[Hanuman witnesses Ravana's strength at Lanka.]

స నిర్జిత్య పురీం శ్రేష్ఠాం లఙ్కాం తాం కామరూపిణీమ్.

విక్రమేణ మహాతేజా హనుమాన్ కపిసత్తమః৷৷5.4.1৷৷

అద్వారేణ చ మహాబాహుః ప్రాకారమభిపుప్లువే.


కపిసత్తమః monkey chief, మహాతేజాః mighty, మహాబాహుః of strong shoulders, సః హనుమాన్ that Hanuman, కామరూపిణీమ్ who can assume any form at free will, శ్రేష్ఠామ్ excellent, తాం లఙ్కామ్ that deity of Lanka, విక్రమేణ by his prowess, నిర్జిత్య having won, అద్వారేణ by the rear entrance, ప్రాకారమ్ boundary, అభిపుప్లువే leapt over.

Hanuman, the strong-shouldered, mighty monkey chief having defeated the (presiding) deity of Lanka who could assume any form at her will, leaped over the boundary wall of the rear entrance of the excellent city by his prowess.
ప్రవిశ్య నగరీం లఙ్కాం కపిరాజహితంకరః৷৷5.4.2৷৷

చక్రేథ పాదం సవ్యం చ శత్రూణాం స తు మూర్ధని.


కపిరాజహితంకరః one who wishes the welfare of the king of monkeys, సః he, లఙ్కాం నగరీమ్ Lanka city, ప్రవిశ్య entered, అథ then, శత్రూణామ్ of enemy, మూర్ధని forehead, సవ్యం పాదమ్ left foot, చక్రే placed.

Hanuman, a devotee of the king of monkeys entered the city of Lanka placing his left foot first on the forehead of the city and proceeded (by tradition one enters the enemy's dwelling by placing the left foot first to cause defeat of the enemy).
ప్రవిష్టః సత్త్వసమ్పన్నో నిశాయాం మారుతాత్మజః৷৷5.4.3৷৷

స మహాపథమాస్థాయ ముక్తాపుష్పవిరాజితమ్.

తతస్తు తాం పురీం లఙ్కాం రమ్యామభియయౌ కపిః৷৷5.4.4৷৷


సత్త్వసమ్పన్నః endowed with great strength, సః మారుతాత్మజః that son of the Wind-god, నిశాయామ్ at night, ముక్తాపుష్పవిరాజితమ్ set with flowers of pearls, మహాపథమ్ highway, ఆస్థాయ having made way, ప్రవిష్టః entered, తతః then, కపిః monkey, తామ్ that, రమ్యామ్ enchanting, లఙ్కాం పురీమ్ Lanka city, అభియయౌ went.

The son of the Wind-god, endowed with great strength, entered the enchanting Lanka and walked along the highway set with flowers of pearls.
హసితోత్కృష్టనినదైస్తూర్యఘోషపురస్సరైః.

వజ్రాంకుశనికాశైశ్చ వజ్రజాలవిభూషితైః৷৷5.4.5৷৷

గృహమేఘైః పురీ రమ్యా బభాసే ద్యౌరివామ్బుదైః.


హసితోత్కృష్టనినదైః filled with sounds of laughter, తూర్యఘోషపురః సరైః reverberating with sounds of musical instruments, వజ్రాంకుశనికాశైశ్చ by those comparable to the goads of diamonds, వజ్రజాలవిభూషితైః adorned with diamond lattices, గృహమేఘైః the houses like clouds, రమ్యా beautiful, పురీ city, అమ్బుదైః with clouds, ద్యౌరివ like the sky, బభాసే was shining.

The houses reverberating with sounds of laughter and of musical instruments, decorated with lattice windows of diamonds resembled the sky shining with clouds with a goad made of diamond (thunderbolt of Indra).
ప్రజజ్వాల తతో లఙ్కా రక్షోగణగృహైః శుభైః৷৷5.4.6৷৷

సితాభ్రసదృశైశ్చిత్రైః పద్మస్వస్తికసంస్థితైః.

