[Hanuman ruins Ashoka garden -- kills eighty thousand kinkaras]

tataḥ pakṣininādēna vṛkṣabhaṅgasvanēna ca.

babhūvustrāsasambhrāntāssarvē laṅkānivāsinaḥ৷৷5.42.1৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, pakṣininādēna by the sounds of birds, vṛkṣabhaṅgasvanēna by the cracking sound of trees, sarvē all, laṅkānivāsinaḥ the residents of Lanka, trāsasambhrāntāḥ were panicked, babhūvuḥ became.

The residents of Lanka panicked at the shrieking sounds of birds and cracking sounds of trees.
vidrutāśca bhayatrastā vinēdurmṛgapakṣiṇaḥ.

rakṣasāṅ ca nimittāni krūrāṇi pratipēdirē৷৷5.42.2৷৷


mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ beasts and birds, vidrutā: ran and flown away, bhayatrastāḥ became scared, vinēduḥ screeching in all directions, rakṣasāṅ ca for the ogres, krūrāṇi fierce, nimittāni portents, pratipēdirē appeared.

The frightened beasts and birds ran and flew, screeching in all directions. Fierce portents appeared to the demons.
tatō gatāyāṅ nidrāyāṅ rākṣasyō vikṛtānanāḥ.

tadvanaṅ dadṛśurbhagnaṅ taṅ ca vīraṅ mahākapim৷৷5.42.3৷৷


tataḥ then, vikṛtānanāḥ women of hideous faces, rākṣasyaḥ ogressses, nidrāyām in sleep, gatāyām was awakened, bhagnam devastated, tat that, vanam garden, vīram hero, taṅ mahākapiṅ ca that great vanara, dadṛśuḥ saw.

Hideous-looking ogresses, awakened from sleep, saw the garden devastated by the heroic Vanara.
sa tā dṛṣṭvā mahābāhurmahāsattvō mahābalaḥ.

cakāra sumahadrūpaṅ rākṣasīnāṅ bhayāvaham৷৷5.42.4৷৷


mahābāhuḥ strong armed one, mahāsattvaḥ a great hero, mahābalaḥ mighty, saḥ he, Hanuman, tāḥ the women, dṛṣṭvā seeing, rākṣasīnām for the ogresses, bhayāvaham to create fear, sumahat very huge, rūpam form, cakāra assumed.

When the powerful, mighty and strong-armed Hanuman saw the ogresses he assumed a very huge form in order to strike terror in them.
tatastaṅ girisaṅkāśamatikāyaṅ mahābalam.

rākṣasyō vānaraṅ dṛṣṭvā papracchurjanakātmajām৷৷5.42.5৷৷


tataḥ then, girisaṅkāśam looking like a mountain, atikāyam of huge body, mahābalam mighty, taṅ vānaram that vanara, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, rākṣasyaḥ ogresses, janakātmajām Janaki, papracchuḥ questioned.

Then, seeing the huge body of the mighty vanara resembling a mountain the ogresses questioned Janaki about him.
kō.yaṅ kasya kutō vāyaṅ kiṅ nimittamihāgataḥ.

kathaṅ tvayā sahānēna saṅvādaḥ kṛta ityuta৷৷5.42.6৷৷


ayam this person, kaḥ who, kasya whose, ayam he, kutaḥ from where, kiṅ nimittam for what purpose, iha here, āgataḥ he has come, uta or, anēna by him, tvayā saha with you, saṅvādaḥ talk, kṛtaḥ made.

"Who is he? By whom has he been sent? From where and why did he come here? What dialogue did you have with him?
ācakṣva nō viśālākṣi mā bhūttē subhagē bhayam.

saṅvādamasitāpāṅgē tvayā kiṅ kṛtavānayam৷৷5.42.7৷৷


viśālākṣi large-eyed lady, naḥ to us, ācakṣva O you may tell, subhagē O auspicious one, tē to you, bhayam fear, mā bhūt let there be none, asitāpāṅgē O lady with dark side-glances, ayam this, tvayā with you, kim what, saṅvādam dialogue, kṛtavān he had.

