[Monkey leaders enter Madhuvan on the outskirts of Kishkinda and destroy it in their drunkenness.]

తతో జామ్బవతో వాక్యమగృహ్ణన్త వనౌకసః.

అఙ్గదప్రముఖా వీరా హనుమాంశ్చ మహాకపిః৷৷5.61.1৷৷


తతః then, అఙ్గదప్రముఖాః Angada and other leaders, వీరాః heroes, వనౌకసః wanderers of the forest, vanaras, మహాకపిః great monkey, హనుమాంశ్చ and Hanuman, జామ్బవతః Jambavan's, వాక్యమ్ these words, అగృహ్ణన్త agreed upon.

In the midst of all the leaders of the monkeys including Angada, Hanuman accepted Jambavan's advice.
ప్రీతిమన్తస్తతః సర్వే వాయుపుత్రపరస్పరాః.

మహేన్ద్రాద్రిం పరిత్యజ్య పుప్లువుః ప్లవగర్షభాః৷৷5.61.2৷৷

మేరుమన్దరసఙ్కాశా మత్తా ఇవ మహాగజాః.

ఛాదయన్త ఇవాకాశం మహాకాయా మహాబలాః৷৷5.61.3৷৷

సభాజ్యమానం భూతైస్తమాత్మవన్తం మహాబలమ్.

హనూమన్తం మహావేగం వహన్త ఇవ దృష్టిభిః৷৷5.61.4৷৷

రాఘవే చార్థనిర్వవృత్తిం కర్తుం చ పరమం యశః.

సమాధాయ సమృద్ధార్థాః సర్వేసిద్ధిభిరున్నతా৷৷5.61.5৷৷

ప్రియాఖ్యానోన్ముఖాః సర్వే సర్వే యుద్ధాభినన్దినః.

సర్వే రామప్రతీకారే నిశ్చితార్థా మనస్స్వినః৷৷5.61.6৷৷


తతః then, మేరుమన్దరసఙ్కాశాః resembling Meru mountain, మత్తాః in rut, గజాః ఇవ like elephants, ఆకాశమ్ sky, ఛాదయన్తః ఇవ as though covering the sky, మహాకాయాః of huge body, మహాబలాః mighty, ప్లవగర్షభాః bulls among leaping monkeys, సర్వే all, మహేన్ద్రాద్రిమ్ from the summit of Mahendra mountain, పరిత్యజ్య left, ప్రీతిమన్తః very happily, వాయుపుత్రపురస్సరాః led by the son of the Wind-god, భూతైః all creatures, సభాజ్యమానమ్ praised by, ఆత్మవన్తమ్ self-confident, మహాబలమ్ mighty, మహావేగమ్ swift, హనూమన్తమ్ Hanuman, దృష్టిభిః seeing, వహన్తః ఇవ like seeing without blinking, రాఘవే Rama's, అర్థనిర్వవృతతిమ్ remaining in state of offering, పరమమ్ supreme, యశః fame, కర్తుమ్ to do, సమాధాయ concentrating, సమృద్ధార్థాః better than others, కర్మసిద్ధిభిః accomplished ones, ఉన్నతాః eager, పుప్లువుః jumping vanaras, సర్వే all, ప్రియాఖ్యానోన్ముఖాః pleasantly talking among themselves, సర్వే all, యుద్ధాభినన్దినః anxious to wage a war, మనస్స్వినః determined, సర్వే all, రామప్రతీకారే to please, నిశ్చితార్థాః determined.

Thereafter led by Hanuman, all the vanaras left Mahendra mountain and marched very happily. The vanaras were strong and huge like elephants and resembled mountain Meru. Moreover when they leaped up they seemed to cover the sky (so it was difficult to tell their numbers). Since Hanuman had accomplished the task, the vanaras were praising his strength, his swiftness and courage. They were looking at Hanuman without blinking their eyes, and seemed as though they were carrying him by their eyes. They were determined in their minds to please Rama. Remaining in a state of offering themselves, some of them more accomplished than others, collected together eager to wage war and talking pleasantly among themselves having resolved to assist Rama.
ప్లవమానాః ఖమాప్లుత్య తతస్తే కాననౌకసః.

