[Description of the harem of Ravana.]

tasyālayavariṣṭhasya madhyē vipulamāyataṅ.

dadarśa bhavanaśrēṣṭhaṅ hanumānmārutātmajaḥ৷৷5.9.1৷৷


mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, tasya his, ālayavariṣṭhasya of the main building, madhyē in the centre, vipulam spacious, āyatam huge, bhavanaśrēṣṭham excellent among mansions, dadarśa saw.

The son of the Wind-god, Hanuman, saw a huge, spacious and excellent of all mansions in the centre of the palace.
ardhayōjanavistīrṇamāyataṅ yōjanaṅ hi tat.

bhavanaṅ rākṣasēndrasya bahuprāsādasaṅkulam৷৷5.9.2৷৷


rākṣasēndrasya of Indra among demons, tat that, bahuprāsādasaṅkulam of multitude of palaces, bhavanam mansion, ardhayōjanavistīrṇam width of half yojana, yōjanam yojana, āyatam long.

The mansion of the lord of demons was a conglomeration of palaces half a yojana long and half a yojana wide.
mārgamāṇastu vaidēhīṅ sītāmāyatalōcanām.

sarvataḥ paricakrāma hanūmānarisūdanaḥ৷৷5.9.3৷৷


arisūdanaḥ subduer of enemies, hanumān Hanuman, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, āyatalōcanām broad-eyed, sītām for Sita, mārgamāṇaḥ tu in search, sarvataḥ all over, paricakrāma went allround .

Hanuman, the subduer of enemies, went around in search of the large-eyed Vaidehi.
uttamaṅ rākṣasāvāsaṅ hanumānavalōkayan.

āsasādātha lakṣmīvān rākṣasēndranivēśanam৷৷5.9.4৷৷

caturviṣāṇairdviradaistriviṣāṇaistathaiva ca.

parikṣiptamasambādhaṅ rakṣyamāṇamudāyudhaiḥ৷৷5.9.5৷৷


atha now, lakṣmīvān endowed with brightness, hanumān Hanuman, uttamam best, rākṣasāvāsam residence of demons, caturviṣāṇaiḥ four-tusked, tathaiva ca and similarly, triviṣāṇaiḥ three-tusked, dviradaiḥ two-tusked, parikṣiptam surrounded by, asambādham spacious, udāyudhaiḥ holding weapons, rakṣyamāṇam guarded by, rākṣasēndranivēśanam home of the lord of the ogres, avalōkayan seeing, āsasāda reached.

Searching the excellent residences of important demons, Hanuman finally reached the palace of the lord of ogres guarded by armed demons with elephants with two or three or four tusks.
rākṣasībhiśca patnībhī rāvaṇasya nivēśanam.

āhṛtābhiśca vikramya rājakanyābhirāvṛtam৷৷5.9.6৷৷

tannakramakarākīrṇaṅ timiṅgilajhaṣākulam.

vāyuvēgasamādhūtaṅ pannagairiva sāgaram৷৷5.9.7৷৷


rāvaṇasya Ravana's, patnībhiḥ with wives, rākṣasībhiḥ ca by demonesses also, vikramya by winning, āhṛtābhiḥ brought, rājakanyābhiḥ by princesses, āvṛtam surrounded, nivēśanam palace, tat nakramakarākīrṇam filled with crocodiles and sharks, timiṅgilajhaṣākulam with whales and fish, vāyuvēgasamādhūtam shaken by the force of the wind, pannagaiḥ with serpents, sāgaram iva like an ocean, tat he saw.

Hanuman entered the palace of Ravana crowded with she-demons who were the wives of Ravana and the princesses brought by him after winning them in wars. To Hanuman, it looked like an ocean filled with crocodiles, sharks, whales, and a variety of fishes and snakes tossed by the force of the wind.
yā hi vaiśravaṇē lakṣmīryā cēndrē harivāhanē.

sā rāvaṇagṛhē sarvā nityamēvānapāyinī৷৷5.9.8৷৷


vaiśravaṇē by Vaisravana, yā whatever, lakṣmīḥ wealth harivāhanē on greenish horse, the mount, indrē ca of Indra, yā as much, sā that, sarvā everything, rāvaṇagṛhē in the residence of Ravana, nityamēva always, anapāyinī present.

Whatever wealth was possessed by Vaisravana (Kubera, the son of sage Vishrava) and also Indra who rides the Ucchaisrava green horse, was there in the palace of Ravana.
yā ca rājñaḥ kubērasya yamasya varuṇasya ca.

tādṛśī tadviśiṣṭā vā ṛddhī rakṣōgṛhēṣviha৷৷5.9.9৷৷


rājñaḥ of the king, kubērasya Kubera's, yā whatever, yamasya Yama's, varuṇasya Varuna's, ca and, yā whatever, tādṛśī such, tadviśiṣṭā vā or more exquisite than, ṛddhi: wealth iha here, rakṣōgṛhēṣu in the houses of demons.

The wealth stored in Ravana's palace was akin to what lay in the palaces of Kubera, Yama or Varuna, and ever more exquisite.
tasya harmyasya madhyasthaṅ vēśma cānyatsunirmitaṅ.

bahuniryūhasaṅkīrṇaṅ dadarśa pavanātmajaḥ৷৷5.9.10৷৷


pavanātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, tasya of that, harmyasya of the palace, madhyastham in the centre, sunirmitam well built, bahuniryūhasaṅkīrṇam a complex many houses, anyat another, vēśma home, dadarśa saw.