"O lovely, large-eyed lady! O auspicious one! have no fear. What conversation did he have with you? Tell us".
athābravīnmahāsādhvī sītā sarvāṅgasundarī.

rakṣasāṅ bhīmarūpāṇāṅ vijñānē mama kā gatiḥ৷৷5.42.8৷৷


atha then, mahāsādhvī a chaste lady, sarvāṅgasundarī a lady of beautiful limbs, sītā Sita, tadā then, abravīt said, bhīmarūpāṇām of fierce form, rakṣasām of ogresses, vijñānē in knowing, gatiḥ direction, mama to me, kā what?

Chaste and beautiful Sita said, "How do I know about the ogresses who assume many fierce forms?"
yūyamēvābhijānīta yō.yaṅ yadvā kariṣyati.

ahirēva hyahēḥ pādānvijānāti na saṅśayaḥ৷৷5.42.9৷৷


ayam this, yaḥ whoever, yadvā what, kariṣyati he is about, yūyamēva you alone, abhijānīta you may find out, ahēḥ of a serpent, pādān feet, ahirēva a serpent alone, vijānāti knows, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no.

"You alone can know about who he is and what he is about. A serpent alone knows the movement (foot-prints) of another serpent. There is no doubt about it.
ahamapyasya bhītāsmi nainaṅ jānāmi kō nvayaṅ.

vēdmi rākṣasamēvainaṅ kāmarūpiṇamāgatam৷৷5.42.10৷৷


ahamapi I am also, asya at him, bhītā asmi I am scared of, ēnam him, kō nu who he is, ayam this person, na jānāmi I do not know, ēnam him, āgatam came, kāmarūpiṇam who has assumed his desired form in various ways, rākṣasamēva demon only, vēdmi I think.

"I am also scared of him. I do not know who he is. I think he is a demon, who came here assuming a form of his choice.
vaidēhyā vacanaṅ śrutvā rākṣasyō vidrutā diśaḥ.

sthitāḥ kāścidgatāḥ kāścidrāvaṇāya nivēditum৷৷5.42.11৷৷


vaidēhyāḥ Vaidehi's, vacanam words, śrutvā after listening to, rākṣasyaḥ ogresses, diśaḥ in all directions, vidrutāḥ ran, kāścit some, sthitāḥ stood there, kāścit some, rāvaṇāya to Ravana, nivēditum to report, gatāḥ fled.

LIstening to Vaidehi's words the ogresses divided themselves and fled in all directions. While some stood there, others went to report to Ravana.
rāvaṇasya samīpē tu rākṣasyō vikṛtānanāḥ.

virūpaṅ vānaraṅ bhīmamākhyātumupacakramuḥ৷৷5.42.12৷৷


vikṛtānanāḥ ugly-faced, rākṣasyaḥ she-demons, rāvaṇasya to Ravana, samīpē presence, virūpam disfigured, bhīmam frightening, vānaram vanara, ākhyātum to report, upacakramuḥ started.

The ugly-faced ogresses went to the presence of Ravana and reported about the frightening form of the vanara.
aśōkavanikāmadhyē rājanbhīmavapuḥ kapiḥ.

sītayā kṛtasaṅvādastiṣṭhatyamitavikramaḥ৷৷5.42.13৷৷


rājan O king, sītayā with Sita, kṛtasaṅvādaḥ had a dialogue, bhīmavapuḥ fearsome figure, amitavikramaḥ very powerful, kapiḥ vanara, aśōkavanikāmadhyē in the midst of Ashoka garden, tiṣṭhati is stationed.

"Your majesty! an extremely powerful and frightening Vanara had a dialogue with Sita. He is stationed in the midst of Ashoka garden.
na ca taṅ jānakī sītā hariṅ hariṇalōcanā.

asmābhirbahudhā pṛṣṭā nivēdayitumicchati৷৷5.42.14৷৷


hariṇalōcanā deer-eyed, jānakī Janaki, sītā Sita, asmābhiḥ by us, pṛṣṭā questioned, tam about him, nivēdayitum to disclose, na icchati not willing.

"The deer-eyed Sita is not willing to disclose to us his identity even when we questioned her.
vāsavasya bhavēddūtō dūtō vaiśravaṇasya vā.

prēṣitō vāpi rāmēṇa sītānvēṣaṇakāṅkṣayā৷৷5.42.15৷৷


vāsavasya Vasava's, dūtaḥ envoy, vaiśravaṇasya Vaisravana's, dūtō vā is he an envoy, sītānvēṣaṇakāṅkṣayā or one who has come to trace Sita, rāmēṇa by Rama, prēṣitō vāpi or sent, bhavēt may be.

