[Hanuman hands over the signet ring to Sita]

भूय एव महातेजा हनूमान्पवनात्मजः।

अब्रवीत्प्रश्रितं वाक्यं सीताप्रत्ययकारणात्।।5.36.1।।


महातेजाः mighty, पवनात्मजः son of the Windgod, हनुमान् Hanuman, सीताप्रत्ययकारणात् in order to inspire trust in Sita, भूय एव again this way, प्रश्रितम् humbly, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Mighty Hanuman, the son of the Windgod again spoke to Sita humbly to inspire confidence in her.
वानरोऽहं महाभागे दूतो रामस्य धीमतः।

रामनामाङ्कितं चेदं पश्य देव्यङ्गुलीयकम्।।5.36.2।।


महाभागे O noble lady, अहम् I am, धीमतः learned, रामस्य Rama's, दूतः envoy, वानरः vanara, देवि O godlike lady, रामनामाङ्कितम् which has the name of Rama inscribed, इदम् this, अङ्गुलीयकं च ring also, पश्य you see.

"O noble lady I am a vanara, an envoy of learned Rama. You see this ring with Rama's name inscribed on it, O godlike lady
प्रत्ययार्थं तवाऽनीतं तेन दत्तं महात्मना।

समाश्वसिहि भद्रं ते क्षीणदुःखफला ह्यसि।।5.36.3।।


महात्मना greatself, तेन by him, दत्तम् given, तव your, प्रत्ययार्थम् to make you trust, अनीतम् is brought, समाश्वसिहि be calm, ते to you, भद्रम् let you be auspicious, क्षीणदुःखफला your sorows ended, असि हि indeed.

"Be calm. Be blessed. Your sorrows have come to an end. This (the ring) is given by the great self, Rama, to make you trust me.
गृहीत्वा प्रेक्षमाणा सा भर्तुः करविभूषणम्।

भर्तारमिव सम्प्राप्ता जानकी मुदिताऽभवत्।।5.36.4।।


भर्तुः husband, करविभूषणम् ornament that adorned his hand, गृहीत्वा having received, प्रेक्षमाणा gazing, सा जानकी Janaki, भर्तारम् husband, सम्प्राप्ता इव as if reached, मुदिता delighted, अभवत् became.

She received the ornament that adorned her husband's hand and gazed at it and felt delighted as though her husband had arrived.
चारु तद्वदनं तस्यास्ताम्रशुक्लायतेक्षणम्।

अशोभत विशालाक्ष्या राहुमुक्त इवोडुराट्।।5.36.5।।


तस्यास्ताम्रशुक्लायतेक्षणम् her white eyes with reddish tinge at the corners of the eyes, चारु beautiful, तद्वदनं her countenance, विशालाक्ष्या largeeyed, राहुमुक्त released by Rahu, इवोडुराट् like the Moon अशोभत shone

Her beautiful countenance with large white eyes with a reddish tinge in the corners shone like the Moon released from Rahu.
ततस्सा ह्रीमती बाला भर्तृसन्देशहर्षिता।

परितुष्टा प्रियं कृत्वा प्रशशंस महाकपिम्।।5.36.6।।


ततः then, बाला young lady, सा that Sita, भर्तृसन्देशहर्षिता delighted at the news of her husband, ह्रीमती blushing lady, परितुष्टा felt happy, प्रियम् pleasing, कृत्वा action, महाकपिम् by the great monkey, प्रशशंस praised.

Young Sita felt delighted about her husband's news and blushed. By praising him for his action, she pleased the great monkey.
विक्रान्तस्त्वं समर्थस्त्वं प्राज्ञस्त्वं वानरोत्तम।

येनेदं राक्षसपदं त्वयैकेन प्रधर्षितम्।।5.36.7।।


वानरोत्तम O foremost among the vanaras, एकेन single handed, येन by which, त्वया by you, इदम् this, राक्षसपदम् demon's abode, प्रधर्षितम् assailed, त्वम् you, विक्रान्तः you are very brave, त्वम् you, समर्थः are able, त्वम् you, प्राज्ञः are wise.