Hanuman saw in the centre of that palace a complex of many well-built houses.
brahmaṇō.rthē kṛtaṅ divyaṅ divi yadviśvakarmaṇā.

vimānaṅ puṣpakaṅ nāma sarvaratnavibhūṣitam৷৷5.9.11৷৷

parēṇa tapasā lēbhē yatkubēraḥ pitāmahāt.

kubēramōjasā jitvā lēbhē tadrākṣasēśvaraḥ৷৷5.9.12৷৷


sarvaratnavibhūṣitam decorated with all kinds of gems, puṣpakaṅ nāma called Pushpaka, yat that, divyam wonderful, vimānam aerial chariot, viśvakarmaṇā by Visvakarma, divi in the sky, brahmaṇaḥ arthē for Brahma, kṛtam built, yat the same one, kubēraḥ Kubera, pitāmahāt from grandfather the creator, parēṇa with supreme, tapasā by penance, lēbhē got, tat that, rākṣasēśvaraḥ lord of demons, ōjasā by his might, kubēram Kubera, jitvā after defeating, lēbhē acquired.

There was a wonderful aerial chariot called Pushpaka embellished with all kinds of gems built by Visvakarma for Brahma. It was the same one that Kubera had won from his grandfather, the creator Brahma, through his supreme penance. The lord of ogres acquired it (as a memento for his victory) by defeating Kubera with his might.
īhāmṛgasamāyukttai: kārtasvarahiramaṇmayaiḥ.

sukṛtairācitaṅ stambhaiḥ pradīptamiva ca śriyā৷৷5.9.13৷৷

mērumandarasaṅkāśairullikhadbhirivāmbaraṅ.

kūṭāgāraiśśubhākāraissarvatassamalaṅkṛtam৷৷5.9.14৷৷


īhāmṛgasamāyuktai: with images of wolves carved, kārtasvarahiraṇmayaiḥ made of Kartaswara and Hiranmaya, two types of gold, sukṛtaiḥ finely built, stambhaiḥ with pillars, ācitam supported, śriyā lustrous, pradīptamiva as though blazing, mērumandarasaṅkāśaiḥ resembling mountain Meru and Mandara, ambaram sky, ullikhadbhiriva as though scraping, śubhākāraiḥ by auspicious, kūṭāgāraiḥ with multitude of pleasure-houses, sarvataḥ everywhere, samalaṅkṛtam decorated.

It was supported by finely built pillars of two types of gold (Kartaswara and Hiranmaya) with images of wolves carved on them and blazing. It was tall as if scraping the sky and resembled mountains like Meru and Mandara. It was graced with multitudes of auspicious and decorated pleasure-houses everywhere.
jvalanārkapratīkāśaṅ sukṛtaṅ viśvakarmaṇā.

hēmasōpānasaṅyuktaṅ cārupravaravēdikam৷৷5.9.15৷৷


viśvakarmaṇā by Visvakarma, sukṛtam well built, jvalanārkapratīkāśam glowing like fire and the Sun, hēmasōpānasaṅyuktam had stairways of gold, cārupravaravēdikam had beautiful paltforms.

It was well built by Visvakarma and and had golden stairways, with radiant platforms glowing like fire and Sun.
jālavātāyanairyuktaṅ kāñcanaiḥ ssphāṭikairapi.

indranīlamahānīlamaṇipravaravēdikam৷৷5.9.16৷৷


kāñcanaiḥ with gold, sphāṭikairapi with crystal also, jālavātāyanaiḥ by latticed windows, yuktam endowed, indranīlamahānīlamaṇipravaravēdikam platforms encrusted with saphires called Indraneela and Mahaneela.

It had latticed windows made of gold inlaid with crystals. The platforms were encrusted with saphires called Indraneela and Mahaneela appropriately.
vidrumēṇa vicitrēṇa maṇibhiśca mahāghanaiḥ.

nistulābhiśca muktābhistalēnābhivirājitam৷৷5.9.17৷৷


vicitrēṇa with colourful, vidrumēṇa with corals, mahāghanaiḥ by very precious, maṇibhiśca by gems even, nistulābhiḥ with peerless (invaluable), muktābhiḥ with pearls, talēna on the surface, abhivirājitam shining very brightly.

It was shining bright with colourful corals, precious gems and peerless pearls fixed on its floor.
candanēna ca raktēna tapanīyanibhēna ca.

supuṇyagandhinā yuktamādityataruṇōpamam৷৷5.9.18৷৷


raktēna in red, tapanīyanibhēna ca comparable to pure and polished gold, supuṇyagandhinā with sweet fragrance, candanēna with sandal, yuktam endowed, ādityataruṇōpamam like the rising Sun.

It was bright like molten gold, fragrant with red sandal comparable to the rising Sun.
kūṭāgārairvarākārairvividhaissamalaṅkṛtam.

vimānaṅ puṣpakaṅ divyamārurōha mahākapiḥ৷৷5.9.19৷৷


mahākapiḥ Hanuman, varākāraiḥ of excellent appearance, kūṭāgāraiḥ with many corridors, samalaṅkṛtam decorated, divyam wonderful, puṣpakaṅ vimānam Pushpaka chariot, ārurōha ascended.

Hanuman ascended the wonderful Pushpaka, well-decked with many corridors.
tatrasthassa tadā gandhaṅ pānabhakṣyānnasambhavam.

divyaṅ sammūrchitaṅ jighradrūpavantamivānilam৷৷5.9.20৷৷


sa: he, tadā then, tatrasthaḥ present there, pānabhakṣyānnasambhavam rising from drinks and food, divyam divine, sammūrchitam stupefying, rūpavantam having a solid form, ānilamiva like wind, gandham fragrance, jighrat smelt.

