[Sita permits Hanuman to depart]
శ్రుత్వా తు వచనం తస్య వాయుసూనోర్మహాత్మనః.

మహాత్మనః great soul, తస్య his, వాయుసూనోః son of the Wind-god, వచనమ్ words, శ్రుత్వా having heard, సురసుతోపమా like the daughter of gods, సీతా Sita, ఆత్మహితమ్ for her benefit, వాక్యమ్ words, ఉవాచ spoke.
Sita who was like the daughter of the gods heard the son of the Wind-god for her benefit and replied:
త్వాం దృష్ట్వా ప్రియవక్తారం సమ్ప్రహృష్యామి వానరః.
అర్ధసఞ్జాతసస్యేవ వృష్టిం ప్రాప్య వసున్ధరా৷৷5.40.2৷৷

వానర vanara, ప్రియవక్తారమ్ who has been speaking pleasing words, త్వామ్ you దృష్ట్వా after seeing, అర్ధసఞ్జాతసస్యా as half grown, వసున్ధరా earth, వృష్టిమ్ rain, ప్రాప్యేవ as if begotten, సమ్ప్రహృష్యామి I feel happy.
"O vanara! just as the earth feels happy when the half grown crops receive rain, I feel happy after seeing you. You have been speaking pleasing words
యథా తం పురుషవ్యాఘ్రం గాత్రైశ్శోకాభికర్శితైః.
సంస్పృశేయం సకామాహం తథా కురు దయాం మయి৷৷5.40.3৷৷

సకామమ్ a passionate lady, అహమ్ I, శోకాభికర్శితైః emaciated with suffering, గాత్రైః with limbs, తం పురుషవ్యాఘ్రమ్ him that tiger among men, యథా as, సంస్పృశేయమ్ I may touch, తథా in that way, మయి in me, దయామ్ kindness, కురు do.
"Be kind to me and act in such a manner that I may embrace my lord passionately with
my body emaciated with grief.
అభిజ్ఞానం చ రామస్య దద్యా హరిగణోత్తమ.
క్షిప్తామిషీకాం కాకస్య కోపాదేకాక్షిశాతనీమ్৷৷5.40.4৷৷

హరిగణోత్తమ best leader of the vanaras, కోపాత్ with anger, క్షిప్తామ్ released, కాకస్య crow's, ఏకాక్షిశాతనీమ్ blinding one eye, ఇషీకామ్ by a blade of grass, రామస్య to Rama, అభిజ్ఞానమ్ as a token, దద్యాః give.
"O best leader of vanaras! remind Rama about the incident of the release of a blade of grass in anger blinding one of the eyes of the crow narrated to you.
మనశ్శిలాయాస్తిలకో గణ్డపార్శ్వే నివేశితః.
త్వయా ప్రణష్టే తిలకే తం కిల స్మర్తుమర్హసి৷৷5.40.5৷৷

తిలకే when tilaka mark, ప్రణష్టే got erased, త్వయా by you, మనశ్శిలాయాః with a grind stone, తిలకః tilaka (mark on forehead), గణ్డపార్శ్వే stone near by, నివేశితః కిల painted indeed, తమ్ that tilaka, స్మర్తుమ్ to remember, అర్హసి you will.
'(Further remind him), 'When my tilaka mark was erased, you painted tilaka with a stone (manas-sita pigment) nearby. O Rama! you should remember that (incident).
స వీర్యవాన్కథం సీతాం హృతాం సమనుమన్యసే.
వసన్తీం రక్షసాం మధ్యే మహేన్ద్రవరుణోపమః৷৷5.40.6৷৷

వీర్యవాన్ valiant, మహేన్ద్రవరుణోపమః comparable to Varuna and Indra, సః Rama, హృతామ్ seized, రక్షసామ్ of rakshasas, మధ్యే in the midst of, వసన్తీమ్ dwelling, సీతామ్ Sita, కథమ్ how, సమనుమన్యసే he will agree.
'Rama! you are like Indra and Varuna in valiance. How are you tolerating Sita seized, dwelling among the demons?
ఏష చూడామణిర్దివ్యో మయా సుపరిరక్షితః.
ఏతం దృష్ట్వా ప్రహృష్యామి వ్యసనే త్వామివానఘ৷৷5.40.7৷৷