నన్దనోపమయాసేదుర్వనం ద్రుమలతాయుతమ్৷৷5.61.7৷৷


తతః then, తే they, కాననౌకసః forest-dwellers, monkeys, ఖమ్ sky, ఆఫ్లుత్య rising up, ప్లవమానాః started leaping, ద్రుమలతాయుతమ్ filled with trees and creepers, నన్దనోపమమ్ like the garden of Indra, వనమ్ garden, ఆసేదుః entered.

"The monkeys leaped into the sky and entered the garden that resembled the garden of Indra filled with trees and creepers.
యత్తన్మధువనం నామ సుగ్రీవస్యాభిరక్షితమ్.

అధృష్యం సర్వభూతానాం సర్వభూతమనోహరమ్৷৷5.61.8৷৷


అభిరక్షితమ్ well-protected, సర్వభూతానామ్ all creatures, అధృష్యమ్ difficult to access, సర్వభూతమనోహరమ్ enchanting to all beings, యత్ that, సుగ్రీవస్య Sugriva's, మధువనం నామ Madhuvanam, తత్ that.

The Madhuvanam of Sugriva was well-protected and was difficult to access for the vanaras. It was enchating to all beings.
యద్రక్షతి మహావీర్య స్సదా దధిముఖః కపిః.

మాతులః కపిముఖ్యస్య సుగ్రీవస్య మహాత్మనః৷৷5.61.9৷৷


మహాత్మనః great, కపిముఖ్యస్య foremost of monkeys, సుగ్రీవస్య Sugriva's, మాతులః maternal uncle, మహావీర్యః of great valour, దధిముఖః Dadhimukha, కపిః monkey, యత్ that which, సదా always, రక్షతి protected.

Dadhimukha, the foremost of all monkeys, of great valour and the maternal uncle of Sugriva was the care-taker of the garden.
తే తద్వనముపాగమ్య బభూవుః పరమోత్కటాః.

వానరా వానరేన్ద్రస్య మనః కాన్తతమం మహత్৷৷5.61.10৷৷


తే those, వానరాః vanaras, వానరేన్ద్రస్య Vanara king's, మనఃకాన్తతమమ్ delighting to all, మహత్ extensive, తత్ that, వనమ్ garden, ఉపాగమ్య on reaching, పరమోత్కటాః highly rejoiced, బభూవుః became.

On reaching the vanara king's extensive, delightful garden all the vanaras highly rejoiced.
తతస్తే వానరా హృష్టా దృష్టవా మధువనం మహత్.

కుమారమభ్యయాచన్త మధూని మధుపిఙ్గలాః৷৷5.61.11৷৷


తతః then, మధుపిఙ్గలాః honey-coloured monkeys, తే వానరాః those vanaras, మహత్ large, మధువనమ్ Madhuvanam, దృష్ట్వా seeing, హృష్టాః happy, కుమారమ్ young Angada, మధూని honey, అభ్యయాచన్త sought permission.

The honey-coloured monkeys felt happy on seeing the Madhuvanam and sought Angada's permission to drink honey.
తతః కుమారస్తాన్ వృద్ధాన్ జామ్బవత్ప్రముఖాన్ కపీన్.

అనుమాన్య దదౌ తేషాం విసర్గం మధుభిక్షణే৷৷5.61.12৷৷


తతః then, కుమారః young Angada, వృద్ధాన్ old, తాన్ him, జామ్బవత్ప్రముఖాన్ chief of monkeys Jambavan, కపీన్ monkey, అనుమాన్య permitting, తేషామ్ them, మధుభక్షణే to drink honey, నిసర్గమ్ leave, దదౌ gave.

Young Angada asked old Jambavan's permission for the vanaras to drink honey and Jambavan permitted them.
తతశ్చానుమతా స్సర్వే సమ్ప్రహృష్టా వనౌకసః.

ముదితాః ప్రేరితాశ్చాపి ప్రనృత్యన్తోభవంస్తదా৷৷5.61.13৷৷


తతః then, సర్వే all, వనౌకసః forest-dwellers, monkeys, అనుమతాః having been permitted, సమ్ప్రహృష్టాః very happily, తదా then, ప్రేరితాః motivated, ముదితాః rejoiced, ప్రనృత్యన్తః started dancing, అభవన్ they.

Permitted thus to drink honey the forest-dwelling monkeys were motivated. They rejoiced very happily and started dancing.
గాయన్తి కేచిత్ప్రణమన్తి కేచిన్నృత్యన్తి కేచిత్ప్రహసన్తి కేచిత్.