There he smelt the stupefying, unearthly odour of food and drink. He felt as though the fragrance had taken a potentially solid form.
(Note:- The wind has no form. But when he carried the aroma of food and drink it appeared like the personification of wind which could be smelt. gandhavatī pṛthavī fragrance comes from earth pṛthavītattva the poet transmits the same to the wind who has got only sparśa sense of touch).
sa gandhastaṅ mahāsattvaṅ bandhurbandhumivōttamam.

ita ēhītyuvācēna tatra yatra sa rāvaṇaḥ৷৷5.9.21৷৷


sa: gandhaḥ that fragrance, mahāsattvam mighty, tam him (Hanuman), uttamam great, bandhum relative, bandhuriva like a relative, saḥ rāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, yatra wherever, tatra there, itaḥ ēhi come here, iti thus, uvāca iva as if told.

The fragrance was as if inviting the mighty hero like a relative inviting his kith and kin, saying 'come here' and leading him to a place where Ravana rested.
tatastāṅ prasthitaśśālāṅ dadarśa mahatīṅ śubhām.

rāvaṇasya manaḥ kāntāṅ kāntāmiva varastriyam৷৷5.9.22৷৷


tataḥ then, prasthitaḥ he started, kāntām beloved, varastriyamiva like his chief queen, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, manaḥ kāntām dear his to heart, śubhām auspicious, mahatīm great, śālām hall, dadarśa saw.

Then he proceeded to an auspicious hall, which was Ravana's favourite like his chief queen dear to his heart.
maṇisōpānavikṛtāṅ hēmajālavibhūṣitām.

sphāṭikairāvṛtatalāṅ dantāntaritarūpikām৷৷5.9.23৷৷


maṇisōpānāvikṛtām staircase inlaid with special gems, hēmajālavibhūṣitām latticed with gold, sphāṭikaiḥ with crystals, āvṛtatalām floors covered with, dantāntaritarūpikām inlaid with silver set in ivory frame.

The stairways of the mansion were inlaid with special gems, windows were latticed with gold, floors were covered with crystals, figures of ivory with silver.
muktābhiśca pravālaiśca rūpyacāmīkarairapi.

vibhūṣitāṅ maṇistambhaissubahustambhabhūṣitām৷৷5.9.24৷৷


muktābhiśca with pearls, pravālaiśca with corals also, rūpyacāmīkarairapi with silver and gold, maṇistambhaiḥ with pillars inlaid with gems, vibhūṣitām ornamented, subahustambhabhūṣitām with pillars.

It was decorated with pillars of silver and gold inlaid with pearls and corals and gems.
namrairṛjubhiratyuccaissamantātsuvibhūṣitaiḥ.

stambhai: pakṣairivātyuccairdivaṅ saṅprasthitāmiva৷৷5.9.25৷৷


namraiḥ bent, ṛjubhiḥ straight ones, atyuccai: with very lofty, samantāt all over, suvibhūṣitaiḥ well decorated, stambhaiḥ with columns, atyucchaiḥ long, pakṣaiḥ with wings, divam heaven, samprasthitāmiva as if started to reach

It had highly ornamented pillars all over, some slightly bent and others straight. With lofty columns looking like wings it appeared as if the mansion had started on its journey to heaven.
mahatyā kuthayāstīrṇāṅ pṛthivīlakṣaṇāṅkayā.

pṛthivīmiva vistīrṇāṅ sarāṣṭragṛhamālinīm৷৷5.9.26৷৷


pṛthivīlakṣaṇāṅkayā with several murals of earth, mahatyā with expansive, kuthayā with a carpet, āstīrṇām covered, sarāṣṭragṛhamālinīm having the garland of places and houses drawn on it, vistīrṇām expansive, pṛthivīmiva like the earth itself.

The floor was covered with a wide carpet spread from wall to wall with designs of different murals of many places and houses drawn in a row (garland like). The big carpet appeared like the expanse of earth itself.
nāditāṅ mattavihagairdivyagandhādhivāsitām.

parārdhyāstaraṇōpētāṅ rakṣōdhipaniṣēvitām৷৷5.9.27৷৷


mattavihagaiḥ with birds in heat, nāditām resounding, divyagandhādhivāsitām scented with divine fragrance, parārdhyāstaraṇōpētām laid with valuable tapestries, rakṣōdhipaniṣēvitām inhabitted by the
king of demons.

The mansion was resounding with the noise of birds singing in heat. It had wonderful fragrance. It was laid with exquisite tapestries and served as a dwelling place for the king of demons.
dhūmrāmagarudhūpēna vimalāṅ haṅsapāṇḍurām.

citrāṅ puṣpōpahārēṇa kalmāṣīmiva suprabhām৷৷5.9.28৷৷


agarudhūpēna with smoke of agaru, dhūmrām smoky, vimalām pure white, haṅsapāṇḍurām white like swan, puṣpōpahārēṇa due to offering of flowers, citrām colourful, suprabhām shining, kalmāṣīmiva like the wish-fulfilling cow.

