மஹாத்மநஃ great soul, தஸ்ய his, வாயுஸூநோஃ son of the Wind-god, வசநம் words, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, ஸுரஸுதோபமா like the daughter of gods, ஸீதா Sita, ஆத்மஹிதம் for her benefit, வாக்யம் words, உவாச spoke.
Sita who was like the daughter of the gods heard the son of the Wind-god for her benefit and replied:
த்வாஂ தரிஷ்ட்வா ப்ரியவக்தாரஂ ஸம்ப்ரஹரிஷ்யாமி வாநரஃ.
அர்தஸஞ்ஜாதஸஸ்யேவ வரிஷ்டிஂ ப்ராப்ய வஸுந்தரா৷৷5.40.2৷৷

வாநர vanara, ப்ரியவக்தாரம் who has been speaking pleasing words, த்வாம் you தரிஷ்ட்வா after seeing, அர்தஸஞ்ஜாதஸஸ்யா as half grown, வஸுந்தரா earth, வரிஷ்டிம் rain, ப்ராப்யேவ as if begotten, ஸம்ப்ரஹரிஷ்யாமி I feel happy.
"O vanara! just as the earth feels happy when the half grown crops receive rain, I feel happy after seeing you. You have been speaking pleasing words

ஸகாமம் a passionate lady, அஹம் I, ஷோகாபிகர்ஷிதைஃ emaciated with suffering, காத்ரைஃ with limbs, தஂ புருஷவ்யாக்ரம் him that tiger among men, யதா as, ஸஂஸ்பரிஷேயம் I may touch, ததா in that way, மயி in me, தயாம் kindness, குரு do.
"Be kind to me and act in such a manner that I may embrace my lord passionately with
my body emaciated with grief.

"O best leader of vanaras! remind Rama about the incident of the release of a blade of grass in anger blinding one of the eyes of the crow narrated to you.
மநஷ்ஷிலாயாஸ்திலகோ கண்டபார்ஷ்வே நிவேஷிதஃ.
த்வயா ப்ரணஷ்டே திலகே தஂ கில ஸ்மர்துமர்ஹஸி৷৷5.40.5৷৷

திலகே when tilaka mark, ப்ரணஷ்டே got erased, த்வயா by you, மநஷ்ஷிலாயாஃ with a grind stone, திலகஃ tilaka (mark on forehead), கண்டபார்ஷ்வே stone near by, நிவேஷிதஃ கில painted indeed, தம் that tilaka, ஸ்மர்தும் to remember, அர்ஹஸி you will.
'(Further remind him), 'When my tilaka mark was erased, you painted tilaka with a stone (manas-sita pigment) nearby. O Rama! you should remember that (incident).
ஸ வீர்யவாந்கதஂ ஸீதாஂ ஹரிதாஂ ஸமநுமந்யஸே.

'Rama! you are like Indra and Varuna in valiance. How are you tolerating Sita seized, dwelling among the demons?

அநக sinless, திவ்யஃ wonderful, ஏஷஃ this, சூடாமணிஃ Chudamani, மயா of mine, ஸுபரிரக்ஷிதஃ carefully safe guared, வ்யஸநே in distress, ஏதம் this one, தரிஷ்ட்வா seeing, த்வாமிவ like you here, ப்ரஹரிஷ்யாமி look at it.
"O sinless Rama! this wonderful Chudamani of mine has been carefully safeguarded. Seeing this is like seeing you when I am in distress.

ஷ்ரீமாந் glorious one, வாரிஸம்பவஃ born of the sea, ஏஷஃ this, தே to you, நிர்யாதிதஃ is returned, ஷோகலாலஸா engrossed in grief, அதஃ பரம் beyond this, ஜீவிதும் to live, ந ஷக்ஷ்யாமி it is not possible for me.
"I am sending you this (Chudamani) born of the sea. O glorious Rama! and now engrossed in grief it is not possible for me to live.
அஸஹ்யாநி ச துஃகாநி வாசஷ்ச ஹரிதயச்சிதஃ.

அஹம் I, அஸஹ்யாநி unbearable, துஃகாநி grief, ஸுகோராணாம் of dreadful ones, ராக்ஷஸீநாம் of ogresses, ஹரிதயச்சிதஃ piercing my heart, வாசஷ்ச utterings, த்வத்கரிதே your sake, மர்ஷயாமி I am enduring.
"I am tolerating this unbearable grief, and the words of the dreadful ogresses piercing my heart. Only for you.
தாரயிஷ்யாமி மாஸஂ து ஜீவிதஂ ஷத்ருஸூதந.
ஊர்த்வஂ மாஸாந்ந ஜீவிஷ்யே த்வயா ஹீநா நரிபாத்மஜ৷৷5.40.10৷৷

