[Hanuman carries the episode of Kakasura and the Chudamani from Sita to Rama as a mark of identification]

tatassa kapiśārdūlastēna vākyēna tōṣitaḥ.

sītāmuvāca tacchṛtvā vākyaṅ vākyaviśāradaḥ৷৷5.38.1৷৷


tataḥ then, vākyaviśāradaḥ eloquent in speech, saḥ kapiśārdūlaḥ tiger among monkeys, tat vākyam those words, śrutvā hearing, tēna vākyēna by those words, tōṣitaḥ contented with, sītām to Sita, uvāca said.

Satisfied with the words of Sita, the tiger among monkeys, who was eloquent in speech said:
yuktarūpaṅ tvayā dēvi bhāṣitaṅ śubhadarśanē.

sadṛśaṅ strīsvabhāvasya sādhvīnāṅ vinayasya ca৷৷5.38.2৷৷


śubhadarśanē whose appearance is auspicious, dēvi queen, tvayā you, bhāṣitam spoken, yuktarūpam is in accordance with your nature, strīsvabhāvasya of feminine nature, sādhvīnām of virtuous women, vinayasya ca and of the modesty, sadṛśam appropriate.

"O queen! O lady of auspicious appearance! your words are most appropriate to and characteristic of a modest virtuous woman.
strītvaṅ na tu samarthaṅ hi sāgaraṅ vyativartitum.

māmadhiṣṭhāya vistīrṇaṅ śatayōjanamāyatam৷৷5.38.3৷৷


mām me, adhiṣṭhāya after climbing up, vistīrṇam vast, śatayōjanam of hundred yojanas, āyatam wide, sāgaram the ocean, vyativartitum to cross, strītvam for a woman, na samarthaṅ hi is not possible.

"It may not be possible for a woman to cross on my back the vast ocean stretching over a hundred yojanas. It is not possible for a woman.
dvitīyaṅ kāraṇaṅ yacca bravīṣi vinayānvitē.

rāmādanyasya nārhāmi saṅsparśamiti jānaki ৷৷5.38.4৷৷

ētattē sadṛśaṅ dēvi patnyāstasya mahātmanaḥ.

kā hyanyā tvāmṛtē dēvi brūyādvacanamīdṛśam৷৷5.38.5৷৷


vinayānvitē O lady with humility etc., jānaki Janaki, rāmāt from Rama, anyasya of others, saṅsparśam touch, nārhimi I do not want, yat that which, dvitīyam second, kāraṇam reason, bravīṣi you said, ētat that, tasya his, mahātmanaḥ of the great soul, patnyāḥ of the wife, tē to you, sadṛśam appropriate, dēvi O queen, tvām your, ṛtē excepting, anyā other than, kā who else, īdṛśam such, vacanam word, brūyāt will speak.

"O humble lady! the second reason given by you, 'I ought not to touch a person other than Rama' is well said and worthy of you, being the wife of the great soul. Who else can speak such words?
śrōṣyatē caiva kākutstha: sarvaṅ niravaśēṣataḥ.

cēṣṭitaṅ yattvayā dēvi bhāṣitaṅ mama cāgrataḥ৷৷5.38.6৷৷


kākutstha: Rama the scion of the Kakutstha family, sarvaṅ all, dēvi queen, tvayā your, yat what ever, cēṣṭitam is done, mama my, agrataḥ presence, bhāṣitaṅ ca you have spoken, sarvam all, niravaśēṣataḥ without omission, śrōṣyatē ca will hear.

"O queen! Kakutstha Rama will hear from me fully all that has been said and done by you in my presence without any omission.
kāraṇairbahubhirdēvi rāmapriyacikīrṣayā.

snēhapraskannamanasā mayaitatsamudīritam৷৷5.38.7৷৷


dēvi O queen!, bahubhiḥ with many, kāraṇaiḥ with reasons, rāmapriyacikīrṣayā desiring to please Rama, snēhapraskannamanasā mind is sprinkled with love, mayā by me, ētat this, samudīritam uttered.

"O queen! my heart is drenched with love for Rama and desires to please him for many reasons. Therefore these words have been spoken by me.
laṅkāyā duṣpravēśatvāddustaratvānmahōdadhēḥ.

sāmarthyādātmanaścaiva mayaitatsamudīritam৷৷5.38.8৷৷


laṅkāyāḥ of Lanka, duṣpravēśatvāt difficult to enter, mahōdadhēḥ of the ocean, dustaratvāt difficult to cross, ātmanaḥ of my self, sāmarthyāścaiva because of my capacity, mayā by me, ētat all this, samudīritam pronounced.

"Crossing the ocean and entering Lanka are difficult. But I accomplished it. Hence my proposal.
icchāmi tvāṅ samānētumadyaiva raghubandhunā.

gurusnēhēna bhaktyā ca nānyathaitadudāhṛtam৷৷5.38.9৷৷


gurusnēhēna out of love for my master, bhaktyā ca and devotion, tvām you, raghubandhunā with Rama, adyaiva today itself, samānētum to take, icchāmi desirous of, ētat all this, anyathā any other, na udāhṛtam not mentioned otherwise.

