[Sita wails over her misery.]

அத தாஸாஂ வதந்தீநாஂ பருஷஂ தாருணஂ பஹு.

ராக்ஷஸீநாமாஸௌம்யாநாஂ ருரோத ஜநகாத்மஜா৷৷5.25.1৷৷


அத then, அஸௌம்யாநாம் ugly, தாஸாம் of them, ராக்ஷஸீநாம் of the ogresses, பருஷம் harsh, தாருணம் terrific, பஹு much, வதந்தீநாம் they spoke, ஜநகாத்மஜா Janaka's daughter, ருரோத cried.

On hearing the many harsh words of dire threat by the ugly ogresses, the daughter of Janaka wept.
ஏவமுக்தா து வைதேஹீ ராக்ஷஸீபிர்மநஸ்விநீ.

உவாச பரமத்ரஸ்தா பாஷ்பக்த்கதயா கிரா৷৷5.25.2৷৷


ராக்ஷஸீபிஃ by the ogresses, ஏவம் in that way, உக்தா having spoken, மநஸ்விநீ a noble lady, வைதேஹீ Vaidehi, பரமத்ரஸ்தா terribly afraid, பாஷ்பகத்கதயா throat choked, with tears, கிரா with a word, உவாச said.

In reply to the ogresses who thus spoke, noble Vaidehi, terribly frightened, said in a voice choked with tears.
ந மாநுஷீ ராக்ஷஸஸ்ய பார்யா பவிதுமர்ஹதி.

காமஂ காதத மாஂ ஸர்வா ந கரிஷ்யாமி வோ வசஃ৷৷5.25.3৷৷


மாநுஷீ a human, ராக்ஷஸஸ்ய demon's, பார்யா wife, பவிதும் to become, ந அர்ஹதி not fit, ஸர்வாஃ all, காமம் freely, மாம் me, காதத you can eat, வஃ your, வசஃ word, ந கரிஷ்யாமி I will not follow.

ஸா ராக்ஷஸீமத்யகதா ஸீதா ஸுரஸுதோபமா.

ந ஷர்ம லேபே துஃகார்தா ராவணேந ச தர்ஜிதா৷৷5.25.4৷৷


ராக்ஷஸீமத்யகதா surrounded by ogresses, ஸுரஸுதோபமா like the daughter of a divine, ராவணேந ச by Ravana, தர்ஜிதா threatened, ஸா ஸீதா that Sita, துஃகார்தா distressed, ஷர்ம solace, ந லேபே could not get.

Surrounded by the ogresses, distressed Sita, who was like the daughter of a divine, did not get any solace.
வேபதே ஸ்மாதிகஂ ஸீதா விஷந்தீ வாங்கமாத்மநஃ.

வநே யூதபரிப்ரஷ்டா மரிகீ கோகைரிவார்திதா৷৷5.25.5৷৷


வநே in the forest, யூதபரிப்ரஷ்டா strayed from the herd, கோகைஃ by wolves, அர்திதா tormented, மரிகீவ like a doe, ஸீதா Sita, ஆத்மநஃ herself, அங்கம் her limbs, விஷந்திஃ withdrawing herself, அதிகம் excessively, வேபதே ஸ்ம trembled.

'Like a doe that strayed from the herd in the forest and tormented by wolves around, Sita had withdrawn into herself all her limbs through fear, she was trembling excessively.
ஸா த்வஷோகஸ்ய விபுலாஂ ஷாகாமாலம்ப்ய புஷ்பிதாம்.

சிந்தயாமாஸ ஷோகேந பர்தாரஂ பக்நமாநஸா৷৷5.25.6৷৷


ஷோகேந with grief, பக்நமாநஸா with a broken heart, ஸா she, அஷோகஸ்ய Ashoka tree, புஷ்பிதாம் flowered, விபுலாம் large, ஷாகாம் branch, ஆலம்ப்ய laying hold on, பர்தாரம் of her husband, சிந்தயாமாஸ thought.

Laying hold on a large blossoming branch of the Ashoka tree, Sita thought of her husband with a broken heart.
ஸா ஸ்நாபயந்தீ விபுலௌ ஸ்தநௌ நேத்ரஜலஸ்ரவைஃ.

சிந்தயந்தீ ந ஷோகஸ்ய ததாந்தமதிகச்சதி৷৷5.25.7৷৷


ததா then, ஸா she, நேத்ரஜலஸ்ரவைஃ with the flow of tears, விபுலௌ large, ஸ்தநௌ breasts, ஸ்நாபயந்தீ bathing them, சிந்தயந்தீ brooding, ஷோகஸ்ய of sorrow, அந்தம் end, ந அதிகச்சதி could not find.

