[Hanuman ascends the simsupa tree in the Ashoka grove and watches.]

स मुहूर्तमिव ध्यात्वा मनसा चाधिगम्य ताम्।

अवप्लुतो महातेजाः प्राकारं तस्य वेश्मनः।।5.14.1।।


महातेजा mighty, सः that (Hanuman), मुहूर्तमिव for a short while, ध्यात्वे lost in thought, ताम् her, मनसा in the mind, अधिगम्य reached, तस्य वेश्मनः of that palace, प्राकारम् boundary, अवप्लुतः jumped.

Mighty Hanuman lost in thought for a moment, jumped down (the harem) to the boundary wall of the palace.
स तु संहृष्टसर्वाङ्गः प्राकारस्थो महाकपिः।

पुष्पिताग्रान्वसन्तादौ ददर्श विविधान् द्रुमान्।।5.14.2।।

सालानशोकान् भव्यांश्च चंपकांश्च सुपुष्पितान्।

उद्दालकान्नागवृक्षांश्चूतान्कपिमुखानपि।।5.14.3।।


प्राकारस्थः from the boundary, सः महाकपिः great vanara, संह्रष्टसर्वाङ्गः contracting his body, वसन्तादौ begining of spring, पुष्पिताग्रान् blossoms on top, विविधान् several kinds, द्रुमान् trees, ददर्श saw, सालान् Salas, भव्यान् Bhavyas, अशोकान् Ashokas, सुपुष्पितान् blossomed, चम्पकांश्च Champakas, उद्दालकान् Uddalakas, नागवृक्षान् Naga trees, चूतान् Mangoes, कपिमुखानपि as the snout of the monkeys

Standing on the boundary wall, the great vanara contracted his body and observed the blossoms on several tree tops---- Salas, lovely Ashoka trees and blossoms of champak, uddalaka, naga, mangoes with their fruits crimson as the snout of a monkey, it being the beginning of Spring.
अथाम्रवणसञ्छन्नां लताशतसमावृताम्।

ज्यामुक्त इव नाराचः पुप्लुवे वृक्षवाटिकाम्।।5.14.4।।


अथ and then, आम्रवणसञ्छन्नाम् filled with mango groves, लताशतसमाकुलाम् overgrown with hundreds of creepers, वृक्षवाटिकाम् cluster of trees, ज्यामुक्तः released from bow, नाराचः इव like arrow, पुप्लुवे penetrated.

He penetrated like an arrow released from a bow the cluster of trees covering mango grove and overgrown with hundreds of creepers.
स प्रविश्य विचित्रां तां विहगैरभिनादिताम्।

राजतैः कांचनैश्चैव पादपैः सर्वतो वृताम्।।5.14.5।।

विहगैर्मृगसङ्घैश्च विचित्रां चित्रकाननाम्।

उदितादित्यसङ्काशां ददर्श हनुमान् कपिः।।5.14.6।।

वृतां नानाविधैर्वृक्षैः पुष्पोपगफलोपगैः।

कोकिलैर्भृङ्गराजैश्च मत्तैर्नित्यनिषेविताम्।।5.14.7।।

प्रहृष्टमनुजे काले मृगपक्षिसमाकुले।

मत्तबर्हिणसङ्घुष्टां नानाद्विजगणायुताम्।।5.14.8।।


कपिः monkey, सः हनुमान् Hanuman, प्रहृष्टमनुजे काले pleasing to people, मृगपक्षिसमाकुले rendered noisy by herds of animals and flocks of birds, विचित्राम् colourful, विहगैः birds, अभिनादिताम् echoing melodiously, राजतैः with silvery, काञ्चनैश्चैव and by golden, पादपैः with trees, सर्वतः all over, वृताम् surrounded, विहगैः with birds, मृगसङ्घैश्च with herds of deer, विचित्राम् colourful, चित्रकाननाम् lovely thickets, उदितादित्यसङ्काशाम् like the Sun just risen, पुष्पोपगफलोपगैः fringed with abundant flowers and fruits, नानाविधैः of several kinds, वृक्षैः with trees, वृताम् inhabited, मत्तै: with intoxicated, कोकिलैः with cuckoos, भृङ्गराजैश्च with bees, नित्यनिषेविताम् ever delighting, मत्तबर्हिणसङ्घुष्टाम् flocks of proud peacocks, नानाद्विजगणायुताम् flocks of different birds, ताम् he, प्रविश्य entered, ददर्श saw.

