ராஜா king, ஷத்ருராவணஃ tormentor of enemies, ராவணஃ Ravana, மைதிலீம் Mythili, இதி thus, உக்த்வா having spoken, ததஃ thereafter, ஸர்வாஃ all, ராக்ஷஸீஃ demonesses, ஸந்திஷ்ய ச having commanded, நிர்ஜகாம departed.
King Ravana, tormentor of enemies, having thus spoken to Mythili commanded the demonesses and departed.
நிஷ்க்ராந்தே ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரே து புநரந்தஃபுரஂ கதே.

ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரே the lord of demons, நிஷ்க்ராந்தே having left, புநஃ again, அந்தஃபுரம் to the inner chambers, கதே gone, பீமரூபாஃ women of hideous appearance, தாஃ those, ராக்ஷஸ்ய: demonesses, ஸீதாம் Sita, ஸமபிதுத்ருவுஃ ran to her.
As the demon king left for his abode all the demonesses of hideous looks rushed towards Sita and crowded around her.
ததஃ ஸீதாமுபாகம்ய ராக்ஷஸ்யஃ க்ரோதமூர்சிதாஃ.

ததஃ then, ராக்ஷஸ்யஃ demonesses, ஸீதாம் to Sita, உபாகம்ய went near, க்ரோதமூர்சிதாஃ senses lost in anger, பரம் very, பருஷயா harsh, வாசா words, வைதேஹீம் Vaidehi, இதம் thus, அப்ருவந் spoke.
The demonesses, overcome with anger, approached Sita and harshly said:
பௌலஸ்த்யஸ்ய வரிஷ்டஸ்ய ராவணஸ்ய மஹாத்மநஃ.
தஷக்ரீவஸ்ய பார்யா த்வஂ ஸீதே ந பஹுமந்யஸே৷৷5.23.4৷৷

'O Sita! don't you think it is a privilege to be the wife of the high-souled, ten-necked Ravana, who is the distinguished king of a high family of sage Paulastya?
ததஸ்த்வேகஜடா நாம ராக்ஷஸீ வாக்யமப்ரவீத்.

ததஃ then, ஏகஜடா நாம called Ekajata, ராக்ஷஸீ she-demon, க்ரோதாதாம்ராக்ஷீ eyes red with anger, கரதலோதரீம் with a belly of the size of the palm, ஸீதாம் Sita, ஆமந்த்ய்ர having called, வாக்யம் these words, அப்ரவீத் spoke.
Then Ekajata, a she-demon of hideous looks, eyes red with anger and a belly of the size of the palm said to Sita:
ப்ரஜாபதீநாஂ ஷண்ணாஂ து சதுர்தோ யஃ ப்ரஜாபதிஃ.
மாநஸோ ப்ரஹ்மணஃ புத்ரஃ புலஸ்த்ய இதி விஷ்ருதஃ৷৷5.23.6৷৷

ஷண்ணாம் of the six, ப்ரஜாபதீநாம் of Prajapatis, யஃ he who was, சதுர்தஃ fourth, ப்ரஜாபதிஃ, ப்ரஹ்மணஃ Brahma, மாநஸஃ born out of mind, புத்ரஃ a son, புலஸ்த்யஃ Pulastya, இதி thus, விஷ்ருதஃ very famous.
'The mind-born son of Brahma is well known as Paulastya. He was the fourth among the six Prajapatis (Maricha, Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Plaha, Kratu).
புலஸ்த்யஸ்ய து தேஜஸ்வீ மஹர்ஷிர்மாநஸஃ ஸுதஃ.
நாம்நா ஸ விஷ்ரவா நாம ப்ரஜாபதிஸமப்ரபஃ৷৷5.23.7৷৷

நாம்நா with the name, விஷ்ரவா நாம Vishravas by name, ப்ரஜாபதிஸமப்ரபஃ equal in splendour to Prajapati, தேஜஸ்வீ glorious, ஸஃ மஹர்ஷிஃ that sage, புலஸ்த்யஸ்ய Pulastya's, மாநஸஃ mind-born, ஸுதஃ son.
'This glorious mind-born sage Pulastya's son is the famous Vishrava who, in glory and splendour was equal to Prajapatis.
தஸ்ய புத்ரோ விஷாலாக்ஷி ராவணஃ ஷத்ருராவணஃ.
தஸ்ய த்வஂ ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய பார்யா பவிதுமர்ஹஸி৷৷5.23.8৷৷
மயோக்தஂ சாருஸர்வாங்கிஃ வாக்யஂ கிஂ நாநுமந்யஸே.

