[Hanuman finds demons all over Lanka -- feels sad, unable to find Sita.]

తతః స మధ్యంగతమంశుమన్తం జ్యోత్స్నావితానం మహదుద్వమన్తమ్.

దదర్శ ధీమాన్ దివి భానుమన్తం గోష్ఠే వృషం మత్తమివ భ్రమన్తమ్৷৷5.5.1৷৷


తతః then, ధీమాన్ intelligent, సః that, మధ్యం గతమ్ ascended to the centre (of the sky), అంశుమన్తమ్ luminous lord, మహత్ great, జ్యోత్స్నావితానమ్ a canopy of moon-light, ఉద్వమన్తమ్ spreading, గోష్ఠే in the stable, భ్రమన్తమ్ moving about, మత్తమ్ intoxicated, వృషమివ like a mighty bull, భానుమన్తమ్ like Sun, దివి in the sky, దదర్శ saw.

Then intelligent Hanuman observed the Moon in the central part of the sky spreading a canopy of his luminescence like the Sun, and looking like an intoxicated mighty (white) bull moving in a stable.
లోకస్య పాపాని వినాశయన్తం మహోదధిం చాపి సమేధయన్తమ్.

భూతాని సర్వాణి విరాజయన్తం దదర్శ శీతాంశుమథాభియాన్తమ్৷৷5.5.2৷৷


లోకస్య world's, పాపాని agony, వినాశయన్తమ్ warding off, మహోదధిమ్ great ocean, సమేధయన్తం చాపి augmenting the ocean even, సర్వాణి all, భూతాని creatures, విరాజయన్తమ్ illuminating, అభియాన్తమ్ moving forward (the earth, space and sky), శీతాంశుమ్ Moon, దదర్శ saw.

While moving forward, Hanuman saw the Moon spreading his light, thereby warding off the agony of all creatures, causing the swelling of the ocean and illuminating the earth as well as the sky.
యా భాతి లక్ష్మీర్భువి మన్దరస్థా తథా ప్రదోషేషు చ సాగరస్థా.

తథైవ తోయేషు చ పుష్కరస్థా రరాజ సా చారునిశాకరస్థా৷৷5.5.3৷৷


భువి on earth, యా that, లక్ష్మీః splendour (beauty), మన్దరస్థా found on Mandara mountain,
భాతి glows, తథా so also, ప్రదోషేషు at dusk, సాగరస్థా found in the ocean, తథైవ the same, తోయేషు in water, పుష్కరస్థా in lotuses in the lakes, సా such, చారునిశాకరస్థా is found in beautiful Moon, రరాజ shone.

'The same splendour on the Mandara mountain on earth, which glows at dusk lay on the ocean is there, on lotuses in the lakes and on the beautiful Moon also.
హంసో యథా రాజతపఞ్జరస్థః సింహో యథా మన్దరకన్దరస్థః.

వీరో యథా గర్వితకుఞ్జరస్థ చన్ద్రోపి బభ్రాజ తథామ్బరస్థః৷৷5.5.4৷৷


రాజతపఞ్జరస్థః found in a silver cage, హంసః swan, యథా like that, మన్దరకన్దరస్థః in the caves of Mandara mountain, సింహః lion, యథా like that, గర్వితకుఞ్జరస్థః mounted on a proud elephant, వీరః hero, యథా like, అమ్బరస్థః in the sky, చన్ద్రః Moon, తథా in the same way, బభ్రాజ looked very lustrous.

'Like a swan in a cage of silver, like a lion in a cave of Mandara mountain, like a hero on a proud, intoxicated elephant, the Moon shone in the sky.
స్థితః కకుద్మానివ తీక్ష్ణశృఙ్గో మహాచలః శ్వేత ఇవోచ్చశృఙ్గః.

హస్తీవ జామ్బూనదబద్ధశృఙ్గో రరాజ చన్ద్రః పరిపూర్ణశృఙ్గః৷৷5.5.5৷৷


తీక్ష్ణశృఙ్గః lofty peaks, స్థితః remaining, కకుద్మానివ horned bull, ఉచ్చశృఙ్గః tall peaks, శ్వేతః white, మహాచలః great mountain, జామ్బూనదబద్ధశృఙ్గః gold plated tusks, హస్తీవ like elephant, పరిపూర్ణశృఙ్గః complete with horn, చన్ద్రః Moon, రరాజ shone.