పతన్తి కేచిద్విచరన్తి కేచిత్ల్పవన్తి కేచిత్ప్రలపన్తి కేచిత్৷৷5.61.14৷৷


కేచిత్ some, గాయన్తి sang, కేచిత్ some, ప్రణమన్తి prostrated, కేచిత్ few, నృత్యన్తి danced,
కేచిత్ some, ప్రహసన్తి laughed, కేచిత్ while others, పతన్తి fell down, కేచిత్ some, విచరన్తి roamed, కేచిత్ few, ప్లవన్తి jumped up, కేచిత్ some, ప్రలపన్తి jumped up.

Some sang, some prostrated on the ground, some danced, while some laughed, some jumped from the tree, some roamed about and some jumped up and down.
పరస్పరం కేచిదుపాశ్రయన్తే పరస్పరం కేచిదుపాక్రమన్తే.

పరస్పరం కేచిదుపబ్రువన్తే పరస్పరం కేచిదుపారమన్తే৷৷5.61.15৷৷


కేచిత్ some, పరస్పరమ్ to one another, ఉపాశ్రయన్తే comforted, కేచిత్ some, పరస్పరమ్ one another, ఉపాక్రమన్తే held, కేచిత్ some, పరస్పరమ్ one another, ఉపబ్రువన్తే exchanged secrets, కేచిత్ some, పరస్పరమ్ to one another, ఉపారమన్తే entertained.

While some supported one another, some held each other, some exchanged secrets with one another, some entertained one another.
ద్రుమాద్ద్రుమం కేచిదభిద్రవన్తే క్షితౌ నగాగ్రాన్నిపతన్తి కేచిత్.

మహీతలాత్కేచిదుదీర్ణవేగా మహాద్రుమాగ్రాణ్యభిసమ్పతన్తి৷৷5.61.16৷৷


కేచిత్ some, ద్రుమాత్ from tree, ద్రుమమ్ to another tree, అభిద్రవన్తే ran, కేచిత్ some, నగాగ్రాత్ from the top of tree jumped down, క్షితౌ broken, నిపతన్తి fell down, కేచిత్ some, ఉదీర్ణవేగాః very swift ones, మహాతలాత్ from the huge trees, మహాద్రుమాగ్రాణి from the top of trees, అభిసమ్పతన్తి fell down.

While some ran from one tree to another, some jumped down from broken branches, and some swift-footed ones fell down from the top of trees.
గాయన్తమన్యః ప్రహసన్నుపైతి హసన్తమన్యః ప్రరుదన్నుపైతి.

రుదన్తమన్యః ప్రణుదన్నుపైతి నుదన్తమన్యః ప్రణదన్నుపైతి৷৷5.61.17৷৷


గాయన్తమ్ singing, అన్యః others, ప్రహనమ్ laughing, ఉపైతి on who fell, హసన్తమ్ laughing, అన్యః others, ప్రరుదన్ went roaring aloud, ఉపైతి fell, రుదన్తమ్ roaring, అన్యః others, ప్రణుదన్
pushing, ఉపైతి fell on others, నుదన్తమ్ encouraged to do some thing, అన్యః others, ప్రణదన్ shouting, ఉపైతి fell over.

While one was singing, others approached him laughing; while some were laughing others fell on them laughing excessively. While some were roaring, others went pushing them down. While some were encouraged to do something others shouted at them.
సమాకులం తత్కపిసైన్యమాసీన్మధుప్రసానోత్కటసత్త్వచేష్టమ్.

న చాత్ర కశ్చిన్న బభూవ మత్తో న చాత్ర కశ్చిన్న బభూవ తృప్తః৷৷5.61.18৷৷


మధుప్రసానోత్కటసత్త్వచేష్టమ్ lost control due to drinking honey-wine, తత్ that, కపిసైన్యమ్ army of monkeys, సమాకులమ్ collected together, ఆసీత్ quietly seated, అత్ర there, కశ్చిత్ not even one, మత్తః intoxicated, న బభూవ not there, ఇతి న not only this, అత్ర there, కశ్చిత్ none, తృప్తః satisfied, న బభూవ ఇతి న not there like that.

The army of monkeys had lost control over their bodies due to drinking of honey-wine. Not even one was quietly seated there. Not even one was not intoxicated. Not only that, none were satisfied.
తతో వనం తత్పరిభక్ష్యమాణం ద్రుమాంశ్చ విధ్వంసితపత్రపుష్పాన్.

