Sloka & Translation

[Ravana enters the royal assembly followed by Vibheeshana, Prahastha and others and holds consultations with his ministers.]

sababhūvakṛśōrājāmaithilīkāmamōhitaḥ .

asanmānāccasuhṛdāṅpāpaṅpāpēnakarmaṇā ।।6.11.1।।


maithilīkāmamōhitaḥ infatuated with passion towards Mythili, saḥ that, pāpaṅ: sinner, rājā: king, suhṛdām those who were dear to him, asanmānācca: disregarded, pāpēna: on account of sinful, karmaṇā: actions, kṛśaḥ weak, babhūva: became.

Infatuated with passion towards Mythili, disregarded by his dear ones on account of sinful actions, sinner Ravana became weak.
atītasamayēkālētasminvaiyudhirāvaṇaḥ .

amātyaiścasuhṛdbhiścaprāptakālamamanyata ।।6.11.2।।


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tasmin on account of, atītasamayē: elapsed, kālē: time, amātyaiśca: with ministers, suhṛdbhiśca: with his friends, yudhi: about war, prāptakālam right time, amanyata: considered for consultation.

Because of the lapse of time, Ravana considered it imminent to consult with his ministers and friends about war.
sahēmajālavitataṅmaṇividrumabhūṣitam .

upagamyavinītāśvamārurōhamahāratham ।।6.11.3।।


saḥ he (Ravana), hēmajālavitatam overlaid with golden latticework, maṇividrumabhūṣitam decked with gems and corals, vinītāśvam trained horses,mahāratham magnificent chariot, upagamya: having reached, ārurōha: ascended.

Ravana, having reached, ascended the magnificent chariot that was overlaid with golden latticework, decked with gems and corals, and yoked to trained horses.
tamāsthāyarathaśrēṣṭhaṅmahāmēghasamasvanam .

prayayaurakṣasāṅśrēṣṭhōdaśagrīvassabhāṅprati ।।6.11.4।।


rakṣasām of Rakshasas, śrēṣṭhaḥ eminent, daśagrīvaḥ ten-headed Ravana, mahāmēghasamasvanam making sound like the roaring noise of a huge cloud, tam him, rathaśrēṣṭham best chariot, āsthāya: climbed up, sabhāṅprati: to assembly, prayayau: went.

The ten-headed Ravana, eminent one among Rakshasas climbed up that best of chariots that was making noise like the roaring sound of a huge cloud and went to assembly.
asicarmadharāyōdhāssarvāyudhadharāstataḥ .

rākṣasārākṣasēndrasyapurastātsampratasthirē ।।6.11.5।।


tataḥ then, asicarmadharāḥ wielding swords and all kinds of weapons, yōdhāḥ soldiers, sarvāyudhadharāḥ different kinds of weapons, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, rākṣasēndrasya: Lord of Rakshasas, purastāt in front, sampratasthirē: stood at that time.

Then soldiers wielding swords and different kinds of weapons stood in front of the Lord of Rakshasas.
nānāvikṛtavēṣāścanānābhūṣaṇabhūṣitāḥ .

pārśvataspṛṣṭhataścainaṅparivāryayayustata:।। 6.11.6।।


nānāvikṛtavēṣāśca: adorned in different kinds of uncouth attire, nānābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ wearing different kinds of ornaments, tata: thereafter, ēnam by his, pārśvataḥ sides, paṣṭhataścaiva: and also back, parivārya: surrounding, yayuḥ went.

Further (Rakshasas) adorned in different kinds of uncouth attire, wearing different kinds of ornaments went by his side and also at the back.
rathaiścātirathāśśīghraṅmattaiścavaravāraṇaiḥ .

anūtpēturdaśagrīvamākrīḍadbhiścavājibhiḥ ।।6.11.7।।


atirathāḥ great charioteers, rathaiḥ chariots, mattai: proud elephants, varavāraṇaiḥ excellent, ākrīḍadbhiḥ sporting, vājibhiśca: and horses also, daśagrīvam ten-headed Ravana, śīghram swiftly, anūtpētuḥ followed.