The full-moon with its horn-like spot shone like a bull with sharp horns, like the white Himalayan mountain with its lofty peaks, and like an elephant with gold plated tusks;
వినష్టశీతామ్బుతుషారపఙ్కో మహాగ్రహగ్రాహవినష్టపఙ్కః.

ప్రకాశలక్ష్మ్యాశ్రయనిర్మలాఙ్క: రరాజ చన్ద్రో భగవాన్ శశాఙ్కః৷৷5.5.6৷৷


వినష్టశీతామ్బుతుషారపఙ్కః with the dew formed with frost, మహాగ్రహగ్రాహ వినష్టపఙ్కః the frost
destroyed by the great planet (Sun), ప్రకాశలక్ష్మ్యాశ్రయనిర్మలాఙ్కః the clean surface resting on graceful radiance, శశాఙ్కః the rabbit-like figure on Moon, భగవాన్ god, చన్ద్రః Moon, రరాజ shone.

With the Sun, the great planet (star), destroying the frost that forms the dew, the Moon with its stain shone with graceful radiance.
శిలాతలం ప్రాప్య యథా మృగేన్ద్రో మహారణం ప్రాప్య యథా గజేన్ద్రః.

రాజ్యం సమాసాద్య యథా నరేన్ద్ర స్తథాప్రకాశో విరరాజ చన్ద్రః৷৷5.5.7৷৷


తథా ప్రకాశః effulgent, చన్ద్రః Moon, మృగేన్ద్రః lion, the lord of animals, శిలాతలమ్ on a rock, ప్రాప్య having reached, యథా as, గజేన్ద్రః lord of elephants, మహారణమ్ deep forest, ప్రాప్య after entering, యథా as, నరేన్ద్ర: lord of earth, రాజ్యం సమాసాద్య on attaining kingdom, విరరాజ shone bright .

The Moon shone bright like a lion mounted on a rock, like a lordly elephant in a deep forest, like a king on attaining the kingdom.
ప్రకాశచన్ద్రోదయనష్టదోషః ప్రవృత్తరక్షః పిశితాశదోషః.

రామాభిరామేరితచిత్తదోషః స్వర్గప్రకాశో భగవాన్ ప్రదోషః৷৷5.5.8৷৷


ప్రకాశచన్ద్రోదయనష్టదోషః the darkness dispelled with the rise of the radiant Moon, ప్రవృత్తరక్షఃపిశితాశదోషః dark deeds dispelled, canibals started by their movement, రామాభిరామేరితచిత్తదోషః the natural instinct for love among women is incited, భగవాన్ resplendent Moon, ప్రదోషః dusk, స్వర్గప్రకాశః spread its bliss like heaven every where.

At the time of moon-rise, the darkness of dusk is dispelled, the dark deeds of cannibals disappear, the natural instinct for love returns to women as the radiance of the Moon spreads everywhere like in heaven.
తన్త్రీస్వనాః కర్ణసుఖాః ప్రవృత్తాః స్వపన్తి నార్యః పతిభిః సువృత్తాః.

నక్తంచరాశ్చాపి తథా ప్రవృత్తా: విహర్తుమత్యద్భుతరౌద్రవృత్తాః৷৷5.5.9৷৷


కర్ణసుఖాః pleasing to the ears, తన్త్రీస్వనాః sounds of string instruments, ప్రవృత్తాః started, సువృత్తాః chaste, నార్యః women, పతిభిః with their husbands, స్వపన్తి are sleeping, తథా likewise, అత్యద్భుతరౌద్రవృత్తా: whose deeds were wonderful exhibiting their anger, నక్తంచరాశ్చాపి night walkers also, విహర్తుమ్ to roam about, ప్రవృత్తాః started.

Pleasing sounds of string instruments had begun to be heard. Chaste women were found asleep with their husbands.The night-rangers had begun their strange (evil and cruel) deeds exhibiting their anger.
మత్తప్రమత్తాని సమాకులాని రథాశ్వభద్రాసనసఙ్కులాని.