விஷாலாக்ஷி a large-eyed lady, ஷத்ருராவண: a tormentor of enemies, ராவணஃ Ravana, தஸ்ய his, புத்ரஃ son, த்வம் you, ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய lord of demons, தஸ்ய his, பார்யா wife, பவிதும் to become, அர்ஹஸி you deserve, சாருஸர்வாங்கி a lady of beautiful limbs, மயா by me, உக்தம் spoken, வாக்யம் words, கிம் why, நாநுமந்யஸே not heeding.
'O large-eyes lady! to become the wife of the lord of demons is a stroke of good luck. You deserve to be one. O lady of beautiful limbs! why don't you accept his proposal?'
ததோ ஹரிஜடா நாம ராக்ஷஸீ வாக்யமப்ரவீத்৷৷5.23.9৷৷
விவர்த்ய நயநே கோபாந்மார்ஜாரஸதரிஷேக்ஷணா.
விவர்த்ய நயநே கோபாந்மார்ஜாரஸதரிஷேக்ஷணா.
ததஃ then, மார்ஜாரஸதரிஷேக்ஷணா cat-eyed, ஹரிஜடா நாம called Harijata, ராக்ஷஸீ ogress, கோபாத் with anger, நயநே both eyes, விவர்த்ய rolling, வாக்யம் these words, அப்ரவீத் said.
Then an ogress called Harijata said this in anger, her cat-eyes rolling:
யேந தேவாஸ்த்ரயஸ்த்ரிஂஷத்தேவராஜஷ்ச நிர்ஜிதாஃ৷৷5.23.10৷৷
தஸ்ய த்வஂ ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய பார்யா பவிதுமர்ஹஸி.
தஸ்ய த்வஂ ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய பார்யா பவிதுமர்ஹஸி.
யேந by him, த்ரயஸ்த்ரிஂஷத் thirtythree, தேவாஃ gods, தேவராஜஷ்ச Indra, king of the gods, நிர்ஜிதாஃ are conquered, தஸ்ய his, ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய of the lord of ogres, த்வம் you, பார்யா wife, பவிதும் to become, அர்ஹஸி you ought to be.
'You ought to be the wife of the lord of ogres who has vanquished thirty three crores of gods including Indra, their king.'

ததஃ then, ப்ரகஸா நாம named Praghasa, ராக்ஷஸீ ogress, க்ரோதமூர்சிதா overwhelmed with anger, ததா then, பர்த்ஸயந்தீ deriding, கோரம் terrific manner, இதம் these, வசநஂ து words also, அப்ரவீத் spoke.
Then an ogress named Praghasa, overwhelmed with anger, deriding Sita said these terrible words:
வீர்யோத்ஸிக்தஸ்ய ஷூரஸ்ய ஸங்க்ராமேஷு நிவர்திநஃ৷৷5.23.12৷৷
பலிநோ வீர்யயுக்தஸ்ய பார்யாத்வஂ கிஂ ந லப்ஸ்யஸே.
பலிநோ வீர்யயுக்தஸ்ய பார்யாத்வஂ கிஂ ந லப்ஸ்யஸே.
வீர்யோத்ஸிக்தஸ்ய Valiant, ஷூரஸ்ய hero's, ஸங்க்ராமேஷு in wars, அநிவர்திநஃ hero who never retreats, பலிநஃ powerful, வீர்யயுக்தஸ்ய mighty one, பார்யாத்வம் to be a wife, கிம் why, ந லப்ஸ்யஸே not wishing.
'Why don't you wish to be the wife of such a mighty and powerful king, a valiant hero who has never beaten a retreat in war?
ப்ரியாஂ பஹுமதாஂ பார்யாஂ த்யக்த்வா ராஜா மஹாபலஃ৷৷5.23.13৷৷
ஸர்வாஸாஂ ச மஹாபாகாஂ த்வாமுபைஷ்யதி ராவணஃ.

ராஜா king, மஹாபலஃ mighty, ராவணஃRavana, ப்ரியாம் his dear, பஹுமதாம் favourrite lady, ஸர்வாஸாம் of all, மஹாபாகாம் highly respectable, பார்யாம் wife, த்யக்த்வா renouncing, த்வாம் you, உபைஷ்யதி he is desirous
'Even renouncing his highly respectable, favourite wife among all, mighty Ravana is prepared to accept you.
ஸமரித்தஂ ஸ்த்ரீஸஹஸ்ரேண நாநாரத்நோபஷோபிதம்৷৷5.23.14৷৷
அந்தஃபுரஂ ஸமுத்ஸரிஜ்ய த்வாமுபைஷ்யதி ராவணஃ.

ராவணஃ Ravana, ஸ்த்ரீஸஹஸ்ரேண with a thousand wives, ஸமரித்தம் rich, நாநாரத்நோபஷோபிதம் decorated with many gems, அந்தஃபுரம் inner chambers, ஸமுத்ஸரிஜ்ய abandoning, த்வாம் you, உபைஷ்யதி is desiring.
'Ravana is prepared to abandon a thousand wives in his prosperous harem decorated with all kinds of gems in order to accept you.'
அந்யா து விகடா நாம ராக்ஷஸீ வாக்யமப்ரவீத்৷৷5.23.15৷৷
அஸகரித்தேவதா யுத்தே நாககந்தர்வதாநவாஃ.
நிர்ஜிதாஃ ஸமரே யேந ஸ தே பார்ஷ்வமுபாகதஃ৷৷5.23.16৷৷

