[Sita reveals her story to Hanuman.]

sō.vatīrya drumāttasmādvidrumapratimānanaḥ.

vinītavēṣaḥ kṛpaṇaḥ praṇipatyōpasṛtya ca৷৷5.33.1৷৷

tāmabravīnmahātējā hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ.

śirasyañjalimādhāya sītāṅ madhurayā girā৷৷5.33.2৷৷


vidrumapratimānana: whose face was like the colour of a coral, mahātējāḥ shining, mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, saḥ hanumān Hanuman, tasmāt from that, drumāt from the tree, avatīrya having climbed down, vinītavēṣaḥ dressed in a sober manner, kṛpaṇaḥ piteous, praṇipatya having offered salutations, upasṛtya went near her, śirasi on his head, añcalim having folded palms, ādhāya placed, tāṅ sītām her, Sita, madhurayā in sweet, girā words, abravīt spoke.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god whose face shone like coral, dressed in a sober manner climbed down the tree, went close to Sita, offered salutations with his palms on his head and spoke in sweet words:
kā nu padmapalāśākṣi kliṣṭakauśēyavāsini.

drumasya śākhāmālambya tiṣṭhasi tvamaninditē৷৷5.33.3৷৷


padmapalāśākṣi O one with eyes like lotus petals, kliṣṭakauśēyavāsini robed in crumpled silk, aninditē blameless lady, drumasya of the tree, śākhām branch, ālambya by holding, tiṣṭhasi you are standing, kā nu who are you?

"O blameless lady with eyes like lotus petals, in crumpled silk, holding a branch, and standing, who are you?
kimartham tava nētrābhyāṅ vāri sravati śōkajam.

puṇḍarīkapalāśābhyāṅ viprakīrṇamivōdakam৷৷5.33.4৷৷


puṇḍarīkapalāśābhyām from two petals of white lotus, viprakīrṇam trickled, udakam iva like water, tava your, nētrābhyām from your eyes, śōkajam tears of grief, vāri water, kimartham for what reason, sravati is flowing.

"Why are tears of grief flowing from your eyes like water trickling down a pair of petals of white lotuses?
surāṇāmasurāṇāṅ vā nāgagandharvarakṣasām.

yakṣāṇāṅ kinnarāṇāṅ vā kā tvaṅ bhavasi śōbhanē৷৷5.33.5৷৷


śōbhanē O auspicious one!, tvam you, surāṇām among gods, asurāṇāṅ vā or demons, nāgagandharvarakṣasām of nagas, gandharvas, rakshasas, yakṣāṇām of yakshas, kinnarāṇāṅ vā or kinneras, kā who, bhavasi you are.

"O noble lady, are you a goddess or a demoness, a naga, a gandharva, a rakshasa, a yaksha or a kinnera?
kā tvaṅ bhavasi rudrāṇāṅ marutāṅ vā varānanē.

vasūnāṅ hi varārōhē dēvatā pratibhāsi mē৷৷5.33.6৷৷


varānanē O beautiful lady!, tvam you, rudrāṇām of the Rudras, marutāṅ vā or even Marutas, vasūnām of Vasus, kā who, bhavasi you are, varārōhē O fine woman, dēvatā goddess, mē to me, pratibhāsi you appear

"O beautiful lady! Do you belong to the race of Rudras, or Marutas, or Vasus?. O noble lady, you appear a goddess to me.
ki nu candramasā hīnā patitā vibudhālayāt.

rōhiṇī jyōtiṣāṅ śrēṣṭhā śrēṣṭhasarvaguṇānvitā৷৷5.33.7৷৷


candramasā from the Moon, hīnā separated, vibudhālayāt from the abode of the gods, patitā fallen down, jyōtiṣām among the luminaries, śrēṣṭhā best one, śrēṣṭhasarvaguṇānvitā who has all best qualities, rōhiṇī Rohini kiṅ nu you may be

kā tvaṅ bhavasi kalyāṇi tvamaninditalōcanē.

kōpādvā yadi vā mōhādbhartāramasitēkṣaṇē৷৷5.33.8৷৷

vasiṣṭhaṅ kōpayitvā tvaṅ nāsi kalyāṇyarundhatī.


asitēkṣaṇē O lady of lovely black eyes, tvam you, kōpādvā or out of anger, yadi vā or else, mōhāt out of delusion, bhartāram husband, vasiṣṭham Vasistha, kōpayitvā making him angry, kalyāṇi O auspicious lady, arundhatī Arundhati, nāsi are you not