అనఘ sinless, దివ్యః wonderful, ఏషః this, చూడామణిః Chudamani, మయా of mine, సుపరిరక్షితః carefully safe guared, వ్యసనే in distress, ఏతమ్ this one, దృష్ట్వా seeing, త్వామివ like you here, ప్రహృష్యామి look at it.
"O sinless Rama! this wonderful Chudamani of mine has been carefully safeguarded. Seeing this is like seeing you when I am in distress.
ఏష నిర్యాతితశ్శ్రీమాన్మయా తే వారిసమ్భవః.
అతః పరం న శక్ష్యామి జీవితుం శోకలాలసా৷৷5.40.8৷৷

శ్రీమాన్ glorious one, వారిసమ్భవః born of the sea, ఏషః this, తే to you, నిర్యాతితః is returned, శోకలాలసా engrossed in grief, అతః పరమ్ beyond this, జీవితుమ్ to live, న శక్ష్యామి it is not possible for me.
"I am sending you this (Chudamani) born of the sea. O glorious Rama! and now engrossed in grief it is not possible for me to live.
అసహ్యాని చ దుఃఖాని వాచశ్చ హృదయచ్ఛిదః.
రాక్షసీనాం సుఘోరాణాం త్వత్కృతే మర్షయామ్యహమ్৷৷5.40.9৷৷

అహమ్ I, అసహ్యాని unbearable, దుఃఖాని grief, సుఘోరాణామ్ of dreadful ones, రాక్షసీనామ్ of ogresses, హృదయచ్ఛిదః piercing my heart, వాచశ్చ utterings, త్వత్కృతే your sake, మర్షయామి I am enduring.
"I am tolerating this unbearable grief, and the words of the dreadful ogresses piercing my heart. Only for you.
ధారయిష్యామి మాసం తు జీవితం శత్రుసూదన.
ఊర్ధ్వం మాసాన్న జీవిష్యే త్వయా హీనా నృపాత్మజ৷৷5.40.10৷৷

శత్రుసూదన O subduer of enemies, నృపాత్మజ O prince, మాసం తు for one month only, జీవితమ్ life, ధారయిష్యామి will survive, త్వయా you, హీనా separated, మాసాత్ for one month only, ఊర్ధ్వమ్ beyond that, న జీవిష్యే will not live.
"O subduer of enemies! O prince! I will hold on to life only for a month. I will not survive beyond a month in your absence.
ఘోరో రాక్షసరాజోయం దృష్టిశ్చ న సుఖా మయి.
త్వాం చ శ్రుత్వా విపద్యన్తం న జీవేయమహం క్షణమ్৷৷5.40.11৷৷

అయమ్ this, రాక్షసరాజః demon king, ఘోరః fearsome, మయి at me, దృష్టిః look, సుఖా moral, న no, త్వామ్ you, విపద్యన్తమ్ facing calamities, శ్రుత్వా hearing, అహమ్ I, క్షణమ్ even a moment, న జీవేయమ్ I will not survive.
"The demon king is frightful. He looks at me with immoral (lusty) eyes. I do not wish to live even for a moment after hearing about the adversities (you have faced)."
వైదేహ్యా వచనం శ్రుత్వా కరుణం సాశ్రు భాషితమ్.
అథాబ్రవీన్మహాతేజా హనుమాన్మారుతాత్మజః৷৷5.40.12৷৷

అథ then, మహాతేజాః a brilliant one, మారుతాత్మజః son of the Wind-god, హనుమాన్ Hanuman, సాశ్రు weeping, భాషితమ్ words spoken, కరుణమ్ piteously, వైదేహ్యాః Vaidehi's, వచనమ్ words, శ్రుత్వా on hearing, అబ్రవీత్ said.
Hearing the words of Sita who was weeping piteously, brilliant Hanuman said this:
త్వచ్ఛోకవిముఖో రామో దేవి సత్యేన తే శపే.
రామే దుఃఖాభిభూతే తు లక్ష్మణః పరితప్యతే৷৷5.40.13৷৷

దేవి O irreproachable lady, రామః Rama, త్వచ్ఛోకవిముఖః out of grief he is not showing any interest in life, సత్యేన truly, తే to you, శపే I promise, రామే when Rama, దుఃఖాభిభూతే he is in grief, లక్ష్మణః చ even Lakshmana, పరితప్యతే is immersed in sorrow.
"O irreproachable lady! I swear by you that Rama has grown averse to everything out of grief of separation from you. When Rama is in grief even Lakshmana gets immersed in sorrow.
కథఞ్చిద్భవతీ దృష్టా న కాలః పరిశోచితుమ్.
ఇమం ముహూర్తం దుఃఖానామన్తం ద్రక్ష్యసి భామిని৷৷5.40.14৷৷

