[Hearing Hanuman's report, Rama praises him and embraces.]

śrutvā hanumatō vākyaṅ yathāvadabhibhāṣitam .

rāmaḥ prītisamāyuktō vākyamuttaramabravīt ।।6.1.1।।


rāmaḥ Rama, yathāvat: in that manner, abhibhāṣitam : spoken , hanumataḥ by Hanuman, vākyam: words,śrutvā: having heard, prītisamāyuktaḥ filled with love, uttarama: replied, vākyam: words, abravīt: said

Having heard Hanuman's words, full of love, Rama replied.
kṛtaṅ hanumatā kāryaṅ sumahadbhuvi durlabham .

manasāpi yadanyēna na śakyaṅ dharaṇītalē ।।6.1.2।।


hanumatā: Hanuman, yat: such , dharaṇītalē: on this earth, anyēna: by any one, manasāpi: even to think, naśakyam: not possible, sumahat: mighty, bhuvi: world, durlabham: difficult, kāryam: task, kṛtam: has performed.

"Hanuman! You have performed a mighty task indeed, which is difficult even to think of in this world and not possible for any one else on this earth."
na hi taṅ paripaśyāmi yastarēta mahārṇavam .

anyatra garuḍādvāyōranyatra ca hanūmataḥ ।।6.1.3।।


garuḍāt: by Garuda( the vehicle of Visnu ), vāyōḥ by wind-god, anyatra: anyone other than, hanūmataḥ by Hanuman, anyatra: none other than, yaḥ this, mahārṇavam: great ocean, tarēta: can cross, hi: indeed, paripaśyāmi: not seen

"None else than Garuda or Vayu have I seen to have crossed this great ocean crossed by you, Hanuman."
dēvadānavayakṣāṇāṅ gandharvōragarakṣasām .

apradhṛṣyāṅ purīṅ laṅkāṅ rāvaṇēna surakṣitām .

pravaṣṭa ssattvamāśrityaśvasankō nāma niṣkramēt ।।6.1.4।।


dēvadānavayakṣāṇām: for devas, danavas, yakshas, gandharvōragarakṣasāmgandharvōragarakṣasām gandharvas ,uragas , rakshasas, apradhṛṣyām: unimaginable to cross, rāvaṇēna: by Ravana, surakṣitām: highly protected, purīm: city, sattvam: strength, āśritya: resorted, praviṣṭaḥ enter, kō nāma: who indeed, śvasan: life, niṣkramēt: can return

"Indeed, who has the strength to return alive after entering that city highly protected by Ravana. It is unimaginable even for devas, danavas, yakshas, gandharvas, uragas and rakshasas to cross."
kō viśētsudurādharṣāṅ rākṣasaiśca surakṣitām .

yō vīryabalasampannō na samasyāddhanūmataḥ ।।6.1.5।।


yaḥ he who , vīryabalasampannaḥ abounding in valour and strength, hanūmataḥ Hanuman, nasyāt: not possible , kaḥ which sudurādharṣām: inaccessible, rākṣasaiḥ by rakshasas, surakṣitām: highly protected, viśēt: to enter

"Except for Hanuman, who is abounding in valour and strength, it is not possible for others to enter the inaccessible Lanka highly protected by rakshasas."
bhṛtyakāryaṅ hanumatā sugrīvasya kṛtaṅmahat .

svayaṅ vidhāya svabalaṅ sadṛśaṅ vikramasya ca ।।6.1.6।।


hanumatā: Hanuman, vikramasya: by his valour, sadṛśam: mighty form, svabalam: own strength, vidhāya: what ought to be done, sugrīvasya: Sugriva's, mahat: great, bhṛtyakāryam: task assigned, kṛtam: carried out

"Hanuman, with his mighty form and valour not only carried out a great task assigned by Sugriva but also what had to be done as duty."
yō hi bhṛtyō niyuktassanbhartrā karmaṇi duṣkarē .

