[Hanuman describes to Rama the manner in which he warded off Sita's doubts regarding monkeys' crossing the ocean and rescuing her.]

అథాహముత్తరం దేవ్యా పునరుక్త స్ససమ్భ్రమమ్.

తవ స్నేహాన్నరవ్యాఘ్ర సౌహార్దాదనుమాన్య వై৷৷5.68.1৷৷


నరవ్యాఘ్ర tiger among men, అథ and then, అహమ్ I, దేవ్యా to Sita, తవ your, స్నేహాత్ love, సౌహార్దాత్ having affection, అనుమాన్య confident, పునః again, ఉత్తరమ్ addressed, ససమ్భ్రమమ్ hurrying up, ఉక్తః said.

"O tiger among men! In view of her regards for me and and her love for you she was confident and once again addressed me:
ఏవం బహువిధం వాచ్యో రామో దాశరథిస్త్వయా.

యథా మామాప్నుయాచ్ఛీఘ్రం హత్వా రావణమాహవే৷৷5.68.2৷৷


దాశరథిః Dasaratha's, రామః Rama, ఆహవే in battle, రావణమ్ Ravana, శీఘ్రమ్ quickly, హత్వా slaying, మామ్ me, యథా so that, ఆప్నుయాత్ he will get me, తథా so that, ఏవమ్ in that way, బహువిధమ్ in many ways, వాచ్యః you may appeal.

'You may appeal to Rama, the son of Dasaratha in many ways, that he should come quickly and slay Ravana in the battle and get me back.
యది వా మన్యసే వీర వసైకాహమరిన్దమ.

కస్మింశ్చిత్సంవృతే దేశే విక్రాన్తశ్శ్వో గమిష్యసి৷৷5.68.3৷৷


అరిన్దమ crusher of enemies!, వీర brave, మన్యసే యది I wish, కస్మింశ్చిత్ for a while, సంవృతే around, దేశే this place, ఏకాహమ్ in a secluded place, వస stay, విశ్రాన్తః after resting, శ్వః tomorrow, గమిష్యసి (you) may leave.

'O crusher of enemies! O brave Hanuman! I wish you rest for a while in a secluded place around here and leave tomorrow .
మమ చాప్యల్పభాగ్యాయాస్సాన్నిధ్యాత్తవ వీర్యవన్.

అస్య శోకవిపాకస్య ముహూర్తం స్యాద్విమోక్షణమ్৷৷5.68.4৷৷


వీర్యవన్ valiant (Hanuman), తవ your, సాన్నిధ్యాత్ by your presence, అల్పభాగ్యాయాః less fortunate one, మమ to me, అస్య your, శోకపాకస్య from sorrow, ముహూర్తమ్ for a while, విమోక్షణమ్ relieved, స్యాత్ will be.

'O valiant (Hanuman)! by your presence here, the less fortunate me, will be relieved of sorrow for a while.
గతే హి త్వయి విక్రాన్తే పునరాగమనాయ వై.

ప్రాణానామపి సన్దేహో మమ స్యాన్నాత్ర సంశయః৷৷5.68.5৷৷


విక్రాన్తే courageous!, త్వయి your, హరిశార్దూల tiger among monkeys, పునరాగమనాయ by your return, గతే gone, మమ me, ప్రాణానామపి even my life, సన్దేహః doubt, స్యాత్ will be, అత్ర that, సందేహః doubt, న no.

'O courageous tiger among monkeys! when you depart (abruptly) I doubt if I would be alive by your return.
తవాదర్శనజశ్శోకో భూయో మాం పరితాపయేత్.

దుఃఖాద్ధుఃఖపరాభూతాం దుర్గతాం దుఃఖభాగినీమ్৷৷5.68.6৷৷


దుఃఖాత్ afflicted by sorrow, దుఃఖభాగినీమ్ unfortunate one, దుర్గతామ్ tormented, మామ్ me, తవ your, అదర్శనజః not seeing you, శోకః grief, భూయః will be, పరితాపయేత్ will be lamenting further.

'I am an unfortunate one, afflicted by sorrow and tormented (by demons). If I am not
able to see you I will be lamenting in grief.
అయం చ వీర సన్దేహస్తిష్ఠతీవ మమాగ్రతః.

సుమహాంస్త్వత్సహాయేషు హర్యృక్షేషు హరీశ్వర৷৷5.68.7৷৷


వీర brave, హరీశ్వర vanara, త్వత్సహాయేషు your helpers, హర్యృక్షేషు the vanaras and bears, అయమ్ this, సుమహాన్ highly, సన్దేహః doubt, మమ అగ్రతః I have, తిష్ఠతీవ will cross this ocean.

'O brave vanaras! I have great doubts about your assistants the vanaras and bears, crossing the ocean.
కథం ను ఖలు దుష్పారం తరిష్యన్తి మహోదధిమ్.

