[Hanuman hands over the signet ring to Sita]

bhūya ēva mahātējā hanūmānpavanātmajaḥ.

abravītpraśritaṅ vākyaṅ sītāpratyayakāraṇāt৷৷5.36.1৷৷


mahātējāḥ mighty, pavanātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, sītāpratyayakāraṇāt in order to inspire trust in Sita, bhūya ēva again this way, praśritam humbly, vākyam these words, abravīt said.

Mighty Hanuman, the son of the Wind-god again spoke to Sita humbly to inspire confidence in her.
vānarō.haṅ mahābhāgē dūtō rāmasya dhīmataḥ.

rāmanāmāṅkitaṅ cēdaṅ paśya dēvyaṅgulīyakam৷৷5.36.2৷৷


mahābhāgē O noble lady!, aham I am, dhīmataḥ learned, rāmasya Rama's, dūtaḥ envoy, vānaraḥ vanara, dēvi O god-like lady, rāmanāmāṅkitam which has the name of Rama inscribed, idam this, aṅgulīyakaṅ ca ring also, paśya you see.

"O noble lady! I am a vanara, an envoy of learned Rama. You see this ring with Rama's name inscribed on it, O god-like lady !
pratyayārthaṅ tavā.nītaṅ tēna dattaṅ mahātmanā.

samāśvasihi bhadraṅ tē kṣīṇaduḥkhaphalā hyasi৷৷5.36.3৷৷


mahātmanā great-self, tēna by him, dattam given, tava your, pratyayārtham to make you trust, anītam is brought, samāśvasihi be calm, tē to you, bhadram let you be auspicious, kṣīṇaduḥkhaphalā your sorows ended, asi hi indeed.

"Be calm. Be blessed. Your sorrows have come to an end. This (the ring) is given by the great self, Rama, to make you trust me.
gṛhītvā prēkṣamāṇā sā bhartuḥ karavibhūṣaṇam.

bhartāramiva samprāptā jānakī muditā.bhavat৷৷5.36.4৷৷


bhartuḥ husband, karavibhūṣaṇam ornament that adorned his hand, gṛhītvā having received, prēkṣamāṇā gazing, sā jānakī Janaki, bhartāram husband, samprāptā iva as if reached, muditā delighted, abhavat became.

She received the ornament that adorned her husband's hand and gazed at it and felt delighted as though her husband had arrived.
cāru tadvadanaṅ tasyāstāmraśuklāyatēkṣaṇam.

aśōbhata viśālākṣyā rāhumukta ivōḍurāṭ৷৷5.36.5৷৷


tasyāstāmraśuklāyatēkṣaṇam her white eyes with reddish tinge at the corners of the eyes, cāru beautiful, tadvadanaṅ her countenance, viśālākṣyā large-eyed, rāhumukta released by Rahu, ivōḍurāṭ like the Moon aśōbhata shone

Her beautiful countenance with large white eyes with a reddish tinge in the corners shone like the Moon released from Rahu.
tatassā hrīmatī bālā bhartṛsandēśaharṣitā.

parituṣṭā priyaṅ kṛtvā praśaśaṅsa mahākapim৷৷5.36.6৷৷


tataḥ then, bālā young lady, sā that Sita, bhartṛsandēśaharṣitā delighted at the news of her husband, hrīmatī blushing lady, parituṣṭā felt happy, priyam pleasing, kṛtvā action, mahākapim by the great monkey, praśaśaṅsa praised.

Young Sita felt delighted about her husband's news and blushed. By praising him for his action, she pleased the great monkey.
vikrāntastvaṅ samarthastvaṅ prājñastvaṅ vānarōttama.

yēnēdaṅ rākṣasapadaṅ tvayaikēna pradharṣitam৷৷5.36.7৷৷


vānarōttama O foremost among the vanaras, ēkēna single handed, yēna by which, tvayā by you, idam this, rākṣasapadam demon's abode, pradharṣitam assailed, tvam you, vikrāntaḥ you are very brave, tvam you, samarthaḥ are able, tvam you, prājñaḥ are wise.

