[Sita reveals her story to Hanuman.]

सोऽवतीर्य द्रुमात्तस्माद्विद्रुमप्रतिमाननः।

विनीतवेषः कृपणः प्रणिपत्योपसृत्य च।।5.33.1।।

तामब्रवीन्महातेजा हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः।

शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधाय सीतां मधुरया गिरा।।5.33.2।।


विद्रुमप्रतिमानन: whose face was like the colour of a coral, महातेजाः shining, मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, सः हनुमान् Hanuman, तस्मात् from that, द्रुमात् from the tree, अवतीर्य having climbed down, विनीतवेषः dressed in a sober manner, कृपणः piteous, प्रणिपत्य having offered salutations, उपसृत्य went near her, शिरसि on his head, अञ्चलिम् having folded palms, आधाय placed, तां सीताम् her, Sita, मधुरया in sweet, गिरा words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Hanuman, son of the Windgod whose face shone like coral, dressed in a sober manner climbed down the tree, went close to Sita, offered salutations with his palms on his head and spoke in sweet words:
का नु पद्मपलाशाक्षि क्लिष्टकौशेयवासिनि।

द्रुमस्य शाखामालम्ब्य तिष्ठसि त्वमनिन्दिते।।5.33.3।।


पद्मपलाशाक्षि O one with eyes like lotus petals, क्लिष्टकौशेयवासिनि robed in crumpled silk, अनिन्दिते blameless lady, द्रुमस्य of the tree, शाखाम् branch, आलम्ब्य by holding, तिष्ठसि you are standing, का नु who are you?

"O blameless lady with eyes like lotus petals, in crumpled silk, holding a branch, and standing, who are you?
किमर्थम् तव नेत्राभ्यां वारि स्रवति शोकजम्।

पुण्डरीकपलाशाभ्यां विप्रकीर्णमिवोदकम्।।5.33.4।।


पुण्डरीकपलाशाभ्याम् from two petals of white lotus, विप्रकीर्णम् trickled, उदकम् इव like water, तव your, नेत्राभ्याम् from your eyes, शोकजम् tears of grief, वारि water, किमर्थम् for what reason, स्रवति is flowing.

"Why are tears of grief flowing from your eyes like water trickling down a pair of petals of white lotuses?
सुराणामसुराणां वा नागगन्धर्वरक्षसाम्।

यक्षाणां किन्नराणां वा का त्वं भवसि शोभने।।5.33.5।।


शोभने O auspicious one, त्वम् you, सुराणाम् among gods, असुराणां वा or demons, नागगन्धर्वरक्षसाम् of nagas, gandharvas, rakshasas, यक्षाणाम् of yakshas, किन्नराणां वा or kinneras, का who, भवसि you are.

"O noble lady, are you a goddess or a demoness, a naga, a gandharva, a rakshasa, a yaksha or a kinnera?
का त्वं भवसि रुद्राणां मरुतां वा वरानने।

वसूनां हि वरारोहे देवता प्रतिभासि मे।।5.33.6।।


वरानने O beautiful lady, त्वम् you, रुद्राणाम् of the Rudras, मरुतां वा or even Marutas, वसूनाम् of Vasus, का who, भवसि you are, वरारोहे O fine woman, देवता goddess, मे to me, प्रतिभासि you appear

"O beautiful lady Do you belong to the race of Rudras, or Marutas, or Vasus?. O noble lady, you appear a goddess to me.
कि नु चन्द्रमसा हीना पतिता विबुधालयात्।

रोहिणी ज्योतिषां श्रेष्ठा श्रेष्ठसर्वगुणान्विता।।5.33.7।।
 

चन्द्रमसा from the Moon, हीना separated, विबुधालयात् from the abode of the gods, पतिता fallen down, ज्योतिषाम् among the luminaries, श्रेष्ठा best one, श्रेष्ठसर्वगुणान्विता who has all best qualities, रोहिणी Rohini किं नु you may be

"are you Rohini, embellished with best virtues among the constellations? Have you come down from the abode of the luminaries separated from the Moon, her lord?
का त्वं भवसि कल्याणि त्वमनिन्दितलोचने।

कोपाद्वा यदि वा मोहाद्भर्तारमसितेक्षणे।।5.33.8।।

वसिष्ठं कोपयित्वा त्वं नासि कल्याण्यरुन्धती।


असितेक्षणे O lady of lovely black eyes, त्वम् you, कोपाद्वा or out of anger, यदि वा or else, मोहात् out of delusion, भर्तारम् husband, वसिष्ठम् Vasistha, कोपयित्वा making him angry, कल्याणि O auspicious lady, अरुन्धती Arundhati, नासि are you not

