[Ravana reproaches the charioteer. After satisfying his master the charioteer drives Ravana to the battlefield.]

satumōhātasusaṅakarudadhaḥkṛtānatabalacōditaḥ .

karōdhasaṅrakatanayanōrāvaṇaṅsūtamabaravīta ।।6.106.1।।


mōhāta deluded, susaṅakarudadhaḥ enraged, kṛtānatabalacōditaḥ by force of destiny, saḥrāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, karōdhasaṅrakatanayanaḥ eyes turned red in anger, sūtama charioteer, abaravīta spoke

Enraged out of delusion, by force of destiny, Ravana's eyes turned red in anger and spoke to his charioteer.
hīnavīrayamivāśakataṅpauruṣēṇavivarajitama .

bhīruṅlaghumivāsatatavaṅvihīnamivatējasā ।।6.106.2।।

vimukatamivamāyābhirasatarairivabahiṣakṛtama .

māmavajañāyadurabudadhēsavayābudadhayāvicēṣaṭasē ।।6.106.3।।


durabudadhē dull fellow, aśakatama not capable, pauruṣēya in manliness, vivarajitama powerless, hīnavīrayamiva deficient in valour, bhīruma timid, asatatavama incapable, laghumiva petty, tējasā energy, vihīnamiva devoid of, māyābhiḥ not know conjuring tricks, vimumiva abandoned like, asatarai: weapons, bahiṣakṛtama iva like driven out, māma me, avajañāya not knowing, savayā your own way, budadhayā discretion, vicēṣaṭasē foolishly

"You dullard! Disdaining me as not capable, lacking manliness, powerless, deficient in valour, timid, incapable, petty, devoid of energy, not knowing conjuring tricks, abandoned weapons, driven out, you act not knowing me in your own way foolishly using your discretion."
kimarathaṅmāmavajañāyamacachanadamanavēkaṣaya ca .

tavayāśatarusamakaṣaṅmērathō.yamapavāhitaḥ ।।6.106.4।।


śatarusamakaṣaṅ enemy presence, mē my avajañāya, not knowing, macachanadama my opinion, anavēkaṣaya ca belittling, ayama I, mērathaḥ my chariot, kimarathama for What reason, apavāhitaḥ removed by you

Not knowing my opinion, for what reason have you removed my chariot in the presence of my enemy, belittling me?
tavayādayahimamānāraya cirakālasamārajitama .

yaśōvīrayaṅ ca tējaśacaparatayayaśacavināśitaḥ ।।6.106.5।।


anāraya evil minded, adaya today, tavayā by you, mama me, cirakālasamārajitama earned over a long period, yaśaḥ fame, vīrayama valiance, tējaśaca glory, paratayayaśaca bravery, vinaśatarōḥ has been wiped out

"O evil minded one! My fame, glory, valiance and bravery earned over a long period has been wiped out by you."
parakhayātavīrayasayarañajanīyasayavikaramaiḥ .

paśayatōyudadhalubadhō.haṅkṛtaṅkāpuruṣasatavayā ।।6.106.6।।


parakhayātavīrayasaya valour is known widely, vikaramaiḥ bravery, rañajanīyasaya one who is to be praised, śatarōḥ adversary, paśayataḥ as I was looking, tavayā by you, yudadhalubadaḥ lover of war, ahama I, kāpuruṣaḥ timid, kṛtaḥ did

"While my adversary's valour is widely known, you brought me back like a timid one, while I love war, while I am to be praised in the presence of my enemy."
yasatavaṅrathamidaṅmōhānanacēdavahasiduramatē .

satayō.paratitarakōmēparēṇatavamupasakṛtaḥ ।।6.106.7।।


duramatē evil minded, yaḥtavama you are, idaṅrathama this chariot, mōhāta out of delusion, na vahasicēta not willing to drive, ayama I, paratitarakaḥ perversion, satayaḥtruly, tavama you, parēṇa by the enemy, upasakṛtaḥare influenced

"O Evil minded one! If out of delusion you are not willing to drive, truly you are influenced by the enemy."
na hitadavidayatēkaramasuhṛdōhitakāṅakaṣiṇaḥ .

