[Hanuman offers to carry Sita back to Rama-Sita politely Sita declines -- appeals to Hanuman to get Rama to take her.]

sītā tadvacanaṅ śrutvā pūrṇacandranibhānanā.

hamāmantamuvācēdaṅ dharmārthasahitaṅ vacaḥ৷৷5.37.1৷৷


pūrṇacandranibhānanā face like the full moon, sītā Sita, tadvacanam that word, śrutvā having heard, hanūmantam Hanuman, idam this, dharmārthasahitam full of righteousness, vacaḥ word, uvāca spoke.

To the righteous words (about Rama's grief) of Hanuman, Sita with a face like the full moon replied :
amṛtaṅ viṣasaṅsṛṣṭaṅ tvayā vānara bhāṣitam.

yacca nānyamanā rāmō yacca śōkaparāyaṇaḥ ৷৷5.37.2৷৷


vānara O vanara, rāmaḥ Rama, anyamanāḥ na not thinking of others, iti yat that way, iti ca yat and this way also (that he is sad), tvayā by you, bhāṣitam spoken, viṣasaṅsṛṣṭam mixed with poison, amṛtam nectar.

"O vanara! you have told me that Rama has his mind always fixed on me, not on others and you have also said that he is sad. It is like offering me poison mixed with nectar.
aiśvaryē vā suvistīrṇē vyasanē vā sudāruṇē.

rajjvēva puruṣaṅ baddhvā kṛtāntaḥ parikarṣati৷৷5.37.3৷৷


kṛtāntaḥ death, puruṣam a man, rajjvā with a cord, baddhvā iva like tying, suvistrīrṇē in the great, aiśvaryē vā in fortune, sudāruṇē deeply sunk, vyasanē vā in adversity, parikarṣati will snatch.

"Death snatches a man tied with a cord, whether he is rolling in luxury or sinking in adversity.
vidhirnūnamasaṅhāryaḥ prāṇināṅ plavagōttama.

saumitriṅ māṅ ca rāmaṅ ca vyasanai: paśya mōhitān৷৷5.37.4৷৷


plavagōttama O best of vanaras, prāṇinām for living beings, nūnam surely, vidhiḥ destiny, asaṅhāryaḥ it cannot be overcome, vyasanaiḥ with sorrows, mōhitān afflicted, saumitrim Saumitri, māṅ ca me too, rāmaṅ ca Rama also, paśya you see.

"O best of vanaras! surely it is not possible for living beings to overcome destiny. You see how Sri Rama, Saumitri, and my own self are all afflicted with grief.
śōkasyāsya kadā pāraṅ rāghavō.dhigamiṣyati.

plavamānaḥ pariśrāntō hatanau ssāgarē yathā৷৷5.37.5৷৷


sāgarē in the ocean, hatanauḥ in ship-wreck, plavamānaḥ while getting drowned, pariśrāntaḥ yathā who has suffered, rāghavaḥ Rama, asya of this, śōkasya from grief, pāram the shore, kadā when, adhigamiṣyati will he reach.

"When will Raghava reach the shore of this ocean of grief? He is like a man who has suffered a ship wreck, trying to swim?
rākṣasānāṅ vadhaṅ kṛtvā sūdayitvā ca rāvaṇam.

laṅkāmunmūlitāṅ kṛtvā kadā drakṣyati māṅ patiḥ৷৷5.37.6৷৷


patiḥ husband, rākṣasānām of all the demons, vadham killing, kṛtvā after doing, rāvaṇaṅ ca and Ravana, sūdayitvā after killing, laṅkām Lanka, unmūlitām uprooting, kṛtvā after doing, mām kadā when me, drakṣyati he will see.

"When will my husband see me after killing the demons including Ravana and uprooting Lanka?
sa vācyassaṅtvarasvēti yāvadēva na pūryatē.

ayaṅ saṅvatsaraḥ kālastāvaddhi mama jīvitam৷৷5.37.7৷৷


ayam this, saṅvatsaraḥ kālaḥ one year's time, yāvadēva until then, na pūryatē before it is completed, saṅtvarasvēti you may be quick, saḥ he, vācyaḥ he should be informed, mama I, jīvitam life, tāvaddhi till then only.

"One year's time has been given (by Ravana) to me. Rama should be informed to be quick in reaching before the completion of the time limit and that I will survive till then only.
vartatē daśamō māsō dvau tu śēṣau plavaṅgama.

rāvaṇēna nṛśaṅsēna samayō yaḥ kṛtō mama৷৷5.37.8৷৷


plavaṅgama O vanara, nṛśaṅsēna rāvaṇēna by the wicked Ravana, mama to me, yaḥ such, samayaḥ time, kṛtaḥ given, daśamaḥ tenth, māsaḥ month, vartatē is running, dvau tu two only, śēṣau remain.

