[Hanuman tells the story of Rama to Sita.]

tasyāstadvacanaṅ śrutvā hanumānharipuṅgavaḥ.

duḥkhādduḥkhābhibhūtāyā ssāntvamuttaramabravīt৷৷5.34.1৷৷


haripuṅgavaḥ monkey leader, hanumān Hanuman, duḥkhāt with sadness, duḥkhābhibhūtāyāḥ overwhelmed with grief, tasyāḥ to her, tat those, vacanam words, śrutvā after hearing, sāntvam comforting, uttaram reply, abravīt spoke.

Hearing the words of Sita who was overwhelmed with grief, the monkey leader Hanuman felt sad and thus spoke comforting her:
ahaṅ rāmasya sandēśāddēvi dūtastavāgataḥ.

vaidēhi kuśalī rāmastvāṅ ca kauśalamabravīt৷৷5.34.2৷৷


dēvi O queen, vaidēhi Vaidehi, aham I am, rāmasya Rama's, sandēśāt by order, tava your, dūtaḥ messenger, āgataḥ reached, kuśalī is well, rāmaḥ Rama, tvāṅ ca and you, kuśalam welfare, abravīt wished you.

"By the command of Rama I am here as a messenger. He is keeping well. He is well and wishes you well.
yō brahmamastraṅ vēdāṅśca vēda vēdavidāṅvaraḥ.

sa tvāṅ dāśarathī rāmō dēvi kauśalamabravīt৷৷5.34.3৷৷


dēvi O god-like lady, vēdavidām mastered the Vedas, varaḥ choicest, yaḥ he is, brahmam astram weapon of Brahma (Brahmastra), vēdāṅśca and Vedas, vēda knows, saḥ he, dāśarathiḥ son of Dasaratha, rāmaḥ Rama, tvām you, kauśalam welfare, abravīt conveyed.

"O god-like lady! Rama, son of Dasaratha, master of the Vedas, wielder of Brahmastra wishes you well.
lakṣmaṇaśca mahātējā bhartustē.nucaraḥ priyaḥ.

kṛtavānśōkasantaptaśśirasā tē.bhivādanam৷৷5.34.4৷৷


mahātējāḥ very mighty, tē bhartuḥ your husband, priyaḥ dear, anucaraḥ follower, lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana also, śōkasantaptaḥ immersed in grief, śirasā with his head in obeisance, tē to you, abhivādanam offers salutations, kṛtavān has done.

"The mighty Lakshmana too, a dear brother and follower of your husband is immersed in grief, and sends salutations to you."
sā tayōḥ kuśalaṅ dēvī niśamya narasiṅhayōḥ.

prītisaṅhṛṣṭasarvāṅgī hanumantamathābravīt৷৷5.34.5৷৷


sā dēvī that queen, tayōḥ of both of them, narasiṅhayōḥ of lions among men, kuśalam well-being, niśamya on hearing, prītisaṅhṛṣṭasarvāṅgī overtaken by joy experienced in all her limbs, atha then, hanumantam Hanuman, abravīt spoke.

On hearing the well-being of Rama and Lakshman, lions among men, Sita experienced thrill all over her body. She then spoke to Hanuman:
kalyāṇī bata gāthēyaṅ laukikī pratibhāti mā.

ēti jīvantamānandō naraṅ varṣaśatādapi৷৷5.34.6৷৷


jīvantam who lives, naram human being, varṣaśatādapi a hundred years, ānandaḥ happiness, ēti comes, iyam this, laukikī popular, gāthā adage, kalyāṇī is auspicious, mā to me, pratibhāti appears.

"The adage that 'joy comes to a living being even though it be at the end of a hundred years' is popular. It appears true in my case".
tayā samāgatē tasminprītirutpāditā.dbhutā.

parasparēṇa cālāpaṅ viśvastau tau pracakratuḥ৷৷5.34.7৷৷


samāgatē when the meeting took place, tasmin in him, tathā like that, adbhutā wonderful, prītiḥ pleasure, utpāditā was created, tau in both, viśvastau confiding in the other, parasparēṇa each to the other, ālāpaṅ ca converse, cakratuḥ started.