వర్ధమానగృహైశ్చాపి సర్వతః సువిభూషితా৷৷5.4.7৷৷


తతః then, సితాభ్రసదృశైః resembling white clouds, చిత్రైః with paintings, పద్మస్వస్తికసంస్థితైః with lotus, swastika marks engraved, శుభైః by auspicious ones, రక్షోగణగృహైః by the houses of demons, వర్ధమానగృహైశ్చాపి by auspicious houses, సర్వతః all over, సువిభూషితా very well decorated, ప్రజజ్వాల glittering.

The city of Lanka appeared radiant with its tall mansions resembling white clouds. The mansions had auspicious marks of lotus and swastika engraved on them and were opening in the direction of the south.
తాం చిత్రమాల్యాభరణాం కపిరాజహితఙ్కరః.

రాఘవార్థం చరన్ శ్రీమాన్ దదర్శ చ ననన్ద చ৷৷5.4.8৷৷


కపిరాజహితఙ్కరః the wellwisher of the vanara king (Sugriva), శ్రీమాన్ prosperous, రాఘవార్థమ్ for Raghava, చరన్ looked around, చిత్రమాల్యాభరణామ్ with colourful garland, తామ్ that city, దదర్శ saw, చ and, ననన్ద చ felt glad.

Glorious Hanuman, well-wisher of Sugriva, king of vanaras, looked around the city, decorated with colourful garlands. Surveying it for the cause of Raghava, he was greatly delighted.
భవనాద్భవనం గచ్ఛన్ దదర్శ పవనాత్మజః.

వివిధాకృతిరూపాణి భవనాని తతస్తతః৷৷5.4.9৷৷


భవనాత్ from one building, భవనమ్ to another building, గచ్ఛన్ going, పవనాత్మజః Hanuman, తతస్తతః here and there, వివిధాకృతిరూపాణి different kinds of structures, భవనాని buildings, దదర్శ saw.

Going from one building to another, Hanuman saw mansions of different kinds structures.
శుశ్రావ మధురం గీతం త్రిస్థానస్వరభూషితమ్.

స్త్రీణాం మదసమృద్ధానాం దివి చాప్సరసామివ৷৷5.4.10৷৷


దివి in heaven, అప్సరసామివ just like apsaras, మదసమృద్ధానామ్ of intoxicated ones, స్త్రీణామ్ of women, త్రిస్థాన from the three levels namely chest, neck, head and three pitches known as Mandra, Madhya and Tara, స్వరభూషితమ్ decorated with swara (musical voice),
మధురమ్ melodious, గీతమ్ song, శుశ్రావ heard.

He heard melodious songs of intoxicated women set to tune in three places namely chest, throat and head and three pitches known as mandra (slow) madhya (medium) and tara (high). The songs resembled those of the apsarasas well set in musical notes set to music.
శుశ్రావ కాఞ్చీనినదం నూపురాణాం చ, నిఃస్వనమ్.

సోపాననినదాంశ్చైవ భవనేషు మహాత్మనామ్৷৷5.4.11৷৷

అస్ఫోటితనినాదాంశ్చ క్ష్వేలితాంశ్చ తతస్తతః.


మహాత్మానామ్ of great persons, భవనేషు in the mansions, కాఞ్చీనినదమ్ sounds of bells worn on the waist, నూపురాణామ్ anklets, నిస్స్వనమ్ sounds, సోపాననినదాంశ్చైవ sounds of climbing steps, అస్ఫోటితనినాదాంశ్చ sounds of clapping of hands, క్ష్వేలితాంశ్చ sounds of people joking, తతస్తతః everywhere, శుశ్రావ heard.

Great Hanuman heard the jingling sounds of waist bells and anklets of women and sounds of great men climbing up and down flights of steps, sounds of clapping and joking everywhere in the mansions.
శుశ్రావ జపతాం తత్ర మన్త్రాన్ రక్షోగృహేషు వై৷৷5.4.12৷৷

స్వాధ్యాయనిరతాంశ్చైవ యాతుధానాన్ దదర్శ సః.

