[Rama and Ravana armed with excellent bows and powerful missiles begin to fight.]

mahōdaramahāpāraśavauhataudṛṣaṭavāturākaṣa .

tasamiṅśacanihatēvīrēvirūpākaṣēmahābalē ।।6.100.1।।

āvivēśamahāna karōdhōrāvaṇaṅtumahāmṛdhē .

sūtaṅ sañacōdayāmāsa vākayaṅ cēdamuvāca ha ।।6.100.2।।


rākaṣasau Rakshasas, mahōdaramahāpāraśavau Mahodara and Mahaparsva, hatau killed, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, mahābalē of extraordinary might, tasamina therefore, virūpākaṣē Virupaksha, nihatē killed, mahāmṛdhē in that great war, rāvaṇama Ravana, mahāna highly, karōdhaḥ infuriated, āvivēśa urged, sūtama charioteer, sañacōdayāmāsa addressed, idama these, vākayama ca words, uvāca spoke

On seeing Mahodara and Mahaparsva killed in the great war, Virupaksha of extraordinary might also killed, Ravana was highly infuriated and addressed the charioteer in the following words.
nihatānāmamātayānāṅrudadhasayanagarasaya ca .

duḥkhamēvāpanēṣayāmi hatayā tau rāmalakaṣamaṇau ।।6.100.3।।


tau both, rāmalakaṣamaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, hatavā killing, nihatānāma will return, amātayānāma ministers, rudadhasaya killed, nagarasaya ca and to Lanka, duḥkhama suffering, apanēṣayāmayēva relieve them of sorrow

"On killing both Rama and Lakshmana, I will relieve the sorrow of ministers killed and of Lanka from suffering.
rāmavṛkaṣaṅraṇēhamanisītāpuṣapaphalaparadama .

paraśākhāyasayasugarīvōjāmabavānakumudōnalaḥ ।।6.100.4।।

dividaśacaivamainadaśacaaṅagadōganadamādanaḥ .

hanumāṅśacasuṣēṇavacasaravē ca hariyūthapāḥ ।।6.100.5।।


yasaya in that, sugarīvaḥ Sugriva, jāmabavāna Jambavan, kumudaḥKumuda, davividaśacaiva Dwivida also, mainadaśaca Mainda, aṅagadaḥ Angada, ganadhamādanaḥ Gandhamadana, hanumāṅśaca Hanuman also, suṣēṇaśaca Sushena, saravē all, hariyūthapāśaca Vanara army, paraśākhāḥ principal branches, sītāpuṣapaphalaparadama which is going to yield fruit in the form of Sita, rāmavṛkaṣama tree in the shape of Rama, raṇē in battle, hamani cut down

That tree in the shape of Rama for which Sugriva, Jambavan, Kumuda, Dwivida, Mainda, Angada, Gandhamadana and Hanuman are the principal branches, that tree which will yield flowers and fruit in the shape of Sita will be cut down in the battle.
sa diśōdaśaghōṣēṇarathasayātirathōmahāna .

nādayana parayayautūraṇaṅrāghavaṅcābhayadhāvata ।।6.100.6।।


mahāna great, atirathaḥ surpassing charioteer, saḥhe, rathasaya chariot's, ghōṣēṇa noise, daśa ten, diśaḥdirections, nādayana noise, tūraṇama quickly, parayayau rushed, rāghavama Raghava, abhayadhāvata towards

Ravana, the great charioteer, who could surpass many rushed quickly towards Raghava, by the chariot making great noise reverberating in all directions.
pūritātēnaśabadēnasanadīgirikānanā .

sañacacāla mahī saravā tarasatasiṅhamṛgadavijā ।।6.100.7।।


sanadīgirikānanā rivers, mountains and forests, tarasatasiṅhamṛgadavijā boars, lions and other beasts, saravā all, mahī earth, tēnaśabadēna by the sound, pūritā filled, sañacacāla shaken

By that sound, the rivers, mountains, and forests including the earth, filled with the boars, lions and other beasts were shaken.
tāmasaṅsumahāghōraṅcakārāsataraṅsudāruṇama .

