[Hanuman once again narrates to Rama, Sita's condition.]

एवमुक्तस्तु हनुमान् राघवेण महात्मना।

सीताया भाषितं सर्वं न्यवेदयत राघवे।।5.67.1।।


महात्मना great soul, राघवेण to Rama, एवम् that way, उक्तः spoken, हनुमान् Hanuman, सीतायाः Sita's, भाषितम् said, सर्वम् everything, राघवे to Rama, न्यवेदयत related.

Thus asked by Sri Rama, Hanuman repeated everything spoken by Sita to Rama.
इदमुक्तवती देवी जानकी पुरुषर्षभ।

पूर्व वृत्तमभिज्ञानं चित्रकूटे यथातथम्।।5.67.2।।


पुरुषर्षभ bull among men, देवी queen, जानकी Janaki, चित्रकूटे at Chitrakuta, पूर्ववृत्तम् incident of the past, अभिज्ञानम् as an identification, यथातथम् as it is, इदम् this, उक्तवती she said.

"O bull among men queen Janaki related to me as a token of identification an incident that had taken place at Chitrakuta in the past.
सुखसुप्ता त्वया सार्धं जानकी पूर्वमुत्थिता।

वायस स्सहसोत्पत्य विददार स्तनान्तरे।।5.67.3।।


त्वया सार्धम् along with you, सुखसुप्ता lying down happily, जानकी Janaki, पूर्वम् earlier, उत्थिता woke up, वायसः a crow, सहसा swiftly, उत्पत्य got up, स्तनान्तरे on her breast, विददार scratched.

"When she was lying on your lap happily she awoke early and a crow came swiftly and scratched on her breast.
पर्यायेण च सुप्तस्त्वं देव्यङ्के भरताग्रज।

पुनश्च किल पक्षी स देव्या जनयति व्यथाम्।।5.67.4।।


भरताग्रज elder brother of Bharata, त्वम् you, पर्यायेण woke up, देव्यङ्के on her lap, सुप्तः slept, सः पक्षी that crow, पुनश्च again, देव्याः Sita's, व्यथाम् hurting, जनयति किल started hurting.

"O Bharata's brother, when Sita awoke from sleep you slept on her lap. The same crow again hurt her.
पुनः पुनरुपागम्य विददार भृशं किल।

ततस्त्वं बोधितस्तस्याश्शोणितेन समुक्षितः।।5.67.5।।
 

पुनः पुनः again and again, उपागम्य coming over her, भृशम् violently, विददार किल started scratching, ततः then, त्वम् you, तस्याः her, शोणितेन by blood, समुक्षितः wet by shedding, बोधितः किल woke you up.

Again and again the crow came to her and scratched her. She woke you up as you were getting wet with blood shed from her body.
वायसेन च तेनैव सततं बाध्यमानया।

बोधितः किल देव्या त्वं सुखसुप्तः परन्तप।।5.67.6।।


परन्तप scorcher of enemies, तेन by that, वायसेनैव by the crow, सततम् repeatedly, बाध्यमानया pained, देव्या by the divine lady, सुखसुप्तः sleeping happily, त्वम् you, बोधितः किल woke you up and informed you.

"O scorcher of enemies pained by the crow hurting her repeatedly, while you were sleeping happily, she woke you up and informed you about it.
तां तु दृष्ट्वा महाबाहो दारितां च स्तनान्तरे।

आशीविष इव क्रुद्धो निश्वसन्नभ्यभाषथाः।।5.67.7।।


महाबाहो one with strong arms, स्तनान्तरे from the breasts, दारिताम् flowing, ताम् her, दृष्ट्वा seeing, क्रुद्धः furious, आशीविष इव like a serpent, निश्वसन् sighing, अभ्यभाषथाः you said this.

"Seeing the blood flowing from her breasts you became furious like a hissing serpent and said:
नखाग्रैः केन ते भीरु दारितं तु स्तनान्तरम्।

कः क्रीडति सरोषेण पञ्चवक्त्रेण भोगिना।।5.67.8।।


भीरु timid, ते you, स्तनान्तरम् from the breasts, केन who, नखाग्रैः with the tip of the nails, दारितम् scratched, सरोषेण furious, पञ्चवक्त्रेण भोगिना fivehooded serpent, कः who, क्रीडति sported.