"O foremost among the vanaras you have trespassed the abodes of demons all alone. You are mighty and capable and wise.
शतयोजनविस्तीर्ण स्सागरो मकरालयः।

विक्रमश्लाघनीयेन क्रमता गोष्पदीकृतः।।5.36.8।।


विक्रमश्लाघनीयेन by your admirable prowess, क्रमता advancing, शतयोजनविस्तीर्णः extended over a hundred yojanas, मकरालयः abode of crocodiles, सागरः ocean, गोष्पदीकृतः is reduced to calf's hoof mark.

"You with your admirable prowess have reduced this ocean which is an abode of crocodiles stretching over a hundred yojanas to a cow's hoof mark.
न हि त्वां प्राकृतं मन्ये वानरं वानरर्षभ।

यस्य ते नास्ति सन्त्रासो रावणान्नापि सम्भ्रमः।।5.36.9।।


वानरर्षभ O bull among vanaras, यस्य of whom, ते to you, रावणात् from Ravana, सन्त्रासः fear, नास्ति not there, सम्भ्रमः अपि even excitement, न not, त्वाम् for you, प्राकृतम् ordinary, वानरम् monkey, न मन्ये I do not think.

"I do not think you are an ordinary monkey. You have no fear or excitement about Ravana. You are a bull among vanaras.
अर्हसे च कपिश्रेष्ठ मया समभिभाषितुम्।

यद्यसि प्रेषितस्तेन रामेण विदितात्मना।।5.36.10।।


कपिश्रेष्ठ O best among monkeys, विदितात्मना by a knower of self, तेन by him, रामेण by Rama, प्रेषितः sent, असि यदि you are, मया by me, समभिभाषितुम् to converse, अर्हसे you deserve.

"O best of monkeys As you have been sent by Rama, the knower of the self, it is proper for me to converse with you.
प्रेषयिष्यति दुर्धर्षो रामो न ह्यपरीक्षितम्।

पराक्रममविज्ञाय मत्सकाशं विशेषतः।।5.36.11।।


दुर्धर्षः formidable, रामः Rama, पराक्रमम् valour, अविज्ञाय without knowing, अपरीक्षितम् without testing, न प्रेषयिष्यति हि would not send any body, विशेषतः specially, मत्सकाशम् to me.

"The formidable Rama will not send any one specially to me without testing him or knowing his valour.
दिष्ट्या च कुशली रामो धर्मात्मा सत्यसङ्गरः।

लक्ष्मणश्च महातेजास्सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः।।5.36.12।।
 

दिष्ट्या luckily, धर्मात्मा righteous, सत्यसङ्गरः one who follows truth, रामः Rama, महातेजाः glorious, सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः enhancer of Sumitra's joy, लक्ष्मणश्च Lakshmana also, कुशली well.

"To my luck, righteous Rama who abides in truth and glorious Lakshmana who enhances the joy of Sumitra are keeping well.
कुशली यदि काकुत्स्थः किं नु सागरमेखलाम्।

महीं दहति कोपेन युगान्ताग्निरिवोत्थितः।।5.36.13।।


काकुत्स्थः Kakutsthas, कुशली यदि if he is keeping well, उत्थितः generated, युगान्ताग्निरिव at the time of dissolution of the era, सागरमेखलाम् oceangirdled, महीम् earth, कोपेन with his rage, किम् why, न दहति not burning?

"Indeed if Kakutstha is well wherefore does he not burn the oceangirdled earth in his rage as (the earth is burnt) at the time of dissolution of the era?
अथवा शक्तिमन्तौ तौ सुराणामपि निग्रहे।

ममैव तु न दुःखानामस्ति मन्ये विपर्ययः।।5.36.14।।


अथवा or else, तौ both, सुराणामपि even gods, निग्रहे in subduing, शक्तिमन्तौ both are capable, तु but, मम my, दुःखानामेव for my sorrow, विपर्ययः disaster, नास्ति not there, मन्ये I think.

"Both of them are capable of subduing even the gods. I think the reversal of my fate is reason for their inaction.
कच्चिन्न व्यथितो रामः कच्चिन्न परितप्यते।

उत्तराणि च कार्याणि कुरुते पुरुषोत्तमः।।5.36.15।।


रामः Rama, न व्यथितः कच्चित् whether not depressed, न परितप्यते कच्चित् indeed not suffering, पुरुषोत्तमः great among men, उत्तराणि necessary steps, कार्याणि action, कुरुते will be carrying out perhaps?