It was smoky with fumes of agaru incence though spotless like a swan. It was colourful and radiant like Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow, because of the offering of flowers.
manassaṅhlādajananīṅ varṇasyāpi prasādinīm.

tāṅ śōkanāśinīṅ divyāṅ śriyaḥ sañjananīmiva৷৷5.9.29৷৷


manaḥ saṅhlādajananīm one which was soul ravishing, varṇasyāpi with colour and complexion, prasādinīm pleasing, śōkanāśinīm banished sorrow, śriyaḥ of prosperity, sañjananīmiva like the source, divyām wonderful, tām it was.

(The mansion) was so full of effulgence and soul ravishing that it served as an adornment even to splendour. It looked as though it banished all sorrow and was a source of prosperity.
indriyāṇīndriyārthaistu pañca pañcabhiruttamaiḥ.

tarpayāmāsa mātēva tadā rāvaṇapālitā৷৷5.9.30৷৷


rāvaṇapālitā chamber of Ravana, tadā then, mātā iva like a mother, uttamaiḥ with excellent,
pañcabhiḥ with the five, indriyārthaiḥ with objects of the senses, pañca five, indriyāṇi sense organs, tarpayāmāsa satisfied.

The chamber of Ravana, like a mother, gratified all the five senses of Hanuman with proper objects of the senses.
svargō.yaṅ dēvalōkō.yamindrasyēyaṅ purī bhavēt.

siddhirvēyaṅ parā hi syādityamanyata mārutiḥ৷৷5.9.31৷৷


ayam this, svargaḥ heaven, ayam this, dēvalōkaḥ world of gods, iyam thus, indrasya Indra's, purī city (of Amaravati), bhavēt may be, iyam this one, parā supreme, siddhi: achievement, syāt may be, iti thus, mārutiḥ Maruti, amanyata thought.

'This may be heaven or world of gods. It may be Amaravati, the abode of Indra or else it may be the supreme achievment (of the Creator), thought Maruti৷৷
pradhyāyata ivāpaśyatpradīpāṅstatra kāñcanān.

dhūrtāniva mahādhūtairdēvanēna parājitān৷৷5.9.32৷৷


mahādhūrtai: with expert gamblers, dēvanēna by a game of dice, parājitām defeated, dhūrtāniva like the gamblers, pradhyāyata iva like one who is deep in thought, kāñcanān golden, pradīpān lamps, āpaśyat he saw.

Seeing the golden lamps that stood burning steadily, Hanuman thought they looked like gamblers in deep thought defeated by expert gamblers in a game of dice.
dīpānāṅ ca prakāśēna tējasā rāvaṇasya ca.

arcirbhirbhūṣaṇānāṅ ca pradīptētyabhyamanyata৷৷5.9.33৷৷


dīpānām of the lamps, prakāśēna by the glow, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, tējasā ca and by his brightness, bhūṣaṇānām of ornaments, arcirbhiḥ ca by the glow spread there, pradīptā iti as if glowing like fire, amanyata he thought in his mind.

Hanuman fancied that the entire place was set ablaze with the glow of lamps, the lustre of Ravana and the brilliant glow of Ravana's ornaments (everything was shining).
tatō.paśyatkuthā৷৷sīnaṅ nānāvarāyambarasrajam.

sahasraṅ varanārīṇāṅ nānāvēṣavibhūṣitam৷৷5.9.34৷৷


tataḥ then, kuthāsīnam seated on carpets, nānāvarṇāmbarasrajam wearing clothes and garlands of different colours, nānāvēṣavibhūṣitam dressed various clothes, varanārīṇām of beautiful women, sahasram thousand, apaśyat he saw.

He found thousands of beautiful women seated on carpets wearing different clothes and garlands and dressed in various attires.
parivṛttē.rdharātrē tu pānanidrāvaśaṅ gatam.

krīḍitvōparataṅ rātrau suṣvāpa balavattadā৷৷5.9.35৷৷


rātrau at night, krīḍitvā having sported, uparatam wearied, pānanidrāvaśaṅ gatam succumbed to drinks and sleep, tadā then, ardharātrē when midnight, parivṛttē rolled away, balavat compelled, suṣvāpa to sleep.

Drinking and sporting until midnight, they had dropped off to sleep-tired.
tatprasuptaṅ virurucē niśśabdāntarabhūṣaṇam.

niḥśabdahaṅsabhramaraṅ yathā padmavanaṅ mahat৷৷5.9.36৷৷


ni:śabdāntarabhūṣaṇam the sounds of ornaments stilled, prasuptam slept, tat that, niḥśabdahaṅsabhramaram like silent swans and bees, mahat great, padmavanaṅ yathā resembling a forest of lotuses, virurucē looked beautiful.

Fast asleep, sounds of their ornaments silenced, the young women looked like a large
bed of lotuses with swans and bees sitting calm without their usual noise.
tāsāṅ saṅvṛtadantāni mīlitākṣīṇi mārutiḥ.

apaśyatpadmagandhīni vadanāni suyōṣitām৷৷5.9.37৷৷


mārutiḥ son of the Wind-god, tāsāṅ suyōṣitām of those well-bred young women, saṅvṛtadantāni with teeth concealed, mīlitākṣīṇi closed eyes, padmagandhīni giving out smell of lotuses, vadanāni faces, apaśyat looked.

Hanuman looked at the faces of the well-bred young women with closed eyes and concealed teeth, fragrant like lotuses.
prabuddhānīva padmāni tāsāṅ bhūtvā kṣapākṣayē.

punassaṅvṛtapatrāṇi rātrāviva babhustadā৷৷5.9.38৷৷


tāsām of those women, kṣapākṣayē at the end of night, prabuddhāni from early morning, padmānīva like lotuses, bhūtvā having been, punaḥ again, rātrau at night, saṅvṛtapatrāṇiva closing up their petals, tadā then, babhuḥ looked.

