[Sita reveals her story to Hanuman.]

సోవతీర్య ద్రుమాత్తస్మాద్విద్రుమప్రతిమాననః.

వినీతవేషః కృపణః ప్రణిపత్యోపసృత్య చ৷৷5.33.1৷৷

తామబ్రవీన్మహాతేజా హనూమాన్మారుతాత్మజః.

శిరస్యఞ్జలిమాధాయ సీతాం మధురయా గిరా৷৷5.33.2৷৷


విద్రుమప్రతిమానన: whose face was like the colour of a coral, మహాతేజాః shining, మారుతాత్మజః son of the Wind-god, సః హనుమాన్ Hanuman, తస్మాత్ from that, ద్రుమాత్ from the tree, అవతీర్య having climbed down, వినీతవేషః dressed in a sober manner, కృపణః piteous, ప్రణిపత్య having offered salutations, ఉపసృత్య went near her, శిరసి on his head, అఞ్చలిమ్ having folded palms, ఆధాయ placed, తాం సీతామ్ her, Sita, మధురయా in sweet, గిరా words, అబ్రవీత్ spoke.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god whose face shone like coral, dressed in a sober manner climbed down the tree, went close to Sita, offered salutations with his palms on his head and spoke in sweet words:
కా ను పద్మపలాశాక్షి క్లిష్టకౌశేయవాసిని.

ద్రుమస్య శాఖామాలమ్బ్య తిష్ఠసి త్వమనిన్దితే৷৷5.33.3৷৷


పద్మపలాశాక్షి O one with eyes like lotus petals, క్లిష్టకౌశేయవాసిని robed in crumpled silk, అనిన్దితే blameless lady, ద్రుమస్య of the tree, శాఖామ్ branch, ఆలమ్బ్య by holding, తిష్ఠసి you are standing, కా ను who are you?

"O blameless lady with eyes like lotus petals, in crumpled silk, holding a branch, and standing, who are you?
కిమర్థమ్ తవ నేత్రాభ్యాం వారి స్రవతి శోకజమ్.

పుణ్డరీకపలాశాభ్యాం విప్రకీర్ణమివోదకమ్৷৷5.33.4৷৷


పుణ్డరీకపలాశాభ్యామ్ from two petals of white lotus, విప్రకీర్ణమ్ trickled, ఉదకమ్ ఇవ like water, తవ your, నేత్రాభ్యామ్ from your eyes, శోకజమ్ tears of grief, వారి water, కిమర్థమ్ for what reason, స్రవతి is flowing.

"Why are tears of grief flowing from your eyes like water trickling down a pair of petals of white lotuses?
సురాణామసురాణాం వా నాగగన్ధర్వరక్షసామ్.

యక్షాణాం కిన్నరాణాం వా కా త్వం భవసి శోభనే৷৷5.33.5৷৷


శోభనే O auspicious one!, త్వమ్ you, సురాణామ్ among gods, అసురాణాం వా or demons, నాగగన్ధర్వరక్షసామ్ of nagas, gandharvas, rakshasas, యక్షాణామ్ of yakshas, కిన్నరాణాం వా or kinneras, కా who, భవసి you are.

"O noble lady, are you a goddess or a demoness, a naga, a gandharva, a rakshasa, a yaksha or a kinnera?
కా త్వం భవసి రుద్రాణాం మరుతాం వా వరాననే.

వసూనాం హి వరారోహే దేవతా ప్రతిభాసి మే৷৷5.33.6৷৷


వరాననే O beautiful lady!, త్వమ్ you, రుద్రాణామ్ of the Rudras, మరుతాం వా or even Marutas, వసూనామ్ of Vasus, కా who, భవసి you are, వరారోహే O fine woman, దేవతా goddess, మే to me, ప్రతిభాసి you appear

"O beautiful lady! Do you belong to the race of Rudras, or Marutas, or Vasus?. O noble lady, you appear a goddess to me.
కి ను చన్ద్రమసా హీనా పతితా విబుధాలయాత్.