"Is Rama the greatest among men not depressed? Does he not feel helpless? He is (perhaps) taking necessary steps (for my recovery).
कच्चिन्न दीन स्सम्भ्रान्तः कार्येषु न च मुह्यति।

कच्चित्पुरुषकार्याणि कुरुते नृपतेस्सुतः।।5.36.16।।


नृपतेः सुतः king's son, दीनः depressed, सम्भ्रान्तः perplexed, न कच्चित् not indeed, कार्येषु at work, न च मुह्यति is not spoiling, पुरुषकार्याणि the actions of men of achievement, कच्चित्
कुरुते surely he is doing I trust

"I suppose prince Rama is not too depressed or perplexed to attend to his work. He will (perhaps) be doing the duties expected of a manly person.
द्विविधं त्रिविधोपायमुपायमपि सेवते।

विजिगीषुस्सुहृत्कच्चिन्मित्रेषु च परन्तपः।।5.36.17।।
 

परन्तपः scorcher of enemies, द्विविधम् two kinds, उपायम् strategies, त्रिविधोपायमपि even three kinds of trategies, सेवते following, विजगीषुः he who desires to be victorious, मित्रेषु with friends, सुहृत् कच्चित् has a good team indeed

"Tell me if Rama, scorcher of enemies, desirous of victory is following a two-fold policy (confrontation and conciliation) A tough enemy cannot be defeated by following this method. A three-fold strategy has to be adopted in this case (confrontation, conciliation and creation of dissension among his foes) to be victorious. I hope he is well-disposed to his friends and has a good team!
कच्चिन्मित्राणि लभते मित्रैश्चाप्यभिगम्यते।

कच्चित्कल्याणमित्त्रश्च मित्रत्त्रैश्चापि पुरस्कृतः।।5.36.18।।


मित्राणि allies, कच्चित् लभते hope he will be making, मित्रैः with allies, अपि अभिगम्यते will want his friendship, कल्याणमित्रश्च कच्चित् hope he has good allies, मित्रैश्च by his allies, अपि पुरस्कृतः honoured

"I hope he is making new friends, who desire his friendship. Hopefully, Rama is well honoured by his allies.
कच्चिदाशास्ति देवानां प्रसादं पार्थिवात्मजः।

कच्चित्पुरुषकारं च दैवं च प्रतिपद्यते।।5.36.19।।


पार्थिवात्मजः prince, देवानाम् of gods, प्रसादम् blessings, आशास्ति कच्चित् is there any hope,
पुरुषकारं च his personal efforts, दैवं च providence, प्रतिपद्यते he obeys

"Does the prince ever seek the blessings of gods or fall back upon personal effort as well as providence?
कच्चिन्न विगतस्नेहः प्रवासान्मयि राघवः।

कच्चिन्मां व्यसनादस्मान्मोक्षयिष्यति वानर।।5.36.20।।


राघवः Rama, प्रवासात् due to separation, मयि in me विगतस्नेहः devoid of love, न कच्चित् suppose not, वानर vanara, माम् me, अस्मात् from this, व्यसनात् worry, मोक्षयिष्यति कच्चित् will liberate me from this

"I hope Rama is not devoid of love towards me by my separation. O Vanara, hope he will liberate me from this misery.
सुखानामुचितो नित्यमसुखानामनौचितः।

दुःखमुत्तरमासाद्य कच्चिद्रामो न सीदति।।5.36.21।।


नित्यम् always, सुखानाम् delight, उचितः one who deserves, असुखानाम् of difficulties, अनौचितः he does not deserve, राघवः Rama, उत्तरम् later, दुःखम् sorrow, आसाद्य having experienced, न सीदति कच्चित् hope he is not depressed

"I hope Rama who deserves happiness and not suffering has not become depressed now , having experienced a spate of sorrows.
कौसल्यायास्तथा कच्चित्सुमित्रायास्तथैव च।