"O foremost among the vanaras! you have trespassed the abodes of demons all alone. You are mighty and capable and wise.
śatayōjanavistīrṇa ssāgarō makarālayaḥ.

vikramaślāghanīyēna kramatā gōṣpadīkṛtaḥ৷৷5.36.8৷৷


vikramaślāghanīyēna by your admirable prowess, kramatā advancing, śatayōjanavistīrṇaḥ extended over a hundred yojanas, makarālayaḥ abode of crocodiles, sāgaraḥ ocean, gōṣpadīkṛtaḥ is reduced to calf's hoof mark.

"You with your admirable prowess have reduced this ocean which is an abode of crocodiles stretching over a hundred yojanas to a cow's hoof mark.
na hi tvāṅ prākṛtaṅ manyē vānaraṅ vānararṣabha.

yasya tē nāsti santrāsō rāvaṇānnāpi sambhramaḥ৷৷5.36.9৷৷


vānararṣabha O bull among vanaras, yasya of whom, tē to you, rāvaṇāt from Ravana, santrāsaḥ fear, nāsti not there, sambhramaḥ api even excitement, na not, tvām for you, prākṛtam ordinary, vānaram monkey, na manyē I do not think.

"I do not think you are an ordinary monkey. You have no fear or excitement about Ravana. You are a bull among vanaras.
arhasē ca kapiśrēṣṭha mayā samabhibhāṣitum.

yadyasi prēṣitastēna rāmēṇa viditātmanā৷৷5.36.10৷৷


kapiśrēṣṭha O best among monkeys, viditātmanā by a knower of self, tēna by him, rāmēṇa by Rama, prēṣitaḥ sent, asi yadi you are, mayā by me, samabhibhāṣitum to converse, arhasē you deserve.

"O best of monkeys! As you have been sent by Rama, the knower of the self, it is proper for me to converse with you.
prēṣayiṣyati durdharṣō rāmō na hyaparīkṣitam.

parākramamavijñāya matsakāśaṅ viśēṣataḥ৷৷5.36.11৷৷


durdharṣaḥ formidable, rāmaḥ Rama, parākramam valour, avijñāya without knowing, aparīkṣitam without testing, na prēṣayiṣyati hi would not send any body, viśēṣataḥ specially, matsakāśam to me.

"The formidable Rama will not send any one specially to me without testing him or knowing his valour.
diṣṭyā ca kuśalī rāmō dharmātmā satyasaṅgaraḥ.

lakṣmaṇaśca mahātējāssumitrānandavardhanaḥ৷৷5.36.12৷৷


diṣṭyā luckily, dharmātmā righteous, satyasaṅgaraḥ one who follows truth, rāmaḥ Rama, mahātējāḥ glorious, sumitrānandavardhanaḥ enhancer of Sumitra's joy, lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana also, kuśalī well.

"To my luck, righteous Rama who abides in truth and glorious Lakshmana who enhances the joy of Sumitra are keepng well.
kuśalī yadi kākutsthaḥ kiṅ nu sāgaramēkhalām.

mahīṅ dahati kōpēna yugāntāgnirivōtthitaḥ৷৷5.36.13৷৷


kākutsthaḥ Kakutsthas, kuśalī yadi if he is keeping well, utthitaḥ generated, yugāntāgniriva at the time of dissolution of the era, sāgaramēkhalām ocean-girdled, mahīm earth, kōpēna with his rage, kim why, na dahati not burning?

"Indeed if Kakutstha is well wherefore does he not burn the ocean-girdled earth in his rage as (the earth is burnt) at the time of dissolution of the era?
athavā śaktimantau tau surāṇāmapi nigrahē.

mamaiva tu na duḥkhānāmasti manyē viparyayaḥ৷৷5.36.14৷৷


athavā or else, tau both, surāṇāmapi even gods, nigrahē in subduing, śaktimantau both are capable, tu but, mama my, duḥkhānāmēva for my sorrow, viparyayaḥ disaster, nāsti not there, manyē I think.