"He may be an envoy of Indra or Kubera or of Rama sent with an intent to trace Sita.
tēna tvadbhutarūpēṇa yattattava manōharam.

nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇaṅ pramṛṣṭaṅ pramadāvanam৷৷5.42.16৷৷


adbhutarūpēṇa by a person of wonderful form, tēna by him, manōharam delightful, nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇam filled with various kinds of animals, yat such, tava your, pramadāvanam beautiful pleasure garden, pramṛṣṭam ruined.

"Your beautiful pleasure garden filled with a variety of beasts has been ruined by this wonderful figure.
na tatra kaściduddēśō yastēna na vināśitaḥ.

yatra sā jānakī sītā sa tēna na vināśitaḥ৷৷5.42.17৷৷


tēna by him, yaḥ whichever, na vināśitaḥ not ruined, uddēśaḥ place, tatra there, kaścit even one, na not, sā that, jānakī Janaki, sītā Sita, yatra wherever, saḥ that place, tēna by him, na vināśitaḥ not ruined.

There is not a single place that has not been ruined by him there. Only the place where Janaka's daughter, Sita is resting has not been touched.
jānakīrakṣaṇārthaṅ vā śramādvā nōpalabhyatē.

athavā kaśśramastasya saiva tēnābhirakṣitā৷৷5.42.18৷৷


jānakīrakṣaṇārthaṅ vā is it to protect Janaki, śramādvā or is it because he was tired, nōpalabhyatē we are not able to understand, athavā or else, tasya his, śramaḥ tiresomeness, kaḥ what, tēna by him, saiva she alone, abhirakṣitā is spared.

"It is not clear whether he spared that place for protecting Janakai or he stopped due to exhaustion. What is fatigue for him? It must be to save her that she is spared by him.
cārupallavapuṣpāḍhyaṅ yaṅ sītā svayamāsthitā.

pravṛddhaśśiṅśupāvṛkṣa ssa ca tēnābhirakṣitaḥ৷৷5.42.19৷৷


sītā Sita, cārupallavapuṣpāḍhyam a tree with lovely tender leaves and flowers, yam whom, svayam personally, āsthitā she resorted, saḥ that, pravṛddhaḥ large, śiṅśupāvṛkṣaḥ simsupa tree, tēna by him, abhirakṣitaḥ is saved from destruction.

"He has spared the simsupa tree with lovely, tender leaves and flowers which is a chosen resort by Sita.
tasyōgrarūpasyōgra! tvaṅ daṇḍamājñātumarhasi.

sītā sambhāṣitā yēna tadvanaṅ ca vināśitam৷৷5.42.20৷৷


yēna whomsoever, sītā Sita, sambhāṣitā had dialogue, tat vanaṅ ca that garden also, vināśitam has been ruined, tasya his, ugrarūpasya of a fierce form, tvam you, ugram severe, daṇḍam punishment, ājñātum to order, arhasi is proper

"Your highness should take severe action on that person of fierce appearance with whom Sita dared to speak, and by whom the garden is ruined.
manaḥ parigṛhītāṅ tāṅ tava rakṣōgaṇēśvara.

kassītāmabhibhāṣēta yō na syāttyaktajīvitaḥ৷৷5.42.21৷৷


rakṣōgaṇēśvara O lord of the demon clan, manaḥ parigṛhītām one who is desired by you, tāṅ sītām that Sita, yaḥ whoever, tyaktajīvitaḥ given up hope of life, na syāt if not, kaḥ who, abhibhāṣēta he will dare to talk.

"O lord of the demon clan! Who dares to talk to Sita if he has not given up all hope of life, since she is desired by you".
rākṣasīnāṅ vacaśtrutvā rāvaṇō rākṣasēśvaraḥ.

hutāgniriva jajvāla kōpasaṅvartitēkṣaṇaḥ৷৷5.42.22৷৷


rākṣasēśvaraḥ lord of ogres, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, rākṣasīnām she-demons, vacaḥ words, śrutvā after hearing, kōpasaṅvartitēkṣaṇaḥ his eye-balls rolling in anger, hutāgniriva like sacrificial fire into which offering is made,jajvāla flared.