"I offered to take you today itself out of my love and devotion to Rama with a desire to unite you with him and not with any other intention.
yadi nōtsahasē yātuṅ mayā sārthamaninditē.

abhijñānaṅ prayaccha tvaṅ jānīyādrāghavō hi yat৷৷5.38.10৷৷


aninditē O blameless lady, mayā sārtham along with me, yātum to go, nōtsahasē yadi if not desiring, yat that, rāghavaḥ Rama, jānīyāt coming and seeing you, abhijñānam to let him know, tvam you, prayaccha you may give me a token of identity.

"O blameless lady! If you wish not to accompany me you may give me a token of identification to let Rama know about my coming here and seeing you".
ēvamuktā hanumatā sītā surasutōpamā.

uvāca vacanaṅ mandaṅ bāṣpapragrathitākṣaram৷৷5.38.11৷৷

idaṅ śrēṣṭhamabhijñānaṅ brūyāstvaṅ tu mama priyam.


hanumatā by Hanuman, ēvam in that way, uktā having been addressed, surasutōpamā resembling a god's daughter, sītā Sita, bāṣpapragrathitākṣaram words choked with tears, vacanam word, mandam in low tone, uvāca said, tvaṅ tu you also, mama my, priyam dear, śrēṣṭham best, idam thus, abhijñānam token of identity, brūyāḥ said.

Having heard Hanuman, Sita, a child of god, said these words in a low tone. Choked with tears, 'Carry this token of identity to my dear husband':
śailasya citrakūṭasya pādē pūrvōttarē purā৷৷5.38.12৷৷

tāpasāśramavāsinyāḥ prājyamūlaphalōdakē.

tasminsiddhāśramē dēśē mandākinyā vidūrataḥ৷৷5.38.13৷৷

tasyōpavanaṣaṇḍēṣu nānāpuṣpasugandhiṣu.

vihṛtya salilē klinnā mamāṅkē samupāviśamaḥ৷৷5.38.14৷৷


purā earlier, citrakūṭasya śailasya on the mountain of Chitrakuta, pūrvōttarē in the north-east, pādē on foot, prājyamūlaphalōdakē with abundant roots fruits and water, tasmin in that, siddhāśramē Siddhasrama, dēśē in a region, mandākinyādhyavidūrataḥ not far from Mandakini river, tasya of him, nānāpuṣpasugandhiṣu many kinds of fragrant flowers, upavanaṣaṇḍēṣu in gardens, salilē in water, vihṛtya after sporting, klinnaḥ wet, tāpasāśramavāsinyāḥ hermitages of ascetics, mama me,
aṅkē the body, samupāviśaḥ you were seated.

'Long ago we were staying at Siddhasrama. This hermitage was situated to the north-east at the foot of Chitrakuta mountain which was not far from the river Mandakini. It had abundant roots, fruits and water. You sported with me in the gardens which were fragrant with many types of flowers and ponds. You sat down on my lap with wet clothes in the hermitage'.
tatō māṅsasamāyuktō vāyasaḥ paryatuṇḍayat.

tamahaṅ lōṣṭamudyamya vārayāmisma vāyasam৷৷5.38.15৷৷


tataḥ then, māṅsasamāyuktaḥ it brought meat, vāyasaḥ crow, paryatuṇḍayat went round with its beak and pecked, aham I, lōṣṭam clod of earth, udyamya by lifting, tam him, vāyasam that crow, vārayāmi sma I presented him.

'Then a crow greedy of flesh began to peck my bossom with its beak. I took a clod of earth and warded him off.
dārayansa ca māṅ kākastattraiva parilīyatē.

na cāpyupāramanmāṅsādbhakṣārthi balibhōjanaḥ৷৷5.38.16৷৷


saḥ kākaḥ that crow, mām me, dārayan while pecking, tatraiva there itself, parilīyatē waited, bhakṣārthi hungry for food, saḥ he, balibhōjanaḥ eater of offerings, māṅsāt flesh, na upāramaccāpi was not giving up.

'The crow was an eater of offerings, hungry for food began to peck me again and again for flesh.He did not stop.
utkarṣantyāṅ ca raśanāṅ kruddhāyāṅ mayi pakṣiṇi.

srasyamānē ca vasanē tatō dṛṣṭā tvayā hyaham৷৷5.38.17৷৷


mayi I, pakṣiṇi by the crow, kruddhāyām when I was angry, vasanē when the cloth, srasyamānē ca was
slipping, raśanām waist string, utkarṣantyāṅ ca as I was pulling up, tataḥ then, tvayā by you, aham I, dṛṣṭā seen.

'My upper cloth was slipping. I was trying to pull up my waist string angrily when you saw me.
tvayā.pahasitā cāhaṅ kruddhā saṅlajjitā tadā.

bhakṣagṛdhnēna kākēna dāritā tvāmupāgatā৷৷5.38.18৷৷


tadā then, kruddhā enraged, aham I, tvayā your, apahasitā made fun of me, saṅlajjitā embarassed, bhakṣagṛdhnēna by the voracious bird, kākēna by the crow, dāritā torn, tvām you, upāgatā sought.

'Then you made fun of me, and I became angry. I was abashed. Torn by the voracious bird I sought your shelter.
āsīnasya ca tē śrāntā punarutsaṅgamāviśam.

krudhyantī ca prahṛṣṭēna tvayā.haṅ parisāntvitā৷৷5.38.19৷৷


śrāntā exhausted, āsīnasya when you sat, tē your, utsaṅgam lap, punaḥ again, āviśam settled again, krudhyantī seeing me angry, aham I, prahṛṣṭēna happily, tvayā by you, parisāntvitā you pacified me.

