[Hanuman decides to meet Ravana and measure his strength]

స చ వాగ్భిః ప్రశస్తాభిర్గమిష్యన్పూజితస్తయా.

తస్మాద్దేశాదపక్రమ్య చిన్తయామాస వానరః৷৷5.41.1৷৷


గమిష్యన్ to depart, సః వానరః that vanara, తయా by her, ప్రశస్తాభిః with choicest, వాగ్భిః with words, పూజితః honoured, తస్మాత్ from that, దేశాత్ from location, అపక్రమ్య moved, చిన్తయామాస started thinking.

Having been honoured and praised by Sita's words, Hanuman prepared to depart from Sita's presence.
అల్పశేషమిదం కార్యం దృష్టేయమసితేక్షణా.

త్రీనుపాయానతిక్రమ్య చతుర్థ: ఇహ విద్యతే৷৷5.41.2৷৷


ఇదం కార్యమ్ this work, అల్పశేషమ్ little more remains, ఇయమ్ this, అసితేక్షణా black-eyed lady, దృష్టా seen, త్రీన్ three expedients-negotiation, presentation and, dissension (Sama, Dana, Bheda), ఉపాయాన్ strategies, అతిక్రమ్య crossing, ఇహ here, చతుర్థ fourth (expedient) punishment (Danda), విద్యతే remains.

న సామ రక్షస్సు గుణాయ కల్పతే న దానమర్థోపచితేషు యుజ్యతే.

న భేదసాధ్యా బలదర్పితా జనాః పరాక్రమస్త్వేవ మమేహ రోచతే৷৷5.41.3৷৷


రక్షస్సు with demons, సామ negotiation, గుణాయ for any merit, న కల్పతే does not lead, అర్థోపచితేషు being wealthy, దానమ్ gifts, న యుజ్యతే not proper, బలదర్పితాః proud of their
strength, జనాః people, భేదసాధ్యాః will not yield by sowing seeds of dissension, న not, ఇహ here, మమ my, పరాక్రమస్త్వేవ only by valour, రోచతే pleases me.

'With demons, negotiation is of no use. They are wealthy, they need no gifts. Proud of their stregth, the demons will not yield to dissension. I think only by using power it can be done.
న చాస్య కార్యస్య పరాక్రమాదృతే వినిశ్చయః కశ్చిదిహోపపద్యతే.

హతప్రవీరా హి రణే హి రాక్షసాః కథఞ్చిదీయుర్యదిహాద్య మార్దవమ్৷৷5.41.4৷৷


ఇహ here, అస్య of this, కార్యస్య of the task, పరాక్రమాత్ ఋతే other than power, వినిశ్చయః a decision, కశ్చిత్ even one, ఇహ here, న ఉపపద్యతే not hold good, యత్ that, రణే in fight, హతప్రవీరాః slay a few heroes, రాక్షసాః ogres, అద్య to day, ఇహ here, కథఞ్చిత్ somehow, మార్దవమ్ soften, ఈయుః will yield.

'Other than power, there is no way to accomplish the task of ascertaining their strength. If I slay a few strong ogres somehow they may soften a little and yield.
కార్యే కర్మణి నిర్దిష్టే యో బహూన్యపి సాధయేత్.

పూర్వకార్యావిరోధేన స కార్యం కర్తుమర్హతి৷৷5.41.5৷৷


కార్యే in a work to be accomplished, కర్మణి in a work, నిర్దిష్టే when the work is entrusted, యః he who, పూర్వకార్యావిరోధేన without affecting the earlier work, బహూన్యపి many, సాధయేత్ will achieve, సః he, కార్యమ్ task, కర్తుమ్ to do, అర్హతి is fit.

'He, who can perform tasks in addition to the objective accomplished without affecting it, is really worthy.
న హ్యేకస్సాధకో హేతుస్స్వల్పస్యాపీహ కర్మణః.