"O vanara! this is the end of the tenth month. Only two more months are left. This is the condition laid by the wicked Ravana in my case.
vibhīṣaṇēna ca bhrātrā mama niryātanaṅ prati.

anunītaḥ prayatnēna na ca tatkurutē matim৷৷5.37.9৷৷


bhrātrā by the brother, vibhīṣaṇēna by Vibhisana, mama my, niryātanaṅ prati for my restoration, prayatnēna made efforts, anunītaḥ he was advised gently, tat such, matim thought, na kurutē he has not agreed.

"Vibhisana made efforts to advise Ravana for my restoration. But Ravana has not agreed to that.
mama pratipradānaṅ hi rāvaṇasya na rōcatē.

rāvaṇaṅ mārgatē saṅkhyē mṛtyuḥ kālavaśaṅ gatam৷৷5.37.10৷৷


mama my, pratipradānam returning, rāvaṇasya to Ravana, na rōcatē is not liked, kālavaśaṅ gatam fallen into the trap of time, rāvaṇam Ravana, saṅkhyē in a battle, mṛtyuḥ death, mārgatē is searching.

"Ravana did not like to return me having fallen into the death trap. Death lies in wait for him in battle.
jyēṣṭhā kanyā nalā nāma vibhīṣaṇasutā kapē.

tayā mamēdamākhyātaṅ mātrā prahitayā svayam৷৷5.37.11৷৷


kapē O vanara, nalā Nala, jyēṣṭhā eldest daughter, vibhīṣaṇasutā daughter of Vibhisana, mātrā prahitayā sent by her mother, tayā by her, svayam personally, idam here, mama to me, ākhyātam reported.

"O vanara! Nala the eldest daughter of Vibhisana sent by her mother came here personally and reported this to me.
asaṅśayaṅ hariśrēṣṭha kṣipraṅ māṅ prāpsyatē patiḥ.

antarātmā ca mē śuddhastasmiṅśca bahavō guṇāḥ৷৷5.37.12৷৷


hariśrēṣṭha O eminent vanara, patiḥ my lord, kṣipram soon, mām me, asaṅśayam no doubt, prāpsyati he will reach, mē my, antarātmā ca inner self also, śuddhaḥ pure, tasmiṅśca in that, bahavaḥ many, guṇāḥ are virtues.

"O eminent vanara! no doubt my lord will soon reach this place. My pure conscience tells me that Rama has many virtues.
utsāhaḥ pauruṣaṅ sattvamānṛśaṅsyaṅ kṛtajñatā.

vikramaśca prabhāvaśca santi vānara rāghavē৷৷5.37.13৷৷


vānaravanara, rāghavē in Rama, utsāhaḥ perseverance, pauruṣam manliness, sattvam prowess, anṛśaṅsyam kindness, kṛtajñatā gratitude, vikramaśca competence, prabhāvaśca power, santi endowed.

"O vanara! Rama is endowed with perseverance, manliness, prowess, kindness, gratitude, competence and power.
caturdaśasahasrāṇi rākṣasānāṅ jaghāna yaḥ.

janasthānē vinā bhrātrā śatruḥ kastasya nōdvijēt ৷৷5.37.14৷৷


yaḥ whoever, janasthānē in Janasthana, vinā bhrātrā without his brother also, rākṣasānām demons, caturdaśasahasrāṇi fourteen thousand, jaghāna slew, tasya his, kaḥ who, śatruḥ enemy, nōdvijēt will not tremble.

na sa śakyastulayituṅ vyasanaiḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ.

ahaṅ tasya prabhāvajñā śakrasyēva pulōmajā ৷৷5.37.15৷৷


puruṣarṣabhaḥ bull among men, saḥ he, vyasanaiḥ in calamities, tulayitum shaken, na śakyaḥ not possible, pulōmajā daughter of Puloma, śakrasyēva just as Indra, aham I, tasya his, prabhāvajñā know his might.

"O bull among men! he will not be shaken by calamities. Just as Sachi, the daughter of Puloma knows Indra's might I know Rama's.
śarajālāṅśumānśūraḥ kapē rāmadivākaraḥ.

śatrurakṣōmayaṅ tōyamupaśōṣaṅ nayiṣyati৷৷5.37.16৷৷


kapē O monkey!, śūraḥ valiant, rāmadivākara: Rama the Sun, śarajālāṅśumān with his volley of
dazzling arrows, śatrurakṣōmayam enemy forces of the demons, tōyam water, upaśōṣam will dry up, nayiṣyati will effect.

"O monkey! the valiant Rama is like the Sun-god shoofing a dazzling volley of arrows which will dry up the sea of enemy forces."
iti sañjalpamānāṅ tāṅ rāmārthē śōkakarśitām.

āśrusampūrṇanayanāmuvāca vacanaṅ kapiḥ৷৷5.37.17৷৷


iti thus, sañjalpamānām while she was speaking freely, rāmārthē on account of Rama, śōkakarśitām emaciated with sorrow, aśru sampūrṇanayanām her eyes filled with tears, tām her, kapiḥ vanara, vacanam word, uvāca spoke.