अभीक्ष्णं श्रूयते कच्चित्कुशलं भरतस्य च।।5.36.22।।


कौसल्यायाः Kausalya's, तथा in the same manner, सुमित्रायाः Sumitra's, तथैव च in the same way, भरतस्य Bharata's, कुशलम् welfare, अभीक्ष्णम् constantly, श्रूयते कच्चित् hope he is hearing

"I hope he regularly receives news about the welfare of Kausalya, Sumitra and Bharata.
मन्निमित्तेन मानार्हः कच्चिच्छोकेन राघवः।

कच्चिन्नान्यमना रामः कच्चिन्मां तारयिष्यति।।5.36.23।।


मानार्हः respectable, राघवः Rama, मन्निमित्तेन on my account, शोकेन because of sorrow, कच्चित् I hope, रामः Rama, नअन्यमनाः he is not absent minded, न कच्चित् may be, माम् me, कच्चित् तारयिष्यति will he save me?

"I hope respectable Rama is not too absentminded for being immersed in sorrow on my account. Hope he will save me.
कच्चिदक्षौहिणीं भीमां भरतो भ्रातृवत्सलः।

ध्वजिनीं मन्त्रिभिर्गुप्तां प्रेषयिष्यति मत्कृते।।5.36.24।।


भ्रातृवत्सलः devoted to brother, भरतः Bharata, मत्कृते for my sake, मन्त्रिभिः with his ministers, गुप्ताम् protected, भीमाम् formidable, अक्षौहिणीम् ध्वजिनीम् akshauhini army, कच्चित् प्रेषयिष्यति I trust he will send

"Will Bharata, the devoted brother, send his formidable army of one akshavhini protected by ministers for my cause? I trust he will. (Akshauhini 109350 foot soldiers 65610 horse soldiers 21860 elephants soldiers on chariot)
वानराधिपतिश्शीमान्सुग्रीवः कच्चिदेष्यति।

मत्कृते हरिभिर्वीरैर्वृतो दन्तनखायुधैः।।5.36.25।।


मत्कृते for my sake, श्रीमान् illustrious, वानराधिपतिः king of vanaras, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, दन्तनखायुधै: those who use their teeth and nails as weapons, वीरैः with valiant ones, हरिभिः with vanaras, वृतः surrounded, एष्वति कच्चित् trust he will reach.

"I trust that the illustrious Sugriva surrounded by valiant vanaras who use their teeth and nails as weapons will reach this place.
कच्चिच्छ लक्ष्मणश्शूरस्सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः।

अस्त्रविच्छरजालेन राक्षसान्विधमिष्यति।।5.36.26।।


शूरः hero, सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः who enhances Sumitra's delight, अस्त्रवित् a master of weapons, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, शरजालेन by network of arrows, राक्षसान् demons, कच्चित् विधमिष्यति trust he will blow away.

"Hope heroic Lakshmana, enhancer of the joy of Sumitra, who has mastered the use of weapons will blow away the demons through a network of arrows.
रौद्रेण कच्चिदस्त्रेण ज्वलता निहतं रणे।

द्रक्ष्याम्यल्पेन कालेन रावणं ससुहृज्जनम्।।5.36.27।।


ज्वलता burning, रौद्रेण with anger, अस्त्रेण by weapon, रणे in the battle, ससुहृज्जनम् along with his relatives, निहतम् slain, रावणम् Ravana, अल्पेन कालेन in a short time, द्रक्ष्यामि कच्चित् hope to see.

"Can I hope to see Ravana and his relatives slain in the battle by fiery weapons in a short time?
कच्चिन्न तद्धेमसमानवर्णं तस्याननं पद्मसमानगन्धि।

मया विना शुष्यति शोकदीनं जलक्षये पद्ममिवातपेन।।5.36.28।।


तस्य his, हेमसमानवर्णम् complexion like gold, पद्मसमानगन्धि fragrance like lotus, तत् that, आननम् face, मया विना without me, शोकदीनम् pale with grief, जलक्षये when water dries up, आतपेन due to heat, पद्ममिव like a lotus, न शुष्यति कच्चित् not scorched

"Hope, Rama's moonlike face without me with its golden complexion and lotus fragrance must not have been pale and withered with tears like the lotus in a pond scorched by the heat.
धर्मापदेशात्त्यजतश्च राज्यं मां चाप्यरण्यं नयतः पदातिम्।

