[Hanuman further narrates his story to Sita -- Gives description of Rama and Lakshmana]

tāṅ tu rāmakathāṅ śrutvā vaidēhī vānararṣabhāt.

uvāca vacanaṅ sāntvamidaṅ madhurayā girā৷৷5.35.1৷৷


vaidēhī Vaidehi, vānararṣabhāt from the bull among vanaras, tām that, rāmakathām Rama's story, śrutvā heard, madhurayā in sweet, girā word, sāntvam polite, idam these, vacanam words, uvāca spoke.

On hearing about Rama from the bull among vanaras, thus spoke Vaidehi politely in a sweet voice:
kva tē rāmēṇa saṅsargaḥ kathaṅ jānāsi lakṣmaṇam.

vānarāṇāṅ narāṇāṅ ca kathamāsītsamāgamaḥ৷৷5.35.2৷৷


tē to you, rāmēṇa with Rama, saṅsargaḥ contact, kva where, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, katham how, jānāsi do you assess, vānarāṇām of vanaras, narāṇāṅ ca a human, samāgamaḥ union, katham how, āsīt took place.

"Where did you come in contact with Rama? How did you assess Lakshmana? How did an alliance of vanaras and humans take place?
yāni rāmasya liṅgāni lakṣmaṇasya ca vānara.

tāni bhūyassamācakṣva na māṅ śōkassamāviśēt৷৷5.35.3৷৷


vānara O vanara, rāmasya Rama's, lakṣmaṇasya ca and Lakshmana's, yāni those, liṅgāni identification marks, tāni those, samācakṣva you may tell, mām to me, bhūyaḥ again, śōkaḥ sorrow, na not, samāviśēt entire account.

"O vanara! tell me all about the identification marks of Rama and Lakshmana again so that grief does not enter my mind.
kīdṛśaṅ tasya saṅsthānaṅ rūpaṅ rāmasya kīdṛśam.

kathamūrū kathaṅ bāhū lakṣmaṇasya ca śaṅsa mē৷৷5.35.4৷৷


tasya his, rāmasya Rama's, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, saṅsthānam form, kīdṛśam how, rūpam form, kīdṛśam how does his look, ūrū thighs, katham how, bāhū arms, katham how, mē to me, śaṅsa tell.

"What does Rama look like? And Laksmana? How are his thighs, arms? Tell me".
ēvamuktastu vaidēhyā hanumānmārutātmajaḥ.

tatō rāmaṅ yathātattvamākhyātumupacakramē৷৷5.35.5৷৷


vaidēhyā by Vaidehi, ēvam in that manner, uktaḥ spoken, mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, tataḥ thereafter, rāmam Rama, yathātattvam as it is, ākhyātum to describe, upacakramē he started telling.

Questioned thus by Vaidehi, Hanuman, son of the Wind-god started describing Rama's physique as it is.
jānantī bata diṣṭyā māṅ vaidēhi paripṛcchasi.

bhartuḥ kamalapattrākṣi saṅsthānaṅ lakṣmaṇasya ca৷৷5.35.6৷৷


kamalapattrākṣi eyes like lotus petals, vaidēhi Vaidehi, jānantī even though you know, diṣṭyā by good fortune, bhartuḥ husband's, lakṣmaṇasya ca and Lakshmana's, saṅsthānam form and distinguishing marks, paripṛcchasi have asked, bata indeed.

"O Vaidehi with eyes like lotus petals! although you know your husband's and Lakshmana's form and distinguishing marks, it is my good fortune that you asked me
(to describe them).
yāni rāmasya cihnāni lakṣmaṇasya ca yāni vai.

lakṣitāni viśālākṣi vadataśśṛṇu tāni mē৷৷5.35.7৷৷


viśālākṣi O large-eyed lady, rāmasya Rama's, yāni lakṣaṇāni those distinguishing marks, lakṣmaṇasya ca and Lakshmana's, yāni those, lakṣitāni signs, tāni them, vadataḥ as I describe, mē myself, śṛṇu listen.

"O large-eyed lady! I will describe those distinguishing marks of Rama and Lakshmana Listen.
rāmaḥ kamalapattrākṣa ssarvasattvamanōharaḥ.

rūpadākṣiṇyasampannaḥ prasūtō janakātmajē৷৷5.35.8৷৷


janakātmajē O Janaka's daughter, rāmaḥ Rama, kamalapattrākṣaḥ one who has eyes like lotus petals, sarvasattvamanōharaḥ one who delights all beings, rūpadākṣiṇyasampannaḥ endowed richly with charm and politeness, prasūtaḥ born with.

"O daughter of Janaka! Rama with eyes like lotus petals is a person born with a delightful form, richly endowed with indescribable charm and politeness.
tējasā.ditya saṅkāśaḥ kṣamayā pṛthivīsamaḥ.

bṛhaspatisamō buddhyā yaśasā vāsavōpamaḥ৷৷5.35.9৷৷


tējasā in effulgence, ādityasaṅkāśaḥ vies with the Sun, kṣamayā in tolerance, pṛthivīsamaḥ equals the earth, buddhyā in intelligence, bṛhaspatisamaḥ equal to Brihaspathi, yaśasā in fame, vāsavōpamaḥ equals Indra.

"He vies with the Sun in effulgence, with earth in forbearance, with Brihaspati in intelligence, and in fame with Indra.
rakṣitā jīvalōkasya svajanasyābhirakṣitā.

rakṣitā svasya vṛttasya dharmasya ca parantapaḥ৷৷5.35.10৷৷


parantapaḥ scorcher of enemies, jīvalōkasya of the world of living beings, rakṣitā protector, svajanasya of his own people, abhirakṣitā protector, svasya of his own, vṛttasya of the race, dharmasya ca and guards righteousness

"Rama is a protector of the entire world of living beings not to speak of his own people. He is a protector of his own race. He guards righteousness. He is a scorcher of enemies.
rāmō bhāmini lōkasya cāturvarṇyasya rakṣitā.

maryādānāṅ ca lōkasya kartā kārayitā ca saḥ৷৷5.35.11৷৷


bhāmini O beautiful lady, rāmaḥ Rama, lōkasya world's, cāturvarṇyasya of the four classes of society, rakṣitā protector, saḥ he, lōkānām of all the worlds, maryādānām code and conduct, kartā maker, kārayitācaiva will make others follow.

"O beautiful lady! Rama is a protector of the four classes of society (Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaisya and Sudra) in the world. He follows codes of conduct and makes others follow them.
arciṣmānarcitō.tyarthaṅ brahmacaryavratē sthitaḥ.

sādhūnāmupakārajñaḥ pracārajñaśca karmaṇām৷৷5.35.12৷৷


arciṣmān luminous, atyartham intensely, arcitaḥ worshipped, brahmacaryavratē observing the vow of self-control, sthitaḥ one who is steadfast, sādhūnām for the holy men, upakārajñaḥ recognises right action, karmaṇām rites, pracārajñaśca of the ways of administration.