కథఞ్చిత్ somehow, భవతీ you, దృష్టా seen, పరిశోచితమ్ to worry, కాలః time, న not, భామిని a beautiful lady, ఇమమ్ this, ముహూర్తమ్ moment, దుఃఖానామ్ for grief, అన్తమ్ end, ద్రక్ష్యసి you can see.
"O beautiful lady! somehow I could meet you. This is not the time to worry about. You will see the end of suffering at this very moment.
తావుభౌ పురుషవ్యాఘ్రౌ రాజపుత్రావరిన్దమౌ.
త్వద్దర్శనకృతోత్సాహౌ లఙ్కాం భస్మీకరిష్యతః৷৷5.40.15৷৷

పురుషవ్యాఘ్రౌ tigers among men, అరిన్దమౌ crusher of enemies, త్వద్దర్శనకృతోత్సాహౌ very determined to see you, ఉభౌ both, తౌ రాజపుత్రౌ both the princes, లఙ్కామ్ Lanka, భస్మీకరిష్యతః will reduce to ashes.
"Both the princes are tigers among men and crushers of enemies. They are determined to see you, and will reduce Lanka to ashes.
హత్త్వా చ సమరే క్రూరం రావణం సహబాన్ధవమ్.
రాఘవౌ త్వాం విశాలాక్షి స్వాం పురీం ప్రాపయిష్యతః৷৷5.40.16৷৷

విశాలాక్షి large-eyed one, రాఘవః Rama, సమరే in war, సహబాన్ధవమ్ along with relatives, క్రూరమ్ vile, రావణమ్ Ravana, హత్వా after killing, స్వాం పురీం ప్రతి to his own city, త్వామ్ you, ప్రాపయిష్యతః will
take you back.
"O large-eyed lady! Killing in war the vile Ravana, the demon king and all his relatives, Rama would take you back to his own city৷৷
యత్తు రామో విజానీయాదభిజ్ఞానమనిన్దితే.
ప్రీతిసఞ్జననం తస్య భూయస్త్వం దాతుమర్హసి৷৷5.40.17৷৷

అనిన్దితే blameless lady, రామః Rama, యత్ that which, అభిజ్ఞానమ్ knows, విజానీయాత్ to identify you, తస్య your, ప్రీతిసఞ్జననమ్ that which makes him more happy, భూయః one more, త్వమ్ you, దాతుమ్ may give, అర్హసి is proper.
"O unimpeachable lady! give one more identification which would make him more happy".
సాబ్రవీద్దత్తమేవేతి మయాభిజ్ఞానముత్తమమ్.
ఏతదేవ హి రామస్య దృష్ట్వా మత్కేశభూషణమ్৷৷5.40.18৷৷
శ్రద్ధేయం హనుమన్వాక్యం తవ వీర భవిష్యతి.

మయా mine, ఉత్తమమ్ best, అభిజ్ఞానమ్ identification, దత్తమేవ already given, ఇతి this, సా she, అబ్రవీత్ said, వీర hero, హనుమాన్ Hanuman, ఏతత్ all this, మత్కేశభూషణమ్ my jewel for the hair, దృష్ట్వా seeing, తవ his, వాక్యమ్ words, రామస్య Rama's, శ్రద్ధేయమ్ what you tell, భవిష్యతి will believe.
"I have already given the best identification. When you hand this jewel used on my hair to him, he will believe what you tell him".
స తం మణివరం గృహ్య శ్రీమాన్ప్లవగసత్తమః৷৷5.40.19৷৷
ప్రణమ్య శిరసా దేవీం గమనాయోపచక్రమే.