Entering deep into the grove, Hanuman saw clusters of trees pleasing to look at, herds of animals and flocks of colourful birds singing melodious notes.The grove was surrounded on all sides by silvery and golden trees which looked colourful with flocks of birds and herds of deer. It was full of lovely thickets looking like the rising sun. It was fringed with various trees bearing abundance of fruits and flowers. It was inhabited by intoxicated cuckoos, bees, proud peacocks and numerous lovely birds.
मार्गमाणो वरारोहां राजपुत्रीमनिन्दिताम्।

सुखप्रसुप्तान्विहगान् बोधयामास वानरः।।5.14.9।।


वानरः vanara, वरारोहाम् born of a noble family, अनिन्दिताम् blameless, राजपुत्रीम् princess, मार्गमाणः searching, सुखप्रसुप्तान् happily sleeping, विहगान् birds, बोधयामास awakened.

The vanara who went searching for the paragon of virtue born of a noble family, awakened the birds who were happily asleep in their nests.
उत्पतद्भिर्द्विजगणैः पक्षैः सालास्समाहताः।

अनेकवर्णा विविधा मुमुचुः पुष्पवृष्टयः।।5.14.10।।


उत्पतद्भिः by the flying ones, द्विजगणैः by flocks of birds, पक्षैः with wings, समाहताः hit, सालाः sala, अनेकवर्णाः of different colours, विविधाः many, पुष्पवृष्टयः showers of flowers, मुमुचुः let loose.

As the birds flew away, the trees hit by the wings of birds showered flowers of different colours.
पुष्पावकीर्णश्शुशुभे हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः।

अशोकवनिकामध्ये यथा पुष्पमयो गिरिः।।5.14.11।।


पुष्पावकीर्णः covered with flowers, मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, हनुमान् Hanuman, अशोकवनिकामध्ये in the middle of the Ashoka grove, पुष्पमयः full of flowers, गिरिः यथा like a
mountain, शुशुभे shone.

Covered with flowers, Hanuman shone like a mountain of flowers in the midst of Ashoka grove.
दिशस्सर्वाः प्रधावन्तं वृक्षषण्डगतं कपिम्।

दृष्ट्वा सर्वाणि भूतानि वसन्त इति मेनिरे।।5.14.12।।
 

दृष्ट्वा beholding, दिशस्सर्वाः in all directions, प्रधावन्तं running, वृक्षषण्डगतं variegated flowers shed by trees, कपिम् monkey (Hanuman), सर्वाणि all, भूतानि living beings, वसन्त spring, इति मेनिरे this is spring

Beholding that sprightly monkey running in all directions, its body covered with variegated blossoms fallen from the trees, all living beings there thought that it was Spring personified
वृक्षेभ्यः पतितैः पुष्पैरवकीर्णा पृथग्विदैः।

रराज वृक्षेभ्यः तत्र प्रमदेव विभूषिता।।5.14.13।।
 

पुष्पैरवकीर्णा strewn with flowers of various colours, पृथग्विदैः goddess of earth, पतितैः fallen, वृक्षेभ्यः from the trees of various kinds, रराज charming, तत्र there, प्रमदेव like young woman, विभूषिता profusely bedecked

Strewn with flowers of various colours fallen from the trees of various kinds, the goddess of earth looked charming like a young woman profusely bedecked.
तरस्विना ते तरवस्तरसाभिप्रकम्पिताः।

कुसुमानि विचित्राणि ससृजुः कपिना तदा।।5.14.14।।
 

तदा then, तरस्विना endowed with speed, कपिना by the monkey, तरसा speedily, अभिप्रकम्पिताः vigorously shaken, ते those, तरवः trees, विचित्राणि colourful, कुसुमानि flowers, ससृजुः showered.