రోహిణీ జ్యోతిషాం శ్రేష్ఠా శ్రేష్ఠసర్వగుణాన్వితా৷৷5.33.7৷৷


చన్ద్రమసా from the Moon, హీనా separated, విబుధాలయాత్ from the abode of the gods, పతితా fallen down, జ్యోతిషామ్ among the luminaries, శ్రేష్ఠా best one, శ్రేష్ఠసర్వగుణాన్వితా who has all best qualities, రోహిణీ Rohini కిం ను you may be

కా త్వం భవసి కల్యాణి త్వమనిన్దితలోచనే.

కోపాద్వా యది వా మోహాద్భర్తారమసితేక్షణే৷৷5.33.8৷৷

వసిష్ఠం కోపయిత్వా త్వం నాసి కల్యాణ్యరున్ధతీ.


అసితేక్షణే O lady of lovely black eyes, త్వమ్ you, కోపాద్వా or out of anger, యది వా or else, మోహాత్ out of delusion, భర్తారమ్ husband, వసిష్ఠమ్ Vasistha, కోపయిత్వా making him angry, కల్యాణి O auspicious lady, అరున్ధతీ Arundhati, నాసి are you not

"O lady of lovely black eyes! who are you? Have you by any chance offended your husband out of anger or out of delusion? Are you the auspicious Arundhati dislodged for making your lord Vasistha angry?
కో ను పుత్రః పితా భ్రాతా భర్తా వా తే సుమధ్యమే৷৷5.33.9৷৷

అస్మాల్లోకాదముం లోకం గతం త్వమనుశోచసి.


సుమధ్యమే O woman of beautiful waist, అస్మాత్ from this, లోకాత్ from the world, అముం లోకమ్ to this world, గతమ్ dead, త్వమ్ your, అనుశోచసి worrying about, తే your, పుత్రః son, పితా father, భ్రాతా brother, భర్తా వా or is it husband, కో ను is he?

"O woman of beautiful waist! from which world have you come here? For whom are you worrying? Who is your son, father, brother or husband? Are you worrying about some one dead?.
రోదనాదతినిశ్శ్వాసాద్భూమిసంస్పర్శనాదపి৷৷5.33.10৷৷

న త్వాం దేవీమహం మన్యే రాజ్ఞ స్సర్వజ్ఞావధారణాత్.


రోదనాత్ from your weeping, అతినిశ్శ్వాసాత్ breathing heavily, భూమిసంస్పర్శనాదపి your touching the ground, రాజ్ఞః royal, సంజ్ఞావధారణాత్ having signs of sovereignty, త్వామ్ you, దేవీమ్ O goddess, అహమ్ I, న మన్యే I do not think.

"From your weeping, your sighing and your touching the earth (gods do not touch the earth) and your signs of sovereignty, I do not think you are a goddess (meaning otherwise she posessed divine grace).
వ్యఞ్జనాని చ తే యాని లక్షణాని చ లక్షయే৷৷5.33.11৷৷

మహిషీ భూమిపాలస్య రాజకన్యా చ మే మతా.


తే your, యాని those, వ్యఞ్జనాని signs, లక్షణాని చ also qualities, లక్షయే I see, భూమిపాలస్య king's, మహిషీ consort, రాజకన్యా చ and a princess, మే to me, మతా it is felt.

"On the basis of your royal signs and other qualities I infer that you are the daughter of a king or his consort.
రావణేన జనస్థానాద్బలాదపదహృతా యది৷৷5.33.12৷৷

సీతా త్వమసి భద్రం తే తన్మమాచక్ష్వ పృచ్ఛతః.


త్వమ్ you, జనస్థానాత్ from Janasthana, రావణేన by Ravana, బలాత్ forcibly, అపహృతా borne away, సీతా Sita, అసి యది if you are, తత్ that, పృచ్ఛతః enquiring, మమ to me, ఆచక్ష్వ you tell, తే భద్రమ్ wish you well.

"If you are Sita, who was forcefully borne away by Ravana from Janasthana you may kindly reveal to me freely. May god bless you.
యథా హి తవ వై దైన్యం రూపం చాప్యతిమానుషమ్৷৷5.33.13৷৷

తపసా చాన్వితో వేషస్త్వం రామమహిషీ ధ్రువమ్.