"O lady of lovely black eyes who are you? Have you by any chance offended your husband out of anger or out of delusion? Are you the auspicious Arundhati dislodged for making your lord Vasistha angry?
को नु पुत्रः पिता भ्राता भर्ता वा ते सुमध्यमे।।5.33.9।।

अस्माल्लोकादमुं लोकं गतं त्वमनुशोचसि।


सुमध्यमे O woman of beautiful waist, अस्मात् from this, लोकात् from the world, अमुं लोकम् to this world, गतम् dead, त्वम् your, अनुशोचसि worrying about, ते your, पुत्रः son, पिता father, भ्राता brother, भर्ता वा or is it husband, को नु is he?

"O woman of beautiful waist from which world have you come here? For whom are you worrying? Who is your son, father, brother or husband? Are you worrying about some one dead?.
रोदनादतिनिश्श्वासाद्भूमिसंस्पर्शनादपि।।5.33.10।।

न त्वां देवीमहं मन्ये राज्ञ स्सर्वज्ञावधारणात्।


रोदनात् from your weeping, अतिनिश्श्वासात् breathing heavily, भूमिसंस्पर्शनादपि your touching the ground, राज्ञः royal, संज्ञावधारणात् having signs of sovereignty, त्वाम् you, देवीम् O goddess, अहम् I, न मन्ये I do not think.

"From your weeping, your sighing and your touching the earth (gods do not touch the earth) and your signs of sovereignty, I do not think you are a goddess (meaning otherwise she posessed divine grace).
व्यञ्जनानि च ते यानि लक्षणानि च लक्षये।।5.33.11।।

महिषी भूमिपालस्य राजकन्या च मे मता।


ते your, यानि those, व्यञ्जनानि signs, लक्षणानि च also qualities, लक्षये I see, भूमिपालस्य king's, महिषी consort, राजकन्या च and a princess, मे to me, मता it is felt.

"On the basis of your royal signs and other qualities I infer that you are the daughter of a king or his consort.
रावणेन जनस्थानाद्बलादपदहृता यदि।।5.33.12।।

सीता त्वमसि भद्रं ते तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः।


त्वम् you, जनस्थानात् from Janasthana, रावणेन by Ravana, बलात् forcibly, अपहृता borne away, सीता Sita, असि यदि if you are, तत् that, पृच्छतः enquiring, मम to me, आचक्ष्व you tell, ते भद्रम् wish you well.

"If you are Sita, who was forcefully borne away by Ravana from Janasthana you may kindly reveal to me freely. May god bless you.
यथा हि तव वै दैन्यं रूपं चाप्यतिमानुषम्।।5.33.13।।

तपसा चान्वितो वेषस्त्वं राममहिषी ध्रुवम्।


तव your, दैन्यम् plight, अतिमानुषम् superhuman, रूपं च and your form, तपसा with austerity, अन्वितः endowed, वेषः your dress, यथा as much, त्वम् you are, ध्रुवम् surely, राममहिषी Rama's queen.

"Indeed your plight, the superhuman beauty and your robes marked with asceticism, surely tell me that you are Rama's queen."
सा तस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा रामकीर्तनहर्षिता।।5.33.14।।

उवाच वाक्यं वैदेही हनुमन्तं द्रुमाश्रितम्।


सा वैदेही that Vaidehi, तस्य his, वचनम् word, श्रुत्वा having heard, रामकीर्तनहर्षिता happy to hear words of praise of Rama, द्रुमाश्रितम् on the tree, हनुमन्तम् Hanuman, वाक्यम् these words, उवाच spoke.

Happy to have heard words of praise of Rama, Vaidehi spoke this to Hanuman, who got up the tree:
पृथिव्यां राजसिंहानां मुख्यस्य विदितात्मनः।।5.33.15।।

स्नुषा दशरथस्याहं शत्रुसैन्यप्रतापिनः।


अहम् I am, पृथिव्याम् on earth, राजसिंहानाम् among great kings, मुख्यस्य foremost, विदितात्मनः of the knower of self, शत्रुसैन्यप्रतापिनः of the slayer of enemy army, दशरथस्य Dasaratha's, स्नुषा daughterinlaw.