niradadāhakapīna saravāṅsatēparapētuḥsamanatataḥ ।।6.100.8।।


sumahāghōrama exceedingly formidable, sudāruṇama most dreadful, tāmasama Taamasa (presided over by Rahu, consisting of darkness), asatarama missile, cakāra released, saravāna all, kapīna monkeys, niradadāha burn, tē they, samanatataḥ all sides, parapētuḥfallen

He released an exceedingly formidable weapon called Taamasa which consumed all the monkeys all over and had fallen.
utapapātarajōbhūmautairabhaganaiḥsamaparadhāvitaiḥ .

na hitatasahituṅśēkurabharahamaṇāniramitaṅsavayama ।।6.100.9।।


bhaganaiḥ burnt, samaparadhāvitaiḥ bestowed by, taiḥ those, bhūmau on ground, rajaḥ dust, utapapāta risen, barahamaṇā by Brahma, savayama himself, niramitama built, tata that, sahituma along with, na śēkuḥhi not able to bear

As the Taamasa missile had been built and bestowed by Brahma, the monkeys were unable to bear and by their running dust had risen.
tānayanīkānayanēkāni rāvaṇasaya śarōtatamaiḥ .

dṛṣaṭavābhaganāni śataśō rāghavaḥ parayavasathitaḥ ।।6.100.10।।


rāvaṇasaya Ravana's, śarōtatamaiḥ best of shafts, bhaganāni burnt, tāni them, anēkāni war, śataśaḥ hundreds, anīkāni several, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, rāghavaḥRaghava, parayavasathitaḥ stand firmly

Ravana's shafts had burnt many hundreds of Vanaras in war and seeing that Rama took a firm stand.
tatōrākaṣasaśāradūlōvidarāvayaharivāhinīma .

sa dadaraśatatōrāmaṅtiṣaṭhanatamaparājitama ।।6.100.11।।

lakaṣamaṇēnasahabharātarāviṣaṇunāvāsavaṅyathā .

alikhanatamivākāśamavaṣaṭabhayamahadadhanuḥ ।।6.100.12।।

padamapataraviśālākaṣaṅdīraghabāhumarinadamama .


tataḥ thereafter, rākaṣasaśāradūlaḥ tiger among Rakshasas, saḥhe, harivāhinīma monkey army, vidarāvaya routed out, tataḥ then, viṣaṇunā Vishnu, vāsavaṅyathā like Indra, bharātarābrother, lakaṣamaṇēnasaha with Lakshmana, mahata huge, dhanuḥ bow, avaṣaṭabhaya holding, tiṣaṭhanatama standing, aparājitama unconquered, ākāśama sky, alikhanatama as if scraping, padamapataraviśālākaṣama lotus petal-eyed, dīraghabāhuma long arms, arinadamama tamer of enemies, rāmama Rama, dadaraśa saw

Thereafter, the tiger among Rakshasas having routed the Vanaras from there, saw the lotus petal-eyed Rama, endowed with long arms, an unconquered one, the tamer of enemies, standing with his brother Lakshmana like Lord Vishnu with Indra, holding a huge bow that was scraping the sky.
tatōrāmōmahātējāḥsaumitarisahitōbalī ।।6.100.13।।

vānarāṅśacaraṇēbhaganānāpatanataṅ ca rāvaṇama .

samīkaṣayarāghavōhṛṣaṭōmadhayējagarāhakāramukama ।।6.100.14।।


tataḥ then, mahātējāḥ highly brilliant balī mighty, rāghavaḥ Raghava, saumitarisahitaḥ with Saumithri, rāmaḥRam a, raṇē in war, bhaganāna routed, vānarāna ca Vanaras, āpatanatama coming towards, rāvaṇama Ravana, samīkaṣaya witnessing, hṛṣaṭaḥ joyful, kāramukama bow, madhayē midst, jagarāha took hold of

Then the highly brilliant, mighty Raghava along with Saumithri, witnessing the Vanaras routed in war and Ravana coming towards him. joyful Rama took hold of his bow and held in the midst.
visaphārayitumārēbhētataḥ sa dhanurutatamama .

mahāvēgaṅmahānādaṅnirabhanadananivamēdinīma ।।6.100.15।।


tataḥ then, saḥ he, utatamama best, mahāvēgama endowed with impelling force, mahānādama huge sound, dhanuḥbow, mēdinīma earth, nirabhinadananiva as if breaking, visaphārayituma began to stretch, ārēbhē started

Then he began to stretch his best bow endowed with an impelling force, sounding as if breaking the earth.
rāvaṇasaya ca bāṇaughairāmavisaphāritēna ca .