తవ your, దైన్యమ్ plight, అతిమానుషమ్ superhuman, రూపం చ and your form, తపసా with austerity, అన్వితః endowed, వేషః your dress, యథా as much, త్వమ్ you are, ధ్రువమ్ surely, రామమహిషీ Rama's queen.

"Indeed your plight, the superhuman beauty and your robes marked with asceticism, surely tell me that you are Rama's queen."
సా తస్య వచనం శ్రుత్వా రామకీర్తనహర్షితా৷৷5.33.14৷৷

ఉవాచ వాక్యం వైదేహీ హనుమన్తం ద్రుమాశ్రితమ్.


సా వైదేహీ that Vaidehi, తస్య his, వచనమ్ word, శ్రుత్వా having heard, రామకీర్తనహర్షితా happy to hear words of praise of Rama, ద్రుమాశ్రితమ్ on the tree, హనుమన్తమ్ Hanuman, వాక్యమ్ these words, ఉవాచ spoke.

Happy to have heard words of praise of Rama, Vaidehi spoke this to Hanuman, who got up the tree:
పృథివ్యాం రాజసింహానాం ముఖ్యస్య విదితాత్మనః৷৷5.33.15৷৷

స్నుషా దశరథస్యాహం శత్రుసైన్యప్రతాపినః.


అహమ్ I am, పృథివ్యామ్ on earth, రాజసింహానామ్ among great kings, ముఖ్యస్య foremost, విదితాత్మనః of the knower of self, శత్రుసైన్యప్రతాపినః of the slayer of enemy army, దశరథస్య Dasaratha's, స్నుషా daughter-in-law.

"I am daughter-in-law of king Dasaratha, knower of the self, the foremost among kings on earth and a slayer of enemy army.
దుహితా జనకస్యాహం వైదేహస్య మహాత్మనః৷৷5.33.16৷৷

సీతేతి నామ నామ్నాహం భార్యా రామస్య ధీమతః.


అహమ్ I am, వైదేహస్య Videha's, మహాత్మనః great soul, జనకస్య Janaka's, దుహితా daughter, నామ్నా సీతేతి నామ Sita by name, అహమ్ I am, ధీమతః of the sagacious, రామస్య Rama's, భార్యా wife.

"I am daughter of the great soul, Janaka, king of Videha, known as Sita. I am the wife of that sagacious Rama.
సమా ద్వాదశ తత్రాహం రాఘవస్య నివేశనే৷৷5.33.17৷৷

భుఞ్జానా మానుషాన్భోగాన్సర్వకామసమృద్ధినీ.


అహమ్ I am, తత్ర there, రాఘవస్య Rama's, నివేశనే the abode, మానుషాన్ mortal, భోగాన్ pleasures, భుఞ్జానా experiencing, సర్వకామసమృద్ధినీ all kinds of pleasures provided, ద్వాదశ twelve, సమాః years.

"I enjoyed worldly pleasures in abundance for twelve years at Rama's abode.
తత్ర త్రయోదశే వర్షే రాజ్యేనేక్ష్వాకునన్దనమ్৷৷5.33.18৷৷

అభిషేచయితుం రాజా సోపాధ్యాయః ప్రచక్రమే.


తతః then, త్రయోదశే in the thirteenth, వర్షే in the year, సోపాధ్యాయః with his preceptor, రాజా the king, ఇక్ష్వాకునన్దనమ్ delight of the Ikshvakus, రాజ్యేన in the kingdom, అభిషేచయితుమ్ to coronate, ప్రచక్రమే arranged.

"Then in the thirteenth year king Dasaratha along with the royal preceptor arranged to coronate Rama, delight of the Ikshvaku family, in the kingdom.
తస్మిన్సమ్భ్రియమాణే తు రాఘవస్యాభిషేచనే৷৷5.33.19৷৷

కైకయీ నామ భర్తారం దేవీ వచనమబ్రవీత్.