ஷத்ருஸூதந O subduer of enemies, நரிபாத்மஜ O prince, மாஸஂ து for one month only, ஜீவிதம் life, தாரயிஷ்யாமி will survive, த்வயா you, ஹீநா separated, மாஸாத் for one month only, ஊர்த்வம் beyond that, ந ஜீவிஷ்யே will not live.
"O subduer of enemies! O prince! I will hold on to life only for a month. I will not survive beyond a month in your absence.
கோரோ ராக்ஷஸராஜோயஂ தரிஷ்டிஷ்ச ந ஸுகா மயி.
த்வாஂ ச ஷ்ருத்வா விபத்யந்தஂ ந ஜீவேயமஹஂ க்ஷணம்৷৷5.40.11৷৷

அயம் this, ராக்ஷஸராஜஃ demon king, கோரஃ fearsome, மயி at me, தரிஷ்டிஃ look, ஸுகா moral, ந no, த்வாம் you, விபத்யந்தம் facing calamities, ஷ்ருத்வா hearing, அஹம் I, க்ஷணம் even a moment, ந ஜீவேயம் I will not survive.
"The demon king is frightful. He looks at me with immoral (lusty) eyes. I do not wish to live even for a moment after hearing about the adversities (you have faced)."
வைதேஹ்யா வசநஂ ஷ்ருத்வா கருணஂ ஸாஷ்ரு பாஷிதம்.

அத then, மஹாதேஜாஃ a brilliant one, மாருதாத்மஜஃ son of the Wind-god, ஹநுமாந் Hanuman, ஸாஷ்ரு weeping, பாஷிதம் words spoken, கருணம் piteously, வைதேஹ்யாஃ Vaidehi's, வசநம் words, ஷ்ருத்வா on hearing, அப்ரவீத் said.
Hearing the words of Sita who was weeping piteously, brilliant Hanuman said this:
த்வச்சோகவிமுகோ ராமோ தேவி ஸத்யேந தே ஷபே.
ராமே துஃகாபிபூதே து லக்ஷ்மணஃ பரிதப்யதே৷৷5.40.13৷৷

தேவி O irreproachable lady, ராமஃ Rama, த்வச்சோகவிமுகஃ out of grief he is not showing any interest in life, ஸத்யேந truly, தே to you, ஷபே I promise, ராமே when Rama, துஃகாபிபூதே he is in grief, லக்ஷ்மணஃ ச even Lakshmana, பரிதப்யதே is immersed in sorrow.
"O irreproachable lady! I swear by you that Rama has grown averse to everything out of grief of separation from you. When Rama is in grief even Lakshmana gets immersed in sorrow.
கதஞ்சித்பவதீ தரிஷ்டா ந காலஃ பரிஷோசிதும்.
இமஂ முஹூர்தஂ துஃகாநாமந்தஂ த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி பாமிநி৷৷5.40.14৷৷

கதஞ்சித் somehow, பவதீ you, தரிஷ்டா seen, பரிஷோசிதம் to worry, காலஃ time, ந not, பாமிநி a beautiful lady, இமம் this, முஹூர்தம் moment, துஃகாநாம் for grief, அந்தம் end, த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி you can see.
"O beautiful lady! somehow I could meet you. This is not the time to worry about. You will see the end of suffering at this very moment.
தாவுபௌ புருஷவ்யாக்ரௌ ராஜபுத்ராவரிந்தமௌ.
த்வத்தர்ஷநகரிதோத்ஸாஹௌ லங்காஂ பஸ்மீகரிஷ்யதஃ৷৷5.40.15৷৷

புருஷவ்யாக்ரௌ tigers among men, அரிந்தமௌ crusher of enemies, த்வத்தர்ஷநகரிதோத்ஸாஹௌ very determined to see you, உபௌ both, தௌ ராஜபுத்ரௌ both the princes, லங்காம் Lanka, பஸ்மீகரிஷ்யதஃ will reduce to ashes.
"Both the princes are tigers among men and crushers of enemies. They are determined to see you, and will reduce Lanka to ashes.
ஹத்த்வா ச ஸமரே க்ரூரஂ ராவணஂ ஸஹபாந்தவம்.
ராகவௌ த்வாஂ விஷாலாக்ஷி ஸ்வாஂ புரீஂ ப்ராபயிஷ்யதஃ৷৷5.40.16৷৷

விஷாலாக்ஷி large-eyed one, ராகவஃ Rama, ஸமரே in war, ஸஹபாந்தவம் along with relatives, க்ரூரம் vile, ராவணம் Ravana, ஹத்வா after killing, ஸ்வாஂ புரீஂ ப்ரதி to his own city, த்வாம் you, ப்ராபயிஷ்யதஃ will
take you back.
"O large-eyed lady! Killing in war the vile Ravana, the demon king and all his relatives, Rama would take you back to his own city৷৷
யத்து ராமோ விஜாநீயாதபிஜ்ஞாநமநிந்திதே.
ப்ரீதிஸஞ்ஜநநஂ தஸ்ய பூயஸ்த்வஂ தாதுமர்ஹஸி৷৷5.40.17৷৷

அநிந்திதே blameless lady, ராமஃ Rama, யத் that which, அபிஜ்ஞாநம் knows, விஜாநீயாத் to identify you, தஸ்ய your, ப்ரீதிஸஞ்ஜநநம் that which makes him more happy, பூயஃ one more, த்வம் you, தாதும் may give, அர்ஹஸி is proper.
"O unimpeachable lady! give one more identification which would make him more happy".
ஸாப்ரவீத்தத்தமேவேதி மயாபிஜ்ஞாநமுத்தமம்.
ஏததேவ ஹி ராமஸ்ய தரிஷ்ட்வா மத்கேஷபூஷணம்৷৷5.40.18৷৷
ஷ்ரத்தேயஂ ஹநுமந்வாக்யஂ தவ வீர பவிஷ்யதி.