While Sita, tormented with grief on account of Rama was thus speaking, her eyes filled with tears, the monkey said:
śrutvaiva tu vacō mahyaṅ kṣipramēṣyati rāghavaḥ.

camūṅ prakarṣanmahatīṅ haryṛkṣagaṇasaṅkulām৷৷5.37.18৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, śrutvaiva tu after hearing this, vacaḥ word, mahyaṅ by me, kṣipram soon, aiṣyati he will reach, camūṅ an army, prakarṣan while leading, mahatīṅ huge, haryṛkṣagaṇasaṅkulām with an army of vanaras and bears.

"On hearing me Rama will reach soon with a huge army of vanaras and bears.
athavā mōcayiṣyāmi tvāmadyaiva varānanē.

asmāddhuḥkhādupārōha mama pṛṣṭhamaninditē৷৷5.37.19৷৷


athavā or, varānanē O lady with a beautiful face, tvām you, adyaiva now itself, asmāt from this, duḥkhāt from grief, mōcayiṣyāmi I shall redeem you, aninditē O blameles one, mama my, pṛṣṭham back, upārōha you may ascend.

"O beautiful lady, if you please, I shall redeem you today itself from grief. You may ride on my back, O blameless lady.
tvāṅ hi pṛṣṭhagatāṅ kṛtvā santariṣyāmi sāgaram.

śaktirasti hi mē vōḍhuṅ laṅkāmapi sarāvaṇām ৷৷5.37.20৷৷


tvām you, pṛṣṭhagatām placing you on my back, kṛtvā on doing so, sāgaram ocean, santariṣyāmi I can cross over, sarāvaṇām along with Ravana, laṅkāmapi even Lanka, vōḍhum to carry, mē to me, śakti capacity, asti hi indeed I have.

"Placing you on my back I shall cross the ocean. Indeed, I have the capacity to carry the entire city of Lanka along with Ravana.
ahaṅ prasravaṇasthāya rāghavāyādya maithili.

prāpayiṣyāmi śakrāya havyaṅ hutamivānalaḥ৷৷5.37.21৷৷


maithili O Mythili, analaḥ sacred fire, hutam put into fire, havyam oblations, śakrāya by Indra, aham I, prasravaṇasthāya to a person staying on Prasravan mountain, rāghavāya to Rama, adyaiva prāpayiṣyāmi I will take you today itself.

"O Mythili! Just as oblations offered to the sacred fire goes to Indra, I shall offer you today to Rama waiting on the Prasravana mountain.
drakṣyasyadvaiva vaidēhi rāghavaṅ sahalakṣmaṇam.

vyavasāyasamāyuktaṅ viṣṇuṅ daityavadhē yathā৷৷5.37.22৷৷


vaidēhi Vaidehi, daityavadhē in the killing of demons, vyavasāyasamāyuktam making all out efforts, viṣṇuṅ yathā like Visnu, sahalakṣmaṇam together with Lakshmana, rāghavam Rama, adyaiva right now, drakṣyasi you will see.

"O Vaidehi! you will see Rama and Lakshmana making all out efforts like Lord Visnu to kill the demons.
tvaddarśanakṛtōtsāhamāśramasthaṅ mahābalam.

purandaramivāsīnaṅ nāgarājasya mūrdhani৷৷5.37.23৷৷


tvaddarśanakṛtōtsāham enthused in seeing you, āśramastham staying in his asram, mahābalam mighty, nāgarājasya of the king of elephants Airavatam, mūrdhani on the back, āsīnam seated, purandaramiva like the destroyer of citadels (Indra).

Mighty Rama staying in asram ill be enthused to see you seated on my back like Lord Purandara (Indra) seated on the back of the lord of elephants (Airavata)
pṛṣṭhamārōha mē dēvi mā vikāṅkṣasva śōbhanē.

yōgamanviccha rāmēṇa śaśāṅkēnēva rōhiṇī৷৷5.37.24৷৷


dēvi O god like lady, mama my, pṛṣṭham back, ārōha climb up, śōbhanē O beautiful one, mā vikāṅkṣasva do not be reluctant, rōhiṇī Rohini, śaśāṅkēnēva like joining with the Moon, rāmēṇa with Rama, yōgam union, anviccha you may become.

"O god like lady! climb up my back. Do not be reluctant. Join Rama just as Rohini unites with the Moon, O beautiful one!
kathayantīva candrēṇa sūryēṇa ca mahārciṣā.

matpṛṣṭhamadhiruhya tvaṅ tarākāśamahārṇavau৷৷5.37.25৷৷


tvam you, matpṛṣṭham my back, adhiruhya after climbing up, candrēṇa with the Moon, mahārciṣā flaming light, sūryēṇa with the Sun, kathayantīva conversing, ākāśamahārṇavau sky and ocean, tara cross.