(Some Rakshasa) Charioteers riding on chariots, some on proud elephants and some on horses sporting away followed the ten-headed Ravana.
gadāparighahastāścaśaktitōmarapāṇayaḥ .

paraśvathadharāścānyētathā.nyēśūlapāṇayaḥ ।।6.11.8।।


gadāparighahastāśca: maces and iron bars in their hands, śaktitōmarapāṇayaḥ holding strong iron clubs in hand, paraśvathadharāḥ holding battle axes, anyē: others śūlapāṇayaḥ with tridents in their hands, anyēca: and other.

Some holding maces and iron bars, some holding strong iron clubs in hand, and some others holding battle axes, tridents and other weapons went.
tatastūryasahasrāṇāṅsañjajñēnissvanōmahān .

tumulaśśaṅkhaśabdaścasabhāṅgacchatirāvaṇē ।।6.11.9।।


tataḥ then, rāvaṇē: as Ravana, sabhām to the assembly, gacchati: as he entered, tūryasahasrāṇām thousands of band instruments, mahān high, nissvanaḥ sounded, tumulaḥ tumultuous noise, śaṅkhaśabdaśca: sounds of conchs, sañjajñē: broke forth.

Then as Ravana entered the assembly thousands of band instruments sounded aloud. Conchs broke forth producing tumultuous noise.
sanēmighōṣēṇamahānsahasā.bhininādayan .

rājamārgaṅśriyājuṣṭaṅpratipēdēmahārathaḥ ।।6.11.10।।


mahān great, saḥ he, mahārathaḥ great chariot, nēmighōṣēṇa: rattling sound of chariot, abhininādayan echoed in all directions, śriyā: bright, juṣṭam pleasing, rājamārgam royal path, sahasā: all at once, pratipēdē: entered.

As the rattling sounds of the great chariot echoed in all directions, he entered the bright pleasing royal path all at once.
vimalaṅcātapatrāṇāṅpragṛhītamaśōbhata .

pāṇḍuraṅrākṣasēndrasyapūrṇastārādhipōyathā ।।6.11.11।।


rākṣasēndrasya: Lord of Rakshasa's, vimalam pure, pāṇḍuram white canopy, pragṛhītam taking hold, ātapatrāṇām spread like lines, pūrṇaḥ full, tārāthipō: like the Lord of stars (moon), yathā: like that, aśōbhata: was shining.

The pure white canopy of Ravana held by the Rakshasas spread like lines shone like the Lord of stars (the full moon).
hēmamañjarigarbhēcaśuddhasphaṭikavigrahē .

cāmaravyajanētasyarējatussavyadakṣiṇē ।।6.11.12।।


hēmamañjarigarbhē: with golden bouquet in the middle, śuddhasphaṭikavigrahē: pure crystal like handles, cāmaravyajanē: a pair of fans, tasya: its, savyadakṣiṇē: on left and right side, rējatuḥ glowed.

A pair of fans with pure crystal like handles with a golden bouquet in the middle glowed.
tēkṛtāñjalayassarvērathasthaṅpṛthivīsthitāḥ .

rākṣasārākṣasaśrēṣṭhaṅśirōbhistaṅvavandirē ।।6.11.13।।


pṛthivīsthitāḥ standing on the ground, sarvē: all, satērākṣasāḥ those Rakshasas, kṛtāñjalayaḥ with folded palms, rathastham seated in the chariot, rākṣasaśrēṣṭham foremost of Rakshasas, tam him, śirōbhistaṅ: bowing their heads, vavandirē: offered salutations.

Standing on the ground, all the Rakshasas bowing their heads down and with folded palms offered their salutations to the foremost of the Rakshasas seated in the chariot.
rākṣasaistsūyamānassañjayāśīrbhirarindamaḥ .