"He is luminous and highly revered. He observes vow of self-control. He is steadfast and recognises services rendered by sages. He is aware of the rites and the ways of administration.
rājavidyāvinītaśca brāhmaṇānāmupāsitā.

śrutavānśīlasampannō vinītaśca parantapaḥ৷৷5.35.13৷৷


rājavidyāvinītaśca well-trained in state-craft, brāhmaṇānām of the brahmins, upāsitā a devotee, śrutavān learned in scriptures, śīlasampannaḥ endowed with excellent conduct, vinītaḥ is disciplined, parantapaḥ is a scorcher of enemies.

"He is well-trained in state-craft. He is devoted to brahmins. Endowed with an excellent conduct, he is learned in scriptures and a scorcher of enemies.
yajurvēdavinītaśca vēdavidbhissupūjitaḥ.

dhanurvēdē ca vēdēṣu vēdāṅgēṣu ca niṣṭhitaḥ৷৷5.35.14৷৷


yajurvēdavinītaśca versed in Yajurveda, vēdavidbhiḥ by the knowers of the Vedas, supūjitaḥ respected, dhanurvēdē ca and in Dhanurveda also, vēdēṣu in other Vedas also, vēdāṅgēṣu ca Vedangas (auxillary Vedas) also, niṣṭhitaḥ is an expert.

"He is versed in Yajurveda and is respected by Vedic scholars. He has mastered Dhanurveda and other Vedas and auxillary Vedas as well.
vipulāṅsō mahābāhuḥ kambugrīvaśśubhānanaḥ.

gūḍhajatrussutāmrākṣō rāmō dēvi janai śśrutaḥ৷৷5.35.15৷৷


dēvi goddess like lady, rāmaḥ Rama, vipulāṅ saḥ broad-shouldered, mahābāhuḥ strong-armed, kambugrīvaḥ with conch-shaped neck, śubhānanaḥ with an auspicious countenance, gūḍhajatruḥ has round shoulders, sutāmrākṣaḥ coppery-red eyes janaiḥ in all worlds, śrutaḥ renowned.

"O god-like lady! Rama has broad shoulders, strong arms, conch-shaped neck and an auspicious countenance. With his fleshy round arms and coppery-red eyes, he is renowned in all the worlds.
dundubhisvananirghōṣa ssnigdhavarṇaḥ pratāpavān.

sama ssamavibhaktāṅgō varṇaṅ śyāmaṅ samāśritaḥ৷৷5.35.16৷৷


dundubhisvananirghōṣaḥ his tone is resonant like the drums, snigdhavarṇaḥ has beautiful shining complexion, pratāpavān full of valour, samaḥ not too tall or short, samavibhaktāṅgaḥ his limbs are symmetrical, śyāmam dark, varṇam colour, samāśritaḥ has proportionate limbs.

"His tone is resonant like drums, he has a beautiful, dark, shining complexion. He has symmetrical, well- proportioned limbs. He is neither too tall nor too short.
tristhirastripralambaśca trisamastriṣu cōnnataḥ.

tritāmrastriṣu ca snigdhō gambhīrastriṣu nityaśaḥ৷৷5.35.17৷৷


tristhiraḥ has the three stiff limbs (chest, fist and wrists), tripralambaśca long in three (arms, eye-brows and scrotum), trisamaḥ has three even parts (locks of hair, knees and testicles), triṣu elevated in three parts (abdomen, navel and chest), unnataḥ raised, triṣu ca all the three parts (soles, nails and eyes), snigdhaḥ has coppery reddish colour, nityaśaḥ all over, triṣu in the three parts (the underlines of feet, the hair and the reproductive organs), gambhīraḥ is majestic.

"He has three stiff parts, three long parts, three even parts, three shining parts, elevated in three parts, has three raised parts, his body has lines in three parts and is of coppery reddish colour in three parts. He has a majestic look.
trivalīvāṅstryavanataścaturvyaṅgastriśīrṣavān.

catuṣkalaścaturlēkhaścatuṣkiṣkuścatu ssamaḥ৷৷5.35.18৷৷


trivalīvān has three folds on his neck, stryavanataḥ his nipples and middle of his soles are depressed, caturvyaṅgaḥ four parts of his body are depressed-neck, penis, shanks and back, triśīrṣavān has three spirals in the head, catuṣkalaḥ has four lines under his thumb, caturlēkhaḥ has four lines on the forehead, catuṣkiṣkuḥ he is four cubits in height, catussamaḥ he has arms, knees, cheeks and thighs well proportioned

"He has three folds in the skin of his neck and belly, is depressed in the middle of his soles and the nipples, undersized at four places-the neck, penis, shanks and back, has three spirals on his head, has four lines under his thumb, has four lines on his forehead, he is a person with four cubits in height and symmetrical arms, cheeks and thighs.
caturdaśasamadvandvaścaturdaṅṣṭraścaturgatiḥ.

mahōṣṭhahanunāsaśca pañcasnigdhō.ṣṭavaṅśavān৷৷5.35.19৷৷


caturdaśasamadvandvaḥ he is person with the fourteen parts of his body (eye-brows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, knees, testicles, loins, arms, legs and buttocks) in good proportion, caturdaṅṣṭraḥ he is one with four sharp teeth, caturgatiḥ he moves like a lion, leopard, elephant and bull as occasion demands, mahōṣṭhahanunāsaśca he has sharp nose, charming lips and jaws, pañcasnigdha: he is one with five smooth parts (hair, eyes, skin, teeth and feet), aṣṭavaṅśavān his eight parts of the body (backbone, trunk, limbs, fingers, toes, nose, eyes and testicles) are long.

"He is a person with his pairs of eye-brows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, knees, testicles, loins, arms, legs and buttocks in good symmetry; he has four sharp teeth. He walks in different gaits like a lion, leopard, elephant and bull as occasion demands; he has sharp nose, charming lips and jaws. He has smooth hair, eyes, skin, teeth and feet and his eight parts of his body namely back, trunk, limbs, fingers, toes, eyes and testicles are long.
daśapadmō daśabṛhattribhirvyāptō dviśuklavān.