"O lady of lovely black eyes! who are you? Have you by any chance offended your husband out of anger or out of delusion? Are you the auspicious Arundhati dislodged for making your lord Vasistha angry?
kō nu putraḥ pitā bhrātā bhartā vā tē sumadhyamē৷৷5.33.9৷৷

asmāllōkādamuṅ lōkaṅ gataṅ tvamanuśōcasi.


sumadhyamē O woman of beautiful waist, asmāt from this, lōkāt from the world, amuṅ lōkam to this world, gatam dead, tvam your, anuśōcasi worrying about, tē your, putraḥ son, pitā father, bhrātā brother, bhartā vā or is it husband, kō nu is he?

"O woman of beautiful waist! from which world have you come here? For whom are you worrying? Who is your son, father, brother or husband? Are you worrying about some one dead?.
rōdanādatiniśśvāsādbhūmisaṅsparśanādapi৷৷5.33.10৷৷

na tvāṅ dēvīmahaṅ manyē rājña ssarvajñāvadhāraṇāt.


rōdanāt from your weeping, atiniśśvāsāt breathing heavily, bhūmisaṅsparśanādapi your touching the ground, rājñaḥ royal, saṅjñāvadhāraṇāt having signs of sovereignty, tvām you, dēvīm O goddess, aham I, na manyē I do not think.

"From your weeping, your sighing and your touching the earth (gods do not touch the earth) and your signs of sovereignty, I do not think you are a goddess (meaning otherwise she posessed divine grace).
vyañjanāni ca tē yāni lakṣaṇāni ca lakṣayē৷৷5.33.11৷৷

mahiṣī bhūmipālasya rājakanyā ca mē matā.


tē your, yāni those, vyañjanāni signs, lakṣaṇāni ca also qualities, lakṣayē I see, bhūmipālasya king's, mahiṣī consort, rājakanyā ca and a princess, mē to me, matā it is felt.

"On the basis of your royal signs and other qualities I infer that you are the daughter of a king or his consort.
rāvaṇēna janasthānādbalādapadahṛtā yadi৷৷5.33.12৷৷

sītā tvamasi bhadraṅ tē tanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ.


tvam you, janasthānāt from Janasthana, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, balāt forcibly, apahṛtā borne away, sītā Sita, asi yadi if you are, tat that, pṛcchataḥ enquiring, mama to me, ācakṣva you tell, tē bhadram wish you well.

"If you are Sita, who was forcefully borne away by Ravana from Janasthana you may kindly reveal to me freely. May god bless you.
yathā hi tava vai dainyaṅ rūpaṅ cāpyatimānuṣam৷৷5.33.13৷৷

tapasā cānvitō vēṣastvaṅ rāmamahiṣī dhruvam.


tava your, dainyam plight, atimānuṣam superhuman, rūpaṅ ca and your form, tapasā with austerity, anvitaḥ endowed, vēṣaḥ your dress, yathā as much, tvam you are, dhruvam surely, rāmamahiṣī Rama's queen.

"Indeed your plight, the superhuman beauty and your robes marked with asceticism, surely tell me that you are Rama's queen."
sā tasya vacanaṅ śrutvā rāmakīrtanaharṣitā৷৷5.33.14৷৷

uvāca vākyaṅ vaidēhī hanumantaṅ drumāśritam.


sā vaidēhī that Vaidehi, tasya his, vacanam word, śrutvā having heard, rāmakīrtanaharṣitā happy to hear words of praise of Rama, drumāśritam on the tree, hanumantam Hanuman, vākyam these words, uvāca spoke.

Happy to have heard words of praise of Rama, Vaidehi spoke this to Hanuman, who got up the tree:
pṛthivyāṅ rājasiṅhānāṅ mukhyasya viditātmanaḥ৷৷5.33.15৷৷

snuṣā daśarathasyāhaṅ śatrusainyapratāpinaḥ.


aham I am, pṛthivyām on earth, rājasiṅhānām among great kings, mukhyasya foremost, viditātmanaḥ of the knower of self, śatrusainyapratāpinaḥ of the slayer of enemy army, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, snuṣā daughter-in-law.