తస్మిన్ in that, రాఘవస్య Rama's, అభిషేచనే in the coronation, సమ్భ్రియమాణే while preparations were being made, కైకేయీ నామ called Kaikeyi, దేవీ queen, భర్తారమ్ to her husband, వచనమ్ these words, అబ్రవీత్ spoke.

"While preparations for the coronation were on, queen Kaikeyi said to her husband:
న పిబేయం న ఖాదేయం ప్రత్యహం మమ భోజనమ్৷৷5.33.20৷৷

ఏష మే జీవితస్యాన్తో రామో యద్యభిషిచ్యతే.


న పిబేయమ్ I shall not drink, ప్రత్యహమ్ daily, భోజనమ్ food, న ఖాదేయమ్ I will not eat, రామః Rama, యది if, అభిషిచ్యతే is coronated, ఏషః this is, మే my, జీవితస్య life's, అన్తః end.

'I shall not drink or eat food, if Rama is coronated. I shall end my life this moment.
యత్తదుక్తం త్వయా వాక్యం ప్రీత్యా నృపతిసత్తమ৷৷5.33.21৷৷

తచ్ఛేన్న వితథం కార్యం వనం గచ్ఛతు రాఘవః.


నృపతిసత్తమ the foremost among kings, త్వయా by you, ప్రీత్యా lovingly, యత్ such, తత్ వాక్యమ్ words, ఉక్తమ్ spoken, తత్ the same, వితథమ్ false, న కార్యం that promise, యది if you please, రాఘవః Rama, వనమ్ to the forest, గచ్ఛతు go.

'O Dasaratha, the foremost among kings! if the promise lovingly made by you earlier is not going to be false, Rama should go to the forest'.
స రాజా సత్యవాగ్దేవ్యా వరదానమనుస్మరన్৷৷5.33.22৷৷

ముమోహ వచనం శ్రుత్వా కైకేయ్యాః క్రూరమప్రియమ్.


సత్యవాక్ ever truthful, సః రాజా that king, దేవ్యాః to the queen, వరదానమ్ boons, అనుస్మరన్ remembering, కైకేయ్యాః of Kaikeyi, క్రూరమ్ cruel, అప్రియమ్ unpleasant, వచనమ్ word, శ్రుత్వా having heard, ముమోహ fainted.

"Remembering the boons the ever truthful king had granted to Kaikeyi, he fainted after hearing her cruel and harsh words.
తతస్తు స్థవిరో రాజా సత్యే ధర్మే వ్యవస్థితః৷৷5.33.23৷৷

జ్యేష్ఠం యశస్వినం పుత్రం రుదన్రాజ్యమయాచత.


తతః then, సత్యే by truth, ధర్మే by rigteousness, వ్యవస్థితః one who held, స్థవిరః aged, రాజా king, రుదన్ while crying, యశస్వినమ్ glorious one, జ్యేష్ఠమ్ eldest, పుత్రమ్ son, రాజ్యమ్ kingdom, అయాచత begged.

"The aged king who held on to truthfulness and righteousness begged his famed eldest son Rama to return the kingdom.
స పితుర్వచనం శ్రీమానభిషేకాత్పరం ప్రియమ్৷৷5.33.24৷৷

మనసా పూర్వమాసాద్య వాచా ప్రతిగృహీతవాన్.


శ్రీమాన్ illustrious one, సః he, పితుః father's, వచనమ్ word, అభిషేకాత్ more than coronation, పరమ్ supreme, ప్రియమ్ dear, మనసా by his mind, పూర్వమ్ first, ఆసాద్య having accepted, వాచా by word, ప్రతిగృహీతవాన్ accepted

"The illustrious Rama who valued his father's word more than sovereignty, bowed to the command of the father.
దద్యాన్న ప్రతిగృహ్ణీయాన్న బ్రూయాత్కిఞ్చిదప్రియమ్৷৷5.33.25৷৷

అపి జీవితహేతోర్వా రామస్సత్యపరాక్రమః.