"Climb on my back and cross the ocean through space in the flaming light, conversing with Moon and Sun.
na hi mē samprayātasya tvāmitō nayatō.ṅganē.

anugantuṅ gatiṅ śaktāssarvē laṅkānivāsinaḥ৷৷5.37.26৷৷


aṅganē O beautiful lady, tvām you, itaḥ from the place, nayataḥ while carrying, samprayātasya joined together, mē my, gatim speed, anugantum to follow me, sarvē all, laṅkānivāsinaḥ the inhabitants of Lanka, na śaktāḥ not possible for any one.

"O beautiful lady! it is not possible for all the inhabitants of Lanka together to follow me while I carry you from this place.
yathaivāhamiha prāptastathaivāhamasaṅśayaḥ.

yāsyāmi paśya vaidēhi tvāmudyamya vihāyasam৷৷5.37.27৷৷


vaidēhi Vaidehi, yathaivāhamiha just as I reached here, prāptastathaiva in the same way I reached, ahama I, tvāmudyamya taking you on my back, yāsyāmi will go, vihāyasam across the sky, nasaṅśayaḥ no doubt, paśya you may see.

"O Vaidehi! just as I reached here I shall beyond doubt take you on my back in the same way across the sky without any difficulty. See.
maithilī tu hariśrēṣṭhācchrutvā vacanamadbhutam.

harṣavismitasarvāṅgī hanumantamathābravīt৷৷5.37.28৷৷


maithilī tu Mythili also, hariśrēṣṭhāt from the best of vanaras, adbhutam wonderful, vacanam word, śrutvā on hearing, harṣavismitasarvāṅgī experienced immense joy in every limb of her body, atha then, hanumantam Hanuman, abravīt said.

When Mythili heard the wonderful proposal from Hanuman, the best of vanaras, she experienced immense joy in every limb of her body and said:
hanumandūramadhvānaṅ kathaṅ māṅ vōḍhumicchasi.

tadēva khalu tē manyē kapitvaṅ hariyūthapa৷৷5.37.29৷৷


hanuman Hanuman, dūram distant, adhvānam path, mām me, vōḍhum carry, katham how, icchasi you intend, hariyūthapa O leader of vanaras, tē you, kapitvam monkey nature, tadēva khalu indeed that is, manyē I think.

"Hanuman! how do you intend to carry me to such a distant place? Indeed, it is your monkey nature, I suppose.
kathaṅ vālpaśarīrastvaṅ māmitō nētumicchasi.

sakāśaṅ mānavēndrasya bharturmē plavagarṣabha৷৷5.37.30৷৷


plavagarṣabha O bull among monkeys, alpaśarīraḥ small body, tvam you, itaḥ from here, mē my, bhartuḥ to my husband, mānavēndrasya lord of men, sakāśam presence of, nētum to carry, kathaṅ vā how is it, icchasi you intend.

"O bull among monkeys! you have such a small body. How can you intend to carry me from here to my husband, the lord of men"?
sītāyā vacanaṅ śrutvā hanumānmārutātmajaḥ.

cintayāmāsa lakṣmīvānnavaṅ paribhavaṅ kṛtam৷৷5.37.31৷৷


mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, lakṣmīvān illustrious one, hanumān Hanuman, sītāyāḥ Sita's, vacanam word, śrutvā on hearing, navam new, paribhavam kṛtam insult hurled, cintayāmāsa he thought.

On hearing Sita's new belittling statement about him, Hanuman, the illustrious son of the Wind-god reflected:
na mē jānāti sattvaṅ vā prabhāvaṅ vā.sitēkṣaṇā.

tasmātpaśyatu vaidēhī yadrūpaṅ mama kāmataḥ৷৷5.37.32৷৷


asitēkṣaṇā black-eyed, vaidēhī Vaidehi, mē my, sattvaṅ vā strength, prabhāvaṅ vā my power, na jānāti she is not aware, tasmāt therefore, kāmataḥ freely, mama my, yat that real, rūpam form, paśyatu see.

'Black-eyed Sita is not aware of my strength or my power. Therefore let her see the real (huge) form that I can assume at my free will'.
iti sañcintya hanumāṅstadā plavagasattamaḥ.

darśayāmāsa vaidēhyāssvarūpamarimardanaḥ৷৷5.37.33৷৷


plavagasattamaḥ the noble monkey, arimardanaḥ crusher of enemies,hanumān Hanuman, iti in that way, sañcintya thinking that way, tadā then, svarūpam his real form, vaidēhyāḥ to Vaidehi, darśayāmāsa he revealed.