ṣaḍunnatō navatanustribhirvyāpnōti rāghavaḥ৷৷5.35.20৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, daśapadmaḥ ten lotus-like limbs (eyes, face, mouth, tongue, lips, cheeks, nipples, nails, feet and hands), daśabṛhat he is one with ten well-proportioned limbs (head, forehead, ears, neck, chest, heart, belly, hands, legs, buttocks), tribhiḥ covered with three aspects (splendour, fame and glory), vyāptaḥ well known, dviśuklavān two white limbs- teeth and eyes, ṣaḍunnataḥ he has six elevated limbs (nose, shoulders, forehead, chest and arm pits), navatanuḥ has nine fine features (moustache, nails, knuckles, beard, skin, hair, penis, acumen, perception), tribhiḥ he pursues spiritual merit, worldly
comforts and sensual delight in three periods-forenoon, middday and evening of the day, vyāpnōti follows righteous principles.

"Ten limbs of the body resemble lotuses. He has proportionate limbs. He is known by the virtue of his spledour, fame and glory. Both his teeth and eyes are fair. Six parts of his body are elevated, nine parts of his body are fine and sharp. He pursues spiritual merit, worldly comfort and sensual delight in three periods of the day-forenoon, midday and evening. He always adopts the righteous way of life.
satyadharmaparaśśrīmān saṅgrahānugrahē rataḥ.

dēśakālavibhāgajñassarvalōkapriyaṅvadaḥ৷৷5.35.21৷৷


satyadharmaparaḥ established in truth and righteousness, śrīmān prosperous, saṅgrahānugrahē rataḥ he is involved in both accumulation and favourable disposition towards others, dēśakālavibhāgajñaḥ who discharges his duties at proper time and place, sarvalōkapriyaṅvadaḥ who is loved by all for his endearing words.

"He is ever established in truth and righteousness. He is prosperous and desires to accumulate wealth in order to shower favour on others. He knows the right use of time and place in discharging his duties. He has endeared himself to all by his words.
bhrātā tasya ca dvaimātrassaumitriraparājitaḥ.

anurāgēṇa rūpēṇa guṇaiścaiva tathāvidhaḥ৷৷5.35.22৷৷


tasya his, dvaimātraḥ born of a different mother, bhrātā brother, aparājitaḥ one who has never been defeated, saumitriḥ Saumitri, anurāgēṇa in affection, rūpēṇa in charm, guṇaiścaiva in virtues, tathāvidhaḥ similar to him.

"His invincible brother Saumitri born of a different mother is a replica of Rama in affection, charm and virtues.
tāvubhau naraśārdūlau tvaddarśanasamutsukau.

vicinvantau mahīṅ kṛtsnāmasmābhirabhisaṅgatau৷৷5.35.23৷৷


naraśārdūlau tiger among men, tau they, ubhau both, tvaddarśanasamutsukau eager to see you, kṛtsnām entire, mahīm earth, vicinvantau both searching for, asmābhiḥ by us, abhisaṅgatau they met us.

"While earnestly searching for you all over the earth both tigers among men came in contact with us.
tvāmēva mārgamāṇau tau vicarantau vasundharām.

dadarśaturmṛgapatiṅ pūrvajēnāvarōpitam৷৷5.35.24৷৷

ṛśyamūkasya pṛṣṭhē tu bahupādapasaṅkulē.

bhrāturbhayārtamāsīnaṅ sugrīvaṅ priyadarśanam৷৷5.35.25৷৷


tvāmēva for you, mārgamāṇau while searching, vasundharām all over the earth, vicarantau while both were wandering, tau they both, bahupādapasaṅkulē filled with many trees, ṛśyamūkasya pṛṣṭhē on the mountain Rshyamuka, āsīnam seated, pūrvajēna by the elder brother, avarōpitam one who has been thrown out, bhrātuḥ brother's, bhayārtam frightened, priyadarśanam one who is pleasing to see, mṛgapatim lord of animals, sugrīvam Sugriva, dadarśatuḥ both of them saw.

"While both of them were wandering, searching for you all over the earth they saw Sugriva, the lord of animals who had been thrown out of kingship by his elder brother and was living on the mountain Rshyamuka frightened of him.
vayaṅ tu harirājaṅ taṅ sugrīvaṅ satyasaṅgaram.

paricaryāmahē rājyātpūrvajēnāvarōpitam৷৷5.35.26৷৷


vayaṅ tu we too, pūrvajēna by his elder brother, rājyāt from the kingdom, avarōpitam deposed, satyasaṅgaram one who is committed to truth, harirājam king of vanaras, tam him, sugrīvam Sugriva, paricaryāmahē we serve him.

"Sugriva, king of vanaras who is committed to defend truth has been deposed from the kingdom by his elder brother. We keep attending on him.
tatastau cīravasanau dhanuḥ pravarapāṇinau.

ṛśyamūkasya śailasya ramyaṅ dēśamupāgatau৷৷5.35.27৷৷


tataḥ then, cīravasanau clad in bark robes, dhanuḥpravarapāṇinau armed with powerful bows, tau both, ṛśyamūkasya śailasya on the Rshyamukha mountain, ramyam beautiful, dēśam location, upāgatau both reached.

"Both the princes clad in bark robes and armed with powerful bows reached the beautiful location of Rshyamukha mountain.
sa tau dṛṣṭvā naravyāghrau dhanvinau vānararṣabhaḥ.

avaplutō girēstasya śikharaṅ bhayamōhitaḥ৷৷5.35.28৷৷


saḥ he, vānararṣabhaḥ bull among vanaras, dhanvinau armed with bows, tau both of them, naravyāghrau tigers among men, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, bhayamōhitaḥ deluded with fear, tasya from that, girēḥ mountain, śikharam top, abhiplutaḥ jumped.

"On seeing the tigers among men armed with bows, Sugriva, the bull among vanaras jumped from the mountain deluded with fear and reached the peak.
tatassa śikharē tasminvānarēndrō vyavasthitaḥ.

tayōssamīpaṅ māmēva prēṣayāmāsa satvaram৷৷5.35.29৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, saḥ he, vānarēndraḥ lord of vanaras, tasmin on that, śikharē mountain top, vyavasthitaḥ staying there, māmēva me only, tayōḥ of both of them, samīpam towads, satvaram quickly, prēṣayāmāsa sent.

"Thereafter the lord of vanaras staying on the mountain top quickly sent me to meet both of them.
tāvahaṅ puruṣavyāghrau sugrīvavacanātprabhū.

rūpalakṣaṇasampannau kṛtāñjalirupasthitaḥ৷৷5.35.30৷৷


aham I, sugrīvavacanāt according to the instruction of Sugriva, puruṣavyāghrau two tigers among men, prabhū two lords, rūpalakṣaṇasampannau both endowed with charming appearance and auspicious marks, tau both, kṛtāñjaliḥ joined palms in salutation, upasthitaḥ approached.

tau parijñātatattvārthau mayā prītisamanvitau.

pṛṣṭhamārōpya taṅ dēśaṅ prāpitau puruṣarṣabhau৷৷5.35.31৷৷


parijñātatattvarthau realised the true position, prītisamanvitau filled with pleasure, puruṣarṣabhau two bulls among men, tau both, mayā by me, pṛṣṭham back, ārōpya placing, taṅ dēśam to that place, prāpitau carried.