śabadēnarākaṣasāsatēna pētuśaca śataśasatadā ।।6.100.16।।


tadā then, rāvaṇasaya Ravana's, bāṇaughaiḥ shafts, rāmavisaphāritēna stretched by Rama, tēna by that, śabadēna sound of twang, tē that, rākaṣasāḥ Rakshasas, śataśaḥ hundreds, pētuḥ ca fell

Then by Ravana's shafts and Sri Rama's stretching of the bow and sound of twang, Rakshasas fell in hundreds.
tayōḥśarapathaṅparāpayarāvaṇōrājaputarayōḥ .

sa babhau ca yathārāhuḥsamīpaśaśisūrayayōḥ ।।6.100.17।।


saḥ he, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tayōḥ that way, rājaputarayōḥ two royal princes, śarapathama arrows range, parāpaya coming closer, śaśisūrayayōḥ like Sun and moon, samīpē near, rāhuḥyathā like planet Rahu, babhau looked

That way when the two princes came near the range of Ravana's arrows, it was like the Sun and the moon near planet Rahu.
tamicachana paradhamama yōdadhuṅlakaṣamaṇōniśitaiḥśaraiḥ .

mumōcadhanurāyamayaśarānaganiśikhōpamāna ।।6.100.18।।


paradhamama first, niśitaiḥ sharp, śaraiḥ arrows, tama them, yōdadhuma to wage war, icachana desiring, lakaṣamaṇaḥ Lakshmana, dhanuḥ bow, āyamaya stretched, aganiśikhōpamāna like the peaks of fire, śarāna arrows, mumōca loosed

Lakshmana desiring to fight first stretched his bow and took out his sharp arrows which were like peaks of fire and released.
tānamukatamātarānākāśē lakaṣamaṇēna dhanuṣamatā .

bāṇāna bāṇairamahātējā rāvaṇaḥ paratayavārayata ।।6.100.19।।


mahātējāḥ effulgent, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, dhanuṣamatā excellent archer, lakaṣamaṇēna by Lakshmana, mukatamātarāna as soon as he released, tāna his, bāṇāna arrows, bāṇaiḥ arrows, ākāśē sky, paratayavārayata intercepted

As soon as the excellent archer, Lakshmana released his arrows, effulgent Ravana intercepted the arrows in the sky.
ēkamēkēnabāṇēnataribhisatarīna daśabhiradaśa .

lakaṣamaṇasaya paracicachēda daraśayana pāṇilāghavama ।।6.100.20।।


pāṇilāghavama skill of his hands, daraśayana exhibiting, lakaṣamaṇasaya Lakshmana's, ēkama one, ēkēna only, bāṇēna arrow, taribhiḥthree, tarīna three, daśabhiḥten, daśa ten, paracicachēda split

Exhibiting his skill by hand, he split the arrows of Lakshmana with only one arrow, three with three and ten with ten.
abhayatikaramayasaumitariṅrāvaṇaḥsamitiñajayaḥ .

āsasādaraṇērāmaṅsathitaṅśailamivāparama ।।6.100.21।।


samitiñajayaḥ one who won many battles, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, saumitarima Saumithri, abhayatikaramaya overlooking, raṇē in war, aparama another, śailamiva like rock, thitama standing, rāmama Rama, āsasāda went towards

Ravana, who won many battles, overlooking Lakshmana went towards Rama standing like a rock in the battle.
sa rāghavaṅsamāsādayakarōdhasaṅrakatalōcanaḥ .

vayasṛjacacharavaraṣāṇirāvaṇō rākaṣasēśavaraḥ ।।6.100.22।।


rākaṣasēśavaraḥ king of Rakshasas, saḥrāvaṇaḥ he, Ravana, rāghavama Raghava, samāsādaya coming near, karōdhasaṅrakatalōcanaḥ angry looks in the eyes, śaravaraṣāṇi rained arrows, vayasṛjata showered