యో హ్యర్థం బహుధా వేద స సమర్థోర్థసాధనే৷৷5.41.6৷৷


ఇహ here, స్వల్పస్య of a trivial task, అపి also, కర్మణః of the task, సాధకః effective, హేతుః cause,
ఏకః one, న హి is not, యః he who, అర్థమ్ as an object, బహుధా in many ways (means of doing), వేద knows, సః he, అర్థసాధనే in achieving the task, సమర్థః capable.

'There are ways more than one even to perform a small work. And the capable know it.
ఇహైవ తావత్కృతనిశ్చయో హ్యహం యది వ్రజేయం ప్లవగేశ్వరాలయమ్.

పరాత్మసమ్మర్దవిశేషతత్త్వవిత్తతః కృతం స్యాన్మమ భర్తృశాసనమ్৷৷5.41.7৷৷


అహమ్ I, ఇహైవ here itself, తావత్ therefore, పరాత్మసమ్మర్దవిశేషతత్త్వవిత్ by understanding the difference between the strength of enemy forces and our strength in war, ప్లవగేశ్వరాలయమ్ abode of vanaras, వ్రజేయం యది if I go, తతః then, మమ my, భర్తృశాసనమ్ the orders of my lord, కృతమ్ executed, స్యాత్ well.

'If I ascertain the difference in the strength of enemies and vanaras in war here itself and return to Kishkinda, the abode of vanaras, then I would have executed the orders of my lord properly.
కథం ను ఖల్వద్య భవేత్సుఖాగతం ప్రసహ్య యుద్ధం మమ రాక్షసైః సహ.

తథైవ ఖల్వాత్మబలం చ సారవత్సమ్మానయేన్మాం చ రణే దశాననః৷৷5.41.8৷৷


అద్య today, మమ for me, రాక్షసైః సహ with ogres, ప్రసహ్య enduring, యుద్ధమ్ war, కథం ను how to, సుఖాగతమ్ happy coming, భవేత్ may be, తథైవ in that way, ఆత్మబలం చ our strength, సారవత్ substantial, సః he, దశాననః చ ten-headed Ravana's, మామ్ me, రణే in fight, మానయేత్ measure.

'How can I have enduring war with the ogres today? How will my visit to this place end in happy return? Only in a combat this tenheaded Ravana will guage his strength and mine!
తతస్సమాసాద్య రణే దశాననం సమన్త్రివర్గం సబలప్రయాయినమ్.

హృది స్థితం తస్య మతం బలం చ వై సుఖేన మత్త్వాహమితః పునర్వ్రజే৷৷5.41.9৷৷


తతః thereafter, సమన్త్రివర్గమ్ along with the ministers, సబలప్రయాయినమ్ and army chiefs marching forward, దశాననమ్ ten-headed Ravana, రణే in war, సమాసాద్య after finding out, తస్య his, హృది in his mind, స్థితమ్ established, మతమ్ feeling, బలం చ వై strength, మత్త్వా knowing, అహమ్ I, ఇతః from here, సుఖేన happily, పునః again, వ్రజే can go.

'I can return happily only after I gauge the ten-headed Ravana's army in war, his strength, his companions including the ministers and his mind.
ఇదమస్య నృశంసస్య నన్దనోపమముత్తమమ్.

వనం నేత్రమనఃకాన్తం నానాద్రుమలతాయుతమ్৷৷5.41.10৷৷


నృశంసస్య wicked Ravana's, అస్య his, ఇదమ్ this (Ashoka garden), నేత్రమనఃకాన్తమ్ feast to the eyes and mind, నానాద్రుమలతాయుతమ్ filled with different kinds of trees and creepers, ఉత్తమమ్ excellent, వనమ్ garden, నన్దనోపమమ్ like the Nandana garden of Indra.

'This Ashoka garden of Ravana filled with different kinds of trees and creepers is a feast to the eyes and mind. It is an excellent garden like the Nandana garden of Indra.
ఇదం విధ్వంసయిష్యామి శుష్కం వనమివానలః.