āsasādamahātējāssabhāṅviracitāṅtadā ।।6.11.14।।


tadā: then, arindamaḥ conqueror of foes, mahātējāḥ exceptionally splendid, rākṣasaiḥ by Rakshasas, jayāśīrbhi: victory to you, prosperity to you', stūyamānaḥ having praised, viracitām well built, sabhām royal court, āsasāda: reached.

Then as the conqueror of foes, an exceptionally splendid one, Ravana was praised by the Rakshasas saying, "Victory to you, Prosperity to you", Ravana entered the well-built royal court.
suvarṇarajatāstīrṇāṅviśuddhasphaṭikāntarām .

virājamānōvapuṣārukmapaṭṭōttaracchadām ।।6.11.15।।

tāṅpiśācaśatai: ṣaṅbhirabhiguptāṅsadāprabhām .

pravivēśamahātējāssukṛtāṅviśvakarmaṇā ।।6.11.16।।


vapuṣā: whose body was embodied with, virājamānaḥ glowing, mahātējā: exceptionally splendid, suvarṇarajatāstīrṇām pillars made of gold and silver, viśuddhasphaṭikāntarām inside of which is pure like crystal, rukmapaṭṭōttaracchadām carpeted with shining bright golden silk, ṣaḍibhaḥ six, piśācaśataiḥ hundred devils, abhigustām very beautiful, sadāprabhām ever shining, viśvakarmaṇā: by Vishwakarma, sukṛtām well-constructed, tām that, pravivēśa: entered.

Exceptionally splendid one, (Ravana) embodied with glowing body entered the royal court constructed by Vishwakarma, with pillars of gold and silver. Inside of the court was pure like crystal and carpeted with shining golden silk. It was very beautiful and ever shining and guarded by six hundred devils.
tasyāṅsavaiḍūryamayaṅpriyakājinasamvṛtam .

mahatsōpāśrayaṅbhējērāvaṇaḥparamāsanam ।।6.11.17।।


saḥ he, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tasyām his, vaiḍūryamayam encrusted with Vaidurya gems,priyakājinasamvṛtam covered with deer skin, sōpāśrayam which had a pillow, mahat huge, paramāsanam excellent seat, bhējē: sat.

Ravana sat on a huge excellent seat encrusted with Vydurya gems and covered with deer skin and which had a pillow.
tata: śaśāsēśvaravaddūtānlaghuparākramān .

samānayatamēkṣipramihaitānrākṣasāniti ।।

kṛtyamastimahajjānēkartavyamitiśatrubhiḥ ।।6.11.18।।


tataḥ then, laghuparākramān quick footed, dūtān messengers, īśvaravat like Lord, mahat great, kṛtyām task, asti: for us, śatrubhiḥ against enemies, kartavyam iti: this has to be performed, jānē: you may know, ētān that way, rākṣasān Rakshasas, kṣipram at once, mē: to me, iha: here, samānayata: with you, iti: thus, śaśāsa: commanded.

Then that Lord like Ravana said "We have to do a great task against the enemies now. It has to be performed." He commanded quick footed messengers to get the Rakshasas to him at once.
rākṣasāstadvacaśśrutvālaṅkāyāṅparicakramuḥ ।।6.11.19।।

anugēhamavasthāyavihāraśayanēṣuca .

udyānēṣucarakṣāṅsicōdayantōhyabhītavat ।।6.11.20।।


rākṣasāḥ those Rakshasas, tadvacaḥ that which was spoken, śrutvā: having heard, vihāraśayanēṣu: places of recreation and bedrooms, udyānēṣuca: also into recreational gardens, avasthāya: residing, rakṣāṅsi: Rakshasas, cōdayantaḥ directing, abhītavat without fear, laṅkāyām in Lanka, anugēham every house, paricakramuḥ went round.

Those Rakshasas having heard the words spoken by Ravana went to places of recreation, bedrooms and gardens and went round without fear into every house directing the Rakshasas.
tērathān rucirānēkēdṛptānēkēpṛthagghayān .

nāgānēkē.dhiruruhurjagmuścaikēpadātayaḥ ।।6.11.21।।


tē: of these, ēkē: some, rucirān on exquisite, rathān chariots, ēkē: some, dṛptān proud, dṛḍhān sturdy, hayān on horses, ēkē: some, nāgān elephants, adhiruruhuḥ ascended, ēkē: some, padātayaḥ on foot.

