[Hanuman wonders at the splendour and glory of Ravana]

తతస్స కర్మణా తస్య విస్మితో భీమవిక్రమః.

హనుమాన్రోషతామ్రాక్షో రక్షోధిపమవైక్షత৷৷5.49.1৷৷


తతః then, భీమవిక్రమః of fierce valour, సః హనుమాన్ that Hanuman, తస్య his, తేన కర్మణా by that act, విస్మితః astonished, రోషతామ్రాక్షః eyes red with anger, రక్షోధిపమ్ demon king, అవైక్షత beheld.

The highly courageous Hanuman, astonished at the action (of binding and dragging him to the court) by the demon king looked at him with eyes turned red in anger.
భ్రాజమానం మహార్హేణ కాఞ్చనేన విరాజతా.

ముక్తాజాలావృతేనాథ మకుటేన మహాద్యుతిమ్৷৷5.49.2৷৷


మహార్హేణ of innate splendour, కాఞ్చనేన with a golden, విరాజతా shining, అథ and, ముక్తాజాలావృతేన covered with strings of pearls, మకుటేన with crown, భ్రాజమానమ్ shining, మహాద్యుతిమ్ glittering.

(Hanuman looked at Ravana) of innate splendour, who shone with a glittering crown of gold glowing, encircled with strings of pearls.
వజ్రసంయోగసంయుక్తైర్మహార్హమణివిగ్రహైః.

హైమైరాభరణైశ్చిత్రైర్మనసేవ ప్రకల్పితైః৷৷5.49.3৷৷


వజ్రసంయోగసంయుక్తై: studded with diamonds, మహార్హమణివిగ్రహైః adorned with small motifs made of precious gems, మనసా by imagination, ప్రకల్పితైరివ as if created, చిత్రైః wonderful, హైమైః golden, ఆభరణైః with ornaments.

He was decked with wonderful golden ornaments studded with diamonds and had small motifs of precious gems fixed to them. They were as though designed by imagination. (An ornament made with the hand connot be so fine and delicate.)
మహార్హక్షౌమసంవీతం రక్తచన్దనరూషితమ్.

స్వానులిప్తం విచిత్రాభిర్వివిధాభిశ్చ భక్తిభిః৷৷5.49.4৷৷


మహార్హక్షౌమసంవీతమ్ dressed in exquisite silk, రక్తచన్దనరూషితమ్ smeared with red sandal paste, విచిత్రాభిః with wonderful, వివిధాభిశ్చ with many kinds, భక్తిభిః with ornamental designs drawn, స్వానులిప్తమ్ smeared with unguents.

He was dressed in exquisite silk and smeared with red sandal paste and had many ornamental designs drawn on his body with fragrant unguents.
విచిత్రైర్దర్శనీయైశ్చ రక్తాక్షైర్భీమదర్శనైః.

దీప్తతీక్ష్ణమహాదంష్ట్రైః ప్రలమ్బదశనచ్ఛదైః৷৷5.49.5৷৷

శిరోభిర్దశభిర్వీరం భ్రాజమానం మహౌజసమ్.

నానావ్యాలసమాకీర్ణైశ్శిఖరైరివ మన్దరమ్৷৷5.49.6৷৷


దర్శనీయైః appeared, రక్తాక్షైః with blood-red eyes, భీమదర్శనైః with terrible looks, దీప్తతీక్ష్ణమహాదంష్ట్రైః with shining sharp big teeth, ప్రలమ్బదశనచ్ఛదైః with drooping lips, దశభిః with ten, శిరోభిః with heads, విచిత్రైః wonderful, నానావ్యాలసమాకీర్ణైః with different kinds of beasts, శిఖరైః with peaks, మన్దరమ్ ఇవ like Mandara mountain, భ్రాజమానం splendid, మహౌజసమ్ lustrous, వీరమ్ hero.

He appeared terrible with blood-red eyes, shining sharp big teeth, drooping lips and ten heads, which looked like ten peaks of mountain Mandara inhabited by various beasts. He was heroic, powerful and splendid.
నీలాఞ్జనచయప్రఖ్యం హారేణోరసి రాజతా.

పూర్ణచన్ద్రాభవక్త్రేణ సబలాకమివామ్బుదమ్৷৷5.49.7৷৷


నీలాఞ్జనచయప్రఖ్యమ్ like a black mountain of collyrium, ఉరసి on the chest, రాజతా by the illumining, హారేణ with a pearl necklace, పూర్ణచన్ద్రాభవక్త్రేణ with a face like the full-moon, బలాకమ్ with cranes around, అమ్బుదమివ like a cloud.