'Exhausted, I sat on your lap again. Seeing my angry face you pacified me. You were happy (to see me draw close).
bāṣpapūrṇamukhī mandaṅ cakṣuṣī parimārjatī.

lakṣitā.haṅ tvayā nātha vāyasēna prakōpitā৷৷5.38.20৷৷


nātha O lord!, vāyasēna by the crow, prakōpitā angered, bāṣpapūrṇamukhī face filled with tears, mandam slowly, cakṣuṣī eyes, parimārjatī while wiping, aham I was, tvayā you, lakṣitā marked.

'O lord! when I was angered by the crow and my face was filled with tears, you marked me wiping my eyes.
pariśramātprasuptā ca rāghavāṅkē.pyahaṅ ciram.

paryāyēṇa prasuptaśca mamāṅkē bharatāgrajaḥ৷৷5.38.21৷৷


ahamapi I too, pariśramāt due to exhaustion, rāghavāṅkē on Rama's lap, ciram for long time, prasuptā ca I slept, paryāyēṇa in turn, bharatāgrajaḥ Bharata's elder brother, mama my, aṅkē on the lap, prasuptaḥ slept.

'Totally exhausted I slept on your lap for a long time, and in turn you slept on my lap later.
sa tatra punarēvātha vāyasassamupāgamat.

tatassuptaprabuddhāṅ māṅ rāmasyāṅkātsamutthitām৷৷5.38.22৷৷

vāyasassahasāgamya vidadāra stanāntarē.

punaḥ punarathōtpatya vidadāra sa māṅ bhṛśam৷৷5.38.23৷৷


atha and then, saḥ vāyasaḥ that crow, punarēva again, tatra there, samupāgamat came back, tataḥ then, saḥ he, vāyasaḥ crow, sahasā atonce, āgamya having come, suptaprabuddhām awakened from sleep, rāmasya Rama's, aṅkāt from the lap, samutthitām risen, mām myself, stanāntarē between my breasts, vidadāra clawed, atha and, punaḥ again, utpatya flying, mām myself, bhṛśam repeatedly, vidadāra clawed down.

'The crow came back again and clawed me in the space between my breasts even after I woke up after slumber from Rama's lap. Flying, it tore my bosom again and again.
tatassamukṣitō rāmō muktaiśśōṇitabindubhiḥ.

vāyasēna tatastēna balavatkliśyamānayā৷৷5.38.24৷৷

sa mayā bōdhitaśśrīmānsukhasuptaḥ parantapaḥ.


tataḥ then, rāmaḥ Rama, muktai: dripping, śōṇitabindubhiḥ drops of blood, samukṣitaḥ seeing, tataḥ then, tēna vāyasēna by that crow, balavat forcibly, kliśyamānayā tormented, mayā by me, śrīmān illustrious, parantapaḥ scorcher of foes, sukhasuptaḥ happily sleeping, saḥ he, bōdhitaḥ he was awakened.

sa māṅ dṛṣṭvā mahābāhurvitunnāṅ stanayōstadā৷৷5.38.25৷৷

āśīviṣa iva kruddhaśvasanvākyamabhāṣata.


mahābāhuḥ strong armed, saḥ Rama, tadā then, stanayōḥ in the breasts, vitunnām wounded, mām me, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, kruddhaḥ angered, āśīviṣa iva like a (hissing) snake, śvasan breathing hard, vākyam these words, abhāṣata spoke.

'O strong-armed Rama, seeing my torn breasts, you became angry like a hissing serpent and hissing said :
kēna tē nāganāsōru vikṣataṅ vai stanāntaram৷৷5.38.26৷৷

kaḥ krīḍati sarōṣēṇa pañcavaktrēṇa bhōginā.


nāganāsōru lady whose thighs look like elephant's trunk, sītā Sita, stanāntaram your breasts, kēna by whom, vikṣataṅ vai wounded, sarōṣēṇa with the angry, pañcavaktrēṇa five-hooded, bhōginā by the serpent, kaḥ who, krīḍati sporting.

'O Sita with a beautiful lap like an elephant trunk! by whom is your bosom wounded? Who is sporting with an angry five-hooded snake?
vīkṣamāṇastatastaṅ vai vāyasaṅ samudaikṣata৷৷5.38.27৷৷

nakhaissarudhiraistīkṣṇairmāmēvābhimukhaṅ sthitam.


tataḥ then, vīkṣamāṇaḥ while glancing, sarudhiraiḥ with blood stained, tīkṣṇaiḥ with sharp ones, nakhaiḥ with nails, māmēva me, abhimukham facing me, sthitam standing, taṅ vāyasam that crow, samudaikṣata vai he saw.

'Then looking around, you saw the crow facing me with sharp, blood-stained claws.
puttraḥ kila sa śakrasya vāyasaḥ patatāṅ varaḥ৷৷5.38.28৷৷

dharāntaragataśśīghraṅ pavanasya gatau samaḥ.


patatām of the birds, varaḥ eminent, saḥ vāyasaḥ that crow, śakrasya Indra's, putraḥ kila it is said that he is the son, dharāntaragataḥ he covered a long distance, śīghram in great speed, gatau in movement, pavanasya Wind-god's, samaḥ matching.