"I recognised the true status of both the mighty men who were filled with joy, placed them on my back, and reached the mountain-top.
nivēditau ca tattvēna sugrīvāya mahātmanē.

tayōranyōnyasallāpādbhṛśaṅ prītirajāyata৷৷5.35.32৷৷


mahātmanē to the great self, sugrīvāya to Sugriva, tattvēna faithfully, nivēditau reported by me, tayōḥ of both of them, anyōnyasallāpāt got to know each other through conversation, bhṛśam fond, prītiḥ friendship, ajāyata developed.

"I reported faithfully about both the high-souled men to Sugriva. As they got to know each other through conversation a fast friendship developed between them.
tatastau prītisampannau harīśvaranarēśvarau.

parasparakṛtāśvāsau kathayā pūrvavṛttayā৷৷5.35.33৷৷


tataḥ then, prītisampannau full of joy, tau both, harīśvaranarēśvarau king of monkeys and the king of people, pūrvavṛttayā with their past, kathayā with account, parasparakṛtāśvāsau they consoled each other.

tatassa sāntvayāmāsa sugrīvaṅ lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ.

strīhētōrvālinā bhrātrā nirastamurutējasā৷৷5.35.34৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, saḥ he, lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ the elder brother of Lakshmana, urutējasā with great prowess, bhrātrā by the brother, vālinā by Vali, strīhētō on account of a woman, nirastam deposed, sugrīvam Sugriva, sāntvayāmāsa consoled.

"Then Rama, consoled Sugriva who was dethroned and abandoned on acount of a woman by his brother Vali, endowed with great prowess.
tatastvannāśajaṅ śōkaṅ rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ.

lakṣmaṇō vānarēndrāya sugrīvāya nyavēdayat৷৷5.35.35৷৷


tataḥ then, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ one who is adept in accomplishing tasks with ease, rāmasya Rama's, tvannāśajam on account of your loss, śōkam grief, vānarēndrāya to the lord of vanaras, sugrīvāya to Sugriva, nyavēdayat revealed.

"Then Lakshmana spoke to the lord of vanaras, Sugriva about your loss and the grief caused to Rama, who is adept in accomplishing difficult deeds with ease.
sa śrutvā vānarēndrastu lakṣmaṇēnēritaṅ vacaḥ.

tadāsīnniṣprabhō.tyarthaṅ grahagrasta ivāṅśumān৷৷5.35.36৷৷


saḥ he, vānarēndrastu to the king of vanaras, lakṣmaṇēna by Lakshmana, īritam spoken vacaḥ words, śrutvā having heard, tadā then, grahagrastaḥ overshadowed by the planet, aṅśumāniva like the Sun, atyartham extremely, niṣprabhaḥ lustreless, āsīt became.

"Having heard the words of Lakshmana, the king of vanaras became extremely lustreless like the Sun overshadowed by the planet Rahu.
tatastvadgātraśōbhīni rakṣasā hriyamāṇayā.

yānyābharaṇajālāni pātitāni mahītalē৷৷5.35.37৷৷

tāni sarvāṇi rāmāya ānīya hariyūthapāḥ.

saṅhṛṣṭā darśayāmāsurgatiṅ tu na vidustava৷৷5.35.38৷৷


tataḥ at that time, rakṣasā by the demon, hriyamāṇayā when you were borne away, tvadgātraśōbhinī adorned your limbs, yāni those, ābharaṇajālāni bundle of ornaments, pātitāni dropped down, tāni sarvāṇi all of them, ānīya brought, hariyūthapāḥ vanara leaders, saṅhṛṣṭāḥ with great joy, rāmāya to Rama, darśayāmāsuḥ showed, tava your, gatiṅ tu whereabouts, na viduḥ did not know.

tāni rāmāya dattāni mayaivōpahṛtāni ca.

svanavantyavakīrṇāni tasminvigatacētasi৷৷5.35.39৷৷


mayaiva by me, upahṛtāni collected, tāni those ornaments, rāmāya to Rama, dattāni gave, tasmin them, vigatacētasi lost senses, svanavanti making jingling sound, avakīrṇāni having scattered.

"I collected the ornaments and gave them to Rama. He lost his senses on seeing the
jingling ornaments scattered.
tānyaṅkē darśanīyāni kṛtvā bahuvidhaṅ tava.

tēna dēvaprakāśēna dēvēna paridēvitam৷৷5.35.40৷৷


darśanīyāni beautiful ones, tava your, tāni those, aṅkē on his lap, kṛtvā having placed, dēvaprakāśēna by an effulgent one looking like the divine, tēna by him, dēvēna divine self, bahuvidham in many ways, paridēvitam wailed.

"The divine self who is effulgent like god wailed in many ways placing the beautiful ornaments on his lap.
paśyatastāni rudatastāmyataśca punaḥ punaḥ.

prādīpayandāśarathēstāni śōkahutāśanam৷৷5.35.41৷৷


tāni them, paśyataḥ as looked at, rudataḥ while he wept, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, tāmyataśca regretting, dāśarathēḥ Dasaratha's son Rama's, śōkahutāśanam fire in the form of grief, tāni them, prādīpayan inflamed.

"Rama looked at them and wept clasping them again and again in grief which inflamed like fire.
śayitaṅ ca ciraṅ tēna duḥkhārtēna mahātmanā.

mayāpi vividhairvākyaiḥ kṛcchrādutthāpitaḥ punaḥ৷৷5.35.42৷৷


duḥkhārtēna immersed in sorrow, tēna by him, mahātmanā by the great self, śayitaṅ ca lay down, mayāpi by me also, vividhaiḥ by many, vākyaiḥ by words, kṛcchrāt with great difficulty, punaḥ again, utthāpitaḥ helped to get up.

"Rama, the great self, immersed in sorrow lay down on the ground. I also consoled him with great difficulty and helped him to get up.
tāni dṛṣṭvā mahābāhurdarśayitvā muhurmuhuḥ.

rāghavassaha saumitrissugrīvē sa nyavēdayat৷৷5.35.43৷৷


mahābāhuḥ long-armed one, saḥ rāghavaḥ that Rama, sahasaumitriḥ along with Lakshmana, tāni those, muhuḥ muhuḥ again and again, darśayitvā after showing, sugrīvē to Sugriva, nyavēdayat presented.

