[Vibheeshana laments and Sri Rama consoles him and asks him to conduct the obsequies of Ravana.]

bharātaraṅnihataṅdṛṣaṭavāśayānaṅnirajitaṅraṇē .

śōkavēgaparītātamāvilalāpavibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.112.1।।


raṇē battlefield, nirajitama without life, nihatama killed, śayānama lying, bharātarama brother, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, śōkavēgaparītātamā immersed in sorrow, vilalāpa lamented

Vibheeshana, seeing his brother killed and lying in the battlefield, lamented immersed in sorrow.
vīra vikarānata vikhayāta paravīṇa nayakōvida .

mahārahāśayanōpētakiṅśēṣēnihatōbhuvi ।।6.112.2।।


vīra valiant, vikarānata powerful, vikhayāta renowned, paravīṇa skilled in all fields, nayakōvida in polity, mahārahaśayanōpēta accustomed to sumptuous bed, nihataḥ killed, bhuvi on ground, kima why, śēṣē lying

"O valiant, powerful and renowned king! You who were skilled in all fields and in polity, accustomed to a sumptuous bed, why are you lying on ground?"
vikaṣipayadīraghauniśacēṣaṭaubhujāvaṅagabhūṣitau .

mukuṭēnāpavṛtatēnabhāsakarākāravaracasā ।।6.112.3।।


aṅagadabhūṣitau decked with armlets, niśacēṣaṭau motionless, bhujau arms, vikaṣipaya broken, apavṛtanē knocked down, bhāsakarā Sun, kāravaracasā charming armlets, mukuṭēna with the crown

"Decked with armlets, motionless are your arms, broken, knocked down with the crown, radiant like the Sun."
daṅvīrasamaparāpataṅyanamayāpūravamīritama .

kāmamōhaparītasayayatatananarucitaṅtava ।।6.112.4।।


vīra hero, mayā by me, yata this, pūravama earlier, īritama predicted, yata that which, kāmamōhaparītasaya overcome by infatuation, tava your, na rucitama not find favour, tata that, idama thus, parāpatama true

"Hero! That which was predicted by me earlier, which did not find your favour due to your infatuation, has come true."
yananadarapātaparahasatōvānēnadarajinanāparējanāḥ .

na kumabakaraṇō.tirathōnātikāyōnarānatakaḥ ।।6.112.5।।

na savayaṅtavamamanayēthāsatasayōdarakō.yamāgataḥ .


yata that which, darapāta out of pride, parahasatōvā either Prahastha, inadarajita Indrajith, aparējanāḥ other Rakshasas, na nor, kumabhakaraṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, na nor, atirathaḥ exceeding car warrior, atikāyaḥ Athikaya, narānatakaḥ Naranthaka, na nor, savayama you also, tavama your, na amanayēthāḥ not cared for, tasaya its, ayama this, udarakaḥ consequence, āgataḥ has come

"Either Prahastha or Indrajith or other Rakshasas, or even Kumbhakarna, an exceeding car warrior, nor Atikaya or Naranthaka or you also did not care for my counsel. Its consequence has come now."
gatasasētusasunītīnāṅgatōdharamasayavigarahaḥ ।।6.112.6।।

gatasasatatavasayasaṅakaṣēpaḥparasatāvānāṅgatiragatā .

āditayaḥpatitōbhūmaumaganasatamasicanadaramāḥ ।।6.112.7।।

citarabhānuḥparaśānatāraciravayavasāyōnirudayamaḥ .

asaminanipatitēvīrē bhūmauśasatarabhṛtāṅvarē ।।6.112.8।।


śasatarabhṛtāma wielders of weapons, varē choicest, asamina vīrē this hero, bhūmau on ground, nipatitē fallen down, sunītīnāma prudent, sētuḥ boundary, gataḥ disappeared, dharamasaya righteousness, vigarahaḥ form, gataḥ departed, satatavasaya repository of might, saṅakaṣēpaḥ thrown down, gataḥ out of sight, parasatāvānāma praise worthy for all, gatiḥ position, gatā lost, āditayaḥ Sun, bhūmau on ground, patitaḥ fallen, canadaramāḥ moon, tamasi darkness, maganaḥ plunged, citarabhānuḥ fire, paraśānatāraciḥ extinct, vayavasāyaḥ enthusiasm, nirudayamaḥ wasted