సత్యపరాక్రమః one whose truthfulness was his strength, రామః Rama, దద్యాత్ he give,న ప్రతిగృహ్ణీయాత్ he will not take, జీవితహేతోర్వా even for his life, కిఞ్చిత్ even a little, అప్రియమ్ harsh, న బ్రూయాత్ he will not speak .

"Rama, whose strength was his truthfulness, gave whatever others sought but would not accept anything in return. He would not speak a harsh word.
స విహాయోత్తరీయాణి మహార్హాణి మహాయశాః৷৷5.33.26৷৷

విసృజ్య మనసా రాజ్యం జనన్యై మాం సమాదిశత్.


మహాయశాః a highly renowned, సః he, మహార్హాణి luxurious, ఉత్తరీయాణి upper garments, విహాయ cast off, మనసా whole heartedly, రాజ్యమ్ kingdom, విసృజ్య having given up, మామ్ me, జనన్యై to his mother, సమాదిశత్ entrusted.

"Having given up the kingdom voluntarily, Rama, a highly renowned king cast off his luxurious upper garments and asked me to take care of his mother.
సాహం తస్యాగ్రతస్తూర్ణం ప్రస్థితా వనచారిణీ৷৷5.33.27৷৷

న హి మే తేన హీనాయా వాసస్స్వర్గేపి రోచతే.


సా అహమ్ I myself, వనచారిణీ a forest-dweller, తూర్ణమ్ quickly, తస్య his, అగ్రతః ahead of him, ప్రస్థితా started, తేన by him, హీనాయాః separated, మే me, స్వర్గేపి న రోచతే did not prefer even heaven.

"I, however resolved to live in the forest, marched ahead of him quickly as I did not prefer even heaven without him.
ప్రాగేవ తు మహాభాగస్సౌమిత్రిర్మిత్రనన్దనః৷৷5.33.28৷৷

పూర్వజస్యానుయాత్రార్థే ద్రుమచీరైరలఙ్కృతః.


మహాభాగః a noble one, మిత్రనన్దనః a delight to friends, సౌమిత్రిః Saumitri, ప్రాగేవ already, పూర్వజస్య eldest brother's, అనుయాత్రార్థే to follow him, ద్రుమచీరైః an bark, అలఙ్కృతః dressed.

తే వయం భర్తురాదేశం బహుమాన్య దృఢవ్రతాః৷৷5.33.29৷৷

ప్రవిష్టాస్స్మ పురాదృష్టం వనం గమ్భీరదర్శనమ్.


తే then వయమ్ we, భర్తుః king's, ఆదేశమ్ order, బహుమాన్య respecting, దృఢవ్రతాః resolved firmly, పురా in the past, అదృష్టమ్ not seen, గమ్భీరదర్శనమ్ impenetrable, వనమ్ forest, ప్రవిష్టాః స్మః we
entered.

"Respecting the king's order and determined firmly, we entered the impenetrable forest.
వసతో దణ్డకారణ్యే తస్యాహమమితౌజసః৷৷5.33.30৷৷

రక్షసాపహృతా భార్యా రావణేన దురాత్మనా.


దణ్డకారణ్యే in the Dandaka forest, వసతః while living, అమితౌజసః the most valiant, తస్య his, భార్యా wife, అహమ్ am, దురాత్మనా by evil-minded, రావణేన by Ravana, అపహృతా was abducted.

"While the most valiant Rama was living in the Dandaka forest, I, his wife was borne away by the evil-minded Ravana.
ద్వౌ మాసౌ తేన మే కాలో జీవితానుగ్రహః కృతః৷৷5.33.31৷৷

ఊర్ధ్వం ద్వాభ్యాం తు మాసాభ్యాం తతస్తక్ష్యామి జీవితమ్.


తేన by him, ద్వౌ two, మాసౌ months, మే to me, జీవితానుగ్రహః grant of time to live, కృతః given, తతః then, ద్వాభ్యామ్ after the two, మాసాభ్యామ్ months, ఊర్ధ్వమ్ after that, జీవితమ్ life, త్యక్ష్యామి I will give up.

"He has allowed me two months time to live. After two months I will have to give up my life."
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే త్రయస్త్రింశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the thirtythird sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