On listening to the report of the ogresses, Ravana, the lord of demons flared up like blazing flame of a sacrificial fire, his eyeballs rolling in rage.
tasya kruddhasya nētrābhyāṅ prāpatannāsrabindavaḥ.

dīptābhyāmiva dīpābhyāṅ sārciṣa ssnēhabindavaḥ৷৷5.42.23৷৷


kruddhasya of the angry, tasya his, nētrābhyām from both the eyes, dīptābhyām burning ones, dīpābhyām from two lamps, sārciṣaḥ with flames, snēhabindavaḥ iva like drops of oil, asrabindavaḥ drops of tears, prāpatan fell down.

From his angry eyes fell down drops of tears just as burning drops of oil drip from two burning lamps.
ātmanassadṛśānśūrānkiṅkarānnāma rākṣasān.

vyādidēśa mahātējā nigrahārthaṅ hanūmataḥ৷৷5.42.24৷৷


mahātējāḥ powerful, hanūmataḥ Hanuman's, nigrahārtham to catch, ātmanaḥ his, sadṛśān equals, śūrān heroes, kiṅkarānnāma called kinkaras, rākṣasān demons, vyādidēśa commanded.

Then powerful Ravana commanded heroic demons called kinkaras who vied in strength to catch Hanuman.
tēṣāmaśītisāhasraṅ kiṅkarāṇāṅ tarasvinām.

niryayurbhavanāttasmātkūṭamudgarapāṇayaḥ৷৷5.42.25৷৷

mahōdarā mahādaṅṣṭrā ghōrarūpā mahābalāḥ.

yuddhābhimanasassarvē hanumadgrahaṇōdyatāḥ৷৷5.42.26৷৷


tarasvinām of swift-moving ones, tēṣāṅ kiṅkarāṇām of the kinkaras, aśītisāhasram eighty thousand, mahōdarāḥ large-bellied, mahādaṅṣṭrāḥ large-toothed, ghōrarūpāḥ dreadful-looking, mahābalāḥ powerful, yuddhābhimanasaḥ ready to fight in war, sarvē all, kūṭamudgarapāṇayaḥ hammers and clubs, hanumadgrahaṇōdyatāḥ resolved to capture Hanuman, tasmāt from that, bhavanāt building, niryayuḥ came out.

Eighty thousand powerful kinkaras (a clan of demons), large-bellied, with large teeth and of dreadful appearance, swift in action, armed with hammers and clubs marched from there, resolved to capture Hanuman.
tē kapīndraṅ samāsādya tōraṇasthamavasthitam.

abhipēturmahāvēgāḥ pataṅgā iva pāvakam৷৷5.42.27৷৷


tē they, tōraṇastham near the archway, avasthitam stood ready, kapīndram leader of vanaras, samāsādya having approached, mahāvēgāḥ swift ones, pataṅgāḥ moths, pāvakam iva like rushing into the flame, abhipētuḥ rushed.

The kinkaras rushed towards the leader of vanaras who stood near the archway like the moths rushing towards the flame.
tē gadābhirvicitrābhiḥ parighaiḥ kāñcanāṅgadaiḥ.

ājaghnurvānaraśrēṣṭhaṅ śaraiścādityasannibhaiḥ৷৷5.42.28৷৷


tē they, vicitrābhiḥ with wonderful ones, gadābhiḥ with iron maces, kāñcanāṅgadaiḥ edged with gold, parighaiḥ with crow-bars, ādityasannibhaiḥ resembling the Sun, śaraiśca with arrows, vānaraśrēṣṭham best of vanaras, ājaghnuḥ assailed.

They assailed Hanuman with iron maces, crow-bars edged with gold and shining arrows resembling the Sun.
mudgaraiḥ paṭṭiśaiśśūlaiḥ prāsatōmaraśaktibhiḥ.

parivārya hanūmantaṅ sahasā tasthuragrataḥ৷৷5.42.29৷৷


mudgaraiḥ with hammers, paṭṭi with sharp-edged spears, śūlaiḥ with tridents, prāsatōmaraśaktibhiḥ with barbed missiles and powerful javelins, sahasā at once, hanūmantam Hanuman, parivārya surrounded, agrataḥ in front of him, tasthuḥ stood.