అస్మిన్భగ్నే తతః కోపం కరిష్యతి దశాననః৷৷5.41.11৷৷


శుష్కమ్ dried up, వనమ్ forest, అనలః ఇవ like fire, ఇదమ్ this, విధ్వంసయిష్యామి will destroy, అస్మిన్ when this, భగ్నే devastate, తతః then, దశాననః Ravana, కోపమ్ anger, కరిష్యతి will exhibit.

'I will devastate this garden, just as fire destroys a dried up forest. This will enrage Ravana.
తతో మహత్సాశ్వమహారథద్విపం బలం సమాదేక్ష్యతి రాక్షసాధిపః.

త్రిశూలకాలాయసపట్టిసాయుధం తతో మహద్యుద్ధమిదం భవిష్యతి৷৷5.41.12৷৷


తతః then, రాక్షసాధిపః king of ogres, సాశ్వమహారథద్విపమ్ with horses, chariots and elephants, మహత్ great, త్రిశూలకాలాయసపట్టిసాయుధమ్ armed with tridents, black iron spears, బలమ్ army,
సమాదేక్ష్యతి will order, తతః then, ఇదమ్ this, మహత్ great, యుద్ధమ్ war, భవిష్యతి will take place.

'Then the demon king will order the horses, chariots and elephants and army equipped with tridents and spears to march against me. A great war will take place.
అహం తు తైః సంయతి చణ్డవిక్రమై స్సమేత్య రక్షోభిరసహ్య విక్రమః.

నిహత్య తద్రావణచోదితం బలం సుఖం గమిష్యామి కపీశ్వరాలయమ్৷৷5.41.13৷৷


అహం తు I on my part, చణ్డవిక్రమైః with those endowed with fierce strength, తైః with them, రక్షోభిః by demons, సంయతి in fight, సమేత్య colliding, అసహ్యవిక్రమః irresistible valour, రావణచోదితమ్ sent by Ravana, తత్ that, బలమ్ army, నిహత్య after destroying, సుఖమ్ happily, కపీశ్వరాలయమ్ to the abode of vanaras, గమిష్యామి I will go.

'I will fight with the ogres sent by Ravana, endowed with fierce strength and irresistible valour. After destroying their army I will go to the abode of vanaras happily'.
తతో మారుతవత్కృద్ధో మారుతిర్భీమవిక్రమః.

ఊరువేగేన మహతా ద్రుమాన్క్షేప్తుమథారభత్৷৷5.41.14৷৷


తతః then, భీమవిక్రమః a vanara of fierce valour, మారుతిః Maruti, క్రుద్ధః furious one, అథ and then, మహతా with great, ఊరువేగేన with speed sprung from his thighs, మారుతవత్ like the Wind-god, ద్రుమాన్ trees, క్షేప్తుమ్ to uproot, ఆరభత్ started.

Furious Maruti endowed with fierce valour started uprooting the trees with the speed sprung from his thighs like the Wind-god.
తతస్తు హనుమాన్వీరో బభఞ్జ ప్రమదావనమ్.

మత్తద్విజసమాఘుష్టం నానాద్రుమలతాయుతమ్৷৷5.41.15৷৷


తతః then, వీరః hero, హనుమాన్ Hanuman, మత్తద్విజసమాఘుష్టమ్ filled with intoxicated birds, నానాద్రుమలతాయుతమ్ with variety of trees and vines, ప్రమదావనమ్ garden grown for women folk, బభఞ్జ felled.

Then Hanuman felled a variety of trees and vines inhabited by intoxicated birds in the beautiful garden meant for womenfolk.
తద్వనం మథితైర్వృక్షైర్భిన్నైశ్చ సలిలాశయైః.

చూర్ణితైః పర్వతాగ్రైశ్చ బభూవాప్రియదర్శనమ్৷৷5.41.16৷৷


తత్ వనమ్ that garden, మథితైః with destroyed, వృక్షైః trees, భిన్నైః with breached, సలిలాశయైః ponds, చూర్ణితైః powdered, పర్వతాగ్రైశ్చ mountain peaks, అప్రియదర్శనమ్ unpleasant appearance, బభూవ remained.

That garden looked ugly with uprooted trees, breached ponds and powdered mountain peaks.
నానాశకున్తవిరుతైః ప్రభిన్నైస్సలిలాశయైః.