Thinking thus, Hanuman, the noble monkey, crusher of enemies, started revealing his real form to Vaidehi.
sa tasmātpādapāddhīmānāplutya plavagarṣabhaḥ.

tatō vardhitumārēbhē sītāpratyayakāraṇāt৷৷5.37.34৷৷


dhīmān wise, plavagarṣabhaḥ bull among monkeys, saḥ he, tasmāt pādapāt from the tree, aplutya jumping down, tataḥ from there, sītāpratyayakāraṇāt in order to instil confidence in Sita, vardhitum to grow in size, ārēbhē started.

The wise bull among monkeys, jumped down from the tree and started growing in size in order to instil confidence in Sita.
mērumandarasaṅkāśō babhau dīptānalaprabhaḥ.

agratō vyavatasthē ca sītāyā vānarōttamaḥ৷৷5.37.35৷৷


vānarōttamaḥ foremost among vanaras, mērumandarasaṅkāśaḥ like mount Meru or Mandara, dīptānalaprabhaḥ glowing like blazing fire, babhau appeared, sītāyāḥ Sita's, agrataḥ in front, vyavatasthē
ca and stood there.

Hanuman, the foremost of the vanaras resembling mount Meru or Mandara stood there glowing like blazing fire in front of Sita.
hariḥ parvatasaṅkāśastāmravaktrō mahābalaḥ.

vajradaṅṣṭranakhō bhīmō vaidēhīmidamabravīt৷৷5.37.36৷৷


parvatasaṅkāśaḥ resembling a mountain, tāmravaktraḥ one who has a red face, mahābalaḥ very strong, vajradaṅṣṭranakhaḥ teeth and nails as strong as diamonds, bhīma: dreadful, hariḥ vanara, vaidēhīm to Vaidehi, idam this, abravīt said.

Resembling a mountain in size, with a red face, with teeth and nails strong like diamond, the vanara in dreadful form said to Vaidehi:
saparvatavanōddēśāṅ sāṭṭaprākāratōraṇām.

laṅkāmimāṅ sanāthāṅ vā nayituṅ śaktirasti mē৷৷5.37.37৷৷


saparvatavanōddēśām filled with mountains and gardens, sāṭṭaprākāratōraṇām forts, ramparts and gateways, sanāthām along with its king, imām this, laṅkāṅ vā Lanka itself, nayitum carried away, mē my, śakti: capacity, asti is there.

"I have the capacity to carry away this entire Lanka uprooted with its mountains, gardens, forts, ramparts and gateways along with the king.
tadavasthāpyatāṅ buddhiralaṅ dēvi vikāṅkṣayā.

viśōkaṅ kuru vaidēhi rāghavaṅ sahalakṣmaṇam৷৷5.37.38৷৷


dēvi queen, tat so, vikāṅkṣyā with unworthy attitude, alam enough, buddhi: intellect, avasthāpyatām be stable, vaidēhi Vaidehi, sahalakṣmaṇam with Lakshmana, rāghavam Rama, viśōkam rid of sorrow, kuru do.

"O queen! it is enough. Give up this unworthy attitude. Be stable. O Vaidehi, rid Lakshmana and Rama of grief".
taṅ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasaṅkāśamuvāca janakātmajā.

padmapatraviśālākṣī mārutasyaurasaṅ sutam৷৷5.37.39৷৷


padmapatraviśālākṣī with eyes large like lotus petals, janakātmā daughter of Janaka, bhīmasaṅkāśam dreadful to viewers, mārutasya Maruta's, aurasaṅ sutam own son, tam him, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, uvāca said.

Seeing the son of Maruta in dreadful form, the broad lotus petal-eyed daughter of Janaka with eyes as large as lotus petals replied :
tava sattvaṅ balaṅ caiva vijānāmi mahākapē.

vāyōriva gatiṅ caiva tējaścāgnērivādbhutam৷৷5.37.40৷৷


mahākapē O great monkey, tava your, sattvam strength, balaṅ caiva and power, vāyōriva like the Wind-god's, gatim speed, āgnēriva like fire's, adbhutam astonishing, tējaśca splendour, vijānāmi I have understood

"O great monkey! I have understood your strength and power. Your speed is like the Wind-god's and your power is astonishing and splendid.
prākṛtō.nyaḥ kathaṅ cēmāṅ bhūmimāgantumarhati.

udadhērapramēyasya pāraṅ vānarapuṅgava৷৷5.37.41৷৷


vānarapuṅgava O chief of vanaras, prākṛtaḥ an ordinary one, anyaḥ other, apramēyasya of an immeasurable one, udadhēḥ ocean's, pāram far off shore, imām this, bhūmim this land, āgantum reach, katham how, arhati fit.