They quickly surrounded Hanuman and stood with hammers, sharp-edged spears, tridents, barbed missiles and powerful javelins.
hanumānapi tējasvī śrīmānparvatasannibhaḥ.

kṣitāvāvidhya lāṅgūlaṅ nanāda ca mahāsvanam৷৷5.42.30৷৷


tējasvī brilliant, śrīmān illustrious one, parvatasannibhaḥ resembling a mountain, hanumānapi Hanuman also, lāṅgūlam tail, kṣitau on the ground, āvidhya waved, mahāsvanam causing loud sound, nanāda ca roared.

Gigantic Hanuman, illustrious and brilliant, roared and waved his tail striking it with force on the ground causing loud sound.
sa bhūtvā sumahākāyō hanumānmārutātmajaḥ.

dhṛṣṭamāsphōṭayāmāsa laṅkāṅ śabdēna pūrayan৷৷5.42.31৷৷


mārutātmajaḥ Maruti's son, saḥ hanumān that Hanuman, sumahākāyaḥ with a huge body, bhūtvā assuming, śabdēna by the sound, laṅkām entire Lanka, pūrayan echoed, dhṛṣṭam wildly, asphōṭayāmāsa patted.

Hanuman, son of Maruti, enlarged his body to a huge size and patted himself wildly making loud noise that echoed the entire Lanka.
tasyāsphōṭitaśabdēna mahatā sānunādinā.

pēturvihaṅgā gaganāduccaiścēdamaghōṣayat৷৷5.42.32৷৷


sānunādinā by the frightening echoing sound, mahatā with great, tasya his, asphōṭitaśabdēna by the sound of the patting, vihaṅgāḥ birds, gaganāt from the sky, pētuḥ fell down, uccaiḥ with a loud noise, idam thus, aghōṣayat ca proclaimed.

By the highly frightening sound caused by Hanuman patting, the birds from the sky fell down making a loud noise and Hanuman proclaimed in a loud voice as follows:
jayatyatibalō rāmō lakṣmaṇaśca mahābalaḥ.

rājā jayati sugrīvō rāghavēṇābhipālitaḥ৷৷5.42.33৷৷


atibalaḥ mighty, rāmaḥ Rama, jayati is victorious, mahābalaḥ powerful, lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana also, rāghavēṇa by Rama, abhipālitaḥ ruled, rājā king, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, jayati is victorious.

"Victory to Rama, the mighty and powerful, Victory to Lakshmana. Victory to king Sugriva who is ruled by Rama."
dāsō.haṅ kōsalēndrasya rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ.

hanumānśatrusainyānāṅ nihantā mārutātmajaḥ৷৷5.42.34৷৷


śatrusainyānām of the enemy army, nihantā killer, mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, aham I am, kōsalēndrasya of the lord of Kosala kingdom, akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ a man of unwearied action, rāmasya Rama's, dāsaḥ servant.

"I, son of the Wind-god, destroyer of hostile armies, am a servant of Rama, the lord of Kosala kingdom, a man of unwearied action.
na rāvaṇasahasraṅ mē yuddhē pratibalaṅ bhavēt.

śilābhistu praharataḥ pādapaiśca sahasraśaḥ৷৷5.42.35৷৷


sahasraśaḥ a thousand ways, śilābhiḥ with stones, pādapaiśca with even trees, praharataḥ while I pound, mē to me, yuddhē in war, rāvaṇasahasram a thousand Ravanas, pratibalam match in strength, na bhavēt will not.

Even a thousand Ravanas will not match me in strength when I pound stones and trees in a thousand ways.
ardayitvā purīṅ laṅkāmabhivādya ca maithilīm.

samṛddhārthō gamiṣyāmi miṣatāṅ sarvarakṣasām৷৷5.42.36৷৷


sarvarakṣasām all ogres, miṣatām as they gaze, laṅkāṅ purīm city of Lanka, ardayitvā shall destroy, maithilīm to Mythili, abhivādya ca and pay respects, samṛddhārthaḥ having accomplished my purpose, gamiṣyāmi I will return.

"I shall destroy the city of Lanka and pay my respects to Mythili right under the nose of all demons. I will return with my purpose accomplished.
tasya sannādaśabdēna tē.bhavanbhayaśaṅkitāḥ.

dadṛśuśca hanūmantaṅ sandhyāmēghamivōnnatam৷৷5.42.37৷৷


tē they, tasya his, sannādaśabdēna with the sound of hearing, bhayaśaṅkitā: errified, abhavan seemed, sandhyāmēghamiva like a cloud in twilight, unnatam towering, hanūmantam Hanuman, dadṛśuśca saw.