Ravana the king of Rakshasas coming near Raghava with angry looks in his eyes, showered rain of arrows at Rama.
śarādhārāsatatōrāmōrāvaṇasayadhanuśacayutāḥ .

dṛṣaṭavaivāpatitāḥśīgharaṅbhalalāna jagarāhasatavarama ।।6.100.23।।


tataḥ then, rāmaḥ Rama, rāvaṇasaya Ravana's, dhanuśacayutāḥ volley of arrows, āpatitāḥ loosed, śaradhārāḥ flow of arrows, dṛṣaṭavaiva on seeing, śīgharama immediately, satavarama swiftly, bhalalāna bhallas, jagarāha seized

Then Rama immediately seized hold of bhallas and released swiftly seeing Ravana's volley of arrows flowing.
tāna śaraughāṅsatatōbhalalaisatīkaṣaṇaiśacicachēdarāghavaḥ .

dīpayamānāna mahāghōrānakarudadhānāśīviṣāniva ।।6.100.24।।


tataḥ thereafter, rāghavaḥ Raghava, dīpayamānāna glowing, mahāghōrāna terrific, karudadhāna angry, āśīviṣāniva like poisonous serpents, tāna them, śaraughāna streams of arrows, tīkaṣaṇaiḥsharp, bhalalaiḥ bhallas, cicachēda split

Thereafter, Raghava with glowing terrific arrows, which were like poisonous serpents split the sharp streams of arrows.
rāghavōrāvaṇaṅtūraṇaṅrāvaṇōrāghavaṅtathā .

anayōnayaṅvividhaisatīkaṣaṇaiḥśaravaraṣairavavaraṣatuḥ ।।6.100.25।।


rāghavaḥ Raghava, rāvaṇama at Ravana, tathā that way, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, rāghavama Raghava, tūraṇama swiftly, anayōnayama one another, tīkaṣaṇaiḥ sharp, śaravaraṣaiḥ rain of arrows, vavaraṣatuḥ showered

Thus, Raghava on Ravana and Ravana on Raghava, in that manner sharp arrows showered on one another.
cēratuśacaciraṅcitaraṅmaṇaḍalaṅsavayadakaṣiṇama .

bāṇavēgātasamutakaṣipatāvanayōnayamaparājitau ।।6.100.26।।


bāṇavēgāta by the speed of the arrows, samutakaṣipatau pushing one another, anayōnayama one another, aparājitau undefeated, savayadakaṣiṇama going round in circles, citarama wonderful, maṇaḍalama circles, cirama for long, cakaratuḥ created

Each of them pushing one another by the speed of the arrows, went round in circles and created wonderful rounds.
tayōrabhūtānivitarēsurayugapatasamaparayudhayatōḥ .

raudarayōḥsāyakamucōrayamānatakanikāśayōḥ ।।6.100.27।।


raudarayōḥ frightening forms, sāyakamucōḥ discharging arrows on one another, yamānatakanikāśayōḥ like god of death and god of retribution, tayōḥ both, yugapata at the end of universe, samaparayudhayatōḥ fighting simultaneously, bhūtāni created beings, vitarēsuḥ frightened

Just as created beings fight at the end of the dissolution of the universe, like God of death and God of retribution, both were fighting discharging arrows which was frightening to all beings.
satataṅvividhairabāṇairababhūvagaganaṅtadā .

ghanairivātapāpāyēvidayunamālāsasamākulaiḥ ।।6.100.28।।


tadā then, gaganama sky, ātapāpāyē overcast with, vidayunamālāsamākulaiḥ like flashes of lightning, ghanaiḥiva like clouds, vividhaiḥ different kinds, bāṇaiḥ arrows, satatama everywhere, babhūva seemed

Then the sky overcast with arrows of different kinds seemed like clouds with flashes of lightning.
gavākaṣitamivākāśaṅbabhūvaśaravṛṣaṭibhiḥ .

mahāvēgaisasutīkaṣaṇaigarairagṛdharapataraiḥsuvājitaiḥ ।।6.100.29।।


mahāvēgaiḥ high speed, sutīkaṣaṇāgaraiḥ with sharp heads, gṛdharapataiḥ with plumes of eagles, suvājitaiḥ of extremely pointed, śaravṛṣaṭibhiḥshowers of arrows, ākāśama the sky, gavākaṣitamiva like windows, babhūva seemed