மயா mine, உத்தமம் best, அபிஜ்ஞாநம் identification, தத்தமேவ already given, இதி this, ஸா she, அப்ரவீத் said, வீர hero, ஹநுமாந் Hanuman, ஏதத் all this, மத்கேஷபூஷணம் my jewel for the hair, தரிஷ்ட்வா seeing, தவ his, வாக்யம் words, ராமஸ்ய Rama's, ஷ்ரத்தேயம் what you tell, பவிஷ்யதி will believe.
"I have already given the best identification. When you hand this jewel used on my hair to him, he will believe what you tell him".

தேவீம் to Sita, ஷிரஸா by his head, ப்ரணம்ய prostrated, கமநாய to depart, உபசக்ரமே started.
The illustrious vanara held the ornament, prostrated to Sita and prepared to depart.

ஜநகாத்மஜா Janaka's daughter, உத்பாதகரிதோத்ஸாஹம் risen up eager to leap, வர்தமாநம் enlarging, மஹாவேகம் very swiftly, தஂ ஹரிபுங்கவம் him the chief of vanaras, ஆவேக்ஷ்ய looking at him, அஷ்ருபூர்ணமுகீ her face filled with tears, தீநா pitiably, பாஷ்பகத்கதயா throat choked with tears, கிரா with these words, உவாச spoke.
Seeing Hanuman eager to leap, enlarging his body quickly, she appeared pitiable with her face filled with tears and throat choked.
ஹநுமந்ஸிஂஹஸங்காஷௌ ப்ராதரௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ.
ஸுக்ரீவஂ ச ஸஹாமாத்யஂ ஸர்வாந் ப்ரூயாஹ்யநாமயம்৷৷5.40.22৷৷

ஹநுமாந் Hanuman, ப்ராதரௌ brothers, ஸிஂஹஸங்காஷௌ both comparable to lion, ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ to Rama and Lakshmana, ஸஹாமாத்யம் along with ministers, ஸுக்ரீவஂ ச and Sugriva, ஸர்வாந் to all, அநாமயம் well-being, ப்ரூயாஃ convey.
"O Hanuman! to the lion-like brothers Rama and Lakshmana, to Sugriva including his ministers and to every one convey my good wishes.
யதா ச ஸ மஹாபாஹுர்மாஂ தாரயதி ராகவஃ.
அஸ்மாத்து:காம்புஸம்ரோதாத்த்வஂ ஸமாதாதுமர்ஹஸி৷৷5.40.23৷৷

make efforts, அர்ஹஸி it is proper.
"You should make efforts in such a manner that the mighty-armed Rama will help me in crossing the cean of sorrow.

ஹரிப்ரவீர foremost vanara, ராமஸ்ய to Rama, ஸமீபம் near, கதஃ after going, மம my, இமம் this, தீவ்ரம் intense, ஷோகவேகம் of grief, ஏபிஃ by these, ரக்ஷோபிஃ by the rakshasas, பரிபர்த்ஸநஂ ச threats also, ப்ரூயாஃ you nararte, தே to you, அத்வா journey, ஷிவஃ happy, அஸ்து let it be.
"Foremost vanara! tell Rama about my intense grief as well as the threats of the demons. May your journey be happy.
ஸ ராஜபுத்ர்ய்ராப்ரதிவேதிதார்தஃ கபிஃ கரிதார்தஃ பரிஹரிஷ்டசேதாஃ.
அல்பாவஷேஷஂ ப்ரஸமீக்ஷ்ய கார்யஂ திஷஂ ஹ்யுதீசீஂ மநஸா ஜகாம৷৷5.40.25৷৷

ஸஃ that, கபிஃ vanara, ராஜபுத்ர்யா by the princess, ப்ரதிவேதிதார்தஃ understood the message, கரிதார்தஃ accomplished, பரிஹரிஷ்டசேதாஃ delighted at heart, கார்யம் task, அல்பாவஷேஷம் a small left over, ப்ரஸமீக்ஷ்ய after considering, உதீசீம் north, திஷம் direction, மநஸா mentally, ஜகம reached.
Hanuman understood the message of princess Sita and felt delighted at heart at his accomplishment. Considering the small task yet to be accomplished he reached the northern shore mentally (He thought of Rama who waited in Kishkinda which is in the northern direction).
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே ஸுந்தரகாண்டே சத்வாரிஂஷஸ்ஸர்கஃ৷৷
Thus ends the fortieth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