விகடா நாம called Vikata, அந்யா other, ராக்ஷஸீ து ogress also, வாக்யம் these words, அப்ரவீத் spoke, யேந by whom, அஸகரித் often, யுத்தே in war, தேவதாஃ gods, ஸமரே in war, நாககந்தர்வதாநவாஃ nagas, gandharvas and demons, நிர்ஜிதாஃ vanquished, ஸஃ he, தே your, பார்ஷ்வம் side, ஆகதஃ has come to you.
Another ogress called Vikata said, ' Know that he who has often defeated gods in war and has vanquished nagas, gandharvas and demons has come to you (seeking your favour)'.
தஸ்ய ஸர்வஸமரித்தஸ்ய ராவணஸ்ய மஹாத்மநஃ.
கிமத்ய ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய பார்யாத்வஂ நேச்சஸேதமே৷৷5.23.17৷৷

அதமே O foolish woman, ஸர்வஸமரித்தஸ்ய who has abundance of wealth, மஹாத்மநஃ great self, ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய of the lord of ogres, தஸ்ய his, ராவணஸ்ய Ravana's, பார்யாத்வம் to be wife, அத்ய now, கிம் why, நேச்சஸே do not you desire
'O foolish woman! why don't you seek the wifehood of a glorious king of demons who has abundance of wealth?'
ததஸ்து துர்முகீ நாம ராக்ஷஸீ வாக்யமப்ரவீத்.
யஸ்ய ஸூர்யோ ந தபதி பீதோ யஸ்ய ச மாருதஃ৷৷5.23.18৷৷
ந வாதி ஸ்மாயதாபாங்கே கிஂ த்வஂ தஸ்ய ந திஷ்டஸி.

ததஃ then, துர்முகீ நாம named Durmukhi, ராக்ஷஸீ ogress, வாக்யம் these words, அப்ரவீத் spoke, ஆயதாபாங்கே lady of long side glaces, யஸ்ய whose, பீதஃ by fear of whom, ஸூர்யஃ Sun, ந தபதி not scorch, யஸ்ய by whose, பீதஃ by fear of whom, மாருதஃ wind, ந வாதி ஸ்ம not blow, தஸ்ய his, த்வம் you, கிம் why, ந திஷ்டஸி not yield
Then an ogress called Durmukhi said, 'O lady of long side-glances! why don't you yield to him, afraid of whom the Sun scorches not and strong winds blow not?
புஷ்பவரிஷ்டிஂ ச தரவோ முமுசுர்யஸ்ய வை பயாத்৷৷5.23.19৷৷
ஷைலாஷ்ச ஸுப்ரு பாநீயஂ ஜலதாஷ்ச யதேச்சதி.
தஸ்ய நைரரிதராஜஸ்ய ராஜராஜஸ்ய பாமிநி ৷৷5.23.20৷৷
கிஂ த்வஂ ந குருஷே புத்திஂ பார்யார்தே ராவணஸ்ய ஹி.
ஷைலாஷ்ச ஸுப்ரு பாநீயஂ ஜலதாஷ்ச யதேச்சதி.
தஸ்ய நைரரிதராஜஸ்ய ராஜராஜஸ்ய பாமிநி ৷৷5.23.20৷৷
கிஂ த்வஂ ந குருஷே புத்திஂ பார்யார்தே ராவணஸ்ய ஹி.
ஸுப்ரு lady with beautiful eye-brows, பாமிநி radiant one, யஸ்ய whose, பயாத் fear, தரவஃ trees, புஷ்பவரிஷ்டிம் rain of flowers, முமுசுஃ released, யதா whenever, இச்சதி wishes, ஷைலாஷ்ச even mountains, ஜலதாஷ்ச clouds also, பாநீயம் water, நைரரிதராஜஸ்ய for the king of the
south-west, Ravana, ராஜராஜஸ்ய king of kings, தஸ்ய his, ராவணஸ்ய Ravana's, பார்யார்தே to become his wife, புத்திம் mind accepting, த்வம் you, கிம் why, ந குருஷே not wishing?
'O lady of beautiful brows! why don't you make up your mind to accept the king of kings, afraid of whom the trees rain flowers, the mountains and clouds release water at his will? Ravana is the king of the south-west, direction Why don't you wish to be his wife?
ஸாது தே தத்த்வதோ தேவி கதிதஂ ஸாது பாமிநி৷৷5.23.21৷৷
கரிஹாண ஸுஸ்மிதே வாக்யமந்யதா ந பவிஷ்யஸி.
கரிஹாண ஸுஸ்மிதே வாக்யமந்யதா ந பவிஷ்யஸி.
ஸுஸ்மிதே lady with a gentle smile, பாமிநி a beautiful lady, தேவி queen, தத்த்வதஃ truly, ஸாது well, தே you, கதிதம் spoken, ஸாது wishing well, வாக்யம் these words, கரிஹாண accept, அந்யதா otherwise, ந பவிஷ்யஸி will not be alive.
'O beautiful lady with a gentle smile! we have tendered good advice to you wishing you well. Accept this advice or else you may not be alive.'
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே ஸுந்தரகாண்டே த்ரயோவிஂஷஸ்ஸர்கஃ.
Thus ends the twentythird sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
