஸ்ய வித்யேவ விதிதாத்மநஃ.
வ்ரதஸ்நாதஸ்ய an ascetic who had ceremonial bath having observed vows, விதிதாத்மநஃ knower of the self, விப்ரஸ்ய brahmin's, வித்யா இவ like the knowledge, அஹம் I, வஸுதாபதேஃ of the lord of the earth, தஸ்யைவ him alone, ஔபயிகீ fit, பார்யா wife.
"I am alone the lawful wife of the lord of the earth like the knowledge of the Vedas which rightfully belongs to a wise brahmin who has realised the self after having had his ceremonial bath (as a token of celibacy) and having observed strict vows during the period of his study.
ஸாது ராவண ராமேண மாஂ ஸமாநய துஃகிதாம்৷৷5.21.18৷৷
வநே வாஷிதயா ஸார்தஂ கரேண்வேவ கஜாதிபம்.
வநே வாஷிதயா ஸார்தஂ கரேண்வேவ கஜாதிபம்.
ராவண Ravana, துஃகிதாம் grieving, மாம் to me, கஜாதிபம் with the king of elephants, வநே in the forest, வாஷிதயா by the separated, கரேண்வேவ female elephant, ராமேண with Rama, ஸார்தம் along with, ஸாது it is proper, ஸமாநய you may unite me.
"O Ravana! it is proper for you to unite me in distress with Rama as one would unite a female elephant with the lordly elephant from which it is separated in the wilderness.
மித்ரமௌபயிகஂ கர்துஂ ராமஃ ஸ்தாநஂ பரீப்ஸதா৷৷5.21.19৷৷
வதஂ சாநிச்சதா கோரஂ த்வயாஸௌ புருஷர்ஷபஃ.
வதஂ சாநிச்சதா கோரஂ த்வயாஸௌ புருஷர்ஷபஃ.
அஸௌ this, புருஷர்ஷபஃ bull among men, ராமஃ Rama, ஸ்தாநம் it is proper, பரீப்ஸதா desirous of avoiding, கோரம் dreadful, வதம் death, அநிச்சதா ச by not willing, த்வயா by you, மித்ரம் friendship, கர்தும் to do, ஔபயிகம் with due effort.
"I wish you to build friendship with Rama, the bull among men. Surely it is the right thing for you to do, if you are desirous of avoiding a dreadful death.
விதிதஃ ஸ ஹி தர்மஜ்ஞஃ ஷரணாகதவத்ஸலஃ৷৷5.21.20৷৷
தேந மைத்ரீ பவது தே யதி ஜீவிதுமிச்சஸி.
தேந மைத்ரீ பவது தே யதி ஜீவிதுமிச்சஸி.
தர்மஜ்ஞஃ one who knows dharma, ஸஃ he, ஷரணாகதவத்ஸலஃ kind to those who seek his protection, விதிதஃ ஹி famous, ஜீவிதும் to preserve your life, இச்சஸி யதி if you so desire, தே to you, தேந with him, மைத்ரீ friendship, பவது be built.
"He is famous as a knower of dharma and is compassionate to those who seek his protection. If you desire to preserve your life build friendship with him.
ப்ரஸாதயஸ்வ த்வஂ சைநஂ ஷரணாகதவத்ஸலம்৷৷5.21.21৷৷
மாஂ சாஸ்மை நியதோ பூத்வா நிர்யாதயிதுமர்ஹஸி.
மாஂ சாஸ்மை நியதோ பூத்வா நிர்யாதயிதுமர்ஹஸி.
த்வம் you, ஷரணாகதவத்ஸலம் one who is compassionate to those who seek refuge, ஏநம் him, ப்ரஸாதயஸ்வ ச propitiate, நியதஃ disciplined, பூத்வா after exercising, மாம் me, அஸ்மை for your sake I, நிர்யாதயிதும் to return, அர்ஹஸி it is proper for you.
"Propitiate him. He is compassionate to those who seek refuge. Exercise control over your senses for your sake and it is proper for you to return me to him.
ஏவஂ ஹி தே பவேத்ஸ்வஸ்தி ஸம்ப்ரதாய ரகூத்தமே৷৷5.21.22৷৷
அந்யதா த்வஂ ஹி குர்வாணோ வதஂ ப்ராப்ஸ்யஸி ராவண.
அந்யதா த்வஂ ஹி குர்வாணோ வதஂ ப்ராப்ஸ்யஸி ராவண.
ஏவம் in that way, ரகூத்தமே foremost in the Raghu family, ஸம்ப்ரதாய after giving away, தே to you, ஸ்வஸ்தி welfare, பவேத் may be, ராவண Ravana, த்வம் you, அந்யதா otherwise, குர்வாணஃ doing so, வதம் death, ப்ராப்ஸ்யஸி will face.
"It is good for you to give me back to Rama, the foremost in the Raghu dynasty. Otherwise you will face death.
வர்ஜயேத்வஜ்ரமுத்ஸரிஷ்டஂ வர்ஜயேதந்தகஷ்சிரம்৷৷5.21.23৷৷
த்வத்விதஂ து ந ஸங்கரித்தோ லோகநாதஃ ஸ ராகவஃ.
த்வத்விதஂ து ந ஸங்கரித்தோ லோகநாதஃ ஸ ராகவஃ.
த்வத்விதம் a person like you, உத்ஸரிஷ்டம் that which has been released, வஜ்ரம் thunderbolt, வர்ஜயேத் may spare its target, சிரம் for a long time, அந்தகஃ Yama, வர்ஜயேத் may leave, ஸங்கரித்தஃ angry, லோகநாதஃ lord of the world, ஸஃ that, ராகவஃ Raghava, ந will not.
ராமஸ்ய தநுஷஃ ஷப்தஂ ஷ்ரோஷ்யஸி த்வஂ மஹாஸ்வநம்৷৷5.21.24৷৷
ஷதக்ரதுவிஸரிஷ்டஸ்ய நிர்கோஷமஷநேரிவ.