The faces of the women looked like blooming lotuses at day-break, their petals closed up again at night.
imāni mukhapadmāni niyataṅ mattaṣaṭpadāḥ.

ambujānīva phullāni prārthayanti punaḥ punaḥ৷৷5.9.39৷৷


mattaṣaṭpadāḥ intoxicated bees, imāni these, mukhapadmāni lotus-like faces, phullāni bloomed, ambujānīva like lotuses, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, niyatam always, prārthayanti desire.

The intoxicated bees would again and again long to enjoy these beautiful faces which were like blooming lotuses.
iti cāmanyata śrīmānupapattyā mahākapiḥ.

mēnē hi guṇatastāni samāni salilōdbhavaiḥ৷৷5.9.40৷৷


śrīmān the illustrious, mahākapiḥ great monkey, upapattyā ascertained to be true, iti thus, amanyata felt, tāni those, guṇataḥ by their qualities, salilōdbhavaiḥ with water-born lotuses, samāni similar mēnē hi he thought.

The illustrious Hanuman felt it to be correct to compare those faces with lotuses for their fragrance.
sā tasya śuśubhē śālā tābhistrībhirvirājitā.

śāradīva prasannā dyaustārābhirabhiśōbhitā৷৷5.9.41৷৷


tasya his (Ravana's), sā śālā that mansion, tābhiḥ strībhiḥ by the women, virājitā shone, tārābhiḥ with stars, abhiśōbhitā very endearing, prasannā pleasant, śāradī autumnal, dyauḥ iva sky like, śuśubhē seemed.

Brightened by (the beauty of) the maidens, the mansion shone like the autumnal sky endearing and pleasing with stars.
sa ca tābhiḥ parivṛtaśśuśubhē rākṣasādhipaḥ.

yathā hyuḍupatiśśīmāṅstārābhirabhisaṅvṛtaḥ৷৷5.9.42৷৷


tābhiḥ with them, parivṛtaḥ surrounded, saḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ the lord of demons, tārābhiḥ with stars, abhisaṅvṛtaḥ encircled, śrīmān beautiful, uḍupatiḥ yathā like the Moon, śuśubhē shone.

The lord of demons surrounded by women shone like the beautiful Moon encircled by stars.
yāścyavantē.mbarāttārāḥ puṇyaśēṣasamāvṛtāḥ.

imāstāssaṅgatāḥ kṛtsnā iti mēnē haristadā৷৷5.9.43৷৷


yāḥ those, tārāḥ stars, puṇyaśēṣasamāvṛtāḥ with left over merits, ambarāt from the sky, cyavantē fallen, tāḥ those, kṛtsnāḥ entirely, imāḥ these women, saṅgatāḥ collected together, iti thus, tadā then, hariḥ the monkey, mēnē thought.

Seeing those women lying together Hanuman imagined them to be numerous meteors dropped from heaven after enjoying their merits, enjoyed and exhausted.
tārāṇāmiva suvyaktaṅ mahatīnāṅ śubhārciṣām.

prabhāvarṇaprasādāśca virējustatra yōṣitām৷৷5.9.44৷৷


tatra there, yōṣitām of the young women, prabhāvarṇaprasādāśca lustre and grace, śubhārciṣām releasing auspicious glow, mahatīnām of the great, tārāṇāmiva like the stars, suvyaktam clearly, virējuḥ looked brilliant.

It was clear that the grace and lustre of those women looked brilliant like the lustre and grace of brilliant stars releasing an auspicious glow.
vyāvṛttagurupīnasrakprakīrṇavarabhūṣaṇāḥ.

pānavyāyāmakālēṣu nidrāpahṛtacētasaḥ৷৷5.9.45৷৷


pānavyāyāmakālēṣu drinking and sexual exercise, vyāvṛttagurupīnasrakprakīrṇavarabhūṣaṇāḥ jewels scattered and garlands displaced, nidrāpahṛtacētasaḥ minds dazed in slumber.

Garlands displaced and jewels scattered, they were drowsy due to drink and sexual exercise.
vyāvṛttatilakāḥ kāścitkāścidudbhrantanūpurāḥ.

pārśvē galitahārāśca kāścitparamayōṣitaḥ৷৷5.9.46৷৷


kaścit a few, paramayōṣitaḥ other women, vyāvṛttatilakāḥ had vermilion mark (on the forehead) smudged, kāścit and a few, udbhrāntanūpurāḥ anklets let loose, kāścit a few, pārśvē on one
side, galitahārāśca neckalces dislodged.

A few young women had their circular vermilion mark (on the forehead) smudged, some had their anklets loosened and a few had their necklaces.
muktāhārā.vṛtāścānyāḥ kāścidvisrastavāsasaḥ.

vyāviddharaśanādāmāḥ kiśōrya iva vāhitāḥ৷৷5.9.47৷৷


anyāḥ others, muktāhārāvṛtāḥ had broken pearl strings on girdle, kāścit some, visrastavāsasaḥ had their clothes slipped off, vyāvaddhiraśanādāmāḥ waist belts snapped, vāhitāḥ fallen to rest, kiśōryaḥ iva like young mares.