శ్రీమాన్ illustrious one, సః he, ప్లవగసత్తమః best of vanaras, మణివరమ్ best jewel, గృహ్య holding,
దేవీమ్ to Sita, శిరసా by his head, ప్రణమ్య prostrated, గమనాయ to depart, ఉపచక్రమే started.
The illustrious vanara held the ornament, prostrated to Sita and prepared to depart.
తముత్పాతకృతోత్సాహమవేక్ష్య హరిపుఙ్గవమ్৷৷5.40.20৷৷
వర్ధమానం మహావేగమువాచ జనకాత్మజా.
అశ్రుపూర్ణముఖీ దీనా బాష్పగద్గదయా గిరా৷৷5.40.21৷৷

జనకాత్మజా Janaka's daughter, ఉత్పాతకృతోత్సాహమ్ risen up eager to leap, వర్ధమానమ్ enlarging, మహావేగమ్ very swiftly, తం హరిపుఙ్గవమ్ him the chief of vanaras, ఆవేక్ష్య looking at him, అశ్రుపూర్ణముఖీ her face filled with tears, దీనా pitiably, బాష్పగద్గదయా throat choked with tears, గిరా with these words, ఉవాచ spoke.
Seeing Hanuman eager to leap, enlarging his body quickly, she appeared pitiable with her face filled with tears and throat choked.
హనుమన్సింహసఙ్కాశౌ భ్రాతరౌ రామలక్ష్మణౌ.
సుగ్రీవం చ సహామాత్యం సర్వాన్ బ్రూయాహ్యనామయమ్৷৷5.40.22৷৷
సుగ్రీవం చ సహామాత్యం సర్వాన్ బ్రూయాహ్యనామయమ్৷৷5.40.22৷৷
హనుమాన్ Hanuman, భ్రాతరౌ brothers, సింహసఙ్కాశౌ both comparable to lion, రామలక్ష్మణౌ to Rama and Lakshmana, సహామాత్యమ్ along with ministers, సుగ్రీవం చ and Sugriva, సర్వాన్ to all, అనామయమ్ well-being, బ్రూయాః convey.
"O Hanuman! to the lion-like brothers Rama and Lakshmana, to Sugriva including his ministers and to every one convey my good wishes.
యథా చ స మహాబాహుర్మాం తారయతి రాఘవః.
అస్మాద్దు:ఖామ్బుసమ్రోధాత్త్వం సమాధాతుమర్హసి৷৷5.40.23৷৷

మహాబాహుః mighty-armed, సః రాఘవః that Rama, అస్మాత్ from this, దుఃఖామ్బుసంశేధాత్ from this ocean of sorrow, యథా in such a way, తారయతి will help to cross, త్వమ్ you, సమాధాతుమ్ to
make efforts, అర్హసి it is proper.
"You should make efforts in such a manner that the mighty-armed Rama will help me in crossing the cean of sorrow.
ఇమం చ తీవ్రం మమ శోకవేగం రక్షోభిరేభిః పరిభర్త్సనం చ.
బ్రూయాస్తు రామస్య గతస్సమీపమ్ శివశ్చ తేధ్వాస్తు హరిప్రవీర৷৷5.40.24৷৷

హరిప్రవీర foremost vanara, రామస్య to Rama, సమీపమ్ near, గతః after going, మమ my, ఇమమ్ this, తీవ్రమ్ intense, శోకవేగమ్ of grief, ఏభిః by these, రక్షోభిః by the rakshasas, పరిభర్త్సనం చ threats also, బ్రూయాః you nararte, తే to you, అధ్వా journey, శివః happy, అస్తు let it be.
"Foremost vanara! tell Rama about my intense grief as well as the threats of the demons. May your journey be happy.
స రాజపుత్ర్య్రాప్రతివేదితార్థః కపిః కృతార్థః పరిహృష్టచేతాః.
అల్పావశేషం ప్రసమీక్ష్య కార్యం దిశం హ్యుదీచీం మనసా జగామ৷৷5.40.25৷৷
అల్పావశేషం ప్రసమీక్ష్య కార్యం దిశం హ్యుదీచీం మనసా జగామ৷৷5.40.25৷৷
సః that, కపిః vanara, రాజపుత్ర్యా by the princess, ప్రతివేదితార్థః understood the message, కృతార్థః accomplished, పరిహృష్టచేతాః delighted at heart, కార్యమ్ task, అల్పావశేషమ్ a small left over, ప్రసమీక్ష్య after considering, ఉదీచీమ్ north, దిశమ్ direction, మనసా mentally, జగమ reached.
Hanuman understood the message of princess Sita and felt delighted at heart at his accomplishment. Considering the small task yet to be accomplished he reached the northern shore mentally (He thought of Rama who waited in Kishkinda which is in the northern direction).
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే చత్వారింశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fortieth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