" As this hero, the wielder of weapons has fallen down on ground, the prudent one who was at boundary, disappeared; he who was the form of righteousness, departed; he who was a repository of might, thrown down and out of sight; he, who was praiseworthy for all, lost position. With the hero falling down, it seems the Sun has fallen down, the moon plunged into darkness, fire became extinct, and the enthusiasm of people wasted."
kiṅśēṣamihalōkasayagatasatatavasayasamaparati .

raṇērākaṣasaśāradūlēparasupataivapāṅsuṣu ।।6.112.9।।


rākaṣasaśāradūlē tiger among Rakshasas, raṇē in the battlefield, pāṅsuṣu dust, parasupatēiva fallen like this asleep, samaparati everything, gatasatatavasaya strength departed, lōkasaya in the world, iha now, kima what, śēṣama is left

"With the tiger among the Rakshasas fallen asleep like this in the dust in the battlefield, strength of the people departed. What is left in this world?"
dhṛtiparavālaḥparasahayāgayarapuṣapasatapōbalaśaśaurayanibadadhamūlaḥ .

raṇēmahānarākaṣasarājavṛkaṣaḥsamamaraditōrāghavamārutēna ।।6.112.10।।


dhṛtiparavālaḥ firmness as leaves, parasahayāgayarapuṣapa stubbornness as blossom, tapōbalaḥ austerity, śaurayanibadadhamālaḥ valour as strong roots, mahāna great, rākaṣasarājavṛkaṣaḥ tree of Rakshasa king, rāghavamārutēna by the tempest of Raghava, raṇē in the battlefield, saṅmaradhitaḥ crushed

"The great tree in the form of Rakshasa king, with its firmness as leaves, stubbornness as its blossom, austerity as strength, valour as strong roots, was crushed by the tempest of Raghava in the battlefield."
tējōviṣāṇaḥkulavaṅśavaṅśaḥkōpaparasādāparagātarahasataḥ .

ikaṣavākusiṅhāvagṛhītadēhaḥsupataḥkaṣitaurāvaṇaganadhahasatī ।।6.112.11।।


tējōviṣāṇaḥ prowess as tusks, kulavaṅśavaṅśaḥ the father and grandfather as back of the body, kōpaparasādaparagātarahasataḥ wrath as lower body and graciousness as proboscis, rāvaṇaganadhahasatī, Ravana as the elephant in rut, ikaṣavākusiṅsāvagṛhītadēhaḥ lion in the shape of king of Ikshvaku race, kaṣitau overthrown on the ground, supataḥ lying asleep

"Ravana's prowess as tusks, father and grand fathers' race as back of the body, wrath as lower body and graciousness as proboscis, overthrown by a lion in the shape of Ikshvaku race having killed him he is lying asleep thrown down."
parākaramōtasāhavijṛmabhitāraciraniḥśavāsadhūmasasavabalaparatāpaḥ .

paratāpavānasamayatirākaṣasāganiraviravāpitōrāmapayōdharēṇa ।।6.112.12।।


parākaramōtasāhavijṛmabhitāraciḥ prowess and exceeding energy as flames, niḥśavāsadhūmaḥ sighs as smoke, savabalaparatāpaḥ own strength as heat, samayati in the battlefield, paratāpavāna endowed with prowess, rākaṣasāgani: fire of Rakshasa, rāmapayōdharēṇa by the rainy cloud in the shape of Rama, niravāpitaḥ extinguished

"The prowess and exceeding energy of Ravana as flames, his sighs as smoke, his own strength as heat, endowed with might, that fire of Rakshasa has been extinguished by the rainy cloud in the shape of Rama in the battlefield."
siṅharakaṣalāṅagūlakakudaviṣāṇaḥparābhijidaganadhanaganadhahasatī .