"You are of timid nature. Who has scratched your breasts with the tip of the nail? Who is sporting with an enraged fivehooded serpent"?
निरीक्षमाणस्सहसा वायसं समवैक्षथाः।

नखै स्सरुधिरैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तामेवाभिमुखं स्थितम्।।5.67.9।।


निरीक्षमाणः seeing all over, सरुधिरैः with blood, तीक्ष्णैः sharp, नखैः nails, तामेव of her, अभिमुखम् in front of, स्थितम् stood, वायसम् crow, सहसा at once, समवैक्षथाः glanced.

'Seeing all over, at once I glanced at the crow that stood in front of her with sharp bloodstained nails'.
सुतः किल स शक्रस्य वायसः पततां वरः।

धरान्तरचरश्शीघ्रं पवनस्य गतौ समः।।5.67.10।।


पतताम् among birds, वरः foremost, सः वायसः that crow, शक्रस्य Indra's, पुत्रः son, किल moving about, धरान्तरगतः all over the earth, शीघ्रम् swiftly, गतौ flying, पवनस्य windgod's speed, समः equal.

'That crow, the foremost of the birds was the son of Indra moving about all over the earth swiftly. His speed matched the Windgod's.
ततस्तस्मिन्महाबाहो कोपसंवर्तितेक्षणः।

वायसे त्वं कृथाः क्रूरां मतिं मतिमतां वर।।5.67.11।।


महाबाहो longarmed one, मतिमताम् very wise one, वर reverred, त्वम् you, कोपसंवर्तितेक्षणः anguished, ततः then, तस्मिन् its, वायसे the crow's, क्रूराम् cruel, मतिम् in your mind, कृथाः decision took.

'O longarmed, wise and revered Rama, then in anguish you took a cruel decision'.
स दर्भं संस्तराद्गृह्य ब्रह्मास्त्रेण ह्ययोजयः।

स दीप्त इव कालाग्निर्जज्वालाभिमुखः खगम्।।5.67.12।।


सः he, संस्तरात् from your mat, दर्भम् a blade of grass, गृह्य took out, ब्राह्मेण अस्त्रेण by the mantra of the weapon of Brahma, योजयत् chanted, सः he, दीप्तः blazed, कालाग्निरिव like the fire of the demon's day, द्विजम् bird, अभिमुखः towards the direction, जज्वाल hurled.

'You took out a blade of grass from your mat and chanted the mantra to invoke the weapon of Brahma (Brahmastra) and hurled it on the crow. It blazed like the fire of the doom's day.
क्षिप्तवांस्त्वं प्रदीप्तं हि दर्भं तं वायसं प्रति।

ततस्तु वायसं दीप्तस्स दर्भोऽनुजगाम ह।।5.67.13।।


त्वम् yourself, प्रदीप्तम् blazing, तं दर्भम् that blade of grass, वायसं प्रति over the crow, क्षिप्तवान् burning, ततः then, सः दर्भः that blade of grass, दीप्तः glowing like fire, वायसम् to
the crow, अनुजगाम ह chased.

'You hurled the blazing blade of grass on to the crow. That burning blade of grass chased the crow.
स पित्रा च परित्यक्तस्सुरैश्च समहर्षिभिः।

त्रीन् लोकान् सम्परिक्रम्य त्रातारं नाधिगच्छति।।5.67.14।।


सः he, पित्रा च by the father, समहर्षिभिः even the great sages, सुरैश्च and gods, परित्यक्तः abandoned, त्रीन् three, लोकान् worlds, सम्परिक्रम्य went round also, त्रातारम् saviour, नाधिगच्छति was not found.

'He was abandoned by his father, even by great sages and gods. Then he went round the three worlds but could not find a saviour.
पुनरेवागतस्त्रस्तस्त्वत्सकाशमरिंदम।

स तं निपतितं भूमौ शरण्यश्शरणागतम्।।5.67.15।।

वधार्हमपि काकुत्स्थ कृपया पर्यपालयः।


अरिन्दम destroyer of enemies, त्रस्तः trembling, पुनरेव again, त्वत्सकाशम् that crow, आगतः came back, शरण्यः for protection, सः काकुत्स्थ: to Rama, शरणागतम् seeking protection, भूमौ on earth, निपतितम् fell down, तम् him, वाधर्हमपि that which deserved to be slayed, कृपया in compassion, पर्यपालय: saved.