ஷதக்ரதுவிஸரிஷ்டஸ்ய released by Indra who has performed a hundred yajnas, அஷநேஃ of a thunderbolt, நிர்கோஷமிவ like the rumble, ராமஸ்ய Rama's, தநுஷஃ bow's, மஹாஸ்வநம் great twang, ஷப்தம் sound, த்வம் you, ஷ்ரோஷ்யஸி you will hear.
"You will hear the terrible twang of Rama's bow resembling the rumble of the thunderbolt released by Indra who performed a hundred yajnas.
இஹ ஷீக்ரஂ ஸுபர்வாணோ ஜ்வலிதாஸ்யா இவோரகா: ৷৷5.21.25৷৷
இஷவோ நிபதிஷ்யந்தி ராமலக்ஷ்மணலக்ஷணாஃ.
இஷவோ நிபதிஷ்யந்தி ராமலக்ஷ்மணலக்ஷணாஃ.
ஸுபர்வாணஃ well jointed arrows, ஷீக்ரஂ soon, ஜ்வலிதாஸ்யாஃ with flaming fangs, உரகாஃ இவ like the poisonous snakes, ராமலக்ஷ்மணலக்ஷணாஃ marked with the names of Rama and Lakshmana, இஷவஃ arrows, இஹ here, நிபதிஷ்யந்தி will be raining.
ரக்ஷாஂஸி பரிநிக்நந்தஃ புர்யாமஸ்யாஂ ஸமந்ததஃ৷৷5.21.26৷৷
அஸஂபாதஂ கரிஷ்யந்தி பதந்தஃ கங்கவாஸஸஃ.
அஸஂபாதஂ கரிஷ்யந்தி பதந்தஃ கங்கவாஸஸஃ.
கங்கவாஸஸஃ the shafts with feathers of Kanka bird, பதந்த: while falling, அஸ்யாம் in this, புர்யாம் city, ஸமந்ததஃ all over, ரக்ஷாஂஸி demons, பரிநிக்நந்தஃ killing, அஸம்பாதம் covering all over, கரிஷ்யந்தி will fall.
"The shafts bound with feathers of Kanka birds (released by Rama and Lakshmana) will be killing the demons all over this Lanka. They will not give a chance for any other weapon to fall.
ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரமஹாஸர்பாந் ஸ ராமகருடோ மஹாந்৷৷5.21.27৷৷
உத்தரிஷ்யதி வேகேந வைநதேய இவோரகாந்.