नासीद्व्यथा यस्य न भीर्न शोकः कच्चित्स धैर्यं हृदये करोति।।5.36.29।।


धर्मापदेशात् for the cause of establishing righteousness, राज्यम् sovereignty, त्यजतः given up, मां चापि including me, पदातिम् on foot, अरण्यम् to the forest, नयतः conducted, यस्य whose, व्यथा agony, नासीत् not shown, भीः fear, न not, शोकः grief, न not, सः he, हृदये at heart, धैर्यम् courage, करोति कच्चित् will sustain I hope.

"Rama has given up sovereignty for the sake of establishing righteousness and led me into the forest on foot.He had not then felt any fear, anxiety or grief at heart.Rama showed patience, instead. Hope he retains them.
न चास्य माता न पिता च नान्यः स्नेहाद्विशिष्टोऽस्ति मया समो वा।

तावत्त्वहं दूत जिजीविषेयं यावत्प्रवृत्तिं शृणुयां प्रियस्य।।5.36.30।।


अस्य his, स्नेहात् due to love, मया with me, समो वा equal or, विशिष्टः superior, माता mother, न not, पिता father, न not, अन्यः any one else, नास्ति not there, दूत messenger, प्रियस्य beloved's, प्रवृत्तिम् news, यावत् until, शृणुयाम् I may hear, तावत्तु so long, अहम् I, जिजीविषेयम् I wish to survive.

"His love for me is superior to his love for his father, mother or any one else. O messenger, I wish to survive till I hear any news from my dear lord."
इतीव देवी वचनं महार्थं तं वानरेन्द्रं मधुरार्थमुक्त्वा।

श्रोतुं पुनस्तस्य वचोऽभिरामं रामार्थयुक्तं विरराम रामा।।5.36.31।।


देवी queen, तं वानरेन्द्रम् that vanara leader, महार्थम् very meaningful, मधुरार्थम् sweet, वचनम् word, उक्त्वा having spoken, तस्य his, अभिरामम् loving Rama, रामार्थयुक्तम् said for Rama's cause, वचः word, पुनः again, श्रोतुम् to hear, विरराम stopped.

The godlike lady, having spoken to the vanara leader in a very meaningful and sweet manner about her beloved Rama, she remained silent, waiting to hear Hanuman's
attractive words of description of Rama once again.
सीताया वचनं श्रुत्वा मारुतिर्भीमविक्रमः।

शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधाय वाक्यमुत्तरमब्रवीत्।।5.36.32।।


भीमविक्रमः fearsome power, मारुतिः Maruti, सीतायाः Sita's, वचनम् word, श्रुत्वा on hearing, शिरसि on his head, अञ्जलिम् both his hands, आधाय placing, उत्तरम् reply, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् said.

Having heard Sita, Hanuman endowed with fearsome power placed his folded hands on his head and said this:
न त्वामिहस्थां जानीते रामः कमललोचने।

तेन त्वां नानयत्याशु शचीमिव पुरन्दरः।।5.36.33।।


कमललोचने lotuseyed, त्वाम् you, इहस्थाम् being here, रामः Rama, न जानीते he does not know, तेन therefore, पुरन्दरः Indra, शचीमिव like Sachi, त्वाम् you, आशु immediately, नानयति he is not taking away.

"O lotuseyed one Rama knows not that you are here. Therefore he has not taken you away immediately as did Indra to rescue his wife Sachi.
श्रुत्वैव तु वचो मह्यं क्षिप्रमेष्यति राघवः।

चमूं प्रकर्षन्महतीं हर्यृक्षगणसङ्कुलाम्।।5.36.34।।
 

मह्यं my, वचः word, श्रुत्वैव तु after hearing, राघवः Rama, हर्यृक्षगणसङ्कुलाम् troops of vanaras and bears, महतीम् huge, चमूम् army, प्रकर्षन् leading, क्षिप्रम् at once, एष्यति will approach.