Hanuman thus created a sense of wonderful joy in her as they came together. Both of them started to converse restoring confidence in each other.
tasyāstadvacanaṅ śrutvā hanumānhariyūthapaḥ.

sītāyāśśōkadīnāyāssamīpamupacakramē৷৷5.34.8৷৷


hariyūthapaḥ leader of the monkey troops, hanumān Hanuman, śōkadīnāyāḥ of the piteous lady stricken with grief, tasyāḥ her, sītāyāḥ Sita's, tat that, vacanam word, śrutvā after hearing, samīpam close by, upacakramē moved.

Hearing the reply of Sita, who was crying piteously, stricken with grief, the monkey leader, Hanuman moved close to her.
yathā yathā samīpaṅ sa hanumānupasarpati.

tathā tathā rāvaṇaṅ sā taṅ sītā pariśaṅkatē৷৷5.34.9৷৷


saḥ hanumān Hanuman, yathā yathā slowly that way, samīpam near, upasarpati started moving, tathā tathā in the same way, sā sītā that Sita, tam him, rāvaṇam Ravana, pariśaṅkatē suspected.

As Hanuman started slowly drawing close, Sita suspected he might be Ravana.
ahō dhigduṣkṛtamidaṅ kathitaṅ hi yadasya mē.

rūpāntaramupāgamya sa ēvāyaṅ hi rāvaṇaḥ৷৷5.34.10৷৷


ahō Oh!, dhik fie upon, mē to myself, idam this, asya to him, kathitam story, duṣkṛtam that which should not have been said, ayam he, rūpāntaram in cognito, upāgamya has come, saḥ rāvaṇaḥ hi verily he is Ravana.

"Oh!shame on me. I have told him my story which should not have been said. This is verily Ravana come in a disguise".
tāmaśōkasya śākhāṅ sā vimuktvā śōkakarśitā.

tasyāmēvānavadyāṅgī dharaṇyāṅ samupāviśat৷৷5.34.11৷৷


anavadyāṅgī who has flawless limbs, sā she, aśōkasya Ashoka tree's, tām that, śākhām branch, vimuktvā later leaving, śōkakarśitā emaciated out of sorrow, tasyām on that, dharaṇyāmēva on the ground, samupāviśat sat near.

So saying Sita of flawless limbs, emaciated with grief, left the branch of Ashoka tree held by her and squatted on the ground.
hanumānapi duḥkhārtāṅ tāṅ dṛṣṭvā bhayamōhitām.

avandata mahābāhustatastāṅ janakātmajām৷৷5.34.12৷৷

sā cainaṅ bhayavitrastā bhūyō naivābhyudaikṣata.


mahābāhuḥ long-armed one, hanumānapi Hanuman too, duḥkhārtām sorrowful lady, bhayamōhitām deluded with fear, tām her, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, tataḥ then, tāṅ janakātmajām the daughter of Janaka, avandata prostrated, sā ca and she, bhayavitrastā trembling with fear, ēnam him, bhūyaḥ again, nābhyudaikṣata did not look at him.

The long-armed Hanuman saw Sita, who was stricken with grief and deluded with fear. He prostrated to her. But out of fear she did not look at him.
taṅ dṛṣṭvā vandamānaṅ tu sītā śaśinibhānanā৷৷5.34.13৷৷

abravīddhīrghamucchavasya vānaraṅ madhurasvarā.


śaśinibhānanā moon-faced lady, sītā Sita, tam him, vandamānam prostrating, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, dīrgham deep, ucchavasya after breathing out, madhurasvarā in a sweet voice, vānaram to vanara, abravīt said.

On seeing the vanara prostrated, the moon-faced lady, sighed deeply and spoke to him in a sweet voice:
māyāṅ praviṣṭō māyāvī yadi tvaṅ rāvaṇassvayam৷৷5.34.14৷৷

utpādayasi mē bhūyassantāpaṅ tanna śōbhanam.


tvam you, māyām disguised, praviṣṭaḥ entered, māyāvī trickster, svayam yourself, rāvaṇaḥ yadi if you are Ravana, mē to me, bhūyaḥ again, santāpam grief, utpādayasi you have created, tat that, śōbhanam na not good.