"Both of them are capable of subduing even the gods. I think the reversal of my fate is reason for their inaction.
kaccinna vyathitō rāmaḥ kaccinna paritapyatē.

uttarāṇi ca kāryāṇi kurutē puruṣōttamaḥ৷৷5.36.15৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, na vyathitaḥ kaccit whether not depressed, na paritapyatē kaccit indeed not suffering, puruṣōttamaḥ great among men, uttarāṇi necessary steps, kāryāṇi action, kurutē will be carrying out perhaps?

"Is Rama the greatest among men not depressed? Does he not feel helpless? He is (perhaps) taking necessary steps (for my recovery).
kaccinna dīna ssambhrāntaḥ kāryēṣu na ca muhyati.

kaccitpuruṣakāryāṇi kurutē nṛpatēssutaḥ৷৷5.36.16৷৷


nṛpatēḥ sutaḥ king's son, dīnaḥ depressed, sambhrāntaḥ perplexed, na kaccit not indeed, kāryēṣu at work, na ca muhyati is not spoiling, puruṣakāryāṇi the actions of men of achievement, kaccit
kurutē surely he is doing I trust

"I suppose prince Rama is not too depressed or perplexed to attend to his work. He will (perhaps) be doing the duties expected of a manly person.
dvividhaṅ trividhōpāyamupāyamapi sēvatē.

vijigīṣussuhṛtkaccinmitrēṣu ca parantapaḥ৷৷5.36.17৷৷


parantapaḥ scorcher of enemies, dvividham two kinds, upāyam strategies, trividhōpāyamapi even three kinds of trategies, sēvatē following, vijagīṣuḥ he who desires to be victorious, mitrēṣu with friends, suhṛt kaccit has a good team indeed

"Tell me if Rama, scorcher of enemies, desirous of victory is following a two-fold policy (confrontation and conciliation) A tough enemy cannot be defeated by following this method. A three-fold strategy has to be adopted in this case (confrontation, conciliation and creation of dissension among his foes) to be victorious. I hope he is well-disposed to his friends and has a good team!
kaccinmitrāṇi labhatē mitraiścāpyabhigamyatē.

kaccitkalyāṇamittraśca mitrattraiścāpi puraskṛtaḥ৷৷5.36.18৷৷


mitrāṇi allies, kaccit labhatē hope he will be making, mitraiḥ with allies, api abhigamyatē will want his friendship, kalyāṇamitraśca kaccit hope he has good allies, mitraiśca by his allies, api puraskṛtaḥ honoured

"I hope he is making new friends, who desire his friendship. Hopefully, Rama is well- honoured by his allies.
kaccidāśāsti dēvānāṅ prasādaṅ pārthivātmajaḥ.

kaccitpuruṣakāraṅ ca daivaṅ ca pratipadyatē৷৷5.36.19৷৷


pārthivātmajaḥ prince, dēvānām of gods, prasādam blessings, āśāsti kaccit is there any hope,
puruṣakāraṅ ca his personal efforts, daivaṅ ca providence, pratipadyatē he obeys

"Does the prince ever seek the blessings of gods or fall back upon personal effort as well as providence?
kaccinna vigatasnēhaḥ pravāsānmayi rāghavaḥ.

kaccinmāṅ vyasanādasmānmōkṣayiṣyati vānara৷৷5.36.20৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, pravāsāt due to separation, mayi in me vigatasnēhaḥ devoid of love, na kaccit suppose not, vānara vanara, mām me, asmāt from this, vyasanāt worry, mōkṣayiṣyati kaccit will liberate me from this

"I hope Rama is not devoid of love towards me by my separation. O Vanara, hope he will liberate me from this misery.
sukhānāmucitō nityamasukhānāmanaucitaḥ.

duḥkhamuttaramāsādya kaccidrāmō na sīdati৷৷5.36.21৷৷


nityam always, sukhānām delight, ucitaḥ one who deserves, asukhānām of difficulties, anaucitaḥ he does not deserve, rāghavaḥ Rama, uttaram later, duḥkham sorrow, āsādya having experienced, na sīdati kaccit hope he is not depressed

"I hope Rama who deserves happiness and not suffering has not become depressed now , having experienced a spate of sorrows.
kausalyāyāstathā kaccitsumitrāyāstathaiva ca.