"As soon as he hears your words from me, Rama will reach (here), leading a huge army of powerful troops of vanaras and bears.
विष्टम्भयित्वा बाणौघैरक्षोभ्यं वरुणालयम्।

करिष्यति पुरीं लङ्कां काकुत्स्थः शान्तराक्षसाम्।।5.36.35।।


काकुत्स्थः Kakutstha, अक्षोभ्यम् imperturbable, वरुणालयम् abode of Varuna, बाणौघैः by torrent of arrows, विष्टम्भयित्वा make still, लङ्कां पुरीम् city of Lanka, शान्तराक्षसाम् all the demons, करिष्यति will make.

"Kakutstha Rama will still the imperturbable abode of Varuna (ocean) by the torrent of his arrows and rid the city of Lanka of all the demons.
तत्र यद्यन्तरा मृत्युर्यदि देवास्सहासुराः।

स्थास्यन्ति पथि रामस्य स तानपि वधिष्यति।।5.36.36।।


तत्र there, रामस्य Rama's, पथि on his way, अन्तरा in between, मृत्युः death, सहासुराः including all demons, देवाः gods, स्थास्यन्ति यदि if they obstruct, सः he, तानपि even them, वधिष्यति will slay.

"Thereafter, whoever comes Rama's way, be it gods or demons or even death or any one else he will destroy them.
तवादर्शनजेनार्ये शोकेन स परिप्लुतः।

न शर्म लभते रामस्सिंहार्दित इव द्विपः।।5.36.37।।


आर्ये O noble lady, सः रामः that Rama, तव your, अदर्शनजेन on account of not seeing you, शोकेन in sorrow, परिप्लुतः immersed, सिंहार्दितः tormented by a lion, द्विपः इव like an elephant, शर्म न लभते is not happy.

"O noble lady not being able to see you, Rama is immersed in an ocean of sorrow, he has no solace like an elephant tormented by a lion.
मलयेन च विन्ध्येन मेरुणा मन्दरेण च।

दर्दुरेण च ते देवि शपे मूलफलेन च।।5.36.38।।

यथा सुनयनं वल्गु बिम्बोष्ठं चारु कुण्डलम् ।

मुखं द्रक्ष्यसि रामस्य पूर्णचन्द्रमिवोदितम्।।5.36.39।।


देवि O Sita, मलयेन च by Malaya mountain, विन्ध्येन by Vindhya, मेरुणा by Meru, दर्दुरेण by Dardura, मूलफलेन by roots and fruits, ते to you, शपे I swear, यथा as, सुनयनम् with beautiful eyes, वल्गु बिम्बोष्ठम् lips like bimba fruit, चारु कुण्डलम् with lovely earrings, उदितम् risen, पूर्णचन्द्रमिव like the fullmoon, रामस्य Rama's, मुखम् face, द्रक्ष्यसि you will see.

"O Sita I swear in the name of mountains like Malaya, Vindhya, Meru, and Dardura (the abodes of monkeys and bears) and by the roots and fruits as well (which are the food of vanaras). you will soon behold Rama with beautiful eyes, red lips like bimba fruit, lovely earrings and a countenance resembling the full moon.
क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि वैदेहि रामं प्रस्रवणे गिरौ।

शतक्रतुमिवासीनं नागराजस्य मूर्धनि।।5.36.40।।


वैदेहि Vaidehi, प्रस्रवणे गिरौ on mount Prasravana, रामम् Rama, नागराजस्य elephant's, मूर्धनि on the back, आसीनम् seated, शतक्रतुम् इव like Indra who has performed a hundred sacrifices, क्षिप्रम् soon, द्रक्ष्यसि you will see.

"O Vaidehi, you will soon see Rama seated on the Prasravana mountain just as Indra (who performed a hundred sacrifices) seated on the back of the king of elephants.
न मांसं राघवो भुङक्ते न चाऽपि मधु सेवते।

वन्यं सुविहितं नित्यं भक्तमश्नाति पञ्चमम्।।5.36.41।।


राघवः Rama, मांसम् meat, न भुङक्ते not eating, मधुचापि even wine, न सेवते he is not taking, नित्यम् always, पञ्चमम् fifth meal, सुविहितम् prescribed for, वन्यम् available in the forest, भुक्तम् food, अश्नाति eats.