'This crow was the best of birds. He was surely Indra's son who had covered a long distance with great speed and his speed was like the Wind-god's.
tatastasminmahābāhuḥ kōpasaṅvartitēkṣaṇaḥ৷৷5.38.29৷৷

vāyasē kṛtavānkrūrāṅ matiṅ matimatāṅ varaḥ.


tataḥ then, matimatām among the wise, varaḥ best, mahābāhuḥ strong-armed, kōpasaṅvartitēkṣaṇaḥ with eye balls rolling in anger, tasmin him, vāyasē at the crow, krūrām cruel, matim mind, kṛtavān made up.

'Then you, the strong-armed and best among the wise, your eyeballs rolling in fury, made up your mind about the cruel crow.
sa darbhaṅ saṅstarādgṛhya brāhmēṇāstrēṇa yōjayat৷৷5.38.30৷৷

sa dīpta iva kālāgnirjajvālābhimukhō dvijam.


saḥ he, Rama, saṅstarāt from his darbha mat, darbham darbha grass, gṛhya took out, brāhmēṇa astrēṇa invoked the weapon of Brahma into it by reciting the mantra, yōjayat discharged, saḥ that, dīptaḥ blazed, kālāgniriva like the fire of death, dvijam the bird, abhimukhaḥ towards, jajvāla glowed.

'Taking out a blade of darbha grass from your mat, you invoked the weapon of Brahma by reciting the mantra. Then you discharged it which blazed like the fire of death and went spear-heading towards the crow.
sa taṅ pradīptaṅ cikṣēpa darbhaṅ taṅ vāyasaṅ prati৷৷5.38.31৷৷

tatastaṅ vāyasaṅ darbhassōmbarē.nujagāma ha.


saḥ he, pradīptam glowing, taṅ darbham that darbha, taṅ vāyasaṅ prati him, the crow in turn, cikṣēpa threw, tataḥ then, saḥ darbhaḥ that darbha, taṅ vāyasam that crow, ambarē in the sky, anujagāma ha followed.

'Then you threw the burning darbha grass at the crow and it chased him in the sky.
anusṛṣṭastadā kākō jagāma vividhāṅ gatim৷৷5.38.32৷৷

lōkakāma imaṅ lōkaṅ sarvaṅ vai vicacāra ha.


tadā then, kākaḥ that crow, anusṛṣṭaḥ one who was followed, vividhām many, gatim places, jagāma went, lōkakāmaḥ the entire universe desiring safety, imam this, sarvam all, lōkam worlds, vicacāra ha went round.

'Then that crow flew to many places seeking asylum all over the universe chased by the blade of grass.
sa pitrā ca parityaktassuraiśca samaharṣibhiḥ৷৷5.38.33৷৷

trīnlōkānsamparikramya tamēva śaraṇaṅ gataḥ.


saḥ he, trīn three, lōkān worlds, samparikramya having gone round, pitrā ca and to his father
also, samaharṣibhiḥ including the sages, suraiśca by gods, parityaktaḥ rejected, tamēva him alone, śaraṇaṅ gataḥ went seeking refuge.

'Then the crow went round all the three worlds, having been rejected by his father Indra, including all the sages and gods. Refused by all he came back to Rama seeking shelter.
sa taṅ nipatitaṅ bhūmau śaraṇyaśśaraṇāgatam৷৷5.38.34৷৷

vadhārhamapi kākutstha: kṛpayā paryapālayat.


śaraṇyaḥ saviour, saḥ kākutstha: that Kakutstha, śaraṇāgatam one who sought refuge, bhūmau on the ground, nipatitam fallen on the ground, tam him, vadhārhamapi even though deserves to be killed, kṛpayā out of compassion, paryapālayat saved.

'Seeing the crow fallen on the ground, O Kakutstha, you who are a saviour of those who seek refuge saved him out of compassion, even though he deserved to be killed.
paridyūnaṅ viṣaṇṇaṅ ca sa tamāyāntamabravīt৷৷5.38.35৷৷

mōghaṅ kartuṅ na śakyaṅ tu brāhmamastraṅ taducyatām.


saḥ Rama, paridyūnam pained, viṣaṇṇam despondent, āyāntam he reached, tam him, abravīt said, brāhmam astram Brahma weapon, mōgham in vain, kartum to do, na śakyaṅ tu not possible, tat that, ucyatām tell.

'Rama, you saw the crow in pain and despondency who returned to you and said that it is not possible to make Brahma's weapon ineffectual.You may tell now. (what should be done.)
hinastu dakṣiṇākṣi tvacchara ityatha sō.bravīt৷৷5.38.36৷৷

tatastasyākṣi kākasya hinasti sma sa dakṣiṇam.

dattvā sa dakṣiṇaṅ nētraṅ prāṇēbhyaḥ parirakṣitaḥ৷৷5.38.37৷৷


atha and then, saḥ that, tvaccharaḥ your arrow, dakṣiṇākṣi right eye, hinastu may be blinded, iti thus, abravīt said, tataḥ then, saḥ he, tasya kākasya that crow's, dakṣiṇam right, akṣi eye, hinasti sma blinded by hitting, saḥ that, dakṣiṇam right, dattvā having offered, prāṇēbhyaḥ from life, parirakṣitaḥ protected.