Shaken vigorously by Hanuman of great speed, the trees shed their blooms of variegated colours.
निर्धूतपत्रशिखराः शीर्णपुष्पफला द्रुमाः।

निक्षिप्तवस्त्राभरणा धूर्ता इव पराजिताः।।5.14.15।।


निर्धूतपत्रशिखराः with top branches shorn, शीर्णपुष्पफलाः with flowers and fruits shed, द्रुमाः trees, पराजिताः defeated, निक्षिप्तवस्त्राभरणाः with clothes and ornaments lost in gambling, धूर्ता इव like a gambler.

The tree tops, shorn of their leaves and flowers and fruits fallen, appeared like gamblers who had lost their stakes and had to lay down their clothes and ornaments.
हनूमता वेगवता कम्पितास्ते नगोत्तमाः।

पुष्पपर्णफलान्याशु मुमुचुः पुष्पशालिनः।।5.14.16।।


वेगवता by the swift, हनूमता Hanuman, कम्पिताः shaken, पुष्पशालिनः full of flowers and fruits, मुमुचुः dropped.

Shaken by the swift Hanuman, even the big trees dropped flowers, fruits and leaves.
विहङ्गसङ्घैर्हीनास्ते स्कन्धमात्राश्रया द्रुमाः।

बभूवुरगमाः सर्वे मारुतेव निर्धुताः।5.14.17।।


सर्वे all, ते द्रुमाः those trees, मारुतेन by Hanuman, विनिर्धुताः laid bare, अगमाः इव trees unable to move, विहङ्गसङ्घै: by flocks of birds, हीनाः deserted, स्कन्धमात्राश्रयाः only resting on the trunks, बभूवुः became.

Deserted by the flocks of birds resting on them (flowers and leaves also dropped from branches), the trees were left bare with trunks unable to move.
निर्धूतकेशी युवतिर्यथा मृदितवर्णका।

निष्पीतशुभदन्तोष्ठी नखैर्दन्तैश्च विक्षता।।5.14.18।।

तथा लाङ्गूलहस्तैश्च चरणाभ्यां च मर्दिता।

बभूवाशोकवनिका प्रभग्नवरपादपा।।5.14.19।।


लाङ्गूलहस्तैश्च with tail and hands, चरणाभ्यां च and with feet, मर्दिता crushed, प्रभग्नवरपादपाः prominent trees shattered, अशोकवनिका Ashoka garden, निर्धूतकेशी hair dishevelled, मृदितवर्णका circular vermilion mark effaced, निष्पीतशुभदन्तोष्ठी with bright teeth and lips kissed, नखैः with nails, दन्तैश्च with teeth also, विक्षता wounded, युवतिः young woman, यथा likewise, तथा that, बभूव appeared.

The garden of Ashoka with trees shattered and crushed by Hanuman's tail, hands and feet, appeared like a woman with dishevelled hair, with her vermilion mark effaced, her bright teeth and lips faded for being kissed and wounded with nails and bitten with teeth (by her lover).
महालतानां दामानि व्यथमत्तरसा कपिः।

यथा प्रावृषि विन्ध्यस्य मेघजालानि मारुतः।।5.14.20।।


कपिः monkey, महालतानाम् of huge creepers, दामानि hanging, तरसा with tremendous speed, मारुतः wind, प्रावृषि in the rainy season, विन्ध्यस्य of Vindhya, मेघजालानि clusters of clouds, यथा like wise, व्यथमत् shook.