వీరశ్రియా చాపి సమాకులాని దదర్శ ధీమాన్ స కపిః కులాని৷৷5.5.10৷৷


వీరః heroic, ధీమాన్ intelligent, సః కపిః vanara Hanuman, మత్తప్రమత్తాని intoxicated and dull, సమాకులాని filled, రథాశ్వభద్రాసనసంకులాని filled with chariots, drawn by horses with choicest seats, శ్రియా చాపి also prosperous, సమాకులాని filled (scattered), కులాని houses, దదర్శ observed.

Intelligent Hanuman, the great warrior, observed there in the prosperous mansions, demons proud of their wealth, highly intoxicated and dull, their houses full of horse-drawn chariots with comfortable seats.
పరస్పరం చాధికమాక్షిపన్తి భుజాంశ్చ పీనానధికం క్షిపన్తి.

మత్తప్రలాపానధికం క్షిపన్తి మత్తాని చాన్యోన్యమధిక్షిపన్తి৷৷5.5.11৷৷


పరస్పరమ్ among themselves, అధికమ్ very much, ఆక్షిపన్తి ridiculing each other, పీనాన్ stout, భుజాన్ చ arms and, అధికం క్షిపన్తి excessively throwing, అధికమ్ highly, మత్తప్రలాపాన్ intoxicated and blabbering, క్షిపన్తి indulge in vulgar conversation, మత్తాని by intoxication, అన్యోన్యం one to the other, అధిక్షిపన్తి quarrelling.

The intoxicated demons were quarrelling, ridiculing one another bitterly and wildly throwing their stout arms on one another, indulging in incoherent talk, uttering vulgar words.
రక్షాంసి వక్షాంసి చ విక్షిపన్తి గాత్రాణి కాన్తాసు చ విక్షిపన్తి.

రూపాణి చిత్రాణి చ విక్షిపన్తి దృఢాని చాపాని చ విక్షిపన్తి৷৷5.5.12৷৷


వక్షాంసి their chests, విక్షిపన్తి expanding, కాన్తాసు women, గాత్రాణి limbs, విక్షిపన్తి placing, చిత్రాణి wonderful, రూపాణి forms, విక్షిపన్తి assuming, దృఢాని powerful , చాపాని bows, విక్షపన్తి drew, రక్షాంసి demons.

The demons were seen expanding their chests sportively and caressing their wives by placing their limbs on them. They were assuming wonderful forms, and drawing their bows up to their ears.
దదర్శ కాన్తాశ్చ సమాలభన్త్య స్తథా పరాస్తత్ర పునః స్వపన్త్యః.

సురూపవక్త్రాశ్చ తథా హసన్త్యః క్రుద్ధాః పరాశ్చాపి వినిఃశ్వసన్త్య৷৷5.5.13৷৷


కాన్తాః చ even women, సమాలభన్త్య collected there, తథా likewise, తత్ర there, అపరాః పునః others again, స్వసన్త్య sleeping women, తథా likewise, సురూపవక్త్రాః women of beautiful countenance, హసన్త్యః laughing, పరాః చ at others, క్రుద్ధాః angry, వినిఃశ్వసన్త్య: sighing, దదర్శ saw.

He even saw women collected there, their limbs smeared with unguents on their bodies, like wise women with beautiful countenances laughing at others, some sleeping, and others hissing (sighing) like angry serpents.
మహాగజైశ్చాపి తథా నదద్భి: సుపూజితైశ్చాపి తథా సుసద్భిః.

రరాజ వీరైశ్చ వినిఃశ్వసద్భిః హ్రదో భుజఙ్గైరివ నిఃశ్వసద్భిః৷৷5.5.14৷৷


తథా likewise, నదద్భిః trumpeting, మహాగజైశ్చాపి huge elephants, తథా likewise, సుపూజితైః revered, సుసద్భిః చాపి by the well-kept ones, రరాజ stood, వినిఃశ్వసద్భః those breathing heavily, వీరైచ: heroes, నిఃశ్వసద్భిః by hissing, భుజఙ్గైః by serpents, హ్రదః ఇవ like a lake, రరాజ stood.