Her large breasts bathed with the flow of tears, she continued to brood over her plight and found no end to it.
ஸா வேபமாநா பதிதா ப்ரவாதே கதலீ யதா.

ராக்ஷஸீநாஂ பயத்ரஸ்தா விவர்ணவதநாபவத்৷৷5.25.8৷৷


ஸா she, ப்ரவாதே to stormy wind, பதிதா fallen, கதலீ யதா like a banana plant, வேபமாநா trembling, ராக்ஷஸீநாஂ of the ogresses, பயஂத்ரஸ்தா frightened, விவர்ணவதநா pale-faced, அபவத் became.

Trembling like a banana tree uprooted by the stormy wind, Sita who was seized with fear of the ogresses looked pale and desperate.
தஸ்யாஃ ஸா தீர்கவிபுலா வேபந்த்யா ஸீதயா ததா.

ததரிஷே கம்பிநீ வேணீ வ்யாலீவ பரிஸர்பதீ৷৷5.25.9৷৷


வேபந்த்யாஃ of the trembling Sita, தஸ்யாஃ her, தீர்கவிபுலா long and luxuriant, கம்பிநீ shaking, ஸா that, ஸீதயா by Sita, வேணீ braid, பரிஸர்பதீ moving, வ்யாலீவ like a female serpent, ததரிஷே appeared.

The long, luxuriant braid of hair of the trembling Sita waving (in the wind), appeared like a crawling female serpent.
ஸா நிஃஷ்வஸந்தீ துஃகார்தா ஷோகோபஹதசேதநா.

ஆர்தா வ்யஸரிஜதஷ்ரூணி மைதிலீ விலலாப ச৷৷5.25.10৷৷


துஃகார்தா distressed lady, ஷோகோபஹதசேதநா consciousness drowned in tears, ஆர்தா afflicted, ஸா she, மைதிலீ Mythili, நிஃஷ்வஸந்தீ while sighing, அஷ்ரூணி tears, வ்யஸரிஜத் shedding, விலலாப ஹ cried.

The distressed Mythili, her consciousness drowned in grief, sighing, shed streams of tears.
ஹா ராமேதி ச துஃகார்தா ஹா புநர்லக்ஷ்மணேதி ச.

ஹா ஷ்வஷ்ரு மம கௌஸல்யே ஹா ஸுமித்ரேதி பாமிநீ৷৷5.25.11৷৷


பாமிநீ beautiful lady, துஃகார்தா afflicted, ஹா ராமேதி alas, Rama, புநஃ again, ஹா லக்ஷ்மணேதி alas, Lakshmana, மம my, ஷ்வஷ்ரு mother-in-law, ஹா கௌஸல்யே alas, Kausalya, ஹா ஸுமித்ரேதி alas, Sumitra.

'The bright, beautiful Sita began to wail, alas, "Rama! alas, Lakshmana! alas, my mother-in-law, Kausalya! alas, Sumitra!
லோகப்ரவாதஃ ஸத்யோயஂ பண்டிதைஃ ஸமுதாஹரிதஃ.

அகாலே துர்லபோ மரித்யுஃ ஸ்த்ரியா வா புருஷஸ்ய வா৷৷5.25.12৷৷

யதஹமேவஂ க்ரூராபீ ராக்ஷஸீபிரிஹார்திதா.

ஜீவாமி ஹீநா ராமேண முஹூர்தமபி துஃகிதா৷৷5.25.13৷৷


அஹம் I, ஏவம் in this way, க்ரூராபிஃ by cruel, ராக்ஷஸீபிஃ by ogresses, அர்திதா tormented, இஹ here, ராமேண from Rama, ஹீநா separated from, துஃகார்தா afflicted, முஹூர்தமபி even a moment, யதா such being the fact, ஜீவாமி I live, ஸ்த்ரியா வா by a woman or, புருஷஸ்ய வா or for a man, அகாலே untimely, மரித்யுஃ death, துர்லபஃ is difficult, பண்டிதைஃ by the learned, ஸமுதாஹரிதஃ quoted, லோகப்ரவாதஃ among people, ஸத்யஃ truth.

'There is a famous popular saying among the learned that untimely death is not
possible either for a woman or a man.It is true that I am living in this miserable condition, deprived of Rama's company and tormented by these cruel ogresses here. Living in such conditions even for a moment is impossible. But nobody dies an untimely death.
ஏஷால்பபுண்யா கரிபணா விநஷிஷ்யாம்யநாதவத்.

ஸமுத்ரமத்யே நௌஃ பூர்ணா வாயுவேகைரிவாஹதா৷৷5.25.14৷৷


அல்பபுண்யா a lowly women, கரிபணா a wretched, ஏஷா here I am, அநாதவத் like an orphan, ஸமுத்ரமத்யே in the midst of ocean, வாயுவேகைஃ by the speed of the wind, ஆஹதா hit, பூர்ணா full, நௌஃ இவ like a boat, விநஷிஷ்யாமி will be ruined.

