[Sita's conjucture]

tataśśākhāntarē līnaṅ dṛṣṭvā calitamānasā.

vēṣṭitārjunavastraṅ taṅ vidyutsaṅghātapiṅgalam৷৷5.32.1৷৷


tataḥ then, śākhāntarē in between the branches, līnam hidden, vēṣṭitārjunavastram clad in white, vidyutsaṅghātapiṅgalam of tawny complexion like a cluster of lightnings, tam him, dṛṣṭvā seeing, calitamānasā got perplexed.

Sita got perplexed on seeing him (Hanuman), who was tawny in complexion and looked like a cluster of lightnings, clad in white and hidden in between the branches.
sā dadarśa kapiṅ tatra praśritaṅ priyavādinam.

phullāśōkōtkarābhāsaṅ taptacāmīkarēkṣaṇam৷৷5.32.2৷৷


sā she, tatra there, phullāśōkōtkarābhāsam bright like fully-blossomed Ashoka flower, taptacāmīkarēkṣaṇam whose eyes are bright like molten gold, praśritam was readily approaching, priyavādinam one who spoke softly and pleasingly, kapim monkey, dadarśa saw.

There (on the tree) she noticed a monkey like a cluster of fully blossomed Ashoka flower, shining bright, whose eyes were glowing like pure molten gold, speaking softly and pleasingly.
maithilī cintayāmāsa vismayaṅ paramaṅ gatā.

ahō bhīmamidaṅ rūpaṅ vānarasya durāsadam৷৷5.32.3৷৷

durnirīkṣamiti jñātvā punarēva mumōha sā.


maithilī Mythili, paramam supreme, vismayam astonishment, gatā felt, cintayāmāsa began thinking,
ahō Oh!, vānarasya vanara's, durāsadam inaccessible, idam this, rūpam appearance, bhīmam frightening, durnirīkṣam impossible to look at, iti thus, jñātvā thinking, sā she, punarēva once again, mumōha fainted.

Astonisted Mythili began thinking. 'Oh! this vanara's appearance is frightening. He is terrible to look at. He is inaccessible'. Thinking over this again and again, she fainted.
vilalāpa bhṛśaṅ sītā karuṇaṅ bhayamōhitā৷৷5.32.4৷৷

rāmarāmēti duḥkhārtā lakṣmaṇēti ca bhāminī.

rurōda bahudhā sītā mandaṅ mandasvarā satī৷৷5.32.5৷৷


bhāminī a noble lady, sītā Sita, bhayamōhitā overcome with fear, duḥkhārtā sorrowful, rāmarāmēti saying Rama, Rama, lakṣmaṇēti ca and Lakshmana also, bhṛśam repeatedly, karuṇam pitiably, vilalāpa cried, sītā Sita, mandasvarā satī in low voice, bahudhā many ways, rurōda cried.

Overcome with sorrow and fear, noble Sita sobbed pitiably muttering repeatedly. 'O Rama, O Rama, O Lakshmana'.
sā taṅ dṛṣṭvā hariśrēṣṭhaṅ vinītavadupasthitam.

maithilī cintayāmāsa svapnō.yamiti bhāminī৷৷5.32.6৷৷


bhāminī noble lady, sā maithilī that Maithili, vinītavat humbly, upasthitam stood near, tam him, hariśrēṣṭham best of vanaras, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, ayam this, svapnaḥ dream, iti thus, cintayāmāsa began thinking.

Noble Sita, seeing the best of vanaras who stood near humbly, began reflecting 'Is this a dream'?
sā vīkṣamāṇā pṛthubhugnavaktraṅ śākhāmṛgēndrasya yathōktakāram.

dadarśa piṅgādhipatē ramātyaṅ vātātmajaṅ buddhimatāṅ variṣṭham৷৷5.32.7৷৷


sā she, vīkṣamāṇā was looking here and there, pṛthubhugnavaktram with a large curved face, śākhāmṛgēndrasya of the lord of monkeys, yathōktakāram obedient servant, piṅgādhipatē of the king of monkeys, amātyam minister, buddhimatām among the intelligent, variṣṭham foremost, vātātmajam son of the wind-god, dadarśa saw.