"Long-armed Rama along with Lakshmana looked at them again and again and gave them to the care of Sugriva.
sa tavādarśanādāryē rāghavaḥ paritapyatē.

mahatā jvalatā nityamagninēvāgniparvataḥ৷৷5.35.44৷৷


āryē O divine lady, saḥ rāghavaḥ that Rama, tava your, adarśanāt separation from you, nityam always, jvalatā burning, mahatā great, agninā in fire, agniparvataḥ iva like a mountain of fire, paritapyatē ever blazing.

"O divine lady! on account of your separation he is ever blazing like a mountain of fire (Samvartaka).
tvatkṛtē tamanidrā ca śōkaścintā ca rāghavam.

tāpayanti mahātmānamagnyagāramivāgnayaḥ৷৷5.35.45৷৷


tvatkṛtē on account of, mahātmānam the great one, taṅ rāghavam that Rama, anidrā ca not sleeping, śōkaḥ grief, cintā ca intense anxiety, agnyagāram like a furnace, agnayaḥ iva like the three fires, tāpayanti keep intensely heated.

"Rama is burning like a furnace by (three fires) sleeplessness, grief and intense anxiety just as the three sacred fires keep a fire-sanctuary intensely heated.
tavādarśanaśōkēna rāghavaḥ pravicālyatē.

mahatā bhūmikampēna mahāniva śilōccayaḥ৷৷5.35.46৷৷


tava your, adarśanaśōkēna by the sorrow of not being able to see you, rāghavaḥ Rama of Raghu dynasty, mahatā with great, bhūmikampēna by earthquake, mahān great, śilōcchayaḥ lofty mountain, pravicālyatē is shaken.

"On account of sorrow caused by not being able to see you, Rama of Raghu dynasty is shaken up like a lofty mountain is shaken by earthquake.
kānanāni suramyāṇi nadīḥ prasravaṇāni ca.

caranna ratimāpnōti tvāmapaśyannṛpātmajē৷৷5.35.47৷৷


nṛpātmajē daughter of a king, tvām you, apaśyan unable to see, suramyāṇi very delightful, kānanāni forests, nadīḥ rivers, prasravaṇāni ca and streams, caran while moving, ratim happiness, na āpnōti not finding.

"Oh princess! unable to see you, Rama has found no joy in roaming delightful forests, rivers and streams.
sa tvāṅ manujaśārdūlaḥ kṣipraṅ prāpsyati rāghavaḥ.

samitrabāndhavaṅ hatvā rāvaṇaṅ janakātmajē৷৷5.35.48৷৷


janakātmajē Oh daughter of Janaka, manujaśārdūlaḥ a tiger among men, saḥ rāghavaḥ that Rama, samitrabāndhavam along with his friends and relatives, rāvaṇam Ravana, hatvā after killing, tvām you, kṣipram soon, prāpsyati will attain.

"Oh daughter of Janaka! after killing Ravana, along with his friends and relatives Rama, the tiger among men, will meet you.
sahitau rāmasugrīvāvubhāvakurutāṅ tadā.

samayaṅ vālinaṅ hantuṅ tava cānvēṣaṇaṅ tathā৷৷5.35.49৷৷


tadā then, rāmasugrīvau Rama and Sugriva, ubhau both, sahitau together with, vālinam Vali, hantum to kill, tathā likewise, tava your, anvēṣaṇam search, samayam agreement, akurutām reached.

"(Having become friends) Rama and Sugriva together reached an agreement to kill Vali and search for you.
tatastābhyāṅ kumārābhyāṅ vīrābhyāṅ sa harīśvaraḥ.

kiṣkindhāṅ samupāgamya vālī yuddhē nipātitaḥ৷৷5.35.50৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, vīrābhyām by both the heroes, tābhyām by both of them, kumārābhyām by both princes, kiṣkindhām to Kishkinda, samupāgamya after reaching, harīśvaraḥ king of vanaras, saḥ that, vālī Vali, yuddhē in war, nipātitaḥ killed.

"Thereafter both the princes together arrived at Kishkinda and killed Vali, king of vanaras in a combat.
tatō nihatya tarasā rāmō vālinamāhavē.

sarvarkṣaharisaṅghānāṅ sugrīvamakarōtpatim৷৷5.35.51৷৷


tataḥ then, rāmaḥ Rama, āhavē in a combat, tarasā quickly, vālinam Vali, nihatya killed, sugrīvam Sugriva, sarvarkṣaharisaṅghānām for all troops of vanaras, patim king, akarōt made.

"Then Rama quickly killed Vali in a combat and made Sugriva the lord of all troops of vanaras and bears.
rāmasugrīvayōraikyaṅ dēvyēvaṅ samajāyata.

hanumantaṅ ca māṅ viddhi tayōrdūtamihāgatam৷৷5.35.52৷৷


dēvi Oh Illustrious lady!, rāmasugrīvayōḥ of both Rama and Sugriva, aikyam alliance, ēvam in that way, samajāyata established, mām me, tayōḥ their, dūtam messenger, āgatam came here, hanumantam Hanuman, viddhi you may know.

"Oh Illustrious lady! In that manner alliance was established between Rama and Sugriva. Know me to be Hanuman, arrived here as their messenger.
svarājyaṅ prāpya sugrīvassamānīya harīśvarān.

tvadarthaṅ prēṣayāmāsa diśō daśa mahābalān৷৷5.35.53৷৷


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, svarājyam his kingdom, prāpya having obtained, mahābalān great army, harīśvarān monkey leaders, samānīya after collecting, tvadartham for your sake, daśa ten, diśaḥ directions, prēṣayāmāsa sent.

"Having obtained his kingdom Sugriva despatched the vanara leaders to all ten directions (to search for you).
ādiṣṭā vānarēndrēṇa sugrīvēṇa mahaujasā.

adrirājapratīkāśāssarvataḥ prasthitau mahīm৷৷5.35.54৷৷


vānarēndrēṇa by the monkey leaders, mahaujasā very powerful one, sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, ādiṣṭāḥ ordered, adrirājapratīkāśāḥ huge as the Himalayas, king of mountains, sarvataḥ all over, mahīm the earth, prasthitā started moving.

"Following Sugriva's orders, the powerful monkey leaders huge as the Himalayas, king of mountains went all over the earth (searching).
tatastē mārgamāṇā vai sugrīvavacanāturāḥ.

caranti vasudhāṅ kṛtsnāṅ vayamanyē ca vānarāḥ৷৷5.35.55৷৷


tataḥ then, tē they, vayam we, anyē others, vānarāḥ ca and the vanaras, sugrīvavacanāturāḥ eager to carry out Sugriva's order, mārgamāṇāḥ while searching, kṛtsnām entire, vasudhām the earth, caranti we are moving about.