There were huge elephants trumpeting, respected people, warriors sighing for the lack of enemies (to vanquish). It had a lake infested with hissing snakes.
బుద్ధిప్రధానాన్ రుచిరాభిధానాన్ సంశ్రద్ధధానాన్ జగతః ప్రధానాన్.

నానావిధానాన్ రుచిరాభిధానాన్ దదర్శ తస్యాం పురి యాతుధానాన్৷৷5.5.15৷৷


బుద్ధిప్రధానాన్ intellectuals, రుచిరాభిధానాన్ who were sweet in expression, సంశ్రద్ధధానాన్ who had faith in religion, జగతః in the world, ప్రధానాన్ pre-eminent, నానా విధానాన్ heroes of different kinds, రుచిరాభిధానాన్ of good practices, యాతుధానాన్ demons, తస్యామ్ in that, పురి city, దదర్శ saw.

He saw there in the city of Lanka, demons, who were intellectuals, pleasing in words, with faith in religion, pre-eminent heroes of the world of different kinds, followers of good practices and with lovely names.
ననన్ద దృష్ట్వా స చ తాన్ సురూపాన్నానాగుణానాత్మగుణానురూపాన్.

విద్యోతమానాన్స తదానురూపాన్ దదర్శ కాంశ్చిచ్చ పునర్విరూపాన్৷৷5.5.16৷৷


సః that, సురూపాన్ handsome, నానాగుణాన్ with many virtues, ఆత్మగుణానురూపాన్ whose appearance was in accordance with their virtues, విద్యోతమానాన్ radiating, తాన్ them, దృష్ట్వా seeing, ననన్ద rejoiced, తదా then, సః he, విరూపాన్ ugly, అనురూపాన్ those having similar form, కాఞ్శ్చిత్ చ and some indeed, పునః again, దదర్శ saw.

He rejoiced to see the handsome demons radiant with forms commensurate with their virtues. He also saw some ugly figures, their traits in conformity to their forms.
తతో వరార్హాః సువిశుద్ధభావా స్తేషాం స్త్రియస్తత్ర మహానుభావాః.

ప్రియేషు పానేషు చ సక్తభావా దదర్శ తారా ఇవ సుప్రభావాః৷৷5.5.17৷৷


తతః then, తత్ర there, వరార్హాః adorned with chiocest robes and ornaments, విశుద్ధభావాః women whose minds were pure, మహానుభావాః magnanimous, ప్రియేషు attached to their lovers, పానేషు చ and to drinking (wine), సక్తభావాః gentle, సుప్రభావాః bright, తారాః ఇవ like stars, తేషాం స్త్రియః their wives, దదర్శ saw.

There he saw demonesses adorned with choicest ornaments, their minds attached faithfully to their husbands and bottles of wine. Some of the wives of the demons, however, looked gentle and bright like stars.
శ్రియా జ్వలన్తీస్త్రపయోపగూఢా నిశీథకాలే రమణోపగూఢాః.

దదర్శ కాశ్చిత్ప్రమదోపగూఢా యథా విహఙ్గాః కుసుమోపగూఢాః৷৷5.5.18৷৷


శ్రియా with grace, జ్వలన్తీ shining brightly, త్రపయా with shyness, ఉపగూఢాః embraced, నిశీథకాలే at night, రమణోపగూఢాః embraced by the beloved, ప్రమదోపగూఢాః filled with joy, కుసుమోపగూఢాః adorned with flowers, విహఙ్గాః యథా like birds, కాశ్చిత్ indeed, దదర్శ saw.

There he saw cheerful demonesses shining brightly, abashed by the embrace of their beloveds during the night. He also saw those sporting with their beloveds freely and looking like birds embracing flowers.
అన్యాః పునర్హర్మ్యతలోపవిష్టా స్తత్ర ప్రియాఙ్కేషు సుఖోపవిష్టాః.