மஹாந் great, ஸஃ he, ராமகருடஃ Garuda of Rama, ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ர demon king, மஹாஸர்பாந் great serpents (in the form of demon chiefs), வைநதேயஃ son of Vinata or Garuda, உரகாநிவ like serpents, வேகேந swiftly, உத்தரிஷ்யதி will carry up.
"Just as Garuda swiftly extirpates the serpents, Rama will exterminate the demon leaders.
அபநேஷ்யதி மாஂ பர்தா த்வத்தஃ ஷீக்ரமரிந்தமஃ৷৷5.21.28৷৷
அஸுரேப்யஃ ஷ்ரியஂ தீப்தாஂ விஷ்ணுஸ்த்ரிபிரிவ க்ரமைஃ.
அஸுரேப்யஃ ஷ்ரியஂ தீப்தாஂ விஷ்ணுஸ்த்ரிபிரிவ க்ரமைஃ.
ஷீக்ரம் swiftly, அரிந்தமஃ subduer of enemies, பர்தா husband, மாம் me, த்வத்தஃ from you, விஷ்ணுஃ Visnu, த்ரிபிஃ with three, க்ரமைஃ strides, தீப்தாம் glowing, ஷ்ரியம் prosperity, அஸுரேப்யஃ இவ like that from the asuras, அபநேஷ்யதி will take away.
"My husband, the subduer of enemies, will soon take me away just as Lord Visnu in the form of Vamana took away the glowing prosperity from the demons with three strides.
ஜநஸ்தாநே ஹதஸ்தாநே நிஹதே ரக்ஷஸாஂ பலே৷৷5.21.29৷৷

"When the army of demons as killed you had no capacity to protect and was destroyed at Janasthana, the place of death. You acted in this dishonest way.

அதம mean creature, நரஸிஂஹயோஃ two lions among men, தயோஃ those two, ப்ராத்ரோஃ brothers, கோசரம் not found, கதயோஃ when they went, ஷூந்யம் desolate, ஆஷ்ரமம் hut, ப்ரவிஷ்ய entered, த்வயா you, அபநீதா abducted.
"You are a mean creature. Finding me in the vacant hut, when the two brothers, lions among men, were away, you abducted me.

ஷுநா by a dog, ஷார்தூலயோரிவ like two tigers, ராமலக்ஷ்மணயோஃ of both Rama and Lakshmana, கந்தம் smell, உபாக்ராய smelling, த்வயா by you, ஸந்தர்ஷநே in their sight, ஸ்தாதும் to stand there, ந ஷக்யஂ ஹி it will not be possible.
"Had you smelt the presence of Rama and Lakshmna, it would not have been possible for you to stand there, like a dog under the gaze of a pair of tigers.
தஸ்ய தே விக்ரஹே தாப்யாஂ யுகக்ரஹணமஸ்திரம்৷৷5.21.32৷৷
வரித்ரஸ்யேவேந்த்ரபாஹுப்யாஂ பாஹோரேகஸ்ய விக்ரஹே.
வரித்ரஸ்யேவேந்த்ரபாஹுப்யாஂ பாஹோரேகஸ்ய விக்ரஹே.

"You will not be able to withstand them in a battle. You will meet the same fate as the one-armed Vritra in a battle with the two-armed Indra.

தோயமல்பமிவாதித்யஃ ப்ராணாநாதாஸ்யதே ஷரைஃ.

மே நாதஃ my lord, ஸஃ ராமஃ that Rama, ஸௌமித்ரிணா ஸஹ accompanied by Saumitri, ஆதித்யஃ the Sun, அல்பம் shallow, தோயமிவ like water, ஷரைஃ by arrows, தவ your, ப்ராணாந் life, க்ஷிப்ரம் at once, தாஸ்யதே will take away.
"My lord Rama accompanied by Saumitri will draw out your life by his arrows swiftly as Aditya sucks up shallow water at once by his radiance.
கிரிஂ குபேரஸ்ய கதோத வாலயஂ ஸபாஂ கதோ வா வருணஸ்ய ராஜ்ஞஃ.
அஸஂஷயஂ தாஷரதேர்ந மோக்ஷ்யஸே மஹாத்ருமஃ காலஹதோஷநேரிவ৷৷5.21.34৷৷

காலஹதஃ doomed by time, குபேரஸ்ய Kubera's, கிரிம் mountain, வா or else, ஆலயம் residence,
கதஃ going, ராஜ்ஞஃ king, வருணஸ்ய Varuna's, ஸபாம் assembly, கதோ வா or will go, மஹாத்ருமஃ mighty tree, அஷநேரிவ by lightning, தாஷரதேஃ by Rama son of Dasaratha, ந மோக்ஷ்யஸே you do not escape.
"Even if you fly to Kubera's mountain (Kailasa) or the residence of king Varuna (ocean) you will not escape Rama's arrows like a mighty tree cannot evade lightning.
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே ஸுந்தரகாண்டே ஏகவிஂஷஸ்ஸர்கஃ.
Thus ends the twentyfirst sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
