King Ravana, tormentor of enemies, having thus spoken to Mythili commanded the demonesses and departed.

രാക്ഷസേന്ദ്രേ the lord of demons, നിഷ്ക്രാന്തേ having left, പുനഃ again, അന്തഃപുരമ് to the inner chambers, ഗതേ gone, ഭീമരൂപാഃ women of hideous appearance, താഃ those, രാക്ഷസ്യ: demonesses, സീതാമ് Sita, സമഭിദുദ്രുവുഃ ran to her.
As the demon king left for his abode all the demonesses of hideous looks rushed towards Sita and crowded around her.

The demonesses, overcome with anger, approached Sita and harshly said:

'O Sita! don't you think it is a privilege to be the wife of the high-souled, ten-necked Ravana, who is the distinguished king of a high family of sage Paulastya?

തതഃ then, ഏകജടാ നാമ called Ekajata, രാക്ഷസീ she-demon, ക്രോധാതാമ്രാക്ഷീ eyes red with anger, കരതലോദരീമ് with a belly of the size of the palm, സീതാമ് Sita, ആമന്ത്യ്ര having called, വാക്യമ് these words, അബ്രവീത് spoke.
Then Ekajata, a she-demon of hideous looks, eyes red with anger and a belly of the size of the palm said to Sita:
പ്രജാപതീനാം ഷണ്ണാം തു ചതുര്ഥോ യഃ പ്രജാപതിഃ.
മാനസോ ബ്രഹ്മണഃ പുത്രഃ പുലസ്ത്യ ഇതി വിശ്രുതഃ৷৷5.23.6৷৷

ഷണ്ണാമ് of the six, പ്രജാപതീനാമ് of Prajapatis, യഃ he who was, ചതുര്ഥഃ fourth, പ്രജാപതിഃ, ബ്രഹ്മണഃ Brahma, മാനസഃ born out of mind, പുത്രഃ a son, പുലസ്ത്യഃ Pulastya, ഇതി thus, വിശ്രുതഃ very famous.
'The mind-born son of Brahma is well known as Paulastya. He was the fourth among the six Prajapatis (Maricha, Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Plaha, Kratu).

നാമ്നാ with the name, വിശ്രവാ നാമ Vishravas by name, പ്രജാപതിസമപ്രഭഃ equal in splendour to Prajapati, തേജസ്വീ glorious, സഃ മഹര്ഷിഃ that sage, പുലസ്ത്യസ്യ Pulastya's, മാനസഃ mind-born, സുതഃ son.
'This glorious mind-born sage Pulastya's son is the famous Vishrava who, in glory and splendour was equal to Prajapatis.

'O large-eyes lady! to become the wife of the lord of demons is a stroke of good luck. You deserve to be one. O lady of beautiful limbs! why don't you accept his proposal?'

തതഃ then, മാര്ജാരസദൃശേക്ഷണാ cat-eyed, ഹരിജടാ നാമ called Harijata, രാക്ഷസീ ogress, കോപാത് with anger, നയനേ both eyes, വിവര്ത്യ rolling, വാക്യമ് these words, അബ്രവീത് said.
Then an ogress called Harijata said this in anger, her cat-eyes rolling:
യേന ദേവാസ്ത്രയസ്ത്രിംശദ്ദേവരാജശ്ച നിര്ജിതാഃ৷৷5.23.10৷৷
തസ്യ ത്വം രാക്ഷസേന്ദ്രസ്യ ഭാര്യാ ഭവിതുമര്ഹസി.
തസ്യ ത്വം രാക്ഷസേന്ദ്രസ്യ ഭാര്യാ ഭവിതുമര്ഹസി.

Then an ogress named Praghasa, overwhelmed with anger, deriding Sita said these terrible words:
വീര്യോത്സിക്തസ്യ ശൂരസ്യ സങ്ഗ്രാമേഷു നിവര്തിനഃ৷৷5.23.12৷৷
ബലിനോ വീര്യയുക്തസ്യ ഭാര്യാത്വം കിം ന ലപ്സ്യസേ.