"If you are that trickster Ravana who appears incognito before me, it is not good for you. You are causing grief again.
svaṅ parityajya rūpaṅ yaḥ parivrājakarūpadhrut.

janasthānē mayā dṛṣṭastvaṅ sa ēvāsi rāvaṇaḥ৷৷5.34.15৷৷


yaḥ rāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, svaṅ rūpam his own form, parityajya after giving up, parivrājakarūpavān taking the form of a mendicant, janasthānē in Janasthana, mayā by me, dṛṣṭaḥ seen, tvaṅ you, sa ēva asi you are the same one.

"You are the same Ravana who took the guise of a mendicant, giving up your real form and came to Janasthana.
upavāsakṛśāṅ dīnāṅ kāmarūpa niśācara.

santāpayasi māṅ bhūyassantaptāṅ tanna śōbhanam৷৷5.34.16৷৷


kāmarūpa one who can assume any form, niśācara night-stalker, upavāsakṛśāṅ an emaciated lady, santaptāṅ a lady stricken with grief, dīnāṅ pitiable, mām me, bhūyaḥ again, santāpaṅ grief, santāpayasi you are making me sorrowful, tat that, śōbhanaṅ na not good for you.

"Oh! you are one who can assume any form at will. You are a night-stalker. It is not good for you to cause pain to me who is already emaciated through fasting, who is pitiable and who is already afflicted.
athavā naitadēvaṅ hi yanmayā pariśaṅkitam৷৷5.34.17৷৷

manasō hi mama prītirutpannā tava darśanāt.


athavā or may be, mayā by me, yat that which, pariśaṅkitam that I am suspecting, ētat because, ēvam all this, na hi not true, tava your, darśanāt by your presence, mama my, manasaḥ mind, prītiḥ pleased, utpannā hi is generated.

"May be my suspicion is not correct! Because I am experiencing pleasure in my mind in your presence.
yadi rāmasya dūtastvamāgatō bhadramastu tē৷৷5.34.18৷৷

pṛcchāmi tvāṅ hariśrēṣṭha priyā rāmakathā hi mē.


tvam you, rāmasya Rama's, dūtaḥ messenger, āgataḥ yadi if you have come here, tē to you, bhadram be auspicious, astu be, hariśrēṣṭha O great vanara, mē to me, rāmakathā Rama'story, priyā hi dear, tvām you, pṛcchāmi I ask you.

"O great vanara, If on the other hand you have come here as Rama's messenger I wish you well. I love Rama's story. Tell me.
guṇānrāmasya kathaya priyasya mama vānara৷৷5.34.19৷৷

cittaṅ harasi mē saumya nadīkūlaṅ yathā rayaḥ.


vānara vanara, mama my, priyasya dear lord's, rāmasya Rama's, guṇān virtues, kathaya you may tell me, saumya O gentle one, nadīkūlam river bank, rayaḥ yathā like the current of water, mē my, cittam mind, harasi you are luring.

"O vanara! Rama's virtues are dear to me to hear. O gentle one! just as the current of the river wears away its banks, my mind is lured by your presence.
ahō svapnasya sukhatā yāhamēvaṅ cirāhṛtā৷৷5.34.20৷৷

prēṣitaṅ nāma paśyāmi rāghavēṇa vanaukasam.


svapnasya of a dream, sukhatā pleasure, ahō Oh!, cirāhṛtā kept dreaming for a long time, yā that, rāghavēṇa by Rama, prēṣitaṅ nāma person sent, vanaukasam vanara, ēvam that way, paśyāmi I am seeing.