abhīkṣṇaṅ śrūyatē kaccitkuśalaṅ bharatasya ca৷৷5.36.22৷৷


kausalyāyāḥ Kausalya's, tathā in the same manner, sumitrāyāḥ Sumitra's, tathaiva ca in the same way, bharatasya Bharata's, kuśalam welfare, abhīkṣṇam constantly, śrūyatē kaccit hope he is hearing

"I hope he regularly receives news about the welfare of Kausalya, Sumitra and Bharata.
mannimittēna mānārhaḥ kaccicchōkēna rāghavaḥ.

kaccinnānyamanā rāmaḥ kaccinmāṅ tārayiṣyati৷৷5.36.23৷৷


mānārhaḥ respectable, rāghavaḥ Rama, mannimittēna on my account, śōkēna because of sorrow, kaccit I hope, rāmaḥ Rama, naanyamanāḥ he is not absent -minded, na kaccit may be, mām me, kaccit tārayiṣyati will he save me?

"I hope respectable Rama is not too absent-minded for being immersed in sorrow on my account. Hope he will save me.
kaccidakṣauhiṇīṅ bhīmāṅ bharatō bhrātṛvatsalaḥ.

dhvajinīṅ mantribhirguptāṅ prēṣayiṣyati matkṛtē৷৷5.36.24৷৷


bhrātṛvatsalaḥ devoted to brother, bharataḥ Bharata, matkṛtē for my sake, mantribhiḥ with his ministers, guptām protected, bhīmām formidable, akṣauhiṇīm dhvajinīm akshauhini army, kaccit prēṣayiṣyati I trust he will send

"Will Bharata, the devoted brother, send his formidable army of one akshavhini protected by ministers for my cause? I trust he will. (Akshauhini = 109350 foot soldiers + 65610 horse soldiers + 21860 elephants soldiers on chariot)
vānarādhipatiśśīmānsugrīvaḥ kaccidēṣyati.

matkṛtē haribhirvīrairvṛtō dantanakhāyudhaiḥ৷৷5.36.25৷৷


matkṛtē for my sake, śrīmān illustrious, vānarādhipatiḥ king of vanaras, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, dantanakhāyudhai: those who use their teeth and nails as weapons, vīraiḥ with valiant ones, haribhiḥ with vanaras, vṛtaḥ surrounded, ēṣvati kaccit trust he will reach.

"I trust that the illustrious Sugriva surrounded by valiant vanaras who use their teeth and nails as weapons will reach this place.
kacciccha lakṣmaṇaśśūrassumitrānandavardhanaḥ.

astraviccharajālēna rākṣasānvidhamiṣyati৷৷5.36.26৷৷


śūraḥ hero, sumitrānandavardhanaḥ who enhances Sumitra's delight, astravit a master of weapons, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, śarajālēna by network of arrows, rākṣasān demons, kaccit vidhamiṣyati trust he will blow away.

"Hope heroic Lakshmana, enhancer of the joy of Sumitra, who has mastered the use of weapons will blow away the demons through a network of arrows.
raudrēṇa kaccidastrēṇa jvalatā nihataṅ raṇē.

drakṣyāmyalpēna kālēna rāvaṇaṅ sasuhṛjjanam৷৷5.36.27৷৷


jvalatā burning, raudrēṇa with anger, astrēṇa by weapon, raṇē in the battle, sasuhṛjjanam along with his relatives, nihatam slain, rāvaṇam Ravana, alpēna kālēna in a short time, drakṣyāmi kaccit hope to see.

"Can I hope to see Ravana and his relatives slain in the battle by fiery weapons in a short time?
kaccinna taddhēmasamānavarṇaṅ tasyānanaṅ padmasamānagandhi.

mayā vinā śuṣyati śōkadīnaṅ jalakṣayē padmamivātapēna৷৷5.36.28৷৷


tasya his, hēmasamānavarṇam complexion like gold, padmasamānagandhi fragrance like lotus, tat that, ānanam face, mayā vinā without me, śōkadīnam pale with grief, jalakṣayē when water dries up, ātapēna due to heat, padmamiva like a lotus, na śuṣyati kaccit not scorched