తామ్రైః కిసలయైః క్లాన్తై: క్లాన్తద్రుమలతాయుతమ్৷৷5.41.17৷৷

న బభౌ తద్వనం తత్ర దావానలహతం యథా.

వ్యాకులావరణా రేజుర్విహ్వలా ఇవ తా లతాః৷৷5.41.18৷৷


కలాన్తద్రుమలతాయుతమ్ with wilted vines and trees, తత్ వనమ్ that garden, నానాశకున్తవిరుతైః with birds shrieking with different kinds of sounds, ప్రభిన్నైః with smashed, సలిలాశయైః with ponds of water, క్లాన్తై: withered, తామ్రైః with red ones only, కిసలయైః with tender shoots, దావానలహతంరణాః like burnt-in forest fire, తాః లతాః those climbers, విహ్వలాః ఇవ like women with their robes disarrayed, రేజుః trembling in fear.

Vines and trees wilted, birds shrieking, the embankments of ponds destroyed, its tender coppery red shoots withered, the garden looked as though it is burnt by forest fire and the climbers looked like women shivering in fear with their robes disarrayed.
లతాగృహైశ్చిత్రగృహైశ్చ నాశితైర్మహోరగైర్వ్యాలమృగైశ్చ నిర్ధుతైః.

శిలాగృహైరున్మథితైస్తథా గృహైః ప్రణష్టరూపం తదభూన్మహద్వనమ్৷৷5.41.19৷৷


మహత్ great, తత్ వనమ్ that garden, నాశితైః ruined, లతాగృహైః arbours, చిత్రగృహైః picture galleries, నిర్ధుతైః destroyed, మహోరగైః huge serpents, వ్యాలమృగైశ్చ and even with wild animals, తథా in the same manner, ఉన్మథితైః scattered, శిలాగృహైః stone houses, గృహైః with houses, ప్రణష్టరూపమ్ disfigured, అభూత్ became.

The great garden lay disfigured, with the arbours and the picture galleries ruined, huge serpents and wild animals scattered, with stone houses and sheds destroyed.
సా విహ్వలాశోకలతాప్రతానా వనస్థలీ శోకలతాప్రతానా.

జాతా దశాస్యప్రమదావనస్య కపేర్బలాద్ధి ప్రమదావనస్య৷৷5.41.20৷৷


దశాస్యప్రమదావనస్య of that pleasure garden of the ten-headed Ravana, ప్రమదావనస్య కపేః with the strength of the monkey who had set out to protect a lady (Sita), సా వనస్థలీ that garden, బలాత్ by force, విహ్వలా destroyed, శోకలతాప్రతానా was spreading out creepers of sorrow, జాతా appeared.

The pleasure-garden of Ravana appeared as though it was spreading the creepers of sorrow, since it was totally destroyed by the monkey who had set out to protect a woman. ప్రమదా+వనస్య = of the pleasure garden, ప్రమదా+అవనస్య of the hero who came to protect a lady.
స తస్య కృత్వార్థపతేర్మహాకపిర్మహద్వ్యలీకం మనసో మహాత్మనః.

యుయుత్సురేకో బహుభిర్మహాబలైశ్శియా జ్వలంస్తోరణమాస్థితః కపిః৷৷5.41.21৷৷


సః మహాకపిః that great vanara, మహాత్మనః of the great self, తస్య his, అర్థపతేః of the lord of wealth, మనసః in mind, మహత్ great, వ్యలీకమ్ unpleasantness, కృత్వా having caused, మహాబలైః mighty, బహుభిః many, ఏకః singlehanded, యుయుత్సుః ready to fight, శ్రియా blazing, జ్వలన్ glowing, తోరణమ్ exit doorway, ఆస్థితః stood.

The great vanara having perpetrated mischief, rousing anger in the mind of the great lord of wealth, stood at the exit doorway ready to combat singlehanded with many warriors in that mighty army blazing in glory.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే ఏకచత్వారింశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fortyfirst sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