"O chief of vanaras! how could an ordinary person be capable of reaching this land on far off shore of the immeasurable ocean?
jānāmi gamanē śaktiṅ nayanē cāpi tē mama.

avaśyaṅ sampradhāryāśu kāryasiddhirmahātmanaḥ৷৷5.37.42৷৷


gamanē in making the journey, mama me, nayanē in taking, śaktim power, jānāmi I know, mahātmanaḥ of the great soul, kāryasidadi success of the mission, avaśyam surely, āśu immediately, sampradhāryā after planning properly

"I know you are capable of carrying me on your journey. I am sure about the quick success of your mission which has been carried out after careful planning.
ayuktaṅ tu kapiśrēṣṭha mama gantuṅ tvayā.nagha.

vāyuvēgasavēgasya vēgō māṅ mōhayēttava৷৷5.37.43৷৷


anagha sinless one, kapiśrēṣṭha foremost monkey, tvayā by you, mama my, gantum to go with, ayuktam not proper, vāyuvēgasavēgasya of a person with the speed of the wind, tava your, vēgaḥ speed, mām me, mōhayēt will render me unconscious.

"O sinless and foremost monkey! going with you is not proper for me. Your wind-like speed will render me unconscious.
ahamākāśamāpannā hyuparyupari sāgaram.

prapatēyaṅ hi tē pṛṣṭhādbhayādvēgēva gacchataḥ৷৷5.37.44৷৷


sāgaram uparyupari above the ocean, ākāśam sky, aham I, vēgēna speedily, gacchataḥ when you go, tē your, pṛṣṭhāt from the back, bhayāt out of fear, āpannā when I reach, prapatēyam I may tumble down.

"When you fly over the ocean in the sky speedily I may tumble down from your back by your speed out of fear.
patitā sāgarē cāhaṅ timinakrajhaṣākulē.

bhavēyamāśu vivaśā yādasāmannamuttamam৷৷5.37.45৷৷


timinakrajhaṣākulē filled with whales, crocodiles and fish, sāgarē in the ocean, patitā fallen in, aham I, vivaśā helpless, āśu immediately, yādasām of aquatic animals, uttamam very good, annam food, bhavēyam I will be.

na ca śakṣyē tvayā sārdhaṅ gantuṅ śatruvināśana.

kalatravati sandēhastvayyapi syādasaṅśayaḥ৷৷5.37.46৷৷


śatruvināśana O destroyer of foes, tvayā sārtham along with you, gantum to go, na śakṣyē ca I have no power, kalatravati when burdened with a woman, tvayyapi with you also, saṅdēhaḥ doubt, syāt may be, asaṅśayaḥ there is no doubt.

"O destroyer of foes, it is not possible for me to go with you. Further, when you are burdened with a woman you will also fall into danger (because of me), no doubt.
hriyamāṇāṅ tu māṅ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasā bhīmavikramāḥ.

anugacchēyurādiṣṭā rāvaṇēna durātmanā৷৷5.37.47৷৷


hriyamāṇām while I am, mām me, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, bhīmavikramāḥ of fearsome valour, rākṣasāḥ demons, durātmanā by evil-minded, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, ādiṣṭāḥ ordered, anugacchēyuḥ they will pursue

"When I am seen (while being carried away) by the demons of fearsome valour they will pursue you, ordered by the wicked Ravana.
taistvaṅ parivṛtaśśūraiśśūlamudgarapāṇibhiḥ.

bhavēstvaṅ saṅśayaṅ prāptō mayā vīra kalatravān৷৷5.37.48৷৷


tvam you, śūlamudgarapāṇibhiḥ by those wielding spears and mace, taiḥ by them, śūraiḥ by warriors, parivṛtaḥ surrounded, vīra O hero, mayā by me, kalatravān one who has a wife, tvam you, saṅśayam doubt, prāptaḥ have been, bhavēḥ you.

"O heroic monkey! as the warriors armed with spears and maces surround you and attack, your life will be in danger, because of me.
sāyudhā bahavō vyōmni rākṣasāstvaṅ nirāyudhaḥ.

kathaṅ śakṣyasi saṅyātuṅ māṅ caiva parirakṣitum৷৷5.37.49৷৷


vyōmni in the sky, sāyudhāḥ will be armed with weapons, rākṣasāḥ demons, bahavaḥ many, tvam you, nirāyudhaḥ unarmed, saṅyātum to fight, mām me, parirakṣituṅ ca and safeguard, katham how, śakṣyasi you will be capable?

"The demons are in large number and they will be armed with weapons. You are unarmed. How can you fight and protect me?
yudhyamānasya rakṣōbhistava taiḥ krūrakarmabhiḥ.

prapatēyaṅ hi tē pṛṣṭhādbhayārtā kapisattama৷৷5.37.50৷৷


kapisattama O noble monkey, tava your, krūrakarmabhiḥ by those of wicked deeds, taiḥ by them, rakṣōbhiḥ by the demons, yudhyamānasya for you while engaged in fighting, bhayārtā out of fear, tē your, pṛṣṭhāt from the back, prapatēyaṅ hi I will drop down.