Some had their strings of pearl broken, others had their clothes slipped off, and some had their waist belts snapped. They were like young mares fallen to rest after carrying heavy loads.
sukuṇḍaladharāścānyā vicchinnamṛditasrajaḥ.

gajēndramṛditāḥ phullā latā iva mahāvanē৷৷5.9.48৷৷


sukuṇḍaladharāḥ good ear-tops, anyāḥ others, vicchinnamṛditasrajaḥ with broken and crushed flower garlands, mahāvanē in the dense forest, gajēndramṛditāḥ crushed by mighty elephants, phullāḥ blooming, latāḥ iva like creepers.

With their good ear-tops broken and flower garlands crushed some looked like blooming creepers in a dense forest crushed by mighty elephants.
candrāṅśukiraṇābhāśca hārāḥ kāsāṅcidutkaṭāḥ.

haṅsā iva babhussuptāḥ stanamadhyēṣu yōṣitām৷৷5.9.49৷৷


kāsāṅcit some, yōṣitām of young women, stanamadhyēṣu between their breasts, utkaṭāḥ large, candrāṅśukiraṇābhāśca resembling the rays of the Moon, hārāḥ chains, suptāḥ sleeping, haṅsāḥ iva like the swans, babhuḥ appeared.

The pearl chains, large and shining like rays of the Moon in the space between the breasts looked like sleeping swans.
aparāsāṅ ca vaiḍūryāḥ kādambā iva pakṣiṇaḥ.

hēmasūtrāṇi cānyāsāṅ cakravākā ivābhavan৷৷5.9.50৷৷


parāsāṅ ca and for some, vaiḍūryāḥ vaidurya, kādambāḥ kadamba, pakṣiṇaḥ iva like birds, anyāsām of others, hēmasūtrāṇi golden chains ,cakravākāḥ iva like ruddy geese, abhavan seemed.

The vaidurya worn by women (on the breasts) looked like Kadamba birds while the golden chains put on by some others appeared like ruddy geese.
haṅsakāraṇḍavākīrṇāścakravākōpaśōbhitāḥ.

āpagā iva tā rējurjaghanaiḥ pulinairiva৷৷5.9.51৷৷


pulinairiva like river banks, jaghanaiḥ with hips, tāḥ those women, haṅsakāraṇḍavākīrṇāḥ crowded with swans and Karandava birds, cakravākōpaśōbhitāḥ abounded with ruddy geese, āpagā iva like rivers, rējuḥ were shining.

Their hips were like river banks crowded with swans, karandava and Chakravaka birds shining like rivers.
kiṅkiṇījālasaṅkōśāstā haimavipulāmbujāḥ.

bhāvagrāhā yaśastīrāḥ suptā nadya ivā৷৷babhuḥ৷৷5.9.52৷৷


kiṅkiṇījālasaṅkōśāḥ tiny bells tied round the waist looking like buds, haimavipulāmbujāḥ bold golden ornaments looking like lotuses, bhāvagrāhāḥ their amorous gestures of love play like crocodiles, yaśastīrāḥ radiant beauty of silver banks, suptāḥ sleeping, nadyaḥ iva resembled rivers, ābabhuḥ appeared.

With their tiny bells round their girdle looking like buds, the bold golden ornaments
like lotuses, their gestures of love like crocodiles and their radiant beauty like silver banks, the women looked like smoky rivers.
mṛduṣvaṅgēṣu kāsāñcitkucāgrēṣu ca saṅsthitāḥ.

babhurvarbhūṣaṇānīva śubhā bhūṣaṇarājayaḥ৷৷5.9.53৷৷


kāsāṅcit for some women, mṛduṣu on their tender, aṅgēṣu limbs, kucāgrēṣu ca and on the nipples of breasts, saṅsthitāḥ set, śubhāḥ beautiful, bhūṣaṇarājayaḥ collections of ornaments, bhūṣaṇānīva like ornaments, babhūvuḥ appeared.

The beautiful imprints made by the (heavy) ornaments on the tender limbs, breasts and nipples of some women appeared like many ornaments.
aṅśukāntāśca kāsāñcinmukhamārutakampitāḥ.

uparyupari vaktrāṇāṅ vyādhūyantē punaḥ punaḥ৷৷5.9.54৷৷


kāsāñcit for some, mukhamārutakampitāḥ shaken by the breath released by their mouth, aṅśukāntāśca the fringes of garments, vaktrāṇām on their faces, uparyupari drawn, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, vyādhūyantē fluttered.

Shaken by the breath released from their mouths the fringes of the garments of some women were drawn towards their faces again and again-fluttering.
tāḥ patākā ivōddhūtāḥ patnīnāṅ ruciraprabhāḥ.

nānāvarṇasuvarṇānāṅ vaktramūlēṣu rējirē৷৷5.9.55৷৷


nānāvarṇasuvarṇānām of the women of different beautiful hues, patnīnām of the wives, vaktramūlēṣu on the edges of their faces, tāḥ those, ruciraprabhāḥ with beautiful glow, udhdūtāḥ raised, patākāḥ iva like flags, rējirē shone.

The fringes of their garments glowing beautifully close to the faces of the wives (of Ravana) with different beautiful hues, shone splendid like flags.
vavalguścātra kāsāṅcitkuṇḍalāni śubhārciṣām.

mukhamārutasaṅsargānmandaṅ mandaṅ suyōṣitām৷৷5.9.56৷৷


śubhārciṣām with auspicious radiance, kāsāñcit for some, yōṣitām women, kuṇḍalāni ear-tops, atra here,mukhamārutasaṅsargāt by the touch of their breath, mandaṅ mandam softly and gently, vavalguśca mild sound of vibration.