భర్తుః ప్రియా ధర్మపరా నివిష్టా దదర్శ ధీమాన్ మదనాభివిష్టాః৷৷5.5.19৷৷


ధీమాన్ Intelligent, హర్మ్యతలోపవిష్టాః seated on the terraces of the mansions, తత్ర there, ప్రియాఙ్కేషు on the laps of their beloved ones, సుఖోపవిష్టాః seated happily, భర్తుః husband's, ప్రియాః beloveds, ధర్మపరాః attachment, మదనాభివిష్టాః overwhelmed with sexual pleasure, నివిష్టాః engaged in love, అన్యాః others, దదర్శ he saw.

Intelligent Hanuman saw demonesses seated happily on the laps of their beloved ones on the terraces of the mansions, exhibiting their attachment to one another, overwhelmed with sexual pleasure.
అప్రావృతాః కాఞ్చనరాజివర్ణాః కాశ్చిత్పరార్థ్యాస్తపనీయవర్ణాః.

పునశ్చ కాశ్చిచ్ఛశలక్ష్మవర్ణాః కాన్తప్రహీణా రుచిరాఙ్గవర్ణాః৷৷5.5.20৷৷


అప్రావృతాః without any veil, కాఞ్చనరాజివర్ణాః of golden hue,పరార్థ్యాః altruistic demonesses, తపనీయవర్ణాః shining with polished gold, కాశ్చిత్ a few, పునశ్చ again, శశలక్ష్మవర్ణాః pale white
like the colour of Moon, కాశ్చిత్ a few, రుచిరాఙ్గవర్ణాః of attractive complexion, కాన్తప్రహీణాః separated from their husbands.

Ogresses without veil, some altruistic, some separated from their husbands looked pale like the Moon, though possessed of polished gold complexion.
తతః ప్రియాన్ ప్రాప్య మనోభిరామాః సుప్రీతియుక్తాః ప్రసమీక్ష్యరామాః.

గృహేషు హృష్టాః పరమాభిరామాః హరిప్రవీరః స దదర్శ రామాః৷৷5.5.21৷৷


హరిప్రవీరః eminent vanara, తతః then, మనోభిరామాః entieing, ప్రియాన్ loved ones, ప్రాప్య having obtained, సుప్రీతియుక్తాః enjoying very much, ప్రసమీక్ష్యరామాః seeing those demonesses, పరమాభిరామాః ecstatic, గృహేషు in the houses, హృష్టాః happily, రామాః demonesses, సః he, దదర్శ saw.

That heroic monkey saw ogresses delighted in the happy company of their loved ones who have joined them, ecstatic wives in the houses.
చన్ద్రప్రకాశాశ్చ హి వక్త్రమాలాః వక్రాక్షిపక్ష్మాశ్చ సునేత్రమాలాః.

విభూషణానాం చ దదర్శ మాలాః శతహ్రదానామివ చారుమాలాః৷৷5.5.22৷৷


చన్ద్రప్రకాశాః radiating like the Moon, వక్త్రమాలాశ్చ rows of faces, వక్రాక్షిపక్ష్మాశ్చ many with sidelong glances and graceful lashes, సునేత్రమాలాః rows of beautiful eyes, శతహ్రదానామ్ of lightning, చారుమాలాః many lovely rows, విభూషణానామ్ of ornaments, మాలాః చ and streaks.

He saw rows of faces of she-demons shining like moonlight with sidelong glances and graceful eye-lashes wearing ornaments resembling charmimg flashes of lightning.
న త్వేవ సీతాం పరమాభిజాతాం పథి స్థితే రాజకులే ప్రజాతామ్.

లతాం ప్రపుల్లామివ సాధు జాతాం దదర్శ తన్వీం మనసాభిజాతామ్৷৷5.5.23৷৷


పరమాభిజాతామ్ born in a noble family, పథి on the right path, స్థితే abiding by, రాజకులే in a royal family, ప్రజాతామ్ born, సాధు excellent,జాతామ్ born,ప్రపుల్లామ్ blossoming, లతామ్ ఇవ like a
creeper, తన్వీమ్ a delicate beautiful lady, మనసా through his mind, అభిజాతామ్ of noble descent, సీతాం తు and Sita, న దదర్శ not seen.