"Oh! I have been seeing the person sent by Rama in my dream for a long time. This is a pleasant dream to me.
svapnē.pi yadyahaṅ vīraṅ rāghavaṅ sahalakṣmaṇam৷৷5.34.21৷৷

paśyēyaṅ nāvasīdēyaṅ svapnō.pi mama matsarī.


aham I, svapnē.pi even in a dream, sahalakṣmaṇam along with Lakshmana, vīram heroic, rāghavam Rama, paśyēyaṅ yadi if I can see, nāvasīdēyam I will not be despondent, mama my, svapnō.pi even the dream, matsarī inimical to me.

"Even if I can see the heroic Rama together with Lakshmana in my dream my pain will be gone. Even the dream is inimical to me (I cannot sleep and thus cannot dream.)
nāhaṅ svapnamimaṅ manyē svapnē dṛṣṭvā hi vānaram৷৷5.34.22৷৷

na śakyō.bhyudayaḥ prāptuṅ prāptaścābhyudayō mama.


aham I am, imam this, svapnam dream, na manyē I do not think so, svapnē in a dream, vānaram vanara, dṛṣṭvā having seen, abhyudayaḥ welfare, prāptum to attain, na śakyaḥ not possible, mama to
me, abhyudayaḥ pleasure, prāptaśca is experienced.

"I do not think it is a dream. Pleasure cannot be experienced by seeing a vanara in a dream. I experience pleasure now (seeing a monkey in a dream is a bad omen).
kinnu syācittamōhō.yaṅ bhavēdvātagatistviyam৷৷5.34.23৷৷

unmādajō vikārō vā syādiyaṅ mṛgatṛṣṇikā.


ayam this, cittamōhaḥ delusion in the mind, syāt kiṅ nu why do I feel like this? iyam this kind of, vātagatiḥ mental inbalance, bhavēt may be, unmādajaḥ developed due to madness, vikārō vā or else is it a change?, iyam this, mṛgatṛṣṇikā a mirage, syāt may be.

"Can this be a delusion of my mind or a mental imbalance (resulting in movement of the mind in the body). Is it a malady born of my madness? Or is it a mirage?
athavā nāyamunmādō mōhō.pyunmādalakṣaṇaḥ৷৷5.34.24৷৷

sambudhyē cāhamātmānamiyaṅ cāpi vanaukasam.


athavā if not, ayam this, unmādaḥ insanity, unmādalakṣaṇaḥ sign of insanity, mōhō.pi delusion also, na not, aham I, ātmānam myself, imam this, vanaukasam vanara, sambudhyē recognise.

"No, this cannot be insanity. nor even delusion. But I recognise this vanara well"!
ityēvaṅ bahudhā sītā sampradhārya balābalam৷৷5.34.25৷৷

rakṣasāṅ kāmarūpatvānmēnē taṅ rākṣasādhipam.


sītā Sita, ityēvam in this manner, balābalam strength and weakness, bahudhā in many ways, sampradhārya after considering, rakṣasām of demons, kāmarūpatvāt taking any form at will, tam him, rākṣasādhipam king of demons, mēnē he thought.

Considering the strength and weakness of demons in that manner Sita thought that Hanuman was none other than the king of demons who can asume any form at will.
ētāṅ buddhiṅ tadā kṛtvā sītā sā tanumadhyamā৷৷5.34.26৷৷

na prativyājahārātha vānaraṅ janakātmajā.


tadā then, tanumadhyamā lady with a fair waist, janakātmajā Janaka's daughter, sā sītā that Sita, ētām in this way, buddhim thought, kṛtvā having entertained, atha then, vānaram to vanara, na prativyājahāra did not respond.