"I am daughter-in-law of king Dasaratha, knower of the self, the foremost among kings on earth and a slayer of enemy army.
duhitā janakasyāhaṅ vaidēhasya mahātmanaḥ৷৷5.33.16৷৷

sītēti nāma nāmnā.haṅ bhāryā rāmasya dhīmataḥ.


aham I am, vaidēhasya Videha's, mahātmanaḥ great soul, janakasya Janaka's, duhitā daughter, nāmnā sītēti nāma Sita by name, aham I am, dhīmataḥ of the sagacious, rāmasya Rama's, bhāryā wife.

"I am daughter of the great soul, Janaka, king of Videha, known as Sita. I am the wife of that sagacious Rama.
samā dvādaśa tatrāhaṅ rāghavasya nivēśanē৷৷5.33.17৷৷

bhuñjānā mānuṣānbhōgānsarvakāmasamṛddhinī.


aham I am, tatra there, rāghavasya Rama's, nivēśanē the abode, mānuṣān mortal, bhōgān pleasures, bhuñjānā experiencing, sarvakāmasamṛddhinī all kinds of pleasures provided, dvādaśa twelve, samāḥ years.

"I enjoyed worldly pleasures in abundance for twelve years at Rama's abode.
tatra trayōdaśē varṣē rājyēnēkṣvākunandanam৷৷5.33.18৷৷

abhiṣēcayituṅ rājā sōpādhyāyaḥ pracakramē.


tataḥ then, trayōdaśē in the thirteenth, varṣē in the year, sōpādhyāyaḥ with his preceptor, rājā the king, ikṣvākunandanam delight of the Ikshvakus, rājyēna in the kingdom, abhiṣēcayitum to coronate, pracakramē arranged.

"Then in the thirteenth year king Dasaratha along with the royal preceptor arranged to coronate Rama, delight of the Ikshvaku family, in the kingdom.
tasminsambhriyamāṇē tu rāghavasyābhiṣēcanē৷৷5.33.19৷৷

kaikayī nāma bhartāraṅ dēvī vacanamabravīt.


tasmin in that, rāghavasya Rama's, abhiṣēcanē in the coronation, sambhriyamāṇē while preparations were being made, kaikēyī nāma called Kaikeyi, dēvī queen, bhartāram to her husband, vacanam these words, abravīt spoke.

"While preparations for the coronation were on, queen Kaikeyi said to her husband:
na pibēyaṅ na khādēyaṅ pratyahaṅ mama bhōjanam৷৷5.33.20৷৷

ēṣa mē jīvitasyāntō rāmō yadyabhiṣicyatē.


na pibēyam I shall not drink, pratyaham daily, bhōjanam food, na khādēyam I will not eat, rāmaḥ Rama, yadi if, abhiṣicyatē is coronated, ēṣaḥ this is, mē my, jīvitasya life's, antaḥ end.

'I shall not drink or eat food, if Rama is coronated. I shall end my life this moment.
yattaduktaṅ tvayā vākyaṅ prītyā nṛpatisattama৷৷5.33.21৷৷

tacchēnna vitathaṅ kāryaṅ vanaṅ gacchatu rāghavaḥ.


nṛpatisattama the foremost among kings, tvayā by you, prītyā lovingly, yat such, tat vākyam words, uktam spoken, tat the same, vitatham false, na kāryaṅ that promise, yadi if you please, rāghavaḥ Rama, vanam to the forest, gacchatu go.

'O Dasaratha, the foremost among kings! if the promise lovingly made by you earlier is not going to be false, Rama should go to the forest'.
sa rājā satyavāgdēvyā varadānamanusmaran৷৷5.33.22৷৷

mumōha vacanaṅ śrutvā kaikēyyāḥ krūramapriyam.


satyavāk ever truthful, saḥ rājā that king, dēvyāḥ to the queen, varadānam boons, anusmaran remembering, kaikēyyāḥ of Kaikeyi, krūram cruel, apriyam unpleasant, vacanam word, śrutvā having heard, mumōha fainted.

"Remembering the boons the ever truthful king had granted to Kaikeyi, he fainted after hearing her cruel and harsh words.
tatastu sthavirō rājā satyē dharmē vyavasthitaḥ৷৷5.33.23৷৷

jyēṣṭhaṅ yaśasvinaṅ putraṅ rudanrājyamayācata.


tataḥ then, satyē by truth, dharmē by rigteousness, vyavasthitaḥ one who held, sthaviraḥ aged, rājā king, rudan while crying, yaśasvinam glorious one, jyēṣṭham eldest, putram son, rājyam kingdom, ayācata begged.