The ear-tops of some women endowed with auspicious charm were swinging softly generating a gentle sound by the touch of their breath.
śarkarā.savagandhaiśca prakṛtyā surabhiḥ sukhaḥ.

tāsāṅ vadananiśvāsassiṣēvē rāvaṇaṅ tadā৷৷5.9.57৷৷


tadā then, prakṛtyā natural, śarkarāsavagandhaiśca the sweet smell of wine (made from sugarcane juice), surabhiḥ fragrant, sukhaḥ happy, tāsām their, vadananiśvāsaḥ breath from their mouth, rāvaṇam Ravana, siṣēvē served.

The sweet smell of wine emitted from their mouth and the natural fragrance of their breath was refreshing to Ravana as if it was serving him at that time.
rāvaṇānanaśaṅkāśca kāścidrāvaṇayōṣitaḥ.

mukhāni sma sapatnīnāmupājighranpunaḥ punaḥ৷৷5.9.58৷৷


kāścit some, rāvaṇayōṣitaḥ Ravana's wives, rāvaṇānanaśaṅkāśca assuming it to be Ravana's face, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, sapatnīnām of their co-wives, mukhāni mouths, upājighran smelt.

Some women of Ravana (overcome by blind passion) smelt again and again the mouths of their co-wives next to them assuming it to be Ravana's.
atyarthaṅ saktamanasō rāvaṇē tā varastriyaḥ.

asvatantrāḥ sapatnīnāṅ priyamēvā.caraṅstadā৷৷5.9.59৷৷


rāvaṇē at Ravana, atyartham therefore, saktamanasaḥ devoted to (Ravana), varastriyaḥ beautiful women, asvatantrāḥ having no freedom, tadā then, sapatnīnām of their co-wives, priyamēva pleasing , ācaran did.

Even though the beautiful wives (should have been angry with their co-wives for smelling their mouths) they behaved pleasingly, having no freedom to act with Ravana
bāhūnupanidhāyānyāḥ pārihāryavibhūṣitān.

aṅśukāni ca ramyāṇi pramadāstatra śiśyirē৷৷5.9.60৷৷


anyāḥ others, pramadāḥ women, pārihāryavibhūṣitān laying aside their adornments, bāhūn arms, ramyāṇi beautiful, aṅśukāni garment, upanidhāya placing, tatra there, śiśyirē slept.

Some women slept pillowed on their arms, laying aside their adornments and others had their garment under the head as pillows and lay in sleep.
anyā vakṣasi cānyasyāstasyāḥ kācitpunarbhujam.

aparā tvaṅkamanyasyāstasyāścāpyaparā bhujau৷৷5.9.61৷৷


anyāḥ some women, anyasyāḥ on the other women's, vakṣasi on the chest, kācit punaḥ another again, tasyāḥ her, bhujam arms aparā tu another, anyasyāḥ on the others, aṅkam lap, aparā another, tasyāḥ her, bhujau on the arms.

Some women lay placing their arms on the breasts of the other while their own arms were used as pillow by another. One woman placed her head on the lap of the other and slept.
ūrupārśvakaṭīpṛṣṭhamanyōnyasya samāśritāḥ.

parasparaniviṣṭāṅgyō madasnēhavaśānugāḥ৷৷5.9.62৷৷


madasnēhavaśānugāḥ given to intoxication and love, anyōnyasya with one another, ūrupārśvakaṭīpṛṣṭham on thighs, side, hips and back on the lap of the other, samāśritāḥ had slept, parasparaniviṣṭāṅgyaḥ lay intertwined, one on the other.

Given to intoxication and sex, the women slept touching one another's thighs, sides, hips, back and lap of the other, with their limbs intertwined.
anyōnyabhujasūtrēṇa strīmālā grathitā hi sā.

mālēva grathitā sūtrē śuśubhē mattaṣaṭpadā৷৷5.9.63৷৷


anyōnyabhujasūtrēṇa shoulders of one another, grathitā knit, sā that, strīmālā chain of women, sūtrē in a thread, grathitā intertwined, mattaṣaṭpadā with drunken bees resting on it, mālēva like garland of flowers, śuśubhē shone.

Knit with the shoulders of one another like a garland of flowers intertwined with the tipsy bees resting the women shone.
latānāṅ mādhavē māsi phullānāṅ vāyusēvanāt.

anyōnya mālāgrathitaṅ saṅsaktakusumōccayam৷৷5.9.64৷৷

vyativēṣṭitasuskandhamanyōnyabhramarākulam.

āsīdvanamivōddhūtaṅ strīvanaṅ rāvaṇasya tat৷৷5.9.65৷৷


anyōnyamālāgrathitam linked to each other like a chain, saṅsaktakusumōcchayam flowers in a string, vyativēṣṭitasuskandham tangled together with strong joints, anyōnyabhramarākulam with bees swarming, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, tat that, strīvanam a garden of women, mādhavē māsi in the month of spring, vāyusaṅsēvanāt by the blowing of the wind, phullānām of the blooms, latānām of the creepers, anyōnyamālāgrathitam one to one linked like a garland, anyōnyabhramarākulam like the swarm of bees, uddhūtam shaken, vanamiva like thickets, āsīt appeared.