Hanuman shook with tremendous speed the huge clusters of creepers hanging there just like stormy wind in rainy season scatters masses of clouds on the Vindhya mountain.
स तत्र मणिभूमीश्च राजतीश्च मनोरमाः।

तथा काञ्चनभूमीश्च ददर्श विचरन्कपिः।।5.14.21।।


सः he, कपिः the monkey, तत्र there, विचरन् while roaming, मणिभूमीश्च floors with gems, राजतीश्च studded with silver, तथा so also, मनोरमाः pleasing to the eyes, काञ्चनभूमीश्च floors paved with gold, ददर्श saw.

Roaming there the monkey noticed the beautiful floors paved with gems, gold and silver৷৷
वापीश्च विविधाकाराः पूर्णाः परमवारिणा।

महार्हैर्मणिसोपानैरुपपन्नास्ततस्ततः।।5.14.22।।

मुक्ताप्रवालसिकताः स्फाटिकान्तरकुट्टिमाः।

काञ्चनैस्तरुभिश्चित्रैस्तीरजैरुपशोभिताः।।5.14.23।।

फुल्लपद्मोत्पलवनाश्चक्रवाकोपकूजिताः।

नत्यूहरुतसंघुष्टा हंससारसनादिताः।।5.14.24।।

दीर्घाभिर्द्रुमयुक्ताभिः सरद्भिश्च समन्ततः।

अमृतोपमतोयाभिश्शिवाभिरुपसंस्कृताः।।5.14.25।।

लताशतैरवततास्सन्तानकुसुमावृताः।

नानागुल्मावृतघनाः करवीरकृतान्तराः।।5.14.26।।
 

परमवारिणा with pure water, पूर्णाः filled, ततस्ततः here and there, महार्हैः with rich, मणिसोपानैः with steps studded with gems, उपपन्नाः endowed with, मुक्ताप्रवालसिकताः with sands of corals and pearls, स्फाटिकान्तरकुट्टिमाः platforms paved with bright crystals, तीरजैः grown on banks, काञ्चनैः by golden, चित्रैः with colourful, तरुभिः with trees, उपशोभिताः looked splendid, फुल्लपद्मोत्पलवनाः with beds of lotuses in bloom, चक्रवाकोपकूजिताः with sounds of Chakravakas, नत्यूहरुतसंघुष्टाः a flocks of Natyuha birds rubbing together, हंससारसनादिताः made noisy with swans and Sarasa birds, दीर्घाभिः by long, द्रुमयुक्ताभिः endowed with trees, अमृतोपमतोयाभिः with nectarlike water, शिवाभिः with auspicious, सरिद्भिः with streamlets, समन्ततः all over, उपसंस्कृताः decorated, लताशतैः with hundreds of
creepers, अवतताः spread, सन्तानकुसुमावृताः scattered with Ashoka blossoms, नानागुल्मावृतघनाः thick with several bushes, करवीरकृतांतराः lilies in bloom here and there, विविधाकाराः of different shapes, वापीश्च wells.

He observed ponds of different shapes filled with clear water with steps paved with rich gems, with sands of pearls and corals and bottoms of crystal, which contained beds of lotuses in bloom, adorned with chakravaka birds and resonant with cacklings of swans and sarasas and vatyuhas rubbing their beaks. There were golden platforms built on banks and platforms built of crystals. There were trees on the bank of streams, and nectarlike sacred waters flowing in them surrounded by hundreds of creepers, and Ashoka blossoms scattered everywhere, with thickly grown bushes of different kinds, with lilies in bloom in tanks.
वापीश्च विविधाकाराः पूर्णाः परमवारिणा।