"Hope, Rama's moon-like face without me with its golden complexion and lotus fragrance must not have been pale and withered with tears like the lotus in a pond scorched by the heat.
dharmāpadēśāttyajataśca rājyaṅ māṅ cāpyaraṇyaṅ nayataḥ padātim.

nāsīdvyathā yasya na bhīrna śōkaḥ kaccitsa dhairyaṅ hṛdayē karōti৷৷5.36.29৷৷


dharmāpadēśāt for the cause of establishing righteousness, rājyam sovereignty, tyajataḥ given up, māṅ cāpi including me, padātim on foot, araṇyam to the forest, nayataḥ conducted, yasya whose, vyathā agony, nāsīt not shown, bhīḥ fear, na not, śōkaḥ grief, na not, saḥ he, hṛdayē at heart, dhairyam courage, karōti kaccit will sustain I hope.

"Rama has given up sovereignty for the sake of establishing righteousness and led me into the forest on foot.He had not then felt any fear, anxiety or grief at heart.Rama showed patience, instead. Hope he retains them.
na cāsya mātā na pitā ca nānyaḥ snēhādviśiṣṭō.sti mayā samō vā.

tāvattvahaṅ dūta jijīviṣēyaṅ yāvatpravṛttiṅ śṛṇuyāṅ priyasya৷৷5.36.30৷৷


asya his, snēhāt due to love, mayā with me, samō vā equal or, viśiṣṭaḥ superior, mātā mother, na not, pitā father, na not, anyaḥ any one else, nāsti not there, dūta messenger, priyasya beloved's, pravṛttim news, yāvat until, śṛṇuyām I may hear, tāvattu so long, aham I, jijīviṣēyam I wish to survive.

"His love for me is superior to his love for his father, mother or any one else. O messenger, I wish to survive till I hear any news from my dear lord."
itīva dēvī vacanaṅ mahārthaṅ taṅ vānarēndraṅ madhurārthamuktvā.

śrōtuṅ punastasya vacō.bhirāmaṅ rāmārthayuktaṅ virarāma rāmā৷৷5.36.31৷৷


dēvī queen, taṅ vānarēndram that vanara leader, mahārtham very meaningful, madhurārtham sweet, vacanam word, uktvā having spoken, tasya his, abhirāmam loving Rama, rāmārthayuktam said for Rama's cause, vacaḥ word, punaḥ again, śrōtum to hear, virarāma stopped.

The god-like lady, having spoken to the vanara leader in a very meaningful and sweet manner about her beloved Rama, she remained silent, waiting to hear Hanuman's
attractive words of description of Rama once again.
sītāyā vacanaṅ śrutvā mārutirbhīmavikramaḥ.

śirasyañjalimādhāya vākyamuttaramabravīt৷৷5.36.32৷৷


bhīmavikramaḥ fearsome power, mārutiḥ Maruti, sītāyāḥ Sita's, vacanam word, śrutvā on hearing, śirasi on his head, añjalim both his hands, ādhāya placing, uttaram reply, vākyam words, abravīt said.

Having heard Sita, Hanuman endowed with fearsome power placed his folded hands on his head and said this:
na tvāmihasthāṅ jānītē rāmaḥ kamalalōcanē.

tēna tvāṅ nānayatyāśu śacīmiva purandaraḥ৷৷5.36.33৷৷


kamalalōcanē lotus-eyed, tvām you, ihasthām being here, rāmaḥ Rama, na jānītē he does not know, tēna therefore, purandaraḥ Indra, śacīmiva like Sachi, tvām you, āśu immediately, nānayati he is not taking away.

"O lotus-eyed one! Rama knows not that you are here. Therefore he has not taken you away immediately as did Indra to rescue his wife Sachi.
śrutvaiva tu vacō mahyaṅ kṣipramēṣyati rāghavaḥ.

camūṅ prakarṣanmahatīṅ haryṛkṣagaṇasaṅkulām৷৷5.36.34৷৷


mahyaṅ my, vacaḥ word, śrutvaiva tu after hearing, rāghavaḥ Rama, haryṛkṣagaṇasaṅkulām troops of vanaras and bears, mahatīm huge, camūm army, prakarṣan leading, kṣipram at once, ēṣyati will approach.

viṣṭambhayitvā bāṇaughairakṣōbhyaṅ varuṇālayam.

kariṣyati purīṅ laṅkāṅ kākutsthaḥ śāntarākṣasām৷৷5.36.35৷৷


kākutsthaḥ Kakutstha, akṣōbhyam imperturbable, varuṇālayam abode of Varuna, bāṇaughaiḥ by torrent of arrows, viṣṭambhayitvā make still, laṅkāṅ purīm city of Lanka, śāntarākṣasām all the demons, kariṣyati will make.