'O destroyer of enemies the crow came back again to you trembling seeking protection from you and fell on the ground. Even though it deserved to be slayed, you saved him out of compassion.
मोघमस्त्रं न शक्यं तु कर्तुमित्येव राघव।।5.67.16।।

भवांस्तस्याक्षि काकस्य हिनस्ति स्म स दक्षिणम्।


राघव Rama, अस्त्रम् weapon, मोघम् divine one, कर्तुम् to withdraw, न शक्यम् not possible, इत्येव therefore, भवान् you, तस्य काकस्य that crow, दक्षिणम् अक्षि right eye, हिनस्ति स्म struck.

'O Rama since a divine weapon cannot be withdrawn, it did strike his right eye'.
राम त्वां स नमस्कृत्य राज्ञे दशरथाय च।।5.67.17।।

विसृष्टस्तु तदा काक प्रतिपेदे स्वमालयम्।


राम Rama, तदा thereafter, सः काकः that crow, विसृष्टः having left it without killing, त्वाम् him, राज्ञे to king, दशरथाय च Dasaratha, नमस्कृत्य offered salutations, स्वम् to you, आलयम् his abode, प्रतिपेदे returned.

'Thereafter that crow left without killing offered salutations to you and king Dasaratha and returned to his abode.
एवमस्त्रविदां श्रेष्ठस्सत्त्ववान् शीलवानपि।।5.67.18।।

किमर्थमस्त्रं रक्षस्सु न योजयति राघवः।


शीलवानपि of good conduct, राघव Rama, एवम् that way, अस्त्रविदाम् among wielders of weapons, श्रेष्ठः foremost, सत्यवान् truthful, बलवानपि powerful, रक्षस्सु on demons, अस्त्रम् weapons, किमर्थम् for what reason, न योजयति not directing.

'You are efficient, foremost among wielders of weapons, truthful and powerful. Why are you not directing weapons against the demons?
न नागा नापि गन्धर्वा नासुरा न मरुद्गणाः।।5.67.19।।

न च सर्वे रणे शक्ता रामं प्रतिसमासितुम्।


रणे in war, रामं प्रति to face Rama, प्रतिसमासितुम् to stand in front of you, नागाः nagas, न शक्ताः not possible, गन्धर्वाः अपि even gandharvas, न असुराः not even asuras, न not, मरुद्गणाः Marutas, न not, सर्वे all, न not possible.

'It is not possible for nagas, gandharvas, even asuras or Marutas to confront Rama in war.
तस्य वीर्यवतः कश्चिद्यद्यस्ति मयि सम्भ्रमः।।5.67.20।।

क्षिप्रं सुनिशितैर्बाणैर्हन्यतां युधि रावणः।


वीर्यवतः very valiant one, तस्य his, मयि my, सम्भ्रमः anxiety, अस्ति यदि if he has, सुनिशितैः sharp, बाणैः arrows, रावणः Ravana, क्षिप्रम् immediately, युधि in battle, हन्यताम् will slay.

'If you have any anxiety about me, you will certainly slay Ravana in the battle immediately with your sharp arrows'.
भ्रातुरादेशमाज्ञाय लक्ष्मणो वा परन्तपः।।5.67.21।।

स किमर्थं नरवरो न मां रक्षति राघवः।


परन्तपः scorcher of enemies, नरवरः best of men, राघवः Rama, सः लक्ष्मणो वा or even Lakshmana, भ्रातुः brother's, आदेशम् instruction, आज्ञाय getting, माम् me, किमर्थम् for what reason, न रक्षति not protecting me.

'For what reason is the the scorcher of enemies, Lakshmana, the best of men also does not protect me at the behest of Rama, his brother?
शक्तौ तौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ वाय्वग्निसमतेजसौ ।।5.67.22।।

सुराणामपि दुर्धर्षौ किमर्थं मामुपेक्षतः।


शक्तौ in power, वाय्वग्निसमतेजसौ equal to wind and fire, पुरुषव्याघ्रौ tigers among men, तौ they both, सुराणाम् suras, दुर्धर्षौ यदि अपि being even unassailable, माम् me, किमर्थम् why, उपेक्षतः neglecting.

'Why are the two tigers among men whose power is like that of wind and fire and who are unassailable even to suras are neglecting me?
ममैव दुष्कृतं किञ्चिन्महदस्ति न संशयः।।5.67.23।।

समर्थौ सहितौ यन्मां नावेक्षेते परन्तपौ।


ममैव have I, महत् great, किञ्चित् any, दुष्कृतम् sin, अस्ति done, संशयः doubt, न no, यत् that which, समर्थावपि even though capable, परन्तपौ the scorchers of enemies, तौ they both, माम् my, न अवेक्षेते not doing so.