He was like a black mountain of collyrium, and with a face like the full-moon. With a pearl necklace illumining his chest he appeared like a cloud lit up by the full-moon with white cranes flying across. (The white pearl-necklace moving on his chest appeared like a row of cranes flying through the black cloud.)
బాహుభిర్బద్ధకేయూరైశ్చన్దనోత్తమరూషితైః.

భ్రాజమానాఙ్గదైః పీనైః పఞ్చశీర్షైరివోరగైః৷৷5.49.8৷৷


బద్ధకేయూరైః wearing armlets, చన్దనోత్తమరూషితైః smeared with choicest fragrants of sandal, భ్రాజమానాఙ్గదైః with shining, పీనైః stout ones, పఞ్చశీర్షైః five headed, ఉరగైరివ like serpents, బాహుభిః with arms.

Adorned with armlets (keyura), smeared with choicest sandal paste, his shining, stout armlets appeared like many five-hooded serpents (fingers appearing like hoods).
మహతిస్ఫాటికే చిత్రే రత్నసంయోగసంస్కృతే.

ఉత్తమాస్తరణాస్తీర్ణే సూపవిష్టం వరాసనే৷৷5.49.9৷৷


రత్నసంయోగసంస్కృతే encrusted with precious stones, చిత్రే a wonderful one, ఉత్తమాస్తరణాస్తీర్ణే covered with beautiful carpets, స్ఫాటికే with crystals, మహతి huge one, వరాసనే a magnificent throne, సూపవిష్టమ్ well seated.

(He was) seated on a huge magnificent throne of crystal encrusted with precious stones and overspread with a wonderful carpet.
అలఙ్కృతాభిరత్యర్థం ప్రమదాభిః సమన్తతః.

వాలవ్యజనహస్తాభిరారాత్సముపసేవితమ్৷৷5.49.10৷৷


అత్యర్థమ్ exceedingly well, అలఙ్కృతాభిః with decorated ones, వాలవ్యజనహస్తాభిః holding whisks in their hands, ప్రమదాభిః with beautiful girls, సమన్తతః all over, ఆరాత్ the vicinity, సముపసేవితమ్ attended on him.

Young and beautiful girls decorated exceedingly well holding whisks all over the vicinity attended on him.
దుర్ధరేణ ప్రహస్తేన మహాపార్శ్వేన రక్షసా.

మన్త్రిభిర్మన్త్రతత్త్వజ్ఞైర్నికుమ్భేన చ మన్త్రిణా৷৷5.49.11৷৷

సుఖోపవిష్టం రక్షోభిశ్చతుర్భిర్బలదర్పితైః.

కృత్స్నం పరివృతం లోకం చతుర్భిరివ సాగరైః৷৷5.49.12৷৷


దుర్ధరేణ by Durdhara, ప్రహస్తేన by Prahasta, రక్షసా by the ogres, మహాపార్శ్వేన by Mahaparsva, మన్త్రిణా by the ministers, నికుమ్భేన by Nikumbha, మన్త్రతత్త్వజ్ఞైః with learned ones, మన్త్రిభిః with ministers, బలదర్పితైః with arrogant ones, చతుర్భిః with four, రక్షోభిః with demons, సుఖోపవిష్టమ్ comfortably seated, చతుర్భిః with four, సాగరైః with oceans, పరివృతమ్ surrounded, కృత్స్నమ్ entire, లోకమ్ ఇవ like the world.

He was attended by Durdhara, Prahasta, Mahaparsva and Nikumbha who were his learned ministers. Seated comfortably and attended by the four arrogant ministers, he was puffed with pride of their strength and appeared like the entire world surrounded by four oceans.
మన్త్రిభిర్మన్త్రతత్త్వజ్ఞైరన్యైశ్చ శుభబుద్ధిభిః.

అన్వాస్యమానం రక్షోభిః సురైరివ సురేశ్వరమ్৷৷5.49.13৷৷


మన్త్రతత్త్వజ్ఞైః by learned ones, శుభబుద్ధిభిః by the intellectuals, మన్త్రిభిః with ministers, అన్యైః with others, రక్షోభిః with ogres, సురైః with suras, సురేశ్వరమ్ ఇవ like Indra, అన్వాస్యమానమ్ attended him.

He was attended by ogres including ministers who were intellectuals and adept in counselling. He appeared like lord Indra attended by the gods.
అపశ్యద్రాక్షసపతిం హనుమానతితేజసమ్.