"Following Sugriva's orders, we, the monkeys, since then are moving about searching
the entire earth eager to find you or to carry out Sugriva's orders.
aṅgadō nāma lakṣmīvānvālisūnurmahābalaḥ.

prasthitaḥ kapiśārdūlastribhāgabalasaṅvṛtaḥ৷৷5.35.56৷৷


lakṣmīvān prosperous, vālisūnuḥ Vali's son, mahābalaḥ mighty, aṅgadō nāma called Angada, hariśārdūlaḥ a tiger among vanaras, tribhāgabalasaṅvṛtaḥ together with one third of the army, prasthitaḥ departed.

tēṣāṅ nō vipraṇaṣṭānāṅ vindhyē parvatasattamē.

bhṛśaṅ śōkaparītānāmahōrātragaṇā gatāḥ৷৷5.35.57৷৷


vindhyē in Vindhya, parvatasattamē in the great mountain, vipraṇaṣṭānām of those who were lost, bhṛśam greatly, śōkaparītānām of those immersed in sorrow, tēṣām of all of them, naḥ of us, ahōrātragaṇāḥ many nights and days, gatāḥpassed

"We wasted many nights and days immersed in disappointment (for not being able to find you) and we missed our path in the great Vindhya mountain.
tē vayaṅ kāryanairāśyātkālasyātikramēṇa ca.

bhayācca kapirājasya prāṇāṅstyaktuṅ vyavasthitāḥ৷৷5.35.58৷৷


tē vayam we were, kāryanairāśyāt disappointed, kālasya of the time limit, atikramēṇa ca exceeding, kapirājasya of monkey king's, bhayācca out of fear also, prāṇān life also, tyaktum to give up, vyavasthitāḥ decided.

"We decided to give up our lives due to disappointment, transgression of the time limit fixed for us and fear of the monkey lord (fear of facing the king without finding you).
vicitya vanadurgāṇi giriprasravaṇāni ca.

anāsādya padaṅ dēvyāḥ prāṇāṅstyaktuṅ samudyatāḥ৷৷5.35.59৷৷


vanadurgāṇi impenetrable forest forts, giriprasravaṇāni ca mountain streams, vicitya having searched, dēvyāḥ the queen's, padam feet, anāsādya by not getting, prāṇān life, tyaktum to give up, samudyatāḥ we decided.

"We decided to give up our lives since we were unable to see the feet of the queen (Sita) even after searching the forest fortresses and the (banks of) mountain streams.
dṛṣṭvā prāyōpaviṣṭāṅśca sarvānvānarapuṅgavān.

bhṛśaṅ śōkārṇavē magnaḥ paryadēvayadaṅgadaḥ৷৷5.35.60৷৷

tava nāśaṅ ca vaidēhi vālinaśca vadhaṅ tathā.

prāyōpavēśamasmākaṅ maraṇaṅ ca jaṭāyuṣaḥ৷৷5.35.61৷৷


vaidēhi oh Vaidehi, prāyōpaviṣṭān when we decided to die, sarvān all, vānarapuṅgavān vanara leaders, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, aṅgadaḥ Angada, bhṛśam intensely, śōkārṇavē in the sea of sorrow, magnaḥ plunged, tava yourself, nāśaṅ ca not found, tathā vālinaḥ similarly Vali's, vadhaṅ ca and his killing, jaṭāyuṣaḥ Jatayu's, maraṇaṅ ca death also, asmākam all of us, prāyōpavēśam decision to die, paryadēvayat he was grieved.

tēṣāṅ nasvāmisandēśānnirāśānāṅ mumūrṣatām.

kāryahētōrivāyātaśśakunirvīryavānmahān৷৷5.35.62৷৷


svāmisandēśāt according to the king's cmmand (that who ever overstays would be killed), nirāśānām disappointed, mumūrṣatām when we were desiring to die, tēṣām for such of us, naḥ to
us, kāryahētōriva as if to fulfil the task, vīryavān powerful, mahān gigantic, śakuniḥ bird, āyātaḥ came.

"When we were disappointed (in tracing you) and were at the point of death having been commanded by the king (that whosoever overstays would be killed) a gigantic powerful bird appeared to fulfil our task.
gṛdhrarājasya sōdaryaḥ sampātirnāma gṛdhrarāṭ.

śrutvā bhrātṛvadhaṅ kōpādidaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷5.35.63৷৷


gṛdhrarājasya of the king of vultures, sōdaryaḥ brother, sampātirnāma called Sampati, gṛdhrarāṭ king of birds, bhrātṛvadham death of Jatayu, śrutvā on hearing, kōpāt with anger, idam this, vacanam word, abravīt spoke.

"That king of vultures, Sampati was the brother of king of birds Jatayu. Hearing about the death of his younger brother Sampati felt distresed and spoke in anger:
yavīyānkēna mē bhrātā hataḥ kva ca nipātitaḥ.

ētadākhyātumicchāmi bhavadbhirvānarōttamāḥ৷৷5.35.64৷৷


mē my, yavīyān younger, bhrātā brother, kēna by whom, hataḥ was killed, kva where, nipātitaḥ was he dropped, vānarōttamāḥ of best of vanaras, bhavadbhiḥ by you, ētat this, ākhyātum to tell, icchāmi I desire.

'O best of vanaras! by whom was my younger brother killed? Where was he dropped down? I wish you to tell me all about that.
aṅgadō.kathayattasya janasthānē mahadvadham.

rakṣasā bhīmarūpēṇa tvāmuddiśya yathātatham৷৷5.35.65৷৷


tvām you, uddiśya aiming at, bhīmarūpēṇa by a dreadful person, rakṣasā by the demon, janasthānē in Janasthana, mahadvadham great killing, yathātatham as it happened faithfully, aṅgadaḥ Angada, tasya
to him, akathayat told.

jaṭāyuṣō vadhaṅ śrutvā duḥkhitassō.ruṇātmajaḥ.

tvāṅ śaśaṅsa varārōhē vasantīṅ rāvaṇālayē৷৷5.35.66৷৷


varārōhē oh charming lady!, saḥ he, aruṇātmajaḥ Aruna's son, jaṭāyuṣaḥ Jatayu's, vadhaṅ death, śrutvā having heard, duḥkhitaḥ became sad, tvām yourself, rāvaṇālayē in Ravana's palace, vasantīm living, śaśaṅsa narrated to us.

"Having heard about the death of Jatayu, O charming lady! that Sampati Aruna's son felt sad and told us that you are at Ravana's palace.
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā sampātēḥ prītivardhanam.

aṅgadapramukhāstūrṇaṅ tatassamprasthitā vayam৷৷5.35.67৷৷


tasya his, sampātēḥ Samapati's, prītivardhanam that which was pleasing, tat that, vacanam word, śrutvā having heard, aṅgadapramukhāḥ Angada and others, vayam all of us, tūrṇam quickly, tataḥ from there, prasthitāḥ departed.