'Have I done any great sin because of which even though both the scorchers of enemies are capable, they are not doing so?'
वैदेह्या वचनं श्रुत्वा करुणं साश्रु भाषितम्।

पुनरप्यहमार्यां तामिदं वचनमब्रुवम्।।5.67.24।।


करुणम् piteous, साश्रुभाषितम् those good words, वैदेह्याः of Vaidehi, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, अहम् I, पुनरपि once again, ताम् आर्याम् her the noble one, इदम् these, वचनम् words, अब्रवम् said.

"On hearing Vaidehi's piteous words, I once again said this to the noble lady:
त्वच्छोकविमुखो रामो देवि सत्येन ते शपे।।5.67.25।।

रामे दुःखाभिभूते तु लक्ष्मणः परितप्यते।


देवि O divine lady, रामः Rama, त्वच्छोकविमुखः out of grief not interested in any thing, सत्येन truly, ते to you, शपे swear, रामे Rama, दुःखाभिपन्ने filled with sorrow, लक्ष्मणः च and Lakshmana, परितप्यते deeply afflicted.

'O divine lady I swear to you on my truthfulness, that out of grief for you Rama is not interested in anything else and Lakshmana is deeply afflicted because Rama is overhelmed with grief.
कथञ्चिद्भवती दृष्टा न कालः परिशोचितुम्।।5.67.26।।

अस्मिन्मुहूर्ते दुःखानामन्तं द्रक्ष्यसि भामिनि।


भामिनि O lovely lady, कथञ्चित् somehow, भवती you, दृष्टा saw, परिदेवितुम् for lamentation, कालः time, न not, इमम् this, मुहूर्तम् moment, दुःखानाम् grief, अन्तम् end, द्रक्ष्यसि will see.

'O lovely lady somehow I could discover you. This is not the moment for lamentation.Your grief will end.
तावुभौ नरशार्दूलौ राजपुत्रावनिन्दितौ।।5.67.27।।

त्वद्दर्शनकृतोत्साहौ लङ्कां भस्मीकरिष्यतः।


नरशार्दूलौ tigers among men, अनिन्दितौ blameless, महाबलौ mighty, त्वद्दर्शनकृतोत्साहौ eager to see you, उभौ both, तौ राजपुत्रौ the two princes, लङ्काम् to Lanka, भस्मीकरिष्यतः will reduce to ashes.

'The two princes, tigers among men are blameles. They are anxious to see you. They will reduce this Lanka into ashes.
हत्वा च समरे रौद्रं रावणं सह बान्धवम्।।5.67.28।।

राघवस्त्वां वरारोहे स्वां पुरीं नयते ध्रुवम्।


वरारोहे fairhipped lady, राघवः Rama, रौद्रम् fearsome, सहबान्धवम् and his ralatives, रावणम् Ravana, समरे in war, हत्वा च and slay, त्वाम् you, स्वां पुरीम् his city, नयते take you, ध्रुवम् certain.

'O fairhipped lady Rama will slay fearsome Ravana and all his relatives and take you to his city. It is certain.
यत्तु रामो विजानीयादभिज्ञानमनिन्दिते।।5.67.29।।

प्रीतिसञ्जननं तस्य प्रदातुं त्वमिहार्हसि।


अनिन्दिते O blameless one, रामः Rama, यत् that which, विजानीयात् he knows, तस्य its, प्रीतिसञ्जननम् that which gives happiness, अभिज्ञानम् knowing, इह here, दातुम् to give, त्वम् you, अर्हसि is proper for you.

'O blameless lady you should give me that which he would be glad to recognise as a token.'
साभिवीक्ष्य दिशस्सर्वा वेण्युद्ग्रथितमुत्तमम्।।5.67.30।।

मुक्त्वा वस्त्राद्ददौ मह्यं मणिमेतं महाबल।


महाबल mighty Rama, सा she, सर्वाः all, दिशः directions, अभिवीक्ष्य glancing at, वेण्युद्ग्रथितम् that which is worn on her hair, उत्तमम् best one, एतं मणिम् this gem, वस्त्रात् from her cloth, मुक्त्वा untied, मह्यम् to me, ददौ gave.