'Then that crow said, 'let my right eye be blinded'. you then hit the right eye of the crow'. Thus the crow offered his right eye and saved himself.
sa rāmāya namaskṛtya rājñē daśarathāya ca.

visṛṣṭastēna vīrēṇa pratipēdē svamālayam৷৷5.38.38৷৷


saḥ that crow, rāmāya to Rama, rājñē to the king, daśarathāya ca and to Dasaratha, namaskṛtya having offered salutations, tēna by him, vīrēṇa by the warrior, visṛṣṭaḥ permitted to leave, svam his own, ālayam dwelling, pratipēdē went reached.

'That crow offered salutations to you Rama and king Dasaratha, thereafter took permission and went to his own dwelling.
matkṛtē kākamātrē tu brahmāstraṅ samudīritam.

kasmādyō māṅ harēttvattaḥ kṣamasē taṅ mahīpatē৷৷5.38.39৷৷


mahīpatē lord of the earth, matkṛtē for the sake of, kākamātrē on a mere crow, brahmāstram weapon of Brahma, samudīritam released, tvattaḥ from you, mām me, yaḥ he who, aharat abducted, tam him, kasmāt why, kṣamasē you excuse him.

'(Addressing Rama as though he was present before her, Sita said) 'O lord of the earth! for my sake you released the weapon of Brahma on a crow. What makes you excuse him who has abducted me?
sa kuruṣva mahōtsāhaḥ kṛpāṅ mayi nararṣabha.

tvayā nāthavatī nātha hyanāthā iva dṛśyatē৷৷5.38.40৷৷


nararṣabha bull among men, saḥ Rama, mahōtsāhaḥ one with great love, mayi in me, kṛpām compassion, kuruṣva bestow, nātha O lord, tvayā your, nāthavatī I have been protected, anāthā iva like an orphan, dṛśyatē appears.

'O bull among men! you are so loving to me. I am like an orphan. Be kind to me. She who has found her lord in you stays without a protector.
ānṛśaṅsyaṅ parō dharmastavattta aiva mayā śrutaḥ.

jānāmi tvāṅ mahāvīryaṅ mahōtsāhaṅ mahābalam৷৷5.38.41৷৷

apārapāramakṣōbhyaṅ gāmbhīryātsāgarōpamam.

bhartāraṅ sasamudrāyā dharaṇyā vāsavōpamam৷৷5.38.42৷৷


anṛśaṅsyam kindness, paraḥ supreme, dharmaḥ is righteous, mayā by me, tvattaḥ ēva from you alone,śrutaḥ heard, tvām you, mahāvīryam heroic, mahōtsāham vigour, mahābalam mighty, apārapāram boundless, akṣōbhyam never to be stirred, gāmbhīryāt with depth, sāgarōpamam like the ocean, sasamudrāyāḥ inclusive of seas, dharaṇyāḥ of the earth, bhartāram lord, vāsavōpamam like Vasava, jānāmi I know.

'O my supreme lord! I know you are kind, righteous, valiant, vigroous, mighty. You are boundless, calm and deep like the ocean. You are lord of earth and the seas and compeer of Vasava. I have heard from you that motiveless compassion is the best way to make one righteous.
ēvamastravidāṅ śrēṣṭhassatyavānbalavānapi.

kimarthamastraṅ rakṣassu na yōjayasi rāghava৷৷5.38.43৷৷


rāghava Rama, ēvam in that way, astravidām among the users of weapons, śrēṣṭhaḥ expert, satyavān truthful, balavānapi even strong, rakṣassu demons, astram weapon, kimartham why, na yōjayasi you are not using?

'Even though you are an expert in the use of weapons, truthful and strong. (Yet) why
are you not using weapons aganst the demons?'
na nāgā nā.pi gandharvā nāsurā na marudgaṇāḥ.

rāmasya samarē vēgaṅ śaktāḥ pratisamādhituṅ৷৷5.38.44৷৷


samarē in war, rāmasya Rama's, vēgam speed, pratisamādhitum to hit back, nāgāḥ serpents, na śaktāḥ not able, gandharvā api even gandharvas, na not, asurāḥ demons, na not, marudgaṇāḥ marutas, na not.

(Now Sita turns to Hanuman and says) "In war serpents, gandharvas, demons or Marutas cannot withstand the speed of Rama's arrows and hit back.
tasya vīryavataḥ kaścidyadyasti mayi sambhramaḥ.

kimarthaṅ na śaraistīkṣṇai: kṣayaṅ nayati rākṣasān৷৷5.38.45৷৷


vīryavataḥ hero of great discipline, tasya his, mayi in me, kaścit even a little, sambhramaḥ hurry, asti yadi if he has, tīkṣṇaiḥ with sharp, śaraiḥ with arrows, rākṣasān at the demons, kimartham why, kṣayam destroy, na nayati not killing.

"Does Rama have a little anxiety about me? If he has, why does he, a disciplined hero, not put an end to the demons with his sharp arrows?
bhrāturādēśamādāya lakṣmaṇō vā parantapaḥ.

kasya hētōrna māṅ vīraḥ paritrāti mahābalaḥ৷৷5.38.46৷৷


parantapaḥ scorcher of enemies, mahābalaḥ mighty, vīraḥ hero, lakṣmaṇō vā even Lakshmana, bhrātuḥ brother, ādēśam order, ādāya after taking, kasya hētōḥ for what reason, mām me, na paritrāti not rescue.