"O noble monkey! while you are engaged in fighting with those demons of wicked deeds, I may drop down out of fear.
atha rakṣāṅsi bhīmāni mahānti balavanti ca.

kathañcitsāṅparāyē tvāṅ jayēyuḥ kapisattama৷৷5.37.51৷৷


kapisattama O noble monkey, atha then, bhīmāni fearsome, mahānti massive, balavanti ca powerful, rakṣāṅsi demons, sāṅparāyē in the fight, kathañcit in any case, tvām you, jayēyuḥ win over.

"O noble monkey! the massive, fearsome and powerful demons may defeat you in the fight in any way.
athavā yudhyamānasya patēyaṅ vimukhasya tē.

patitāṅ ca gṛhītvā māṅ nayēyuḥ pāparākṣasāḥ৷৷5.37.52৷৷


athavā or else, yudhyamānasya for you while engaged in the fighting, tē for you, vimukhasya while you turn your attention other way, patēyam I may fall down, patitām when I have fallen down, mām me, gṛhītvā taking hold, pāparākṣasāḥ wretched rakshasas, nayēyuḥ may take me away.

"Or else, while you are engaged in fighting and turn your attention the other way I might fall down and the sinful ogres may bear me away.
māṅ vā harēyustvaddhastādviśasēyurathāpi vā.

avyavasthau hi dṛśyētē yuddhē jayaparājayau৷৷5.37.53৷৷


tvat hastāt from your hand, mām me, harēyuḥ they may take one away, athāpi vā or rather, viśasēyuḥ may cut me, yuddhē in the fight, jayaparājayau success or failure, avyavasthau not sure, dṛśyētē hi they appear.

"They may snatch me away from your hands or cut me to pieces. Success or defeat is uncertain in a war.
ahaṅ vāpi vipadyēyaṅ rakṣōbhirabhitarjitā.

tvatprayatnō hariśrēṣṭha bhavēnniṣphala ēva tu৷৷5.37.54৷৷


rakṣōbhiḥ caught by the ogres, abhitarjitā very much threatened, aham I, vipadyēyaṅ vāpi or else I
may die, hariśrēṣṭha best of monkeys, tvatprayatnaḥ your effort, niṣphala ēva will be wasteful, tu indeed, bhavēt may be.

"In such a case, caught and intimidated by the demons I may die. Then your efforts will be wasted.
kāmaṅ tvamasi paryāptō nihantuṅ sarvarākṣasān.

rāghavasya yaśō hīyēttvayā śastaistu rākṣasaiḥ৷৷5.37.55৷৷


tvam you, sarvarākṣasān all the ogres, nihantum to slay, paryāptaḥ api kāmam it may be you can do the task, tvayā by you, śastai by those killed, rākṣasaiḥ by demons, rāghavasya Rama's, yaśaḥ fame, hīyēt will diminish.

"It may be that you can kill all the demons but by such an act the fame of Rama will be diminished. (He cannot give his strength a trial)
athavā.dāya rakṣāṅsi nyasēyussamvṛtē hi mām.

yatra tē nābhijānīyurharayō nāpi rāghavau৷৷5.37.56৷৷


athavā or else, rakṣāṅsi the ogres, mām me, ādāya after taking, yatra where, tē harayaḥ those of you vanaras, rāghavau api and even Rama and Lakshmana, nābhijānīyuḥ may not know, saṅvṛtē in a secret place, nyasēyu: they may hide.

"Or else, the ogres will carry me and conceal me in a secret place which the vanaras or Rama and Lakshmana may not know.
ārambhastu madarthō.yaṅ tatastava nirarthakaḥ.

tvayā hi saha rāmasya mahānāgamanē guṇaḥ৷৷5.37.57৷৷


tataḥ then, madarthaḥ for my sake, tava your, ārambhastu effort, nirarthakaḥ futile, tvayā saha along with you, rāmasya Rama, āgamanē coming here, mahān great, guṇaḥ merit.

mayi jīvitamāyattaṅ rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ.

bhrātrūṇāṅ ca mahābāhō tava rājakulasya ca৷৷5.37.58৷৷


mahābāhō strong-armed one, mahātmanaḥ of the great self, rāghavasya Rama's, bhrātrūṇām of his brothers, tava your, rājakulasya of the relatives of your king, jīvitam life, mayi in me, āyattam is dependent.

"O strong-armed Hanuman! your life and the life of the great self Rama, of his brother, and relatives of your king is dependent upon my survival.
tau nirāśau madarthaṅ tu śōkasantāpakarśitau.

saha sarvarkṣaharibhistyakṣyataḥ prāṇasaṅgraham৷৷5.37.59৷৷


madartham for my sake, śōkasantāpakarśitau emaciated with sorrow and suffering, tau they both, nirāśau with no hope of finding me, sarvarkṣaharibhiḥ saha along with all vanaras and bears, prāṇasaṅgraham the five elements of which life is made, tyakṣyataḥ will give up.