kuryāttadanurāgēṇa tamāhuḥ puruṣōttamam ।।6.1.7।।


yaḥ he who, bhṛtyaḥ servant, duṣkarē: formidable, karmaṇi: task, bhartrā: master, niyuktaḥ entrusted by, san: bestow, tat: that, anurāgēṇa: with love, kuryāt: does, tam: him, puruṣōttamam: the best among men, āhuḥ is said to be

"He, who carries out a formidable task entrusted to him by the master, with love is said to be the best among men."
niyuktōya: paraṅ kāryaṅ na kuryānnṛpatēḥ priyam .

bhṛtyō.bhṛtyassamarthō.pi tamāhurmadhyamaṅ naram ।।6.1.8।।


yaḥ he, bhṛtyaḥ is a servant, samartha: efficient, abhṛtya: not a servant, niyuktaḥ told, nṛpatē: by king, priyam: dear, kāryam: work, param: other, nakuryāt: does not do, tam: him, naram: mediocre, ahu: said to be

An efficient servant does not only do what is asked but also does the work dear to the king. One who does not do so is said to be mediocre.
niyuktō nṛpatēḥ kāryaṅ na kuryādyassamāhitaḥ .

bhṛtyō yuktassamarthaśca tamāhuḥ puruṣādhamam ।।6.1.9।।


niyuktaḥ one who is entrusted, yaḥ he , bhṛtyaḥ servant, yuktaḥ capable, samarthaśca: who is efficient, nṛpatēḥ by the king, kāryam: work, samāhitaḥ who has agreed, kuryāt: not do the work , tam: him, puruṣādhamam: lowly person, ahuḥ said to be

"If one who is capable and efficient has been entrusted with a task by a king and fails to do the work agreed to, is said to be a lowly person."
tanniyōgē niyuktēna kṛtaṅ kṛtyaṅ hanūmatā .

na cātmā laghutāṅ nītassugrīvaścāpi tōṣitaḥ ।।6.1.10।।


tat: that, niyōgē: assigned, niyuktēna: which is favourable, hanūmatā: Hanuman, kṛtyam: had to be done, kṛtam: having accomplished, ātmā: on his own, laghutām :difficulty, na: not, nītaḥ carried out sugrīvaścāpi: even to Sugriva, tōṣitaḥ made happy

"Having done the task assigned to him, Hanuman carried out what had to be done and accomplished without difficulty. This made Sugriva also happy."
ahaṅ ca raghuvaṅśaśca lakṣmaṇaśca mahābalaḥ .

vaidēhyā darśanēnādya dharmataḥ parirakṣitāḥ ।।6.1.11।।


vaidēhyā: Vaidehi's, darśanēna: by seeing, adya: now, ahaṅ ca: I am also, raghuvaṅśaśca: those of Raghu dynasty, mahābalaḥ mighty, lakṣmaṇaśca: Lakshmana's, dharmataḥ rightfully, parirakṣitāḥ protected.

"On Hanuman finding Vaidehi, I and, mighty Lakshmana and the whole of Raghu dynasty are now rightfully protected."
idaṅ tu mama dīnasya manō bhūyaḥ prakarṣati .

yadihāsya priyākhyāturna kurmi sadṛśaṅ priyam ।।6.1.12।।


tu: on the other hand, priyākhyātuḥ who has spoken pleasing words, asya: to him, sadṛśam: to see, priyam: pleasing, yat na kurmi: not able to do to such person, idam: this, dīnasya: piteous, mama: me, manaḥ mind bhūyaḥ further, prakarṣati: causing exceedingly

"On the other hand, it is a pity that I am not able to please such a person who has spoken pleasing words. Further this causes grief to me."
ēṣa sarvasvabhūtē pariṣvaṅgō hanūmataḥ .

