[Sita permits Hanuman to depart]

śrutvā tu vacanaṅ tasya vāyusūnōrmahātmanaḥ.

uvācātmahitaṅ vākyaṅ sītā surasutōpamā৷৷5.40.1৷৷


mahātmanaḥ great soul, tasya his, vāyusūnōḥ son of the Wind-god, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, surasutōpamā like the daughter of gods, sītā Sita, ātmahitam for her benefit, vākyam words, uvāca spoke.

Sita who was like the daughter of the gods heard the son of the Wind-god for her benefit and replied:
tvāṅ dṛṣṭvā priyavaktāraṅ samprahṛṣyāmi vānaraḥ.

ardhasañjātasasyēva vṛṣṭiṅ prāpya vasundharā৷৷5.40.2৷৷


vānara vanara, priyavaktāram who has been speaking pleasing words, tvām you dṛṣṭvā after seeing, ardhasañjātasasyā as half grown, vasundharā earth, vṛṣṭim rain, prāpyēva as if begotten, samprahṛṣyāmi I feel happy.

"O vanara! just as the earth feels happy when the half grown crops receive rain, I feel happy after seeing you. You have been speaking pleasing words
yathā taṅ puruṣavyāghraṅ gātraiśśōkābhikarśitaiḥ.

saṅspṛśēyaṅ sakāmāhaṅ tathā kuru dayāṅ mayi৷৷5.40.3৷৷


sakāmam a passionate lady, aham I, śōkābhikarśitaiḥ emaciated with suffering, gātraiḥ with limbs, taṅ puruṣavyāghram him that tiger among men, yathā as, saṅspṛśēyam I may touch, tathā in that way, mayi in me, dayām kindness, kuru do.

"Be kind to me and act in such a manner that I may embrace my lord passionately with
my body emaciated with grief.
abhijñānaṅ ca rāmasya dadyā harigaṇōttama.

kṣiptāmiṣīkāṅ kākasya kōpādēkākṣiśātanīm৷৷5.40.4৷৷


harigaṇōttama best leader of the vanaras, kōpāt with anger, kṣiptām released, kākasya crow's, ēkākṣiśātanīm blinding one eye, iṣīkām by a blade of grass, rāmasya to Rama, abhijñānam as a token, dadyāḥ give.

"O best leader of vanaras! remind Rama about the incident of the release of a blade of grass in anger blinding one of the eyes of the crow narrated to you.
manaśśilāyāstilakō gaṇḍapārśvē nivēśitaḥ.

tvayā praṇaṣṭē tilakē taṅ kila smartumarhasi৷৷5.40.5৷৷


tilakē when tilaka mark, praṇaṣṭē got erased, tvayā by you, manaśśilāyāḥ with a grind stone, tilakaḥ tilaka (mark on forehead), gaṇḍapārśvē stone near by, nivēśitaḥ kila painted indeed, tam that tilaka, smartum to remember, arhasi you will.

'(Further remind him), 'When my tilaka mark was erased, you painted tilaka with a stone (manas-sita pigment) nearby. O Rama! you should remember that (incident).
sa vīryavānkathaṅ sītāṅ hṛtāṅ samanumanyasē.

vasantīṅ rakṣasāṅ madhyē mahēndravaruṇōpamaḥ৷৷5.40.6৷৷


vīryavān valiant, mahēndravaruṇōpamaḥ comparable to Varuna and Indra, saḥ Rama, hṛtām seized, rakṣasām of rakshasas, madhyē in the midst of, vasantīm dwelling, sītām Sita, katham how, samanumanyasē he will agree.

'Rama! you are like Indra and Varuna in valiance. How are you tolerating Sita seized, dwelling among the demons?
ēṣa cūḍāmaṇirdivyō mayā suparirakṣitaḥ.

ētaṅ dṛṣṭvā prahṛṣyāmi vyasanē tvāmivānagha৷৷5.40.7৷৷


anagha sinless, divyaḥ wonderful, ēṣaḥ this, cūḍāmaṇiḥ Chudamani, mayā of mine, suparirakṣitaḥ carefully safe guared, vyasanē in distress, ētam this one, dṛṣṭvā seeing, tvāmiva like you here, prahṛṣyāmi look at it.

"O sinless Rama! this wonderful Chudamani of mine has been carefully safeguarded. Seeing this is like seeing you when I am in distress.
ēṣa niryātitaśśrīmānmayā tē vārisambhavaḥ.

ataḥ paraṅ na śakṣyāmi jīvituṅ śōkalālasā৷৷5.40.8৷৷


śrīmān glorious one, vārisambhavaḥ born of the sea, ēṣaḥ this, tē to you, niryātitaḥ is returned, śōkalālasā engrossed in grief, ataḥ param beyond this, jīvitum to live, na śakṣyāmi it is not possible for me.