महार्हैर्मणिसोपानैरुपपन्नास्ततस्ततः।।5.14.22।।

मुक्ताप्रवालसिकताः स्फाटिकान्तरकुट्टिमाः।

काञ्चनैस्तरुभिश्चित्रैस्तीरजैरुपशोभितैः।।5.14.23।।

फुल्लपद्मोत्पलवनाश्चक्रवाकोपकूजिताः।

नत्यूहरुतसंघुष्टा हंससारसनादिताः।।5.14.24।।

दीर्घाभिर्द्रुमयुक्ताभिः सरद्भिश्च समन्ततः।

अमृतोपमतोयाभिश्शिवाभिरुपसंस्कृताः।।5.14.25।।

लताशतैरवततास्सन्तानकुसुमावृताः।

नानागुल्मावृतघनाः करवीरकृतान्तराः।।5.14.26।।

ततोऽम्बुधरसङ्काशं प्रवृद्धशिखरं गिरिम्।

विचित्रकूटं कूटैश्च सर्वतः परिवारितम्।।5.14.27।।

शिलागृहैरवततं नानावृक्षैः समावृतम्।

ददर्श हरिशार्दूलो रम्यं जगति पर्वतम्।।5.14.28।।


ततः then, हरिशार्दूलः a tiger among monkeys, जगति movable, रम्यं पर्वतम् delightful mountain, अम्बुधरसङ्काशम् resembling a rain cloud, प्रवृद्धशिखरम् with a tall peak, विचित्रकूटम् with a collection of wonderful peaks, सर्वतः all over, कूटै: by peaks, परिवारितम् surrounded, शिलागृहैः with caves, अवततम् extending, नानावृक्षैः with different kinds of trees, समावृतम् surrounded, गिरिम् mountain, ददर्श beheld.

The tiger among monkeys beheld a delightingful mountain, resembling the raincloud with tall, pleasing peaks, wonderful peaks spread all over the mountain. There were caves built of stone, with a variety of trees.
ददर्श च नगात्तस्मान्नदीं निपतितां कपिः।

अङ्कादिव समुत्पत्य प्रियस्य पतितां प्रियाम्।।5.14.29।।

जले निपतिताग्रैश्च पादपैरुपशोभिताम्।

वार्यमाणामिव क्रुद्धां प्रमदां प्रियबन्धुभिः।।5.14.30।।

पुनरावृत्ततोयां च ददर्श स महाकपिः।

प्रसन्नामिव कान्तस्य कान्तां पुनरुपस्थिताम्।।5.14.31।।


कपिः monkey, तस्मात् from that, नगात् hill, निपतिताम् descending down, नदीं a stream, प्रियस्य beloved's, अङ्कात् from the thighs, समुत्पत्य jumping up, पतिताम् falling down, प्रियाम् इव like a beloved, जले in water, निपतिताग्रैः with the branches bent into water, पादपैः with trees, उपशोभिताम् splendid, प्रियबन्धुभिः by dear relatives, वार्यमाणाम् prevented, क्रुद्धाम् angry one, प्रमदाम् इव like a woman, नदीम् river, ददर्श saw, आवृत्ततोयाम् with water running backwards creating circles, कान्तस्य at the lover, प्रसन्नाम् pleased, पुनः again, उपस्थिताम् approached, कान्तामिव like a woman, सः Hanuman, महाकपिः great monkey, पुनः again, ददर्श saw.

Hanuman, the great monkey saw a stream descending from the hill which looked like a beloved jumping down from the thighs of her lover. It was adorned with trees whose boughs touched the water and thus looking like an angry woman leaving her dear lover but detained by her relatives. With the water running backward in circles it appeared as if the beloved has returned to her lover pleased.
तस्या दूरात्सपद्मिन्यो नानाद्विजगणायुताः।

ददर्श हरिशार्दूलो हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः।।5.14.32।।


हरिशार्दूलः tiger among vanaras, मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, सः हनुमान् Hanuman, तस्य of that (hill), अदूरात् not far from there, नानाद्विजगणायुताः filled with different flocks of water birds, पद्मिन्यः lotus ponds, ददर्श saw.

