[Hanuman sings the story of glory of Rama within Sita's hearing.]

ఏవం బహువిధాం చిన్తాం చిన్తయిత్వా మహాకపిః.

సంశ్రవే మధురం వాక్యం వైదేహ్యా వ్యాజహార హ৷৷5.31.1৷৷


మహాకపిః great vanara, ఏవమ్ thus, బహువిధామ్ in several ways, చిన్తామ్ thought, చిన్తయిత్వా deliberating in his mind, వైదేహ్యాః Vaidehi's, సంశ్రవే hearing, మధురమ్ sweet, వాక్యమ్ words, వ్యాజహార హ spoke.

After deliberating in several ways the great Hanuman spoke these sweet words to Vaidehi:
రాజా దశరథో నామ రథకుఞ్జరవాజిమాన్.

పుణ్యశీలో మహాకీర్తిరిక్ష్వాకూణాం మహాయశాః৷৷5.31.2৷৷


రథకుఞ్జరవాజిమాన్ with chariots, elephants and horses, పుణ్యశీలః foremost in merits, మహాకీర్తిః renowned, ఇక్ష్వాకూణామ్ in Ikshvaku race, మహాయశాః illustrious, దశరథో నామ called Dasaratha, రాజా king.

"There was an illustrious king called Dasaratha in Ikshvaku race, a master of chariots, elephants and horses. He was highly meritorious and renowned.
రాజర్షీణాం గుణశ్రేష్ఠస్తపసా చర్షిభి స్సమః.

చక్రవర్తికులే జాతః పురన్దరసమో బలే৷৷5.31.3৷৷


రాజర్షీణామ్ among sage-like kings, గుణశ్రేష్ఠః most virtuous one, తపసా in austerity, ఋషిభిః with sages, సమః equal, చక్రవర్తికులే in a dynasty of emperors, జాతః born, బలే in might, పురన్దరసమః crusher of citadels like Indra.

"He was the most virtuous among royal sages, equal to sages in austerity, born in the race of emperors and equal to Indra in might.
అహింసారతిరక్షుద్రో ఘృణీ సత్యపరాక్రమః.

ముఖ్యశ్చేక్ష్వాకువంశస్య లక్ష్మీవాన్ లక్ష్మివర్ధనః৷৷5.31.4৷৷


అహింసారతిః committed to nonviolence, అక్షుద్రః magnanimous, ఘృణీ compassionate, సత్యపరాక్రమః one whose strength truth, ఇక్ష్వాకువంశస్య of Ikshvaku family, ముఖ్యశ్చ chief, లక్ష్మీవాన్ prosperous, లక్ష్మివర్ధనః increaser of riches.

"He was committed to nonviolence, magnanimous, compassionate and one whose strength was truth. He was not only a prosperous king of Ikshvaku family but also a promoter of prosperity of others too.
పార్థివవ్యఞ్జనైర్యుక్తః పృథుశ్రీః పార్థివర్షభః.

పృథివ్యాం చతురన్తాయాం విశ్రుతస్సుఖదస్సుఖీ৷৷5.31.5৷৷


పార్థివవ్యఞ్జనైః with signs of kingship, యుక్తః endowed, పృథుశ్రీః with vast wealth, పార్థివర్షభః a bull among rulers, చతురన్తాయామ్ surrounded by the sea, పృథివ్యామ్ on the earth, విశ్రుతః well known, సుఖదః provider of happiness (to people), సుఖీ happy man.

"Endowed with signs of kingship and vast wealth, he was a bull among rulers of the vast earth, surrounded by the sea. A happy king himself, he was well-known as a provider of happiness.
తస్య పుత్రః ప్రియో జ్యేష్ఠస్తారాధిపనిభాననః.

రామో నామ విశేషజ్ఞః శ్రేష్ఠ స్సర్వధనుష్మతామ్৷৷5.31.6৷৷


తస్య his, ప్రియః beloved, తారాధిపనిభాననః of Moon like face, విశేషజ్ఞః scholar of all knowledge, సర్వధనుష్మతామ్ among all those wielders of bow, శ్రేష్ఠః foremost, రామో నామ called Rama, జ్యేష్ఠః పుత్రః eldest son.

"His beloved eldest son Rama, whose countenance is like the full moon, is a scholar of all branches of knowledge and is foremost among the bowmen on earth.
రక్షితా స్వస్య ధర్మస్య స్వజనస్య చ రక్షితా.