"I am daughterinlaw of king Dasaratha, knower of the self, the foremost among kings on earth and a slayer of enemy army.
दुहिता जनकस्याहं वैदेहस्य महात्मनः।।5.33.16।।

सीतेति नाम नाम्नाऽहं भार्या रामस्य धीमतः।


अहम् I am, वैदेहस्य Videha's, महात्मनः great soul, जनकस्य Janaka's, दुहिता daughter, नाम्ना सीतेति नाम Sita by name, अहम् I am, धीमतः of the sagacious, रामस्य Rama's, भार्या wife.

"I am daughter of the great soul, Janaka, king of Videha, known as Sita. I am the wife of that sagacious Rama.
समा द्वादश तत्राहं राघवस्य निवेशने।।5.33.17।।

भुञ्जाना मानुषान्भोगान्सर्वकामसमृद्धिनी।


अहम् I am, तत्र there, राघवस्य Rama's, निवेशने the abode, मानुषान् mortal, भोगान् pleasures, भुञ्जाना experiencing, सर्वकामसमृद्धिनी all kinds of pleasures provided, द्वादश twelve, समाः years.

"I enjoyed worldly pleasures in abundance for twelve years at Rama's abode.
तत्र त्रयोदशे वर्षे राज्येनेक्ष्वाकुनन्दनम्।।5.33.18।।

अभिषेचयितुं राजा सोपाध्यायः प्रचक्रमे।


ततः then, त्रयोदशे in the thirteenth, वर्षे in the year, सोपाध्यायः with his preceptor, राजा the king, इक्ष्वाकुनन्दनम् delight of the Ikshvakus, राज्येन in the kingdom, अभिषेचयितुम् to coronate, प्रचक्रमे arranged.

"Then in the thirteenth year king Dasaratha along with the royal preceptor arranged to coronate Rama, delight of the Ikshvaku family, in the kingdom.
तस्मिन्सम्भ्रियमाणे तु राघवस्याभिषेचने।।5.33.19।।

कैकयी नाम भर्तारं देवी वचनमब्रवीत्।


तस्मिन् in that, राघवस्य Rama's, अभिषेचने in the coronation, सम्भ्रियमाणे while preparations were being made, कैकेयी नाम called Kaikeyi, देवी queen, भर्तारम् to her husband, वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

"While preparations for the coronation were on, queen Kaikeyi said to her husband:
न पिबेयं न खादेयं प्रत्यहं मम भोजनम्।।5.33.20।।

एष मे जीवितस्यान्तो रामो यद्यभिषिच्यते।


न पिबेयम् I shall not drink, प्रत्यहम् daily, भोजनम् food, न खादेयम् I will not eat, रामः Rama, यदि if, अभिषिच्यते is coronated, एषः this is, मे my, जीवितस्य life's, अन्तः end.

'I shall not drink or eat food, if Rama is coronated. I shall end my life this moment.
यत्तदुक्तं त्वया वाक्यं प्रीत्या नृपतिसत्तम।।5.33.21।।

तच्छेन्न वितथं कार्यं वनं गच्छतु राघवः।


नृपतिसत्तम the foremost among kings, त्वया by you, प्रीत्या lovingly, यत् such, तत् वाक्यम् words, उक्तम् spoken, तत् the same, वितथम् false, न कार्यं that promise, यदि if you please, राघवः Rama, वनम् to the forest, गच्छतु go.

'O Dasaratha, the foremost among kings if the promise lovingly made by you earlier is not going to be false, Rama should go to the forest'.
स राजा सत्यवाग्देव्या वरदानमनुस्मरन्।।5.33.22।।

मुमोह वचनं श्रुत्वा कैकेय्याः क्रूरमप्रियम्।


सत्यवाक् ever truthful, सः राजा that king, देव्याः to the queen, वरदानम् boons, अनुस्मरन् remembering, कैकेय्याः of Kaikeyi, क्रूरम् cruel, अप्रियम् unpleasant, वचनम् word, श्रुत्वा having heard, मुमोह fainted.

"Remembering the boons the ever truthful king had granted to Kaikeyi, he fainted after hearing her cruel and harsh words.
ततस्तु स्थविरो राजा सत्ये धर्मे व्यवस्थितः।।5.33.23।।

ज्येष्ठं यशस्विनं पुत्रं रुदन्राज्यमयाचत।


ततः then, सत्ये by truth, धर्मे by rigteousness, व्यवस्थितः one who held, स्थविरः aged, राजा king, रुदन् while crying, यशस्विनम् glorious one, ज्येष्ठम् eldest, पुत्रम् son, राज्यम् kingdom, अयाचत begged.