ripūṇāṅsadṛśaṅtavētadayatatatavayaitadanuṣaṭhitama ।।6.106.8।।


tavayā by you, yata that which, ētata all this, anuṣaṭhitama followed, ētata this, ripūṇāma enemy's, sadṛśama not befitting, tata that, hitakāṅakaṣiṇaḥ desiring benefit, suhṛdaḥ with good heart, karama action, na vidayatēhi do not know

What has been done by you is not befitting, this is What an enemy should have done. Being good at heart you have done What is good for enemy.
nivaratayarathaṅśīgharaṅyāvananāpaitimēripuḥ .

yadivādhayuṣitō.sitavaṅsamarayatēyadimēguṇaḥ ।।6.106.9।।


tavama your, adhayuṣitaḥ lived with me for long, asiyadi if you, mē my, guṇaḥ virtues, yadisamarayatē if you remember, mēripuḥ my enemy, yāvata all that, nāpaiti by the way, śīgharama quickly, rathama chariot, nivarataya take back

"If you remember that you lived long with me and know my virtues, quickly turn back the chariot before my adversary with draws.
ēvaṅpuruṣamukatasatuhitabudadhibudadhinā .

abaravīdarāvaṇaṅsūtōhitaṅsānunayaṅvacaḥ ।।6.106.10।।


abudadhinā insensitive, ēvama in that way, paruṣama harsh, ukataḥ spoken, hitabudadhi: beneficial advice, sūtaḥ charioteer, rāvaṇama to Ravana, sānunayama friendly, vacaḥ words, abaravīta spoke

When the insensitive Ravana spoke harshly in that manner, to the charioteer who was wishing his benefit, he spoke in friendly language to Ravana.
na bhītō.sami na mūḍhō.saminōpajapatō.samiśatarubhiḥ .

na paramatatō na niḥsanēhōvisamṛtā na ca satakariyā ।।6.106.11।।


bhītaḥ fearing, nāsami me not, mūḍhaḥ foolish, na asami am not, śatarubhiḥ enemy also, upajapataḥ won by them, na asami not me, paramatataḥ negligent, na not, niḥsanēhaḥ friendliness, na not, satakariyā ca good deeds also, na not

"I was not fearing, nor foolish, not won by the enemy, not negligent also, not lacking friendliness and not forgetting good deeds done by you."
mayātuhitakāmēvayaśaśacaparirakaṣatā .

sanēhaparasananamanasāhitamitayapariyaṅkṛtama ।।6.106.12।।


hitakāmēna wishing your welfare, yaśaśaca fame, parirakaṣatā to protect, sanēhaparasananamanasā with friendly and pleasant feeling, mayā by me, hitama iti that which is good for you, apariyama unpleasant, kṛtama action

Wishing your welfare, for your fame and to protect you with a friendly and pleasant feeling I did that which is good for you. You are unpleasant about this action.
nāsaminanarathēmahārāja tavaṅmāṅpariyahitēratama .

kaśacilalaghurivānārayōdōṣatōganatumarahasi ।।6.106.13।।


mahārāja O king, pariyahitē with good intention, ratama remain, māma me, asamina I, arathē solicit, tavama you, kaśacita indeed, laghuḥ petty, anārayaḥiva like an unworthy, dōṣataḥ by mistake, ganatuma I wish you, na arahasi ought not

"O King! I who wish your welfare ought not to be blamed like an unworthy and petty-minded person by mistake."
śarūyatāṅparatidāsayāmiyananimitataṅmayārathaḥ .

nadīvēgaivāmaṅbhōbhēsaṅyugēvinivaratitaḥ ।।6.106.14।।


ivāmaṅbhōbhē into ocean like, nadīvēgaḥiva like speeding river, saṅyugē in war, rathaḥ chariot, yananimitatama for that reason, vinivaratitaḥ taken back, paratidāsayāmi will answer you, śarūyatāma please listen

"O yes! I will answer you. Please listen. like the river entering the ocean speedily is diverted, I have taken back the chariot from the battle.
śaramaṅtavāvagacachāmimahatāraṇakaramaṇā .