"Both Rama and Lakshmana who are emaciated with sorrow and suffering on account of me will give up their lives along with vanaras and bears.
bharturbhaktiṅ puraskṛtya rāmādanyasya vānara.

na spṛśāmi śarīraṅ tu puṅsō vānarapuṅgava৷৷5.37.60৷৷


vānarapuṅgava O chief of vanaras, vānara vanara, bhartuḥ husband's, bhaktim devotion, puraskṛtya after cherishing, rāmāt from Rama, anyasya other, puṅsaḥ man's, śarīraṅ tu body, na spṛśāmi I do not touch.

"O chief of vanaras! I cherish my devotion towards Rama alone and not touch the body of any other man.
yadahaṅ gātrasaṅsparśaṅ rāvaṇasya balādgatā.

anīśā kiṅ kariṣyāmi vināthā vivaśā satī৷৷5.37.61৷৷


aham I, balāt by force, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, gātrasaṅsparśam touch of his body, gatā yat that I had to experience, anīśā having no control over my self, vivaśā satī a helpless woman, vināthā without my husband, kiṅ kariṣyāmi what can I do?

"I had no control over myself. I was helpless and my husband was not present when I had to bear the touch of Ravana's limbs. What can I do?
yadi rāmō daśagrīvamiha hattvā sabāndhavam.

māmitō gṛhya gacchēta tattasya sadṛśaṅ bhavēt৷৷5.37.62৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, sabāndhavam along with his relations, daśagrīvam Ravana, iha here, hattvā after killing, mām me, itaḥ from here, gṛhya taking, gacchēta yadi and if he goes, tat then, tasya his, sadṛśam proper, bhavēt it will be.

"It will be proper if Rama comes here, kills Ravana along with all his relations and takes me away.
śrutā hi dṛṣṭāśca mayā parākramā mahātmanastasya raṇāvamardinaḥ.

na dēvagandharvabhujaṅgarākṣasā bhavanti rāmēṇa samā hi saṅyugē৷৷5.37.63৷৷


raṇāvamardinaḥ of the crusher of enemies, mahātmanaḥ great self, tasya his, parākramāḥ valiant deeds, mayā by me, śrutāḥ heard, dṛṣṭāśca witnessed, saṅyugē in war, dēvagandharvabhujaṅgarākṣasāḥ whether gods, gandharvas, nagas or demons, rāmēṇa by Rama, samāḥ equal, nahi not indeed.

"I have seen and heard about Rama's conquest of enemies and his valiant deeds in war. Indeed, gods gandharvas, nagas or even demons cannot match him in war.
samīkṣya taṅ saṅyati citrakārmukam mahābalaṅ vāsavatulyavikramam.

salakṣmaṇaṅ kō viṣahēta rāghavaṅ hutāśanaṅ dīptamivānilēritam৷৷5.37.64৷৷


citrakārmukam wielder of a powerful bow, mahābalam endowed with great strength, vāsavatulyavikramam equal to Vasava in valour, salakṣmaṇam along with Lakshmana, anilēritam whipped by wind, dīptam blazing, hutāśanamiva like the fire, taṅ rāghavam him, Rama, sayati in war, samīkṣya facing, kaḥ who, viṣahētaḥ can withstand.

salakṣmaṇaṅ rāghavamājimardanaṅ diśāgajaṅ mattamiva vyavasthitam.

sahēta kō vānaramukhya saṅyugē yugāntasūryapratimaṅ śarārciṣam৷৷5.37.65৷৷


vānaramukhya chief of vanaras, salakṣmaṇam with Lakshmana, ājimardanam crusher of enemies in war, mattam intoxicated, diśāgajamiva like the elephant supporting quarter of the earth, vyavasthitam steady, śarārciṣam arrows of rays, yugāntasūryapratimam resembling the Sun at the at the time of the deluge, rāghavam Rama, saṅyugē in a war, kaḥ who, sahēta can withstand.

"O chief of vanaras! who can withstand Rama accompanied by Lakshmana, the conqueror of enemies? His arrows resemble the rays of the Sun at the time of the deluge, steady like the elephants who support the quarters of the earth.
sa mē hariśrēṣṭha salakṣmaṇaṅ patiṅ sayūthapaṅ kṣipramihōpapādaya.

cirāya rāmaṅ prati śōkakarśitāṅ kuruṣva māṅ vānaramukhya harṣitām৷৷5.37.66৷৷


hariśrēṣṭha O foremost of the vanaras, saḥ he, salakṣmaṇam with Lakshmana, sayūthapam along with army troops, patim lord, kṣipram quick, iha here, upapādaya bring, vānaramukhya chief of vanaras, rāmaṅ prati with Rama, cirāya for a long time, śōkakarśitām emaciated with suffering, mām me, harṣitām a happy lady, kuruṣva you may make.

"O foremost of the vanaras! get Rama here along with Lakshmana and the lord of vanara troops quickly. O chief of vanaras! this way you can bring happiness to one like me who is emaciated with suffering on account of Rama.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē saptatriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyseventh sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