"I am sending you this (Chudamani) born of the sea. O glorious Rama! and now engrossed in grief it is not possible for me to live.
asahyāni ca duḥkhāni vācaśca hṛdayacchidaḥ.

rākṣasīnāṅ sughōrāṇāṅ tvatkṛtē marṣayāmyaham৷৷5.40.9৷৷


aham I, asahyāni unbearable, duḥkhāni grief, sughōrāṇām of dreadful ones, rākṣasīnām of ogresses, hṛdayacchidaḥ piercing my heart, vācaśca utterings, tvatkṛtē your sake, marṣayāmi I am enduring.

"I am tolerating this unbearable grief, and the words of the dreadful ogresses piercing my heart. Only for you.
dhārayiṣyāmi māsaṅ tu jīvitaṅ śatrusūdana.

ūrdhvaṅ māsānna jīviṣyē tvayā hīnā nṛpātmaja৷৷5.40.10৷৷


śatrusūdana O subduer of enemies, nṛpātmaja O prince, māsaṅ tu for one month only, jīvitam life, dhārayiṣyāmi will survive, tvayā you, hīnā separated, māsāt for one month only, ūrdhvam beyond that, na jīviṣyē will not live.

"O subduer of enemies! O prince! I will hold on to life only for a month. I will not survive beyond a month in your absence.
ghōrō rākṣasarājō.yaṅ dṛṣṭiśca na sukhā mayi.

tvāṅ ca śrutvā vipadyantaṅ na jīvēyamahaṅ kṣaṇam৷৷5.40.11৷৷


ayam this, rākṣasarājaḥ demon king, ghōraḥ fearsome, mayi at me, dṛṣṭiḥ look, sukhā moral, na no, tvām you, vipadyantam facing calamities, śrutvā hearing, aham I, kṣaṇam even a moment, na jīvēyam I will not survive.

"The demon king is frightful. He looks at me with immoral (lusty) eyes. I do not wish to live even for a moment after hearing about the adversities (you have faced)."
vaidēhyā vacanaṅ śrutvā karuṇaṅ sāśru bhāṣitam.

athābravīnmahātējā hanumānmārutātmajaḥ৷৷5.40.12৷৷


atha then, mahātējāḥ a brilliant one, mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, sāśru weeping, bhāṣitam words spoken, karuṇam piteously, vaidēhyāḥ Vaidehi's, vacanam words, śrutvā on hearing, abravīt said.

Hearing the words of Sita who was weeping piteously, brilliant Hanuman said this:
tvacchōkavimukhō rāmō dēvi satyēna tē śapē.

rāmē duḥkhābhibhūtē tu lakṣmaṇaḥ paritapyatē৷৷5.40.13৷৷


dēvi O irreproachable lady, rāmaḥ Rama, tvacchōkavimukhaḥ out of grief he is not showing any interest in life, satyēna truly, tē to you, śapē I promise, rāmē when Rama, duḥkhābhibhūtē he is in grief, lakṣmaṇaḥ ca even Lakshmana, paritapyatē is immersed in sorrow.

"O irreproachable lady! I swear by you that Rama has grown averse to everything out of grief of separation from you. When Rama is in grief even Lakshmana gets immersed in sorrow.
kathañcidbhavatī dṛṣṭā na kālaḥ pariśōcitum.

imaṅ muhūrtaṅ duḥkhānāmantaṅ drakṣyasi bhāmini৷৷5.40.14৷৷


kathañcit somehow, bhavatī you, dṛṣṭā seen, pariśōcitam to worry, kālaḥ time, na not, bhāmini a beautiful lady, imam this, muhūrtam moment, duḥkhānām for grief, antam end, drakṣyasi you can see.

"O beautiful lady! somehow I could meet you. This is not the time to worry about. You will see the end of suffering at this very moment.
tāvubhau puruṣavyāghrau rājaputrāvarindamau.

tvaddarśanakṛtōtsāhau laṅkāṅ bhasmīkariṣyataḥ৷৷5.40.15৷৷


puruṣavyāghrau tigers among men, arindamau crusher of enemies, tvaddarśanakṛtōtsāhau very determined to see you, ubhau both, tau rājaputrau both the princes, laṅkām Lanka, bhasmīkariṣyataḥ will reduce to ashes.

"Both the princes are tigers among men and crushers of enemies. They are determined to see you, and will reduce Lanka to ashes.
hattvā ca samarē krūraṅ rāvaṇaṅ sahabāndhavam.

rāghavau tvāṅ viśālākṣi svāṅ purīṅ prāpayiṣyataḥ৷৷5.40.16৷৷


viśālākṣi large-eyed one, rāghavaḥ Rama, samarē in war, sahabāndhavam along with relatives, krūram vile, rāvaṇam Ravana, hatvā after killing, svāṅ purīṅ prati to his own city, tvām you, prāpayiṣyataḥ will
take you back.

"O large-eyed lady! Killing in war the vile Ravana, the demon king and all his relatives, Rama would take you back to his own city৷৷
yattu rāmō vijānīyādabhijñānamaninditē.

prītisañjananaṅ tasya bhūyastvaṅ dātumarhasi৷৷5.40.17৷৷


aninditē blameless lady, rāmaḥ Rama, yat that which, abhijñānam knows, vijānīyāt to identify you, tasya your, prītisañjananam that which makes him more happy, bhūyaḥ one more, tvam you, dātum may give, arhasi is proper.