"Having heard Sampati's encouraging words all of us led by Angada departed immediately.
vindhyādutthāya samprāptā ssāgarasyāntamuttaram.

tvaddharśanakṛtōtsāhā hṛṣṭāstuṣṭāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ৷৷5.35.68৷৷


plavaṅgamāḥ vanaras, tvaddarśanakṛtōtsāhā enthused to see you, hṛṣṭāḥ joyfully, tuṣṭāḥ satisfied, vindhyāt from Vindhya, utthāya having got up, sāgarasya towards the sea, uttaram antam the limit of the northern direction, samprāptāḥ reached.

"The happy monkeys were satisfied. Enthusiastic about seeing you, they rose from the Vindhya mountain and reached the limit of the sea shore in the north.
aṅgadapramukhāssarvē vēlōpāntamupasthitāḥ.

cintāṅ jagmuḥ punarbhītāstvaddarśanasamutsukāḥ৷৷5.35.69৷৷


aṅgadapramukhāḥ Angada and other leaders, sarvē all, tvaddarśanamutsukāḥ enthusiastic to see you, vēlōpāntam sea shore, upasthitāḥ reached, bhītāḥ they were frightened, punaḥ again, cintām worry, jagmuḥ felt.

athāhaṅ harisainyasya sāgaraṅ prēkṣya sīdataḥ.

vyavadhūya bhayaṅ tīvraṅ yōjanānāṅ śataṅ plutaḥ৷৷5.35.70৷৷


atha then, aham I, sāgaram ocean, prēkṣya after looking at, sīdataḥ in desperate mood, harisainyasya Vanara army's, tīvram intense, bhayam fear, vyavadhūya after pushing aside, yōjanānām of yojanas, śatam one hundred, plutaḥ leaped.

"When the vanara army was feeling despondent at the sight of the ocean, I leaped across the sea, a hundred yojanas, pushing aside all my fear.
laṅkā cāpi mayā rātrau praviṣṭā rākṣasākulā.

rāvaṇaśca mayā dṛṣṭastvaṅ ca śōkapariplutā৷৷5.35.71৷৷


rākṣasākulā filled with demons, laṅkā cāpi Lanka also, mayā by me, rātrau at night, praviṣṭā entered, mayā by me, rāvaṇaśca Ravana also, dṛṣṭaḥ is seen, śōkapariplutā immersed in sorrow, tvaṅ ca you also.

"I entered at night the city of Lanka teeming with demons and saw Ravana and saw you immersed in sorrow.
ētattē sarvamākhyātaṅ yathāvṛttamananditē.

abhibhāṣasva māṅ dēvi dūtō dāśarathēraham৷৷5.35.72৷৷


aninditē O sinless lady, dēvi O divine lady, ētat this, sarvam everything, yathāvṛttam as it happened, tē to you, ākhyātam narrated, mām me, abhibhāṣasva you may speak, aham I, dāśarathēḥ Dasaratha's son, dūtaḥ messenger.

"O sinless lady! I have given you a faithful account. I am a messenger of Dasaratha's son. And you may speak now, O divine lady!
taṅ māṅ rāmakṛtōdyōgaṅ tvannimittamihāgatam.

sugrīvasacivaṅ dēvi buddhyasva pavanātmajam৷৷5.35.73৷৷


dēvi O divine lady!, taṅ mām such me, rāmakṛtōdyōgam have taken up Rama's mission, tvannimittam on your account, iha here, āgatam came, sugrīvasacivam minister of Sugriva, pavanātmajam son of Vayu, buddhyasva you may know.

"O divine lady! Know that I have come here for your cause carrying out the mission of Rama. I am Sugriva'a minister and son of the Wind-god.
kuśalī tava kākutsthassarvaśastrabhṛtāṅ varaḥ.

gurōrārādhanē yuktō lakṣmaṇaśca sulakṣaṇaḥ৷৷5.35.74৷৷


sarvaśastrabhṛtām among all wielders of weapons, varaḥ supreme, tava your, kākutstha Rama of the Kakutstha race, kuśalī he is keeping well, gurōḥ of his venerable teacher, ārādhanē in service, yuktaḥ engaged, sulakṣaṇaḥ a man of auspicious signs, lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana also.

"Your lord Rama of Kakutstha race, supreme among wielders of weapons is doing well. So is venerable Lakshmana endowed with auspicious signs engaged in serving him.
tasya vīryavatō dēvi bhartustava hitē rataḥ.

ahamēkastu samprāpta ssugrīvavacanādiha৷৷5.35.75৷৷


dēvi O queen, vīryavataḥ of valourous, tava your, bhartuḥ husband's, tasya his, hitē seeking welfare, rataḥ engaged, aham I, sugrīvavacanāt at the behest of Sugriva, iha here, ēkaḥ alone, prāptaḥ reached.

"O queen! seeking the welfare of your Valiant husband I came here at the behest of Sugriva all alone.
mayēyamasahāyēna caratā kāmarūpiṇā.

dakṣiṇā diganukrāntā tvanmārgavicayaiṣiṇā৷৷5.35.76৷৷


tvanmārgavicayaiṣiṇā while searching for your location, kāmarūpiṇā by a person who can take any form at will, asahāyēna without any help, caratā while moving, mayā by myself, iyam this, dakṣiṇā dik southern direction, anukrāntā reached.

"I can assume any form at my will. I searched for you without any help moving in the southern direction and reached this place .
diṣṭyāhaṅ harisainyānāṅ tvannāśamanuśōcatām.

apanēṣyāmi santāpaṅ tavābhigamaśaṅsanāt৷৷5.35.77৷৷


diṣṭyā fortunately for me, aham I, tvannāśam your loss, anuśōcatām regretting, harisainyānām of the vanara army, santāpam grief, tava your, abhigamaśaṅsanāt by letting them know, apanēṣyāmi I will dispel their sorrow.

"Fortunately for me I can finally dispel the fear of the vanara chiefs who are regretting your loss, by letting them know that you have been found.
diṣṭyā hi mama na vyarthaṅ dēvi sāgaralaṅghanam.

prāpsyāmyahamidaṅ diṣṭyā tvaddarśanakṛtaṅ yaśaḥ৷৷5.35.78৷৷


dēvi oh queen, diṣṭyā luckily, mama my, sāgaralaṅghanam crossing the ocean, na vyartham is not wasted, diṣṭyā fortunately, aham I, tvaddarśanakṛtam by the act of seeing you, idam thus, yaśaḥ fame, prāpsyāmi I will attain.