"Kakutstha Rama will still the imperturbable abode of Varuna (ocean) by the torrent of his arrows and rid the city of Lanka of all the demons.
tatra yadyantarā mṛtyuryadi dēvāssahāsurāḥ.

sthāsyanti pathi rāmasya sa tānapi vadhiṣyati৷৷5.36.36৷৷


tatra there, rāmasya Rama's, pathi on his way, antarā in between, mṛtyuḥ death, sahāsurāḥ including all demons, dēvāḥ gods, sthāsyanti yadi if they obstruct, saḥ he, tānapi even them, vadhiṣyati will slay.

"Thereafter, whoever comes Rama's way, be it gods or demons or even death or any one else he will destroy them.
tavādarśanajēnāryē śōkēna sa pariplutaḥ.

na śarma labhatē rāmassiṅhārdita iva dvipaḥ৷৷5.36.37৷৷


āryē O noble lady!, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, tava your, adarśanajēna on account of not seeing you, śōkēna in sorrow, pariplutaḥ immersed, siṅhārditaḥ tormented by a lion, dvipaḥ iva like an elephant, śarma na labhatē is not happy.

"O noble lady! not being able to see you, Rama is immersed in an ocean of sorrow, he has no solace like an elephant tormented by a lion.
malayēna ca vindhyēna mēruṇā mandarēṇa ca.

dardurēṇa ca tē dēvi śapē mūlaphalēna ca৷৷5.36.38৷৷

yathā sunayanaṅ valgu bimbōṣṭhaṅ cāru kuṇḍalam .

mukhaṅ drakṣyasi rāmasya pūrṇacandramivōditam৷৷5.36.39৷৷


dēvi O Sita, malayēna ca by Malaya mountain, vindhyēna by Vindhya, mēruṇā by Meru, dardurēṇa by Dardura, mūlaphalēna by roots and fruits, tē to you, śapē I swear, yathā as, sunayanam with beautiful eyes, valgu bimbōṣṭham lips like bimba fruit, cāru kuṇḍalam with lovely ear-rings, uditam risen, pūrṇacandramiva like the full-moon, rāmasya Rama's, mukham face, drakṣyasi you will see.

"O Sita! I swear in the name of mountains like Malaya, Vindhya, Meru, and Dardura (the abodes of monkeys and bears) and by the roots and fruits as well (which are the food of vanaras). you will soon behold Rama with beautiful eyes, red lips like bimba fruit, lovely ear-rings and a countenance resembling the full moon.
kṣipraṅ drakṣyasi vaidēhi rāmaṅ prasravaṇē girau.

śatakratumivāsīnaṅ nāgarājasya mūrdhani৷৷5.36.40৷৷


vaidēhi Vaidehi, prasravaṇē girau on mount Prasravana, rāmam Rama, nāgarājasya elephant's, mūrdhani on the back, āsīnam seated, śatakratum iva like Indra who has performed a hundred sacrifices, kṣipram soon, drakṣyasi you will see.

"O Vaidehi, you will soon see Rama seated on the Prasravana mountain just as Indra (who performed a hundred sacrifices) seated on the back of the king of elephants.
na māṅsaṅ rāghavō bhuṅaktē na cā.pi madhu sēvatē.

vanyaṅ suvihitaṅ nityaṅ bhaktamaśnāti pañcamam৷৷5.36.41৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, māṅsam meat, na bhuṅaktē not eating, madhucāpi even wine, na sēvatē he is not taking, nityam always, pañcamam fifth meal, suvihitam prescribed for, vanyam available in the forest, bhuktam food, aśnāti eats.