"Rama is not eating meat, nor drinking wine. He takes only the one fifth of a meal
(sanctioned for an ascetic) available in the forest.
नैव दंशान्न मशकान्न कीटान्न सरीसृपान्।

राघवोऽपनयेद्गात्रात्त्वद्गतेनान्तरात्मना।।5.36.42।।


राघवः Rama, त्वद्गतेन thinking of you, अन्तरात्मना with heart, गात्रात् from his limbs, दंशान् flies, नैव अपनयेत् will not drive away, मशकान् mosquitoes, न not, कीटान् insects, न not, सरीसृपान् serpents, न not.

"Since you left, Rama has been always thinking sincerely of you, no longer drives away flies or mosquitoes nor insects or serpents from his body (his mind entirely fixed on you).
नित्यं ध्यानपरो रामो नित्यं शोकपरायणः।

नान्यच्चिन्तयते किञ्चित्स तु कामवशं गतः।।5.36.43।।


रामः Rama, नित्यम् ever, ध्यानपरः reflecting on you, नित्यम् ever, शोकपरायणः totally given to grief, सः he, कामवशं गतः absorbed in love for you, अन्यत् no other thoughts, न चिन्तयते he is not thinking.

"Rama is always lost in thought. He is totally given to grief. Absorbed in love for you, he thinks of none else৷৷
अनिद्रस्सततं रामस्सुप्तोऽपि च नरोत्तमः।

सीतेति मधुरां वाणीं व्याहरन्प्रतिबुध्यते।।5.36.44।।


रामः Rama, सततम् always, अनिद्रः he does not sleep, नरोत्तमः best of men, सुप्तोऽपि even if he sleeps, सीतेति calling out 'Sita', मधुराम् sweet, वाणीम् voice, व्याहरन् uttering, प्रतिबुध्यते he wakes up.

"Rama, the best of men never goes to sleep and even if he drops off to sleep he mutters 'Sita, Sita' in a sweet voice in his sleep.
दृष्ट्वा फलं वा पुष्पं वा यद्वाऽन्यत्सुमनोहरम्।

बहुशो हा प्रियेत्येवं श्वसंस्त्वामभिभाषते।।5.36.45।।


फलं वा fruit or, पुष्पं वा or flowers, यद्वा such similar, सुमनोहरम् delightful, अन्यत् any other thing, दृष्ट्वा seeing, श्वसन् while, हा प्रियेत्येवम् alas, darling, त्वाम् you, बहुशः in many, अभिभाषते speaks.

"Sighing deeply whenever Rama sees a fruit or a flower or any such delightful thing, he remembers you and calls you out again and again, saying, 'alas, my darling '
स देवि नित्यं परितप्यमान स्त्वामेव सीतेत्यभिभाषमाणः।

धृतव्रतो राजसुतो महात्मा तवैव लाभाय कृतप्रयत्नः।।5.36.46।।


देवि godlike lady, महात्मा great self, सः Rama, राजसुतः son of a king, नित्यम् always, परितप्यमानः suffering, सीतेति saying Sita, त्वामेव you only, अभिभाषमाणः keeps talking in the air, धृतव्रतः firm in his decision, तव your, लाभाय to secure you only, कृतप्रयत्नः makes efforts.

"O divine lady prince Rama is ceaselessly suffering. He keeps talking to you in air. The determined Rama is only thinking of your recovery ".
सा रामसङ्कीर्तनवीतशोका रामस्य शोकेन समानशोका।

शरन्मुखे साम्बुदशेषचन्द्रा निशेव वैदेहसुता बभूव।।5.36.47।।


रामस्य Rama's, शोकेन because of his sorrow, समानशोका equally sad, रामसङ्कीर्तनवीतशोका devoid of sorrow on hearing about Rama, सा she, वैदेहसुता the daughter of Videha, शरन्मुखे at the advent of autumn, साम्बुदशेषचन्द्रा Moon muffled by clouds, निशेव like the night, बभूव appeared.

Her sorrow was mitigated by references made by Hanuman about Rama.She felt equally sad when she heard about Rama's agony. The princess from Videha appeared like a night at the advent of autumn, with the Moon looking partly muffled by clouds and partly bright.