Of those (Rakshasas) some went on exquisite chariots, some on proud sturdy horses some ascended elephants and some by foot.
sāpurīparamākīrṇārathakuñjaravājibhiḥ .

sampatadbhirvirurucēgarutmadbhirivāmbaram ।।6.11.22।।


sampatadbhiḥ that prosperous capital, rathakuñjaravājibhiḥ chariots elephants and horses, paramākīrṇā: in groups, sāpurī: that capital, garutmadbhiḥ filled with birds, ambaramiva: like the sky, virurucē: was shining.

With chariots, elephants and horses advancing in groups the prosperous capital was shining resembling the flocks of birds in the sky.
tēvāhanāvyavasthāpyayānānivividhānica .

sabhāṅpadbhiḥpraviviśussiṅhāgiriguhāmiva ।।6.11.23।।


tē: those, vāhanāni: vehicles, vividhāni: of several kinds, yānānica: at the entrance and, avasthāpya: parking, siṅhāḥ lions, giriguhāmiva: like a cave of a mountain, sabhām royal court, padbhiḥ on foot, praviviśuḥ entered.

Parking those vehicles of several kinds at the entrance they entered the royal court by foot like the lions entering the cave of a mountain.
rājñaḥpādaugṛhītvāturājñātēpratipūjitāḥ .

pīṭhēṣvanyēbṛsīṣvanyēbhūmaukēcidupāviśan ।।6.11.24।।


tē: they rājñaḥ king's, pādau: feet, gṛhītvā: clasping, rājñā: to king, pratipūjitāḥ offering salutations, anyēya: some, pīṭhēṣu: on golden seats, anyē: some, bṛsīṣu: on kusa grass mats, kēcit while some, bhūmau: on the floor, upāviśan took seat.

They held the feet of the king and on offering salutations to the king took their seat. While some took golden seats, some sat on a kusa grass mat, and some took a se at on the floor.
tēsamētyasabhāyāṅvairākṣasārājaśāsanāt .

yathārhamupatasthustērāvaṇaṅrākṣasādhipam ।।6.11.25।।


tērākṣasāḥ those Rakshasas, rājaśāsanāt by the king's command, sabhāyām in the royal court, samētya: settled in appropriate seats, tē: they, rākṣasādhipam leaders of Rakshasas, rāvaṇam at Ravana, yathārham close by, upatasthuḥ sat.

Those Rakshasas (who arrived) at the royal court settled down in appropriate seats on the king's command. The leaders of Rakshasas s at close by Ravana.
mantriṇaścayathāmukhyāniścayārthēṣupaṇḍitāḥ .

amātyāścaguṇōpētāssarvajñābuddhidarśanāḥ ।।6.11.26।।

samīyustatraśataśaśūrāścabahavastadā .

sabhāyāṅhēmavarṇāyāṅsarvārthasyasukhāyavai ।।6.11.27।।


niścayārthē: in deciding matters, paṇḍitāḥ learned, mantriṇaśca: and also ministers, guṇōpētāḥ virtuous, sarvajñāḥ knowledgeable, buddhidarśanāḥ who can visualise things with their intellect, amātyāśca: army men, tathā: likewise, śataśaḥ in hundreds, bahavaḥ many, śūrāḥ heroes, tatra: there, hēmavarṇāyām shining with golden colour, sabhāyām in the royal assembly, sarvārthasya: to deliberate on all matters, sukhāyavai: for a happy conclusion, yathāmukhyāḥ important people, samīyuḥ collected.

Those who were learned in decision making, ministers, virtuous and knowledgeable ones, those who can visualise things with their intellect, army men, like wise many heroes and important people collected at the royal assembly shining in golden colour to deliberate on matters for a happy conclusion.
tatōmahātmāvipulaṅsuyugyaṅrathamvaraṅhēmavicitritāṅgam .