Not far from there, Hanuman, son of the Windgod sighted lotus ponds filled with different kinds of water birds.
कृत्रिमां दीर्घिकां चापि पूर्णां शीतेन वारिणा।

मणिप्रवरसोपानां मुक्तासिकतशोभिताम्।।5.14.33।।

विविधैर्मृगसङ्घैश्च विचित्रां चित्रकाननाम्।

प्रासादैस्सुमहद्भिश्च निर्मितैर्विश्वकर्मणा।।5.14.34।।

काननैः कृत्रिमैश्चापि सर्वतः समलङ्कृताम्।


शीतेन by cool, वारिणा with water, पूर्णाम् filled with, मणिप्रवरसोपानाम् with steps embellished with gems, मुक्तासिकतशोभिताम् spread over with pearl dust as sand, विविधैः with many kinds, मृगसङ्घैश्च with herds of animals, विचित्राम् wonderful, चित्रकाननाम् having colourful woods, विश्वकर्मणा by Visvakarma, निर्मितैः constructed, सुमहद्भिः by the large, प्रासादैः mansions, कृत्रिमैः artificial, काननैश्चापि woodlands also, सर्वतः all over, समलङ्कृताम् decorated, कृत्रिमाम् artificial, दीर्घिकां चापि lakes.

Hanuman saw an oblong pond, full of cool water provided with steps, embellished with gems and beautified with pearl dust as sand on its bank. Thronged with many kinds of animals, it looked colourful with large mansions constructed by Visvakarma in the artificial woodlands decorated all over.
ये केचित्पादपास्तत्र पुष्पोपगफलोपगाः।।5.14.35।।

सच्छत्रास्सवितर्दीकास्सर्वे सौवर्णवैदिकाः।


तत्र there, पुष्पोपगफलोपगाः had abundance of flowers and fruits (easily reachable), ये केचित् those few, पादपाः trees, सर्वे all, सच्छत्राः (like) parasols, सवितर्दीकाः having raised benches, सौवर्णवेदिकाः golden platforms.

There the trees had abundance of flowers and fruits. A few trees were full of leaves and branches spread like parasols. There were raised golden platforms.
लताप्रतानैर्बहुभिःपर्णैश्च बहुभिर्वृताम्।।5.14.36।।

काञ्चनीं शिंशुपामेकां ददर्श हरियूथपः।

वृतां हेममयीभिस्तु वेदिकाभिस्समन्ततः।।5.14.37।।


हरियूथपः the monkey leader, बहुभिः with many, लताप्रतानैः with canopies of climbers, बहुभिः with many, पर्णैश्च with leaves also, वृताम् covered, समन्ततः all over, हेममयीभिः with golden, वेदिकाभिः with platforms, वृताम् surrounded, काञ्चनीम् golden, एकाम् a single, शिंशुपाम् Simsupa tree, ददर्श saw.

The monkey leader saw one simsupa tree covered all over with canopies of many climbers and leaves. The tree was surrounded by golden platforms.
सोऽपश्यद्भूमिभागांश्च गर्तप्रस्रवणानि च।

सुवर्णवृक्षानपरान् ददर्श शिखिसन्निभान्।।5.14.38।।


सः he, भूमिभागांश्च pieces of land, गर्तप्रस्रवणानि च streams flowing out of springs, अपरान् other, शिखिसन्निभान् resembling fire, सुवर्णवृक्षान् golden coloured tree, अपश्यत् beheld.

He beheld several pieces of land and streams flowing out of the springs. He also noticed golden trees asresplendent as fire.
तेषां द्रुमाणां प्रभया मेरोरिव दिवाकरः।

अमन्यत तदा वीरः काञ्चनोऽस्मीति वानरः।।5.14.39।।


तदा then, वीरः a hero, वानरः vanara, मेरोः of Meru, प्रभया by the radiance, दिवाकरः इव like the Sun, तेषाम् of those, द्रुमाणाम् of tree, प्रभया by the radiance, काञ्चनः golden, अस्मि was, इति thus, अमन्यत thought.