na hitēvīrayasaumukhayaṅparakaraṣaṅvōpadhārayē ।।6.106.15।।


mahatā great, raṇakaramaṇā in the task of battle, tava your, śaramama strenuous work, avagacachāmi took cognizance of, tē your, vīrayasaumukhayama valiance, parakaraṣaṅvā or superiority, nōpadhārayē no exhibition

"Great Ravana! After the strenuous task in the battle, there was no exhibition of your valour, and I did not cognize any superiority in your action."
rathōdavahanakhinanāśacabhaganāmērathavājinaḥ .

dīnāgharamapariśarānatāgāvōvaraṣahatāiva ।।6.106.16।।


mē my, rathavājinaḥ chariot horses, rathōdavahanakhinanāḥ exhausted by dragging, bhaganāḥ broken, varaṣahatāḥ lashed by rain, gāvaḥiva like cows, gharamapariśarānatāḥ worn out with the heat of the sun, dīnāḥ desperate

"The horses of my chariot were exhausted by dragging, broken down, worn out by the hot sun, and desperate like cows lashed by rain."
nimitatāni ca bhūyiṣaṭhaṅyāniparādurabhavanatinaḥ .

tēṣutēṣavabhipananēṣulakaṣayāmayaparadakaṣiṇama ।।6.106.17।।


naḥ not, yāni those, nimitatāni portents, bhūyiṣaṭhama many, parādurabhavanati manifesting, abhipananēṣu seeing, tēṣutēṣu again and again, aparadakaṣiṇama in the reverse direction, lakaṣayāmi observable

"Those portents manifesting again and again, that I am seeing, all of them are in the reverse direction (meaning not proptitious)."
dēśakālau ca vijañēyaulakaṣaṇānīṅagitāni ca .

dainayaṅharaṣaśacakhēdaśacarathinaśacabalābalama ।।6.106.18।।


balābalama strength and weakness, dēśakālau ca in time and place, vijañēyau good and evil, lakaṣaṇāni signs, iṅagitāni ca omens, rathinaḥ warrior's, dainayama depression, haraṣaśaca liveliness, khēdaśaca sorrow also

"Propitious and unpropitious, time and place, good and evil signs and omens, depression and liveliness of the warrior as well as strength and weakness of the one in the chariot must be ascertained."
sathalanimanānibhūmēśacasamāniviṣamāṇi ca .

yudadhakālaśacavijañēyaḥparasayānataradaraśanama ।।6.106.19।।


bhūmēḥ, earth's sathalanimanāni ups and downs, samāni stable, viṣamāṇi ca difficult locations, yudadhakālaśaca right time of war, vijañēyaḥ should be known, parasaya of the enemy, anataradaraśanama inner weakness

"The earths' ups and downs, evenness and ruggedness, difficult locations, the right time and place for war should be known in advance and the inner weakness of the enemy also to be known."
upayānāpayānē ca sathānaṅparatayapasarapaṇama .

saravamētadarathasathēnajañēyaṅrathakuṭumabhinā ।।6.106.20।।


rathasathēna by the charioteer, rathakuṭumabhinā to hold or advance, upayānāpayānē ca coming near or retreating, sathānama in seated, paratayapasarapaṇama to return back, ētata all this, saravama everything, jañēyama to be known

"To hold the chariot or advance, to go near the (enemy) or retreat, to return back or advance, everything should be known to the charioteer."
tavaviśarāmahētōsatutathaiṣāṅrathavājināma .

raudaraṅvarajayatākhēdaṅkaṣamaṅkṛtamidaṅmayā ।।6.106.21।।


tava your, viśarāmahētōḥ reason is to give rest, tathā in that way, ēṣāma all these, rathavājināma horses of the chariot, raudarama terrific feat, khēdama fatigue, varajayatā to relieve, mayā by me, idama in this way, kaṣamama deserve to be excused, kṛtama for the action

"The reason for retreating in this way is to give you rest and relieve the horses from the terrible feat and fatigue. I deserve to be excused for this action."
savēcachayāna mayāvīrarathō.yamapavāhitaḥ .