Looking here and there, she saw a monkey with a large, curved face, an obedient servant and a minister of the monkey-lord, the foremost among the intelligentia and the son of the Wind-god.
sā taṅ samīkṣyaiva bhṛśaṅ visaṅjñā gatāsukalpēna babhūva sītā.

cirēṇa saṅjñāṅ pratilabhya bhūyō vicintayāmāsa viśālanētrā৷৷5.32.8৷৷


sā sītā that Sita, tam him, samīkṣyaiva after looking at, bhṛśam greatly, visaṅjñā lost senses, gatāsukalpēva as if she was almost dead, babhūva remained, viśālanētrā large-eyed, cirēṇa after a long time, saṅjñām senses, pratilabhya after getting back, bhūyaḥ again, vicintayāmāsa started thinking

The large-eyed Sita lost her senses looking at him. She got back her senses after a long time and started thinking again:
svapnē mayā.yaṅ vikṛtō.dya dṛṣṭaśśākhāmṛgaśśāstragaṇairniṣiddhaḥ.

svastyastu rāmāya sa lakṣmaṇāya tathā piturmē janakasya rājñaḥ৷৷5.32.9৷৷


adya today, mayā by me, vikṛtaḥ an ugly form, śāstragaṇaiḥ by sastras, niṣiddhaḥ prohibited, śākhāmṛgaḥ monkey, svapnē in a dream, dṛṣṭaḥ is seen, salakṣmaṇāya for Lakshmana, rāmāya for Rama, tathā so also, mē pituḥ my father, janakasya rājñaḥ of the king Janaka, svasti auspicious, astu be

'Today I saw an ugly monkey in my dream. Its sight in a dream is inauspicious according to sastras. Let it be auspicious for Lakshmana and Rama for the sake of my father Janaka.
svapnō.pi nāyaṅ nahi mē.sti nidrā śōkēna duḥkhēna ca pīḍitāyāḥ.

sukhaṅ hi mē nāsti yatō.smi hīnā tēnēndupūrṇapratimānanēna৷৷5.32.10৷৷


ayam this, svapnō.pi even in a dream, na not, śōkēna with grief, duḥkhēna ca and with sorrow, pīḍitāyāḥ a tormented woman, mē to me, nidrā sleep, nāsti hi not there, mē to me, sukham pleasure, nāsti hi not there, yataḥ therefore, indupūrṇapratimānanēna whose face is like a fullmoon, tēna with him, hīnā devoid, asmi I am

"But no, it was not a dream for tormented by grief and sorrow I cannot have a dream. When separated from the moon-faced Rama I have no sleep or pleasure, how can I have dream?
rāmēti rāmēti sadaiva buddhyā vicintya vācā bruvatī tamēva.

tasyānurūpāṅ ca kathāṅ tadarthamēvaṅ prapaśyāmi tathā śṛṇōmi৷৷5.32.11৷৷


rāmēti rāmēti only Rama Rama, sadā aiva always, buddhyā with my brain, vicintya after thinking, tamēva him alone, bruvatī thinking of, tasya his, anurūpām favourable, tadartham for his sake, kathām talk, ēvam in this way, prapaśyāmi I am seeing, tathā so also, śṛṇōmi I am hearing.

"I am always meditating upon Rama and thinking of him alone. I am talking about things related to him. Because of that I see him and hear him.
ahaṅ hi tasyādya manōbhavēna sampīḍitā tadgatasarvabhāvā.

vicintayantī satataṅ tamēva tathaiva paśyāmi tathā śṛṇōmi৷৷5.32.12৷৷


adya now, aham I, tasya his, manōbhavēna by love for him, sampīḍitā tormented, tadgatasarvabhāvā all my thoughts immersed in him, satatam always, tamēva about him only, vicintayantī while I am thinking of, tathaiva in a similar manner, paśyāmi I am seeing, tathaiva only in such a way, śṛṇōmi I am listening.

"I am tormented by intense love for Rama, with all my thoughts immersed in him. Since I am constantly thinking of him I see him and hear words about him. (She thinks it is all hallucination.)
manōrathassyāditi cintayāmi tathāpi buddhyā ca vitarkayāmi.

kiṅ kāraṇaṅ tasya hi nāsti rūpaṅ suvyaktarūpaśca vadatyayaṅ mām৷৷5.32.13৷৷


manōrathaḥ desire, syāt may be, iti thus, cintayāmi I think, buddhyā ca thinking, tathā like that, vitarkayāmi I am deliberating, tasya its, rūpam form, nāsti hi is not seen, ayam this, suvyaktarūpaḥ seen in a manifested form, mām by me, vadati speaks, kāraṇam cause, kim what?

"I feel it is only the desire in my mind. Desire has no form. But the one who is addressing me has a form. I cannot understand this.
namō.stu vācaspatayē savajriṇē svayaṅbhuvē caiva hutāśanāya ca.

anēna cōktaṅ yadidaṅ mamāgratō vanaukasā taccha tathāstu nānyathā৷৷5.32.14৷৷


savajriṇē along with Indra, vācaspatayē for Brihaspati, svayaṅbhuvē caiva even for the creator Brahma, hutāśanāya for god of fire, ca also, namaḥ salutations, astu may be, anēna by him, vanaukasā by the resident of the forest, mama agrataḥ in front of me, yat whatever, idam this, uktam spoken, tat that, tathā true, astu may be, anyathā other than that, na not be.

"My salutations to Indra, Brihaspati, Brahma the creator and also to the fire-god. Let all those words spoken by the vanara here in front of me be true and not other than that."
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē dvātriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtysecond sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