విష్ఠితం మేరుశిఖరే సతోయమివ తోయదమ్৷৷5.49.14৷৷


హనుమాన్ Hanuman, అతితేజసమ్ highly resplendent, మేరుశిఖరే on the peak of mount Meru, విష్ఠితమ్ seated, సతోయమ్ laden with water, తోయదమ్ ఇవ like cloud, రాక్షసపతిమ్ demon king, అపశ్యత్ saw.

Hanuman saw the highly resplendent giant king (seated on the throne) who appeared like a cloud laden with water appearing on the peak of mount Meru.
స తైస్సమ్పీడ్యమానోపి రక్షోభిర్భీమవిక్రమైః.

విస్మయం పరమం గత్వా రక్షోధిపమవైక్షత৷৷5.49.15৷৷


సః he, భీమవిక్రమైః by those of fierce valour, రక్షోభిః by ogres, సమ్పీడ్యమానోపి even though pressed hard, పరమమ్ great, విస్మయమ్ wonder, గత్వా experiencing, రక్షోధిపమ్ king of demons, అవైక్షత saw.

Hanuman looked at the demon king with great amazement even while he was dealt harshly by the demons of fierce valour.
భ్రాజమానం తతో దృష్ట్వా హనుమాన్రాక్షసేశ్వరమ్.

మనసా చిన్తయామాస తేజసా తస్య మోహితః৷৷5.49.16৷৷


తతః then, హనుమాన్ Hanuman, భ్రాజమానమ్ splendid, రాక్షసేశ్వరమ్ lord of ogres, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, తస్య his, తేజసా by splendour, మోహితః dismayed, మనసా in mind, చిన్తయామాస started thinking.

Seeing the splendour of the lord of demons, Hanuman was dimayed and started thinking thus:
అహో రూపమహో ధైర్యమహో సత్త్వమహో ద్యుతిః.

అహో రాక్షసరాజస్య సర్వలక్షణయుక్తతా৷৷5.49.17৷৷


రాక్షసరాజస్య Ravana's, రూపమ్ form, అహో oh, wonderful, ధైర్యమ్ courage, అహో amazing, సత్త్వమ్ power, అహో is great, ద్యుతిః glow, అహో great, సర్వలక్షణయుక్తతా endowment of all merits, అహో how great.

'Oh! what charm! what courage! what strength! what splendour! How great is this demon-king, an endowment of all merits.
యద్యధర్మో న బలవాన్ స్యాదయం రాక్షసేశ్వరః.

స్యాదయం సురలోకస్య సశక్రస్యాపి రక్షితా৷৷5.49.18৷৷


అయమ్ this, అధర్మః unrighteousness, బలవాన్ powerful, న స్యాద్యది if it was not, అయమ్ this, రాక్షసేశ్వరః lord of demons, సశక్రస్య including Indra, సురలోకస్యాపి even of the world of gods, రక్షితా lord, స్యాత్ would become.

'If only this lord of demons was not unrighteous, he could have become even the lord (protector) of gods including Indra.
అస్య క్రూరైర్నృశంసైశ్చ కర్మభిర్లోకకుత్సితైః.

సర్వే బిభ్యతి ఖల్వస్మాల్లోకాస్సామరదానవాః৷৷5.49.19৷৷

అయం హ్యుత్సహతే క్రుద్ధః కర్తుమేకార్ణవం జగత్.


క్రూరైః with cruel, నృశంసైశ్చ wicked, లోకకుత్సితైః contemptible to the people, అస్య కర్మభిః by his deeds, సామరదానవాః even the demons and gods, సర్వే all, లోకాః people of the world, అస్మాత్ from his, బిభ్యతి హి get sacred, అయమ్ this person, క్రుద్ధః becomes angry, జగత్ the world, ఏకార్ణవమ్ one ocean, కర్తుమ్ to render, ఉత్సహతే హి indeed he will intend.

'This Ravana has done many cruel, fierce and contemptible deeds. That is why even
the demons, gods and all the people of this world get scared of him. He will render the entire world into a single ocean when he turns angry'.
ఇతి చిన్తాం బహువిధామకరోన్మతిమాన్ హరిః৷৷5.49.20৷৷

దృష్ట్వా రాక్షసరాజస్య ప్రభావమమితౌజసః.


అమితౌజసః brilliant, రాక్షసరాజస్య Ravana's, ప్రభావమ్ power, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, మతిమాన్ intelligent, హరిః Hanuman, ఇతి in this way, బహువిధామ్ many ways, చిన్తామ్ thought, అకరోత్ entertained.

Many such thoughts crossed Hanuman's intelligent mind on seeing Ravana's brilliance and power.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే ఏకోనపఞ్చాశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fortyninth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