తాని హర్యృక్షసైన్యాని తౌ వా నరవరాత్మజౌ৷৷5.68.8৷৷


తాని those, హర్యృక్షసైన్యాని the army of vanaras and bears, తౌ both, నరవరాత్మజౌ princes Rama and Lakshmana, దుష్పారమ్ impassable, మహోదధిమ్ great ocean, కథం ను how will, తరిష్యన్తి be able to cross.

'How will the vanaras and bears cross this great, impassable ocean? How will the princes Rama and Lakshmna be able to cross it?
త్రయాణామేవ భూతానాం సాగరస్యాస్య లఙ్ఘనే.

శక్తిస్స్యాద్వైనతేయస్య తవ వా మారుతస్య వా৷৷5.68.9৷৷


అస్య that, సాగరస్య ocean, లఙ్ఘనే to cross, వైనతేయస్య వా to Garuda, తవ వా or you, మారుతస్య వా or wind god, త్రయాణామ్ three of you, భూతానామ్ among all beings, శక్తిః the capacity, స్యాత్ have.

'Only three among all beings, Garuda, the Wind-god and you have the capacity to cross the ocean.
తదస్మిన్ కార్యనిర్యోగే వీరైవం దురతిక్రమే.

కిం పశ్యసి సమాధానం బ్రూహి కార్యవిదాం వరః৷৷5.68.10৷৷


వీర hero, తత్ that, ఏవమ్ in that way, దురతిక్రమే who knows to succeed, అస్మి I, కార్యనిర్యోగే difficult to accomplish, కిమ్ what, సమాధానమ్ expedient, పశ్యసి are you perceiving, బ్రూహి tell me, కార్యవిదామ్ to accomplish the task, వర హి foremost indeed.

'O heroic Hanuman! you know how to succeed. But I wish to know what expedient you have to accomplish which is difficult by all means. O foremost vanara, please tell me .
కామమస్య త్వమేవైకః కార్యస్య పరిసాధనే.

పర్యాప్తః పరవీరఘ్న యశస్యస్తే బలోదయః৷৷5.68.11৷৷


పరవీరఘ్న slayer of enemy heroes!, అస్య కార్యస్య in this task, పరిసాధనే ability to succeed, త్వమ్ for you, ఏక ఏవ single handed, పర్యాప్తః కామమ్ to accomplish the desired object, తే to you, ఫలోదయః having succeed, యశస్యః you will be renowned.

'O Slayer of enemy heroes! you have the ability to accomplsh this task single-handed. By succeeding in accomplishing the objective you will become renowned (and not Rama).
బలై స్సమగ్రైర్యది మాం హత్వా రావణమాహవే.

విజయీ స్వాం పురీం రామో నయేత్తత్స్యాద్యశస్కరమ్৷৷5.68.12৷৷


రామః Rama, రావణమ్ Ravana's, సమగ్రైః entire, బలైః with army, ఆహవే in battle, హత్వా slaying, విజయీ becoming victorious, స్వామ్ his, పురీమ్ city, మామ్ me, నయేద్యది will take, తత్ that, యశస్కరమ్ glorious, స్యాత్ will be.

'When Rama slays Ravana and his entire army and takes me to his city after becoming victorious it will add glory to him.
యథాహం తస్య వీరస్య వనాదుపధినా హృతా.

రక్షసా తద్భయాదేవ తథా నార్హతి రాఘవః৷৷5.68.13৷৷


అహమ్ I am, రక్షసా by the demon, వీరస్య valiant one, ఉపధినా cheat, యథా like, హృతా abducted, తథా that way, తద్భయాదేవ out of fear of, రాఘవః Rama, నార్హతి not right.

'Tell valiant Rama not to take me back the way Ravana, the demon abducted me out of fear. Which is not right.
బలైస్తు సఙ్కులాం కృత్వా లఙ్కాం పరబలార్దనః.

మాం నయేద్యది కాకుత్స్థస్తత్తస్య సదృశం భవేత్৷৷5.68.14৷৷


పరబలార్ధనః one who is a slayer of the enemy army, కాకుత్స్థః Kakutstha, లఙ్కామ్ Lanka, శరైః with arrows, సఙ్కులామ్ filling, కృత్వా does, మామ్ me, నయేద్యది takes, తత్ that, తస్య to him, సదృశమ్ pleasing to look, భవేత్ will be.

'If Rama, the slayer of the enemy army, could fill Lanka with his arrows and take me that will be a good sight for him to see.
తద్యథా తస్య విక్రాన్తమనురూపం మహాత్మనః.