"Rama is not eating meat, nor drinking wine. He takes only the one fifth of a meal
(sanctioned for an ascetic) available in the forest.
naiva daṅśānna maśakānna kīṭānna sarīsṛpān.

rāghavō.panayēdgātrāttvadgatēnāntarātmanā৷৷5.36.42৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, tvadgatēna thinking of you, antarātmanā with heart, gātrāt from his limbs, daṅśān flies, naiva apanayēt will not drive away, maśakān mosquitoes, na not, kīṭān insects, na not, sarīsṛpān serpents, na not.

"Since you left, Rama has been always thinking sincerely of you, no longer drives away flies or mosquitoes nor insects or serpents from his body (his mind entirely fixed on you).
nityaṅ dhyānaparō rāmō nityaṅ śōkaparāyaṇaḥ.

nānyaccintayatē kiñcitsa tu kāmavaśaṅ gataḥ৷৷5.36.43৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, nityam ever, dhyānaparaḥ reflecting on you, nityam ever, śōkaparāyaṇaḥ totally given to grief, saḥ he, kāmavaśaṅ gataḥ absorbed in love for you, anyat no other thoughts, na cintayatē he is not thinking.

"Rama is always lost in thought. He is totally given to grief. Absorbed in love for you, he thinks of none else৷৷
anidrassatataṅ rāmassuptō.pi ca narōttamaḥ.

sītēti madhurāṅ vāṇīṅ vyāharanpratibudhyatē৷৷5.36.44৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, satatam always, anidraḥ he does not sleep, narōttamaḥ best of men, suptō.pi even if he sleeps, sītēti calling out 'Sita', madhurām sweet, vāṇīm voice, vyāharan uttering, pratibudhyatē he wakes up.

"Rama, the best of men never goes to sleep and even if he drops off to sleep he mutters 'Sita, Sita!' in a sweet voice in his sleep.
dṛṣṭvā phalaṅ vā puṣpaṅ vā yadvā.nyatsumanōharam.

bahuśō hā priyētyēvaṅ śvasaṅstvāmabhibhāṣatē৷৷5.36.45৷৷


phalaṅ vā fruit or, puṣpaṅ vā or flowers, yadvā such similar, sumanōharam delightful, anyat any other thing, dṛṣṭvā seeing, śvasan while, hā priyētyēvam alas, darling, tvām you, bahuśaḥ in many, abhibhāṣatē speaks.

"Sighing deeply whenever Rama sees a fruit or a flower or any such delightful thing, he remembers you and calls you out again and again, saying, 'alas, my darling !'
sa dēvi nityaṅ paritapyamāna stvāmēva sītētyabhibhāṣamāṇaḥ.

dhṛtavratō rājasutō mahātmā tavaiva lābhāya kṛtaprayatnaḥ৷৷5.36.46৷৷


dēvi god-like lady, mahātmā great self, saḥ Rama, rājasutaḥ son of a king, nityam always, paritapyamānaḥ suffering, sītēti saying Sita, tvāmēva you only, abhibhāṣamāṇaḥ keeps talking in the air, dhṛtavrataḥ firm in his decision, tava your, lābhāya to secure you only, kṛtaprayatnaḥ makes efforts.

"O divine lady! prince Rama is ceaselessly suffering. He keeps talking to you in air. The determined Rama is only thinking of your recovery ".
sā rāmasaṅkīrtanavītaśōkā rāmasya śōkēna samānaśōkā.

śaranmukhē sāmbudaśēṣacandrā niśēva vaidēhasutā babhūva৷৷5.36.47৷৷


rāmasya Rama's, śōkēna because of his sorrow, samānaśōkā equally sad, rāmasaṅkīrtanavītaśōkā devoid of sorrow on hearing about Rama, sā she, vaidēhasutā the daughter of Videha, śaranmukhē at the advent of autumn, sāmbudaśēṣacandrā Moon muffled by clouds, niśēva like the night, babhūva appeared.

Her sorrow was mitigated by references made by Hanuman about Rama.She felt equally sad when she heard about Rama's agony. The princess from Videha appeared like a night at the advent of autumn, with the Moon looking partly muffled by clouds and partly bright.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē ṣaṭtriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtysixth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