Having entertained such thoughts, Sita, the lady with a fairwaist, daughter of Janaka, did not respond to the vanara.
sītāyāścintitaṅ buddhvā hanumānmārutātmajaḥ৷৷5.34.27৷৷

śrōtrānukūlairvacanaistadā tāṅ saṅpraharṣayat.


mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, sītāyāḥ Sita's, cintitam thought, buddhvā understood, tadā then, tām her, śrōtrānukūlaiḥ pleasing to hear, vacanaiḥ by the words, sampraharṣayat pleased.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god understood what was going on in Sita's mind and spoke pleasing words that brought joy in her.
āditya iva tējasvī lōkakāntaśśaśī yathā৷৷5.34.28৷৷

rājā sarvasya lōkasya dēvō vaiśravaṇō yathā.

vikramēṇōpapannaśca yathā viṣṇurmahāyaśāḥ৷৷5.34.29৷৷


āditya iva like the Sun, tējasvī glorious, śaśī yathā like the Moon, lōkakāntaḥ brings delight to the whole world, dēvaḥ god, vaiśravaṇō yathā like Vaisravana, sarvasya of all, lōkasya of the worlds, rājā king, mahāyaśāḥ is renowned, viṣṇuḥ yathā like Visnu, vikramēṇa in valour, upapannaśca endowed .

"Rama is glorious as the Sun, brings delight to the whole world like the Moon, is the
king of kings like Vaisravana, and renowned like Visnu endowed with valour.
satyavādī madhuravāgdēvō vācaspatiryathā.

rūpavānsubhaga śrīmān kandarpa iva mūrtimān৷৷5.34.30৷৷


satyavādī truthful in speech, dēvaḥ god, vācaspatiryathā like Brihaspati, madhuravāk sweet tongued, rūpavān handsome, subhagaḥ graceful, śrīmān prosperous, mūrtimān a personification, kandarpaḥ iva like Kamadeva.

"He is truthful in speech like Brihaspati, prosperous (like Kubera), sweet-tongued, handsome, graceful like Kamadeva.
sthānakrōdhaḥ prahartā ca śrēṣṭhō lōkē mahārathaḥ.

bāhucchāyāmavaṣṭabdhō yasya lōkō mahātmanaḥ৷৷5.34.31৷৷


sthānakrōdhaḥ who shows anger to the proper person, prahartā ca who punishes, lōkē the world, śrēṣṭhaḥ supreme, mahārathaḥ great charioteer, lōkaḥ in the world, yasya whose, mahātmanaḥ of the great self, bāhucchāyāmavaṣṭabdhō under the shadow of whose shoulders refuge is taken.

"He shows anger to one who deserves it, he is the foremost charioteer of the world and he is a great self under the shadow of whose shoulders the whole world takes refuge.
apakṛṣyāśramapadānmṛgarūpēṇa rāghavam.

śūnyē yēnāpanītāsi tasya drakṣyasi yatphalam৷৷5.34.32৷৷


yēna since, rāghavam Rama, mṛgarūpēṇa in the form of a deer, āśramapadāt from the hermitage, apakṛṣya were abducted, śūnyē isolated place, apanītā you are borne away, asi you, tasya its, yatphalam result, drakṣyasi you will see.

"You will see the consequences of the action of Ravana who abducted you deceitfully in the form of deer when Rama was away from the hermitage.
na cirādrāvaṇaṅ saṅkhyē yō vadhiṣyati vīryavān.

rōṣapramuktairiṣubhirjvaladbhiriva pāvakaiḥ৷৷5.34.33৷৷

tēnāhaṅ prēṣitō dūta stvatsakāśamihāgataḥ.

tvadviyōgēna duḥkhārta ssa tvāṅ kauśalamabravīt৷৷5.34.34৷৷


vīryavān heroic, yaḥ who, nacirāt soon, rōṣapramuktai: released in great anger, jvaladbhiḥ by burning, pāvakaiḥ iva like fire, iṣubhi with arrows, saṅkhyē in war, rāvaṇam Ravana, vadhiṣyati would slay, tēna therefore, dūtaḥ envoy, prēṣitaḥ sent, iha here, tvatsakāśam your presence, āgataḥ I have come, tvadviyōgēna due to separation from you, duḥkhārtaḥ filled with sorrow, saḥ he, tvām to you, kauśalam welfare, abravīt asking.