By the speed of the arrows with sharp heads, with plumes of eagles, the shower of extremely pointed arrows covering the sky made it dark and seemed like windows in the sky.
śarānadhakāramākāśaṅcakaratuḥparathamaṅtadā .

gatē.sataṅ tapanē cāpi mahāmēghāvivōthatitau ।।6.100.30।।


tadā then, parathamama first, ākāśama the sky, śarānadhakārama darkness of the arrows, cakaratuḥcovered by, tapanē sun, asataṅgatēcāpi though had set, uthatitau even when it rose, mahāmēghāviva huge clouds

Then the sky covered with darkness of arrows was like two huge clouds rising even though the Sun had set.
tayōrabhūnamahadayudadhamanayōnayavathakāṅakaṣiṇōḥ .

anāsādayamacanitayaṅ ca vṛtaravāsavayōriva ।।6.100.31।।


anayōnayavadhakāṅakaṣiṇōḥ each one desiring to end the other, tayōḥ both, vṛtaravāsavayōriva like Vrtra and Indra, anāsādayama terrible, acanitayaṅ ca unimaginable, mahatagreat, yudadhama fight, abhūta did

Each of them desiring to end the other, fought a terrific battle like Vrtra and Indra earlier, a great fight unimaginable for others.
ubhauhiparamēṣavāsāvubhauyudadhaviśāradau .

ubhāvasataravidāṅ mukhayāvubhau yudadhēvicēratuḥ ।।6.100.32।।


ubhau both, paramēṣavāsau armed with excellent bows, ubhau both, yudadhaviśāradau highly skilled in war, ubhau both, asataravidāma adept in the use of missiles, mukhayau foremost, ubhau both, yudadhē in fighting, vicēratuḥ unmoved

Both Rama and Ravana were armed with excellent bows, both highly skilled in war, both adept in the use of missiles, both were foremost in fighting and were unmoved.
ubhauhiyēnavarajatasatēnatēnaśarōramayaḥ .

ūramayōvāyunāvidadhā jagamuḥ sāgarayōriva ।।6.100.33।।


ubhau both, yēna whichever, varajatuḥ course, tēna by that, śarōramayaḥ streams of arrows, sāgarayōḥ two oceans, vāyuvidadhāḥ stirred up by the wind, ūramayaḥiva like the waves, jagamuḥ were seen

Whichever course they took, by those streams of arrows were seen like waves in two oceans stirred up by the wind.
tataḥsaṅsakatahasatasaturāvaṇōlōkarāvaṇaḥ .

narācamālāṅrāmasayalalāṭēparatayamuñacata ।।6.100.34।।


tataḥ then, samasakatahasataḥ whose hands were engaged, lōkarāvaṇaḥ one who made the people cry, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, rāmasaya Rama's, lalāṭē forehead, nārācamālāma row of steel arrows, paratayamuñacata in turn discharged

Then Ravana, who made the people cry, whose hands were engaged in the fight, discharged a row of steel arrows into Rama's forehead.
raudaracāpaparayukatāṅtāṅnīlōtapaladalaparabhāma .

śirasādhārayadarāmō na vayathamabhayapadayata ।।6.100.35।।


raudaracāpaparayukatāma discharged from the terrific bow, nīlōtapalaparabhāma like blue lotuses, tāma them, rāmaḥRama, śirasā head, adhārayata stuck, vayathāma pain, na abhayapadayata not experienced

Rama, into whose forehead Ravana had stuck arrows, felt them like blue lotuses released from his bow, and did not experience any pain.
athamanatarānabhijapanaraudaramasatamudīrayana .