śubhaṅsamāsthāyayayauyaśasvīvibhīṣaṇassaṅsadamagrajasya ।।6.11.28।।


tataḥ thereafter, mahātmā: great, yaśasvī: illustrious, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, vipulam broad, suyugyaṅ: yoked with good horses, hēmavicitritāṅgam decked with gold, śubham auspicious, varam choicest, ratham chariot, āsthāya: having ascended, agrajasya: of the elder brother, saṅsadam assembly, yayau: went.

Thereafter illustrious and great Vibheeshana having ascended auspicious and choicest chariot decked with gold and yoked to good horses went to the assembly of his elder brother.
sapūrvajāyāvarajaśśaśaṅsanāmāthapaścāścaraṇauvavandē .

śukaḥprahastaścatathaivatēbhyōdadauyathārhaṅpṛthagāsanāni ।।6.11.29।।


atha: and then, saḥ that Vibheeshana, avarajaḥ younger brother, pūrvajāya: elder brother's, nāma: name, śśaśaṅsa: repeated, paścāt after that, caraṇau: to the feet, vavandē: offered salutations, śukaḥ Suka, prahastaśca: Prahastha also, tathaiva: likewise, tēbhyaḥ both, yathārham in accordance with their position, asanāni: seats, pṛthak different, dadau: offered.

There after Vibheeshana the younger brother, repeated his name (by way of courtesy ). A fter that he offered salutations to his elder brother's feet. B oth Sukha and Prahastha likewise followed Vibheeshana and took their seats offered according to their position.
suvarṇanānāmaṇibhūṣaṇānāṅsuvāsasāṅsaṅsadirākṣasānām .

tēṣāṅparārghyāgurucandanānāṅsrajāścagandhāḥpravavussamantāt ।।6.11.30।।


saṅsadi: in that court, suvarṇanānāmaṇibhūṣaṇānām decorated with different kinds of golden and gem colours, suvāsasām beautiful clothes, rākṣasānām Rakshasa's, parārghyāgurucandanānām best of fragrances like incense and sandal paste, srajāśca: floral garlands, gandhā: fragrance of sandal, samantāt everywhere, pravavuḥ spread all round.

In that royal court decorated with different kinds of golden and gem colours, the Rakshasas attired in beautiful clothes with their body smeared with fragrance of incense and sandal paste and wearing floral garland s whose fragrance had spread all over.
nacukruśurnānṛtamāhakaścitsabhāpadōnāpijajalpuruccaiḥ .

saṅsiddhārthāssarvaēvōgravīryābhartussarvēdadṛśuścānanaṅtē ।।6.11.31।।


sabhāsadaḥ those who assembled, nacukruśuḥ not make noise, kaścit even a little,anṛtam untruth, nāha: not, uccaiḥ uttered, najajalpuḥ not speak, apisarvēsaṅsiddhārdhā: and all were fully accomplished, ugravīryāḥ very heroic, tēsarvē: all of them, bhartuḥ Lord, ānanam face, dadṛśuḥ looked at.

Those who assembled at the royal court neither made a little noise, nor uttered untruth, nor spoke. All of them were fully accomplished, very heroic and looked at their Lord's face.
sarāvaṇaśśastrabhṛtāṅmanasvināṅmahābalānāṅsamitaumanasvī .

tasyāṅsabhāyāṅprabhayācakāśēmadhyēvasūnāmivavajrahastēḥ ।।6.11.32।।


tasyām in that sabhāyām: assembly, manasvī: heroic, sarāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, śastrabhṛtām those who held arms, manasvināṅ: heroes, mahābalānām of great prowess, samitau: in battle, vasūnām among Vasus (gods ), madhyē: in the midst, vajrahastaḥ Indra who holds a diamond bolt, iva: like, prabhayā: with glow, cakāśē: shone.

In that assembly, amid those heroes of great prowess, who held arms, Ravana glowed like Indra, who wields a diamond bolt in battle among the Vasus.
।।ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēēkādaśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the eleventh sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