bharatṛsanēhaparītēnamayēdaṅyatakṛtaṅparabhō ।।6.106.22।।


vīra heroic, parabhō Lord, ayama I, rathaḥ chariot, mayā by me, savēcachayā independently, na apavāhitaḥ not brought back, mayā by me, yata that, kṛtama action, idama thus, bharatṛsanēhaparītēna with affection to the master

"Heroic Lord! I have not brought back this chariot independently (without thinking). I have acted in friendliness to the master (to give rest) not otherwise."
ājañāpayayathātatatavaṅvakaṣayasayariniṣūdana .

tatakariṣayāmayahaṅvīragatānṛṇayēnacētasā ।।6.106.23।।


ariṣūdana, tamer of enemies vīra warrior, ājañāpaya orders, tavama your, tata like that, yathā so also, vakaṣayasi order, tata that, ahama I, gatānṛṇayēna in accordance with, cētasā wholeheartedly, kariṣayāmi will carry out

"O Tamer of enemies! Order now and in that way, I shall carry out your order in accordance with you wholeheartedly."
sanatuṣaṭasatēnavākayēnarāvaṇasatasayasārathēḥ .

paraśasayainaṅbahuvidhaṅyudadhalubadhō.baravīdidama ।।6.106.24।।


tasayasārathēḥ by that charioteer, tēnavākayēna by those words, sanatuṣaṭaḥ fully satisfied, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, ēnama in that way, bahuvidhama many ways, paraśasaya praised, yudadhalubadaḥ desiring to wage war, idama thus, abaravīta spoke

Ravana was fully satisfied with the words of the charioteer. He praised the charioteer in many ways and spoke like this desiring to wage war.
rathaṅśīgharamidaṅsūtarāghavābhimukhaṅnaya .

nāhatavāsamarēśatarūnanivaratiṣayatirāvaṇaḥ ।।6.106.25।।


sūta charioteer imama this, rathama chariot, śīgharama quickly, rāghavābhimukhama towards Raghava, naya as a policy, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, samarē in battle, śatarūna enemy, ahatavā without putting an end, na nivaratiṣayati never returns back

"Quickly drive the chariot towards Raghava. As a policy, Ravana would never turn back on the battlefield without putting an end to the enemy."
ēvamukatavātatasatuṣaṭōrāvaṇōrākaṣasēśavaraḥ .

dadautasayaśubhaṅhayēkaṅhasatābharaṇamutatamama ।।6.106.26।।

śarutavārāvaṇavākayānisārathisasanayavaratata .


tuṣaṭaḥrākaṣasēśavaraḥ fully satisfied, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, ēvama in that way, ukatavā having spoken, tataḥ then, tasaya his, śubhama auspicious, ēkama one, utatamama excellent, hasatābharaṇama ornament of the hand dadau presented, saḥsārathiḥ to the charioteer, rāvaṇavākayāni Ravana's words, śarutavā hearing, nayavaratata turned

Fully satisfied with Charioteer's words, Ravana bestowed him with an excellent auspicious ornament of the hand. On hearing Ravana's words, the charioteer advanced the chariot.
tatōdarutaṅrāvaṇavākayacōditaḥparacōdayāmāsahayānasasārathiḥ .

sa rākaṣasēnadarasaya tatō mahārathaḥkaṣaṇēnarāmasayarathāgaratō.bhavata ।।6.106.27।।


tataḥ then, rāvaṇavākayacōditaḥ instructed by Ravana, saḥsārathiḥ that Charioteer, hayāna horses, paracōdayāmāsa started to drive, rākaṣasēnadarasaya Rakshasa Lord's, saḥ he, mahārathaḥ great chariot, kaṣaṇēna in seconds, rāmasaya Rama's, rathāgarataḥ before chariot, abhavata stood

Then,instructed by Ravana,his charioteer started to drive Rakshasa lord's chariot.In a moment,the great chariot stood before Rama's chariot.
।। itayāraṣēvālamīkīyēśarīmadarāmāyaṇēādikāvayēyudadhakāṇaḍēṣaḍutataraśatatamasasaragaḥ ।।
This is the end of one hundred and sixth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic, the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