భవేదాహవశూరస్య తథా త్వముపపాదయ৷৷5.68.15৷৷


తత్ that, మహాత్మనః great soul, ఆహవశూరస్య exalted hero, తస్య his, అనురూపమ్ according to his might, విక్రాన్తమ్ exhibiting, యథా that way, భవేత్ will be, తథా like, త్వమ్ you, ఉపపాదయ make arrangement.

'You may make arrangement in such a way that the exalted hero Rama exhibits his might according to his stature'.
తదర్థోపహితం వాక్యం ప్రశ్రితం హేతుసంహితమ్.

నిశమ్యాహం తత శ్శేషం వాక్యముత్తరమబ్రువమ్৷৷5.68.16৷৷


అహమ్ I am, అర్థోపహితమ్ meaningful, ప్రశ్రితం courteous, హేతుసంహితమ్ reasonable, తత్ those, వాక్యమ్ words, నిశమ్య hearing, తతః then, శేషమ్ rest, ఉత్తరమ్ reply, వాక్యమ్ words, అబ్రవమ్ said.

"Hearing the meaningful, courteous and reasonable words of Sita, I replied :
దేవి హర్యృక్షసైన్యానామీశ్వరః ప్లవతాం వరః.

సుగ్రీవస్సత్త్వసమ్పన్నస్తవార్థే కృతనిశ్చయః৷৷5.68.17৷৷


దేవి O queen, హర్యృక్షసైన్యానామ్ army of bears and vanaras, ఈశ్వరః lord, ప్లవతాం వరః foremost among leaping beings, సత్త్వసమ్పన్నః richly endowed with strength, సుగ్రీవః Sugriva, తవ అర్ధే your task, కృతనిశ్చయః resolved.

'O queen! The lord of the army of bears and vanaras who is the foremost among the monkeys is endowed with enough strength and has resolved to rescue you.
తస్య విక్రమసమ్పన్నాస్సత్త్వవన్తో మహాబలాః.

మన స్సఙ్కల్పసమ్పాతా నిదేశే హరయః స్థితాః৷৷5.68.18৷৷


విక్రమసమ్పన్నాః mighty, సత్త్వవన్తః powerful, మహాబలాః tough, మనః సఙ్కల్పసమ్పాతాః having the speed of thought, హరయః monkeys, తస్య his, నిదేశే under his command, స్థితాః remain.

'Mighty, powerful and tough monkeys who have the speed of thought are under the command of Sugriva.
యేషాం నోపరి నాధస్తాన్న తిర్యక్సజ్జతే గతిః.

న చ కర్మసు సీదన్తి మహత్స్వమితతేజసః৷৷5.68.19৷৷


యేషామ్ all of them, గతిః can go, ఉపరి in the sky, న సజ్జతే not obstructed, అధస్తాత్ in the underworld, న not, తిర్యక్ obliquely, న not, అమితతేజసః very brilliant, మహత్సు very great, కర్మసు task also, న సీదన్తి without any difficulty.

అసకృత్తైర్మహాభాగైర్వానరైర్బలదర్పితైః.

ప్రదక్షిణీకృతా భూమిర్వాయుమార్గానుసారిభిః৷৷5.68.20৷৷


మహాభాగైః great lady, బలదర్పితైః by extraordinary might, వాయుమార్గానుసారిభిః flying with the wind, తైః they, వానరైః vanaras, భూమిః earth, ప్రదక్షిణీకృతా have circumambulated.

'O great lady! the mighty vanaras of extraordinary strength can fly with the wind and have even circumambulated the earth.
మద్విశిష్టాశ్చ తుల్యాశ్చ సన్తి తత్ర వనౌకసః.

మత్తః ప్రత్యవరః కశ్చిన్నాస్తి సుగ్రీవసన్నిధౌ৷৷5.68.21৷৷


తత్ర there, మద్విశిష్టాశ్చ greater than, తుల్యాశ్చ equals, వనౌకసః monkeys, సన్తి are there, మత్తః compared to me, ప్రత్యవరః less valiant, కశ్చిత్ none, సుగ్రీవసన్నిధౌ in front of Sugriva, నాస్తి not there.

'There are monkeys who are more powerful than me or equal to me. None are less strong than me or Sugriva.
అహం తావదిహ ప్రాప్తః కిం పునస్తే మహాబలాః.

న హి ప్రకృష్టాః ప్రేత్యన్తే ప్రేష్యన్తే హీతరే జనాః৷৷5.68.22৷৷


అహం తావత్ therefore I, ఇహ here, అనుప్రాప్తః have come, మహాబలాః highly powerful ones, తే they, కిం పునః why to say again, ప్రకృష్టాః superior, న ప్రేత్యన్తే హి indeed do not send, ఇతరే others, జనాః people, ప్రేష్యన్తే హి will send.

'When I could come here, what to speak of the mightier monkeys?, People do not send the superior ones on errand, but send only the juniors.
తదలం పరితాపేన దేవి మన్యుర్వ్యపైతు తే.