రావణస్తవసంయుక్తాన్ గర్జతో రాక్షసానపి৷৷5.4.13৷৷


తత్ర there, రక్షోగృహేషు in the demons' houses, జపతామ్ of those chanting, మన్త్రాన్ sacred (verses) words, శుశ్రావ heard, సః he, స్వాధ్యాయనిరతాన్ of those engaged in the study of Vedas continuously, యాతుధానాన్ of demons, దదర్శ saw, రావణస్తవసంయుక్తాన్ those engaged in the eulogy of Ravana, గర్జతః of those shouting, రాక్షసానపి even the demons, దదర్శ saw.

He heard chantings of sacred verses in the houses of demons engaged in the study of the vedas. And heard demons singing loudly the eulogy of Ravana.
రాజమార్గం సమావృత్య స్థితం రక్షోబలం మహత్.

దదర్శ మధ్యమే గుల్మే రావణస్య చరాన్ బహూన్৷৷5.4.14৷৷


మధ్యమే in the midst, గుల్మే in the city, రాజమార్గమ్ highway, సమావృత్య surrounding, స్థితమ్ stationed, మహత్ great, రక్షోబలమ్ army of demons, రావణస్య of Ravana, బహూన్ many, చరాన్ spies, దదర్శ observed.

He observed large contingents of demons lining the highway and spies of Ravana stationed in the middle of the city.
దీక్షితాన్ జటిలాన్ ముణ్డాన్ గోజినామ్బరవాససః.

దర్భముష్టిప్రహరణానగ్నికుణ్డాయుఘాంస్తథా৷৷5.4.15৷৷

కూటముద్గరపాణీంశ్చ దణ్డాయుధధరానపి.

ఏకాక్షానేకకర్ణాంశ్చ లమ్బోదరపయోధరాన్৷৷5.4.16৷৷

కరాలాన్ భుగ్నవక్త్రాంశ్చ వికటాన్ వామనాంస్తథా.

ధన్వినః ఖఙ్గినశ్చైవ శతఘ్నీముసలాయుధాన్৷৷5.4.17৷৷

పరిఘోత్తమహస్తాంశ్చ విచిత్రకవచోజ్జ్వలాన్.

నాతిస్థూలాన్నాతికృశాన్నాతిదీర్ఘాతిహ్రస్వకాన్৷৷5.4.18৷৷

నాతిగౌరాన్నాతికృష్ణాన్నాతికుబ్జాన్న వామనాన్.

విరూపాన్ బహురూపాంశ్చ సురూపాంశ్చ సువర్చసః.5.4.19৷৷

ధ్వజీన్ పతాకినశ్చైవ దదర్శ వివిధాయుధాన్.


దీక్షితాన్ priests, జటిలాన్ ascetics (with matted hair), ముణ్డాన్ with shaven heads,
గోజినామ్బరవాసస: robed in cow-hides, దర్భముష్టిప్రహరణాన్ who held darbha grass, తథా so also, అగ్నికుణ్డాయుధాన్ equipped with tools for fire sacrifice, కూటముద్గరపాణీన్ చ holding iron mallets and hammers in hand, దణ్డాయుధధరానపి holding staff and spikes, ఏకాక్షాన్ single-eyed, ఏకకర్ణాంశ్చ those with a single ear, లమ్బోదరపయోధరాన్ with huge drooping stomachs and breasts, కరాలాన్ frightful, భుగ్నవక్త్రాంశ్చ with stooping faces, వికటాన్ of distorted forms, తథా similarly, వామనాన్ dwarfs, ధన్వినః men armed with bows, ఖడిగనశ్చైవ with swords, శతఘ్నీముసలాయుధాన్ with shataghni or pestle (club tripped with iron) like thunderbolt, పరిఘోత్తమహస్తాంశ్చ iron-bolt like hands, విచిత్రకవచోజ్జ్వలాన్ radiant with wonderful shields, నాతిస్థూలాన్ not very stout, నాతికృశాన్ not very thin, నాతిదీర్ఘాతిహ్రస్వకాన్ not very tall or short, నాతిగౌరాన్ not very fair, నాతికృష్ణాన్ nor very dark, నాతికుబ్జాన్ not so hunch-backed, న వామనాన్ neither very short, విరూపాన్ nor too hideous, బహురూపాంశ్చ in many forms, సురూపాంశ్చ good-looking ones, సువర్చసః of good-looking countenance, ధ్వజీన్ holding banners, పతాకినశ్చైవ and flags, వివిధాయుధాన్ holding several kinds of weapons, దదర్శ saw.