"Or, why does the mighty hero, Lakshmana, who is a scorcher of enemies, not come to my rescue taking the orders from his brother?
yadi tau puruṣavyāghrau vāyvagnisamatējasau.

surāṇāmapi durdharṣau kimarthaṅ māmupēkṣataḥ৷৷5.38.47৷৷


vāyvagnisamatējasau resembling wind and fire in power, puruṣavyāghrau two tigers among men, tau they both, surāṇām even the gods, durdharṣau yadi api even though unassailable also, mām me, kimartham how is it, upēkṣataḥ disregarding.

"Both Rama and Lakshmana are tigers among men who resemble wind and fire in power and have the unassailability of the gods. Wherefore are they disregarding me?.
mamaiva duṣkṛtaṅ kiñcinmahadasti na saṅśayaḥ.

samarthāvapi tau yanmāṅ nāvēkṣētē parantapau৷৷5.38.48৷৷


mamaiva mine alone, mahat atrocious, kiñcit some, duṣkṛtam sin, asti is committed, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no, yat because, samarthāvapi although capable, parantapau both scorchers of enemies, tau both, mām me, na āvēkṣētē not deliver.

"Perhaps I must have committed an atrocious sin. There is no doubt. For although both of them are scorchers of enemies, they deliver me not."
vaidēhyā vacanaṅ śrutvā karuṇaṅ sāśrubhāṣitam.

athābravīnmahātējā hanumānmārutātmajaḥ৷৷5.38.49৷৷


atha and then, mahātējāḥ lustrous, mārutātmajaḥ Wind-god's son, hanumān Hanuman, vaidēhyā Vaidehi's, sāśru with tears, karuṇam piteous, bhāṣitam spoken, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, abravīt said.

Hearing the piteous words of Vaidehi and beholding her eyes filled with tears, the Wind-god's son, lustrous Hanuman replied thus:.
tvacchōkavimukhō rāmō dēvi satyēna tē śapē.

rāmē duḥkhābhipannē ca lakṣmaṇaḥ paritapyatē৷৷5.38.50৷৷


dēvi Devi, rāmaḥ Rama, tvacchōkavimukhaḥ he is averse to your misery, satyēna truly, tē your, śapē I vow, rāmē when Rama, duḥkhābhipannē immersed in sorrow, lakṣmaṇaḥ ca even Lakshmana, paritapyatē wails.

"O god-like lady! Rama is not averse to your misery. On my word this is true. Rama is immersed in sorrow. Even Lakshmana wails.
kathañcidbhavatī dṛṣṭā na kālaḥ paridēvitum.

imaṅ muhūrtaṅ duḥkhānāṅ drakṣyasyantamaninditē৷৷5.38.51৷৷


kathañcit with difficulty, bhavatī your self, dṛṣṭā could be found, paridēvitum wailing, kālaḥ time, na not, aninditē blameless lady, imam this, muhūrtam moment, duḥkhānām all sorrrow, antam end, drakṣyasi you will see.

"I could find you with difficulty. This is not the time to wail. O blameless lady! take it, your sorrow has come to an end at this moment.
tāvubhau puruṣavyāghrau rājaputrau mahābalau.

tvaddarśanakṛtōtsāhau laṅkāṅ bhasmīkariṣyataḥ৷৷5.38.52৷৷


puruṣavyāghrau two tigers among men, mahābalau mighty, tvaddarśanakṛtōtsāhau eager to see you, ubhau both, tau rājaputrau those two princes, laṅkām this Lanka, bhasmīkariṣyataḥ will reduce to ashes.

"Both the mighty brothers, tigers among men, are eager to see you. Both the princes will reduce this Lanka into ashes.
hattvā ca samarē krūraṅ rāvaṇaṅ sahabāndhavam.

rāghavastvāṅ viśālākṣi nēṣyati svāṅ purīṅ prati৷৷5.38.53৷৷


viśālākṣi O large-eyed lady, rāghavaḥ Rama, samarē in war, sahabāndhavam along with relatives, krūram cruel, rāvaṇam Ravana, hatvā after killing, svāṅ purīṅ prati towards his city, tvām you, nēṣyati he will be taking you.

"O large-eyed lady! cruel Ravana along with his relatives will be killed by Rama in war and Rama will return to his city with you.
brūhi yadrāghavō vācyō lakṣmaṇaśca mahābalaḥ.

sugrīvō vāpi tējasvī harayō.pi samāgatāḥ৷৷5.38.54৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, yat whichever, vācyaḥ you may like to convey, mahābalaḥ mighty Rama, lakṣmaṇaśca and Lakshmana, tējasvī brilliant, sugrīvō vāpi and Sugriva also, samāgatāḥ those who collect there, harayō.pi even the vanaras, brūhi say.

"Communicate your message to mighty Rama and Lakshamana, to brilliant Sugriva and even the vanaras who gather there.
ityuktavati tasmiṅstu sītā surasutōpamā.

uvāca śōkasantaptā hanumantaṅ plavaṅgamam৷৷5.38.55৷৷


tasmin when he, iti in that way, uktavati when he said, surasutōpamā lady resembling a god's daughter, sītā Sita, śōkasantaptā filled with grief, plavaṅgamam to vanara, hanumantam Hanuman, uvāca said

"Hanuman having spoken this way, Sita, resembling a god's daughter, grieving, thus addressed Hanuman:
kausalyā lōkabhartāraṅ suṣuvē yaṅ manasvinī.

taṅ mamārthē sukhaṅ pṛccha śirasā cābhivādaya৷৷5.38.56৷৷


lōkabhartāram lord of the world, yam whom, manasvinī sensitive woman, kausalyā Kausalya, suṣuvē bore, tam him, madarthē on my behalf, sukham welfare, pṛccha you may inquire into, śirasā by
bowing, abhivādaya ca offer salutations.