Terrified on hearing the roar, the kinkaras looked at the towering Hanuman who seemed like a cloud in twilight (red in colour).
svāmisandēśaniśśaṅkāstatastē rākṣasāḥ kapim.

citraiḥ praharaṇairbhīmairabhipētustatastataḥ৷৷5.42.38৷৷


tataḥ then, tē they, rākṣasāḥ demons, svāmisandēśaniḥśaṅkā: on account the king's command putting aside their fear, citraiḥ with dreadful, praharaṇaiḥ with weapons, kapim the vanara, abhipētuḥ attacked him.

Obeying their king's commnad, putting aside their fear, the kinkaras freely attacked the vanara from all directions with dreadful weapons.
sa taiḥ parivṛtaśśūraissarvatassumahābalaḥ.

āsasādā.yasaṅ bhīmaṅ parighaṅ tōraṇāśritam৷৷5.42.39৷৷


sumahābalaḥ exceesively powerful one, saḥ he, Hanuman, śūraiḥ with heroes, taiḥ with those, sarvataḥ all over, parivṛtaḥ surrounded, tōraṇāśritam near the archway, bhīmam terrific, āyasam a weapon made of iron, parigham iron beam, āsasāda picked up.

Extremely powerful Hanuman surrounded by heroes all over, on his part went to the archway and picked up a terrific iron beam.
sa taṅ parighamādāya jaghāna rajanīcarān.

sa pannagamivādāya sphurantaṅ vinatāsutaḥ৷৷5.42.40৷৷

vicacārāmbarē vīraḥ parigṛhya ca mārutiḥ.


saḥ he, taṅ parigham that iron beam, ādāya took hold, rajanīcarān night-rangers, jaghāna struck them, vīraḥ hero, saḥ mārutiḥ that Maruti, vinatāsutaḥ just as Vinatha's son, sphurantam shoots, pannagam serpent, ādāya seized, parigṛhya took hold, ambarē in the sky, vicacāra started moving.

Hanuman, the mighty hero, seized the iron beam and struck the kinkaras, just as Garuda, the son of Vinata shoots up a struggling serpent and starts taking strides in the sky with the weapon in his hand (like Indra with his thunderbolt did with demons).
sa hatvā rākṣasānvīrānkiṅkarānmārutātmajaḥ৷৷5.42.41৷৷

yuddhākāṅkṣī punarvīrastōraṇaṅ samupāśritaḥ.


vīraḥ hero, saḥ mārutātmajaḥ that Wind-god's son, vīrān heroes, kiṅkarān kinkaras, rākṣasān ogres, hatvā having killed, punaḥ again, yuddhākāṅkṣī desiring further combat, tōraṇam archway, samupāśritaḥ reached.

The great Wind-god's son killed the kinkaras, and returned to the archway desiring further combat.
tatastasmādbhayānmuktāḥ katicittatra rākṣasāḥ৷৷5.42.42৷৷

nihatānkiṅkarānsarvānrāvaṇāyanyavēdayan.


tataḥ then, tatra that, tasmāt from fear, bhayāt out of fear, muktāḥ relieved, katicit some, rākṣasāḥ ogres, sarvān all, kiṅkarān kinkaras, nihatān killed, rāvaṇāya to Ravana, nyavēdayan reported.

Then a few surviving ogres took to their heels after getting over that shock and reported to Ravana of the destruction of the kinkaras in the combat
sa rākṣasānāṅ nihataṅ mahadbalaṅ niśamya rājā parivṛttalōcanaḥ.

samādidēśāpratimaṅ parākramē prahastaputraṅ samarē sudurjayam৷৷5.42.43৷৷


sa he, rājā king, rākṣasānām of ogres, mahat mighty, balam army, nihatam killed, niśamya after hearing, parivṛttalōcanaḥ with his eyes rolling, parākramē in valour, apratimam matchless, samarē in war, sudurjayam difficult to conquer, prahastaputram son of Prahasta, samādidēśa commanded.

The mighty demon king having heard about the killing of the formidable army of ogres, his eyes rolling in rage, commanded the son of Prahasta, who is difficult to conquer and matchless in war.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē dvicatvāriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fortysecond sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