Going around Lanka, Hanuman witnessed all kinds of demons; priests who were performing rituals, ascetics with matted hair, some with shaven heads, and some robed in cow-hides. Some were holding fistfuls of darbha grass (as weapons), others held sacrificial tools (as weapons), some had mallets, some hammers and others had staff and spikes. Some looked frightful with a single eye, some with a single ear, some with drooping stomachs and sagging breasts and in distorted forms. Similarly some dwarfs and some wielding iron weapons, their bodies covered with wonderful shields; some not very tall or short, not stout or thin, not very dark and not with hideous forms or mutilated bodies. Some had good-looking countenances, some were seen holding posts and flags and weapons of several kinds.
శక్తివృక్షాయుధాంశ్చైవ పట్టిసాశనిధారిణః৷৷5.4.20৷৷

క్షేపణీపాశహస్తాంశ్చ దదర్శ స మహాకపిః.

స్రగ్విణస్త్వనులిప్తాంశ్చ వరాభరణభూషితాన్৷৷5.4.21৷৷

నానావేషసమాయుక్తాన్ యథాస్స్వైరగతాన్ బహూన్.

తీక్ష్ణశూలధరాంశ్చైవ వజ్రిణశ్చ మహాబలాన్৷৷5.4.22৷৷


మహాకపిః great monkey, శక్తివృక్షాయుథాశ్చైవ who held shaktis and trees as weapons, పట్టిసాశనిధారిణః who held three pointed spears and missiles, క్షేపణీపాశహస్తాంశ్చ holding
slings from which missiles are thrown, స్రగ్విణః some wearing garlands of flowers, అనులిప్తాంశ్చ smeared with unguents, వరాభరణభూషితాన్ adorned with choicest ornaments, నానావేషసమాయుక్తాన్ dressed in different ways, యథాస్వైరగతాన్ those moving about freely, బహూన్ many, తీక్ష్ణశూలధరాంశ్చైవ holding sharp tridents, వజ్రిణశ్చ armed with thunderbolts like weapons, మహాబలాన్ very strong ones, దదర్శ saw.

The great monkey saw the demons who held shaktis and trees as weapons (Shakti is a lance), some held three-pointed spears, missiles and slings with which missiles are hurled. Some of them wore flower garlands, smeared unguents on their body and were bedecked with choicest ornaments. They were dressed in several ways and many of them moved freely. They were very strong and held sharp tridents and armed with thunderbolt-like weapons.
శతసాహస్రమవ్యగ్రమారక్షం మధ్యమం కపిః.

రక్షోధిపతినిర్దిష్టం దదర్శాన్తఃపురాగ్రతః৷৷5.4.23৷৷


కపిః vanara, అన్తఃపురాగ్రతః in front of the harem, రక్షోధిపతినిర్దిష్టం ordered (stationed) by the lord of demons, శతసాహస్రమ్ one hundred thousand, అవ్యగ్రమ్ vigilant, మధ్యమమ్ midst, ఆరక్షమ్ army, దదర్శ saw.

Hanuman saw in front of the harem one hundred thousand strong, vigilant soldiers of a middle rank ordered by the lord of demons.
స తదా తద్గృహం దృష్ట్వా మహాహాటకతోరణమ్.

రాక్షసేన్ద్రస్య విఖ్యాతమద్రిమూర్ధ్ని ప్రతిష్ఠితమ్৷৷5.4.24৷৷

పుణ్డరీకావతంసాభిః పరిఖాభిరలఙ్కృతమ్.