"Bow to Rama and offer salutations on my behalf. Inquiries concerning his welfare should be addressed to Rama, whom virtuous Kausalya bore as a son.
srajaśca sarvaratnāni priyā yāśca varāṅganāḥ.

aiśvaryaṅ ca viśālāyāṅ pṛthivyāmapi durlabham৷৷5.38.57৷৷

pitaraṅ mātaraṅ caiva sammānyābhiprasādya ca.

anupravrajitō rāmaṅ sumitrā yēna suprajāḥ৷৷5.38.58৷৷


yēna by whom, sumitrā Sumitra, suprajāḥ has attained the title of blessed mother, srajaśca garlands, sarvaratnāni all jewels, priyāḥ dear, yāḥ those, varāṅganāḥ best of women, viśālāyām in the vast, pṛthivyām in the whole earth, durlabham most difficult to attain, aiśvaryaṅ cāpi prosperity also, pitaram father, mātaraṅ cāpi even mother, sammānya having respected, abhiprasādya pleased by adopting the life of an ascetic, ca and, rāmam with Rama, anupravrajitaḥ accompanied.

ānukūlyēna dharmātmā tyaktvā sukhamanuttamam.

anugacchati kākutsthaṅ bhrātaraṅ pālayanvanē৷৷5.38.59৷৷


dharmātmā righteous self, anuttamam great, sukham pleasures, tyaktvā having given up, bhrātaram his brother, kākutstham Kakustha Rama, vanē to the forest, ānukūlyēna in his favour, pālayan while serving, anugacchati followed.

"Great, righteous Lakshmana had given up his pleasures and followed his brother Rama in his favour into the forest to be able to serve him.
siṅhaskandhō mahābāhurmanasvī priyadarśinaḥ.

pitṛvadvartatē rāmē mātṛvanmāṅ samācaran৷৷5.38.60৷৷


siṅhaskandha: lion-shoulders, mahābāhuḥ strong-armed one, manasvī high-souled, priyadarśanaḥ a handsome person, mām me, mātṛvat like his mother, samācaran while treating, rāmē with Rama, pitṛvat as his father, vartatē conducts.

"Lakshmana, who has lion-shoulders and strong arms, who is handsome, who takes Rama as his father and treats me as his own mother.
hriyamāṇāṅ tadā vīrō na tu māṅ vēda lakṣmaṇaḥ.

vṛddhōpasēvī lakṣmīvān śaktō na bahubhāṣitā৷৷5.38.61৷৷

rājaputraḥ priyaḥ śrēṣṭhaḥ sadṛśaḥ śvaśurasya mē.


vīraḥ hero, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, tadā then, mām me, hriyamāṇām while I was borne away, na vēda not know, vṛddhōpasēvī serving elders, lakṣmīvān prosperous, śaktaḥ energetic, na bahubhāṣitā limited in speech, mē my, śvaśurasya of my father-in-law, sadṛśaḥ resembles, priyaḥ dear, śrēṣṭhaḥ foremost, rājaputraḥ prince.

"Heroic Lakshmana, did not know while I was borne away. He is prosperous, foremost in serving elders. He is energetic and reserved in his speech like my father-in-law. He is a prince dear (to his brother).
mamaḥ priyatarō nityaṅ bhrātā rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ৷৷5.38.62৷৷

niyuktō dhuri yasyāṅ tu tāmudvahati vīryavān.


rāmasya Rama's, bhrātā brother, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, nityam always, mama to me, priyataraḥ loving, vīryavān heroic, yasyām in whichever, dhuri task, niyuktaḥ he is entrusted, tām such a job, udvahati executes.

"Rama's brother Lakshmana is always dear to me. Heroic Lakshmana will discharge whichever responsibility is entrusted to him.
yaṅ dṛṣṭvā rāghavō naiva vṛttamāryamanusmarēt৷৷5.38.63৷৷

sa mamārthāya kuśalaṅ vaktavyō vacanānmama.


yam who, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, rāghavaḥ Rama, vṛttam support, āryam noble, na anusmarēt not remembering, saḥ he, mama my, arthāya sake, mama on me, vacanāt words, kuśalam welfare, vaktavyaḥ that I have enquired.

"He is Lakshmana for whose care and support Rama did not miss the noble king Dasaratha (during exile). Convey him my words of enquiry about his well-being.
mṛdurnityaṅ śucirdakṣaḥ priyō rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ৷৷5.38.64৷৷

yathā hi vānaraśrēṣṭha duḥkhakṣayakarō bhavēt.

tvamasminkāryaniryōgē pramāṇaṅ harisattamaḥ৷৷5.38.65৷৷


vānaraśrēṣṭhaḥ excellent vanara, harisattama: esteemed vanaras, mṛduḥ gentle, nityam always, śuciḥ pure, dakṣaḥ competent, rāmasya Rama's, priyaḥ beloved, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, yathā as such, duḥkhakṣayakaraḥ who mitigates suffering, bhavēt will be, asmin in that, kāryaniryōgē in a task, tvam you, pramāṇam authority.