വീര്യോത്സിക്തസ്യ Valiant, ശൂരസ്യ hero's, സങ്ഗ്രാമേഷു in wars, അനിവര്തിനഃ hero who never retreats, ബലിനഃ powerful, വീര്യയുക്തസ്യ mighty one, ഭാര്യാത്വമ് to be a wife, കിമ് why, ന ലപ്സ്യസേ not wishing.
'Why don't you wish to be the wife of such a mighty and powerful king, a valiant hero who has never beaten a retreat in war?

'Even renouncing his highly respectable, favourite wife among all, mighty Ravana is prepared to accept you.

'Ravana is prepared to abandon a thousand wives in his prosperous harem decorated with all kinds of gems in order to accept you.'

വികടാ നാമ called Vikata, അന്യാ other, രാക്ഷസീ തു ogress also, വാക്യമ് these words, അബ്രവീത് spoke, യേന by whom, അസകൃത് often, യുദ്ധേ in war, ദേവതാഃ gods, സമരേ in war, നാഗഗന്ധര്വദാനവാഃ nagas, gandharvas and demons, നിര്ജിതാഃ vanquished, സഃ he, തേ your, പാര്ശ്വമ് side, ആഗതഃ has come to you.
Another ogress called Vikata said, ' Know that he who has often defeated gods in war and has vanquished nagas, gandharvas and demons has come to you (seeking your favour)'.
തസ്യ സര്വസമൃദ്ധസ്യ രാവണസ്യ മഹാത്മനഃ.

അധമേ O foolish woman, സര്വസമൃദ്ധസ്യ who has abundance of wealth, മഹാത്മനഃ great self, രാക്ഷസേന്ദ്രസ്യ of the lord of ogres, തസ്യ his, രാവണസ്യ Ravana's, ഭാര്യാത്വമ് to be wife, അദ്യ now, കിമ് why, നേച്ഛസേ do not you desire
'O foolish woman! why don't you seek the wifehood of a glorious king of demons who has abundance of wealth?'

Then an ogress called Durmukhi said, 'O lady of long side-glances! why don't you yield to him, afraid of whom the Sun scorches not and strong winds blow not?
പുഷ്പവൃഷ്ടിം ച തരവോ മുമുചുര്യസ്യ വൈ ഭയാത്৷৷5.23.19৷৷
ശൈലാശ്ച സുഭ്രു പാനീയം ജലദാശ്ച യദേച്ഛതി.

സുഭ്രു lady with beautiful eye-brows, ഭാമിനി radiant one, യസ്യ whose, ഭയാത് fear, തരവഃ trees, പുഷ്പവൃഷ്ടിമ് rain of flowers, മുമുചുഃ released, യദാ whenever, ഇച്ഛതി wishes, ശൈലാശ്ച even mountains, ജലദാശ്ച clouds also, പാനീയമ് water, നൈരൃതരാജസ്യ for the king of the
south-west, Ravana, രാജരാജസ്യ king of kings, തസ്യ his, രാവണസ്യ Ravana's, ഭാര്യാര്ഥേ to become his wife, ബുദ്ധിമ് mind accepting, ത്വമ് you, കിമ് why, ന കുരുഷേ not wishing?
'O lady of beautiful brows! why don't you make up your mind to accept the king of kings, afraid of whom the trees rain flowers, the mountains and clouds release water at his will? Ravana is the king of the south-west, direction Why don't you wish to be his wife?
സാധു തേ തത്ത്വതോ ദേവി കഥിതം സാധു ഭാമിനി৷৷5.23.21৷৷
ഗൃഹാണ സുസ്മിതേ വാക്യമന്യഥാ ന ഭവിഷ്യസി.

'O beautiful lady with a gentle smile! we have tendered good advice to you wishing you well. Accept this advice or else you may not be alive.'
ഇത്യാര്ഷേ ശ്രീമദ്രാമായണേ വാല്മീകീയ ആദികാവ്യേ സുന്ദരകാണ്ഡേ ത്രയോവിംശസ്സര്ഗഃ.
Thus ends the twentythird sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