He saw trees resplendent with golden radiance and thought that he was in the midst of gold like the Sungod getting golden hue by the radiance of Meru, the golden mountain.
तां काञ्चनैस्तरुगणैर्मारुतेन च वीजिताम्।

किङ्किणीशतनिर्घोषां दृष्ट्वा विस्मयमागमत्।।5.14.40।।


काञ्चनैः तरुगणैः with golden trees, मारुतेन by the wind, वीजिताम् fanned, किङ्कणी शतनिर्घोषाम् like the tinkling of a hundred anklets, ताम् that (tree), दृष्ट्वा seeing, विस्मयम् wonder, आगमत् struck.

Hanuman was wonderstruck to hear the sound produced by rows of golden trees which stood round the simsupa tree. This sound resembled the tinkling of a hundred anklets when the wind passed through (their leaves).
स पुष्पिताग्रां रुचिरां तरुणाङ्कुरपल्लवाम्।

तामारुह्य महाबाहुश्शिंशुपां पर्णसंवृताम्।।5.14.41।।


महाबाहुः strongarmed hero, सः he, पुष्पिताग्राम् with flowers blossoming on the top, रुचिराम् lovely, तरुणाङ्कुरपल्लवाम् with tender sprouts and leaves, पर्णसंवृताम् surrounded by leaves, ताम् that, आरुह्य having climbed.

Strongarmed Hanuman climbed up the simsupa tree shining with flowers on its top and surrounded by tender sprouts and leaves. (He said to himself):
इतो द्रक्ष्यामि वैदेहीं रामदर्शनलालसाम्।

इतश्चेतश्च दुःखार्तां सम्पतन्तीं यदृच्छया।।5.14.42।।


रामदर्शनलालसाम् a lady eager to see Rama, वैदेहीम् at Vaidehi, इतः from this place, द्रक्ष्यामि I will see, दुःखार्ताम् a lady filled with sorrow, यदृच्छया casually, इतश्च इतश्च here and there, सम्पतन्तीम् lady moving.

"I may see by chance( from this point) Vaidehi tormented with grief anxiously waiting to see Rama while moving about here and there casually.
अशोकवनिका चेयं दृढं रम्या दुरात्मनः।

चम्पकैश्चन्दनैश्चापि वकुलैश्च विभूषिता।।5.14.43।।


दुरात्मनः of the wicked one, इयम् this, अशोकवनिका Ashoka grove, दृढम् surely, रम्या
beautiful, चम्पकैः by Champak, चन्दनैश्च and Chandan, वकुलैश्चापि and with Bakula also, विभूषिता is decorated.

"Surely this beautiful Ashoka grove with delightful champak, chandan and bakula trees belongs to the wicked Ravana."
इयं च नलिनी रम्या द्विजसङ्घनिषेविता।

इमां सा राममहिषी नूनमेष्यति जानकी।।5.14.44।।


द्विजसङ्घनिषेविता frequented by flocks of water birds, इयम् this, नलिनी च lotuspond, रम्या beautiful, सा she, राममहिषी Rama's queen, जानकी Janaki, नूनम् surely, इमाम् this place, एष्यति she will come.

"This lovely lotuspond is frequented by flocks of aquatic birds. Surely Rama's queen Janaki will come to this place.
सा रामा राममहिषी राघवस्य प्रिया सती।

वनसञ्चारकुशला नूनमेष्यति जानकी।।5.14.45।।


राममहिषी Rama's queen, राघवस्य Raghava's, प्रिया beloved, सती a chaste lady, रामा a beautiful woman, वनसञ्चारकुशला who loves to wander in forests, सा जानकी that Janaki, नूनम् surely, एष्यति she will visit.

"Beautiful Janaki, beloved queen of Rama loves to wander in forests. She will surely visit this grove.
अथवा मृगशाबाक्षी वनस्यास्य विचक्षणा।

वनमेष्यति साऽर्येह रामचिन्तानुकर्शिता।।5.14.46।।


अथवा or may be, मृगशाबाक्षी doeeyed lady, अस्य of this, वनस्य garden's, विचक्षणा familiar with, रामचिन्तानुकर्शिता brooding over Rama, सा that, आर्या noble woman, इह here, वनम् garden, एष्यति will come.