The women of Ravana appeared like a garden in spring. They were as if a cluster of
creepers blossomed in spring due to the caresses of the breeze. They were knit together as one string forming a garland, flowers of one creeper striking the other. The joints of these creepers had grown strong when tangled together. Shaken by the breeze, the bees resting on one creeper would go to the other.
ucitēṣvapi suvyaktaṅ na tāsāṅ yōṣitāṅ tadā.

vivēkaḥ śakya ādhātuṅ bhūṣaṇāṅgāmbarasrajām৷৷5.9.66৷৷


tadā then, tāsāṅ yōṣitām of those women, bhūṣaṇāṅgāmbarasrajām of ornaments, garments, limbs and garlands, vivēkaḥ to distinguish, suvyaktam clearly, ādhātum to place, ucitēṣvapi in right spots, na śakyaḥ not possible.

It was not possible to distinguish clearly between their jewels, limbs, garments and garlands and to place them in the right spots.
rāvaṇē sukhasaṅviṣṭē tāstriyō vividhaprabhāḥ.

jvalantaḥ kāñcanā dīpāḥ praikṣantānimiṣā iva৷৷5.9.67৷৷


rāvaṇē when Ravana, sukhasaṅviṣṭē was sleeping happily, vidhaprabhāḥ gods of lights, tāḥ striyaḥ those women, jvalantaḥ glowing, kāñcanāḥ dīpāḥ iva golden lamp-posts, animiṣāḥ without winking, praikṣanta iva gazed at him.

When Ravana was happily asleep, the gods of light burning on the gold lamp-posts gazed without winking as it were, at the women, whom they dare not gaze for fear of waking Ravana.
rājarṣipitṛdaityānāṅ gandharvāṇāṅ ca yōṣitaḥ.

rākṣasānāṅ ca yāḥ kanyāstasya kāmavaśaṅ gatāḥ৷৷5.9.68৷৷


rājarṣipitṛdaityānām of royal sages, ancestral gods and demons, gandharvāṇām of gandharvas, yōṣitaḥ women, rākṣasānām of ogres, yāḥ kanyāḥ those girls, tasya his, kāmavaśamgatāḥ they were infatuated with him.

The women halled from the families of royal sages, ancestral deities, daityas and demons who were infatuated with him.
yuddhakāmēna tāḥ sarvā rāvaṇēna hṛtāḥ striyaḥ.

samadā madanēnaiva mōhitāḥ kāścidāgatāḥ৷৷5.9.69৷৷


sarvāḥ all, tāḥ striyaḥ those women, yuddhakāmēna on account of his love for war, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, hṛtāḥ kidnapped, samadāḥ passionate ones, kāścit a few, madanēna by lust, mōhitāḥ ēva deluded, āgatāḥ came.

Many were brought by Ravana as captives of war and some came on their own deluded by lust.
na tatra kācitpramadā prasahya vīryōpapannēna guṇēna labdhā.

na cānyakāmāpi na cānyapūrvā vinā varārhāṅ janakātmajāṅ tām৷৷5.9.70৷৷


varārhām revered, tām her, janakātmajāṅ vinā except Sita, tatra there, kācit pramadā any women, vīryōpapannēna on account of his valour, prasahya labdhā obtained forcibly, na not, guṇēna by virtues, anyakāmāpi not in love with others, na ca and not, anyapūrvā ca married by others earlier, na not.

Except Sita no other woman among them had been taken there by force. They were won only on account of his valour and virtues. None loved any one earlier and none was married to others.
na cākulīnā na ca hīnarūpā nādakṣiṇā nānupacārayuktā.

bhāryābhavattasya na hīnasattvā na cāpi kāntasya na kāmanīyā৷৷5.9.71৷৷


tasya his, bhāryā wife, akulīnā low-bred, na ca abhavat did not become, hīnarūpā ca without beauty, na not, adakṣiṇā unkind, na not, anupacārayuktā discourteous, na not, hīnasattvā without strength, na not, kāntasya for the lover, na kāmanīyā ca not loveable, na none.

None among them was born of a lowly family, nor lacked beauty, kindness, skill, strength or brightness. No one was not lovable to Ravana.
babhūva buddhistu harīśvarasya yadīdṛśī rāghavadharmapatnī.

imā yathā rākṣasarājabhāryāḥ sujātamasyēti hi sādhubuddhēḥ৷৷5.9.72৷৷


imāḥ these, rākṣasarājabhāryāḥ wives of the demon lord, yathā as, rāghavadharmapatnī Rama's lawful wife, īdṛśī such a lady, asya his, sujātam born of good family, iti thus, sādhubuddhēḥ of the wise, harīśvarasya Hanuman's, buddhistu thought also, babhūva was.

'If the lawful wife of Rama born of a good family can be allowed to remain with Rama in the same way as the consorts of the lord of demons, how fortunate it would be, thought the wise lord of monkeys'.
punaśca sō.cintayādāttarūpō dhruvaṅ viśiṣṭā guṇatō hi sītā.

athāyamasyāṅ kṛtavānmahātmā laṅkēśvaraḥ kaṣṭamanāryakarma৷৷5.9.73৷৷


saḥ he, āttarūpaḥ assuming his true form, punaśca once again, acintayat he thought, sītā Sita, dhruvam surely, guṇataḥ by her virtues, viśiṣṭā distinguished one, atha now, mahātmā great, ayaṅ laṅkēśvaraḥ that lord of Lanka, asyām in her case, anāryam an unfit act not befitting a noble one, kṛtavān did, kaṣṭam alas.

Hanuman once again assuming his true form said to himself, 'Sita is surely a virtuous lady superior to and more distinguished than them all. Alas, this lord of Lanka committed an ignoble, act (by abducting her).
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē navamassargaḥ.
Thus ends the ninth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