"O mighty Rama, she glanced at all directions and untied the end of her garment in which she had this best jewel worn on her hair preserved and gave it to me.
प्रतिगृह्य मणिं दिव्यं तव हेतो रघूद्वह।।5.67.31।।

शिरसा तां प्रणम्यार्यामहमागमने त्वरे।


रघूद्वह foremost among the Raghus, दिव्यम् wonderful, मणिम् gem, तव हेतोः for your sake, प्रतिगृह्य took, आर्याम् from the noble lady, ताम् her, शिरसा bowing down, प्रणम्य after saluting, अहम् I, आगमने returned, त्वरे quickly.

"O foremost among the Raghus I took that wonderful gem for your sake from the noble lady and offered her salutations, bowing my head, and returned quickly৷৷
गमने च कृतोत्साहमवेक्ष्य वरवर्णिनी।।5.67.32।।

विवर्धमानं च हि मामुवाच जनकात्मजा।


वरवर्णिनी of fine complexion, जनकात्मजा Janaka's daughter, गमने to start, कृतोत्साहम् with
eagerness, विवर्धमानं च increasing, माम् me, आवेक्ष्य seeing, उवाच spoke.

"Seeing me eager to depart and growing in size, the loving daughter of Janaka said.
अश्रुपूर्णमुखी दीना बाष्पसन्दिग्धभाषिणी।।5.67.33।।

ममोत्पतनसम्भ्रान्ता शोकवेगसमाहता।


अश्रुपूर्णमुखी face filled with tears, दीना dejected, बाष्पसन्दिग्धभाषिणी throat choked with tears, मम me, उत्पतनसम्भ्रान्ता despondent at my departue, शोकवेगसमाहता shedding tears profusely.

"She was dejected. Her face was filled with tears. Despondent at my departure, she shed tears profusely and said:
हनुमन् सिंहसंकाशावुभौ तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ।।5.67.34।।

सुग्रीवञ्च सहामात्यं सर्वान् ब्रूया ह्यनामयम्।


हनुमन् Hanuman, सिंहसंकाशौ resembling lion, तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ both Rama and Lakshmana, उभौ both, सहामात्यम् and his ministers, सुग्रीवञ्च and to Sugriva, सर्वान् to all, अनामयम् my welfare, ब्रूयाः tell.

'Hanuman tell both Rama and Lakshman who are like two lions, Sugriva and his ministers about my welfare.
यथा च स महाबाहुर्मां तारयति राघवः।

अस्माद्धुःखाम्बुसंरोधात्त्वं समाधातुमर्हसि।।5.67.35।।


महाबाहुः strongarmed one, सः राघवः that Rama, अस्मात् from this, दुःखाम्बुसंरोधात् ocean of sorrow, यथा that way, तारयति to relieve, त्वम् you, समाधातुम् make arangements, अर्हसि is right.

'You may go and tell mighty Rama to make arrangements to relieve me from this
ocean of sorrow.
इमं च तीव्रं मम शोकवेगं रक्षोभिरेभिः परिभर्त्सनं च।

ब्रूयास्तु रामस्य गतस्समीपम् शिवश्च तेऽध्वास्तु हरिप्रवीर।।5.67.36।।


हरिप्रवीर foremost among the heroic monkeys, रामस्य to Rama, समीपम् near, गतः having gone, मम my, इमम् this, तीव्रम् intense, शोकवेगम् intensity of my sorrow, एभिः this also, रक्षोभिः shedemons women, परिभर्त्सनं च threatening me, ब्रूयाः should tell, ते you, अध्वा speeding on journey, शिवः auspicious, अस्तु let it be.

'O foremost among the heroic monkeys approaching Rama, you should tell him the intensity of my sorrow and the threatening of the shedemons. Let your journey be speedy and auspicious.'
एतत्तवार्या नृपराजसिंह सीता वचः प्राह विषादपूर्वम्।

एतच्च बुद्ध्वा गदितं मया त्वं श्रद्धत्स्व सीतां कुशलां समग्राम्।।5.67.37।।


पराजसिंह lion among kings, आर्या noble, सीता Sita, विषादपूर्वम् sorrowful words, एतत् वचः all these words, तव your, आह spoken, मया my, गदितम् reflecting, तत् all this, बुद्ध्वा make him know, सीताम् Sita, समग्राम् in all respects, कुशलाम् safe, श्रद्धत्स्व have faith.

"O lion among kings noble Sita has spoken these words in grief: 'Make him know all this and tell him that Sita is faithful and safe in all respects.'
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे सप्तषष्टितमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the sixtyseventh sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