"Or may be that doeeyed noble lady brooding over Rama will come to this garden she is familiar with.
रामशोकाभिसन्तप्ता सा देवी वामलोचना।

वनवासे रता नित्यमेष्यते वनचारिणी।।5.14.47।।


रामशोकाभिसन्तप्ता tormented with over grief Rama's separation, वामलोचना lovelyeyed one, नित्यम् always, वनवासे in the forest, रता enjoying, सा that, देवी devi, वनचारिणी loves strolling in the forest, एष्यते will come.

"That lovelyeyed queen tormented with grief over separation from Rama will be coming here to stay as she always loves strolling in the forest.
वनेचराणां सततं नूनं स्पृहयते पुरा।

रामस्य दयिता भार्या जनकस्यसुता सती।।5.14.48।।


रामस्य Rama's, दयिता dear, भार्या wife, जनकस्य Janaka's, सुता daughter, सती a chaste lady, पुरा earlier, सततम् always, वनेचराणाम् of creatures wandering in the forest, स्पृहयते she likes, नूनम् surely.

"The daughter of Janaka, the chaste wife of Rama, used to for the company of those creatures wandering in the forest.
सन्ध्याकालमनाः श्यामा ध्रुवमेष्यति जानकी।

नदीं चेमां शुभजलां सन्ध्यार्थे वरवर्णिनी।।5.14.49।।


श्यामा beautiful, वरवर्णिनी a lady of lovely complexion, जानकी Janaki, सन्ध्याकालमनाः at the time of twilight, शुभजलाम् sacred waters, इमां नदीम् this river, सन्ध्यार्थे for performing evening ritual, ध्रुवम् surely, एष्यति come.

Surely that lady of lovely complexion, the beautiful Janaki will come to this river
flowing with sacred waters for performing the evening rituals.
तस्याश्चाप्यनुरूपेयमशोकवनिका शुभा।

शुभा या पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य पत्नी रामस्य सम्मता।।5.14.50।।


या she, पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य of the lord of the world, रामस्य Rama's, सम्मता beloved, शुभा auspicious, पत्नी wife, तस्याः her, शुभा auspicious, इयम् this, अशोकवनिका this Ashoka grove, अनुरूपापि च and suitable place.

To the auspicious Sita,the beloved of Rama, the lord of the world, this Ashoka grove is a befitting place.
यदि जीवति सा देवी ताराधिपनिभानना।

आगमिष्यति साऽवश्यमिमां शिवजलां नदीम्।।5.14.51।।


ताराधिपनिभानना moonfaced one, सा देवी that queen, जीवति यदि if she is surviving, सा she, अवश्यम् certainly, इमाम् this, शिवजलाम् a place of auspicious water, नदीम् river, आगमिष्यति she will come.

"The moonfaced queen will certainly come to this stream of auspicious water if she is surviving."
एवं तु मत्वा हनुमान्महात्मा प्रतीक्षमाणो मनुजेन्द्रपत्नीम्।

अवेक्षमाणश्च ददर्श सर्वं सुपुष्पिते पर्णघने निलीनः।।5.14.52।।


महात्मा highsouled, हनुमान् Hanuman, एवम् thus, मत्वा pondering, मनुजेन्द्रपत्नीम् wife of the lord of the people, प्रतीक्षमाणः waiting, सुपुष्पिते on a profusely bloomed, पर्णघने abundant leaves, निलीनः hid himself, अवेक्षमाणश्च looking down, सर्वम् all over, ददर्श saw.

Pondering thus, the highsouled Hanuman remained concealed on the tree loaded with flowers and leaves and waited, looking eagerly for the wife of the lord of the people.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे चतुर्दशस्सर्गः।
Thus ends the fourteenth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