"The aged king who held on to truthfulness and righteousness begged his famed eldest son Rama to return the kingdom.
sa piturvacanaṅ śrīmānabhiṣēkātparaṅ priyam৷৷5.33.24৷৷

manasā pūrvamāsādya vācā pratigṛhītavān.


śrīmān illustrious one, saḥ he, pituḥ father's, vacanam word, abhiṣēkāt more than coronation, param supreme, priyam dear, manasā by his mind, pūrvam first, āsādya having accepted, vācā by word, pratigṛhītavān accepted

"The illustrious Rama who valued his father's word more than sovereignty, bowed to the command of the father.
dadyānna pratigṛhṇīyānna brūyātkiñcidapriyam৷৷5.33.25৷৷

api jīvitahētōrvā rāmassatyaparākramaḥ.


satyaparākramaḥ one whose truthfulness was his strength, rāmaḥ Rama, dadyāt he give,na pratigṛhṇīyāt he will not take, jīvitahētōrvā even for his life, kiñcit even a little, apriyam harsh, na brūyāt he will not speak .

"Rama, whose strength was his truthfulness, gave whatever others sought but would not accept anything in return. He would not speak a harsh word.
sa vihāyōttarīyāṇi mahārhāṇi mahāyaśāḥ৷৷5.33.26৷৷

visṛjya manasā rājyaṅ jananyai māṅ samādiśat.


mahāyaśāḥ a highly renowned, saḥ he, mahārhāṇi luxurious, uttarīyāṇi upper garments, vihāya cast off, manasā whole heartedly, rājyam kingdom, visṛjya having given up, mām me, jananyai to his mother, samādiśat entrusted.

"Having given up the kingdom voluntarily, Rama, a highly renowned king cast off his luxurious upper garments and asked me to take care of his mother.
sāhaṅ tasyāgratastūrṇaṅ prasthitā vanacāriṇī৷৷5.33.27৷৷

na hi mē tēna hīnāyā vāsassvargē.pi rōcatē.


sā aham I myself, vanacāriṇī a forest-dweller, tūrṇam quickly, tasya his, agrataḥ ahead of him, prasthitā started, tēna by him, hīnāyāḥ separated, mē me, svargē.pi na rōcatē did not prefer even heaven.

"I, however resolved to live in the forest, marched ahead of him quickly as I did not prefer even heaven without him.
prāgēva tu mahābhāgassaumitrirmitranandanaḥ৷৷5.33.28৷৷

pūrvajasyānuyātrārthē drumacīrairalaṅkṛtaḥ.


mahābhāgaḥ a noble one, mitranandanaḥ a delight to friends, saumitriḥ Saumitri, prāgēva already, pūrvajasya eldest brother's, anuyātrārthē to follow him, drumacīraiḥ an bark, alaṅkṛtaḥ dressed.

tē vayaṅ bharturādēśaṅ bahumānya dṛḍhavratāḥ৷৷5.33.29৷৷

praviṣṭāssma purādṛṣṭaṅ vanaṅ gambhīradarśanam.


tē then vayam we, bhartuḥ king's, ādēśam order, bahumānya respecting, dṛḍhavratāḥ resolved firmly, purā in the past, adṛṣṭam not seen, gambhīradarśanam impenetrable, vanam forest, praviṣṭāḥ smaḥ we
entered.

"Respecting the king's order and determined firmly, we entered the impenetrable forest.
vasatō daṇḍakāraṇyē tasyāhamamitaujasaḥ৷৷5.33.30৷৷

rakṣasā.pahṛtā bhāryā rāvaṇēna durātmanā.


daṇḍakāraṇyē in the Dandaka forest, vasataḥ while living, amitaujasaḥ the most valiant, tasya his, bhāryā wife, aham am, durātmanā by evil-minded, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, apahṛtā was abducted.

"While the most valiant Rama was living in the Dandaka forest, I, his wife was borne away by the evil-minded Ravana.
dvau māsau tēna mē kālō jīvitānugrahaḥ kṛtaḥ৷৷5.33.31৷৷

ūrdhvaṅ dvābhyāṅ tu māsābhyāṅ tatastakṣyāmi jīvitam.


tēna by him, dvau two, māsau months, mē to me, jīvitānugrahaḥ grant of time to live, kṛtaḥ given, tataḥ then, dvābhyām after the two, māsābhyām months, ūrdhvam after that, jīvitam life, tyakṣyāmi I will give up.

"He has allowed me two months time to live. After two months I will have to give up my life."
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē trayastriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtythird sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