mayā kālamimaṅ prāpya dattastasya mahātmanaḥ ।।6.1.13।।


mayā: me, imam: such, kālam: time, prāpya: attained, mahātmanaḥ great person, tasya: to him, hanūmataḥ Hanuman, sarvasvabhūtaḥ everything, ēṣaḥ pariṣvaṅgaḥ this embrace, mē dattaḥ that I give*

"To such a great one who attained success at this time, everything can be given. I give my embrace."
ityuktvā prītihṛṣṭāṅgō rāmastaṅ pariṣasvajē .

hanūmantaṅ kṛtātmānaṅ kṛtakāryamupāgatam ।।6.1.14।।


rāmaḥ Rama, iti: thus, uktvā: having said, prītihṛṣṭāṅgaḥ experiencing the joy of love all over the body, kṛtātmānam: one who has accomplished, kṛtakāryam: his duty, upāgatam: returned back, taṅ hanūmantam: to him, Hanuman, pariṣasvajē: embraced.

Having said so, Rama experienced the joy of love all over his body and embraced Hanuman who returned successful.
dhyātvā punaruvācēdaṅ vacanaṅ raghunandanaḥ .

harīṇāmīśvarasyāpi sugrīvasyōpaśṛṇvataḥ ।।6.1.15।।


raghunandanaḥ Rama the delight of Raghu dynasty, dhyātvā: thought over , harīṇām: of monkeys, īśvarasya: lord, sugrīvasya: Sugriva's, upaśṛṇvataḥ while listening, punaḥ again, idaṅ vacanam: these words, uvāca: spoke

Rama, the delight of Raghu dynasty thought over and said while Sugriva, the lord of monkeys was still listening.
sarvathā sukṛtaṅ tāvatsītāyāḥ parimārgaṇam .

sāgaraṅ tu samāsādya punarnaṣṭaṅ manō mama ।।6.1.16।।


sītāyāḥ Sita's, parimārgaṇam: in searching, sarvathā: by all means, sukṛtam: good work, tu: but( on the contrary), sāgaram: ocean, samāsādya : having succeeded, mama manaḥ my mind, punaḥ again, naṣṭam: fear

"By all means good work was done in searching for Sita. On the contrary, having succeeded, my mind is once again agitated when I think of (crossing) the ocean."
kathaṅ nāma samudrasya duṣpārasya mahāmbhasaḥ .

harayō dakṣiṇaṅ pāraṅ gamiṣyanti samāgatāḥ ।।6.1.17।।


samāgatāḥ come together, haraya: monkeys, duṣpārasya: difficult to cross, mahāmbhasaḥ vast ocean, samudrasya: ocean's, dakṣiṇam: southern, pāram: shore, katham: how can, gamiṣyanti: be able to cross

"How will all the monkeys together be able to cross to the southern shore of the vast ocean? It is difficult to cross."
yadyapyēṣa tu vṛttāntō vaidēhyā gaditō mama .

samudrapāragamanē harīṇāṅ kimihōttaram ।।6.1.18।।


vaidēhyā: to Vaidehi, ēṣaḥ all this , vṛttāntaḥ matter, mama: by me , gaditō: told, yadyapi: even though, harīṇām: the monkeys, samudrapāragamanē : to cross the ocean, uttaram: enquired, kim: what

"This has been told to me by Vaidehi. How will the monkeys cross the ocean(enquired Vaidehi)."
ityuktavā śōkasambhrāntō rāma śśatrunibarhaṇaḥ .

hanūmantaṅ mahābāhustatō dhyānamupāgamat ।।6.1.19।।


śatrunibarhaṇaḥ destroyer of enemy, mahābāhuḥ mighty armed, rāmaḥ Rama , hanūmantam: at Hanuman, iti: thus, uktvā: said, śōkasaṅbhrāntaḥ agitated with sorrow, dhyānam: reflected, upāgamat: approaching

Agitated with sorrow, mighty armed Rama, the destroyer of enemies approached Hanuman and reflected (about the crossing of the ocean).
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē yuddhakāṇḍē prathamassargaḥ
This is the end of the first Sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