రక్షితా జీవలోకస్య ధర్మస్య చ పరన్తపః৷৷5.31.7৷৷


పరన్తపః scourage of foes, స్వస్య his, ధర్మస్య of righteousness, రక్షితా a protector, స్వజనస్య of his kins, రక్షితా a protector, జీవలోకస్య of all living creatures, ధర్మస్య చ and of righteousness, రక్షితా protector.

"The scourage of enemies, he is a protector of righteousness and of his kins and all living creatures. He is an embodiment of righteousness.
తస్య సత్యాభిసన్ధస్య వృద్ధస్య వచనాత్పితుః.

సభార్యస్సహ చ భ్రాత్రా వీరః ప్రవ్రాజితో వనమ్৷৷5.31.8৷৷


సత్యాభిసన్ధస్య ever steadfast in truth, వృద్ధస్య of the aged, పితుః father, తస్య his, వచనాత్ honouring the word, వీరః hero, సభార్యః along with wife, సహ చ భ్రాత్రా and accompanied by his brother, వనమ్ forest, ప్రవ్రాజితః went as a wanderer.

"Honouring the word of his aged father who was ever steadfast in truth, Rama left for the forest along with his wife and brother.
తేన తత్ర మహారణ్యే మృగయాం పరిధావతా.

రాక్షసా నిహతాశ్శూరా బహవః కామరూపిణః৷৷5.31.9৷৷


తత్ర there, మహారణ్యే in the thick forest, మృగయామ్ hunting, పరిధావతా while chasing, తేన by him, శూరాః warriors, కామరూపిణః those who can assume any form at their will, బహవః many, రాక్షసాః demons, నిహతాః killed.

"In the deep forest he went round hunting animals and killing the demon warriors who assumed any form at their free will.
జనస్థానవధం శ్రుత్వా హతౌ చ ఖరదూషణౌ.

తతస్త్వమర్షాపహృతా జానకీ రావణేన తు৷৷5.31.10৷৷

వఞ్చయిత్వా వనే రామం మృగరూపేణ మాయయా.


తతః then, జనస్థానవధమ్ killing at Janasthana, హతౌ killed, ఖరదూషణౌ చ Khara and Dooshana, శ్రుత్వా having heard, వనే in the forest, రామమ్ Rama, మృగరూపేణ in the form of a deer, మాయయా by creating illusion, వఞ్చయిత్వా having deceived, రావణేన by Ravana, జానకీ Janaki, అమర్షాపహృతా abducted out of anger.

"Ravana having heard about the killing of all demons at Janasthana including Khara and Dooshana in the forest, deceived Rama in the guise of a deer and abducted Janaki in anger.
స మార్గమాణస్తాం దేవీం రామస్సీతామనిన్దితామ్৷৷5.31.11৷৷

ఆససాద వనే మిత్రం సుగ్రీవం నామ వానరమ్.


సః రామః that Rama, అనిన్దితామ్ sinless, దేవీమ్ goddess-like lady, తాం సీతామ్ that Sita, మార్గమాణః looking for, వనే in the forest, సుగ్రీవం నామ called Sugriva, వానరమ్ monkey, మిత్రమ్ friendship, ఆససాద met.

"While looking for the goddess-like lady, the sinless Sita in the forest, Rama met a monkey called Sugriva and made friendship with him
తత స్స వాలినం హత్వా రామః పరపురఞ్జయః৷৷5.31.12৷৷

ప్రాయచ్ఛత్కపిరాజ్యం తత్సుగ్రీవాయ మహాబలః.


తతః then, పరపురఞ్జయః one who can win over enemy forts, మహాబలః powerful, సః రామః that Rama, వాలినమ్ that Vali, హత్వా having killed, తత్ that, కపిరాజ్యమ్ kingdom of the monkeys, సుగ్రీవాయ to Sugriva, ప్రాయచ్ఛత్ offered.

"Rama, a powerful king, who can win enemy forts killed Vali and offered the monkey kingdom to Sugriva.
సుగ్రీవేణాపి సన్దిష్టా హరయః కామరూపిణః৷৷5.31.13৷৷

దిక్షు సర్వాసు తాం దేవీం విచిన్వన్తి సహస్రశః.


సుగ్రీవేణ by Sugriva, సన్దిష్టాః received orders, కామరూపిణః those who can assume any form, కపయః monkeys, సహస్రశః in thousands, సర్వాసు all over, దిక్షు in directions, తాం దేవీమ్ that divine queen, విచిన్వన్తి are searching.