'I am a woman of low merit, a wretched woman, an orphan. I will be ruined like the loaded boat that gets hit in the midst of the ocean by the stormy wind.
பர்தாரஂ தமபஷ்யந்தீ ராக்ஷஸீவஷமாகதா.

ஸீதாமி கலு ஷோகேந கூலஂ தோயஹதஂ யதா৷৷5.25.15৷৷


பர்தாரம் husband, தம் him, அபஷ்யந்தீ not finding, ராக்ஷஸீவஷம் under control of the ogresses, ஆகதா reached, தோயஹதம் eroded by water, தீரஂ யதா like the bank of a river, ஷோகேந on account of grief, ஸீதாமி கலு I am collapsing indeed.

'Unable to find my husband and seized by these ogresses, I am collapsing on account of grief like a river-bank under the current of water.
தஂ பத்மதலபத்ராக்ஷஂ ஸிஂஹவிக்ராந்தகாமிநம்.

தந்யாஃ பஷ்யந்தி மே நாதஂ கரிதஜ்ஞஂ ப்ரியவாதிநம்৷৷5.25.16৷৷


பத்மதலபத்ராக்ஷஂ one who has eyes like lotus petals, ஸிஂஹவிக்ராந்தகாமிநம் one who walks majestically like a lion, கரிதஜ்ஞம் grateful one, ப்ரியவாதிநம் sweet in his talk, தம் him, மே my, நாதம் lord, தந்யாஃ blessed, பஷ்யந்தி can see.

'Blessed are those who are in touch with my husband with eyes like lotus petals, whose walk is majestic like a lion's, who has a sense of gratitude and is pleasing in words.
ஸர்வதா தேந ஹீநாயா ராமேண விதிதாத்மநா.

தீக்ஷ்ணஂ விஷமிவாஸ்வாத்ய துர்லபஂ மம ஜீவிதம்৷৷5.25.17৷৷


விதிதாத்மநா endowed with self-knowledge, தேந by him, ராமேண by Rama, ஹீநாயாஃ separated, மம my, தீக்ஷ்ணம் deadly, விஷம் poison, ஆஸ்வாத்யேவ like one who has drunk, ஜீவிதம் life, ஸர்வதா by all means, துர்லபம் impossible.

'Separated from Rama endowed with self-knowledge, it is impossible for me to live like one who has drunk venom.
கீதரிஷஂ து மஹாபாபஂ மயா ஜந்மாந்தரே கரிதம்.

யநேதஂ ப்ராப்யதே துஃகஂ மயா கோரஂ ஸுதாருணம்৷৷5.25.18৷৷


யேந by such a manner, மயா by me, கோரம் terrific, ஸுதாருணம் very cruel, இதம் this, துஃகம் sorrow, ப்ராப்யதே experienced, கீதரிஷம் what type of, மஹாபாபம் great sin, மயா by me, ஜந்மாந்தரே in my past life, கரிதம் is done.

'I do not know what great sin I have committed in my past life for which I experience this terrific, cruel affliction?
ஜீவிதஂ த்யக்துமிச்சாமி ஷோகேந மஹதா வரிதா.

ராக்ஷஸீபிஷ்ச ரக்ஷந்த்யா ராமோ நாஸாத்யதே மயா৷৷5.25.19৷৷


மஹதா with great, ஷோகேந by sorrow, அவரிதா filled, ஜீவிதம் life, த்யக்தும் to give up, இச்சாமி I long, ராமஃ Rama, மயா by me, நாஸாத்யதே reach, ராக்ஷஸீபிஃ by ogresses, ஸுரக்ஷிதா I am well-guarded.

'I long to give up my life, afflicted with great grief, as I, well-guarded by these ogresses, have no hope to reach Rama.
திகஸ்து கலு மாநுஷ்யஂ திகஸ்து பரவஷ்யதாம்.

ந ஷக்யஂ யத்பரித்யக்துமாத்மச்சந்தேந ஜீவிதம்৷৷5.25.20৷৷


மாநுஷ்யம் human, திக் அஸ்து what a pitiable situation, பரவஷ்யதாம் dependance, திக் அஸ்து fie upon, யத் since, ஆத்மச்சந்தேந although I wish, ஜீவிதம் life, பரித்யக்தும் to give up, ந ஷக்யம் கலு not able.

'Fie upon this human life. Fie upon this dependence. What a pitiable situation I am placed in. It is not possible for me, a human, to give up life at my free will.'
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே ஸுந்தரகாண்டே பஞ்சவிஂஷஸ்ஸர்கஃ.
Thus ends the twentyfifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