śarāna bhūyaḥsamādāya rāmaḥ karōdhasamanavitaḥ ।।6.100.36।।

mumōca ca mahātējāśacāpamāyamayavīrayavāna .


atha and then, mahātējāḥ bright, vīrayavāna valiant one, rāmaḥRama, karōdhasamanavitaḥ enraged, manatarāna mantra, abhijapana chanted, raudarama asatarama missile presided over by Rudra, udīrayana uttering, bhūyaḥ many, śarāna arrows, samādāya fixing, cāpama from bow, āyamaya stretching, mumōca ca discharged

Then valiant and bright Rama, enraged, chanting the mantras of missiles presided over by Rudra (God of destruction) taking many more arrows, stretching the bow, and fixing discharged arrows.
tēmahāmēghasaṅakāśēkavacēpatitāḥśarāḥ ।।6.100.37।।

avadhayērākaṣasēnadarasaya na vayathāṅjanayaṅsatadā .


rākaṣasēnadarasaya king of Rakshasa's, mahāmēghasaṅakāśē like large cloud, avadhayē impenetrable, kavacē shield, patitāḥ fallen, tēśarāḥ those arrows, tadā then, vayathāma pain, na janayana not felt

Fallen on the impenetrable shield of Ravana, those arrows did not inflict any pain.
punarēvādhataṅrāmōrathasathaṅrākaṣasādhipama ।।6.100.38।।

lalāṭēparamāsataraṇasaravāsatarakuśalō.bhinata .


atha and then, saravāsatarakuśalaḥ who was skilled in the use of all weapons, rāmaḥ Rama, rathasathama from the chariot, taṅrākaṣasādhipama that Rakshasa king, punarēva again, paramāsataraṇaexcellent, lalāṭē on the forehead, abhinata pierced

Again Rama, who was skilled in the use of all weapons, pierced that king of Rakshasas seated in the chariot with an excellent missile on the forehead.
tēbhitatavābāṇarūpāṇipañacaśīraṣāivōragāḥ ।।6.100.39।।

śavasanatōviviśurabhūmiṅrāvaṇaparatikūlitāḥ .


tē they, pañacaśīraṣāḥ five headed, uragāḥiva like serpents, bāṇarūpāṇi in the form of shafts, bhitatavā penetrated, rāvaṇaparatikūlitāḥ when repelled by Ravana, śavasanataḥ hissing, bhūmima earth, viviśuḥ entered

The five headed serpent like arrows released by Rama penetrated and having been repelled by Ravana they entered the earth hissing.
nihatayarāghavasayāsataraṅrāvaṇaḥkarōdhamūrachitaḥ ।।6.100.40।।

asuraṅsumahāghōramanayadasataraṅ cakārasaḥ .


saḥrāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, rāghavasaya Raghava's, asatarama missile, nihataya void, karōdhamūrachitaḥ deluded with anger, sumahāghōrama very dreadful, anayata other, asurama presided over by demon, asatarama missile, cakāra released

Making Rama's missile void, Ravana manifested another missile presided over by demon and released.
siṅhavayāgharamukhāṅśacāpikaṅakakākamukhānapi ।।6.100.41।।

gṛdharaśayēnamukhāṅśacāpiśṛgāvavadanāṅsatathā .

īhāmṛgamukhāṅśacāpivayāditāsayāna bhayāvahāna ।।6.100.42।।

pañacāsayāna lēlihānāṅśacasasarajaniśitāna śarāna .


siṅhavayāgharamukhāna ca api lion and tiger faces, kaṅakakākamukhānapi buzzards and red geese faces, gṛdharaśayēnamukhāṅśacāpi eagles and falcons faced, tathā in the same way, śṛgālavadanāna jackals and wolves faces, īhāmṛgamukhāṅśacāpi terrible with mouths wide open, vayāditāsayāna to hurt, bhayāvahāna fearful, pañacāsayāna five headed, lēlihānāṅśaca serpents, niśitānasharp, śarāna arrows, sasaraja released

Arrows having lion and tiger face, buzzards and red geese face, eagles and falcons faced, in the same way arrows with jackals' face, wolves' face, terrible with mouth wide open five headed serpent like fearful sharp arrows were released by Ravana.
śarāna kharamukhāṅśacānayānavarāhamukhasaṅśaritāna ।।6.100.43।।

śavānakukakuṭavakatarāṅśacamakarāśīviṣānanāna .

ētāṅśacānayāṅśacamāyāvīsasarajaniśitāna śarāna ।।6.100.44।।

rāmaṅparatimahātējāḥkarudadhasasarapaivaśavasana .

Deceitful and energetic Ravana provoked by anger, let loose more arrows of boar faced, dog faced, cocks faced, and alligators and serpents faced hissing like serpents and other such arrows against Rama.