"Having received Sugriva's orders thousands of monkeys who can assume any form went searching for that divine queen in all directions.
అహం సమ్పాతివచనాచ్ఛతయోజనమాయతమ్৷৷5.31.14৷৷

అస్యా హేతోర్విశాలాక్ష్యాః సాగరం వేగవాన్ప్లుతః.


అహమ్ I am, సమ్పాతివచనాత్ by the words of Sampati, వేగవాన్ swiftly, అస్యాః for her, విశాలాక్ష్యాః large-eyed, హేతోః for the cause, శతయోజనమ్ a hundred yojanas, ఆయతమ్ wide, సాగరమ్ ocean, ప్లుతః leaped.

"On hearing the words of Sampati I leaped the wide ocean swiftly crossing a hundred yojanas in quest of the large-eyed Sita.
యథారూపాం యథావర్ణాం యథాలక్ష్మీవతీం చ నిశ్చితామ్৷৷5.31.15৷৷

అశ్రౌషం రాఘవస్యాహం సేయమాసాదితా మయా.


అహమ్ I, రాఘవస్య Raghava's, తామ్ her, యథారూపామ్ of a similar form, యథావర్ణామ్ of the same complexion, యథాలక్ష్మీ of similar glow, అశ్రౌషమ్ I heard, సా she, ఇయమ్ the same one, మయా by me, ఆసాదితా has been found.

"Surely I have seen here a lady of similar body, of similar complexion, of similar glow and beauty as described by Rama".
విరరామైవముక్త్వాసౌ వాచం వానరపుఙ్గవః৷৷5.31.16৷৷

జానకీ చాపి తచ్ఛ్రుత్వా పరం విస్మయమాగతా.


అసౌ he, వానరపుఙ్గవః chief of the vanaras, ఏవమ్ in that way, వాచమ్ word, ఉక్త్వా having spoken, విరరామ stopped, జానకీ చాపి even Janaki, తత్ that, శ్రుత్వా having heard, పరమ్ great, విస్మయమ్ wonder, ఆగతా felt.

Having spoken thus, the great vanara stopped speaking after that. Janaki was wonder-struck by the words of the vanara.
తతస్సా వక్రకేశాన్తా సుకేశీ కేశసంవృతమ్৷৷5.31.17৷৷

ఉన్నమ్య వదనం భీరుశ్శింశుపావృక్షమైక్షత.


తతః then, వక్రకేశాన్తా one who had hair curled up at the ends, భీరుః (timid) lady, క్లేశసంవృతమ్ covered with hanging hair, సా she, వదనమ్ face, ఉన్నమ్య by raising, శింశుపావృక్షమ్ Simsupa tree, ఐక్షత looked up.

Then Sita looked up at the Simsupa tree timidly, her face covered with beautiful curly hair.
నిశమ్య సీతా వచనం కపేశ్చ దిశశ్చ సర్వాః ప్రదిశశ్చ వీక్ష్య.

స్వయం ప్రహర్షం పరమం జగామ సర్వాత్మనా రామమనుస్మరన్తీ ৷৷5.31.18৷৷


సీతా Sita, కపేః Hanuman's, వచనమ్ word, నిశమ్య after hearing, సర్వాః all, దిశశ్చ directions, ప్రదిశశ్చ and quarters, వీక్ష్య after observing, స్వయమ్ herself, సర్వాత్మనా self of all, రామమ్ Rama, అనుస్మరన్తీ contemplating on, పరమమ్ supreme, ప్రహర్షమ్ joy, జగామ experienced.

On hearing Hanuman's words Sita looked at all directions and quarters while quietly contemplating on Rama, the self of all and experienced supreme joy.
సా తిర్యగూర్ధ్వం చ తథాప్యధస్తాన్నిరీక్షమాణా తమచిన్త్యబుద్ధిమ్.

దదర్శ పిఙ్గాధిపతేరమాత్యం వాతాత్మజం సూర్యమివోదయస్థమ్৷৷5.31.19৷৷


సా she, తిర్యక్ obliquely, ఊర్ధ్వం చ vertically, తథాపి so also, అథస్తాత్ downward, నిరీక్షమాణా observing, అచిన్త్యబుద్ధిమ్ of unimaginable intelligence, పిఙ్గాధిపతేః of king of monkeys, అమాత్యమ్ minister, ఉదయస్థమ్ rising, సూర్యమివ like Sun, తం వాతాత్మజమ్ that son of the Wind-god, దదర్శ saw.

She looked obliquely, up, and down and saw Hanuman of unimaginable intelligence, the minister of the monkey lord, son of the Wind-god, who looked like the rising Sun.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే ఏకత్రింశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyfirst sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