ఏకోత్పాతేన తే లఙ్కామేష్యన్తి హరియూథపాః৷৷5.68.23৷৷


దేవి O noble lady!, తత్ that, పరితాపేన lamentation, అలమ్ enough, తే your, శోకః sorrow, వ్యపైతు will fill this place, తే they, హరియూథపాః vanara army, ఏకోత్పాతేన in one jump, లఙ్కామ్ Lanka, ఏష్యన్తి will fly to reach.

'O noble lady! give up your lamentation. Enough of sorrowing. The vanara army will fly and reach this place at one leap and fill it.
మమ పృష్ఠగతౌ తౌ చ చన్ద్రసూర్యావివోదితౌ.

త్వత్సకాశం మహాభాగే నృసింహావాగమిష్యతః৷৷5.68.24৷৷


మహాభాగే O noble lady!, నృసింహౌ lions among men, తౌ చ they both, మమ my, పృష్ఠగతౌ on back, ఉదితౌ ascend, చన్ద్రసూర్యావివ like Sun and Moon, త్వత్సకాశమ్ newly risen, ఆగమిష్యతః will reach here.

'O noble lady! the lions among men, Rama and Lakshmana who resemble Sun and Moon will ascend on my back and reach here.
అరిఘ్నం సింహసఙ్కాశం క్షిప్రం ద్రక్ష్యసి రాఘవమ్.

లక్ష్మణం చ ధనుష్పాణిం లఙ్కాద్వారముపస్థితమ్৷৷5.68.25৷৷


లఙ్కాద్వారమ్ at the entrance of Lanka, ఉపస్థితమ్ standing, అరిఘ్నమ్ slayer of enemies, సింహసఙ్కాశమ్ like a lion, తం రాఘవమ్ that Rama, ధనుష్పాణిమ్ wielding bow in hand, లక్ష్మణం చ and Lakshmana, క్షిప్రమ్ very soon, ద్రక్ష్యసి will see.

'You will see the lion-like Rama, a slayer of enemies and Lakshmana wielding bow in hand standing at the entrance of Lanka very soon.
నఖదంష్ట్రాయుధాన్ వీరాన్ సింహశార్దూలవిక్రమాన్.

వానరాన్వారణోన్ద్రాభాన్ క్షిప్రం ద్రక్షసి సఙ్గతాన్৷৷5.68.26৷৷

శైలామ్బుదనికాశానాం లఙ్కామలయసానుషు.

నర్దతాం కపిముఖ్యానామచిరాచ్ఛ్రోష్యసి స్వనమ్৷৷5.68.27৷৷


శైలామ్బుదనికాశానామ్ like rain-clouds on the mountain, లఙ్కామలయసానుషు Lanka's mountain Malaya, నర్దతామ్ roaring like lion, కపిముఖ్యానామ్ generals of monkey army, స్వనమ్ sounds, అచారత్ making, శ్రోష్యసి will hear.

'You will hear before long the shouts of generals of the vanaras who resemble rain-clouds on the mountain roaring like lions from the Malaya mountain of Lanka.
నివృత్తవనవాసం చ త్వయా సార్ధమరిన్దమమ్.

అభిషిక్తమయోధ్యాయాం క్షిప్రం ద్రక్ష్యసి రాఘవమ్৷৷5.68.28৷৷


నివృత్తవనవాసమ్ completing the exile in the forest, అరిన్దమమ్ slayer of enemies, అయోధ్యాయామ్ in Ayodhya, త్వయా సార్ధమ్ along with you, అభిషిక్తమ్ crowned, రాఘవమ్ Rama, క్షిప్రమ్ soon, ద్రక్ష్యసి will see.

'You will soon see Rama, the slayer of enemies crowned as king of Ayodhya with you, having duly completed the term of exile in the forest'.
తతో మయా వాగ్భిరదీనభాషిణా శివాభిరిష్టాభిరభిప్రసాదితా.

జగామ శాన్తిం మమ మైథిలాత్మజా తవాపి శోకేన తదాభిపీడితా৷৷5.68.29৷৷


తతః then, తవ your, శోకేనాపి also in grief, తదా then, అభిపీడితా much grief, మైథిలాత్మజా princess of Mithila, అదీనభాషిణా soothing words, మయా of me, శివాభిః auspicious also, ఇష్టాభిః welcome, మమ my, వాగ్భి: words, అభిప్రసాదితా having spoken, శాన్తిమ్ quiet, జగామ became.

"Sita though afflicted heard from me that you were also in excessive grief on account
of separation from her and from my soothing, auspicious and welcome words, she derived comfort and remained quiet"৷৷
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే సున్దరకాణ్డే అష్టషష్టితమస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyeighth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