"The aged king who held on to truthfulness and righteousness begged his famed eldest son Rama to return the kingdom.
स पितुर्वचनं श्रीमानभिषेकात्परं प्रियम्।।5.33.24।।

मनसा पूर्वमासाद्य वाचा प्रतिगृहीतवान्।


श्रीमान् illustrious one, सः he, पितुः father's, वचनम् word, अभिषेकात् more than coronation, परम् supreme, प्रियम् dear, मनसा by his mind, पूर्वम् first, आसाद्य having accepted, वाचा by word, प्रतिगृहीतवान् accepted

"The illustrious Rama who valued his father's word more than sovereignty, bowed to the command of the father.
दद्यान्न प्रतिगृह्णीयान्न ब्रूयात्किञ्चिदप्रियम्।।5.33.25।।

अपि जीवितहेतोर्वा रामस्सत्यपराक्रमः।


सत्यपराक्रमः one whose truthfulness was his strength, रामः Rama, दद्यात् he give,न प्रतिगृह्णीयात् he will not take, जीवितहेतोर्वा even for his life, किञ्चित् even a little, अप्रियम् harsh, न ब्रूयात् he will not speak .

"Rama, whose strength was his truthfulness, gave whatever others sought but would not accept anything in return. He would not speak a harsh word.
स विहायोत्तरीयाणि महार्हाणि महायशाः।।5.33.26।।

विसृज्य मनसा राज्यं जनन्यै मां समादिशत्।


महायशाः a highly renowned, सः he, महार्हाणि luxurious, उत्तरीयाणि upper garments, विहाय cast off, मनसा whole heartedly, राज्यम् kingdom, विसृज्य having given up, माम् me, जनन्यै to his mother, समादिशत् entrusted.

"Having given up the kingdom voluntarily, Rama, a highly renowned king cast off his luxurious upper garments and asked me to take care of his mother.
साहं तस्याग्रतस्तूर्णं प्रस्थिता वनचारिणी।।5.33.27।।

न हि मे तेन हीनाया वासस्स्वर्गेऽपि रोचते।


सा अहम् I myself, वनचारिणी a forestdweller, तूर्णम् quickly, तस्य his, अग्रतः ahead of him, प्रस्थिता started, तेन by him, हीनायाः separated, मे me, स्वर्गेऽपि न रोचते did not prefer even heaven.

"I, however resolved to live in the forest, marched ahead of him quickly as I did not prefer even heaven without him.
प्रागेव तु महाभागस्सौमित्रिर्मित्रनन्दनः।।5.33.28।।

पूर्वजस्यानुयात्रार्थे द्रुमचीरैरलङ्कृतः।


महाभागः a noble one, मित्रनन्दनः a delight to friends, सौमित्रिः Saumitri, प्रागेव already, पूर्वजस्य eldest brother's, अनुयात्रार्थे to follow him, द्रुमचीरैः an bark, अलङ्कृतः dressed.

ते वयं भर्तुरादेशं बहुमान्य दृढव्रताः।।5.33.29।।

प्रविष्टास्स्म पुरादृष्टं वनं गम्भीरदर्शनम्।


ते then वयम् we, भर्तुः king's, आदेशम् order, बहुमान्य respecting, दृढव्रताः resolved firmly, पुरा in the past, अदृष्टम् not seen, गम्भीरदर्शनम् impenetrable, वनम् forest, प्रविष्टाः स्मः we
entered.

"Respecting the king's order and determined firmly, we entered the impenetrable forest.
वसतो दण्डकारण्ये तस्याहममितौजसः।।5.33.30।।

रक्षसाऽपहृता भार्या रावणेन दुरात्मना।


दण्डकारण्ये in the Dandaka forest, वसतः while living, अमितौजसः the most valiant, तस्य his, भार्या wife, अहम् am, दुरात्मना by evilminded, रावणेन by Ravana, अपहृता was abducted.

"While the most valiant Rama was living in the Dandaka forest, I, his wife was borne away by the evilminded Ravana.
द्वौ मासौ तेन मे कालो जीवितानुग्रहः कृतः।।5.33.31।।

ऊर्ध्वं द्वाभ्यां तु मासाभ्यां ततस्तक्ष्यामि जीवितम्।


तेन by him, द्वौ two, मासौ months, मे to me, जीवितानुग्रहः grant of time to live, कृतः given, ततः then, द्वाभ्याम् after the two, मासाभ्याम् months, ऊर्ध्वम् after that, जीवितम् life, त्यक्ष्यामि I will give up.

"He has allowed me two months time to live. After two months I will have to give up my life."
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे त्रयस्त्रिंशस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the thirtythird sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