సమీక్ష్య కోపాద్ధధివక్రనామా నివారయామాస కపిః కపీంస్తాన్৷৷5.61.19৷৷


తతః that, దధివక్త్రనామా named Dadhimukha, కపిః monkey, పరిభక్ష్యమాణమ్ drank all the honey-wine, తత్ that, వనమ్ garden, విధ్వంసితపత్రపుష్పాన్ leaves, flowers, ద్రుమాంశ్చ and trees, సమీక్ష్య seeing, కోపాత్ in anger, తాన్ కపీన్ the monkeys, నివారయామాస asked them to stop and get out.

Beholding the destruction wrought by the vanaras to the garden, trees, leaves and flowers, and having drunk all the honey, Dadhimukha angrily asked them to stop and get out.
స తైః ప్రవృద్ధైః పరిభర్త్స్యమానో వనస్య గోప్తా హరివీరవృద్ధః.

చకార భూయో మతిముగ్రతేజా వనస్య రక్షాం ప్రతి వానరేభ్యః৷৷5.61.20৷৷


ప్రవృద్ధైః by the elderly, తైః by both, పరిభర్త్స్యమానః reprimanded, వనస్య garden's, గోప్తా care-taker, హరివీరవృద్ధః old monkey leader, ఉగ్రతేజాః powerful one, వానరేభ్యః by vanaras, వనస్య garden's, రక్షాంప్రతి to protect, భూయః again, మతిమ్ in his mind, చకార thought over.

The elderly Dadhimukha who was the powerful protector of the garden reprimanded them and devised yet again a plan to protect it.
ఉవాచ కాంశ్చిత్పరుషాణి ధృష్టమసక్తమన్యాంశ్చ తలైర్జఘాన.

సమేత్య కైశ్చిత్కలహం చకార తథైవ సామ్నోపజగామ కాంశ్చిత్৷৷5.61.21৷৷


కాంశ్చిత్ to some, పరుషాణి in harsh words, ఉవాచ spoken, అన్యాంశ్చ to others, అసక్తమ్ not to say, తలైః with the palm of the hand, ధృష్టమ్ slapped, జఘాన hind part, సమేత్య with good words, కైశ్చిత్ with some, కలహమ్ quarrel, చకార made, తథైవ in the same way, కాంశ్చిత్ some, సామ్నా approached, ఉపజగామ in a conciliatory manner.

He spoke harshly to some, to others he asked not to talk, some he slapped on the hind part with the palm of his hand. To some he spoke pleasantly and with some he quarrelled. And to others he spoke in a conciliatory manner.
స తైర్మదాత్సంపరివార్య వాక్యైర్భలాచ్ఛ తేన ప్రతివార్యమాణైః.

ప్రధర్షితస్త్యక్తభయై స్సమేత్య ప్రకృష్యతే చాప్యనవేక్ష్య దోషమ్৷৷5.61.22৷৷


తైర్మదాత్ in their drunkenness, అప్రతివార్యవాక్యైః speaking in abusive language, తేన by them, బలాత్ by their strength, ప్రతివార్యమాణైః retaliated, త్యక్తభయైః devoid of fear, తైః those, ప్రధర్షితః roared, సః that, దోషం చ mistakes only, అనవేక్ష్య not seeing, సమ్యే held, ప్రకృష్యతే చ pulled.

In their drunkenness they were using abusive language and with their strength they retaliated without fear. They invaded without considering their mistakes. They caught hold of Dadhimukha and pulled him.
నఖైస్తుదన్తో దశనైర్దశన్త స్తలైశ్చ పాదైశ్చ సమాపయన్తః.

మదాత్కపిం తం కపయ స్సమగ్రా మహావనం నిర్విషయం చ చక్రుః৷৷5.61.23৷৷


సమగ్రాః all of them together, కపయః that monkey, మదాత్ in their drunkenness, నఖైః with nails, తుదన్తః scratched, దశనైః with teeth, దశన్తః bitten, తలైశ్చ with palms, పాదైశ్చ legs, తం కపిమ్ the monkeys, సమాపయన్తః getting together, మహావనమ్ great garden, నిర్విషయమ్ completely, చక్రుః looted.

In their drunkenness some monkeys scratched Dadhimukha violently with their nails, some bit him with their teeth and others slapped and kicked him with their palms and legs.Getting together they looted the garden completely.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే ఏకషష్టితమ స్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfirst sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