"O unimpeachable lady! give one more identification which would make him more happy".
sābravīddattamēvēti mayābhijñānamuttamam.

ētadēva hi rāmasya dṛṣṭvā matkēśabhūṣaṇam৷৷5.40.18৷৷

śraddhēyaṅ hanumanvākyaṅ tava vīra bhaviṣyati.


mayā mine, uttamam best, abhijñānam identification, dattamēva already given, iti this, sā she, abravīt said, vīra hero, hanumān Hanuman, ētat all this, matkēśabhūṣaṇam my jewel for the hair, dṛṣṭvā seeing, tava his, vākyam words, rāmasya Rama's, śraddhēyam what you tell, bhaviṣyati will believe.

"I have already given the best identification. When you hand this jewel used on my hair to him, he will believe what you tell him".
sa taṅ maṇivaraṅ gṛhya śrīmānplavagasattamaḥ৷৷5.40.19৷৷

praṇamya śirasā dēvīṅ gamanāyōpacakramē.


śrīmān illustrious one, saḥ he, plavagasattamaḥ best of vanaras, maṇivaram best jewel, gṛhya holding,
dēvīm to Sita, śirasā by his head, praṇamya prostrated, gamanāya to depart, upacakramē started.

The illustrious vanara held the ornament, prostrated to Sita and prepared to depart.
tamutpātakṛtōtsāhamavēkṣya haripuṅgavam৷৷5.40.20৷৷

vardhamānaṅ mahāvēgamuvāca janakātmajā.

aśrupūrṇamukhī dīnā bāṣpagadgadayā girā৷৷5.40.21৷৷


janakātmajā Janaka's daughter, utpātakṛtōtsāham risen up eager to leap, vardhamānam enlarging, mahāvēgam very swiftly, taṅ haripuṅgavam him the chief of vanaras, āvēkṣya looking at him, aśrupūrṇamukhī her face filled with tears, dīnā pitiably, bāṣpagadgadayā throat choked with tears, girā with these words, uvāca spoke.

Seeing Hanuman eager to leap, enlarging his body quickly, she appeared pitiable with her face filled with tears and throat choked.
hanumansiṅhasaṅkāśau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau.

sugrīvaṅ ca sahāmātyaṅ sarvān brūyāhyanāmayam৷৷5.40.22৷৷


hanumān Hanuman, bhrātarau brothers, siṅhasaṅkāśau both comparable to lion, rāmalakṣmaṇau to Rama and Lakshmana, sahāmātyam along with ministers, sugrīvaṅ ca and Sugriva, sarvān to all, anāmayam well-being, brūyāḥ convey.

"O Hanuman! to the lion-like brothers Rama and Lakshmana, to Sugriva including his ministers and to every one convey my good wishes.
yathā ca sa mahābāhurmāṅ tārayati rāghavaḥ.

asmāddu:khāmbusamrōdhāttvaṅ samādhātumarhasi৷৷5.40.23৷৷


mahābāhuḥ mighty-armed, saḥ rāghavaḥ that Rama, asmāt from this, duḥkhāmbusaṅśēdhāt from this ocean of sorrow, yathā in such a way, tārayati will help to cross, tvam you, samādhātum to
make efforts, arhasi it is proper.

"You should make efforts in such a manner that the mighty-armed Rama will help me in crossing the cean of sorrow.
imaṅ ca tīvraṅ mama śōkavēgaṅ rakṣōbhirēbhiḥ paribhartsanaṅ ca.

brūyāstu rāmasya gatassamīpam śivaśca tē.dhvā.stu haripravīra৷৷5.40.24৷৷


haripravīra foremost vanara, rāmasya to Rama, samīpam near, gataḥ after going, mama my, imam this, tīvram intense, śōkavēgam of grief, ēbhiḥ by these, rakṣōbhiḥ by the rakshasas, paribhartsanaṅ ca threats also, brūyāḥ you nararte, tē to you, adhvā journey, śivaḥ happy, astu let it be.

"Foremost vanara! tell Rama about my intense grief as well as the threats of the demons. May your journey be happy.
sa rājaputryrāprativēditārthaḥ kapiḥ kṛtārthaḥ parihṛṣṭacētāḥ.

alpāvaśēṣaṅ prasamīkṣya kāryaṅ diśaṅ hyudīcīṅ manasā jagāma৷৷5.40.25৷৷


saḥ that, kapiḥ vanara, rājaputryā by the princess, prativēditārthaḥ understood the message, kṛtārthaḥ accomplished, parihṛṣṭacētāḥ delighted at heart, kāryam task, alpāvaśēṣam a small left over, prasamīkṣya after considering, udīcīm north, diśam direction, manasā mentally, jagama reached.

Hanuman understood the message of princess Sita and felt delighted at heart at his accomplishment. Considering the small task yet to be accomplished he reached the northern shore mentally (He thought of Rama who waited in Kishkinda which is in the northern direction).
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē catvāriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fortieth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