Hanuman could not find Sita anywhere, an excellent lady born in a noble royal family, adopting the right path, a lady delicate like a blossoming creeper of good breed, or so he imagined.
సనాతనే వర్త్మని సన్నివిష్టాం రామేక్షణాం తాం మదనాభివిష్టామ్.

భర్తుర్మనః శ్రీమదనుప్రవిష్టాం స్త్రీభ్యో వరాభ్యశ్చ సదా విశిష్టామ్৷৷5.5.24৷৷


సనాతనే the eternal, వర్త్మని on the path, సన్నివిష్టామ్ abiding, రామేక్షణామ్ a lady of beautiful eyes, మదనాభివిష్టామ్ overwhelmed by love, శ్రీమత్ prosperous, భర్తుః husband's, మనః in mind, అనుప్రవిష్టామ్ ever established, వరాభ్యః compared to the choicest women, స్త్రీభ్యశ్చ compared to wives, సదా ever, విశిష్టామ్ a distinguished demoness, తామ్ her, న దదర్శ not seen.

'Sita must have had a pair of beautiful eyes. She must have been a passionate lady with mind fixed on her glorious husband. Ever established in dharma, she is perhaps a distinguished lady compared to her counterparts (in Lanka).
ఉష్ణార్దితాం సానుసృతాస్రకణ్ఠీమ్ పురా వరార్హోత్తమనిష్కకణ్ఠీమ్.

సుజాతపక్ష్మామభిరక్తకణ్ఠీం వనేప్రవృత్తామివ నీలకణ్ఠీమ్৷৷5.5.25৷৷


ఉష్ణార్దితామ్ shedding hot tears, సానుసృతాస్రకణ్ఠీమ్ with her throat choked with incessant tears, పురా earlier, వరార్హోత్తమనిష్కకణ్ఠీమ్ wearing costly ornaments on the neck, సుజాతపక్ష్మామ్ who has beautiful eyelashes, అభిరక్తకణ్ఠీమ్ a woman of sweet, loving voice, వనే in the forest, అప్రవృత్తామ్ wandering, నీలకణ్ఠీమివ like a pea-hen.

She whose neck was adorned with costly ornaments earlier must be shedding hot tears now, her throat choked with grief. With her beautiful eyelashes and a sweet loving voice, she would be now like a pea-hen wandering in the woods.
అవ్యక్తరేఖామివ చన్ద్రరేఖాం పాంసుప్రదిగ్ధామివ హేమరేఖామ్.

క్షతప్రరూఢామివ బాణరేఖాం వాయుప్రభిన్నామివ మేఘరేఖామ్৷৷5.5.26৷৷


అవ్యక్తరేఖామ్ an invisible ray, చన్ద్రరేఖామివ like the rays of the Moon, పాంసుప్రదిగ్ధామ్ covered with dust, హేమరేఖామివ like a streak of gold, క్షతప్రరూఢామ్ scar of superficially healed wound, బాణరేఖామివ path of an arrow, వాయుప్రభిన్నామ్ swept off by the wind, మేఘరేఖామివ like a flake of cloud.

She would be like a barely visible ray of the Moon, like a streak of gold covered with dust, like an unhealed scar of a wound caused by an arrow only superficially covered and like a flake of cloud swept off by the wind.
సీతామపశ్యన్ మనుజేశ్వరస్య రామస్య పత్నీం వదతాం వరస్య.

బభూవ దుఃఖాభిహతశ్చిరస్య ప్లవఙ్గమో మన్ద ఇవాచిరస్య৷৷5.5.27৷৷


ప్లవఙ్గమః monkey, వదతామ్ among those who are good at speech, వరస్య of the best ones, మనుజేశ్వరస్య of the lord of men, రామస్య Rama's, పత్నీమ్ wife, సీతామ్ Sta, చిరస్య for a short while, అపశ్యన్ not able to find, దుఃఖాభిహితః hit by grief, అచిరస్య for a while, మన్దః ఇవ as though dull, బభూవ became.

Hanuman stood grief-stricken, having (unsuccessfully) searched for a long time for the wife of Rama, the lord of men. The highly eloquent was now despondent. For a while he looked dull and dejected.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే పఞ్చమస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