"Heroic Rama will soon release many scorching, fiery arrows in anger and kill Ravana. I seek your permission as an envoy of Rama. Filled with grief by your separation, he has made inquiries about your welfare.
lakṣmaṇaśca mahātējāssumitrānandavardhanaḥ.

abhivādya mahābāhussa tvāṅ kauśalamabravīt৷৷5.34.35৷৷


mahātējāḥ brilliant, sumitrānandassavardhanaḥ delight of Sumitra, mahābāhuḥ long-armed one, saḥ lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmna, tvām to you, abhivādya offering salutations, kauśalam welfare, abravīt enquired.

"The brilliant, long-armed Lakshmana, delight of Sumitra enquires about your welfare and offers salutations to you.
rāmasya ca sakhā dēvi sugrīvō nāma vānaraḥ.

rājā vānaramukhyānāṅ sa tvāṅ kauśalamabravīt৷৷5.34.36৷৷


dēvi O goddess-like lady!, rāmasya Rama's, sakhā friend, vānaramukhyānām of vanara chiefs, rājā king, sugrīvō nāma called Sugriva, saḥ vānaraḥ that vanara, tvām you, kauśalam well-being, abravīt
asked.

"O goddess like lady! Rama's friend Sugriva, king of vanara chieftans inquires about your well-being.
nityaṅ smarati rāmastvāṅ sasugrīva ssalakṣmaṇaḥ.

diṣṭyā jīvasi vaidēhi rākṣasīvaśamāgatā৷৷5.34.37৷৷


sasugrīvaḥ together with Sugriva, salakṣmaṇaḥ and Lakshmna, rāmaḥ Rama, tvām you, nityam always, smarati remembers, vaidēhi Vaidehi, rākṣasīvaśam under the clutches of she-demons, āgatā come, diṣṭyā luckily, jīvasi you are alive.

"O Vaidehi! Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva always remember you. Luckily you are alive even though you are under the clutches of she-demons.
nacirāddrakṣyasē rāmaṅ lakṣmaṇaṅ ca mahābalam.

madhyē vānarakōṭīnāṅ sugrīvaṅ cāmitaujasam৷৷5.34.38৷৷


rāmam Rama, mahābalam mighty, lakṣmaṇaṅ Lakshmana, vānarakōṭīnām among crores of vanaras, madhyē in the midst, amitaujasam of a hero of unlimited prowess, sugrīvaṅ ca also Sugriva, nacirāt very soon, drakṣyasē you will see.

"Very soon you will see mighty Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva of unlimited prowess surrounded by crores of vanaras.
ahaṅ sugrīvasacivō hanumānnāma vānaraḥ.

praviṣṭō nagarīṅ laṅkāṅ laṅghayitvā mahōdadhim৷৷5.34.39৷৷


aham I am, sugrīvasacivaḥ minister of Sugriva, hanumānnāma called Hanuman, vānaraḥ a vanara, mahōdadhim great ocean, laṅghayitvā having leaped, laṅkāṅ nagarīm city of Lanka, praviṣṭaḥ I have entered.

"I am Sugriva's minister known as Hanuman, a vanara who entered the city of Lanka after leaping over the great ocean.
kṛtvā mūrdhni padanyāsaṅ rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ.

tvāṅ draṣṭumupayātō.haṅ samāśritya parākramam৷৷5.34.40৷৷


durātmanaḥ cruel-minded, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, mūrdhni: on the head, padanyāsam placing my foot, kṛtvā of having done, parākramam valour, samāśritya using, aham I, tvām you, draṣṭum to see, upayātaḥ came here.

"Setting my foot with my valour on the head of the cruel-minded Ravana, using my valour, I came here to see you.
nāhamasmi tathā dēvi yathā māmavagacchasi.

viśaṅkā tyajyatāmēṣā śraddhatsva vadatō mama৷৷5.34.41৷৷


dēvi O goddess-like lady!, mām me, yathā as, avagacchasi you suppose, aham I, tathā like that, nāsmi I am not, ēṣā such, viśaṅkā suspicion, tyajyatām shake off, vadataḥ as I speak, mama my, śraddhatsva you may trust.

"O goddess-like lady! I am not a deceitful person as you suppose me to be. Shake off your suspicion as I speak to you and trust me."
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē catustriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyfourth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