ప్రాకారావృతమత్యన్తం దదర్శ స మహాకపిః৷৷5.4.25৷৷


సః that, మహాకపిః great monkey, మహాహాటకతోరణమ్ huge archway made of gold, అద్రిమూర్ధ్ని as if touching the sky on the peak of the mountain, ప్రతిష్ఠితమ్ situated, విఖ్యాతమ్ renowned, పుణ్డరీకావతంసాభిః moats with white lotus flowers appearing like ear-ornaments, పరిఖాభిః with moats, అలఙ్కృతమ్ decorated, ప్రాకారావృతమ్ surrounded by a compound wall, రాక్షసేన్ద్రస్య
demon king's, తత్ that, గృహమ్ home, తదా then, దృష్టవా observed, అత్యన్తమ్ all over, దదర్శ saw

The great monkey observed the huge archway of the demon king's palace made of gold situated on top of the mountain as if scraping the sky, circled by moats full of white lotuses appearing as though the moats were decorated with ear-ornaments. The whole city was encircled by a boundary wall.
త్రివిష్టపనిభం దివ్యం దివ్యనాదనినాదితమ్.

వాజిహేషితసఙ్ఘుష్టం నాదితం భూషణైస్తథా৷৷5.4.26৷৷

రథైర్యానైర్విమానైశ్చ తథా హయగజైః శుభైః.

వారణైశ్చ చతుర్థన్తైః శ్వేతాభ్రనిచయోపమైః৷৷5.4.27৷৷

భూషితం రుచిరద్వారం మత్తైశ్చ మృగపక్షిభిః.

రక్షితం సుమహావీర్యైర్యాతుధానైః సహస్రశః.

రాక్షసాధిపతేర్గుప్తమావివేశ మహాకపిః৷৷5.4.28৷৷


మహాకపిః great vanara, త్రివిష్టపనిభమ్ resembling heaven, దివ్యమ్ wonderful, వాజిహేషితసఙ్ఘుష్టమ్ filled with neighing horses, తథా similarly, భూషణైః with ornaments, నాదితమ్ vibrant, రథైః with chariots, యానైః with carriages, విమానైశ్చ with flying chariots, శుభైః with auspicious, హయగజైః horses and elephants, శ్వేతాభ్రనిచయోపమైః appearing like a heap of white clouds, చతుర్థర్న్తై: four tusked, వారణైశ్చ with elephants also, భూషితమ్ ornamented, మత్తై: intoxicated, మృగపక్షిభిః beasts and birds, రుచిరద్వారమ్ a beautiful entrance, సుమహావీర్యైః with demon's of great valour, సహస్రశః in their thousands, యాతుధానైః by demons, రక్షితమ్ guarded, రాక్షసాధిపతేః of the lord of demons, గుప్తమ్ secret, ఆవివేశ entered.

And then the great vanara entered the wonderful mansion that resembled heaven. It was resonating with pleasing sounds of jingling ornaments made more noisy by the neighing of the horses. There were carriages, chariots, flying chariots, horses and elephants. The beautiful entrance was looking splendid with intoxicated animals and birds. That place looked splendid with four-tusked elephants resembling heaps of white clouds. The beautiful entrance was guarded by thousands of valiant demons.
సహేమజామ్బూనదచక్రవాలం మహార్హముక్తామణిభూషితాన్తమ్.

పరార్థ్యకాలాగురుచన్దనాక్తం స రావణాన్తఃపురమావివేశ৷৷5.4.29৷৷


సః he, సహేమ with gold, జామ్బూనదచక్రవాలమ్ walls polished with gold, మహార్హముక్తామణిభూషితాన్తమ్ decorated with precious pearl strings throughout, పరార్థ్యకాలాగురుచన్దనాక్తమ్ sprinkled with best of fragrants of sandal, రావణాన్తఃపురమ్ harem of Ravana, ఆవివేశ entered.

Hanuman entered the harem of Ravana surrounded by walls of gold inlaid with precious pearls and other gems and sprinkled with excellent black agaru and sandal water.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే చతుర్థస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fourth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