rakaṣōvṛṣaśacāpalakaraṇacakaṣuḥkaṣitīśavaravayāgharahatō.vasananaḥ ।।6.112.13।।


siṅharakaṣalāṅagūlakakudaviṣāṇaḥ Rakshasas as tails, humps, and horns, parābhijita the conqueror of its enemies, ganadhanaganadhahasatī in pride like elephant in rut, cāpakaraṇacakaṣuḥ animality as ears and eyes, rakaṣōvṛṣaḥ the bull in the form of Rakshasa, kaṣitīśavaravayāgharahataḥ tiger in the form of Rama master of the earth, avasananaḥ gone off

"Rakshasas who followed as tails, humps and horns, Ravana the conquerors of enemies, like elephants in pride, animality as ears and eyes, the bull in the form of Rakshasa Ravana was killed by Rama, the master of earth in the form of tiger."
vadanataṅhētumadavākayaṅparidṛṣaṭārathaniśacayama .

rāmaḥśōkasamāviṣaṭamitayuvācavibhīṣaṇama ।।6.112.14।।


rāmaḥ Rama, vadanatama countenance, śōkasamāviṣaṭama overcome by sorrow, vibhīṣaṇama Vibheeshana, hētumata with reason, paridṛṣaṭārathaniśacayama determined opinion, vākayama words, iti thus, uvāca spoke

Thus spoke Rama to Vibheeshana, who was overcome with sorrow and speaking with reason, his determined opinion.
nāyaṅvinaṣaṭōniśacēṣaṭasasamarēcaṇaḍavikaramaḥ .

atayunanatamahōtasāhaḥpatitō.yamaśaṅakitaḥ ।।6.112.15।।


ayama this, niśacēṣaṭaḥ without power, na vinaṣaṭaḥ not destroyed, samarē in war, caṇaḍavikaramaḥ of terrible prowess, ayama this, atayunanatamahōtasāhaḥ extraordinary enthusiasm, aśaṅakitaḥ without any fear, patitaḥ fallen

"This Ravana is not destroyed without power in war. He is of terrible prowess, of extraordinary enthusiasm and fought without any fear and fallen."
naivaṅvinaṣaṭāḥśōcayanatēkaṣataradharamavayavasathitāḥ .

vṛdhadimāśaṅsamānāyēnipatanatiraṇājirē ।।6.112.16।।


yē those who, kaṣataradharamavayavasathitāḥ kings who follow duty steadfast, vṛdhadima desiring advancement, aśaṅsamānāḥ fearless, raṇājirē in the battlefield, nipatanati fallen, vinaṣaṭāḥ lost, ēvama in that way, na śōcayanatē not to be mourned

"Those kings who follow duty steadfast, desiring advancement, fearless in the battlefield, who die in that way should not be mourned."
yēnasēnadarāsatarayōlōkāsatarāsitāyudhidhīmatā .

tasaminakālasamāyukatē na kālaḥpariśōcituma ।।6.112.17।।


dhīmatā wise, yēna being, yudhi war, sēnadarāḥ Indra, tarayaḥ three, lōkāḥ worlds, tarāsitāḥ fear, tasamina his, kālasamāyukatē brought under the sway of time, pariśōcituma to grieve, kālaḥ time, na not

"He who is wise, and the three worlds fear him, including Indra, the Lord of gods, when brought under the sway of death according to time-spirit, should not be mourned."
naikānatavijayōyudadhēbhūtapūravaḥkadācana .

parairāhanayatēvīraḥparānavāhanatisaṅyugē ।।6.112.18।।


kadācana not only that, yudadhē in war, ēkānatavijayaḥ victorious alone, na bhūtapūravaḥ now or before, vīraḥ heroic, saṅyugē in war, paraiḥ enemy, hanayatēvā will kill, parāna by enemy, hanativā be killed

"Not only that, in war, he will only will be victorious is not true now or before. Hero may kill the enemy or will be killed by the enemy."
iyaṅhipūravaisasanadiṣaṭāgatiḥkaṣatariyasamamatā .

kaṣatariyōnihataṅsaṅakhayē na śōcayaitiniśacayaḥ ।।6.112.19।।


iyama this, pūravaiḥ in the past, sanadiṣaṭā in battle, kaṣatariyasamamatā acceptable for ancient kings, gatiḥ course, saṅakhayē action, nihataḥ killed, kaṣatariyaḥ king, na śōcayaḥ not mourned, iti this, niśacayaḥ is true