"Oh queen! luckily for me, crossing the ocean has not gone in vain. I am fortunate because I will attain fame of finding you.
rāghavaśca mahāvīryaḥ kṣipraṅ tvāmabhipatsyatē.

samitrabāndhavaṅ hatvā rāvaṇaṅ rākṣasādhipam৷৷5.35.79৷৷


mahāvīryaḥ mighty hero, rāghavaśca Raghava, samitrabāndhavam accompanied by friends and relatives, rākṣasādhipam king of demons, rāvaṇam Ravana, hatvā after killing, kṣipram very soon, tvām yourself, abhipatsyatē will reach you.

"Mighty Raghava will take you after killing Ravana, the king of demons along with his kith and kin.
mālyavānnāma vaidēhi girīṇāmuttamō giriḥ.

tatō gacchati gōkarṇaṅ parvataṅ kēsarī hariḥ৷৷5.35.80৷৷


vaidēhi Vaidehi, girīṇām among the mountains, uttamaḥ the best one, mālyavānnāma Malyavan, giriḥ mountain, tataḥ from there, kēsarī Kesari, hariḥ monkey, gōkarṇam Gokarna, parvatam mountain, gacchati went.

"Oh Vaidehi! there is a famous mountain called Malyavan. From there a monkey called Kesari went to mount Gokarna.
sa ca dēvarṣibhirdiṣṭaḥ pitā mama mahākapiḥ.

tīrthē nadīpatēḥ puṇyē śambasādanamuddharat৷৷5.35.81৷৷


dēvarṣibhiḥ by the divine sages, diṣṭaḥ predicted, mama my, pitā father, saḥ mahākapiḥ that great monkey, nadīpatēḥ of lord of rivers, ocean, puṇyē holy, tīrthē in a place, śambasādanam Sambasadanam, uddharat raised.

"He (Kesari) is said to be my father by the divine sages. He retrieved a piece of land in a holy spot of that sea shore and killed Sambasadana, a demon who was oppressing righteous people.
tasyāhaṅ hariṇaḥ kṣētrē jātō vātēna maithili.

hanumāniti vikhyātō lōkē svēnaiva karmaṇā৷৷5.35.82৷৷


maithili Mythili, aham I, tasya his, hariṇaḥ monkey's, kṣētrē in the land, vātēna by the Wind-god, jātaḥ born, svēna karmaṇā ēva by my own act, lōkē by people, hanumāniti Hanuman, vikhyātaḥ came to be known.

"O Mythili! I was born in that land retrieved by the Wind-god. I am known as Hanuman by virtue of my own action.
viśvāsārthaṅ tu vaidēhi bharturuktā mayā guṇāḥ.

acirādrāghavō dēvi tvāmitō nayitā.naghē৷৷5.35.83৷৷


vaidēhi Vaidehi!, viśvāsārtham for inspiring confidence, mayā by me, bhartuḥ your husband's, guṇāḥ qualities, uktāḥ are described, dēvi O queen!, rāghavaḥ Raghava, acirāt very soon, tvām you, itaḥ from here, nayitā he will take you away, anaghē lady free from sins.

"In order to inspire confidence in you about me I have narrated the virtues of your husband. O sinless queen! Rama will take you from here very soon".
ēvaṅ viśvāsitā sītā hētubhiśśōkakarśitā.

upapannairabhijñānairdūtaṅ tamavagacchati৷৷5.35.84৷৷


śōkakarśitā tormented by grief, sītā Sita, ēvam in that way, hētubhiḥ with possible reasons, viśvāsitā having trusted, upapannaiḥ by the evidences, abhijñānaiḥ with identification, tam him, dūtam as a messenger, avagacchati she understood.

The grief-stricken Sita trusted him by his logical presentation of reasons as well as identifications. She believed that he was a messenger (of Rama).
atulaṅ ca gatā harṣaṅ praharṣēṇa ca jānakī.

nētrābhyāṅ vakrapakṣmābhyāṅ mumōcānandajaṅ jalam৷৷5.35.85৷৷


jānakī Janaki, atulam immeasurable, harṣam happiness, gatā ca experienced, praharṣēṇa in her joy, vakrapakṣmābhyām through her curved eyelashes, nētrābhyām from both eyes, ānandajam arising out of joy, jalam tears, mumōca shed.

Janaki experienced immeasurable happiness and shed tears of joy through her curved eyes.
cāru tadvadanaṅ tasyāstāmraśuklāyatēkṣaṇam.

aśōbhata viśālākṣyā rāhumukta ivōḍurāṭ৷৷5.35.86৷৷


viśālākṣyāḥ of large-eyed lady, tasyāḥ her, cāru lovely, tāmraśuklāyatēkṣaṇam having wide white eyes with tinge of red corners, tat that, vadanam face, rāhumuktaḥ released from Rahu, uḍurāḍiva like the Moon, aśōbhata shone.

Her face with large eyes with a tinge of red corners shone like the Moon released from Rahu.
hanumantaṅ kapiṅ vyaktaṅ manyatē nānyathēti sā.

athōvāca hanūmāṅstāmuttaraṅ priyadarśanām৷৷5.35.87৷৷


sā she, hanumantam Hanuman, vyaktam clearly, kapim the monkey, manyatē realised, anyathā iti none other than, atha then, hanūmān Hanuman, priyadarśanām a lady pleasing to see, tām her,
uttarām later, uvāca spoke.

She realised that the monkey was none other than Hanuman. Then he looked at her who was pleasing to see and spoke again:
ētattē sarvamākhyātaṅ samāśvasihi maithili.

kiṅ karōmi kathaṅ vā tē rōcatē pratiyāmyaham৷৷5.35.88৷৷


maithili Mythili, tē to you, ētat sarvam everything, ākhyātam is narrated, samāśvasihi calm down, kim what, karōmi shall I do, tē to you, kathaṅ vā or how, rōcatē it pleases, aham I, pratiyāmi I will go back.

"Mythili, everything I intended to say has been narrated to you. Calm yourself down. What shall I do? Or else, tell me what pleases you. I shall go back.
hatē.surē saṅyati śambasādanē kapipravīrēṇa maharṣicōdanāt.

tatō.smi vāyuprabhavō hi maithili prabhāvatastatpratimaśca vānaraḥ৷৷5.35.89৷৷


maithili Maithili, saṅyati in a fight, śambasādanē Sambasadana, asurē when the demon, kapipravarēṇa mighty monkey, maharṣicōdanāt by the command of great sage, hatē sati where he was slain, atha then, vāyuprabhavaḥ by the spread of wind, prabhāvataḥ by his prowess, tatpratimaḥ equal to him, vānaraḥ vanara, asmi I am.

"(My father) a mighty monkey killed Sambasadana in a battle on the command of a great seer. I am a vanara (born to a monkey) by the impact of the Wind-god. I am equal to the Wind-god in power."
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē pañcatriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyfifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