"Lakshmana is soft, pure, competent and dear to Rama. O great vanara, act in such a manner that Lakshmana can mitigate my suffering. O great monkey, the best of vanaras! you are competent in accomplishing this task.
rāghavastvatsamārambhānmayi yatnaparō bhavēt.

idaṅ brūyāśca mē nāthaṅ śūraṅ rāmaṅ punaḥ punaḥ৷৷5.38.66৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, tvatsamārambhāt by your efforts alone, mayi regarding me, yatnaparaḥ one who makes efforts, bhavēt will be, mē my, nātham husband, śūram powerful hero, rāmam Rama, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, idam this, brūyāḥ may tell.

"By your efforts alone my husband will try for my release. You may tell these words to my heroic husband, Rama, again and again.
jīvitaṅ dhārayiṣyāmi māsaṅ daśarathātmaja.

ūrdhvaṅ māsānna jīvēyaṅ satyēnāhaṅ bravīmi tē৷৷5.38.67৷৷


daśarathātmaja Dasaratha's son, Rama, māsam a month, jīvitam life, dhārayiṣyāmi will hold on to life, māsāt after a month, ūrdhvam beyond that, na jīvēyam I will not live, aham I, satyēna on truth, tē to you, bravīmi I am telling.

"I will hold on to life only for a month. Beyond, I will not survive. I swear by truth. You may tell this to Rama.
rāvaṇēnōparuddhāṅ māṅ nikṛtya pāpakarmaṇā.

trātumarhasi vīra tvaṅ pātālādiva kauśikīm৷৷5.38.68৷৷


vīra hero, pāpakarmaṇā by the wicked, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, nikṛtya after insulting, uparuddhām imprisonment, mām me, tvam you, pātālāt from the underworld or Pataala, kauśikīmiva like Kausik, trātum rescue me, arhasi is proper.

"O heroic Rama! just as Kausik was rescued from the underworld it behoves you to deliver me from imprisonment of wicked Ravana".
tatō vastragataṅ muktvā divyaṅ cūḍāmaṇiṅ śubham.

pradēyō rāghavāyēti sītā hanumatē dadau৷৷5.38.69৷৷


tataḥ then, sītā Sita, vastragatam tied up in clothes, śubham auspicious, divyam exquisite, cūḍāmaṇim Chudamani, an ornament worn on the head, muktvā took out, rāghavāya to Rama, pradēyaḥ to be given, iti thus, hanumatē to Hanuman, dadau gave.

Then Sita took out the exquisite and auspicious Chudamani worn on the head, untied from her clothes and gave it to Hanuman to be presented to Rama.
pratigṛhya tatō vīrō maṇiratnamanuttamam.

aṅgulyā yōjayāmāsa na hyasya prābhavadbhujaḥ৷৷5.38.70৷৷


tataḥ then, vīraḥ hero, anuttamam very great, maṇiratnam jewel, pratigṛhya after taking, aṅgulyā on his finger, yōjayāmāsa placed asya to his, bhujaḥ arm, na prābhavat hi was not fitting.

Then Hanuman, taking the extraordinary jewel and placed it on his finger as it was not fitting to his arm.
maṇiratnaṅ kapivaraḥ pratigṛhyābhivādya ca.

sītāṅ pradakṣiṇaṅ kṛtvā praṇataḥ pārvśataḥ sthitaḥ৷৷5.38.71৷৷


kapivaraḥ best of vanaras, maṇiratnam jewel, pratigṛhya after taking, sītām from Sita, abhivādya ca having saluted, pradakṣiṇaṅ kṛtvā having circumambulated, praṇataḥ humbly, pārśvataḥ by the side, sthitaḥ stood.

Having recieved the jewel from Sita and circumambulated her, Hanuman offered salutations to her and stood by her.
harṣēṇa mahatā yuktaḥ sītādarśanajēna saḥ.

hṛdayēna gatō rāmaṅ śarīrēṇa tu viṣṭhitaḥ৷৷5.38.72৷৷


saḥ he, sītādarśanajēna by seeing Sita, mahatā with a great, harṣēṇa joy, yuktaḥ endowed, hṛdayēna his mind, rāmam to Rama, gataḥ went, śarīrēṇa tu but body, viṣṭhitaḥ stood there.

Hanuman stood there physically, with great joy gazing at Sita, but mentally he was with Rama.
maṇivaramupagṛhya taṅ mahārhaṅ janakanṛpātmajayā dhṛtaṅ prabhāvāt.

giririva pavanāvadhūtamuktaḥ sukhitamanāḥ pratisaṅkramaṅ prapēdē৷৷5.38.73৷৷


mahārham precious, janakanṛpātmajayā by Janaka's daughter, dhṛtam borne, taṅ maṇivaram that great jewel, upagṛhya taking, prabhāvāt by its glow, pavanāvadhūtamuktaḥ shaken by wind and released, giririva like a mountain, sukhitamanāḥ pleased, pratisaṅkramam to return, prapēdē prepared.

Having received the most precious jewel from the daughter of Janaka, Hanuman prepared to return like a mountain released from the impact of the wind.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē aṣṭatriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyeighth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