"This course has been practised in the past by ancient kings for those killed in war. Warrior killed in war is not to be mourned', is true."
tadēvaṅniśacayaṅdṛṣaṭavātatatavamāsathāyavijavaraḥ .

yadihānanataraṅkārayaṅkalapayaṅtadanucinataya ।।6.112.20।।


tata that, ēvama in that way, niśacayama determined, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, tatatavama in principle, āsathāya considering, vijavaraḥ freed from grief, iha here, ananatarama later, yata that which, kārayama action, kalapayama to be done, tata that, anucinataya is required

In principle, in that way, decide the action, freed from grief, considering what action is required."
mukatavākayaṅvikarānataṅrājaputaraṅvibhīṣaṇaḥ .

uvācaśōkasanatapatōbharāturahitamananatarama ।।6.112.21।।


ukatavākayama having spoken like that, vikarānatama valiant, taṅrājaputarama prince, śōkasanatapataḥ immersed in grief, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, ananatarama after that, bharātuḥ brother, hitama good, uvāca spoke

Having spoken that way by the valiant prince to Vibheeshana, who was immersed in grief, spoke to Rama for the good of his brother.
yō.yaṅvimaradēṣavavibhaganapūravaḥsuraisasamasathērapivāsavēna .

bhavanatamāsādayaraṇēvibhaganōvēlāmivāsādayayathāsamudaraḥ ।।6.112.22।।


yaḥ he who, ayama this, vimaradēṣu in battle, sasamasathērapi combined together in trial of strength, surairapi even gods, vāsavēna by Indra, bhaganapūravaḥ not defeated, bhavanatama by you, āsādaya routed, vēlāma flow, āsādaya routed, samudaraḥyathā like the ocean, raṇē in war, vibhaganaḥ divides

"He who has not been defeated in battle by even gods or Indra combined together in a trial of strength has been routed by you like the flow of the ocean divides on reaching the shore."
anēnadatatānivanīpakēṣubhukatāśacabhōgānibhṛtāśacabhṛtayāḥ .

dhanānimitarēṣusamarapitānivairāṇayamitarēṣunipātitāni ।।6.112.23।।


anēna many, vanīpakēṣu mendicants, datatāni bestowed, bhōgāśaca gifts, bhukatāḥ nurtured, bhṛtayāḥ dependants nibhṛtāḥ filled with, dhanāni wealth, mitarēṣu to friends, samarapitāni given, vairāṇi grudges, amitarēṣu to enemies, nipātitāni destroyed

"He bestowed gifts to mendicants, nurtured dependents, filled his friends with wealth, and held grudges against enemies and destroyed them."
ēṣōhitāganiśaca:mahātapāśacavēdānatagaḥkaramasucāgayaraśūraḥ .

ētasayayataparētagatasayakṛtayaṅtatakaratumicachāmitavaparasādāta ।।6.112.24।।


ēṣaḥ he, hitāgani: maintained sacred fire, mahātapāśaca practised austerities, vēdānatagaḥ mastered vedas, karamasu ca even in doing rituals, agaraśūraḥ foremost, parētagatasaya departed soul, ētasaya to him, kṛtayama to do the rituals, tava your, parasādāta permission, karatuma will do, icachāmi I desire

"He maintained sacrificial fire and practised austerities. He mastered vedas and was even doing rituals. To the foremost brother's departed soul, I desire your permission to do the rituals."
maraṇānatānivairāṇiniravṛtataṅvaḥparayōjanama .

kariyatāmasayasaṅsakārōmamāpayēṣayathātava ।।6.112.25।।


vairāṇi enmity, maraṇānatāni after death, naḥ no, parayōjanama use, niravṛtatama with death, asaya his, saṅsakāraḥ last rites, kariyatāma may be carried out, ēṣaḥ that way, mamāpi me also, tava your, yathā like that

"There is no use of enmity after death. You may carry out his last rites. That way I am also your relation."
।। itayāraṣēvālamīkīyēśarīmadarāmāyaṇēādikāvayēyudadhakāṇaḍēdavādaśōtataraśatatamasasaragaḥ।।
